7 IDEAL TIPS FOR A STRESS-FREE HOLIDAY WITH A BABY

Travelling to places such as Marutitius, Tobago or Morocco may seem laughable to many new parents but, believe it or not, holidaying to somewhere ‘grown-up’ before a baby is six months old is the best time to travel.

Indeed, going on holiday with a newborn, or before baby can crawl, is probably the best chance of a relaxing break any new parent will get until the child is at least 5 years old. Think about it; babies can’t move, are easily portable, and spend their days sleeping and drinking.

So, with the help of Bilia Baby UK, the home of handmade and eco-friendly colourful moses baskets, here’s 7 IDEAL tips for a stress-free holiday with a baby.

ALWAYS BOOK APARTMENTS RATHER THAN HOTEL ROOMS

Whilst hotel rooms can be great when it’s just the two of you, when you’re travelling for a week or more with a baby, you’ll come to realise that the extra space an apartment has is an absolute godsend. You’ll be able to spread yourselves out a little more, with special spots that are dedicated to baby changing, feeding stations etc. You’ll feel more like you’re in a home-away-from-home than just a room with a loo and tiny sink for prepping everything, and more often than not, you’ll have your own laundry facilities, a separate area to relax in the evening without disturbing a sleeping baby, a kitchen area for washing bottles, and more.

BE MINDFUL WHEN YOU BOOK YOUR FLIGHT

Depending on what your baby is used to, their moods throughout the day, and your regular routine, you’ll need to book your flight according to when your baby is generally the happiest and most content. Whilst it may be cheaper to fly at night, it’s worth paying the extra to fly at the most appropriate time of the day for your baby. Whilst you’re booking, request a baby bassinet. You won’t always be able to get one, but when you do, it can be a real lifesaver, and beats having to spend the whole flight unable to move with baby on your lap.

DO OVER PACK YOUR ON-BOARD BAG FOR BABY

Everyone knows that babies are messy – it’s natural. However, being caught off guard ten minutes into a flight will be a disaster if you don’t have everything to hand. Make sure that you have extra outfits, wipes, dummies, bottles, and nappies in your carry-on changing bag, with everything you’ll need.

Another little tip is to dress the baby in layers that can be taken off if they get too hot, or layered on when it gets cold. Airplanes have a strange climate, so you’ll be ready for every eventuality if you pack more outfits than you think you might need. It’s worth packing a few extra tops for mum and dad, too.

As for luggage, only pack your necessities that you know won’t be readily available at your destination, such as medication, teething gels, formula. Nappies are readily available in every country, so think twice about packing more than two days’ worth.

DON’T OVER PACK YOUR HOLIDAY ITINERARY

We’re not saying you can’t do the adventures you’ve had planned for months, but take into consideration that you probably won’t be able to fill your holiday with days full of expansive trips across islands with baby in tow. Consider keeping your days split in half – try planning a morning or afternoon activity, whenever you’re baby is usually on their best behaviour, and plan to relax and enjoy the time together chilling for the rest of the day. You’ll appreciate the time you’ve spent together going at a slower pace.

EAT EARLIER

Most people eat later than they would normally eat at home whilst on holiday because they’re out and about, enjoying a full day of sunshine – however, with a baby, it’s difficult, but don’t think you can’t dining out at all! You can still enjoy a fancy meal together, just make sure you head to the restaurant as early as possible. You’ll find that the restaurants are much quieter, you’re likely to be served faster, you won’t find yourself sat next to the young, newly-formed lovebirds trying to enjoy a romantic meal away from children, and your baby won’t be as tired as if you ate later

TAKE A WHITE NOISE TOY

If you’re baby relies on something day-in, day-out to feel comfortable and content – take it with you. It may be news to you, but so many babies rely on white noise machines or toys to get a good sleep. They really can be a lifesaver when staying somewhere new, with different sounds, sights, smells and temperatures that all send your baby into alert mode. White noise, especially if they are already used to sleeping using it, can block out the sounds you’re making in closer proximity than you’re used to at home, and the noises of other guests on their holiday too.

Some of our #BiliaTribe mothers favourites are the ‘Ewan the Dream Sheep’ and myHummy’s ‘Sleepy Head’ and ‘Snoozy’ – myHummy’s are great for travelling, as they have handy little straps and loops that can be attached to something next to your baby, and aren’t too big – Don’t forget to take extra batteries, or stock up on your first day, just in case!

CHALLENGE YOUR EXPECTATIONS

The most important tip we could give to travelling new parents would be to understand your new routine, and be ready to make some changes to your expectations of what you’re used to in a holiday. There will still be night feeds, naps, and early morning starts, but it will still be a magnificent experience.

Plan way in advance, and give yourself plenty of time at the airport so that you don’t feel rushed, overwhelmed, or stressed. Once you’ve reached your destination, notice how baby changes your perspective, and how much joy you’re getting from watching them enjoy their first holiday with you. You’re life, and the way you holiday may have changed, but what’s most important is the time you’re spending together.

5 IDEAL TIPS FOR GETTING MORE SLEEP AS A NEW PARENT

Did you know that on average, new mother’s get less than 4 hours sleep a night? If you have a newborn and sleep is only a thing you can dream about since your babies arrival, we’re here to help. Neil Robinson, sleep expert at the world’s number one bed brand, Sealy UK, shares with us his 5 IDEAL tips for getting more sleep as a new new parent.

KEEP YOUR BABY CLOSE

For the first six months of their life, it is highly recommended that you keep your baby in the same room as you. Invest in a bedside crib, ideally with a mesh panel so your baby can see you. Specifically designed to allow you and your baby to sleep next to each other, these cribs are particularly useful if you are nursing, allowing you to feed without having to leave the comfort of your bed.

INTRODUCE A BEDTIME ROUTINE EARLY ON

With almost half of UK mums stating that a lack of sleep means they are frequently irritable and short-tempered, it can be helpful to introduce a loose bedtime routine. If you do this from an early stage it can help small babies to recognise the difference between day and night. To accomplish this, buy black-out blinds for their bedrooms, keep lights throughout the house off or dimly lit, speak in low and quiet tones, and keep the same bedtime routine for your baby every day.

Kidsco, who reviews baby night lights, also recommend investing in a dim night light. The night light is really more for you than your baby; you don’t have to turn any bright lights on when you check on the little one, keeping fumbling around in the dark to a minimum, and meaning you have less chance of disturbing their slumber.

POWER EAT

With more than half (65%) of mums with young children having their sleep disturbed on a regular basis, it is often tempting to have a ‘midnight snack’. However, too much refined sugar – found in processed foods or sweets – can in fact prevent you from sleeping well. Instead, try to pick foods containing high levels of sleep-inducing chemicals; serotonin, tryptophan, and melatonin such as bananas, almonds and cherries, to help you drift off to a more relaxed sleep.

SAY NO TO CAFFEINE

We get it; the lure of caffeine is strong when you have small children. But however tempting it may be, indulging in your favourite coffee to help you stay alert during the day can have a negative impact on your sleep. Avoid drinking caffeine after mid-day and switch to drinks such as chamomile tea, or join your little one with a glass of milk – which is rich in sleep-inducing amino acid tryptophan.

REMEMBER – SLEEPLESS NIGHTS WON’T LAST FOREVER

It may feel like there is no light at the end of the tunnel, especially when you are regularly woken up several times a night. During these tough months, focus on self-care, introducing a relaxing bedtime routine for yourself such as: a hot bubble bath, relaxing music and a good book. As well as this, confide in family and friends, as well as expressing any worries via parenting forums and websites. The main thing to remember is that you are not alone, so seek support when you need it.

4 IDEAL REASONS FOR BRANDS TO COLLABORATE WITH INFLUENCERS

At one point in time, the word ‘influencer’ would refer to the likes of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr — people who had a voice to influence the masses for a better change in the world. However, with the advancements in technology and the creation of revolutionary social media platforms, the meaning of that word is now significantly different.

Today’s influencers, from Jim Chapman to Whitney Simmons, are using their online presence to propel messages to millions of people around the globe — and this has created a new trend of marketing. Yep,  forget about television adverts and magazine spreads, promoting your brand through influencer marketing is the way forward. With this in mind we’ve teamed up with Cleveland College of Art and Design who offer a digital design degree that can help creatives run successful campaigns, to bring you 4 IDEAL reasons for brands to collaborate with influencers.

THEY GENERATE SALES

Brands that use influencers to their advantage to promote a product or service will reap the benefits of exposure and likely increase sales.Indeed, research Now found that 84% of consumers make a purchase after reading about a product on a blog. Moreover, according this article from ADWEEK a whopping 40% of people say they’ve purchased an item online after seeing it used by an influencer on social media. It’s a no brainer.

PEOPLE TRUST INFLUENCERS

Everyone knows that people trust the opinions of their friends and family over the messaging of brands. And this is one of the biggest advantages if using influencers as they are right up there with advice from family and friends.  Influencers have established relationships with their followers, stay connected with them everyday and interact with them directly, as such people trust them. According to research carried out by the The Leverage Way almost half of consumers (49%) rely on influencer recommendations when it comes to shopping with a brand.

TARGET AN ESTABLISHED MARKET

Why cause yourself more work than necessary? Influencers already have a large following at their disposal and often share the same demographics and interests as their lackeys. As such, using an influencer marketing company allows you to be specific in terms of targeting an established market.

The targeting process has never been easier than today, thanks to software companies launching influencer marketing platforms such as Humanz, Grin, or Upfluence. These tools have multiple features and filters that make the searching process for the right influencers incredibly simple. Humanz even enables businesses to generate and run the whole campaign right on its platform without transferring your data.

GET AROUND AD-BLOCKS

According to the aforementioned research by Leverage Way, 47% of consumers have an ‘ad-block’ extension enabled when they’re browsing the internet. However, if a customer is already following an influencer, they’re guaranteed to see a post that they share. Interestingly, only 14% of people who did not use an ad-block extension said that they can remember what they saw in an advertisement.

Food for thought, don’t you think?

8 IDEAL TASKS TO DO IN SUMMER FOR A STRESS-FREE CHRISTMAS

It may still be months until festivities will be in full swing but the countdown to Christmas has already begun! And not just since some of the nation are Christmas fanatics but because there are some practical tasks that should be undertaken over the summer to be ready in time for the main event and to avoid serious disappointment!  So get ahead this year. Thi Dinh, Event Director at The Spirit of Christmas Fair, which returns to Olympia London 29th October – 4th November shares her 8 IDEAL tasks to do in summer for a stress-free Christmas.

BOOK FLIGHTS

If you are going to require a flight to get to your Christmas dinner it’s best to book now! Last year 4.5 million Britons flew overseas at Christmas* and with that demand to compete with, it is wise to book your flight in advance to ensure your plans are not compromised because you couldn’t get a seat on the plane!

CHRISTMAS CAKE

How mature you like your Christmas cake comes down to personal taste. Traditionalists would argue it should be made in late summer for optimum flavour. You will need to wrap the cake and store but “feed” with a spirit at regular intervals – roughly every six weeks to keep it moist. Add a couple of tablespoons of alcohol brandy, whisky or bourbon and rewrap the cake to keep it fresh.

GROW YOUR OWN

Green fingered enthusiasts who want to grow their own plants to decorate or gift, need to be planted and cared for from the summer. Poinsettia plants, Christmas cacti and amaryllis bloom are all lovely festive choices that need to be planted now. If you want to grow your own veg too, you are in fact nearly out of time with now being your last chance to get some root vegetables ready in time for your Christmas dinner!

MENTAL GIFT LIST

You might want to save your shopping until nearer the time but if you have a big family or a notoriously difficult partner to buy for, start your mental gift list now. Gifts can get repetitive so if you want to make more thoughtful purchases, start taking notes. Luxury sunglasses that got broken on holiday, birthday gifts that your friends were disappointed they didn’t receive, toys your children were fascinated by at birthday parties earlier in the year – think now and enjoy easy buying later. The Spirit of Christmas Fair offers Christmas shoppers endless inspiration with an unrivalled collection of independent boutiques and designer-makers – there’s 825 to choose from!

CRAFTED GIFTS

Not all Christmas gifts and items are a fast and simple transaction. If you have the creation of a knitted blanket or Christmas jumper in mind, you won’t be the only one and need to make sure you get yourself in an orderly queue. Knitwear has exploded on the festive scene in recent years and if you have plans to commission a hand knitter for something truly personal, ensure you give them ample time to fulfil your order. Large items take time and Christmas will be a peak period where they will be juggling many orders.  And of course, if you’re knitting your own Christmas gifts – best to start sooner rather than later to save you knitting up until midnight on Christmas Eve!

GUEST LIST

Amongst all the lovely Christmas festivities, family politics is one thing we can all live without. Summer is a good time to open conversations about hosting or making invitations whilst there is plenty of time to get organised and discuss plans with various family members and compare numerous diaries, ensuring no one is left behind.

BOOK CHRISTMAS EVENTS

Christmas events attract the masses. If you enjoy the Christmas markets or panto, make sure you book the festivities in now whilst there’s still availability. The UK’s biggest high-end Christmas shopping event, the Spirit of Christmas Fair, is returning to London, Monday 29 October until Sunday 4 November with their widest ever collection, there’s even more to see and do! Ring up your friends, book your tickets and start planning your visit!

MAKE YOUR BEAUTY APPOINTMENTS

There are fewer places more hectic than beauty salons in the weeks before Christmas and during party season. For this reason, hairdressers often urge clients to think ahead and get booked in early for December. In a popular salon there is no capacity for last minute requests during the Christmas countdown. Know your diary and make your Christmas appointment during your summer visit to the salon.

5 IDEAL BEAUTY TRENDS TO TRY THIS SUMMER

Sunglasses on, suntan lotion applied haphazardly, short shorts donned. Hello sunshine, how we’ve missed you! With the gorgeous weather we’re currently having, it feels like finally, summer is creeping into view, the beast from the east returning to hibernate, hopefully forever.

With new seasons come new beauty trends, and a new season offers a great excuse to update your wardrobe and look. Get a head start here with our 5 IDEAL beauty trends to try this summer.

PERMANENT MAKEUP

There’s something special about waking up to a beautiful sunny day and realising you can head out the door without worrying about makeup. Treatments like LV lashes offer innovative technology that curls and tints the lashes, making them stand out and look 10x better than they would with mascara.

Other treatments like microblading can keep your brows looking great day in day out, and lip blush can make your lips look plumper without the need for fillers. If you do decide to opt for fillers, always consult a professional lip fillers clinic before undergoing the procedure.

For something temporary but no less glamorous in appearance, a semi permanent makeup professional can provide excellent results.

GLOSSY SKIN

Glowy, glossy complexions have been seen all over the recent catwalks, and hailed one of 2018’s biggest beauty trends. This look is particularly great for summer’s warmer weather — a time when heavy and cakey makeup is a definite no-go. To achieve the glossy look without going OTT (or accidentally greasy), keep your skin nice and hydrated, stick to foundations with light coverage, and lightly dust highlighting powder over your cheekbones and t-zone for a subtle sheen.

NO-MAKEUP MAKEUP

Similar to glossy skin, no-makeup makeup is a trend that’s perfect for the summer, and can be easily achieved. The term basically means applying makeup in a way that’s subtle enough to look like you’re not wearing any makeup. The trick to this is simple — less is more! Skip your usual foundation and replace with a primer or tinted moisturiser, some dots of concealer here and there, and some translucent powder. Instead of using a blush powder, apply a cream blush with your fingers for a more natural feel. For the eyes, use an eyeshadow in a shade as close to your natural skin tone as possible, and dab a lighter shade in the inner eye area for a brightening look. Tidy up your brows with some clear brow gel, add a coating of mascara, a dash of lip tint, and you’re good to go!

METALLIC EYESHADOWS

Another beauty trend that’s hit 2018 in a big way is metallic eyeshadow. Perfect for those long summer night’s and festivals alike, metallic eyeshadow is a great way to instantly add some glamour to your makeup look. If you’re feeling dramatic, brush a dark grey metallic shade over your whole lid for a striking smokey eye, or opt for a simple metallic champagne shade for a more toned down look.

DIY BEAUTY

As beauty becomes more and more ethical and health conscious, people are getting more fussy about what they’re putting on their skin. To keep your skin in good condition without any big price tags or suspicious chemicals, try making your own DIY beauty treatments. From homemade facemasks to au naturale rose water sprays, you’d be surprised how easy it is to recreate some of your favourite beautifying treatments from the comfort of your home.

4 IDEAL REASONS CHAMPAGNE IS SUITABLE FOR EVERY OCCASION

0

Limiting your champagne drinking for special occasions is like discovering the magic of the Mona Lisa, and then keeping it wrapped up in blankets and only taking a peep at it once a year. The majesty of the Mona Lisa should be on display year-round for the world to see, and the splendour of champagne should be uncorked at every occasion, not just for life’s most significant milestones.

People who only drink champagne at life’s seminal moments are missing out on one of life’s greatest pleasures. Champagne’s fizzy nectar is the ideal accompaniment for a whole host of situations. With this in mind, here are four ideal reasons why champagne is not just for special occasions.

IT ISN’T AS EXPENSIVE AS IT SEEMS

One of the main reasons people deny themselves champagne on a weekly basis is that they often perceive it as an expensive luxury. In reality, champagne doesn’t have to break the bank. Sure, the top brands will set you back, so perhaps reserve the Dom Pérignons for special occasions. There are, however, plenty of brands that offer a rich, full flavour for only a fraction more than a bottle of your favourite red. Moët & Chandon, Louis Roederer, Perrier Jouet, and Veuve Cliquot are all inexpensive options that can be enjoyed without breaking the bank.

IT PAIRS WITH ALMOST ANYTHING

Champagne is a versatile beverage that pairs remarkably well with a whole host of foods, including eggs, mushroom dishes, cheese, pasta, seafood, fish, pork, turkey, fruits, dark chocolate, pizza, barbecue flavoured dishes, spicy dishes, and curries. This means whatever you are putting together for dinner, or lunch, champagne is the perfect accompaniment to your meal.

IT MAKES ANY OCCASION FANCIER

Just because you have discovered the delights of drinking champagne on any occasion doesn’t mean everyone else has. Most people will still associate champagne with a feeling of class and privilege. Serving your favourite bottle of bubbles at your dinner party, friendly get-together, family celebration, or a quiet night in will instantly add a touch of class to the occasion. Just the sound of a bottle being popped is usually enough to get a cheer of excitement from those in attendance. Champagne is always a good idea, and always makes an event fancier, classier, and more enjoyable.

BECAUSE, WHY NOT?

When all is said and done, you don’t need a reason to enjoy a chilled, refreshing glass of champagne. Your own personal enjoyment is reason enough. Life is too short to spend it withholding things you enjoy, and let’s face it, champagne is something we all enjoy.

Whatever your reason for enjoying a glass (or bottle) of champagne, seize the moment and pour yourself a glass. Whether it is to celebrate life’s biggest moments or to bask in the smallest moments, champagne is there to be enjoyed, not to sit on the shelf gathering dust while life passes you by. Enjoy champagne at every occasion.

5 IDEAL TIPS FOR ORGANISING YOUR FAREWELL PARTY BEFORE YOU MOVE

You have lived a fabulous life for the past years and it is time for you to move. Even if you want to stay, there are other opportunities out there. You might also have other reasons for leaving. Before you finally leave, don’t forget to throw a goodbye party. This is your way of saying thank you to all the people who have meant a lot in your life and letting them know that you will remain close to them even if you are moving away. Here are some useful tips so you can throw an amazing party one last time before leaving.

PACK EVERYTHING AHEAD OF TIME

You don’t want to throw a farewell party when you still have a lot of packing to do. You better finish it before you decide to have the party. This takes a lot of time and there are so many details you have to focus on. You better seek help from companies like Movecorp.com if you want to get this over with in no time. They will help you with shipping all your items to any destination. Just make an appointment in advance so you can discuss what services you need.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT PLACE

When you have finished packing, the next step is to choose the best place where you can have the party. Of course, the most practical choice is your old house. This is also symbolic. Your friends might have visited you in this house over the years, so they would also say farewell to your place just as they say farewell to you.

START SPREADING THE WORD

Once you have chosen the place, tell your friends about your plans. Make sure it is after work so that everyone can come. Let them know that it is just a simple gathering to thank them. It is up to you if you want this party to be emotional. You can also make it more fun if you don’t want tears.

PREPARE YOUR SPEECH

Whether or not you love to be the centre of attention, this time, you really are. This party is about you. Therefore, it does not hurt if you prepare a few words. In your speech, don’t forget to say thank you to everyone and let them know how much they mean to you. Give them the assurance that you will stay connected even if you are moving. Wish them success in their future endeavours too in the same way that they wish you all the best.

INDIVIDUALLY THANK THOSE WHO ATTEND

You should say thank you to everyone personally apart from the farewell speech you have already made. You want to let them know that they mean a lot to you and they will always be in your heart.

It is not easy saying goodbye. This party could really be emotional. You have decided to leave though and this is a part of the process. It is better to say farewell now through a party than just leave without saying anything.

7 IDEAL WAYS TO BEAT THE FRIZZ THIS SUMMER

As the days get hotter, all we want to do is get outside and enjoy the sunshine. But we all know what this means for our hair; the dreaded frizz.

Managing unruly, frizz-prone hair in the summer can be a bore. There’s nothing worse that spending hours smoothing and straightening your locks, only to step outside and be hit with a mass of frizz and tangles within minutes.

So, to prevent this from happening and with the help of hair stylist to the stars Asgar Saboo, here’s 5 IDEAL tips to prevent frizz in the humidity this summer.

CONDITIONER IS KEY

Funnily enough, the best way to prevent frizz is with moisture (as if you didn’t know that). If your hair isn’t packed with moisture, the cuticles will open up, letting in the air’s moisture and causing frizz.

When you wash your hair, never skip conditioner. Twice a week, use only conditioner on your hair and no shampoo and once a week use a conditioning mask to ensure maximum moisture and gloss. Avoid shampoos and conditioners that contain sulphates (chemicals used as cleansing agents) as these can strip your hair of it’s natural oils needed to keep your locks healthy.

If you’re a DIY type of girl, homemade hair masks with coconut or banana are the best for controlling frizz.

WASH LESS OFTEN

Not your body, your hair! Don’t let the sweaty heat leave you reaching for the shampoo daily. Washing too often will strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving your locks unprotected, dry and susceptible to frizz. Try to wash your hair only two or three times a week, and only use shampoo on your roots to stop your locks from drying out. Use cold water when washing your hair; not only will this cool you down in the heat, it also helps to seal your pores and keep the moisture in your hair intact.

BEAT THE FRIZZ FROM WITHIN

Eating the right foods will help to strengthen your hair, giving moisture to your locks to prevent frizz. Upping your omega-3 intake in summer will really help your hair survive the humidity. Eat plenty of fish such as salmon and tuna and include superfoods such as flax seeds and acai in your diet.

CARRY A ‘MAGIC WAND’

A great way to tame frizz on the go is to carry a toothbrush in your handbag. Simply spritz the bristles with strong hairspray which you can easily whip out to tame the flyaways. This is the quickest and cheapest way to tame frizz on a hot day!

GENTLE DRY

One major way to prevent frizz is to never disrupt your hair’s cuticle, so you must be gentle! Avoid rough drying your hair all the time with a towel; instead, simply wrap a towel around your locks to gently soak up excess moisture. Frizz begins to form as soon as your locks begin to dry, so make sure to apply serum to the hair before you bow-dry. Only blow dry your hair once your hair has dried naturally to around 90% dry. This will reduce damage and frizz control.

PIN IT UP

One of the simplest ways to beat frizz is to pin your hair up. This means your hair won’t have a chance to frizz as it’ll be held down. hen it’s particularly hot and humid outside, simply take a hair-tie or an Alice band and a few bobby pins and clip your hair into a neat up-do. Give the front a quick spritz with anti-frizz spray and it’ll be perfect all day. For extra frizz protection, cover with a bandana or silk scarf.

OIL REGULARLY

Applying a few daily drops of hair oil will ensure your locks are left nourished and frizz free. Apply a few drops of hair oil to just-washed hair and rub it in to ensure it’s absorbed. Mix a few drops of oil with water in a small spray bottle and spritz into your hair on non-wash days to ensure it stays smooth. Argan oil will work perfectly, sealing your hairs cuticles to protect your locks from external factors such as humidity. Be sure to use a lightweight oil which won’t weigh down your hair’s natural movement

THE BOTTOM LINE

There is no doubt that summer can play havoc with our hair. Remember, frizzy hair needs moisture, and lots of it, to stay smooth and in a pinch, you can even use hand cream to tame your hair. Healthy hair is less likely to frizz, and for just that here’s an article we wrote earlier on 8 IDEAL ways to get strong and healthy hair.

5 IDEAL WAYS TO MAINTAIN HEALTHY SKIN AFTER SUN EXPOSURE

A day in the sun can be a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Whether you are exploring a city during a break, or laying on the beach, the warmth of the sun can make you feel at ease. But exposure to the sun’s rays can leave your skin feeling dry, lacklustre and above all, damaged. Here are 5 ways to look after your skin, following sun exposure to ensure it remains hydrated, soft and healthy.

COOL OFF IN THE SHOWER

Chlorine from swimming pools and salt water from the sea can magnify the sun’s rays and dehydrate skin. By having a cool shower after exposure to water and sun, you can help cool down the skin and help keep it clean.

STAY HYDRATED

Up to 60% of the human adult body is water, so of course it is vital to keep hydrated. Keeping the skin well moistened – particularly when out in the sun is doubly important, particularly when the rays have a drying affect and the heat will cause sweating. Keep yourself topped up with ice cold water to not only keep you refreshed and hydrated, but your skin too.

MOISTURISE

Apply an after-sun lotion or moisturising cream to help lock in layers of moisture into your skin after a drying day in the sun. If you have a minibar in your hotel room, or fridge in your holiday villa, try keeping your after-sun in there for a cooling, refreshing sensation when applying, whilst benefiting from the moisture.

AVOID EXCESSIVE EXFOLIATING

If you missed a spot with the sun cream, some areas of your body may experience some peeling of the skin. However, tempting it may be, it’s important to let the skin peel naturally, and avoid body scrubs or exfoliation mitts that might aggravate the areas and cause soreness.

HAVE A BACKUP PLAN IN CASE OF SUNBURN

Even if you follow careful sun care advice, wearing plenty of sunscreen and avoiding the sun at peak times, sunburn can unfortunately still strike. Soleve Sunburn Relief is useful to have as part of your holiday first aid kit, just in case you do get sunburnt. Soleve is a unique combination of pain relieving ibuprofen, which takes the sting from burnt skin, and the soothing and rehydrating emollient isopropyl myristate to help lock in moisture, reduce skin tightness and minimise any further irritation from clothing. This easy-to-apply, silky smooth lotion should be used at the first sign of sunburn.

Look for Soleve in the Boots or Sainsbury’s sun care aisle (next to sun protection). Alternatively, simply order online by visiting boots.com.

6 IDEAL WAYS TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF YOUR SUMMER SCENT

It might not come as a surprise that the aroma of our fragrances changes with the different seasons. And during the summer you will probably find that your scent fades faster than it would in the colder months. Yep, our perfumes work the worst in the height of summer when we’re probably at our sweaty and smelliest. So to help you smell terrific all summer long, with the help of Leighton Denny MBE, here are 6 IDEAL ways to make the most out of your summer scent.

MAKE SURE YOU’RE HYDRATED

As we all know, drinking plenty of water is important in the summer months. However, did you know that staying hydrated is also helpful when it comes to keeping your skin scented? The oils in our skin help to retain scent molecules, so the more hydrated and oiler the skin, the more intense your fragrance will be and the longer it will last. As such, drinking plenty of water will maintain the production of oil and keep your skin hydrated.

USE AN EMOLLIENT LAYER

All fragrances smell differently on different people, this is because each of us has our own ‘scent print’ that will influence the development of a scent.  Loads of things affect our odour-identity including our diet, medication intake, stress levels and, probably the most important factor of all, the temperature of our skin.

Indeed when it comes to how scents smell, the warmth of our skin is critical. Why? Well some people have more pores per centimetre than others, or more layers of fat in their skin. These and other factors affect the warmth of skin, which in turn influences the scent of a fragrance. The solution? Put an emollient layer between your skin and your perfume – a body oil, cream or moisturiser should increase the staying power of your scent as it will slow down the rate of the fragrance evaporation.

LESS AND OFTEN

Summer heat increases the impact of odour. The hotter the weather, the more rapidly the ‘notes’ of a fragrance will leave the skin. The best way to combat this in hot weather is to apply less fragrance but more frequently.

SPRAY IT RIGHT

Applying scent correctly is the simplest of matters, however many of us do it wrong. Simply spray about 20cm away from your skin. Also, an even spray over a wider area will help your fragrance last longer than a generous amount in a small area. Moreover, avoid rubbing the area after application to prevent ‘crushing’ the scent. Good places to apply include on pulse points (below earlobes and inside elbows) and on shoulders, and back of the neck at the hairline…or anywhere you’d want to be kissed. Oh and a maximum of 4 sprays is the optimum amount.

SPRITZ ON CLOTHES

In the warm weather, perspiration can cause your scent to disappear faster as it will mix and evaporate along with it. As such, spritzing on clothes is one way of keeping your scent around a little longer. Once dressed spray fragrance into the air and walk into it – this will create an even dusting of fragrance, which is better than spraying directly on clothes.

NEVER KEEP FRAGRANCES IN THE SUN

And lastly – heat, light and humidity all play a part in breaking down your perfume’s powers over time. Any fragrance that is kept out of its box and sat in direct sunlight isn’t going to last more than a few months at most. If it gets hot then cold frequently it will sweat, and condensation can get into the juice, the scent will go cloudy, and you can say RIP to your EDP.

4 IDEAL ACTIONS TO TAKE AFTER A TRAUMATIC ACCIDENT

Going through a traumatic accident can be life-changing with potentially long-lasting implications. It isn’t always an easy thing to deal with, especially in the case that it happens to be a relatively serious accident. There are so many emotions you may feel afterward associated with the shock of what happened, so it’s important to take care of yourself and take the vital steps so that you can move past it and move on from it as best you can. However, there are key things that you can do to make recovery easier and the situation easier to manage. Here’s 4 IDEAL actions to take after a traumatic accident.

EMOTIONALLY PROCESS IT

After an accident, whether you have been involved or not, there will be aspects to emotionally process and think about. You will either be processing your own emotions and negative feelings about what has occurred, or will be caring or looking after somebody who themselves has suffered. Regardless of what situation applies to you, you may find your priorities and perspective will change slightly, and it’s vital to emotionally process what has occurred so that you can move on from it in the right way and not be dragged down by it.

SEEK LEGAL ADVICE

As Duffy and Duffy, a Long Island brain injury attorney tells us, depending on the type of accident that’s happened, you might find that you need to take further action and seek legal advice. This will most certainly be the case if the accident was particularly traumatic or life-changing, and is one that will have a significant impact on your lifestyle from now on. Indeed, there wll be financial and emotional concerns to come to terms with, as well as physical implications and potential strains on the mental health of those involved.

The emotional upheaval of going through a life-changing accident, particularly if it has caused pain or injury to a loved one or child, can impact a family for years. If you find yourself in a situation where you need to seek legal expertise, then legal aid might be available. The weight will be lifted off your shoulders when you share your problems and seek help in resolving a solution.

GET ENOUGH REST

After all of the technical things have been taken care of, the next tip for coping after an accident is actually taking time out to rest. Rest is an essential part of your healing process, so getting enough is critical. If you need to have loved ones around to help with daily responsibilities, then find a way to do so.

Other tips for getting rest after an injury include not doing strenuous activities, eating nourishing foods, and taking a break from work until you’re fully recovered. If you’re having trouble sleeping, try winding down before bed by taking a warm bath, listening to relaxing music, or making your bedroom sleep-friendly by creating a comforting ambience.

TAKE A BREAK

After an accident, taking a break and ensuring you have time to de-stress and look after yourself will help you to process what you have gone through, or what a loved one has gone through. If you yourself are recovering from an accident, time off work to recover is essential, and even if you weren’t involved, you will need to process the emotional trauma yourself.

People at your work should be understanding, so don’t feel guilty about taking time off if you need it. You will be more productive if you have had some time to process what has happened, and you may be able to request additional leave if necessary. Don’t feel guilty for needing time off. The shock of a traumatic accident may take longer to come to terms with than you realise, so be sure to be open about your feelings, and give yourself time.

The jury’s out on whether it’s working for them.

While unlike Gwyneth Paltrow we don’t think that inserting a jade egg into your private parts to cleanse the womb space is a good idea, there’s something to be said about the transformative effect of wearing healing jewellery. Although scientifically speaking there is no evidence that crystals and the like can actually cure ailments, they are thought to have a placebo effect and as such, have the ability to enhance your life in sometimes unexpected ways.
