RESTAURANT REVIEW OF BLACKHOUSE: THE GRILL ON THE MARKET, SMITHFIELD – THE IDEAL PLACE FOR CARNIVORES

RESTAURANT REVIEW OF BLACKHOUSE: THE GRILL ON THE MARKET

Writ large and with clarity on the wall of The Grill on The Market is “Solid & honest. Simply proper food”.

With a summary of such brevity and precision, there seems little point in writing a full review. The restaurant themselves have managed it in 5 words and an ampersand. Without doubt, this place is all about the meat, the quality of the sourcing and cooking with respect the ingredients deserve. In many ways, no more need be said. However…

IDEA

A no nonsense approach to meat, and beef specifically, leads the press release to bill The Blackhouse as a ‘homage to the beautiful bovine’. True to their prose, this is precisely where the restaurant shines. Beef is the front-page feature and cooked with eloquence.

LOCATION

Overlooking Smithfield meat traders, the market looms up outside the window, peering in (the pathetic fallacy is not lost on us) as a reminder of the origins of your dinner.  Interestingly, where the restaurant now sits was once the site of the original market butchery in the 10th century, and they don’t let you forget it.

ATMOSPHERE

Although the area felt fairly deserted at night – the market is early business and even the pubs open at 6am – the restaurant itself was heaving.

The place is buzzy. Seriously buzzy. When we arrive, at 8, it’s full to the brim, and we’re informed that it’s just the same at lunchtime. They must be doing something right, and the validation of chatter and laughter indicates good times are ahead.

The clientele is mix of office workers, downing tools and pints after a long day, and the now obligatory, tattooed and bearded, hipsters. It wouldn’t be East London without both.

Admirable in synergetic terms, the decor is also meaty. Seats of ox-blood red; thick wood tables like chopping blocks; chill cabinets showing off cuts of meat…they’ve really gone all out to proverbially whet the appetite through interior design.

A ubiquitous, lengthy zinc top bar and bare brick walls once again reminds us of our proximity to Shoreditch, though a pianist incongruously playing Leonard Cohen is a welcome change from Grimes and grime.

RESTAURANT REVIEW OF BLACKHOUSE: THE GRILL ON THE MARKET

FOOD

Straight up we are asked if we’d like to “try the Big Boy”. I briefly wonder if all the objectified, hanging meat is a euphemism and we’ve walked into somewhere far less salubrious than a restaurant.

On further enquiry it emerged that this is a 1kg steak. We pass on this, eager to try a greater variety of offerings. The Butchers Block selection is appealing, picked out from the chill cabinet at your discretion and cut off at table as a bit of theatre. Staying on menu, the aged Galician cow, notable for its deep, pungent taste, delivers everything it should.

RESTAURANT REVIEW OF BLACKHOUSE: THE GRILL ON THE MARKET

Light starters seem a necessity in anticipation of the main event, with a crab & avocado salad clean and tasty, heightened by piques of fresh lime.  A beetroot and goat’s cheese tart is excellent; a fail safe combination enhanced by delicate pastry. I briefly wonder if this starter would work with the headlining act.

For those not on a cattle crusade, the menu has fish and vegetarian options, which looked well-thought out. Desserts continue this theme, seeming far more than just an afterthought. Whilst difficult to shoehorn beef into the sweets section, there is still intrigue in the afters. A coconut Bakewell tart with salted caramel is a fine balancing act, opposing factions counteracting one another assertively but from a place of peace. A cheese board served with Eccles cake looked interesting and English – a definite for those who have not yet had their savoury sated.

DRINK

There is a capable wine list, reasonably priced from £19 to £75. In London, a bottle for 19 is superb value. We decide to honour the Galician beef (actually from England but Galician cattle) with a Bierzo wine (also from North West Spain). It elegantly complements the depth of the meat.

A varied cocktail list is also very welcome indeed – we recommend trying their Smokey Old Fashioned. A lack of craft beers is surprising – we couldn’t imagine anything suiting the vibe more perfectly.

MUST TRY

Without doubt, the aged Galician cow will have us coming back for more – it took to the bull ring, went mano a mano with a regular steak and won, hooves down. An old trope oft milked, but this was truly melt in the mouth. Utterly exquisite.

RESTAURANT REVIEW OF BLACKHOUSE: THE GRILL ON THE MARKET

WHY GO

Go with a group of (meat loving) friends after work  Although not sharing plates in the traditional sense, this is a great place for conviviality and good vibes and no-one is going to take down the Big Boy alone.  The food more than matches the atmosphere, and the drinks are both reasonable and of high quality. All in all, Blackhouse is a real winner in our book.

SALMON & SEA BASS CEVICHE – IDEAL FOR A TASTY AND TANGY TREAT

SALMON & SEA BASS CEVICHE 1

A tangy and tasty recipe for Salmon & Sea Bass Ceviche, brought to you by Manomasa Tortilla Chips

A great fresh tasting summery canapé tossed with a citrus, coriander and chilli dressing, delicious served on crisp spicy tortillas. Simply spoon the shredded lettuce and ceviche on to 4 serving plates with the tortillas on the side.

Preparation: 25 minutes

Chill: 1 hour

Serves 4-6

Ingredients

200g (7oz) or 2 sea bass fillets, skinned, pin boned and diced

300g (2oz) or 2 trout fillets, skinned, pin boned and diced

2 limes, grated rind and juice

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 red grapefruit

1 red chilli, halved, deseeded, finely chopped

1 small red onion, halved, thinly sliced

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

4 tablespoons fresh chopped coriander leaves

160g pack of Manomasa Chipotle and Lime Tortilla Chips

2 little gem lettuces, finely shredded

Method

  • Add the diced sea bass and trout to a shallow china or glass dish. Sprinkle with the lime rind then drizzle over the lime juice and oil.
  • Cut a slice off the top and bottom of each grapefruit then cut the rest of the peel and pith away with a small serrated knife. Cut between the membrane to release the segments then squeeze the juice from the membrane over the fish. Roughly chop the segments then add to the fish with the  chilli and onion. Season with salt and pepper and gently stir together.
  • Cover with clingfilm and chill in the fridge for about 1 hour or until the sea bass is bright white and the trout an opaque pink or it looks ‘cooked’.
  • Sprinkle the chopped coriander over the ceviche and stir together gently. Allow to come to room temperature for 15-20 minutes.
  • Arrange the tortillas on a large platter, sprinkle a little lettuce on the top of each then spoon over the ceviche. Serve immediately or the tortilla chips will soften, with extra lime wedges and a little coarse sea salt if liked.

Cook’s Tip

As the fish is pickled with the lime juice rather than cooked, make sure to buy the freshest fish that you can and to make and eat this dish on the day that you buy the fish.

The use of Manomasa’s adventurous flavours including Chipotle and LimeWhite Cheddar & the brand new Tomatillo Salsa are ideal for making quick and easy canapés, and are destined to show off the host’s culinary skills this summer.  Manomasa is available from Ocado (RRP: £1.99 per 160g pack).

how to spend 24 hours in Edinburgh's west end

Just a few minutes’ walk from Princes Street, you’ll find the cobbled Georgian streets of the West End. With charming architecture, colourful shop fronts and a laid-back bohemian vibe, this area is one of Edinburgh’s best kept secrets – that is until now.

From Boutique shops to fabulous delicatessens, art galleries, trendy wine bars and unique dining experiences that naturally come with a Scottish twist, the West End has it all. Here’s our guide on how to spend 24 hours in Edinburgh’s West End.

10pm-9am Haymarket Hub

Stay overnight at the new Haymarket Hub. This place is brilliantly located for trips to Edinburgh as it’s opposite the train station and on the tram and bus route from the airport. Also, it’s the first hotel in Scotland to have ‘Handy’ phones which help you to keep in touch and navigate your way around the city – perfect if you’re prone to getting lost like us!

9am-10am The Westroom

Bright and airy, breakfast at The Westroom will be the perfect start to your day. The food here doesn’t disappoint and the kitchen serves up brilliant brunches at the weekend. There is something for everyone and every appetite at The Westroom. Think modern classics like avo and eggs on toasted sourdough to the full Scottish breakfast which of course includes haggis. If you like starting the day with something sweet try the eggy bread, served with rashers of bacon and lashing of maple syrup, it’s absolutely delicious. They do a blooming lovely spicy Bloody Mary too. If you can’t get a table at The Westroom, we’re also huge fans of the breakfasts at Milk and Loudons

10am-12am The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art

A twenty minute walk from The Westroom, passing some of Edinburgh’s most spectacular architecture and over the Water of Leith, takes you to two impressive galleries that make up the National Gallery of Modern Art. Here you can see works by Dali, Picasso, Warhol and Bacon. The walk to this museum and the exhibitions on offer will definitely satisfy the culture vulture within.

12.00pm-1.30pm Exploring the West End’s boutiques

Cobbled Georgian William Street is home to some of Edinburgh’s best boutiques and independent shops including Odyssey Boutique. Named as one of the UK’s Most Stylish Boutiques by Stylist Online, this lingerie and swimwear store is a must visit for fashionistas. THE IDEAL GUIDE TO THE GROWTH OF THE POP-UP AND STREET FOOD INDUSTRY

Supper clubs, pop-up restaurants and street food stalls have taken the industry by storm. We’ve got the proof to back that statement up. Eventbrite found that the number of food and drink events hosted on its platform is increasing each year, and most of these are pop-ups with a whopping 82 per cent growth.

There’s so many reasons why people in the food industry have chosen to steer away from brick and mortar establishments, with the help of one UK’s leading LPG suppliers, Flogas, we explore why.

Minimal Investment

The low-cost of opening up a pop-up/streetfood business is attractive, so more people are doing it. The cost of opening a traditional restaurant can easily be over £300,000, However, if you open up a pop-up, you don’t need a particularly large investment to get your business off the ground. According to the hub, a small second hand catering trailer or market stall could be acquired for under £5,000. Also a report by the Nationwide Caterers Association acknowledges that a fully equipped market stall can be bought for around £3,000 and a food truck for an estimated £10,000.

People Are Willing to Pay More

To shed light on just how popular pop-up events have become, Eventbrite conducted a survey involving more than 2,000 people who had headed along to such dining experiences in the past. The survey found most people belief that it’s OK to pay more money for receiving a unique dining experience. Around half of respondents also said that they would be happy to pay more for a meal from the exact same menu at a pop-up event where chef interaction is involved, as opposed to one served in a regular restaurant.

A Chance to Be You

The pop-up model provides an ideal way for chefs to be creative, experiment and be themselves. Pop-up creator Melissa King says “There are so many chefs out there — they have their restaurants, their day jobs, but they’re looking for something more. That’s what the pop-up culture offers them. They are able to take over someone’s space for only a few hours and convert it into their own identity. It’s not just about the food, it’s about creating a memorable experience for the guests.”

People Value Unique Experiences

People are attracted to things that are perceived as underground or exclusive. According to Eventbrite, 84 per cent of those going to a pop-up want a unique theme or menu. This was followed by events held at memorable location (76 per cent) and occasions that promised to be a one-of-a-kind experience (74 per cent).

6 IDEAL WAYS TO USE FASHION TO INCREASE BODY CONFIDENCE

You can spot a confident woman from a mile away – she’ll be carrying herself a certain way and looking comfortable in her own skin. While it is true that confidence about your body and all its flaws can only come from within, there is one thing which can instantly boost your self-image – fashion.

Have you ever wondered why your favourite jacket or well-loved pair of heels can make you feel sexy, happy and confident, while slipping into out-of-style clothes or fashion pieces can increase your self-doubt? This is because certain accessories and clothes have the power to instantly make you feel more comfortable in your skin, thereby increasing your body confidence and uplifting your mood.

While it is important to change our mind-set and stop viewing our imperfections and flaws as something to be ashamed of, there are certain tips and techniques you can adopt to appear more confident instantly. The first tip involves adding certain fashion items and accessories to your wardrobe.

Here is a list of 6 fashion pieces you can use to increase your body confidence.

A go-to dress

A go-to dress does not necessarily mean a fancy ball gown – this could be anything from a simple dress-shirt to a summer dress that makes you feel good about yourself. The right type of dress for your body shape can make you look smart and elegant, while flattering your body shape and hiding that bit of extra fat. When you look good, you will also automatically feel good about yourself. The best part of having a go-to dress is that you can pair it with trendy or formal accessories depending on the occasion and repeat it as many times as you want. Just remember to choose a classic silhouette which can be easily paired with different items.

Comfortable yet sexy heels

Wearing heels can give us an instant boost and make us appear taller and more confident. For shorter women, heels can be a blessing– they can make their legs appear longer and more toned while taller women can look classy and elegant. However, make sure that your heels are comfortable as you might have to wear them for hours. Uncomfortable heels can cause painful welts or blisters and make your feet hurt.

Tights

We’ve already spoken about how lingerie can make you feel more confident here. Similarly, tights are sexy and can instantly boost your confidence and make you feel more feminine. While these fashion items cannot be worn to the office, at least without inciting a few riots, you can wear them for a romantic evening at home or when going out. There is just something innately sexy and appealing about wearing open crotch tights that can make you feel confident about yourself and your body.

sunglasses

A pair of classy sunglasses which suit the shape of your face can instantly make you appear more trendy and fashionable. Every woman should own at least one pair of statement sun glasses as these can make you appear sexy and confident.

Good fitting denims

From high waisted to low waisted denims, you simply cannot go wrong with jeans. There are so many different cuts that you are sure to find one that not only flatters your figure, but is also comfortable to wear. A good pair of jeans can be paired with formal blouses or t-shirts. These tend to make the most out of your curves and give your butt an extra lift. This can make you feel good about yourself and confident about your appearance.

Structured blazers

Structured blazers with clean lines can be paired with any outfit and can significantly uplift your look. These can be paired with dresses or denims depending on the occasion and can elevate your style, making you appear instantly trendy and fashionable. Pair it with a white silky blouse for an elegant and formal look or throw a jacket over your printed t-shirt. What’s more, these can also hide tummy folds or arm fat successfully while making you look taller and more confident.

While there are numerous other fashion pieces which can make you look sexy, feminine and classy, these 6 fashion items are guaranteed to boost your confidence and body image. If you are unsure of suitable cuts and styles, you can always speak to a stylist or visit reputable sellers for your next purchase. Just remember – when you look good, you will also automatically feel good about yourself.

GIVE YOUR FEET A TREAT WITH THESE 5 IDEAL TIPS

Are you always battling blisters and pushing through foot pain? Yep, sometimes we take our feet for granted, dashing to the train, to work, to the gym without giving our comfort a second thought, and after a long day on the go, it isn’t until we sit down at night that we truly feel the damage we’ve done, and the blisters really kick in.

If you’re longing for relief, then know that three-quarters of people experience foot pain, so you’re definitely not alone. And this might reassure you even more; you don’t actually need a fancy spa or pedicure to get your feet feeling like a million dollars again. Instead, try this; here’s how to give your feet a treat with these 5 IDEAL tips.

GIVE THEM A PROPER WASH

Merely standing in the shower and letting the bubbles seep over your toes isn’t enough. Bend down and give your feet a good scrub regularly with soap or body wash. Clean out all the dirt underneath your nails and make sure you scrub well on your heels and between your toes. When you’re done, dry your feet thoroughly, and don’t change into socks, stockings or slippers if they’re still wet. A damp, hot place is the perfect environment for things like athletes foot, fungal infections, and plain old stinky feet, too. Avoid it!

TREAT YOURSELF TO A FOOT MASSAGE

If you’ve been on your feet all day, then a short foot massage can work wonders to relieve tension and make your tootsies feel brand new. From reducing anxiety to lowering blood pressure and improving circulation, there are many proven benefits of giving yourself (or better yet, receiving) a foot massage.

Equally effective, it is important to apply stretching into your daily routine if you have sore feet, as this can help ease tension and pain. Try toe curls, a toe stretch, or a tennis ball stretch; here you place a tennis ball between your fall and the floor and gently roll it back and forth, pressing down gently. This is particularly helpful as it combines the relief of a massage with the benefits of stretching.

WEAR SHOES THAT FIT

A half-size can be all the difference between the perfect fit and a heel full of blisters. Avoid rushing through your shoe shopping, especially if it’s footwear that you have to wear daily. If you’ve got wider feet, then don’t squeeze them into narrow flats or heels that will pinch your toes or too-long shoes that could cause you to trip. It goes without saying that cheap, poorly-made shoes can cause a lot of damage, so purchase good-quality, sturdy shoes, especially for everyday wear.

Consider a retailer like widefitshoes.co.uk that specialises in quality shoes for wide or flat feet that will support your arches, steady your heel and fit snugly around your toes without any pinching and rubbing. You’ll also find it easier to stand comfortably longer with these shoes if you are someone who has a very active lifestyle or job where you can hardly find the time to sit down.

ALTERNATE YOUR FOOTWEAR

Wearing the same shoes every day means you’re not giving them time to air out, and the constant use can trigger foot odour or nasty infections. If you’ve got particularly sweaty feet, then use footlets or stocking socks inside your ballet flats, so they don’t slip around and soak up your sweat. It also means your shoes won’t break down as quickly, and if you do have a blister-popping pair you just can’t bear to part with, you’ll give your feet time to recover.

GO EASY ON THE HEELS

High heels are fun, but everyday use can damage a woman’s feet. A pair of six-inch stilettos will wreak havoc on your posture, toes and cause tendon problems, so if you’re an addict for heels, then try to find shoes with a wider heel that gives you support (you should never feel like you’re teetering) that are no more than two inches in height. After a night in heels, give yourself time to put your feet up – numb toes mean the constant compression has affected your blood flow, so give your toes a rub and soak in warm water to get the blood pumping normally again.

WHAT TO WEAR: IDEAL DANCEWEAR STYLES FOR SUMMER

Want to know the hottest dancewear styles for summer? Look no further

Starting to think about what you want to wear during your summer dance classes?  It’s time to put your winter dancewear to rest and check out the latest spring and summer styles for this dance season.

Whether you’re searching for a new sparkling jazz ensemble or a flowy lyrical dress, there’s a wide range of new looks to try out this summer. With this is mind, we’ve put together a guide on the hottest summer dancewear styles.

Capri Tights

If you’re a lyrical dancer who wears footed tights, you’ll know how hot and impractical they can be in the summer months. So if you’re looking for another option, you can always go with capri tights – they look like bicycle shorts – that you’d wear over a leotard.

Colourful Leotards

The summer months mean fun colours that put an extra spring in your step. Colourful leotards are perfect for the warmer months and not just because they look good. Wearing bright colours can make you feel more confident and every dancer needs confidence. Also a bold colour might help you stand out in auditions –  a great addition to your summer dance wardrobe don’t you think?

When choosing your colourful leotard, bear in mind that in the summer, most ballet and lyrical dancers opt for short sleeve leotards made from sweat-wicking fabrics. According to Just for Kix, a website featuring girls dancewear, “Buying the right dancewear leotards can be tricky. But considering that you wear these in most dance classes, it’s essential you find good fitting ones. It’s important to make sure the ones you purchase provide enough support, especially in the bust area, for comfort and movement.”

Light and Flowy

Light and flowy dancewear is not only pratical for summer, it can also reflect the particular style of your dance. For example if you’re a lyrical dancer looking to portray the emotion and the spirit of the dance, you should look for fluid designs full of movement to accentuate your shapes and steps.

Camisoles

This one is for jazz dancers. If you’re looking for something trendy, pair jazz pants with a camisole. Perfect for sticky summer days, camisoles are cool and light. Wearing one will also help make your movements more flexible and comfortable. If you want to make a statement, you can get really ostentatious with galaxy leggings and an edgy graphic camisole.

Crop Tops

As temperatures rise you’ll see crop tops in nearly all of your dance lessons. Dancewear crop tops are great in summer because they are supportive and allow your skin to breathe. If you’re a jazz dancer looking for something on the flashier side, you could always choose a fringe asymmetrical or a sequined crop top to go with your leggings.

Harem Pants

As far as hip-hop dance summer styles go, you can bet your bottom dollar that the overall dress code is always going to be casual. This dance style requires looser bottoms and tops since they are more or less the norm. Light and comfortable, harem pants are an ever-popular dancewear item and are seriously stylish for summer.

It’s never been easier to discover the hottest dancewear styles. Use these guidelines to help you or your daughter find the perfect warm weather style this year no matter what type of dance she loves.

SUMMER WARDROBE ESSENTIAL: THE MAXI DRESS

Summer is nearly here! To make the most of it, we should grab it with both hands and embrace this season’s style. When the weather is sizzling, it’s tradition to choose sorter hemlines to keep ourselves cool and on-trend, with shorts, miniskirts and mini dresses. With the help of House of Fraser, we are here to give you an alternative that’s cool, easy to wear and just as stylish!

Maxi dresses are still having their time in the spotlight and this year there’s more to choose from than ever before. There’s something for every summer occasion and we think it’s time every woman embraces the maxi dress for summer days, evenings and formal occasions.

Day

Wearing a maxi dress during the day can vary from casual cool for fun days out to daytime glam that can transition to night.

For the beach or a summer day in the park, try a simple, plain-coloured or striped sleeveless maxi dress. Team it with some casual sandals or trainers and a big bag to keep everything in. This way, you’ll not feel too overdressed but ready to tackle any activity that comes your way

Alternatively, for a glamourous day look, why not try a cold shoulder or maxi dress? The cold shoulder cut outs will dress up the standard day look, without leaving you feeling too exposed.

Night

Wearing a maxi dress when you go on a night out certainly doesn’t leave you feeling covered up or frumpy. A bodycon maxi dress will help to flatter your shape and make you feel dressed for a night on the tiles, while remaining fashion-forward at all times.

For a slightly more alternative look, why not try a dress with some sheer panelling or overlay and let new textures add an interesting element?

Formal occasions

Weddings, christenings and family parties always pose a challenge when you’re looking for something to wear – but not when you consider wearing a maxi dress.

Maxi dresses with longer sleeves help you keep covered if the wedding venue requires you to do so and, with a little embellishment, can be just as show-stopping as something shorter.

Sleeveless ruched dresses can also look stunning, with the ruching enhancing the flow of the dress. Team with pointed flats or killer heels and the fascinator of your choice and you’re good to go!

22 INTERESTING FACTS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT SLEEP

Most of what we know about sleep has only been discovered in the past 25 years, but it’s fair to say we’ve made up for it. Scientists and researchers all over the globe are learning more and more about sleep every day (and night), teaching us things we never even dreamed about this process. (Excuse the pun).

The Sleep Matters Club powered by Dreams have put together this amazing list of 22 of the most interesting and surprising facts about sleep that you may not know.

12% of people dream entirely in black and white

Before colour television was introduced, only 15% of people dreamt in colour whilst older people dream in black and white more often than younger people. It’s all here in this study.

Two thirds of a cat’s life is spent asleep

This will come as no surprise to most cat owners. Usually found on your favourite seat or computer keyboard. But that’s nothing compared to snails. Here’s a couple of extra funny facts; a snail can sleep for three years straight, and on the other end of the spectrum, a giraffe needs less than two hour’s sleep a night!

A giraffe only needs 1.9 hours of sleep a day, whereas a brown bat needs 19.9 hours a day

See the amount of sleep other animals need here, including ferrets, cheetahs and three-toed sloths.

Humans spend 1/3 of their life sleeping

This obviously differs depending on the age of the human, but on average it’s around a third, which is quite a lot when you think about it.

The record for the longest period without sleep is 11 days

This was set by a Californian student named Randy Gardner in 1964. This is definitely not recommended, however, as Randy experienced extreme sleep deprivation and others have died staying awake for this long.

It’s not uncommon for deaf people to use sign language in their sleep

There are many instances where people have reported their deaf partners or children using sign language in their sleep.

Dysania is the state of finding it hard to get out of bed in the morning

We’ve all no doubt found it tricky getting out of bed every now and again, but those suffering from Dysania find it particularly difficult. It is most likely to be a form of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Parasomnia is a term that refers to unnatural movements during your sleep

Some people have even committed crime due to parasomnia, including sleep driving and even murder.

The sensation of falling when half asleep and jerking yourself awake is called ‘hypnic jerks’

No-one is totally sure why hypnic jerks occur but they are deemed to be perfectly healthy. However, they may be increased by anxiety, caffeine or physical activity close to bedtime. They are more frequent in young people and decrease as we get older.

It’s thought that up to 15% of the population are sleepwalkers

This is according to the National Sleep Foundation. It’s also a myth that you shouldn’t wake someone who is sleepwalking.

1 in 4 married couples sleep in separate beds

Dr Sarah Brewer told us why this might actually be a good thing.

Sleep deprivation will kill you more quickly than food deprivation

Neither are good for you, obviously, but this article claims that sleep is actually more important than food in the short term.

Those born blind experience dreams involving things such as emotion, sound and smell rather than sight

This is a topic that is really quite interesting and the timing of the blindness in a person’s life may impact what that person dreams about. There’s plenty more on this here.

Within 5 minutes of waking up, 50% of your dream is forgotten

After an additional 5 minutes, 90% of recollection is gone. Sigmund Freud believed this was because dreams represent our repressed thoughts and so our brain wants to get rid of them quickly. However, it’s much more likely due to our brains simply being used much more as soon as we’re awake and so we forget much of what we’ve dreamed about.

Pain tolerance is reduced by sleep deprivation

This study suggests that cutting a person’s sleep in half dramatically reduces pain threshold although it’s not 100% clear why.

41% of the British population sleep in the foetal position

This is from research done by Professor Chris Idzikowski, director of the Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service, though 5 other sleeping positions have been identified: the log, yearner, starfish, soldier and free faller.

Sleep experts have discovered a direct link between people’s favourite sleeping positions and their personalities

This is also according to Professor Idzikowski, suggesting that those who sleep in the foetal position “may appear tough but are actually sensitive souls right to their core.” See what the Professor says about the other sleep positions.

Ideally, falling asleep at night should take you 10-15 minutes

If it takes you less than five minutes, chances are you are sleep deprived.

Humans are the only mammals that willingly delay sleep

How nice it must be to just be able to go to sleep whenever and wherever you are!

Sleeping on your front can aid digestion

Hands should apparently be positioned above the pillow so you’re in a ‘freefall’ position, whilst laying on your left side can apparently help reduce heartburn.

High earners (£65 – £75,000) get the best sleep

This comes from a report by The Sleep Council. I would certainly sleep better if I earned that much money!

Fear is said not to be the main emotion in nightmares

Instead, researchers have found that it’s most often feelings of sadness, guilt and confusion.

Shanklin is one of the Isle of Wight’s most famous seaside resorts.  It’s a charming place with a traditional seafront promenade vibe – Think Punch and Judy and buckets and spades. The promenade is bustling with amusements including traditional arcade games and bowling. If you’re feeling peckish several cafés and kiosks serve up the usual seaside fare like fish and chips, hotdogs and ice cream. Also, Shanklin’s sandy beach makes it perfect for a spot of swimming and there are a range of beach huts and deckchairs to hire for those who want to take their time with the spectacular views.

P.S New to the Shanklin seafront is the Pirates Cove, a mini theme park that will keep the whole family entertained for hours.

Isle of Wight Festival of the Sea (23rd June – 9th July 2017)

For nine exciting days the Isle of Wight Festival of the Seas takes over the island with an array of sea-related activities held to promote the Island’s seafaring history. There is something for all the family including beach art displays, pirate themed events and scenic cycle rides.

A plethora of cookery displays and food-tasting stands situated throughout the island are sure to fill you up, but if you want to get out on the open sea why not try your hand at sailing a yacht, doing a spot of surfing and wind surfing or even test out your kayaking skills.

Beachside Restaurants

5 IDEAL THINGS TO DO ON THE ISLE OF WIGHT THIS SUMMER

If you’re a foodie who loves fish, the Isle of Wight is the ideal destination for you. Some of the best sea fishing in the UK can be enjoyed off the Isle of Wight which means some of the freshest fish eating can be done here too. We recommend:

The Crab Shed, Steephill For a delicious lunch overlooking the sea, this is the place to come. The Crab Shed is famous for its crab pasties and mackerel ciabattas and they also serve up a selection of wines to complement their seafood dishes. Any crab, lobster and mackerel you see on the menu is caught in the sea, right in front of the restaurant – you can’t get fresher than that.

The Hut, Colwell Bay, Freshwater – With a perfect position right on the beachfront, The Hut is a great spot for seaside dining. This is a busy and buzzy place which is popular for evening drinks followed by a candlelit dinner on the deck. Don’t come here expecting your average British fish supper as the menu takes inspiration from all over the world. Think Indonesian Fish Curry, Fish Tacos and Gambas Pil Pil.

Other great restaurants include: Baywatch on the Beach which is known for it’s lobster, plaice and mussel dishes. The Priory Bay Oyster Bar & Grill is also popular, here you can eat barbecued fish in a shack in the woods.
