We all want flawless skin, but most of us are not blessed with it. But, by following some skin care tips that don’t involve expensive products or treatments, you can improve your skin’s appearance.

The following are tips on how to improve your skin naturally.

Diet

Healthy skin begins with a balanced diet that includes eating the right foods, as well as avoiding those that aren’t so good for your skin. Refined carbs, processed meals and fried foods are bad for your skin, sure, and your health for that matter, but you don’t have to completely cut them out of your diet; we all deserve a treat, after all.

The best diet for skin health should be rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Here are some of the foods you should stock up on if you want to have a healthy skin:

  • Celery, cucumber, watermelon, watercress
  • Blueberries and raspberries
  • Sardines, herring, salmon
  • Green tea
  • Onions, garlic, leeks
  • Avocados
  • Cinnamon
  • Ginger
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts

Sunscreen

Applying sunscreen every day is crucial to skin health, as guarding your skin from the sun slows down the ageing process and helps keep skin cancer at bay. When looking for a sunscreen, look for one with a high SPF (at least 30), water resistance and broad-spectrum protection.

Sunscreen should always be used even if it is overcast or cloudy, as your skin is still exposed while driving or walking, and UV damage can still occur even in overcast conditions. To avoid forgetting to apply sunscreen, make it a habit to do so at all times.

Sleep

The more hours of rest you get each night, the more time your body has to repair damaged skin. The benefits are not just realised in the distant future. Quite frequently, the effects will become apparent the following day. If you get enough rest, you’ll need less makeup because your skin will look fresh and rejuvenated.

The recommended amount of sleep for a healthy adult is 7 to 8 hours. If you’re not getting that hallowed amount, subsequent sleeplessness could cause an increase in cortisol levels, which in turn accelerates the breakdown of collagen and results in under-eye bags. Yawning and squinting also cause the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the eye.

Water Intake

Many people fail to recognise the positive effects that water can have on their health and skin. Drinking water is the most natural way to maintain and improve the appearance of your skin, helping to flush out toxins from your body, maintain a healthy pH level, decrease the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin, prevent acne and pimples, boost skin elasticity, accelerate the recovery process after sunburn and generally just make your skin glow.

Less Stress

The skin is just one of the many physiological systems that might be negatively impacted by stress. The production of cortisol increases in response to stress, which causes the skin to become oilier and weakens its capacity to defend itself against bacteria that cause acne.

Stress management can be beneficial for your skin: you can try meditation, yoga, and even just taking deep breaths can help alleviate stress.

You can also have your skin looking amazing by applying a face mask at least once a week. The process of making a homemade face mask is simple. You can use the simple one of applying a ripe avocado on your face or go an extra step further and utilise one of the various recipes on the internet.
