THE IDEAL GUIDE TO HYPNOSIS: MYTHS VS FACTS

The popularity of complementary therapies to treat ailments such as addiction, phobias, weight problems and various health conditions has soared in recent years. However, a large number of people are still sceptical about hypnotherapy as an effective alternative form of therapy.

If you’re unfamiliar with the practice or curious about what hypnosis truly involves, learning more about its history and science can help clarify common misconceptions.

YOU CAN BE MADE TO DO ANYTHING WHILST UNDER HYPNOSIS: MYTH

Many people believe that hypnosis is all about learning how to control people, however they’re wrong. Unfortunately ‘stage hypnosis’, where a person is hypnotised in front of an audience, has encouraged people to have sceptical views on hypnotherapyas a valid form of treatment for people suffering with life-debilitating habits, phobias and anxieties. This type of hypnosis is very much about entertaining the audience and the person undergoing the hypnosis will be going along with it all to add to the entertainment factor.

THE HYPNOTHERAPIST WILL USE A PENDULUM: MYTH

One of the most common preconceptions about hypnotherapy is that the hypnotherapist will swing a pendulum in front of the patient to send them into a trance-like state, and then click their fingers when they want to wake them up. Hypnotherapy is more like guiding people through to a very relaxed state of mind, like a daydream, to access the altered state of consciousness. When with a patient, I talk to them and encourage them to enter a deep tranquil state, it is very gradual.

HYPNOTHERAPY IS SIMILAR TO MEDITATION : FACT

The deep state of relaxation you experience during hypnotherapy has often been compared to the state of being that is achieved from meditation. This is because you quieting the conscious part of your mind, allowing the subconscious to take over.

ONLY GULLIBLE PEOPLE CAN BE HYPNOTISED: MYTH

This definitely isn’t true. Anyone can be hypnotised, however treatment is usually more effective for patients who really desire a change and cure. For example, if a smoker really wants to quit the habit and is choosing to seek therapy for it, this will be more beneficial than if say, they still enjoy smoking but their partner wants to make them quit. On the whole hypnosis is very successful however it relies on the patient being open to change.

HYPNOTHERAPY IS SAFE: FACT

Much like meditation, hypnotherapy is 100% safe and patients can open their eyes and come out of their relaxed state at any point during the process. It’s a completely natural practice; therefore there are no health and safety risks for the patient.

A PERSON HAS TOTAL CONTROL WHEN THEY ARE HYPNOTISED: FACT

You will always be 100% in control throughout hypnotherapy. Unless you’re taking part in ‘stage hypnosis’, then you won’t be made to run around doing silly things and making a fool of yourself! Hypnosis is the process of re-wiring your subconscious mind in order to make you think differently, not act differently.

YOU WILL REVEAL YOUR DEEPEST DARKEST SECRETS UNDER HYPNOSIS: MYTH

By reaching an alternate state of consciousness during hypnosis, your unconscious is more receptive to the suggestions made by your hypnotherapist. This cannot make you say or do anything under hypnosis that you don’t want to do. You are completely in control and empowered throughout the process.

A PERSON IS HYPNOTIC STATE IS STILL AWARE OF THEIR SURROUNDINGS: FACT

Clients have reported different experiences following treatment, however during the process the patient will always be aware of their surroundings, and able to hear sounds. It’s also worth noting that the depth of your hypnotic ‘trance’ doesn’t always correspond to your results.

5 IDEAL WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY FROM FLOODS

If there is one thing that’s guaranteed in England, it’s rain. And if there’s another thing guaranteed, it’s that we’ll be woefully under-prepared for it. The merest smattering of snow brings the country grinding to a halt, a second of sunshine gets us running for cover, and a single gust of bluster has us battening down the hatches with abandon. Silly, we know, but nonetheless a source of national pride – somehow – at our ineptitude at predicting, and responding to, the ever changing weather.

Flood damage, though, is no laughing matter, affecting thousands of homes each year, destroying cherished property and disrupting daily life without discrimination. So with that in mind, we think it’s high time to get serious about this annual occurrence. Here are 5 IDEAL ways to protect your property from floods.

BE GREENER & RECYCLE

Global warming is increasing rainfall rates. Fact. Climate change means more frequent flooding. Fact. We all need to take responsibility to help prevent flooding. Fact. Scientists have warned us that there’s a direct correlation between climate change and flood risks, so it’s high time we did something about it. It’s basic physics – a warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture, thus there are going to be heavier downpours. From recycling to reducing your everyday carbon footprint, there are so many ways to live a greener life and in turn, mitigate the risk of flooding and help to protect your property.

PETITION THE GOVERNMENT

The government needs to get serious about climate change and factor it into all of it’s policies. As far as we’re concerned, it needs to quadruple (more, even) it’s efforts in tackling the causes of climate change. So petition the government to be greener. Ask them to stop burning fossil fuels and power up the country with clean energy. They also need to force devlopers to make new homes resilient to flooding.

FLOOD BARRIERS

Make your home a fortress against the rain. Ensure any gaps or holes in the sealant of your doors and windows are filled in. Cover airs vents with plastic sheeting. Sandbagging and using flood boards can also prevent water from entering your house so it’s a good idea to stock up on them. Plenty of retailers have empty sandbags for sale, use them to block doorways and help you fight the flood. On a wider scale, more natural measures need to be put into place to stop flooding . Think tree planting and placing logs in rivers to slow the flow of the water. Another petition to the government anyone?

FLOOD IMPACT REDUCTION

It’s important to know the flood level of your home which you can find out from your local government agency. Once the water reaches the level of your floor and goes an inch above, you’re going to have significant damage. Therefore  it’s important to think about the interior design of your house; raise switches, sockets, circuit breakers, wiring and anything else electrical at least a foot above the flood level in your area. Think about where your letterbox is and install water resistant doors and window frames  You can also raise the legs on tables, chairs and other furniture.

As Better Flood, who offer Delaware flood insurance, tell us, you should consider replacing wooden floorboards with concrete and tiles rather than having carpet on your bottom floor. Plaster internal walls with water resistant materials like lime plaster or cement render. Even consider a green roof (roofs that are covered in vegetation) which will absorb rainwater and help to mitigate flooding. Equally, think about building a rain garden, which uses plants that absorb rainwater.

During heavy rainfall and risk of possible floods, it’s a good idea to move anything in harm’s way from the deluge to upper floors – furniture, rugs, electronics and other personal belongings you don’t want to get ruined. Also, remember to shut off all your power supply – water and electricity is never a good combination.

To further protect your home from flood damage, it’s essential to have a plan in place for post-flood recovery. In the unfortunate event that flooding does occur, knowing who to call for emergency flood cleanup services can make a significant difference in minimising long-term damage. Such services can help you quickly remove water, dry out your property, and start the restoration process efficiently.

KEEP DRAINS AND PIPES MAINTAINED

To ensure your home is prepared to cope with heavy rainfall, get on top of your gutters. Literally. Clear them of any leaves, twigs and other debris that may have accumulated in your drains and pipes through the year. If you don’t, the water won’t be able to flow.  You could even install one-way valves into your drainage pipes – this will help to prevent water and sewage backing up into the house.

And remember; the key to protecting your property is a holistic approach. It’s as much about protecting the environment as it is protecting your home.

2018’S MOST STYLISH WOMEN & HOW TO GET THE IDEAL LOOK

Fashion is fluid and we all have our personal takes on what looks good and what doesn’t. Whilst individuality is to be applauded, many of us freely admit to taking sartorial inspiration from celebrity trailblazers — but who are they and how do you emulate their near flawless looks? Here, we take a look at 2018’s most iconic women to discover what their fashion says about them and how you can replicate their most famous outfits.

MEGHAN MARKLE

A soon-to-be royal and constantly in the spotlight and under the media microscope, Meghan Markle is under more pressure than ever to look, and dress, the part. Young, stylish and confident, Miss Markle has long been a style icon for women across the world. However, possibly the most interesting aspect of her outfit choices is how they’ve transformed.

During the actress’ Suits days, we’d often see her donning high heels, bandeau dresses, skirts with high hemlines and more daring cuts, such as low v-necks and slit detailing. In 2018, she’s pushed these to the back of the wardrobe in favour of something more elegant; long, belted coats and simple ankle boots to achieve a casual-chic vibe.

Overall, Markle’s dress sense hasn’t only become more sophisticated and reserved, but has also evolved from all-American girl to British fashionista. Gone are the graphic tees and straight leg jeans; in their place are tailored blouses and laced midi dresses that evoke a sense of royal-appropriate sophistication. Then again, when she attended the Invictus Games with Prince Harry, she chose to wear simple jeans with a plain shirt, perhaps showing the world that she can still incorporate dressed-down looks despite her impending title. Versatility, then, is her watchword.

HOW TO STEAL HER STYLE

The important thing to remember is that you don’t have to dress prim and proper 24/7 when you’re emulating Meghan Markle’s look. Although her style has certainly matured and reined itself in to a degree, there are still bursts of chic provocation. Her braless, gold-embroidered tulle and silk gown which she wore for her engagement portraits is just one example of her ability to infuse formal events with contemporary fashion.

Inject just a touch of the risqué when replicating the Meghan Markle style to keep it interesting. Team shirt-dresses with low heels, off-the-shoulder tops with plain skinny jeans and flats, and low-cut blouses with cigarette trousers and a tailored blazer.

RIHANNA

Even before Rihanna received the CFDA Fashion Icon Award in 2014, her looks were a huge part of her celebrity status. The star’s ability to predict and pioneer styles, no matter how revolutionary, has propelled her to the highest echelons of celebrity fashion, which makes her one of the world’s top style icons, and one women around the world wish to emulate.

Since fashion is evolutionary, it stands to reason that Rihanna’s style has also transformed since she rose to fame in 2005. Reflecting on Rihanna’s early fashion choices, many of her outfits gave the impression of a young, confident, sweet girl — think strappy dresses, rara skirts, crop tops, and boyfriend jeans. Within a few years, Rihanna edged her style to a more rebellious side, designed to enhance her ‘bad girl’ status. During this period, we saw bralettes paired with hot pants aplenty.

In time, RiRi updated her look again — this time blending her edgy façade with nuances of high-fashion. Enter, the famous naked dress of 2014. Made of nothing but Swarovski crystals and fishnet fabric, the design of this iconic gown was overtly high fashion.

Clearly, Rihanna’s eye for sartorial credibility hasn’t faltered. Her fashion line, FENTY PUMA, is forcing back the boundaries of standard sports styles and taking athleisure into uncharted territory, creating a high-fashion offshoot of feminine sportswear.

STEAL HER IDEAL STYLE

Throughout her style-icon life, Rihanna has always advocated the use of vibrant colours and fabrics. Over the years, we’ve seen her in everything from feather-embellished bejewelled bikinis to silk emerald tracksuits for women. To replicate it, you need to harness her confidence and sense of adventure.

Combine stiletto heels with denim playsuits or tracksuit bottoms, then dress for the evening in something feminine but outlandish, like the lilac tulle mini dress she wore to Fenty Beauty’s launch party.

Rihanna adores wearing shirts and coats that hang off her shoulders, putting a fresh twist on the cold-shoulder fashion movement. So, incorporate strapless tops and bralettes into your look to ooze the same level of seductive sophistication.

MARGOT ROBBIE

Australian actress, Margot Robbie, has experienced a rapid rise to fame and success. In just two years, Robbie went from Neighbours cast member to global film star, throwing her talent, character and style into the world’s harshest spotlight.

What we find most interesting about Robbie’s look is how, despite some transformations, it has retained a laid-back vibe synonymous with her home country. Robbie blends casual-chic daytime attire with Hollywood-ready evening outfits effortlessly, which means emulating her style opens a world of possibilities.

The plunging, gold slit dress she wore this year to the LA premier of I, Tonya, compared to the long-sleeve, crew neck frock she donned for the Wolf Of Wall Street premiere in 2015; highlights a growth in sartorial confidence, and possibly, industry acceptance.

Robbie’s style is feminine, yet eclectic. From sultry lace jumpsuits and conservative high-neck gowns, to girly polka dot dresses and sophisticated belted tapered trousers, the essence of Robbie’s style poses the idea that each occasion has a dress code, and it is up to the individual to infuse it with their preferred style.

HOW TO STEAL HER IDEAL STYLE

Let the tone of the event guide your choices if you want to incorporate Robbie’s style. Sneakers, logo tees and denims give off her signature, laid-back, Aussie-girl vibe when the occasion is suitably low-key, while plain playsuits, kimonos, sandals, and asymmetric skirts reign supreme during dressed-up day events.

Channel your inner celebrity diva by incorporating a selection of these stars’ staples fashion pieces into your everyday look.

Great if the weather is warm, but even better when there are muddy puddles to jump in and trees to climb. Make sure your kids are wrapped up warm in comfy clothing and head out to explore the wilderness. Become a nature detective, looking for bugs and birds. It’s an activity that’s fun for all ages, in any weather.

GEOCACHING

If you’ve not heard of Geocaching, you’ll be hooked soon enough. Follow your GPS system to find hidden goodies in this real world outdoor treasure hunt.

BUILD A FORT

Great for rainy days, this one; get creative and build a fort in your living room. Grab your bed sheets, cushions and chairs and create a den, perfect for watching films with an indoor picnic. Sounds simple, but it’s every kid’s favourite indoor activity.

CREATE A MOVIE

If you’ve got a whole day to fill, why not script, film and edit your own movie? Get the kids to write the script, use your smartphone to film it and sit down at the end of the day for the premiere. Popcorn, of course, is mandatory.

CAMP IN THE GARDEN

On warm nights, you can feel a million miles from home, even though you’re just a few feet away from the back door! Pitch up your tent, roast marshmallows over a campfire and read ghost stories. When you’re done, study the stars to give the little ones a little perspective on the bigger picture of life.

HOST A SPORTS DAY AT HOME

Get moving with a makeshift sports day at home. Grab your eggs and spoons, use pillow cases for the sack race and create your own obstacle course. A great, fun day in the sun at a low cost. What’s more, it’s active, so great for stretching those legs and getting a spot of exercise.

HAVE A PICNIC

Travel to a local park and play frisbee or football. Enjoy playing team games and treat yourself to a homemade picnic once you’re worn out. Pack healthy treats, sandwiches, fruit and cakes for the perfect picnic in the park. Just remember a rug or you’re going to be hearing a whole lot of moaning about ant bites.

8 IDEAL WEDDING GIFTS FOR THE COUPLE WHO HAVE IT ALL

So, wedding season is shortly upon us, and the invitations are stacking up. As the wish lists empty and inspiration runs dry, choosing a suitable, unique gift each and every time can get tricky. Things get even trickier when confronted with a bride and groom to-be who fall firmly on the more abundant side of affluence. For the newlyweds who have everything,  the traditional ‘home start’ items (kettles, toasters, table linine and the rest) are irrelevant; most couples have lived together for some time, in houses already appointed and furnished. So, you need to choose something personalised, couple-specific and imaginative. Well, we’re here to help. Here are 10 IDEAL wedding gifts for the couple who have it all.

AN INSTANT CAMERA WITH HAPPY SNAPS OF THE DAY

An incredible 95% of Brits believe that giving a present which makes someone smile is more valuable than receiving an expensive gift, and we couldn’t agree more. And nothing will make the newlyweds beam more than pictures of all their friends and family enjoying themselves on their special day. We all love to look at snaps, but we very rarely remember to take them; an instant camera or polaroid then, could be the answer.  Sure, the quality may not be as good as their professional photographer’s, but that’s not the point. Because you know people well, you’ll be able to get up, close and personal shots of the wedding guests in natural, unforced and unbridled action.  Make sure you get some really fun snaps, from recreating that famous Oscars selfie to a hilarious Mannequin Challenge still.

A CHARITABLE DONATION

Give the gift of giving instead of an item destined to gather dust in the attic. Often the post-wedding accumulation of ‘stuff’ is a curse more than a blessing, especially to those living in ‘cosy’ London flats or couples bound for an adventure abroad. A charitable donation will bring good karma all round and improve lives who need it more than the couple who have it all.

PERSONALISED CHAMPAGNE ACCESSORIES

Help the newly weds celebrate their marriage in real style with the gift of champagne. ‘Well, that’s not very unique’ we hear you say, but bear with us. Go the extra mile by personalising champagne glasses and even the cooler. Now that is unique. The good guys at Inkerman supply unique wedding gifts, including embossed champagne flutes and coolers, handmade in Britain and presented in their iconic red boxes, with an option to personalise the present with an engraving. We’re thinking the couple’s name and the wedding date is a pretty fitting way to commemorate the big day in style. Plus they can bring them out on every wedding anniversary. Cheers!

SOMETHING HOMEMADE

Nothing beats an item made lovingly with the bare hands of the gift giver. It shows thought, care and real effort; so much more than simply flashing your credit card at something unimaginative. There’s such vast scope for homemade presents too; it could be something destined for the big day, such as making the wedding cake or an element of the decoration, or something to be enjoyed further down the line, like a commemorative cushion depicting part of the event or lino print of the flowers used in the wedding bouquet.

A TREE

Back on the altruistic side of the spectrum, planting a tree in the couple’s name is a great, thoughtful present which benefits the environment and nature rather than the newlywed’s storage. What better gift to give than helping tackle climate change?

A MEAL VOUCHER

We all love a meal out. A free meal out, though, has an even more indulgent feel; there’s not many better feelings than eating and drinking to your heart’s content safe in the knowledge that you won’t be settling the bill at the end. A meal voucher, then, is a great gift for gourmands, and can be personalised by choosing somewhere you know has real meaning to the couple; maybe the place where they had their first date, for instance? Make the evening even more special by enlisting the help of the restaurant’s chefs to write a personal message of congratulations on the dessert plate!

A COUPLE’S COOKING CLASS

Yep, we know the above sounds great, and we’d be stoked to receive such a gift, but as the old proverb goes; Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime. Send the newly weds your best wishes by giving them the skills to cook tasty dishes, with a cooking class or even course. Make sure you couch the gift in words which don’t offend; you don’t want to say their cooking isn’t up the scratch! In all seriousness though, it’s a great couple’s activity and will benefit them for the rest of their life together. The couple who cooks together, stays together, after all.

A STAR

It sounds a bit out there, but it’s certainly unique! Name a star after the happy couple for a symbolic, enduring gift which we doubt many other newleds have had the pleasure of receiving. Every time they have a romantic meal underneath the stars or tackle taking the kids camping in the future, they’ll be able to look up and remember how their married life together began.

6 IDEAL NETWORKING TIPS THAT WILL ACTUALLY WORK

Networking – that shameless tit-for-tat experience where you only mix with people to further your own career. Don’t you hate it when you go to an event and people use lingo like ‘let’s touch base and take a thought shower together’? No one actually speaks like that in real life. There’s something about the idea of networking that seems forced and unnatural, an awkward exchange, where people just want to get a piece of someone. Feigning interest in people socially so you can fleece them in business? Nah, that’s not for us.

But, if you can bear the B.S and bravado, networking, when done right, can have real benefits for your company and often your personal life too. We like to think of it as a chance to make new friends and learn about others’ stories. So, here are 6 IDEAL networking tips that will actually help.

GO PREPARED

How embarrassing is it when you need to take down someone’s number and you’re scribbling down their details on the back of a folded napkin with a pen borrowed from the waiter? Not a good look and certainly not a professional one. Going in prepared, then, is essential. Make sure your phone is fully charged in case you need to take down some names and numbers. Carry a pen and notepad, and do a little snooping prior to meeting people so you’re well informed and ahead.

Although we’re living in a digital world, paper business cards are still a vital part of networking and carry a certain clout when presented. A well designed one (such as from the guys over at helloprint.co.uk) can be be a good conversation starter and statement, so remember to take one with you. Don’t be boring and just have your logo on it, make yours stand out from the crowd, with a friendlier, more personal touch perfect for making things (and you) more memorable.

WHAT CAN YOU OFFER?

Don’t go to a networking event with the selfish mindset of ‘what can I get out of this?’  – this is shortsighted and won’t get you anywhere. Networking should never be about the value you can extract from others. Instead, think about what you can offer other people. Networking is not a zero sum game. Like everything in life, the more you help others – expecting nothing in return – the more you’ll get out of it.

PLAN SOME ICEBREAKERS

We’ve all been there, and we’ve all felt the pain of uncomfortable pauses; you meet someone and after the initial hello and how do you dos, awkward silence ensues. Clearing your throat or filling the silence with inane ums and ahs just won’t do. Instead, have an icebreaker (or two) prepared, for when that frosty atmosphere needs smashing.

As much as you want conversation to flow naturally, having a few questions up your well ironed shirt sleeve to get things moving is no bad thing. Paying a sincere compliment; directly, ‘love your shoes’, or in a more subtle way, ‘care to share some of your insights on…’ works well. Equally, being honest about the forced nature of the situation can thaw relations pretty quickly; ‘I’m useless at this networking stuff, what shall we talk about?’ has an amusing, self-deprecating air.

SHARE A PERSONAL STORY & YOUR PASSIONS

Ditch the sales pitch and share some personal stories or talk about your passions, as that’s when you’ll show your best side. Networking is all about building a relationships, not simply about talking shop, so veer off the well trodden path of discussing colleagues and business interests and instead talk about something close to your heart. The enthusiasm in your voice and twinkle in your eye will make a long lasting impression and hopefully open up a more honest, open and fruitful relationship.

ASK FOR AN INTRODUCTION

It’s amazing how one introduction can change everything and open so many doors for your business. Proactive is better than passive, so quit standing in the corner waiting for someone to speak to you and ask an associate for an introduction. It sounds small, innocuous even, but it shows a sense of initiative and effort. Better still, a simple ‘I don’t think we’ve been introduced. I’m……..’ works wonders; crisp and assertive. Perfect.

DON’T FEAR THE BIG SHOTS

A certain trepidation always exists when considering approaching one of the key players at a conference. What if I make a fool of myself? What if they’re not interested in what I have to say? Well, those who never try, never succeed, so banish the nerves and gun for the most senior, well respected, knowledgeable figure in the building. Your confidence will be richly rewarded.

8 IDEAL WAYS TO KEEP EVERYDAY COSTS DOWN

If you dread checking your bank account everyday, then it’s time to start thinking about where your money goes.  Sure, we all overspend unnecessarily, from taking a trip to your local store to pick up one thing and coming back with a bag full of shopping, to going for drinks and unnecessarily having ‘one more for the road’.

But before you beat yourself up too much, it’s not your fault. According to research, humans are hardwired to overspend and behave irrationally, naturally, when it comes to managing money.  While science proves you may not be able to control yourself all of the time, trimming your daily budget can truly add up to some super sizable savings. It’s time to take control of your spending. We’ve teamed up with the guys over at Stagecoach, who have reasonably cheap bus fares, to reveal 8 IDEAL ways to keep everyday costs down.

USE MONEY NOT CARDS

A contactless payment here, a swipe of the credit card there; sometimes it’s hard to know where all your money goes. Ditch the plastic and start paying with cash, it feels more tangible than using a card and is easier to monitor. Set up a realistic budget (otherwise your setting yourself up for failure) and withdraw your allowance for the week – then hide your debit card. You could even divide your cash into different purses – one for for food, one for rent and one for fun. If you run out of cash then it’s time to stop spending.

CHANGE THE WAY YOU TRAVEL

Whether you drive a car or commute to work by train, prices are only going up at the moment.  So, think about changing the way you travel. This could even be as simple as changing your ticket type (split-ticketing, for example, involves buying a number of tickets for one long journey instead of one ticket). Or instead of buying a bus ticket every day, with a megarider ticket, for instance, you’ll be able to travel as much as you want and can potentially tailor the ticket type to your own travel needs. Whether you’re in need of a weekly bus pass for your travels, or a monthly one — you will find yourself making a saving in comparison to buying a ticket every day.

You could, of course, think about changing your mode of transport all together.  Those who have their own vehicle will spend a whopping £168,880 on it over a lifetime.  Breaking some of this down on a yearly basis; on average, petrol costs around £1,052.04 while servicing a vehicle costs can add up to £441, plus a whopping £145.80 on parking.

DRINK LESS FROM COFFEE SHOPS

The average Brit visits a coffee shop around three times every week – that’s 156 times a year with an average spend of £8.52. That’s before you consider travel expenses, which when totted up makes an annual average spend of £2,600, a majority of which could be saved if you were to opt for taking your own coffee to work. To put this in perspective with a cup brewed at home, a 250g pack of ground  Douwe Egberts can make you up to 30 cups of coffee. When looking to see how much a 1kg pack would cost on Amazon (£15), each cup of coffee would cost around about 13p. So, try taking a flask to work. Plus you’ll be helping the environment by not using so many disposable cups. Simples.

STOP SMOKING

You’re spending on average £2,796 a year and you’re killing yourself – enough said.

BULK COOK YOUR EVENING MEALS

Set aside some time on Sunday and make a few different dishes for the week. Put them in the freezer. You won’t be tempted with takeaways and going out for a ‘quick bite’ after work when you’ve got a delicious homemade meal waiting for you. Also, don’t be ashamed to be that person sifting through the reduced section – just freeze your bargains and use them to cook another time.

SWAP DINNER FOR DRINKS

You can still have a social live and save money at the same time. Instead of dinner, suggest going out for a few drinks instead – happy hour anyone?  Or offer to cook some dinner for everyone (enter the tasty home cooked meal waiting for you in the freezer).  If you really must eat out, go for dinner at BYOB restaurants – not paying for alcohol will save you a ton.

MAKE YOUR OWN LUNCH

Let’s face it, buying your lunch on-the-go is easy. It’s a convenient option – saving us our precious time to relax at home. But what if we told you that, on average, forking out for lunch every day could cost you £1,288 a year, according to research by VoucherCloud. Evidently, you could make a huge saving by preparing your lunch at home — whether this is making a quick sandwich, eating your leftovers from last night or even batch cooking some soup at the weekend.

PRACTICE DELAYED GRATIFICATION

Repeat after us – never buy on impulse. Instead of buying something from the shop that you’ve fallen for – stop. Bookmark it, go home, sleep on it and reconsider. Chances are you don’t like it half as much as you thought when looking at it through a different lens. That said, one way to keep down your costs is to treat yourself. A little bit of frivolous spending here and there will help you feel less restricted. But this one takes some self-restraint.

HOTEL REVIEW: LA VERANDA, PHU QUOC – THE IDEAL TIMELESS ISLAND RESORT

‘An island paradise’ is a claim often floated by hotel companies, and given wings by those not knowing any better. La Veranda, on Vietnam’s Phu Quoc island, can easily own such a description, however. Paradise, this most certainly is. With lush tropical gardens and grand French colonial style buildings, the resort has a timeless beauty that harks back to a bygone era. This refined hotel is definitely one for the more discerning traveler, with all the features, flourishes, trinkets and tweaks which turn a superb location and building into something just that little bit more special.

IDEA

Like most hotels – for better or worse – there is a story behind this one. The founder of the hotel, Madame Catherine, has a long and rich association with the island. Her childhood years, spent during the height of French rule, inspired her to design an authentic colonial style mansion which became La Veranda’s charming main house. Her love of this part of Vietnam meant a respect for the natural beauty of the place was essential; nothing too imposing, everything respectful and in its right place.

LOCATION

Situated on the island’s southwest coast, La Veranda’s location on central Long Beach is one of the busiest areas of the island, but you wouldn’t know it here. The hotel is surrounded by myriad other busy resorts and bustling restaurants, yet it maintains an air of peacefulness and complete privacy.  Tranquility is the watchword here, but its central location means access is easy and if you wish to venture out of the complex (but why would you?) then local restaurants and markets are just a short stroll away.

ATMOSPHERE

As soon as you step into La Veranda, it’s like you’ve been transported back into time with its quintessential French/tropical mash up style. A clay brick path guides you through a maze of exotic plants to your quarters, and everything seems to stroll at such a saunter, it seems like the laid back nature of the place has got deep into their soul.

ROOMS

The refined rooms, with louvered shutters, whirling ceiling fans and shaded Verandas are like the rest of the hotel – timeless. Smart lacquered furniture and period collections adorn the rooms, each unique to the room, creating a really personal touch. The dark mahogany four poster beds complete the look. Ground floor rooms open out onto a well maintained garden, while above balconies overlook the sea. It’s very much a case of ‘one of those good problems’ when choosing which level to house yourself.

Organic bathroom products used in the much lauded spa are also provided in the showers; it seems no expense is spared in the luxury stakes, and it’s the kind of superb attention to detail one comes to expect from such a place.

FACILITIES

The spa is the focal point of the facilities at La Veranda, and we’ve covered it in more detail here. Complimentary morning yoga classes are held the beach, led by a professional yet approachable instructor; a really perfect way to set yourself up for a day of relaxation.

As though they’re able to read our restless minds, a complimentary taxi trip to the gorgeous Sol Beach is provided if you fancy a change of scenery, sand and sea wise. Sol is isolated from the rest of the island and incredibly peaceful, with a small restaurant owned by the hotel grilling up freshly caught fish and serving ice cold beers. Heaven!

If you’re on honeymoon and you want to make the most of all the romantic offerings, the resort offers a candle lit dinner on the beach, underneath your very own canapy, watching the sunset; the ultimate romantic experience.

FOOD

La Veranda features two restaurants. The Peppertree offers a fine dining menu with renditions of French classics as well as dishes from the Vietnamese repertoire given playful, interesting twists. Le Jardin, which is a more casual affair with all-day dining and themed buffets, overlooks the ocean and as such, is perfect for a lazy lunch. In the summer they have barbecue parties on the beach with grilled fish and meat galore.

On the grounds of the hotel there’s an organic garden, where the staff grow salad leaves and herbs, with a tour available if you wish; a really nice touch, we think, and indicative of the vibe of the place. The welcome drink and macaroons are worth mentioning; tropical, sharp flavours of fruit and zest were perfect for arriving in the blazing sunshine.

WHY GO

No matter the season, there is no limit to how low and slow you’ll go at La Veranda. When the weather is wet you can enjoy the spa and fine cuisine; when the sun breaks through the clouds, the beach has its arms wide open. La Veranda is a sophisticated resort with a chilled out pace which means it never becomes overly formal or stuffy. Perfect for its island location, and fitting of its rightful claim as ‘paradise’.

5 IDEAL DINNER PARTY DISHES FOR EASTER

Easter is a time for creative cooks to show off their most impressive mini egg-hatching cakes and decadent chocolate desserts. With the annual holiday falling on the first bank holiday of the year, why not spend the long weekend cooking up an Easter feast for your friends and family? While the famous Lindt chocolate bunny rules the holiday season, savoury Easter dishes often get sidelined. Steve Smith from Bohemia in Jersey believes there’s much more to an Easter feast than over-indulging on chocolate eggs and hot cross buns! The Michelin-starred chef recommends his 5 top dishes for a show-stopping Easter dinner party.

EASTER EGGS

Devilled eggs are a great canapé or starter dish. After boiling your eggs, half them and spoon out the yolk. Mayonnaise and mustard always work well, but you can be as creative as you wish with the filling. You can also be playful with the garnish – thinly sliced olives make for great Easter bunny ears!

SEASONAL SOUP

Jersey Royal Soup is a great starter dish for an Easter feast. Sweat the onion and leek in butter without colouring, and then add potatoes, stock and double cream. Simmer gently for 10 minutes, then finish by blending together the ingredients and finally add fromage blanc.

HOOKED ON SHELLFISH

Langoustine is in season during this time of year, so it’s always a popular choice with diners during the Easter period. The shellfish goes particular well with parsnip and sea herbs cobnuts.

LOAD UP ON LAMB

For the main event, roast lamb is the ideal spring dinner party main dish – providing your guests aren’t vegetarian! Consider purchasing a lovely lamb loin & braised neck, which is delicious with peas and roscoff onion.

SPRING MEANS GREEN

Purple sprouting broccoli is a delicious side dish to serve your dinner party guests, as it goes well with most meats and is in season in April. Add roasted garlic and pickled walnuts, as they have a savoury-sour flavour which perfectly complements the greens.

7 IDEAL WAYS TO BOOST YOUR WELLBEING

Hey you. Are you feeling unfulfilled? Are you moping around at home feeling sorry for yourself? If you’re reading this article you’re probably looking for ways to help you feel better. Well, the answer you won’t find through the internet alone. A little proactivity where your state of mind is concerned can go a long way, and scrolling, swiping and clicking won’t alleviate a low mood alone.

Instead, you can boost your wellbeing by taking ownership of how you live your life.  With this in mind, here are 7 IDEAL ways to boost your wellbeing.

HELP OTHERS

Perhaps this will come as a surprise, and perhaps it’s good news; but improving your own wellbeing isn’t just about you. Evidence suggests that giving too, and helping, others improves our mood. Even the smallest act can count, including issuing a smile, saying thank you or simply paying a compliment. Are you thinking something nice about someone? Then why not drop them a Whatsapp message, or better yet pick up the phone and tell them.

COOK YOUR OWN MEALS & EAT WELL

There are so many benefits to cooking for yourself and others. We believe that cooking your own meals is therapeutic; good for the soul as well as the taste buds. Preparing a meal for others makes us feel happy and connected, bringing people together and enhancing social interaction. There’s also an element of self care in cooking. When you cook good food for yourself, you’re nourishing your mind and body and a sense of purpose and pride is restored.

Make sure you include plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables in your diet, prioritising variety and colour to ensure you’re getting the full spectrum of nutrients. If you’re going to snack, make sure your in-between-meal eating is healthy, too; right now we’re loving these Ember Biltong, which are nutritious, delicious and ethically sourced.

KEEP LEARNING

Just as cooking your own meals can make you feel accomplished, learning a new hobby increases our sense of wellbeing, too. Taking on and honing new skills can give you a sense of achievement and confidence unparalleled in other pursuits. Even picking up a new book or  reading about a new subject counts towards this end. There’s no shame in taking small steps at the start of the journey, after all.

GET ORGANISED AT WORK

Practicing a healthy work-life balance starts with aiming to work smarter, not harder. This is largely achieved by getting organised. If you’re the boss, hire employees you can delegate work to, and if you’re part of a team, share responsibility for managing your time more effectively.

SPEND MORE TIME WITH NATURE

Nature is soothing for your mind, body and soul. When you need a break from your busy life, consider going out into nature and losing yourself for a while. Take a long hike with your dog or walk a new trail in your area. Never feel guilty for completely removing yourself from your daily responsibilities for a few hours to clear your head and think in nature.

MAKE TIME FOR EXERCISE

It may not feel like it, but it’s always possible to squeeze in a little time for exercise during the working day. Are you a freelancer working from home? Then you could try out a workout video or why not do some star jumps every few hours? Do you work from an office? Then consider getting up a little earlier and doing a quick half hour before work. Even something as simple as taking the stairs, not the lift, or getting off the tube a stop early, can burn a few calories and help clear your mind.

Alternatively, why not dedicated some of your domestic space to a workout area, if you don’t have the time or willpower to join the gym? It’s possible to construct a small home gym in a garage, living room, or even in your garden.

GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

Stress, sleep, exercise  – it’s all connected to your wellbeing. If your body doesn’t get enough sleep, it can react by producing an elevated level of stress hormones. There’s nothing worse than settling down for a good night’s sleep, only to find yourself wide awake by 3AM, watching your alarm clock edge closer and closer to morning.

You know that you’ll be completely out of whack the next day and your feeling of wellbeing will seriously suffer.

Take control with a few simple steps; eliminate the blue light of devices an hour before bed; keep on top of exercise; don’t drink too much caffeine or alcohol in the evening and practice yoga or meditation regularly. Simple things we know, but all proven to be effective in granting a better night’s sleep.

5 IDEAL TIPS ON MAKING YOUR HOME A HAVEN

Depending on what you read, where you get your information, and who you believe; the world is either growing or shrinking; more dangerous or safer; and somehow slower and faster paced, all at once. We suffer from air pollution, noise pollution and mind pollution, and it’s pretty impossible to find a quiet moment, let alone space.

All of this means one thing; you need your home to be a relaxing enviroment. A place to rejuvenate, take stock and fully relax. Your home should be the space that you can reconnect with your inner self and unwind, so here are 5 IDEAL tips on making your home a haven.

GO NATURAL

Outside your door, new buildings are going up each and every day, and your view out of the window is worsening in tandem. Time then, to introduce more natural elements to the inside of your home as a counterpoint. Houseplants bring a natural calmness to your space; not only purifying the air that we breathe by removing the toxins that linger in houses, but also – as research has shown – making us happy too.

Take this back to nature ethos a step further and review the knick-knacks and accessories that you have in your home; the things that you display should be aesthetically pleasing and also give you tactile pleasure too – your haven should appeal to all of your senses. Choose a stone vase or wooden bowls that are functional and made from natural materials that satisfy our primitive needs. Pay attention to scents, too; a real dealbreaker between haven and have not.

SET DEVICE RULES AND BOUNDARIES

Yes, you may feel that rules are the antithesis of promoting relaxation and wellbeing but setting a few household boundaries is definitely the way forward. Set a limit as to where and when you can use your smartphone or mobile devices. There should be no devices in the bedroom, for example, and none used during mealtimes. Ban them when time is spent shared; there is nothing quite as disheartening as sitting down to watch a film only to realise that halfway through, half of the viewers have spent half of the time looking at the wrong screen.

GET ORGANISED AND DECLUTTER

We all have the tendency to keep hold of things just in case we need them in the future, but the reality is that all this does is clutter our house, and in turn, our minds. A disorganised, chaotic home is not conducive to relaxation; make no mistake. Instead, make an effort to declutter the detritus that blights your cupboards and drawers and make way for a clearer space – you will find that once your home is organised and clutter free, your headspace will feel the same.

KEEP IT CLEAN

A clutter-free home is one thing, but a messy home is another household beast all together. According to some psychologists, the way we keep our environment reflects our state of mind and has a huge bearing on our mood, productivity and mental well-being.  Indeed, the level of cleanliness around the home is a key dictator of our mood. It’s felt by most that mess leads to unproductiveness, or worse still, feeling unhappy. And it’s a vicious cycle; mess breeds mess, as we are less likely to find the motivation to clean. So if you want to make your home a haven, keep it clean. To take the hassle out of cleaning little and often should be your mantra; or you could always hire a home cleaning service. Simple.

BREAK FREE FROM ROUTINE

Spontaneity and surprise may seem counterintuitive to r’n’r, but the only ‘r’ achieved with routine is a rut – as in, ‘stuck in one’. The idea of home haven needn’t equate to slipping into your pyjamas at 8pm every evening with a post-dinner cuppa and re-runs of Dinner Date. No, it could take the form of making time each evening to spoil yourself, to go out, to host, to socialise and to self-improve. Variety is the spice of life, after all, and life’s best moments originate at home.

8 IDEAL FASHION TIPS FOR WOMEN UNDER 5’’4

Hey ladies of less than average height! Yes, it’s you we’re talking to. Being tall is overrated anyway. And although you may struggle to reach the top shelf at the shops, there’s no reason you can’t look fabulous while doing it. If you’re a petite lady, there a number of style hacks you can deploy to make the most of your features. So, here are 8 IDEAL fashion tips for women under 5’’4.

MEASUREMENTS, NOT SIZES

Even if your favourite high street retailer has a petite line, the sizing doesn’t always make sense and is often inaccurate and wildly variable from shop to shop. So, when shopping you should try not to take much notice of the sizes, instead pay attention to the measurements. Think about the functionality of the clothes too, perhaps you’ll be better suited to larger kid’s sizes (no shame in that, by the way) that can often be interchangeable with petite women’s clothing.

OVERSIZE, NOT OVERLAYER

If you’re petite, layers don’t tend to bring out the best you. Instead of looking fashion-forward, you’ll look as though you’ve drowned your small frame under a pile of clothing; overburdened, overstyled and overlayered. However, trends like the oversized look can look really special on the shorter woman. Opt for one key piece such as an oversized jacket, applied over something that skims your shape, for best results.

ACE ALTERATIONS

No matter what the labels say, everyone is a different size so when things don’t fit perfectly straight off the rack, DIY alterations can definitely come in handy. If you’re handy with a needle, thread and sewing kit, then take matters, literally, into your own hands. At the same time, if it’s a bigger task or you simply don’t feel confident tackling it, it’s important to know when to invest in a professional tailor. If you’ve spent serious money on a bigger item, for instance a coat you know you can wear year after year, a professional alteration will probably be worth it. Even consider getting your clothes tailor made for that perfect fit.

PAIRED SHOES AND BOTTOMS

A matching colour scheme at the lower end of your outfit can help to create the illusion of height. Match your black tights with black shoes, for example, or shades that are similar to your own skin tone if you’re going bare legged. Metallic shades can also work incredibly well as a neutral influence.

CUFFED SHIRTS AND JEANS

Instead of allowing your long, flowing shirt to overwhelm your frame, cuff the sleeves and tuck your shirt into your trousers or skirt to emphasise your shape. The same goes for jeans, either roll them up or tuck them under for a makeshift hem. As someone on the shorter side, it can often be difficult to find jeans that aren’t too long. This quick tip will help you out before you the find time get them altered.

SMALL HEEL, BIG DIFFERENCE

Stating the obvious, we know; heels will make you look taller. That, indeed, is their job! If you can’t bear a high stiletto, kitten heels have made a recent comeback, so your feet don’t need to whimper at the thought of hours of unnecessary pain. Even a little lift goes a long way. To keep on top of trends, check out Ashleigh Plus Size, a site that stays on top of what’s hot so you’ll never be out of the fashion loop.

CINCH YOUR WAIST

Big silhouettes don’t tend to work well for smaller women, but you can keep larger layers in check by belting them at the waist. This cleverly creates the illusion that you have longer-looking legs; something I’m sure we’d all welcome. High waist trousers are also a fabulous way to elongate your pins.

THE WONDER OF A LONG COAT

Nothing streamlines your silhouette quite like a long, tailored coat. A streamlined silhouette will not only make you appear taller, but make you look smarter too. A double win, then! Even a midi coat will do the trick, meaning there’s plenty on the market to choose from.

10 IDEAL REASONS WHY BRISTOL IS EVERY FOODIE’S DREAM CITY

10 IDEAL REASONS WHY BRISTOL IS EVERY FOODIE’S DREAM CITY

The National restaurant awards and Good Food Guide have paid some serious lip service to Bristol restaurants and it’s no wonder why. It is positively teeming with new restaurant openings, foodie events and fantastic suppliers. It’s only a matter of time before we uproot and move there – it’s that special. With this in mind, here are 10 IDEAL reasons why Bristol is every foodie’s dream.

FOOD FESTIVALS

If you know about food festivals, then you’ll know about Bristol. The city holds a number of excellent food festivals throughout the year which bring artisan producers as well as stalls from local restaurants – there’s so many it’s hard to keep up with them all. One of our favourites is Love Food Festival which runs all year round at various locations across the city.  However the biggest celebration is undoubtedly Bristol Food Connections which takes over Millennium Square and The Amphitheatre and brings together over 300 chefs, farmers and food producers. Food festivals enjoyed in the sun with a glass of cold, Somerset cider, we could think of no better way to enjoy a summer’s day.

INDEPENDENT NEIGHBOURHOOD RESTAURANTS WITH SERIOUS CLOUT

Bulrush, Adelina Yard, No Man’s Grace and Bird in Hand all occupy spots not necessarily on the beaten path. While footfall may not be their friend, the clout and cooking of these great restaurants still bring punters in every night of the week. The neighbourhood, cosy nature of these places certainly does them no harm.

THE COLLABORATIVE NATURE OF THE CITY

Many of Bristol’s top restaurants play host to chefs from other cities for collaborative cooking nights. Recently, The Pony & Trap has seen one of our favourites, Michael Bremner of 64 Degrees in Brighton, grace its kitchen. Other top restaurants host regular nights with star chefs from the city, and there is generally an atmosphere of collaboration and support amongst producers, suppliers and eating establishments which all makes for a great vibe.

TINY, UNIQUE RESTAURANTS

With space at a premium and youthful resourcefulness not bettered anywhere else in the country, recent years have seen a host of new openings in tiny spaces. Box-E, in a shipping container, and Woky Ko, are just two of our favourites which now call the Wapping Wharf dock area home.

THE PRODUCE

Bristol and the wider South West of England have some of the best produce in the country. Cheese is magnificent from this region, fish from Devon and Cornwall is driven up, freshly caught every day, and cider is consumed lustily and in great quantity. It’s a chef’s and a diner’s dream.

THE MARKETS

The city has loads of exciting markets throughout the year. For example St Nicks Market is home to some of the best street-food stalls in the South West. From Japanese to Indian, British to Thai, you can be transported round the world and back in a single day, leaving full and happy. The Harbourside Market is a community of foodies, makers, musicians and artists who turn Bristol’s Harbourside into a weekly festival – it has amazing street-food stalls that will make your mouth water.

WHITELADIES ROAD

This huge behemoth of a road cuts through Bristol and plays host to a number of great restaurants and bars. A night out of drinking, eating and carousing is sure to occur on Whiteladies Road. We particulary like the Cowshed, which celebrates local meat with aplomb, and Bravas, an extremely buzzy tapas joint.

CLIFTON

The beautiful area of Clifton is quite the hike – the incline is steep and long – but you’ll be rewarded with wonderful artisanal producers, independent pubs and quirky, unique restaurants.

THE SANCHEZ-IGLESIAS EMPIRES

Peter Sanchez-Iglesias and his brother Jonray, who sadly passed in 2015, set up Casamia in Westbury on Trym before moving the critically acclaimed restaurant to its current location, overlooking Bristol’s floating harbor. Casamia is currently ranked 6th in the country by the National Restaurant Awards and offers a seasonal, innovative tasting menu which is simply mind blowing.

But that’s not all. The empire has expanded to incorporate two new ventures; Paco Tapas and Pi Shop – both on the same small strip as the mothership. Each do their thing with flair and expertise, the tapas carefully sourced and sherry flowing while the pizzas at Pi Shop are blistered, fresh and authentic. Bristol’s dining scene owes much to these incredible, ambitious brothers. Jonray’s memory lives on in the success and identity of all three offerings.

BRILLIANT CHEFS INCLUDING…

Josh Eggleton: With recent stints on Great British Menu bringing greater attention to the cheeky, charming chef, Josh Eggleton is hot property in the culinary world. His fine-dining, Michelin-star bestowed pub, The Pony and Trap, offers high level cooking in cosy, welcoming surrounds – a winning formula. He has also recently opened Salt & Malt, a fish’n’chip shop with excellent attention to sourcing and detail.  He also has a hand in the excellent, sustainable Chicken Shed.

James Wilkins: Chef and owner of Wilks Restaurant, James Wilkins worked all over the world before settling in Bristol to open his fine-dining destination restaurant. A Michelin-star followed. The restaurant only offers a tasting menu, which is ever changing. We particularly like the section on the website dedicated to ‘in season and on the menu’, followed  by a list of enticing ingredients, which whets the appetite for the seasonal, local food journey you receive here.

5 IDEAL PLACES TO EAT TAPAS IN LONDON

Spanish food in London has come a long way in recent years. Where once you would find only Tesco’s charcuterie presented on a wooden board and a glass of abrasive sangria, now there are Barcelona style boquerias and Basque country Pinxtos bars on every corner of every neighbourhood. The Revolución is in full swing and Londoners, always on the go and fond of a drink, have taken to small, fresh plates and glasses of sherry with zest.

Here are our ideal places to eat tapas in London:

Barrafina – Dean Street

No list of London restaurants, let alone London tapas restaurants, is complete without Barrafina. Frequently voted as London’s favourite place to dine, Barrafina’s popularity has led to two more springing up in central London.

The original has moved from Frith to Dean Street but the relocation has maintained what made the first Barrafina so great – a buzz created by simple decor, bar-stool seating only and a no reservations policy which made you feel blessed to nab a seat. The open kitchen view of the swashbuckling chefs only adds to its charm. The simplicity of the menu stays true to its Barcelona-bistro inspiration, with a focus on fresh seafood cooked and presented, zero-frills. Must-try dishes include a courgette flower stuffed with goat’s cheese and with garnished honey, and barbecued quail with aioli. Arrive early, order smartly and you’re in for the best Spanish food possible without hopping on a plane.

Address: 26-27 Dean St, Soho, London W1D 3LL

Website: www.barrafina.co.uk

Boqueria – Acre Lane

Taking inspiration from the same Barcelona tapas bars as Barrafina, Boqueria, a 10 minute walk from Brixton tube station, offers a choice of bar seating or a beautiful, airy room at the back. Booking is essential as this South London favourite is heaving every night, and with good reason. Perennial favourites like jamon iberico and tortilla rub shoulders with more original creations such as red tuna carpaccio with almonds and soy sauce. We particularly love the foie and pedro ximenez on toast – a bite or two offers both sweetness and umami which will have you ordering a second and maybe even third.

Address: 192 Acre lane, SW2 5UL

Website: www.boqueriatapas.com

José Tapas Bar – Bermondsey

Chef Jose Pizzaro has worked in and opened a string of Spanish restaurants across the capital in his 15 years here. Jose Tapas Bar was his first solo opening, and in our opinion, his best. It is a no frills affair, with dishes listed on a chalkboard divided into cold cuts and cheese on one side, and specials on the other. The menu changes daily and depends on what looks good in nearby Borough Market. His hake and aioli was a particular favourite the last time we visited. The bar also stocks some rare sherries which suit the mostly standing room-only style of the place.

Websitejosepizarro.com

Address: 104 Bermondsey St, London SE1 3UB

Brindisa – Borough Market

Another tapas bar located close to Borough Market, Brindisa is always alive with city workers spilling out onto the street, having a drink and a snack. The bustle and brio is magnetic, making it impossible to walk past without dropping in to sample some of their excellent Spanish cold meats and cheeses – their ‘selection of ibericos’ is worth the visit alone. They also do a mean ‘Spanish Sunday Roast’ if the traditional roast beef and all the trimmings just isn’t ticking your boxes.

Address: Borough Market, 18-20 Southwark St, London SE1 1TJ

Website: www.brindisa.com

Lurra – Seymour Place

Not a Tapas bar per se, but certainly in thrall to the Basque barbeque institution Etxebarri, this Spanish joint has gained huge popularity amongst London diners since its arrival in 2015. Without doubt, punters flock here for one thing above all else, Lurra’s 17 year-old (a LOT in cow’s years) Galician beef.

It arrives sizzling on a hot plate, unadorned but for a pinch or two of top quality Maldon sea salt, with a charred, almost bitter crust and VERY rare middle. It is delicious – the age of the cow allowing for a maturing flavour and complexity that is impossible to achieve in a younger one. The restaurant does a few smaller, starting plates very well indeed – cod brandade in courgette flower a particular highlight –  but with the beef being this darn tasty and generous, we wouldn’t recommend over sedating your appetite before the main event.

Address: 9 Seymour Place, London W1H 5BA

Website: www.lurra.co.uk

Honourable mentions

Here are some other excellent options which didn’t quite make our top five, but are still well worth a visit.

Miss Tapas

A tiny, no reservations joint close to Peckham Rye Station, Miss Tapas is cheap and cheerful but does a roaring trade nightly, owing to a short, concise list of specials and reasonably priced but carefully selected regional wines.

Address: 46 Choumert Rd, London SE15, UK

Website: www.misstapas.com

Dehesa

A Spanish-Italian hybrid, Dehesa offers classy, well executed small plates and a great wine list just off Oxford Street.

Address: Kingly Court, 25 Ganton St, Carnaby, London W1F 9BP, UK

Website: www.saltyardgroup.co.uk

Rosita and The Sherry Bar (formerly Lola Rojo)

A recent change in name and move to a more sherry focused, Pinxtos experience has done nothing to dampen the popularity of this great little place just a few minutes walk from Clapham Junction Station.

Address: 124 Northcote Rd, London SW11 6QU

Website: www.rositasherry.net

Moro

Spanish tapas with a nod to North Africa, the flavours of the Sahara are a welcome addition to this sometimes experimental, always delicious menu.

Address:  32 Exmouth Market, Clerkenwell, London EC1R 4QE

Website:  moro.co.uk

Pix Bar

Pix Bar offers a large but simple and affordable menu of cold cuts and snacks, and with many outposts across the city, you’re never far from your next glass of Pedro Ximenez.

Address: Seven Dials London, 63 Neal St, London WC2H 9PJ
