Entertaining the kids can be tough if you’re strapped for cash. But have no fear, there are plenty of things you can do that are free or relatively cheap to set up. Here are 10 IDEAL child friendly activities that are fun and free.
MUSEUM TRIP
There are plenty of free museums around the UK, showcasing everything from natural history to science and media. You’ll be able to find loads of interactive things to do that the whole family can enjoy.
WOODLAND WALK
Great if the weather is warm, but even better when there are muddy puddles to jump in and trees to climb. Make sure your kids are wrapped up warm in comfy clothing and head out to explore the wilderness. Become a nature detective, looking for bugs and birds. It’s an activity that’s fun for all ages, in any weather.
GEOCACHING
If you’ve not heard of Geocaching, you’ll be hooked soon enough. It’s a great way to get the whole family out and about, and best of all, the equipment is something you’ll already have to hand; as all you need is a smartphone. Follow your GPS system to find hidden goodies in this real world outdoor treasure hunt.
BUILD A FORT
Great for rainy days, this one; get creative and build a fort in your living room. Grab your bed sheets, cushions and chairs and create a den, perfect for watching films with an indoor picnic. Sounds simple, but it’s every kid’s favourite indoor activity.
CREATE A MOVIE
If you’ve got a whole day to fill, why not script, film and edit your own movie? Get the kids to write the script, use your smartphone to film it and sit down at the end of the day for the premiere. Popcorn, of course, is mandatory.
CAMP IN THE GARDEN
On warm nights, you can feel a million miles from home, even though you’re just a few feet away from the back door! Pitch up your tent, roast marshmallows over a campfire and read ghost stories. When you’re done, study the stars to give the little ones a little perspective on the bigger picture of life.
HOST A SPORTS DAY AT HOME
Get moving with a makeshift sports day at home. Grab your eggs and spoons, use pillow cases for the sack race and create your own obstacle course. A great, fun day in the sun at a low cost. What’s more, it’s active, so great for stretching those legs and getting a spot of exercise.
HAVE A PICNIC
Travel to a local park and play frisbee or football. Enjoy playing team games and treat yourself to a homemade picnic once you’re worn out. Pack healthy treats, sandwiches, fruit and cakes for the perfect picnic in the park. Just remember a rug or you’re going to be hearing a whole lot of moaning about ant bites.
CREATE A SCRAPBOOK
Another great activity for rainy days. Compile all your old photos, get out the glitter pens and make a scrapbook. This can be a great activity for your kids to do supervised or on their own – minus the scissors of course.
FREE AUDIENCE TICKETS
If your kids love watching the X Factor, or if they have another favourite television show, why not apply to sit in the audience. Register for the chance to watch your favourite shows be filmed live – all you’ll need to worry about is the cost of getting there; most are in London and booking in advance means you can choose cheaper seats and make a day of it.
