How To Capture The Perfect Festive Family Portrait Photo

With the Christmas countdown officially started, now is the time when thoughts turn to the ever-important family Christmas Card and how to capture that perfect photo.

Family photos are a creative alternative to Christmas cards and an opportunity to share a wonderful family picture with loved ones, near and far. It’s the perfect time to capture the magic of childhood and family life, with a festive backdrop, of course – and with the right planning and setting it can be a lot of fun for everyone.

That said, setting up and taking a family portrait can be difficult, depending mainly on the ages of any children involved, so with some suggestions from photography expert Sadia Barlow Photography, here’s how capture the perfect, festive family portrait and make the photo session as easy and relaxed as possible.

Get An Early Night

The last thing you want is bleary, puffy eyes in your family photo. “Are you okay? You look so tired” is not the response you want when people receive your Christmas card.

Alongside dehydration and eating too much salty food, not getting enough sleep can cause facial puffiness, especially around the eyes so make sure you get a good rest.

Sadia says “make sure the whole family is well rested and have full tummies from breakfast or lunch. Hungry and tired children, and indeed adults, can be a recipe for playing up so a full stomach and rested mind is highly advisable”.

A good night’s sleep and a good feed will hopefully keep everyone in a holly, jolly mood.

Choose Your Clothing Carefully

The best results come when everyone is co-ordinated, whether its soft pastel colours and gentle textures, or bright vivid block colours.

So how to you choose? Well, Sadia explains; “You know your family best, so decide on the colours which best suit your family and dress accordingly”.

If you’re not sure where to start, we consider getting your family to wear slightly different shades of the same colour. Try to avoid everyone doing too “matchy matchy,” as wearing matching outfits will draw the eye to your clothes instead of your lovely faces, that is unless you’ve decided to go for matching Christmas pyjamas.

Think About The Timing

Sadia highlights that “young children may have a nap incorporated into their daily routine”. So be sure to think about this when you take your photo. The last thing you want is a grumpy looking child, or an asleep one for that matter.

If the photo shoot is outdoors, then light will also impact on the timing. The best source of lighting is, of course, the sun. But make sure not to shoot under bright lighting – this may result in unwanted shadows on your family’s face.

If you’re shooting indoors and cannot use the natural light, consider purchasing an off-camera flash which essential when you don’t have enough natural light or sunlight doesn’t come from the right direction. It helps redistribute the light and will highlight your family’s best features.

As you plan the perfect moment to take your photo, consider capturing a short video of your family interacting. You can easily turn this video to flipbook, creating a charming keepsake to treasure alongside your family portrait.

Don’t Worry About Posing

If you’re getting your holiday photo shot professionally, Sadia tells us that “the best quality family shots come from organic interactions and movement. As professional photographers, we prompt the family to some extent but often, we get the best results when families are allowed to group together in a natural, more dynamic way, and leave us to choose the best moment to hit that shutter button”.

We couldn’t agree more.

Grab Those Christmas Props

Finally, Sadia offers some wise words of encouragement;”For a more festive feel, add a Santa hat, some mistletoe, or wrap up some empty boxes in festive paper and have the children hold Christmas props. These can also be a great distraction for young children and sometimes generates the most relaxed, happy photos. Be creative, don’t over think it and just have fun!”

And with the perfect family portrait taken, it’s time to turn your attention to the all-important festive feast. Here, some of our favourite chefs share their top tips on how to pull off Christmas lunch like a pro. Do check it out, and we can’t wait to see your photos!

Professional Guide: The Art Of Blending Weft Hair Extensions

As a professional hairdresser or salon owner, you already know just how important it is to master the art of blending weft hair extensions with the client’s natural hair. Doing so helps the final result looks as full, healthy and natural as possible… And there’s not much more important than that in your business, hey?

Today, we’ve teamed up with the experts at HairMadeEasi to go through the most important steps required to ensure best practice at your salon. With that in mind, here’s a professional’s guide to the art of blending weft hair extensions.

Ensure The Hair Extensions You’re Working With Are Thick

Working with properly thick weft hair extensions is ideal to achieve that flawlessly natural look. Generally speaking, the more hair the extensions have, the better the blending process will be, helping you achieve the most attractive end result for your client, and them to leave your salon satisfied with both your service and their new look.

Regardless of your customer’s natural hair type – thin or thick – their hair size is what you need to take into consideration. Natural short hair will need more hair in the extensions for complete coverage.

Always Style The Client’s Hair Extensions

When it comes to curling hair extensions, the process is not any different from curling natural hair. The majority of professional hairdressers choose to use curling irons for a wavy look.

Are you one of them? If not, all you need to do to get started is use a wand with a one inch diameter barrel. Remember to always apply heat protectants to the clients’ hair, and do check out this guide on the best shampoos for tape-in hair extensions, too.

Make Sure You Layer The Hair Extensions Really Well

Since you’re a hair expert with years of experience, you’re aware that layering the hair extensions efficiently is key. You can’t get away with doing it wrong or not well enough. Otherwise, your client won’t return to your salon.

Distribute the clip-ins equally, tease your client’s hair around the parting, and add clip-ins to the top. This will help hide the customer’s natural hair really well. Disperse the clip-ins uniformly, add clip-ins near the top, and tease toward the hair parting.

And if you don’t boast years of experience but still want to achieve that salon-worthy hair at home, then click here for a guide on doing just that.

Make The Hair As Smooth As Possible

Smoothing out your customer’s hair before starting the blending process is crucial, and not doing this for the client will risk their hair getting severely damaged. All is not lost; you can use a hair serum to mix those resistant strands into the lengthy locks that will make them smooth.

Never apply products close to your customer’s roots, as that will ruin their look by making their hair look oily, which is never something a client is actively seeking!

Is smoothing your clients’ hair before blending something you spend enough time on? You don’t want to risk not using enough product and doing damage to the customer’s hair – that would rather defeat the point of them seeking haircare from a professional, after all.

Additional Tips

Here are some further tricks to help you offer your clients the best experience possible, as well as the most beautiful end result.

  • Wash the hair extensions thoroughly before applying them.
  • Grab your customer’s lowest hair area and make a braid.
  • Clip the wefts higher on the client’s head.

Are you already doing all this in order to help your clients have the best experience at your salon? There’s always room for growth and improvement, especially in your industry.

What You Should Know About Pigeon Proofing Solar Panels

If you are using solar energy, you may well have come across birds nesting below the solar panels. This is because the space left between the panels and the roof offers a dry and sheltered environment for the birds, which, on the face of it, is all well and good.

However, once the birds pitch up beneath the solar panels and set up camp, they can cause a lot of undesirable issues, with the materials used to build their nests potentially clogging roof ridges, the twigs constantly scratching the transmission cables and exposing them, and inquisitive birds – and sometimes other pests, too – generally posing a risk to the the structural integrity of your panels.

Once the wires are exposed, fire hazards can easily start. But that’s not all; bird droppings are acidic and they not only affect the efficiency of the solar power system but may also corrode your roof. Birds chirping can be a noise disturbance, too, particularly in the morning.

All in all, it’s a problem worth confronting. And here’s how to do just that.

Pigeon Proofing Solar Panels

Due to all those challenges mentioned above, you need to ensure that birds are prevented from building shelter beneath your solar panels.

Generally speaking, these panels have been fitted with a plastic strip from beneath. The strip is fitted with needles that touch the roof making it impossible for birds to penetrate and build shelter. Between the needles, bridging has been done to ensure that no bird can pass between the different needles.

The materials used in making the strip are sturdy and strong hence cannot be broken. Also, the construction of the clip is unique because it allows for easy assembly and installation, but difficult to be pried loose by the birds. The design characteristics make the whole creation fit for function.

In order to achieve this, pigeon proofing solar panels will come in handy, as they are able to protect your panels and your roof from these pesky birds.

Reasons Why You Need Pigeon Proofing Solar Panels

If the message hadn’t yet landed, allow us to reiterate the reason why you might need pigeon-proofed solar panels, not only to help maintain your solar panels, but also for the safety of any birds who may otherwise attempt to nest under them.

1. The product is designed and assembled to be durable and serve customers up to the same period as the panels will do. You definitely don’t want to be replacing the pigeon proofing clips often because you will be incurring costs.

2. If your roof doesn’t have any birds living under your solar panels, then your roof will be clean. Also, roof drainage will be efficient. You will not need to contract cleaning and roofing services to clean and repair your roof. In that respect, you will have saved some cash.

3. Bird noises will be a thing of the past (within reason, of course!). Though you can’t keep all the birds chirping at bay, when chicks are hatched in nests made under solar panels, they tend to make a lot of noise. Having the clips installed below your solar panels will help keep that noise at bay.

4. Assembling and installing the plastic clips is very easy. If you already have solar panels installed, you can attach the clips on your own. What’s better than being able to fix something and saving installation fees?

5. The materials used in the production of the plastic clips are generally designed to be resistant to both ultraviolet radiation and frost. The plastic used should be also recyclable, making it more environmentally friendly

6. Most insurers will not compensate for products that are scratched and destroyed for some reason. For instance, if the twigs used by birds to build nests scratch the transmission cables and lead to the panels malfunctioning, you may not be compensated.

You don’t have to incur extra costs in repairs on the cables and panels in general. Once the clips are in place, the only reason the panels will malfunction will be internal issues. In that case, your warranty will be valid and you won’t incur any charges.

The Bottom Line

There are multiple annoyances that pigeons can cause to solar panels, but when the solution is so simple, there really is no need to worry.

5 Ways To Improve The Taste Of Your Homebrewed Coffee

How many times have you sat in your local cafe, savouring your cup of barista-brewed Quad Venti White Mocha Frappuccino, admiring the extravagant latte art they’ve created, and feeling despondent about your own homemade efforts?

All is not lost; whilst you may not be able to make a swan out of frothed milk or recreate the buzz of a cafe in your living room, there are ways to make your domestic efforts taste as good as those made by a barista.

The key, we think, to improving the taste of your coffee often lies in experimentation. Fortunately, we’ve done the hard work for you, enduring a fair few flat-tasting whites and burning ourselves on various gadgets to bring you this; our 5 ways to improve the taste of your homebrewed coffee.

Try New Coffee Beans

One of the easiest ways to experiment and potentially improve the coffee taste is to try different beans. Beans all have their own nuanced character and flavour profiles and this means that some of them will naturally suit your own tastes more than others. Vietnamese Robusta coffee, for example, boasts clearly discernible chocolate and hazelnut notes, whilst Colombian Supremo coffee brings with it a beautiful, bittersweet caramel finish. Perhaps most distinctively of all, many Central American coffees, particularly those from Costa Rica, are remarkably fruity, even citrussy. It’s up to you to find your perfect match, flavour wise!

Choosing coffee beans is something of an art form in itself. You want the perfect mix of rich earthy flavours, maybe with some chocolate undertones or a little bitterness or fruit on the palate. Increasingly, you can find exciting global beans and blends in your local supermarket, but what’s really going to impress your clients is careful sourcing of the finest coffee from afar.

Some of the best coffee blends in the world are slightly above what you might want to pay but you are getting quality with every sip. Some of our favourite blends are Trung Nguyen from Vietnam, which blends Arabica and Robusta to a chocolatey, rich finish, Blue Mountain from Jamaica, and Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, from the birthplace of coffee. Of course, it’s all subjective; find what suits you and dive in.

One of the best methods of finding out which beans give you the best taste is to buy coffee beans from a variety of different locations and with different roast profiles (more on this later) and have a tasting session.

Think About The Quality Of The Water

So many people spend a lot of time, money, and effort perfecting their coffee brewing techniques and then don’t really ever think about the water they are mixing with it.

The brewing process is actually a little lesson in chemistry. The chemicals that are in the water and its hardness, as well as PH levels, will all play a big part in how the reactions take place. This can all impact the flavour. It could be that the water coming out of your tap is perfect, but more often than not, you may need to filter the water or even brew your coffee using spring water.

Since water makes up 90% of the drink, it’s worth considering investing in a filter if you’re to take this homebrewing thing seriously (you are; that’s why you’re here). Tap water can contain impurities such as minerals, metals and salts that can alter the taste, so the best thing to do is to use filtered water to give your coffee the best flavour.

How Dark Do You Want The Roast?

Darker roasts almost always end in a more bitter taste. The subtle and sweet flavours that are found in some types of coffee can get replaced by bitter notes when the coffee has been roasting for a long time. This can result in a more consistent taste but not necessarily one that you will enjoy. It can also lead to all coffee varieties tasting a little “samey”.

This is one of the reasons why it is so important to experiment with different types of coffee in search of your favourite, and this means different roast profiles. Luckily, when you buy coffee, whether it is from the store or from a specialist roaster, the roast profiles will often be outlined for you. The rest is really up to you, but sweeter and more floral flavours tend to be at the lighter end of the spectrum, if that’s to your particular taste.

It All Starts With Espresso

One way that you can revolutionise your coffee options is to first perfect your making of espresso coffee instead of brewing filter coffees. Espresso can be used as a basis for a variety of other drinks, or even consumed as it is for a quick pick-me-up.

If you want to drink latte and cappuccino like those you might buy in a local coffee shop then the espresso is a crucial step. This is the basis of all of these drinks and can allow you to drink milk-based beverages rather than filter coffees.

Don’t Be Afraid To Add Flavour

The market for adding flavours to your coffee after you’ve brewed it is getting forever more popular, both on the high street and at home. We’re not just talking about adding a bit of sugar like people used to do in the days where instant coffee was the most widely-consumed type; we’re thinking about everything from salted caramel syrups to, whisper it, a cheeky shot of Baileys.

When you go to a coffee shop, you’ll notice that there are a lot of different types of syrups you can add. These can be used to make everything from a caramel cappuccino to a hazelnut latte. The syrups are easily available online if you don’t fancy making them yourself, though you can also add spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, which can add complexity and sweetness to the flavour.

Finally, there are more varieties of milk and cream to go in your coffee now than ever before. The possibilities are virtually endless.

And with that, we can’t wait to join you for a cup soon!

Finding Love In Your 60s: What You Need To Know As A Single Senior

When you’re looking for love later in life, it can be challenging to know where to start, especially if you have recently come out of a long-term marriage or relationship. Whether it’s because of an amicable split, a difficult divorce, or an untimely loss, reclaiming your life as a senior single can be a daunting experience.

That shouldn’t mean that you shouldn’t share your golden years with a new companion, if that feels like the right thing to do. Getting your confidence back is the key to successful dating as a senior, and in our guide, we’ll help you with everything you need to know in order to find your perfect match.

Benefits Of Senior Dating

Many people assume that dating when you’re over 60 will be fraught with difficultly, but the truth is, many seniors find it can be more straightforward than dating in your 20s. The reason senior dating could be considered a more simple proposition is due to the fact that most people have a firmer grip on their sense of identity and what interests them as well as a history of past relationships to draw on, which provides the perfect foundation for knowing what they want from a potential partner.

As a mature person interested in finding new love or companionship in today’s modern world, there are more ways than ever before for how and where to meet people.

Meeting People Online

As we mentioned already, there are more ways than ever to meet people in today’s modern world, and this is due to the technological advancements that also let you shop, bank, and work online.

In the past, online dating was often seen as the last resort when traditional methods didn’t work, whereas it is now the go-to method to connect you with thousands in your immediate area, even when it comes to over 60s or 70s.

The key advantage of online dating is the fact that it puts all the power in your hands, and with so many people online, you are free to browse, choose who you contact, and decide who to ignore. Many online dating sites are free to use and only expect login details, a short biography, a location, and photos in order to get started. Other sites require you to pay a subscription fee and provide more information about yourself, such as a questionnaire, to help tailor your search.

Choosing The Right Dating Site

When you’re looking to start dating again, it’s crucial that you find a dating site that is right for you, and most seniors prefer to sign up to services that are tailored specifically for a mature audience, whether that’s an over 60s dating site or an app that caters to more mature interests, in order to match with like-minded people in a similar age bracket.

Inded, other people prefer to focus on shared interests rather than finding people of a similar age and find they enjoy the company of people who share their opinions on politics or world affairs and don’t mind whether they are older or younger than them.

Once you’ve found the right matchmaking service or app for you, you’ll need to create a profile to reflect your personality, world view, and interests. However, try not to list your characteristics or interests; instead, speak about the kind of person you are to give the reader a better idea of who might complement you and your life.

Read: 5 IDEAL tips on making your profile ping

When your profile is ready, don’t be afraid to respond to messages or send out your own to get to know people, and remember you don’t have to keep things online, you can meet up for actual dates in restaurants or museums, though remember to practice safe dating when doing so (more of that in a moment).

Finally, in order to complete your dating profile, it’s imperative to make sure that the photos you provide are clear and recent for the best chance of success finding a dating match.

Don’t Forget About Safety

The ugly side of online dating is the risk of falling for scams. People with malicious intent are everywhere on the web, and senior citizens are common targets. So, be careful when searching for romance online. For one, use legitimate websites. A credible dating platform has basic security measures to protect user data.

Premium dating services have fees, which means providing some financial details. You must be confident this information is safe. Another safety measure is to avoid giving away personal information. If someone you are chatting with seems too interested in personal details, be wary – it could be a scam.

In case an online interaction leads to a date, take the necessary precautions. Don’t invite an online date home, and stick to public settings like a restaurant. Finally, tell at least one other person where you will be and with whom.

Analogue Dating

If you’re having trouble connecting to people online or in-person, a great way to get back into the dating groove is by taking a summer getaway, as it’s the perfect environment to strike up a romance. Furthermore, holidaying when single offers you the opportunity to dictate your own travel itinerary, which will provide you with the perfect chance to tick off bucket-list experiences you’ve always dreamt about.

There may be a part of the world that you’ve always wanted to visit but never had the chance to go; consider adding some friends to your trip to help with any anxieties you may have about meeting people or dive in solo while signing up for activities that will let you meet people. Travelling alone can sometimes be a little daunting, but it’s the ideal way to meet new people who could become friends for life or new romantic partners.

Back on terra firma, consider positively old school methods of meeting new people, such as evening classes, volunteering, and the rest.

And with that, we can’t wait to be invited to the wedding!

The Most Common Causes Of A Blocked Drain

A blocked drain can be a frustrating and extremely inconvenient problem for homeowners. Not only can it cause unpleasant odours and standing water in sinks and showers, but it can also lead to more serious plumbing issues if not addressed promptly.

The most common causes of blocked drains include:

  • Pouring grease and oil down the drain
  • Flushing inappropriate items down the toilet, such as baby wipes, make- up wipes, cotton buds, paper towels, and hygiene products, plus using too much toilet paper
  • Clogs caused by hair and other debris such as soap scum or flowers from bath bombs in the shower or sink drain

This can happen over time, as people use their sinks, showers, and toilets. As the debris builds up, it can eventually clog the pipe, causing water to back up and create a blockage.

How To Prevent Such Blockages?

To prevent these types of blockages, it is important to avoid pouring grease and oil (including coconut oil – which is a popular oil to use for dental hygiene) down the drain, and to properly dispose of any waste materials in the correct disposal bin. Additionally, regular cleaning and maintenance of your drains can help to keep them clear and functioning properly.

So, Where Does A CCTV Drain Inspection Come In?

However, even with proper care and maintenance, your drains may still become blocked. In these cases, a CCTV drain inspection is a useful, often cost-effective tool in identifying the source of the blockage. With this type of inspection, a small camera is inserted into the drain, allowing a plumber to view the inside of the pipes and locate the blockage.

During a CCTV drain inspection, plumbers may find some blockages that may not be immediately apparent. For example, tree roots can sometimes grow into the pipes, causing blockages and damage to the plumbing system.

In addition, small animals such as rats and squirrels can also find their way into the pipes, leading to blockages.

In some cases, the cause of a blocked drain may be more difficult to identify. A build-up of mineral deposits, known as scale, can accumulate in the pipes over time, causing blockages and reducing the flow of water. In these cases, a professional plumber may be able to use specialised equipment to break up the scale and restore the flow of water.

Unusual Causes Of Blocked Drains

While these are the most common causes of blocked drains, there are also some more unusual causes. Aspect’s team of blocked drain experts have seen their fair share of objects blocked in drains when performing CCTV drain inspections. One of these unusual causes is foreign objects that have been flushed down the toilet or washed down the sink. This can include everything from:

  • Toys
  • Jewellery (including wedding rings and luxury watches)
  • False teeth
  • ‘Criminal evidence’ (we’ve seen this happen in movies- it doesn’t work well in real life!)

These foreign objects can become lodged in the pipes, causing a blockage that can be difficult to remove.

It is important to remember to only flush toilet-friendly items down the toilet, and to dispose of other items in a responsible manner to prevent them from ending up in drains and causing problems.

The Bottom Line

The most common causes of blocked drains are the build-up of grease and other debris, flushing inappropriate items down the toilet, and tree roots. However, during a CCTV drain inspection, more unusual causes such as foreign objects and corrosion can also be found.

By knowing the potential causes of a blocked drain, homeowners and property managers can take steps to prevent these issues and keep their plumbing system functioning properly.

The Best Italian Wines To Drink On New Year’s Eve

With Italy once again being named the world’s best place to drink wine in Last Minute’s Wine Travel Index, the temptation is certainly strong to pack a suitcase and head for a flavour of the Dolce Vita once Christmas Day is done and dusted.

But with the cost of living crisis continuing, and strikes recently announced at various airports across the country, a cheeky New Year’s trip to Bel Paese feels a little out of the question this year.

Instead, why not bring the flavours of Italy into your home for a sophisticated, delicious celebration as 2022 comes to a close? Whether you’re serving a feast inspired by the country’s famously fabulous food, or you’re simply looking for a particularly fine tipple to see in another turn around the sun, here are the best Italian wines to drink on New Year’s Eve.

Prosecco

Of course, we had to start here, with arguably Italy’s most beloved celebratory drink. Perfect with anti-pasti, Prosecco is best enjoyed as an aperitif to accompany stuzzichini (Italian nibbles) such as cured meats, buffalo mozzarella with cherry tomatoes, black olive tapenade and focaccia.

It’s equally good popped at a minute before midnight, though, let’s be honest!

Chianti

Chianti is probably one of Italy’s most iconic vintages, with ancient origins dating back to the Middle Ages.Traditionally the wine is made from the Sangiovese grapes and benefits from the rugged Tuscan terrain and diversity of soil, which adds great personality to its taste. Today, in Tuscany, tours of the Chianti region’s hillside estates are popular among tourists for both the quality of sampling opportunities and the stunningly picturesque landscape that is impossible to escape!

At home for New Year’s Eve, it’s a different story, of course, but the wine does hold up to the chillier climes of the season. The red fruit and herbaceous flavour of Chianti makes it the perfect partner to dishes that use olive oil or with red meats. Enjoy a glass of Chianti with a steak carpaccio served simply with a rocket salad, or, if you’re seeing out the year in style, why not serve yours alongside some liver and fava beans?

Montepulciano

This medieval hilltop town of Montepulciano in Southern Tuscany is one of extraordinary beauty, with the surrounding countryside covered in vineyards that produce the area’s famous Vino Nobile. Quite literally translated into ‘the perfect wine, of noble men’, the Nobile is once again the product of quality Sangiovese grapes combined with a perfected ageing process.

This medium-bodied red wine is one of Italy’s most popular grapes. Its robust flavour pairs well with roasted vegetables such as sweet potatoes, parsnips or beetroot, making it the perfect serve for a vegetarian feast this New Year’s Eve.

Barolo

If you’re serving something rich and extravagant like a roast rib of beef, then you’ll want a celebratory, tannic wine to match it; enter Barolo.

Hailing from Italy’s Piedmont region and made from a grape called Nebbiolo, Barolo is considered one of the world’s best wines, boasting complex aromas of rose, tar and liquorice.

When paired with red meat, the tannins soften in the mouth and the wine develops a luxurious texture, as well as making the meat feel more tender and its flavour more pronounced. Sounds just perfect for a lavish New Year’s Eve feast, don’t you think?

Sassicaia

We end with Sassicaia, the world’s first ‘super Tuscan’, a rule-breaking Italian wine that blends Bourdeaux’s Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and throws a little Italian wine-making sensibility into the mix. The result is spectacular.

Sassicaia is typically prized for its suppleness, fragrance, and grace. The wine has a rich, regal crimson colour and a round, savoury, full-bodied flavour. It also has smooth tannins and a lengthy finish. Additionally, it has a range of red fruit fragrances.

Sassicaia was created by defying the rules, yet it may be used in cooking just like any other good Tuscan red. Sassicaia wine may be used in marinades for red meats, to provide body to stews, and, of course, in ragus and other pasta sauces, in keeping with the celebrated Tuscan tradition of robust, generous cuisine. Due to its easy drinkability, it is also regarded as a wonderful table wine, and one fitting for your New Year’s Eve party.

And with that, we wish you a wonderful 2023!

Why Is Puppy Training So Important?

Getting a new puppy is an exciting experience, but with all the joy comes plenty of responsibilities. However, it’s not only about taking good care of it in terms of food and attention; more and more people are discovering the many benefits of puppy training.

If you start training your four-legged friend from the very beginning, you will ensure that it has a safe, comfortable, and, most importantly, happy life. If well-trained, a dog will be able to accompany you during various events and activities. This will also help your pup gain the confidence and social skills necessary to safely interact with other dogs and people of all ages.

Puppy training takes a lot of time and patience, and sometimes, it might get quite frustrating. Still, it’s going to determine your dog’s future – that’s why it’s crucial to put the effort or enroll your puppy in professional puppy training.

So, if you have just brought home a new furry ball and aren’t sure if puppy training is the right choice, read on and learn why it’s so beneficial!

It Can Prevent Future Behavioral Issues

Puppies are very curious creatures, and they’re eager to learn new things. Unfortunately, their exploratory nature can often get them into trouble. If they aren’t taught what is and isn’t acceptable behavior, they might develop bad habits.

For example, chewing and digging are typical puppy behaviours, but you should address them as soon as they first appear. If you let it go, your pup will start to consider these actions appropriate, and it will only become more difficult to break the habits as your dog grows up. The same goes for growling, barking, and biting people or other dogs; these issues will likely worsen over time and become a serious problem if ignored.

Preventing behavioral issues is the primary goal of puppy training. Then, it will be much easier to train it as an adult.

It Can Make Your Dog Less Aggressive

Dogs that don’t receive proper training are likely to be more aggressive. It means that they can bite people or other animals without any warning signs. This can be very dangerous or even lethal.

Aggressive dogs respond aggressively to outside stimuli and have to be treated by a professional. If you plan to have your dog around children, elderly people, or other pets, it’s crucial to prevent this behavior.

Puppy training can help your dog learn to respond to your commands in a safe and healthy way.

It Will Teach Your Puppy Useful Skills

During the training process, your dog will learn a few important tricks that could be helpful in everyday situations. For example, if you teach your pup how to sit on command, it will be easier to keep it still during grooming sessions or when taking photos. Also, learning how to walk on a leash can prevent it from pulling or causing any unwanted accidents with other people or dogs.

Learning to respond to commands can also help the dog in case of emergencies. If it gets lost or hurt, the dog will know how to ask for help or find its way back home.

As the guys at Blue Wheelers, a dog wash franchise in Australia, tell us, puppy training may also help your dog respond more favourably to regular grooming sessions. As you may know, some dogs need a fair amount of help in accepting being groomed, but since a clean dog equals a healthy dog, it’s certainly an important process to nurture.

It Will Enable You To Enjoy Time Outside Together

Spending time outside with a dog is not only about taking it for daily walks; if your puppy gets proper training, you will be able to share many moments with it in the future.

For example, if you’re an avid jogger or hiker, and your furry friend is well-trained, you can invite it to join you in any activity without worrying about it causing any harm. It will be able to keep up with you without causing problems on the trail or distracting you from running at full speed! In general, an obedient dog will be easier to spend time with, no matter your plans.

You Will Be Able To Take Your Pup To Social Gatherings

Most people that own dogs would like to bring them to social gatherings, such as parties and BBQs. Still, many are hesitant to do so because of the risk of their dog causing trouble or not behaving properly.

If you want to be sure that your dog will behave in a social setting, puppy training is the way to start. This will help it learn its place in the pack and how to interact with other people and animals in a safe and pleasant way.

The Bottom Line

As you can see, puppy training might be highly beneficial for both you and your dog. If you want to bring your pup with you on family trips or take part in various events, it will be easier to make it behave if it has received proper training.

No matter if you do the training yourself or decide to work with a professional, you still need to practice daily and reinforce the lessons as often as possible. Of course, it’s not always easy to find the time or motivation to do so, but if you want to be sure that your companion will grow up to become a well-behaved dog, puppy training is a must!

5 Ideal Tips On How To Taste Wine Like A Pro

And who would like to taste the wine this evening?

The sommelier looms large over the table, you gesture at each other, there’s a nervous giggle.

”Just pour it and put us out of our misery”, you whisper.

We’ve all been there, and we’d all like to have done things differently, to speak suavely about the finish, the nose and the notes…

Well, now you can. If you have designs on becoming an (almost) professional sommelier, wine taster, or simply be more conversant in the art of fine wine, then look no further; here are 5 IDEAL tips on how to taste wine like a pro.

Set & Setting

Distraction and diversion is the enemy of an effective wine tasting experience. You’ll need good conditions to concentrate on the precise appearance, flavours and aromas of the wine you’re tasting; accordingly, it’s not a wise idea to start your wine tasting session in a noisy or crowded room.

What’s more, you have to control your senses, particularly the nose, so avoid strong perfumes, cooking, flowers, or even pets, if you want to give yourself the best chance of tasting wine accurately.

You’ll also need the right glass; a perfectly clean one in the right shape, as even minor factors can have a huge effect on the taste of the wine itself, your senses or both.

Make sure your wine is at the appropriate temperature (different, incidentally, for each grape) and don’t eat or drink anything with a strong flavour right before tasting.

Of course, you can successfully and satisfyingly taste wines from the comfort of your home, but to put things in perspective and receive expert guidance, it’s also prudent to attend a proper wine tasting event from time to time, to develop a language and feel for how to taste wine both precisely and intuitively.

You Drink With Your Eyes First

Just as they say that you eat with your eyes first, the same is true for wine. So, pour yourself about one third of the glass and observe. Really, we mean it; give your wine a thorough once over, through the side of the glass in a neutral light.

Next, look straight down into the glass, and then roll the wine toward the edges. Note the colour, opacity and viscosity. In doing so, you’ll be able to tell most information that can be found on the etiquette (the vintage, ABV or grape variety) of your wine.

This is perhaps even more pertinent a point when tasting premium spirits such as Armagnac, Calvados and Cognac. As the experts at Spirits of France tell us, the intensity and clarity of colour in high-ABV liquors in a useful marker of their quality, all before you’ve sniffed and sipped the spirit.

Use Your Nose

After you’ve looked, it’s time to give it a sniff. Give the glass a swirl and hover over it with your nose – don’t get too close and don’t put your nose inside the glass; a rookie error, make no mistake. Take several quick sniffs and let your brain process the aromas.

Primary aromas are those derived from grapes, and include fruits in general, but also herbs and floral notes. It should be noted that all wines should smell mainly of fresh fruits. If not, they are probably too cold, too sweet, very old or simply spoiled.

Secondary aromas are linked to the winemaking process and these are yeast-derivatives, cheese rind, nut husk or stale beer.

Tertiary aromas come with time and aging, and many say that they are the easiest to detect; coconut, cedar, vanilla, caramel, chocolate, old tobacco, roasted nuts or cured leather are common ones to add to your repertoire.

It’s good to start with general notes, especially at the beginning, so ask yourself firstly; do you smell fruits? Great. Red fruits? Blue fruits? Black fruits? Try to get into specifics slowly and don’t get frustrated; you’ll never be able to identify all smells, so treat it more like a game than a test. Indeed, you don’t need to know each smell to taste or order wine like a professional.

A Taste Sensation

Now onto the most fun part, which the independent wine merchants at Seven Cellars guide us through. First, they say, you should take a small sip, swallow the wine and let the taste fill your mouth, circulate it and focus on what’s going on. Tastes will be coming to you retro-nasally, that’s why they change while you swallow.

Your tongue will tell you if what you’re tasting is sweet, sour, salty or bitter. The sour is always there because of the grapes, but it may vary due to the climate and grape type; sweetness appears when grapes retain some of their sugar, but there are varieties known for their bitterness and even salinity, which is the rarest.

Read: 6 of the best Australian wine regions

Your tongue is also able to detect the texture of the wine; it’s ethanol that gives it, that’s why the increase in texture will normally appear in high-alcohol wines. You can taste tannin too, a drying sensation found mostly in red wines. Tasting ends with determining the length of the taste – how long is it until you can’t taste anything anymore?

Good wine should be balanced (appropriate proportions of sweet, sour, salty and bitter), harmonious (you can identify different tastes, sure, but they’ve blended and work well together), complex (many flavours – the more experienced taster you are, the more you’ll be able to detect), evolved (it has aged well) and complete (it simply means that everything that was mentioned before, works). Of course, practice makes perfect, which is the ideal excuse to do more wine tasting later down the line.

Evaluate

Finally, it’s to the evaluation, where you get to flex your tasting skills. Ask yourself the most important question first – did you like the wine? If not, why? Was it too alcoholic? Too tannic? Would you like to drink it later or not? Was there something unique about the wine?

Don’t be afraid to experiment and express your opinions; if you don’t like something, that doesn’t mean you’ve been amateurish in your approach, just discerning. It may be helpful to start a journal or download an app that will help you keep track of the wines you’re tasting. Et voilà, you can start your career as a sommelier. Cheers!

5 Ideal Rural Activities To Enjoy In Rural Wales On Your Next Holiday

Doesn’t the rat race get you oh so weary? Isn’t there more to life beyond the desk and doors of the office? Is your bedroom window offering nothing but views of concrete on concrete? Urban suffocation got you breathing difficult? Sometimes, you don’t have to hop on a plane to enjoy the serenity and splendour of sheer, unadulterated countryside and all the relaxation and recharge that brings.

If you’re looking for something unfamiliar, untapped but most importantly, doable in a day, then cast your covetous glances west, to Wales, and the still, calm beauty you’ve been dreaming of. Once there, you’ll need a plan. Here’s a start; our 5 IDEAL activities to enjoy in rural Wales on your next holiday.

Hike The Glyders, Snowdonia

Sure, we could dedicate a whole article to walks in Snowdonia (hey editor! I have an idea), but we’re in the business of narrowing things down, so here goes; The Glyders offers arguably Wales’ finest one day hike, and that’s reason enough to visit, right? You won’t find anywhere this striking, this rugged and this rural just four hours (and another seven miles hiking of course) from London by car, and that’s for sure.

We say hike, but part of this ascent of Wales’ fifth tallest point is more of a scramble. That’s fine by us, we love to get stuck in. It’s a near 1’200 metre climb of three peaks, Tryfan, Glyder Fach and Glyder Fawr, but you’ll be rewarded with views which verge on the brutal, but are certainly brilliant too.

Beached Wales

When you mention the words beach and Wales together, it’s usually a more troubling image of the world’s largest marine mammal that comes to mind. But to play word association like this would be to miss out on the largely undiscovered, wholly beautiful beaches of the country. That’s a country with 157 miles of coastline, much of which is rugged and arresting in equal measure.

Head to Pembrokeshire in the south (just under two hours from the capital) for a selection of the finest stretches of sand and surf; both Broad Haven beach and Barafundle beach have been bestowed with the Blue Flag award which celebrates water quality and environmental protection of beauty spots worldwide. What’s more, in 2017 the latter was named as one of the world’s best beaches by Passport Magazine. You’ll never want to leave.

If you’re intending to turn your visit into more of a holiday than day trip, there are some truly splendid cottages in Wales to choose from close to the revered West Coast. Alternatively, should you be so enamoured as to make this thing permanent, there are holiday homes for sale in North Wales that are worth considering, with the region just as well known for its excellent beaches – counting Anglesey, Llandudno, and Barmouth amongst them – as the country’s West.

Fine Dining South Of Snowdonia

A drive full of spectacular scenery, a deep dive into rural Wales and a restaurant regarded as one of the UK’s very best? Yes, yes and yes. Please. Just south of Snowdonia National Park is Michelin starred Ynyshir, chef Gareth Ward’s temple to meat, salt and fat. If you’re after a very unique (over twenty courses of protein proud, profoundly flavoursome feasting) then this is where you should head.

So good, it was recently announced as the UK’s number one in the highly influential National Restaurant Awards. It’s just 45 minutes from Cardiff, but very much in the countryside, meaning the only obstacle to your eating is whether you’re able to secure an exclusive seat.

Even closer to the capital – twenty minutes by car – is Home by James Sommerin, another Michelin star holder with cooking of a more classical, but no less delicious, bent.

If you’re heading over from England intent on a good meal before exploring the rest of the country, then just over the border is another award winning eatery, the Whitebrook in Monmouthshire. Again, the surrounds are as rural and serene as you could imagine, and the menu dictated by what’s good locally.

Horse Riding In The Brecon Beacons

That sense of freedom you’re craving, with the wind in your hair and fresh air in your lungs, could be satisfied with a spot of horse riding. The U.K seems to have an affinity with all things equestrian, and Wales is no exception.

The famous Brecon Beacons National Park, in particular, boasts some of the best opportunities for horse-based holidays, partly owing to a network of bridleways meaning you can steer well clear of any busy roads. Great stuff. There are dedicated centres offering bespoke, tailor-made trips, so whether you’re after a gallop or trot, you’ll be covered.

Should you want to extend your equestrian adventure, a celebration holiday home in North Wales makes an excellent base for exploring the region’s bridleways and stunning countryside

Go Wine Tasting At Cwm Deri, Pembrokeshire

British wine is having a real moment right now, spurred on by some quality sparkling vintages of late. In Britain there’s always been a strong tradition of making fruit and flower flavoured wines and the guys at Cwm Deri Vineyard in Pembrokeshire are staying true to this age-old practice. Surrounded by the Pembrokeshire National Park, Cwm Deri Vineyard produces fruit and flower wines and liquors to the highest standard possible.

The best time to visit the vineyards here is between summer and late autumn where the fruit can be seen maturing into tightly-packed bunches of wine-making grapes ready for harvesting before the first winter frosts. The estate itself boasts stunning views across the vineyard and beyond, all the way to the national park from its patio and terrace; the perfect place to enjoy the liquid bounty of local fruits. Chin chin!

5 Ideal Reasons You Should Move To Manchester

The birthplace of computers, railways, football leagues, Oasis and of course, Vimto…Manchester must be doing something right. But while the city’s most famous sons so often sang of wanting to escape it, these days the young, the hip and the cool are instead flocking to the city.

On the up, and that’s for sure, and now widely recognised as one of the most dynamic and thriving places in Europe. If you’re still on the fence, then read on; our 5 IDEAL reasons you should move to Manchester.

The Pick Of Property

Manchester currently sits in a very sweet spot indeed, of being the focus of much regeneration and investment, but with property prices yet to catch up. As a quick comparison, the average house price in London clocks in at over £500’000 whereas in Manchester, it’s just shy of £250’000. You do the math(s).

To put the affordability of northern property into perspective, it’s worth comparing what you could buy for the same price in the North compared to in London. In London, for instance, you could buy a two-bedroom apartment for, say, £600,000, whilst in Manchester, you could purchase a spacious six bedroom house with a garden for the same price. Rental prices follow similar relative patterns.

Because of recent regeneration, there’s a far greater scope of choice and bang for your buck, too. If you’re looking for a new apartment in Manchester City Centre, some of the best locations include Deansgate and the Northern Quarter; certainly worth a look.

Nightlife Nirvana

If going out and having a drink with friends and colleagues is something that’s important to you, then firstly, where’s our invite? And secondly, rest assured, Mancunians love a drink or three, and as such there are plenty of pubs, bars and clubs to choose from here, with something to suit everyone’s esoteric tastes and differing spending styles.

Oxford Road is where you’ll find most of the budget-friendly, student-focused bars. Or if you’re looking for hipster vibes, then the popular Northern Quarter has a wide range of options to choose from. Spinningfields is home to the more upmarket restaurant and bar scene, or you can check out the buzzing LGBT scene at Canal Street, home to Manchester’s gay village. Never has ‘something for everyone’ sounded so succint.

Escaping The City Is Easy

Manchester has undergone a massive amount of regeneration since the turn of the century, and it’s not difficult to miss. In the city centre, you’ll find an appealing combination of Manchester’s proud industrial history with viaducts, towering mills and a large canal network, plus the sleek, modern glass and steel structures that power its digital future.

But, if the urban setting gets too much for you – at least for a little while – it’s really easy to hop on a train or get behind the wheel and hotfoot it out of there for the weekend. Some of the many nearby, rural areas to visit include Flixton, Broadbottom, Disley and Dobcross.

Creative Job Opportunities

Who says that you need to move to London to get ‘the right’ career these days? Manchester is quickly becoming a creative powerhouse in the North, and when it comes to career options, there’s plenty for everybody.

The city centre is home to a wide range of industries from banking and finance to charities to digital agencies and creators, and just up the road at Salford Quays you’ll find MediaCity and the ITV studios – the perfect location for anybody looking to move for a career in film and TV.

A Flourishing Food Scene

Each October the food press delivers a familiar refrain; no Michelin stars for Manchester. Again. Well, while we’ve long been convinced of the quality of the city’s restaurants, in recent years the dining options across the city truly have kicked up a notch. The little red book has duly noticed. This elevation extends beyond restaurant dining too, with many opting for the luxury of a private chef in Manchester to bring restaurant-quality experiences directly to their homes.

Leading the pack is Mana, a Scandi/Japanese mash-up led by Noma alumni Simon Martin and garnering rave reviews across the board and, in 2019, a Michelin star. Also receiving praise in the nationals and no less delicious is Gary Usher’s Kala, which elevates the humble into something truly brilliant. Then there’s Masterchef winner Simon Wood’s restaurant, Wood, Stockport’s Where the Light Gets In and heavyweights Dishoom and Hawksmoor. In short, this is a city whose food scene is positively thriving.

Cosy Tips For Creating A Hygge Home This Winter

The time-honoured Danish tradition known as hygge (pronounced ‘hoo-gah’, rather than ‘huggy’) has become something of a global phenomenon over the past few years, prompting homemakers around the world to embrace cosy, calming Scandinavian habits.

Perhaps one of the main reasons for this hygge obsession is the way in which it can help make a long, dark, cold winter more bearable for anyone living in more northerly climes, where darkness reigns for the majority of each day.

Whatever the reason, if you are keen to introduce some hygge into your family’s life this winter, there are plenty of ways to make the most of this mood-boosting Scandinavian philosophy. Read on for some helpful tips for making your home more hygge-friendly so you and your loved ones can have a cosy and contented winter – even when “the weather outside is frightful”.

Stick To Soothing Colour Schemes

A significant part of the hygge lifestyle is creating a calm and soothing atmosphere, where you can rest and recharge your batteries. To help create this tranquil effect, it’s best to decorate your home using neutral colours that won’t be too bright, brash, or discordant.

Using gentle nature-inspired hues such as white, cream, grey, lavender, duck egg blue, and pale green is an easy way to create that soul-soothing effect – not just on your walls, but also in your choice of soft furnishings and other décor. This includes everything from curtains and cushions to rugs, throws, and bedding.

Use Strategic Lighting To Create A Warm & Cosy Glow

Hygge’s primary focus is creating a feeling of cosiness, and if you use your lighting cleverly, you can effortlessly create an inviting and decidedly cosy atmosphere.

If you don’t have young children – or cats, for that matter – you can place lit candles around your lounge and dining room when night begins to fall, for that gentle flickering glow. Of course, if you do have young kids or curious felines, flameless LED candles will work just as well.

A roaring fire is another decidedly hygge feature, creating a rich golden point of light, not to mention delicious warmth. There’s nothing like cosying up around the fireplace, toasting marshmallows and sipping cups of hot cocoa for that truly hygge sense of family and togetherness.

Another wonderful way to create a cosy atmosphere with lighting is by hanging twinkling garlands of fairy lights around the home, or placing Himalayan salt lamps in strategic spots. Salt lamps are supposed to have a range of health benefits, as well as emitting a warm and gentle light.

Fill The Air With Festive Fragrance

A hygge home doesn’t only look and feel cosy and delightful, it smells like it too. Tap into the spirit of hygge – and of the holiday season – by scenting the air of your home with some delicious and evocative smells that evoke feelings of warmth, joy, cosiness, and celebration.

In Denmark, the birthplace of hygge, homemakers achieve this by using natural fragrances where possible, rather than simply placing scented candles here and there. You can emulate them by placing pretty bowls filled with beautifully fragranced pot pourri throughout the home. In fact, if you’re in the mood, you can even create your very own pot pourri from scratch, using your own favourite ingredients to create a bespoke scent.

Another easy and low-cost way to fill the house with the scents of Christmas is to create orange pomanders, a simple festive craft that your children may be eager to help with.

To make them, simply buy several oranges and stud them all over with cloves, then place them around the home. Over time, as the fruit begins to dry out, it will release a tantalising scent of orange peel and cloves. To make the fragrance even stronger, you can dust the oranges with your favourite festive spices, such as cinnamon and nutmeg.

Think About Texture

Since hygge is all about warmth, cuddles and cosiness, it’s important that you think carefully about the different textures you have in your home.

Softness is key for creating a hygge atmosphere, so you may want to invest in some delightfully fluffy blankets, throws and cushions in every room, so your loved ones can easily snuggle up and get comfortable and cosy

If you have tiled, wooden, or laminate flooring, which can feel cold underfoot in the wintertime, you may also want to lay down some thick fluffy rugs here and there around the home – and treat yourselves to some warm slippers so you never have to step directly onto a chilled floor. Hygge insists on warmth and comfort, after all!

Keep Your Home Clear Of Clutter

A cluttered and disorganised home is definitely not conducive to generating feelings of hygge in your family. Being surrounded by an untidy jumble of belongings can create subtle feelings of stress and agitation that prevent you and your loved ones from feeling truly relaxed and content.

As a result, it’s important that you keep clutter in your home to a minimum. Dedicate a little time each day to walking around your home and tidying away anything that has been left out of place.

Of course, keeping a tidy home shouldn’t be your sole responsibility by any means. If you haven’t done so already, you should ask your children to take responsibility for keeping their bedrooms free from clutter – for example, by making sure they always place their dirty laundry in the basket and put away any books and toys after they have finished playing with them.

Create Cosy Bedrooms For Restful Winter Slumber

During the winter months, when darkness encroaches on our lives and we often get up to go to work and come home in the gloom, our bodies can crave extra sleep.

Having a warm and inviting bedroom helps to create the perfect atmosphere for deep and restorative slumber during those long, dark nights. To achieve this soothing feel, you can use those hygge elements of soft textures, gentle twinkling lights, and neutral colours already mentioned.

When it comes to the bedroom furnishings, you can also improve each bedroom’s aura of hygge by selecting good-quality, long-lasting pieces that provide both comfort and subtle elegance. For example, when it comes to choosing the ideal bed, rather than settling for a generic frame and mattress, you can select an attractive bespoke bed customised according to each family member’s preference.

As the bespoke beds experts at Wow Beds tell us, once you have the perfect furniture in place, you can add extra hygge elements in the form of fluffy rugs and thick, soft blankets, and decorate using vases of dried flowers that will look beautiful throughout the winter.

Decorate Your Home With Nature’s Help

Last but not least, another simple but effective way to generate a heart-warming feeling of hygge throughout your home is to head outside and find some natural decorations.

For example, your family can go for a walk in the woods and collect pine cones, and sprigs of holly, ivy and mistletoe, which you can use to create your own handmade wreaths. Just be aware that plants such as ivy are toxic if ingested, so keep them out of reach of young children and pets.

When it comes to choosing a Christmas tree, a real one is the hygge option – but to keep your festive season environmentally friendly, consider selecting a young fir or spruce planted in a pot, which you can then transfer to the garden when Christmas is over.

Have A Hygge Holiday Season

As you can see, transforming your home into a warm, cosy, and comforting hygge haven is as easy as pie, and it doesn’t have to cost you much either. Using these simple but effective tips, you will soon have a Danish-inspired home that lifts your spirits and makes you feel a rosy glow of contentment every time you enter this festive season, gifts, crackers, sprouts and all. Merry Christmas!

Choosing The Right Windows For Your Loft Conversion

If you have decided on a loft conversion for your home, one of the most important choices that you are going to be faced with is which type of windows to have installed. This is such a crucial decision, as the windows you pick for your loft conversion will determine the amount of fresh air and natural light that you are going to get.

There are several types of windows that are available for a loft conversion. The best type for your needs is going to depend on the type of loft conversion you are planning on getting, and the plans that you have for the space, such as whether you will be using it as a bedroom, bathroom, or a home office for example.

Some of the most popular types of windows for loft conversions include skylights, also known as roof windows, dormer windows, casement windows, gable end windows, and balcony windows. Let’s take a look at each of these in more detail.

Roof Windows

All pitched roof windows are a great choice for any kind of loft conversion. Even if you are only going for a simple loft conversion that does not involve any alterations being made to the construction of the roof, you can have this type of window installed to let light and air into your new space. Find quality designs for all pitched roof windows here.

Roof windows are one of the easiest ways to make sure that you are getting plenty of natural light in your loft conversion. They can be easily installed into the existing roof to provide direct light down into the space, whether you’re using it as a home office or an extra bedroom.

Dormer Windows

Dormer windows are one of the most commonly used types of windows for loft conversions. These windows are vertically installed at the slopes of your roof. This creates a box shape that, in turn, creates more space and headroom in your loft conversion, along with letting more natural light in.

Since a dormer window will involve altering your roof, it’s important to bear in mind that you may need to get planning permission before you have this kind of window added to your loft conversion. You will usually need to ensure that it is not disrupting your neighbours and that the materials you use are the same as or similar to the rest of the house.

Balcony Windows

Balcony – or, Juliet – windows are a stunning addition and a great way to add more natural light to your loft conversion, while adding more design flair and some character to your home.

Balcony windows might be one of the most expensive types of loft conversion windows to go for, but they are definitely worth considering if it’s in your budget as they really do set your converted loft apart from the rest. Balcony windows can be built into your loft conversion with additional safety features such as protective glass or railings, depending on the amount of space you have and safety concerns. You can also create an actual balcony, allowing you to enjoy an outdoor area that can be accessed directly from the loft conversion.

Gable End Windows

If your home has a ridged roof, then the gable refers to the point at which the walls of your property meet, forming a triangle. A gable end window is designed to work within this space, creating a beautiful window that flows with the natural design and shape of your home. These windows are often used alongside pitched roof windows in a simple loft conversion, or in some cases, they can be worked into a dormer loft conversion depending on your property.

Casement Windows

A casement window is a window that is similar to the rest of the windows in your home. However, before you decide to go for this kind of window, it is important to bear in mind that you can usually only have them installed with certain kinds of loft conversions, as they can restrict openings.

You will also need to ensure that they are compliant with safety rules and that safety regulations are met. If the type of loft conversion you are having will allow for casement windows, then they are a great choice since they let in plenty of natural light and are easy to open and close.

The Main Things To Consider Before Choosing Your Windows

Before choosing the right windows for your loft conversion, there are some key factors that you should keep in mind. These include:

Type Of Loft Conversion

The type of loft conversion that you are going to have will be a big factor in determining the best type of windows. Some windows are just not possible to have with certain loft conversions. For example, if you don’t want to alter the size or shape of the loft, or do any construction work on the roof, then you are usually limited to roof light windows, and a dormer window would not be possible. It is worth speaking to an expert about your options and to get their recommendations.

Budget

How much you want to spend is another factor to carefully consider. Some types of windows, such as balcony windows, are significantly more expensive than others, so this will need to be factored into the total budget for your loft conversion.

Don’t just think about the price of converting the loft as having certain types of windows added to it could significantly increase the amount that you spend. That said, you may also be adding significant value here, though do factor that into your budgeting, too.

Safety

Safety may be another concern for you when it comes to determining the best type of windows for your loft conversion. Balcony windows might feel too risky for you if you have young children and want to use the loft as a playroom, for example. However, the good news is that as long as you have your loft conversion done by a reputable and trustworthy company, you can rest assured that any windows will meet safety regulations.

It’s also important to consider fire safety here, as building regulations require you to factor in the full extent of an escape route prior to undergoing your conversion.

Light

How much light do you want to get into your loft conversion? This is another main question to consider when picking windows and internal doors. For example, if you are using your loft conversion as a bedroom, then natural light might not be a big concern for you compared to if you are planning to use it as a home office. Some windows are bigger than others and should therefore allow more natural light into the space.

Planning Permission

If you don’t want to go through the hassle of getting planning permission for your loft conversion, then this might restrict you when it comes to the type of windows you can have.

Loft conversions are generally included with permitted development meaning you don’t always have to get planning permission for them. But if your windows are going to be a significant change to your property, or they alter the structure of the roof or view of your house, then planning permission may be required before the work can go ahead.

Whatever your reasons for considering a loft conversion, such projects can be an ideal way to get more room in your home. Whatever you plan to use your converted loft for, choosing the right windows is important.

How To Throw The IDEAL New Year’s Eve Party

The perfect New Year’s Eve party doesn’t have to be a chore to throw, and it doesn’t have to put you out of pocket, either. Whether you’re a regular at throwing end-of-year bashes or it’s your first time hosting an event, we have a few hot tips to make sure you welcome the New Year with a bang.

Décor

With Christmas just passed, there’s no need to splash out on fancy new décor. Simply take down the Santas and the put away the nativity scene, but leave up your twinkly Christmas lights. Magic.

If you’re looking to light up the New Year, then consider indoor sparklers or fireworks. Alternatively, to bring the New Year’s in with a bang, minus the fire hazard, consider making confetti poppers to add a bit of nostalgic fun to New Year’s Eve. Fillable poppers are easy to find at a local craft store or online; wrap these in gold and silver tissue paper and fill them with shredded tinsel and colourful confetti.

BYOB & Cocktail’s

Make your New Year’s Eve party a BYO (bring your own) event. That way, guests are sure to be satisfied with the choice of drink on offer and you don’t have to spend a fortune on drinks guests may not even like!

As the host, consider providing some cocktails to get the party started. Don’t go crazy and offer a million and one different concoctions – rehearse a few classics until they are the best they can be.

Read: 9 cocktails that are super easy to make at home

If you’re feeling adventurous, whip up a cotton candy champagne cocktail. Simply add a small ball of candyfloss after filling the flute with champagne, trying to let it float. If the candyfloss is coloured, it will add a hint of colour to the champagne, as well as a delicious sweetness. These add a whimsical, elegant touch to end the evening.

Just make sure to have some non-alcoholic beverages for those who aren’t drinking, too. And pace yourself – it’s not fun if everyone is too drunk to count down to midnight!

It’s All About Finger Food

Don’t worry about dishing up a three-course meal at your NYE bash; with delicious drinks on offer and dancing to be had, your guests don’t want to be uncomfortably full. Instead, make a selection of tasty finger food.

While there’s nothing wrong with popping down to Iceland and picking up a frozen party food pack and a few dozen sausage rolls, if you want to go the extra mile, here are some ideas for a homemade finger food spread:

Party Games

Cutting loose and having some fun on New Year’s Eve doesn’t have to cost any money. Some of the best games involve simple props that you already have at home.

A quiz is the best way to keep a crowd entertained. A trivia test of events that have happened over the past year is always a nice way to round off the year.

The Name Game is great for a large group – it’s easy to prepare and play. Each guest writes the name of a person, real or fictional, and puts it into a large bowl. The names are mixed around and everyone has to pick one out. Guests must then guess who everyone is by asking each other questions and giving occasional clues. You can make this as silly and comical as you like!

Charades is another fun, free and classic party game. We’re also fans of Heads Ups, the fun and hilarious game by Ellen DeGeneres, which is one of the best games to play with friends, we think.

Whilst you’re playing games, throw on a party playlist– give your guests a chance to let their hair down and have a boogie.

A Makeshift Photobooth

To make your New Year’s Eve bash an unforgettable one, why not create a photobooth. Make your own photo booth by setting up a camera in the corner of a room with your own fancy props and scenery as a backdrop!

Potatoes: How To Get Those Roasties Right

0

Some believe that roast potatoes are the star of the show when it comes to a Sunday lunch, roast dinner, or, well, just about any meal, and there can be a lot of pressure to get them right. Fortunately, we’re experts on doing just that…

The Right Variety

First things first, choosing the right spud variety is essential to the fluffy interior, crispy exterior that we’re surely all seeking. General wisdom suggests that you want a floury- sometimes called fluffy – variety, such as King Edward’s or Maris Piper, as opposed to their waxier cousins.

Keep Things Uniform & Remember To Rinse

Peel your spuds and cut into a medium, uniform size. Making sure they’ll all the same size allows them to cook at the same time.

It’s good to rinse some starch off the spuds, preferably in a sieve or colander under cold, running water. The starch eventually turns into glucose, which caramelises excessively. Burnt edges are not what we’re after, as they won’t crisp. You could even soak your peeled potatoes overnight if you’re patient enough.

Always Boil From Cold

Always, always boil your spuds from a cold start, with a good amount of salt (as much as 15g per litre) in the water. We want them to be soft, fluffy and yielding, but not lose their shape. It’s often a game of who blinks first, but take them as far as you can, as long as they’re still retaining their shape. A little roughed-up around the edges is fine; desirable even.

Fluff Them Up

London restaurant Roast says that “after you par boil your potatoes, make sure to fluff them up, as this will release steam, which dries up the potatoes. This is what makes them nice and crunchy on the outside once they are roasted”.

One failsafe way to get those potatoes fluffy on the inside and crunchy on the outside is to place them in a colander and rattle them around – this will fluff them up help to make the skin crispy.

Dry & Cool

Once your spuds are cool, be careful not to break the potatoes, carefully transfer them to a wire rack to air dry, using a slotted spoon for a controlled transition. Once they’re completely dry and cool, move them to the fridge to get cold.

Again, overnight is best here, as the extra time in the fridge removes any moisture still present, promoting the crispiest finish

Choose Your Oil

The golden rule here is that you must cover your spuds in olive oil, butter, goose or duck fat for that wonderful golden colour.

When it comes to choosing your cooking oil, Roast Restaurant says that “you can use olive oil to cook the potatoes as a healthier alternative but for the ultimate roastie, goose fat is the best to use, you can get this from your local butcher”.

However, here at IDEAL we love to use some of the beef fat that rendered from the roasting process (you can buy more in any good supermarket) to coat your spuds, if you’re having beef, of course.

Heat & Baste

Have your oven heated to 200°C in advance. While they are roasting, baste your spuds in the fat every so often to keep them moist and make them extra crunchy.

Don’t Forget To Season

When your spuds are extra crispy and properly golden brown, take them out and finish with a little more salt. We think rock salt is best here.

Roast concurs “For best flavours, always season with rock salt and fresh herbs. Rosemary and thyme complement roasties beautifully”.

We have to admit that we’re feeling a little hungry after writing that; is it acceptable to have roast potatoes for dinner?
