IDEAL TIPS: HOW GOING DIGITAL CAN SAVE MONEY IN YOUR HOME RENOVATION

The internet has allowed would-be home renovators to take their remodelling projects into their own hands and get truly hands-on with their DIY. With such a large proportion of home renovations running over budget, it’s ideal to save money wherever possible, but you still don’t want to compromise the quality of your rebuild. Here are a few ways that surfing online can save precious time and money next time you choose to redesign your home.

Do it yourself

From building furniture to plastering a wall or laying carpet, anyone can read online guides or watch YouTube and learn basic DIY jobs for free – forget the expensive manuals or video instructions! Doing as much work as you can yourself is a massive budget saver as labouring costs can venture into the hundreds just for a day’s work, and that could turn into weeks or even months. And thanks to laptops and smartphones, you can also take a video tutorial on site to make sure the job’s done correctly. It may be a little slower, particularly if you’re a newbie, but if you’re looking to cut the excess in your renovation budget, it’s certainly one expense you can scale back.

Background check your tradesmen

Even a keen DIY-er has to leave some jobs to the professionals, and most industry bodies strongly recommend hiring a registered tradesman for jobs such as rewiring a house, installing light fixtures or wall sockets or updating the plumbing. If you have a tradesman in mind, it pays to search them online to see if they’ve been in legal or financial trouble in the past and if other people have made comments on their work. Online review websites are sort of like an amplified word-of-mouth, where you hear personal experiences from real customers, and they’re a great indication of how professional a tradesman may be.

Look for bargains online

Many products and supplies are available very cheaply online from companies that don’t have to maintain expensive brick-and-motor stores, and some will even offer free samples if you want to be exactly sure of the quality. One supplier of cheap carpets online is Big Warehouse Sale, which offers samples and free delivery at a much lower cost than traditional carpet salesmen. It’s easy to be sucked into a deal that seems too good to be true, so make sure the website has a strong refund policy and has good reviews online. If you can, try to purchase from a business that has stock in the country, so you’re not stuck waiting for overseas shipping.

Renovating your house will nearly always be a headache, but it doesn’t have to hurt your wallet too. Use what’s available for free online to teach yourself the basics, check up on professionals and research the best bargains for otherwise expensive products, like wallpaper, timber or carpet. Thanks to the resources of the internet, it’s easier than ever to do your own research rather than relying on commercial services if you follow the right advice.

TECH TREKKERS DO IT IN STYLE: 3 IDEAL GADGETS THAT WILL TRANSFORM YOUR CAMPING EXPERIENCE

The chance to take on nature and test your trekking skills is an opportunity you rarely want to pass up. Breathing in cool mountain air, swimming naked in a stream and sleeping out under the stars are the perfect ways to escaping from the urban jungle and forget the rat race. If adventure is your middle name, there’s no shame wanting a few creature comforts while you tackle the wilderness.

Here’s a look at the sort of hi-tech tools and gadgets that can take your camping experience to a new level.

Your reward for a hard day’s trekking

The chance to take a hot shower to refresh and relax is one of the comforts trekkers most miss after a long day and climbing. Sometimes a wash in the stream just doesn’t cut it.

The Helio Pressure Shower highlights just how technology can bridge the gap and deliver some of those home comforts even when you are spending a weekend in the woods. The foot-pump allows you to control the pressure of the water and all you need is the power of the sun to heat up the water, giving you about five minutes of hot showering, almost anywhere.

You might want to also download a thermometer app for your smartphone so that you can check the weather and temperature in your location and confirm that the sun is going to help you enjoy a hot shower when you set up camp for the night.

A camping stove that delivers more than warmth

The traditional role of a campfire is to provide a source of heat to keep you warm and let you do some cooking but you can now get an added bonus of generating power with a BioLite CampStove.

This hi-tech stove allows you to burn wood to boil water in minutes and as you can use sticks and other biomass sources, you can dispense with the gas canister. The added bonus is that the device generates electricity for charging up your phone and other devices, plus it can keep your LED lights working too.

The stove has been neatly designed to save on space so you should find that it is not too difficult to bring with you a camping stove that is a very welcome technological addition to your trekking kit list.

A good night’s sleep

You might love sleeping out in the wild but you couldn’t be blamed for missing the comfort of a nice place to rest your head. You wouldn’t want to wake up with a crooked neck if you’ve a day’s trekking to be done, so investing in a decent air-assisted matress or pillow is a must.

The Incamp Insulated Airpad is a fine example of how you can now enjoy a good night’s sleep.

The bed can be inflated quickly and easily using your hands, saving your breath, and within minutes you will have a comfortable surface to sleep on. Built-in insulation keeps you warm and the integrated pillow is a real bonus too.

These are just some of the ways you can use technology to enhance your trekking experience and enjoy some extra comfort even when you are miles from civilization.

RESTAURANT REVIEW – FRENCH & CO, PHU QUOC – THE IDEAL PLACE FOR FRENCH PASTRIES

We love seafood, we love Asian aromats, spices and herbs and we love green tea.

Sometimes though, the comforts of home come calling and to resist the temptation is to betray your stomach’s deepest desires. French & Co at the JW Marriott resort in Phu Quoc is the perfect place to catch up on your coffee intake and indulge in some classic French pastries.

Idea

The resort in which French & Co lies caters for the international traveller, drawn to the JW Marriott brand, and Viets alike. Those from Vietnam have an affinity with pastry not bettered in Asia – French colonial taste brought this to the country’s fair shores.

French & Co, therefore, makes perfect sense, providing fine coffee and French pastries, as well as a few classics found in the bistros and breakfast places of Paris. A great way to start, or indeed end, the day.

Location

On the main promenade of the resort, housed amongst a spa, a gym and an art gallery of all places, French & Co is quietly unassuming. We were told that the resort hopes that this street of intriguing shops and amenities will become an island attraction – we can see why. It’s quirky and fun and perfect for its fantasy rich surrounds.

Atmosphere

Gorgeous French windows let just the right amount of light in. A collection of antique scales probably not bested by a museum line one of the walls. Newspapers are provided and of course the inviting, nostalgic aroma of freshly baked bread floats around whimsically. All in all, escapism personified.

Food

A table of fresh, interesting pastries is the focal point for hungry eyes but there’s more treats to be found on the menu in earnest. There are salads, cheese boards and charcuterie– really everything you want from a lunch with Francophile designs.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Drink

Signature smoothies and freshly blended fruit juices are a must – the resort’s vibe of ‘wellness’ perfectly encapsulated in a glass. Trung Nguyen (Vietnamese coffee) is a treat, too, no doubt made in a coffee press salvaged from a bygone era.

Must Try

We loved the Croque Monsieur – and we’ve eaten a fair few of these in our time! Creamy and rich with saltiness and good bread – it’s a taste a million miles away from the fresh, local seafood offered on the beach, but variety is the spice of life. We loved it.

Why Go

Too much of a good thing can turn into something bad. When you’ve eaten enough seafood that you feel gills growing on your hips and a fin emerging from your spine, take a time out in the escapist surrounds of French & Co, a lovely little place to consume your afternoon.

5 IDEAL WAYS TO BEAT THE HEAT THIS SUMMER

Summer is here. Brits are set to sizzle on the hottest this week! God knows, how many times we have been dreaming of that feel of sunrays on our skin! However, blue skies and high temperatures are perfect for beach holidays, not days spent in the office with a fan pointing at our faces. No one wants to be the office moaner and regularly complain that ‘It’s too hot’ so stay cool this summer with our five top tips

Keep those feet cool

Our feet help us maintain a lower temperature and they are one of the best parts of our body for getting rid of heat. This is the main reason, why some of us like to sleep with our foot outside our covers. Feet and ankles are sensitive to temperature as they have lots of pulse points.

You can easily cool down the whole body by dipping feet in cold water for a couple minutes. If you don’t have time to do it (or bucket with cold water under your desk) spray them with cooling spray, which will bring an instant relief. Try Carnation’s Footcare Cool Foot Antiperspirant (www.firstaidfast.co.uk, £3.14)

A billion Indians can’ be wrong

Strange as it sounds, hot drinks are able to cool you down more than ice-cold beverages. Why? A cup of brew stimulates heat receptors in the mouth, enhances circulation and eventually raises your body temperature. Once this happens, you will start sweating at an increased rate. When it evaporated, the sweat effectively cools you down. Try refreshing Clearspring’s Matcha Green Tea (www.clearspring.co.uk, £3.99).

Aloe Vera all the way

Does a thought of applying a creamy body lotion make you sweat? Even though it’s hot and sticky, your skin still needs to be moisturised. You can kill two birds with one stone by choosing a light-textured moisturiser with Aloe Vera. This natural extract is known from its cooling properties and has been used for years to help with sunburns. Go for Soothing Skin Gel by What Skin Needs (www.whatskinneeds.co.uk, £14.99)

Most of us are aware of the benefits of Aloe Vera applied on skin but the benefits are far wider – especially when taken internally. To replenish electrolytes and minerals lost due to dehydration on a sweaty day pour yourself a glass of Aloe Vera juice! Rich in Zinc, Magnesium, Potassium, Magnesium and Vitamins B, it’s your natural energy drink.

Take a chill pill

There are nutrients that can help you to cool down. “Curcumin, which is derived from turmeric root, has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and promotes circulation. By speeding up blood flow it reduces its stickiness and effectively cools your body down. Stock up on your ‘chill pill’ before summer starts and try CurQuMax by Quest Vitamins (www.qnutrapharma.com, £10.45).

Fresh sheets

Nothing worse than tossing and turning on sleepless and hot nights. Good quality 100 % cotton sheets are the best things to cover yourself with as they will allow the air to circulate and are the least irritating thing on your skin. If it’s really hot you could also try changing your sheets for fresh ones, keep a spare one ready to grab for when you need it. The feeling of a new, fresh sheet in the middle of a hot humid night can seem like a dream.

If things are more stifling, then check out these 4 things to consider when choosing the right air conditioning unit for your home.

6 IDEAL STORAGE SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR KITCHEN

Kitchens can be tough to keep organised, especially if you don’t have loads of storage space. With this in mind and the help of five-star supplier The Plastic People, who create kitchen splashbacks to add a stylish touch to your cooking area, we share some ideal storage solutions for kitchens.

Cutlery Organiser

For those of an obsessive compulsive disposition, a teaspoon in the knife section of the cutlery drawer can send an otherwise good day spiralling out of control. Indeed, according to the 2017 Houzz Kitchen Trends Study the kitchen storage solutions most opted for was a cutlery organiser, with 77 per cent opting for this first, as preference. That’s nearly eight out of ten dinner party hosts whose dishes didn’t get cold as they scrambled around looking for a clean fork.

Deep Drawer Organiser

We all know the drill. You’re trying to open your kitchen’s deep drawer to get out a frying pan and a handle has caught in the mechanisms. Not only is that out of reach, the whole drawer is rendered off limits. No so with a compartmentalised organiser, making everything easier to find, tidier, and not prone to interrupting your cooking session.

Pull-out waste or recycling cabinets

When you’ve got those potato peelings in your hand, or some cracked egg shells, you don’t want to be juggling waste, your lack of dexterity letting you down as you dessimate your newly varnished kitchen floor with rubbish. A simple pull-out waste cabinet solves all of this.

Corner carousel

Corner carousels utilise space which is otherwise unconquered – a real bonus in a tightly packed kitchen where space is at a premium. The simple, rotating movement is graceful and allows for easy access to larger equipment and utensils.

Pot and pan organiser

You have paid good money at your local butchers for a beautiful rib-eye steak. Your griddle pan lies under a pile of pans less up to the task of searing and sizzling. You’ve had a long day at work and you’re too lazy to unpack all of those pans. You ruin your steak with a pan meant for pancakes. Buy an organiser – save time in the long run. Nuff’ said.

Pull-out trays and/or shelves

The effects of a clean, organised kitchen are clear. The aforementioned 2017 Houzz Kitchen Trends Study suggests 69 per cent now spend more family time in their kitchen post refurb. These pull-out trays and shelves help you organise your herbs and spices to add sparkle to any meal and help you become a move creative masterchef in no time.

Your Storage Questions Answered

    • Up to 1 year in airtight containers; some items like dried beans can last up to 10 years.

And with that, we hope your ingredients last as long as your passion for cooking!

8 IDEAL THINGS TO PACK FOR SPONTANEOUS TRAVELLERS

There’s something about a spontaneous getaway that can make it even more fun and rewarding than a trip planned months in advance. An itinerary can be a beautiful thing, but making plans and exploring a new place on the fly without military precision can be a whole new experience – in a good way.

The only drawback? Sod’s law says there’s a pretty good chance that while you’re smugly en route to your late break, your phone charger’s still plugged in at home. Next to your pants. And that other vital item you needed.

But no fear, LateRooms.com has pulled together a list of must-haves for all spur of the moment adventurers (or the super organised) meaning you won’t have any packing related flaps the next time you steal away.

 A valid passport

Forgive us for pointing out the obvious, but always ensure you’ve got a valid passport, ideally with six months before it expires. Many destinations outside of Europe insist on this for entry, so if you frequently travel to Asia on business, or are partial to a spontaneous trip to Australia (as you do), then bear this in mind.

The universal charger and power bank

When it comes to chargers, prepare, prepare, prepare! Your sweet escape is made so much sweeter by being able to gloat about it online with a Facebook check-in or Instagram update.  There’s nothing worse than not being able to take those all important holiday snaps because of a drained battery.

Your best bet is to invest in a universal charger (don’t get caught out by the perennial two flat vs two rounded prongs dilemma!) and portable power bank (for when there isn’t a power source at all!) that you can keep packed and ready to go.

Invest in minis

Decant, decant, decant! Why lug around heavy toiletries, which take up precious space when you can stash your lotions and potions in miniature bottles and keep a set ready and primed for jetting off at a moment’s notice? In one fell swoop you’ll have killed two birds with one stone by ensuring you meet the pesky under 100ml requirements and freeing up much needed extra space in your luggage. Hotels are well known for providing mini bottles, so be sure to stock up for future trips. Also, get yourself a travel toothbrush and toothpaste that you keep in your bag so you don’t forget to pop yours in at the last moment.  No one wants to arrive at their destination with stale breath.

Currency and insurance

It’s always good to have a bit of spare cash to hand and even better when it’s in the correct currency. After all, the last thing you want to do is go on the hunt for an ATM as soon as you touch down. The best rates can often be found online, so don’t be afraid to quote these the next time you head to your local currency exchange, who will likely honour the rates they have on the web. Always try and come home with a few extra Euros so you’ve got a stash of cash ready and waiting, too.

Also, be sure to take out annual travel insurance. Hopefully you’ll never need to use it but it’s better to be safe than sorry, and a year-long solution means one less thing to worry about if you’re looking to get away sharpish.

Water purifier

Without sounding melodramatic having a water purifier in your bag of tricks could turn out to be a lifesaver. The LifeStraw is a great piece of kit – with no moving parts or need for a battery, it promises to remove a minimum of 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria and parasites – a bargain at £30 given the alternative is an upset tummy or worse.

Speakers

Everyone loves creating a bit of ambience on their travels with their favourite playlist – whether it’s in the hotel room or on the beach, and there’s no easier way to kill it than by having some tinny music playing pathetically from your phone. The solution? Get a mini speaker for about £15. Voila, music to your ears (and you won’t be reminiscent of that kid sat at the back of the bus annoying everyone).

Swiss army knife

Sounds random? Think again, this crafty pocket sized gadget can come in to use in all types of situations, from peeling fruit, to acting as a can opener, and opening bottles of beer – you name it, it can do it. A precautionary warning with this one, though: make sure it goes in hold luggage if you’re flying!

 A camera

Even though smartphones and their built in cameras are ubiquitous these days, get extra wow from your holiday photos with a dedicated camera. GoPros are great for capturing shots hands-free whether that be on the move, underwater or from a dizzying height. Or if you’re addicted to your smartphone, try out an attachment to improve your snaps – from a waterproof case to a wide-angled lens.

P.s. Don’t worry be ‘appy

Your smartphone is your greatest pal when it comes to making plans on the fly. There are tonnes of apps out there designed to make your trip plain sailing. The LateRooms.com App’s map functionality shows you which hotels are available in your immediate vicinity with just a tap, so you can literally choose where to stay when you arrive.  What’s more, its app only deals mean you can get some great late steals with up to 40% off hotel rooms. The app is available for free on both Apple and Android, just search ‘LateRooms.com’ in the App Store.

7 IDEAL WAYS TO ADD COLOUR TO YOUR YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE

Adding colour to your garden is a great way to make space brighter, more welcoming, and more fun. While you may worry that you’ll need to make large, expensive changes, or add lots of flowers to create a colourful garden, this isn’t always the case. There are many alternatives, cheap and easy ways to make your outdoor space more colourful. Here is a look at some of the best.

FENCING

Fencing supplies come in all different shapes, sizes, and styles so there is no need to stick to boring plain fencing. It’s a big part of your garden and one of the first things that catch your eye, so why not be bold and try some different colours. Most garden fences are a shade of brown, but there is no need for them to be. Try something bright and eye catching.

FURNITURE

If you’ve got comfortable, padded garden furniture, reupholster it in brighter colours. If you’ve got a wooden table and chairs, you could easily sand, paint, and varnish them to make them look totally different, or if you don’t currently have seating in your garden consider buying some alternate and quirky pieces.

ACCESSORIES

Large colourful pots and planters look great. A hot trend lately has been turning home accessories and other items into garden planters by simply hollowing out some space for plants.

Outdoor soft furnishings are another great option. These can include beanbags, cushions and throws. Just make sure you have storage space for anything that isn’t waterproof.

ADD TILES

Tiles can look awesome in the garden. Small tiles can be used to create a fantastic mosaic on walls, fences, floors, water features or tabletops. Go for bright, bold patterns to make a large impact.

GET ARTISTIC

Have you considered adding some artwork to your garden? This could be done by hanging pictures in weatherproof frames or by painting a mural directly onto your fence or wall. Let your imagination run free when choosing your designs, the bigger the better.

Alternatively, you can fuse the arty aesthetic with the functional and install dual purpose garden features. The guys at Outdoor Art Pros suggest both fountains and birdbaths fulfil this brief.

CREAT A COLOURFUL ENTRY

If you’ve got a gate or other access point in your garden, this is a brilliant place to focus colour. Creating a warm and colourful entry sets the tone for your whole home, not just the garden. Add flowering plants to the surrounding space and a nearby flower bed to welcome guests and increase your home’s kerb appeal.

FOLIAGE

Flowers are far from the only way to add pretty colours to your garden space. Colourful foliage is a fantastic alternative or accompaniment. Foliage doesn’t have to be green, like plants it comes in a range of colours. Planting with coloured foliage means your colours will last all year round, even when your plants aren’t flowering.

Of course, adding flowers to a garden area will always make it pretty and colourful, but that isn’t the only way to do it. Experiment with some of these ideas and have fun making your outdoor space a fun, relaxing environment to be enjoyed.

WHAT ARE THE IDEAL SOLUTIONS FOR A SEDENTARY JOB?

So, let’s talk about making your work life less sedentary.

“What? Why?”

Because it’s an important issue that’s facing many people, especially as our working lives become more and more desk-oriented. For hundreds of years, humans made their living by toiling in the fields – endless physical labour that meant the idea of working out wasn’t necessary. Work was working out. That’s just not the case anymore.

“So it’s just the cost of progress.”

To an extent. But lest we forget, materials like asbestos were once considered to be progressive – and look how that turned out. Sometimes, the cost of progress is higher than we should be willing to pay.

“So what does sedentary mean in a work context?”

No more do we bend over, stoop, and work on our feet all day. For an increasing number of people – especially in a services-based economy such as the one the UK has – a work day is more of a sitting day. We sit at a desk or on a production line, rarely doing much that requires being on our feet. That’s what a sedentary working life is; doing more sitting than standing, with few activities that would raise the heartbeat.

“Raising the heartbeat – so, cardio, basically? That’s what the gym is for!”

It is, yes, but unless you throw yourself into a course with Origym and become a fitness instructor, can you guarantee that the gym is going to be a part of your working day?

“No… but it’s a working day…”

Right, and you do that five days a week. So if you’re too busy to go to the gym on work days – and you’re recovering from the stress of the working week on the weekends – then what time does that mean for gym work?

“Maybe I can fit in a few gym visits during the working week?”

Maybe you can, but chances are, if you have a bad day at work then you’re just going to want to go home. Doesn’t it make more sense to try and improve the bulk of your day, the working hours, and give them a physical health focus?

“I guess – but what’s so bad about being sedentary?”

It’s been said that sitting costs more lives than smoking – that’s a bit of a stretch, if we’re honest, but it’s not too far off. When we sit, we’re just not using many bodily muscles. We’re not exercising our heart. Everything about our body relaxes, and in a sense, that’s a good thing – relaxation is important! But it’s also a bad thing if you’re in one position all the time, your heart only pumping at ‘resting’ speeds.

“Can it make me ill?”

It could do, though it will rarely be in a direct way. The more someone works behind a desk, the more their fitness level drops. If you’re not in shape, then you’re more likely to suffer from a variety of health conditions.

“Such as?”

Including but in no way limited to: obesity, heart problems, and even mental health issues.

“Mental health issues?”

Indeed; there’s a strong link between physical activity and levels of depression. It makes sense, given that exercise releases endorphins, which in turn put people in a better mood.

“So being less sedentary is a good thing.”

Now you’re getting it!

“But my job requires me to work from a desk.”

Yes, and –

“So do I need one of those standing desks?”

It’s inadvisable. Standing desks are a basic answer to a problem. If we label sitting as the problem – as many have done – then, okay, I’ll stand instead! It seems like a simple fix.

It’s really not, though. The problem isn’t sitting in and of itself; it’s the fact you’re not moving much. If you stand around all day, that’s really no different to sitting around all day. Sure, it’s a bit better for you in that it’ll work your legs and back more, but it’s still not enough.

“But how does that couple with having to work at a desk?”

For a start, go through your daily routine – how much of it directly involves sitting at the desk? Could you maybe stand up and lean over the desk at times? Or just stand up in general and stretch?

“My boss won’t allow that.”

This will often be the case if you work in a call centre or similar; any time out of your chair can be interpreted as you not working. That means you have to be more careful, and try and make the most out of your seated position.

“How do I do that?”

The most obvious answer is to swap out your chair (which is pretty terrible for your body anyway) for a Swiss ball –

“Hang on – what do you mean my chair is bad for my body?”

No matter how well designed an office chair is, it’s still not a particularly natural position. Lumbar support helps, but if you sit in a chair for too long, you will quickly feel yourself begin to stiffen up. Your muscles don’t like being in a chair; your body in general doesn’t like it either. You’ll see plenty of advice online as to how to make a chair more comfortable, which ignores the core fact that a chair won’t ever be comfortable for long periods of time.

There’s also the fact that the conventional desk arrangement isn’t good for your wrists and upper back, so a height adjustable desk if possible would be a better solution. The majority of neck, back pain, and even conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome can be directly linked to the position someone works in.

“So how does a Swiss ball help with that?”

This works your core as you fight to stabilise it, though it can be a distraction and many offices won’t allow them. Keeping in a constant motion means that you can’t settle in one position, and it’s settling in one position that tends to bring on a case of RSI

If you can, it’s always worth asking if your office will allow you to use one. You might have to provide it yourself, but they are relatively inexpensive.

“What if my office won’t allow me to use a Swiss ball?”

What you can do is a set of exercises that you can do while seated. There’s plenty of guides online to suitable exercises, from flexing your arms to holding your feet in a pointed position and then relaxing them repeatedly.

“Is that really enough?”

No, but it’s better – anything is better than nothing. The rest of the change has to come at other points in your working day.

“The points when I’m not directly required to be at a desk, you mean?”

Got it in one. So that would be things like walking to work wherever possible; or at least getting off the bus a stop earlier. Or you could use your lunch break to go for a walk if the weather is nice. You can still eat, talk with friends, catch up on social media; you just do it while walking.

“So it’s small changes only, really.”

Yes, unless you can change the entire working culture of your office. The way of life we have developed is what it is, and until that changes on a societal level, you just have to do what you can. Remember: any small effort you make is going some way to combatting the potential issues caused by not moving enough during your workday. Try and fit in gym sessions or just workout at home where you can; the rest of the time, do whatever is possible while at work. It all helps.

ADVANCING YOUR CAREER: 3 IDEAL THINGS TO CONSIDER

Nobody wants to stay still for very long. Some people prefer to stay inside of their comfort zone, but it’s good to be uncomfortable. When you’re uncomfortable, you know that you’re improving and developing. Consider the 3 things below if you want to advance your career:

Can You Speak To Your Boss?

Sometimes, all you need to do is speak to your boss. You could have a chat with them or request a meeting, and put together a good argument as to why they should consider promoting you. Once they know this is what you want, they may be able to give you some pointers as to how you can achieve it.

What Interests/Skills Do You Have?

When advancing your career, it’s a good idea to put your interests and skills to use. How can you make it so that your next step incorporates things you enjoy?

Will You Go Back To School?

By going back to school, you can gain new qualifications and even degrees that can help you to advance your career or change it completely. You’re never too old to do anything, so this is something you should seriously consider. Maybe you could even do a part time course or a night class. This will only be for a short time, and at the end of it, you’ll be able to apply for new careers with your new qualifications. Take a look at the following infographic to see how an MBA can be used in the healthcare field:

5 IDEAL PLACES TO EAT GRILLED MEAT IN LONDON

Said with not a hint of irony, the oldest cooking technique in the world is going through something a moment right now. The primitive, unpredictable and downright delicious cooking of food over wood, charcoal and anything else that smokes is rising and rising in popularity over the capital. With the sun emerging from it’s hibernation, rays stretching like limbs in a post-slumber stretch, it’s time for the nation’s favourite sun-soaked past time to commence.

National Barbeque Week arrives next week as the perfect excuse to light those coals, get some cold ones in the fridge, and get cooking. Alternatively, if you don’t trust your barbequing skills, you could avoid the salmonella, the excess of pattys and lack of salad by choosing one of our IDEAL picks for perfect barbeque food in London.

Temper

With a loosely Mexican theme – the barbequed meat is accompanied by tacos and salsas and you’re encouraged to wash it all down with delicious Mezcal – Temper is the new kid on the block. Naivity, and innocence this place aint. The food is big, bolshy and brave, the booze flows merrily and the punters quaff and scoff with relentless enthusiasm.

Food is sourced with great care and attention and butchered in-house, then cooked over a huge open-fire pit in the middle of the restaurant. Refined this certainly isn’t, but chef Neil Rankin has the experience and know-how to make this one of the hottest new tickets in town.

Smokestak

Smokestak is the closest on our list to the traditional deep-south of the States smokehouse. Head chef David Carter moved to the U.S in 2013 to perfect the art of the grill and the results are for all to see in this just-off Brick Lane BBQ extravaganza.

Beef brisket and rib seem the most popular offerings, and quite rightly, but a pleasing respect given to the charring of veg means this is a welcoming spot for vegetarians too.

The obligatory chili and heat is done with enthusiasm but also restraint here, making Smokestak not only a good barbeque joint, but a damn good culinary experience too.

The Smoking Goat

A favourite of IDEAL, the Smoking Goat is based on a simple, glorious premise – to serve regional Thai food which more often than not, has been smoked and cooked over flames. The main event, after which the restaurant is named, is a stunning piece of work. It’s spicy, salty, smoky and complex, and at £34 for two, it won’t burn a hole in your pocket.

The fun doesn’t stop there though, with a host of other great dishes – the Chiang Mai pork belly cooked over coals is just as good – meaning you always leave full and happy. Throw some great craft beer into the mix, the perfect partner to the food, and you’re onto a winner. One of our favourite places to eat, period.

Berber & Q

As if our list hadn’t clocked up enough air miles, Berber & Q pays homage to the flavours of the Ottoman and North Africa, flavours which lend themselves brilliantly to fire.

This place is as trendy as its Dalston postcode suggests, but the food makes no attempt to woo the hipster crowd. Our sated stomachs are grateful for this. Spice on the warming, comforting side of sweat-inducing suits the cuisine perfectly.

Rok London *As of September 2022, Rok is now sadly closed*

Remain out East for the last restaurant on our list, the Scandi-inspried Rok in Shoreditch. We wouldn’t immediately associate burning embers with Nordic cuisine (an excess of open-faced sandwiches on our recent trip to Copenhagen may be to blame) but the smoked meats and fish, as well as keen attention to fermenting and pickling, certainly resonates with the region. A tasty, refreshing alternative, and one we loved deeply.

6 IDEAL FUSS-FREE SUMMER BEAUTY TIPS

© Giphy

To make the most of your carefree summer days (and nights), try this fuss-free beauty routine that is low on time and big on impact.

Summer is an ideal time to embrace your natural beauty. A healthy, natural glow sans heavy makeup and pretty wind-tousled hair are the hallmark looks of summer. With these tips from the hair removal experts at the maker of Nair™, keep your beauty rituals to a minimum and get ready to enjoy all that summer has to offer.

Protect your Skin

Your skin’s biggest enemy this summer? You guessed it – damaging UV rays. It’s critical to incorporate sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 into your daily beauty routine. And, remember to reapply liberally throughout the day.

Keep it Smooth

It’s bathing suit season again. Frequent hair removal treatments at your salon can add up. For easy at-home hair removal that provides expert results, blogger and lifestyle expert Carmen Ordonez, founder of the blog “Viva Fashion,” recommends using Nair Sprays Away Max Moroccan Argan Oil to stay smooth all summer long. Infused with 100 percent natural Moroccan Argan Oil, the convenient spray allows for a precise, no-touch application for minimal mess and smooth skin that last days longer than shaving.

Manage the Shine

Skip liquid foundation altogether and opt instead for a bronzing powder for a natural, sun-kissed look. Don’t forget to start with clean skin, using oil-free cleansers and moisturizers.

Move over Matte, Hello Gloss

For your lips, forego heavy cream and matte lipsticks in favor of light and fun glosses and balms. A wide range of options let you go nude and natural by day, and add drama with deeper shades and shimmer for night.

Waterproof

Choose waterproof and smudge-proof cosmetics for your eyes to minimize damage and streaking from sweat, humidity or even a refreshing dip in the pool. For a fresh daytime look, stick with pretty neutrals that enhance your natural coloring.

Condition Less

Heat and humidity can wreak havoc on your hair. Want to avoid limp locks? Skip the daily conditioning and switch to a weekly deep conditioner to maintain moisture while still pumping up the volume on your tresses.

IDEAL SUMMER WORKOUT TIPS WITH FITNESS FIRST

Summer Workout from Fitness First: Discover your bikini body with this confidence boosting workout from the experts at Fitness First

With only weeks to go until bikini season,  we have spoken to Fitness First Health & Fitness Expert Paul Cheeseman who has come up with a set of simple but effective tips to help you step onto the beach with confidence.

This 30 minute circuit workout is a great way to combine cardio and weight training together so you can burn fat and tone up at the same time as well as increase endurance and stamina. Combine this with a positive mindset, and you’ll see a real difference on those legs, bums and tums!

Squat Jump

The squat jump will give your leg muscles a workout and get your heart pumping. Stand with your feet roughly shoulder-width apart, then slowly bend your legs  and arms to about 90 degrees at the same time. Once your thighs are parallel to the floor, explode into the air as high as you can go. Land softly and repeat the motion again. Perform eight to 10 repetitions, or 20 to 25 seconds for a timed circuit. Modify the reps or time to suit your fitness level if the workout seems too difficult or not difficult enough.

Push-Ups

The basic push-up is an exercise that will strengthen your triceps, shoulders and chest. Including push-ups in your circuit training routine will help to give a complete body workout. Do eight  to ten push-ups to start, then increase as your level of fitness increases. Perform push-ups for 10 to 20 seconds as part of a timed routine.

Lunges

Lunges will strengthen and tone your thighs and buttocks. You can either step out into a lunge position then return to the start and repeat, or alternate legs in a continuous walking motion across the floor. Lunges can be performed with no added weight or with a dumbbell in each hand for more of a challenge. Start with eight to 10 reps or 20 to 25 seconds and modify the resistance or reps according to your fitness level.

V-Ups

The V-up can be a challenging exercise for people with weaker abdominal muscles. Lie on your back and extend your arms up over your head. Raise your upper and lower body at the same time, keeping your arms and legs straight to form a “V.” Lower yourself slowly and repeat. Aim for eight to 10 repetitions or 20 seconds, but don’t push yourself too hard because the V-up is a difficult exercise.

THE 10 IDEAL HAIR CARE COMMANDMENTS

Save your hair from the damage caused by our hair demons with these 10 hair care commandments

Have you been living in a life of hair sin?  We all have those hair-dehydrating demons including sun overexposure, blowing drying, curling or straightening that we succumb to. However, help is at hand. To save you from doing more evil to your hair, we asked Claire Whitehouse from The Beauty collective for her top 10 hair care rules that everyone should live by. Follow these 10 hair care commandments and you will definitely be on the virtuous path to hair heaven.

1. Thou shall build a hair-tool artillery

There’s just never a hair-tie when you need it and you could have just brought a pack of 100 bobby pins and still struggle to find one. Invest in a great storage case and keep all your hair tools organised and in one place, then you can spend your time on mastering that new-do rather than searching for the tool you need. Use a fashionable, small cosmetic case/purse that fits in your handbag to transport what you need for the day.

2. Thou shall give your hair a break

Wearing tight hairstyles on a regular basis isn’t great for the health of your hair as it creates tension at the root of the hair and scalp. Wearing a hair tie or hairpin in the same spot can also cause breakage to your hair so alternate your hairstyles to give your hair a break.

3. Remember conditioner is your friend

It’s a good idea to leave a little bit of conditioner in your hair when you’ve finished washing, you don’t need to rinse it all out. It will help with a smooth blow dry and will keep ends nourished. Alternatively, try Argania’s Cashmere Hair leave-in conditioner; it really is a hair routine essential for smooth glossy locks and if my hair is feeling particularly dry, their Liquid Gold Hair Oil is an absolute dream!

4. Thou shall seek natural solutions

Use of harsh chemicals isn’t healthy for you or the environment so it’s best to embrace the natural beauty of your hair and avoid/rarely use heavily chemical based products. With this in mind it is important that you have checked the ingredients and know what you’re reading. Most of us have heard its best to seek shampoos that don’t contain sulfates or parabens but there are other ingredients that can sound scary but are in-fact naturally derived and provide real benefits for your hair.

Everyone has their own viewpoints and levels of concern so I try and do my research and source products based on how they fit into my own set of criteria. The Argania range is ethically sourced and packed with essential oils and powerful anti-oxidants.

5. Thou shall not forget the basics

It’s easy with our busy lifestyles to forget even the simplest of hair rules like never picking at spilt ends or never sleeping with your hair wet. Try not to get lazy or absentmindedly forget the basics, those things your mother taught you still apply today.

6. Thou shall not use hot-tools everyday

Yes we all love them but excessive use of our heat styling tools is damaging to hair and can cause some serious dryness and breakage, try and give them a rest every now and then and break the addiction. If your hairs feeling too unruly to leave the house just style in a sleek pulled back pony or messy top knot and distract with accessories.

7. Thou shall master the blow-dry

Before a mortgage or kids and when my hair was young and healthy I used to pay for a once weekly wash and blow-dry. This would, believe it or not, last the entire week without having to wash in-between.  Unfortunately now my hair and lifestyle have both aged that luxury has since been abandoned so I’ve had to master the blow-dry myself and have learnt its all in the prep and tools.

Its not necessary to use the hottest heat on your hairdryer to get the best blow wave, a high speed on a warm setting is as good as hot. Before blow-drying remove as much moisture as you can with a towel (the micro-fibre kind is best) and to reduce frizz don’t scrunch with the towel just squeeze.

8. Trust in the experts

Even if you’ve had a run of good hair days and can nail a DIY blow-dry it’s still important to make a regular appointment with your hairdresser. They will deal with any problems you might be having as well as help to maintain the condition of your hair. Everyone’s ‘regular’ is different so there’s no need to make it a 6 weekly appointment, after getting a great Balayage colour recently I find I only need to visit my lovely hairdresser quarterly now.

9. Thou shall try new stuff

Although it’s important to follow a few hair commandments we can also all benefit from sometimes just throwing our usual hair routine out the window and trying some new things. There are innovations in hair care appearing all the time, some are fads that come and go but others really could be the perfect partner for your hair. Keep up with the latest hair trends so you don’t miss the opportunity to try something that could very well be the answer to your hair prayers.

10. Honour your hair for what it is

I’m not sure we ever come to terms with the hair that we’re given, I always hated my curls and longed for smooth straight hair and my best friend always wished she had the body and fullness of my curls. The most important thing is to not criticise ourselves for the hair we have, accept there’s some hair looks that we can’t achieve or just wont look good and work with what we’ve got!

IDEAL TIPS: HOW TO BEAT THOSE SUMMER BLUES

TOP TIPS: HOW TO BEAT THOSE SUMMER BLUES

Many of us have heard of ‘winter blues’ but did you know that 1/10 of all SAD cases suffer from the condition in the summer, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

This is known as reverse seasonal affective disorder, but just like winter-onset SAD reverse seasonal affective disorder returns every year at about the same time. Winter SAD is linked to a lack of sunlight, but summer SAD is thought to be the reverse – it is suggested that too much sunshine can lead to modulations in melatonin production, leading some of us to feel down.

To help beat the blues, the natural way, Shona Wilkinson, Nutritionist at SuperfoodUK.com the online shopping destination for health & wellbeing shares her top tips:

Eat yourself happy

Look at your diet: By cutting down on sugar and alcohol we can help to balance out yo-yoing moods. Both these substances increase a neurotransmitter called dopamine. Dopamine makes us feel rewarded and pleasurable but this doesn’t last forever and – once levels fall – we can feel lower than we did before. So as tempting as chocolate bars look, especially when we feel low, try to stay away from sugar.

Eat oily fish twice a week, snack on chia seeds or try taking a supplement, as fatty acids are great ‘brain’ food and can help to fight mood swings. Our brain is made up to 18% of Omega-3s, however, we don’t produce them, and so they have to be sources from outside.

Don’t forget about proteins! They are broken down in the body to make amino acids and then used to create neurotransmitters, which are responsible for keeping our mind and mood balanced. Go for: nuts, seeds, meat, fish, bean and lentils, whey protein and eggs.

4 ways to boost your happy hormone

Serotonin, also known, as the ‘happy hormone’ is a chemical produced by our brain and intestines that works as a neurotransmitter, helping us to relay signals from one area of the brain to another. It is mainly responsible for maintaining mood balance and if you are deficient, this can lead to anxiety, low mood or even depression.

Balance your gut flora

Unfortunately, due to our diet, lifestyle and stress levels most of us struggle with an imbalance of gut flora. Try taking high-quality probiotics to restore your intestinal flora and include fermented foods in your daily diet. Think: kefir, pickles, sauerkraut or miso.

Get moving!

Daily exercise is the easiest and the most effective way to increase your serotonin level. However, make sure you chose an activity that you really like and enjoy. If you feel like you are forcing yourself it may not have the right effect. That may be a result of our ancient instincts. Our brain can tell the difference between running because you’re hunting something, and running because it’s hunting you.

Go socialise

Oxytocin is another ‘feel good’ hormone. Released when we bond socially and feel general trust, comfort and love, this hormone is just as powerful as serotonin. Whenever you feel low and need a lift, spend time with your family and friends to mellow down and feel instantly better.

Take magnesium

If you are feeling tired, irritated and struggle to get up every morning, Magnesium is an excellent mineral to take as it plays a major role in the development of serotonin. Magnesium is known as ‘natures tranquiliser’ and is needed to relax our muscles and nerves, helping us to fall into a peaceful sleep; it can also increase energy levels and help us to feel better about ourselves.

10 IDEAL CLEANING TIPS TO GET YOUR HOME SUMMER PARTY READY

The nights are lighter, the days are warmer and everyone’s in the mood to socialise and have fun and what better way than a party? There’s food to prepare, an outfit to choose and most importantly, we need to clean!

Cleaning is probably the most dreaded part of your party preparation. However we’re here to make it simple and easy so you can focus on getting yourself ready for the party. With the help from the cleaning excerpts at Vax, here are 10 tips on how to get your home summer party ready, a checklist if you will.

WASH YOUR WINDOWS

It may be difficult to avoid during this sunny season, but try not to clean your windows on a warm day as they will dry too quickly and probably streak. On sunny days, you can see every mark and smear on your windows so it’s essential you clean them before your party. Plus, if they’re squeaky clean, more light will shine through. A good tip is to use the traditional method of scrunched up newspaper and your preferred glass cleaner for the best shine.

WASH DOWN GARDEN FURNITURE

If the weather is nice, you may want to pop outside and enjoy the warm evening breeze, but you don’t want to do that sitting on furniture layered with moss and dirt. Wash down your garden furniture with hot, soapy water with a splash of bleach in it to get rid of any dirt or stubborn stains. While we’re talking about furniture, here’s how to create the ultimate garden chill-out area – ideal for your summer party.

TIDY UP OUTSIDE

If you want your garden to be instagram ready for your party, this is the perfect time to break out your pressure washer; they’re small but pack a mighty punch and will clear the pathway (literally!) to cleaner, brighter patio and decking.

The guys at Hotsy Equipment Company recommend using a patio wash tool attachment for the quickest clean. If you decide you’ll want to throw some meat on the barbecue to feed your guests, a pressure washer is the perfect solution for giving it that well deserved clean without the effort. Speaking of cleaning tools…

INVEST IN THE RIGHT TOOLS

You want to spend as little time as possible cleaning so we recommend going cordless with your vacuum, as it’s faster and much more convenient. If there’s a few crumbs that need picking up or a last minute dust around, you don’t have to get your vacuum out from the cupboard then unravel the cord, plug it in and so on.

We’re also big fans of steam cleaning here at IDEAL. Steam cleaning is a fun, easy and some say an addictive way to hygienically clean a huge range of surfaces around your home, all with one machine. A multifunctional steam cleaner can be used to clean floors, door handles, upholstery, and you can even use a window attachment for your windows and glass. The uses are unlimited and it means you don’t have to switch between different cloths, sprays, liquids and brushes. They certainly make a fast but effective cleaning option before a party.

DUST YOUR DUST

This seems like an obvious thing to do, but we’ve found an even quicker way than using a duster is to use a lint roller. You can swiftly remove dust from lampshades and furniture by rolling it over dusty objects and fabrics.

CLEAN YOUR KITCHEN BIN

While we doubt anyone will be rooting around in your bin, the kitchen is often a focal area of a party so it’s best to make sure the bin doesn’t pong. The best way to clean it is to take it into the shower and give it a good scrub down with hot soapy water or diluted bleach. This will eliminate any lingering smells and ensure its germ free.

WHAT SMELLS SO GOOD?

Often, when you think of the best elements of summer, it’s the scents of the season that come to mind; freshly cut grass, flowers in bloom, even summer rain showers – and you want your summer party to be associated with the best of the season. Invest in a diffuser or some summer scented candles.

You could also try spraying perfume or rubbing scented oil on a cool lightbulb instead, then when its dried turn the light on and it will emit a lovely fragrance all around your home. However, as the clever guys at WikiHOW warn “avoid getting oil on the base that screws into the light socket. Also avoid putting oil on incandescent or halogen light bulbs because they can get very hot and burn. Your light bulb may have a shorter lifespan as a result”.

SINKS & DRAINS

Sinks and drains can carry more germs than your toilet bowl! Yes you did read that correctly.  Make sure you use a sufficient drain cleaner that will deodorise any smells, and use bleach to disinfect any lingering germs. A sink is a much visited area during a party and you want to make sure it smells and looks clean.

DISINFECT WITH SPONGE

If an accidental wine glass knocks onto the floor the last thing you want is to reveal your dirty sauce-stained sponge to the world. Make sure it’s stain free and if you want to quickly disinfect before the party, pop it in the microwave for a few minutes until steam arises and the germs should be gone.

DON’T FORGET THE HALLWAY

It’s so important to create a good first impression and your hallway is the first glimpse visitors have of your home. So make sure you have a clean doormat for feet and wash your door with hot soapy water. Your hall is a high traffic area, so ensuring the floors are clean and clutter is stored away is also important.

Now it’s time to sit back, relax and enjoy your summer party! But before you know it the fun is over and you’ll need to prepare for a post party clean up. We know it’s horrible thinking about cleaning the day after a party, but it has to be done.

Don’t forget to clean sticky surfaces, put bags full of rubbish in the skip and tackle any stains. If the worst should happen and someone spills wine on your carpet, first pat it gently with kitchen roll (don’t rub) to absorb as much of the liquid as possible and then use an extraction carpet cleaner for best results.

After more cleaning tips? Here’s how to remove the top 10 summer stains, including ketchup, wine, grass and more.
