10 IDEAL FOODS THAT ARE GOOD FOR YOUR SKIN

We all want to treat our skin with care and attention, but did you know your diet can have a big effect on your skin?  Don’t worry, here are 10 foods that will set you on your way to a glowing complexion.

Brazil nuts

This might come as a surprise, but Brazil nuts are high in selenium.  A selenium-rich diet helps to prevent skin cancer, sun damage and age spots and eating just four of these nuts will help you reach the recommended daily amount.

Berries

Blackcurrants, blueberries and strawberries are all high in Vitamin C. Vitamin C is essential for a strong immune system and helps keep your skin looking radiant, while also speeding up the healing process of blemishes.

Avocados

Everyone’s new favourite food is about to get even better when you find out it is also good for your skin. Avocados, almonds and hazelnuts are all high in Vitamin E that protects the skin from oxidative (cell) damage, and promotes the healthy growth of skin.  Avocados also contain polyunsaturated fats that provide fatty acids, and acts as a natural moisturiser for your skin.

Oily fish

It’s no secret that oily fish is high in omega-3, but did you know it is good for your skin?  Omega-3 is particularly helpful for inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis as it encourages the body to produce anti-inflammatory compounds.  It is also good for preventing acne for this reason, as inflammatory is a known root cause of acne.

Red meat

Red meat contains zinc which is known to repair skin damage and helps to keep skin soft and subtle.  Zinc can also be found in poultry, whole grains, fish and shellfish.

Olive oil

This might be another surprise, but olive oil actually keeps your skin looking younger as it reduces the signs of ageing.  This is because it contains monounsaturated fatty acids, which work to keep you looking youthful.

Tomatoes

Did you know that tomatoes could help protect your skin from sunburn?  This is because they contain antioxidant lycopene, which improves the skin’s natural SPF.  This works best when tomatoes are cooked or pressed but bear in mind that eating lots of tomatoes does not mean you shouldn’t be wearing sun cream.  Make sure always to stay protected in the sun and choose the right sun cream for your skin.

Green tea

Similarly, green tea is also known to protect your skin from sun damage when you are exposed to UV light.  It also works to boost blood flow and therefore oxygen to the skin, keeping your complexion looking bright and healthy.

Almond milk

Switching from cow’s milk can really benefit your skin as it is highly inflammatory, so can cause acne to worsen.  It also promotes wrinkles and rashes, so switching to non-dairy milk like almond milk is a good option.

Eggs

Finally, and perhaps most strangely, eggs can also benefit your complexion.  This is because eggs are high in protein but not in fat.  A recent study revealed that even by increasing your fat intake, you also increase the chance of developing wrinkles.

So there you have it, our top tips for eating your way to a better complexion.  Adapting your diet is a good start, but you should also consider using natural skincare and makeup products, free from harmful toxic chemicals, such as those offered by Tropic Skincare, to keep your skin happy every day.
