6 AMAZING DECORATING IDEAS FOR YOUNG KIDS’ BEDROOMS

A child’s bedroom is their kingdom –  a place to play, sleep, study and even dream. Whilst, of course, their space needs to cater to the functional aspects of a bedroom, it also needs to look good. But even more than that, a kid’s room needs to encourage their growing personality and sense of individuality.

That can be a tricky balancing act; you want the room to reflect the child’s changing tastes but still have longevity. No one wants to repaint every other month, but those changing tastes do admittedly change awfully fast. To guarantee a room that both endures and pleases the eye, here are 6 amazing decorating ideas for young kids’ bedrooms.

STORYBOOK WALL

Does your kid have a favourite book? Then feed your child’s imagination by bringing their favourite story books to life. Rather than going all out and doing the whole room in ode to their favourite story, you could instead create a feature wall mural. If you have an artist’s hand, then paint it yourself. Alternatively, you could commission someone to do it for you.

A mural can add a childlike whimsy and personality to a room. However, instead of painting directly onto the walls, consider creating a gallery feature wall with framed pictures cut out from their  favourite book. Hung pictures on a neutral canvas can easily be updated as your child grows and their interests inevitably change.

In keeping with this theme, and now that we know that your child loves to read, why not devote one corner of the room for your children to read their favourite books? Think comfy bean bags  surrounded by bookshelves and a few toys of their favourite story characters thrown in for good measure!

TOY THEMED

Your child is going to remember the bedroom they grew up in, so it’s only natural to want to go all out. Why not pick a theme related to their favourite toy or type of toy and just run with it?

Is your kid into toy planes? Why not buy model plane kits to build and hang from the ceiling? Or maybe they are obsessed with Disney’s Mulan or Pixar’s Toy story? Well, Primark currently store both Mulan and Toy Story bedding…the possibilities are endless!

When it comes to creating a toy themed room, try to keep the decor simple and not over clutter the room – make sure there is plenty of space to play and relax, or they’ll never keep their room even remotely tidy!

NATURE THEMED

Kids just love nature, with the great outdoors offering endless fascination and intrigue. Unfortunately, here in the UK, the weather is a little inclement, to say the least. When you can’t be outside, why not bring nature in, instead?

A British woodland themed room could be an immersive, informative experience, or perhaps your child loves a tropical vibe? Or maybe they are animal obsessed and want to proudly display snake anatomy diagrams on their bedroom wall or panda posters for all to see? Encourage it!

Nature is one of the easiest, most aesthetically pleasing themes to work with. You could even add plants for them to nurture and look after and create a space that’s educational, too. Either way, your kids will be kept super busy and entertained in a nature themed bedroom.

SPACE EXPLORATION

Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of your child’s bedroom – to boldly decorate like no parent has done before…

If your child is into space exploration, you might want to go with a space-themed bedroom; think posters of the planets and those glow-in-the-dark stickers stars for the ceiling to really bring their room to life at night.

Go further and consider a chalkboard wall so they can draw planets and stars themselves. Children just love to draw, doodle, and scribble on walls, and chalkboard walls have serious staying power. No doubt theirs will still be loved into their teenage years when they’ll probably scrawl a few swear words on there for good measure. Kids will be kids!

BOLD, BRIGHT COLOURS

If you’re a regular reader of IDEAL, you’ll know that we tend to discourage energetic colours like the vivacity of neon yellow or the boldness of electric blue when it comes to kids’ bedrooms.

But today, we say throw that rulebook out of the window. Partly.

Instead of committing to a striking shade for all the walls, why not just paint one feature wall in a vibrant hue, meaning you won’t have to do the whole room again when tastes change.

Alternatively, keep the walls a neutral colour and add colourful rugs, lampshades and soft furnishings to bring that vibrancy. They don’t even have to be childish accessories – colourful inspired Moroccan rugs can look playful yet will remain stylish for years to come and will satisfy your little one’s desire for colour in their bedroom.

THE BOTTOM LINE

When creating a space for your child, remember that kids see the world very differently to us grownups. As such, creating a space that encourages play, learning and fun is, and always will be, the ideal way to go.
