As the days get hotter, all we want to do is get outside and enjoy the sunshine. But we all know what this means for our hair; the dreaded frizz.
Managing unruly, frizz-prone hair in the summer can be a bore. There’s nothing worse that spending hours smoothing and straightening your locks, only to step outside and be hit with a mass of frizz and tangles within minutes.
So, to prevent this from happening and with the help of hair stylist to the stars Asgar Saboo, here’s 5 IDEAL tips to prevent frizz in the humidity this summer.
CONDITIONER IS KEY
Funnily enough, the best way to prevent frizz is with moisture (as if you didn’t know that). If your hair isn’t packed with moisture, the cuticles will open up, letting in the air’s moisture and causing frizz.
When you wash your hair, never skip conditioner. Twice a week, use only conditioner on your hair and no shampoo and once a week use a conditioning mask to ensure maximum moisture and gloss. Avoid shampoos and conditioners that contain sulphates (chemicals used as cleansing agents) as these can strip your hair of it’s natural oils needed to keep your locks healthy.
If you’re a DIY type of girl, homemade hair masks with coconut or banana are the best for controlling frizz.
WASH LESS OFTEN
Not your body, your hair! Don’t let the sweaty heat leave you reaching for the shampoo daily. Washing too often will strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving your locks unprotected, dry and susceptible to frizz. Try to wash your hair only two or three times a week, and only use shampoo on your roots to stop your locks from drying out. Use cold water when washing your hair; not only will this cool you down in the heat, it also helps to seal your pores and keep the moisture in your hair intact.
BEAT THE FRIZZ FROM WITHIN
Eating the right foods will help to strengthen your hair, giving moisture to your locks to prevent frizz. Upping your omega-3 intake in summer will really help your hair survive the humidity. Eat plenty of fish such as salmon and tuna and include superfoods such as flax seeds and acai in your diet.
CARRY A ‘MAGIC WAND’
A great way to tame frizz on the go is to carry a toothbrush in your handbag. Simply spritz the bristles with strong hairspray which you can easily whip out to tame the flyaways. This is the quickest and cheapest way to tame frizz on a hot day!
GENTLE DRY
One major way to prevent frizz is to never disrupt your hair’s cuticle, so you must be gentle! Avoid rough drying your hair all the time with a towel; instead, simply wrap a towel around your locks to gently soak up excess moisture. Frizz begins to form as soon as your locks begin to dry, so make sure to apply serum to the hair before you bow-dry. Only blow dry your hair once your hair has dried naturally to around 90% dry. This will reduce damage and frizz control.
PIN IT UP
One of the simplest ways to beat frizz is to pin your hair up. This means your hair won’t have a chance to frizz as it’ll be held down. hen it’s particularly hot and humid outside, simply take a hair-tie or an Alice band and a few bobby pins and clip your hair into a neat up-do. Give the front a quick spritz with anti-frizz spray and it’ll be perfect all day. For extra frizz protection, cover with a bandana or silk scarf.
OIL REGULARLY
Applying a few daily drops of hair oil will ensure your locks are left nourished and frizz free. Apply a few drops of hair oil to just-washed hair and rub it in to ensure it’s absorbed. Mix a few drops of oil with water in a small spray bottle and spritz into your hair on non-wash days to ensure it stays smooth. Argan oil will work perfectly, sealing your hairs cuticles to protect your locks from external factors such as humidity. Be sure to use a lightweight oil which won’t weigh down your hair’s natural movement
