A dream of so many, realised by so few. To be out on the open road, with the wind in your hair and sails, and freedom in your heart. *sigh*. Then we remember – how could we forget? – work in the morning, the alarm clock that waits for no woman, the twice-a-day commute disaster, and the likelihood of spending all free time on being hungover at home. How we wish things could be different. But wait – and whisper it – what if we told you they can? Life on the open road is possible – completely conceivable even – after all. All it takes is a little courage, an open mind and the following of a few simple steps. So, here are 5 IDEAL tips for life on the open road.
INVEST IN A BUILT IN KITCHEN
A fully functional kitchen in a car? Yes it is possible. Jaguar Land Rover have partnered up with chef Jamie Oliver to design and create a fully integrated kitchen inside an SUV especially for him, utilising every bit of space and technology available. The Land Rover Discovery kitchen features some of the best culinary gadgets around including a two slice toaster, a 4.7 litre slow cooker and the boot stores a fully equipped fold and slide out kitchen worktop with two gas hobs, a sink and a veneered finished surface. Even more impressive, both rear windows have been custom built with external access to the model’s very own herb garden on the right and 11-piece spice rack on the left. And, of course, it wouldn’t truly be a fully functioning kitchen on wheels without a dual folding BBQ and a rotisserie that is powered by the Land Rover engine.
GET POWERED UP
Wherever you go, you’re going to need electricity. Get an A DC-to-AC inverter – this will provide power for your laptop, small refrigerators and other devices. Also, get your hands on a solar powered generator for a more environmentally friendly travel. Portable battery packs are a must and take advantage of power outlets at any cafes and restaurants you stop off at along the way.
DON’T SKIMP ON YOUR SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS
Whether your simply folding down or removing seats and inflating a mattress, or camping out every night, don’t skimp on your sleeping arrangements. Get the best inflatable mattress possible and pair it with a luxury sleeping bag or a down duvet and the sofest pillows that money can buy. You can even buy a memory foam mattress topper for extra comfort. Being on the open road and enjoying the pleasure of freedom is somewhat temepered if you’re waking up feeling groggy and grumpy every morning.
TAKE CARE OF YOUR VEHEICLE
This sounds like an obvious one, and it is. Think of your vehicle as your new best friend, and as such you need to pay close attention to it, listen to it and take care of it. Give it a drink every so often – routine oil changes are a must. Rotate your tires and get it serviced once in a while (the vehicle as friend metaphor has ended by now, we hope).
MEET PEOPLE ALONG THE WAY
Human beings are social creatures. Sometimes when you’re travelling full time, it can get lonely. Part of the whole ‘travelling experience’ is to meet new people, learn about other cultures and get to know new worlds. So get out there, be confident and welcoming. Consider staying at hotel or hostel every now and again where you can meet like minded individuals and share tips. We’re sure sleeping on an actual bed with easy access to a bathroom will also make a welcome change.
