Although, buying a used car is a smart move in terms that it saves you from spending a fortune on a new car. Still, you have to be cautious when you begin your hunt for the one.

Here a checklist is made to give you a clear idea of what you need to look for when buying a used car through a dealer or a private seller.

VEHICLE HISTORY REPORT

Get checked the vehicle history report, run the VIN (vehicle identification number) through a vehicle checker that offers their services to give you information about the history of the vehicle, to check for previous accidents, problems with the vehicle, ownership history.

It is the most important and the earliest step to be taken before you finalize your decision especially if you are buying it from a private dealer.

GO FOR A TEST DRIVE

The best way to assess the condition of a car is to go for a test drive, you will come to know if it is the right car for you. You need to check out few things here:

  • Are you comfortable getting in and out of the car without bending and stooping?
  • Do you feel spaciousness when you are seated at the driving seat and also check the back seat space as well?
  • Are the seats adjustable and comfortable?
  • Check the engine light, if it is on it indicates a problem then get it checked before you buy the car.
  • Check the side view mirrors and rear-view mirror for visibility and look for the blind spots too.
  • Check if you smell gas or burning fuel or anything amiss.
  • Check out the tires if they are worn out.
  • Check the breaks to see if they are performing smoothly or if they squeak.
  • Visually inspect the engine to see if there is any leakage of oil, steaming, cracked hoses, or belts. 
  • Check out the mileage of the car, a car with high mileage has a greater risk that its mechanical components are worn out.
  • Check the air condition, headlights, brake lights, and indicators if they are working properly.

After having a test drive, check the service records to make sure the car has been well-maintained.

CAR INSPECTION

Get the car checked by a trustworthy and experienced mechanic, this is the most essential part of the whole buying process that you should not avoid. 

You need a mechanic to look for the underlying issues or problems and run some basic tests. This will ensure that the car is in a good shape and could save you from spending money in the long run.

NEGOTIATE TO GET A GOOD DEAL

Make initial negotiations in person. To encounter, make sure you have a plan and have done your research at home.

Start with an offer that is lower than the price you are willing to spend for the car.

Finally, when your negotiation is settled and once you are done with the paperwork, it is time to celebrate- go on a long drive with your new companion
