6 IDEAL WAYS TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF YOUR SUMMER SCENT

It might not come as a surprise that the aroma of our fragrances changes with the different seasons. And during the summer you will probably find that your scent fades faster than it would in the colder months. Yep, our perfumes work the worst in the height of summer when we’re probably at our sweaty and smelliest. So to help you smell terrific all summer long, with the help of Leighton Denny MBE, here are 6 IDEAL ways to make the most out of your summer scent.

MAKE SURE YOU’RE HYDRATED

As we all know, drinking plenty of water is important in the summer months. However, did you know that staying hydrated is also helpful when it comes to keeping your skin scented? The oils in our skin help to retain scent molecules, so the more hydrated and oiler the skin, the more intense your fragrance will be and the longer it will last. As such, drinking plenty of water will maintain the production of oil and keep your skin hydrated.

USE AN EMOLLIENT LAYER

All fragrances smell differently on different people, this is because each of us has our own ‘scent print’ that will influence the development of a scent.  Loads of things affect our odour-identity including our diet, medication intake, stress levels and, probably the most important factor of all, the temperature of our skin.

Indeed when it comes to how scents smell, the warmth of our skin is critical. Why? Well some people have more pores per centimetre than others, or more layers of fat in their skin. These and other factors affect the warmth of skin, which in turn influences the scent of a fragrance. The solution? Put an emollient layer between your skin and your perfume – a body oil, cream or moisturiser should increase the staying power of your scent as it will slow down the rate of the fragrance evaporation.

LESS AND OFTEN

Summer heat increases the impact of odour. The hotter the weather, the more rapidly the ‘notes’ of a fragrance will leave the skin. The best way to combat this in hot weather is to apply less fragrance but more frequently.

SPRAY IT RIGHT

Applying scent correctly is the simplest of matters, however many of us do it wrong. Simply spray about 20cm away from your skin. Also, an even spray over a wider area will help your fragrance last longer than a generous amount in a small area. Moreover, avoid rubbing the area after application to prevent ‘crushing’ the scent. Good places to apply include on pulse points (below earlobes and inside elbows) and on shoulders, and back of the neck at the hairline…or anywhere you’d want to be kissed. Oh and a maximum of 4 sprays is the optimum amount.

SPRITZ ON CLOTHES

In the warm weather, perspiration can cause your scent to disappear faster as it will mix and evaporate along with it. As such, spritzing on clothes is one way of keeping your scent around a little longer. Once dressed spray fragrance into the air and walk into it – this will create an even dusting of fragrance, which is better than spraying directly on clothes.

NEVER KEEP FRAGRANCES IN THE SUN

And lastly – heat, light and humidity all play a part in breaking down your perfume’s powers over time. Any fragrance that is kept out of its box and sat in direct sunlight isn’t going to last more than a few months at most. If it gets hot then cold frequently it will sweat, and condensation can get into the juice, the scent will go cloudy, and you can say RIP to your EDP.
