Dubai, the city of superlatives, is renowned for its towering skyscrapers, opulent shopping malls, and luxurious lifestyle. While the iconic Burj Khalifa and the sprawling Palm Jumeirah are on every tourist’s checklist, there’s a different side to this bustling metropolis that remains uncharted by the typical visitor.

If you’re looking to escape the throngs and discover a more authentic Dubai, then you’re in for a treat. Here’s how to spend an alternative weekend in Dubai, immersing yourself in the city’s lesser-known cultural gems.

Friday: Unveiling Artistic Dubai

Embark on a cultural odyssey in a side of Dubai that shuns the limelight yet dazzles with its artistic splendour. Friday is dedicated to uncovering the city’s vibrant art scene, from the contemporary galleries of Alserkal Avenue to the historic charm of the Al Fahidi Neighbourhood. It’s a day to engage with the city’s creative pulse and end your evening in a courtyard oasis that’s a well-kept secret among locals.

Morning: Alserkal Avenue – The Artistic Heartbeat

Begin your weekend with a visit to Alserkal Avenue in the industrial area of Al Quoz. This contemporary art hub is a stark contrast to the glitzy parts of Dubai. Wander through the labyrinth of galleries housed in converted warehouses, where you can admire avant-garde art, participate in workshops, and even chat with local artists. The avenue is also home to artisanal cafes where you can enjoy a leisurely breakfast.

Afternoon: Dubai Creek & Al Fahidi Neighbourhood

Post-lunch, head to the Dubai Creek. Though the flash and the brash might choose to rent a Ferrari in Dubai and tear up the roads with abandon, those looking for a more laid back time might instead want to hire an ‘abra’ (traditional boat) for a tranquil ride away from the city’s bustle.

Disembark at the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, where the narrow lanes and wind-towered buildings offer a glimpse into Dubai’s past. Visit the Dubai Museum, housed in the Al Fahidi Fort, to learn about the emirate’s history and culture.

Evening: The Courtyard – A Serene Escape

As the sun sets, find your way to The Courtyard in Al Quoz. This tranquil space is a cultural enclave where you can unwind in the midst of art studios, boutique shops, and cosy cafes. Enjoy a quiet dinner at one of the alfresco eateries, surrounded by the soft strumming of a guitar or a spontaneous performance by local musicians.

If you don’t make it to Al Quoz in the evening, consider heading to the area for breakfast. Here the day begins with plenty of freshly made parathas – a morning must. We’re fans of Raju Omlet on Sheikh Zayed Road which is perhaps the most popular egg-centristic casual dining spots in Dubai – it will meet all your breakfast eggspectations (sorry we had to).

Saturday: Embracing Nature’s Unique Palette

Saturday beckons nature lovers to step away from the steel and into the green. Begin with a sunrise amidst the flamingos at Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, then wander through the floral fantasy of the Dubai Miracle Garden. As the day wanes, find solace in the traditional Arabian Tea House, a perfect blend of heritage and tranquillity to reflect on the natural beauty that Dubai has to offer.

Morning: Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary

Start your day early at the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, located at the mouth of Dubai Creek. This wetland reserve is a haven for birdwatchers, home to a large number of flamingos that paint the area pink during the winter months. The sanctuary’s three bird hides are free to enter and provide a peaceful retreat to observe the wildlife.

Afternoon: Dubai Miracle Garden

After a morning of tranquillity, venture to the Dubai Miracle Garden, the world’s largest natural flower garden. This floral wonderland is a world away from the city’s concrete jungle. Stroll through heart-shaped archways, houses adorned with flowers, and even a full-sized floral aeroplane. It’s a surreal experience that offers a burst of colour and a breath of fresh air.

Evening: Arabian Tea House

Conclude your day with a visit to the Arabian Tea House. Nestled in the Al Fahidi Neighbourhood, this traditional café offers a vast selection of teas, Middle Eastern cuisine, and a charming ambience. Relax in the garden courtyard under the fairy lights and enjoy the aromatic shisha for a truly local experience.

Sunday: A Culinary Journey Through Time

Conclude your weekend with a sensory journey through Dubai’s aromatic and flavourful side. Sunday is all about the city’s rich culinary heritage, starting with the bustling Spice Souk and the historic Heritage House. As the day unfolds, explore the hidden gastronomic treasures of Jumeirah before capping off your weekend with a serene sunset at Kite Beach, where the city’s vibrant food scene meets the peaceful Gulf shores.

Morning: Spice Souk & Heritage House

On your final day, delve into the aromatic world of the Spice Souk in Deira. Engage your senses as you navigate through the narrow alleys lined with sacks of spices, herbs, and incense. Afterward, visit the nearby Heritage House, once the home of a wealthy pearl merchant, to see a beautifully restored example of domestic architecture from the past.

Afternoon: Jumeirah’s Hidden Gems

For lunch, avoid the typical beachfront eateries and seek out the hidden culinary delights in the residential streets of Jumeirah. Here, you’ll find a plethora of independent cafes and restaurants serving everything from organic health foods to authentic Emirati dishes.

After lunch, head to Souk Madinat next to the iconic Burj Al Arab for some afternoon shopping. This is contemporary interpretation of a traditional Arabian town. While it’s less traditional than the souks you’ll see in the old town, there’s still lots of traditional touches that give you a taste of the local culture.

Evening: Sunset At Kite Beach

As your alternative weekend in Dubai draws to a close, spend your final hours at Kite Beach. It’s a favourite spot among locals for its laid-back vibe and stunning sunset views. Grab a beanbag at one of the beachside cafes, order a refreshing smoothie, and watch as the kite surfers dance with the wind against the backdrop of an amber sky.

The Bottom Line

Dubai is a city of contrasts, and beyond the glitz and glamour lies a world rich with culture, nature, and culinary delights. An alternative weekend here, whatever the time of year you choose to visit, can offer a refreshing perspective on what it means to truly experience this vibrant city.
