RESTAURANT REVIEW: ITACA LOUNGE, PHU QUOC – THE IDEAL PLACE FOR CHILLED OUT VIBES AND GREAT FOOD

itaca phu quoc

*Permanently closed

Phu Quoc, Vietnam. A beautiful, serene paradise which year on year is attracting more intrepid travellers and sunshine/seafood hungry Viets alike. It’s only natural that a collection of new, internationally focused places have popped up all over the island. Itaca though, one of the most visited restaurants on the island, offers real-deal, Spanish cuisine, making others appear cheap imitations in comparison.

Idea

Catalan chic and hospitality is at the heart of Itaca. Strut into a candlelit front garden, smooth grooves soundtracking your entrance, and you’re immediately welcomed with a warm, gracious greeting.

To say we were transported straight to Spain would do a disservice to the wonder of the island of Phu Quoc, but Itaca manages to stay both true to the traditions of Spain and celebrate flourishes of southern Vietnamese décor and ingredients. What you’ll certainly feel on arrival, wherever you’re from, is very much at home.

Location

Itaca is nestled slightly back from the busy, focal point of Phu Quoc, Tran Hung Dao street, which is home to many of the island’s resorts and restaurants. The low-lighting and attention to creating escapist vibes render it unassuming from the road, so look out for the black and white sign.

Atmosphere

The focus of the restaurant, as much as the fantastic food, is the vibe – chilled out, calming and extremely sociable with stylish decor to match. There is the opportunity both for intimacy – cosy candlelit corners to enjoy wine and the whispering of sweet nothings, and for larger groups – big, spacious tables, lounging sofas and plates made for sharing. It’s obvious why Itaca is a popular nightlife spot.

Food

Tapas are the focus and we were flown straight to the bouqerias of Barcelona with our first bite of pan con tomate and tortilla. Everything was clean and fresh, yet hearty, and super authentic. A round of seafood plates brought home the similarities between the country of Itaca’s residence and of its influence. Spanish and Vietnamese shellfish dishes both pay respect to the ingredient, with little needed in the way of adornment when the product is so fresh.

Chili, garlic and a liberal use of butter lifted the prawn offering. The crispy noodle ribbons that topped this dish gave a polite nod to Vietnam and were perfect for soaking up the garlicky sauce the prawns were swimming in – an inspired touch. Fresh as-you-like, the Andulasian style deep fried squid is a dish not to be missed.

itaca phu quoc

Desserts paid homage to the regional, iconic crème Catuluna, and was a fine rendition. A chocolate lava cake satisfied the craving for dark, rich indulgence that one often finds themselves suffering from when in South-East Asia.

Must try

As we’ve already waxed lyrical about the fresh, gorgeous fish options, the goat’s cheese, filo pastry and honey dressing deserves a shout out. So often in this part of the world, cheese is impossible to distinguish from plastic, but this dish used a strong, assertive, bloody delicious goat’s to glorious effect. The sweetness of honey and light, crisp crunch of filo pastry complemented it beautifully.

Drink

It would be rude not to opt for Sangria in a place like this, and the famous Spanish drink was refreshing and pleasingly boozy. Cocktails, beers and a short but carefully curated wine list completed the package.

Itaca’s ambience lends itself to a few beverages, and we stuck around after the meal to enjoy them in the tranquility of their plush garden sofas.

Why go

In an ambience of cool, cosy calm, you will find Itaca. Whether your desire is for a romantic meal with your loved one or a sociable gathering with friends and family, this place will cater for you with grace and charm. If you thought it difficult to find authentic tapas on a Vietnamese paradise island, think again, we’ve found it.

4 IDEAL TYPES OF GIFT CARDS TO GIVE AS A WEDDING PRESENT

It’s summer-wedding season, the time of year when you’re on the hunt for the perfect wedding gift. However, when it comes to purchasing the ideal present,  it isn’t always a straightforward task. Sure the couple may have a wedding gift registry, but if you don’t get in there quick enough you’re either left with the most expensive items on the list or the most crappy ones, both of which will show that you’ve left the present buying to the last minute.

What’s more, forgoing the registry and going off-list can lead to all sorts of problems – what if they don’t like the gift? How do you strike the balance between practical but not pedestrian? Or affordable but not cheap? And what if they already have the item? The answer? Gift cards

Now before you roll those eyes and start looking elsewhere for wedding gift ideas, bear with us. We know you probably think of gift cards as a lazy option, something that you only give distant relatives and a gesture that’s too impersonal and not thoughtful at all. Well, think again. Gift cards come in all shapes and forms and can actually add value to the couples life, create memories and be useful to them. Don’t believe us, then here are 4 IDEAL types of gift cards to give as a wedding present which may change your mind.

TRADITIONAL GIFT CARDS

These have been around for years, just cast your mind back to the gift cards you use to get in your stocking from Waterstones and WHSmith and you’ll soon remember. Well, these still exist and are doing rather well in fact. Traditional gift cards give the opportunity for the bride and groom to splash out on something they really want. Think a John Lewis Gift card, allowing them to choose from a range of items for their home.

Indeed, a traditional gift card gives the couple an option to put money towards an expensive item they may want, but didn’t put on the guest list as it was too much money. Moreover, couples often select gifts they don’t necessarily need on a registry, just because it was in store and the only option. However, a gift card allows them to wait and buy something else they desire later on that wasn’t available at the time of the wedding.

For happy couples with climate conscientious credentials, or if you’re sending from afar, consider UK based, group e cards, that exist purely in digital format, helping save on waste paper.

RESTAURANT GIFT CARDS

If you’re looking to give a tasteful wedding gift, then consider a restaurant gift card. We all love a meal out. A free meal out, though, has an even more indulgent feel; there’s not many better feelings than eating and drinking to your heart’s content safe in the knowledge that you won’t be settling the bill at the end.

A restaurant gift card then, is a great gift for gourmands, and can be personalised by choosing somewhere you know has real meaning to the couple; maybe the place where they had their first date, for instance? Make the evening even more special by enlisting the help of the restaurant’s chefs to write a personal message of congratulations on the dessert plate!

Alternatively, if the restaurant you have in mind doesn’t do gift cards, you could give an EFTPOS gift card as a present, which are now accepted in most restaurants. The perfect eftpos gift card for such use would ideally be loaded with around £100, covering a fairly high-end meal without absolutely breaking the bank!

TRAVEL GIFT CARDS

Modern couples absolutely adore travel gift cards as they can be redeemed against experiences that really do last a lifetime. You can choose one that simply gives a discount against any type of holiday or perhaps you would prefer to choose a bespoke travel gift card that actually helps the modern couple plan there their holidays, or even their honeymoon!

EXPERIENCE GIFT CARD

Speaking of experiences, why not give them an experience gift card that they can use after the honeymoon, so they have something to look forward to after all the wedding celebrations are done and dusted. This could be anything from an afternoon tea to paint balling to an hot air balloon experience. Do the couple love to cook? Send the newly weds your best wishes by giving them the skills to cook tasty dishes, with a gift card for cooking classes.

Make sure you couch the gift in words which don’t offend; you don’t want to say their cooking isn’t up the scratch! In all seriousness though, it’s a great couple’s activity and will benefit them for the rest of their life together. The couple who cooks together, stays together, after all.

4 IDEAL THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING BIFOLD DOORS

Are you looking to introduce more light and bring a sense of the outdoors into your home? Then you’ve probably considered a wall of folding doors and if you haven’t, then you should.

Bifold doors not only fill a room with natural light, making it feel bigger, brighter and more beautiful, they effortlessly blur the break between your inside and outdoor space. This house-to-garden connection is ideal for the warmer months, allowing summer hospitality to spill out from the home and into the garden. Whereas in the winter, when it’s dark and gloomy and your confined to the four walls of your home, bifold doors are a superb way to bring the outdoors in, letting that much needed natural light flow into your property.

While, it’s easy to see the appeal of bifold doors, there are some elements you need to think about before installing them. With this in mind, here are 4 IDEAL things to consider before buying bifold doors.

THE MATERIAL

The choice of material for bifold doors is usually between timber or aluminium. Timber has a traditional look which can seemingly make the material more appropriate for use on a period property, should your residence be one. However, timber’s pleasing appearance depends on regular maintenance without which the wood could rot, as cautioned on the Real Homes site.

Providers of sustainable timber windows and doors, Bereco, comments on the options available when it comes to timber bifolding doors: “By maximising the opening area with their folding door leaf design, timber folding doors make a feature of both your living space and outdoor area. When it comes to rear extensions, garden rooms and open plan living/dining spaces, a folding door can completely open up the back of your home and has become a very popular way to make the best use of living space.’

Bifold doors can be designed in different pane numbers and can span up to ten metres. You also have the option of being able to open one door as a single leaf door if you want to gain access without opening up the whole expanse.

With aluminium doors, on the other hand, upkeep efforts on your part can be almost entirely unnecessary. Furthermore, various colours and finishes are available for frames of aluminium doors making it more of an innovative, modern design statement.

Consider the example of bi fold doors available from the Gloucestershire-based company Bifold Shop. When ordering aluminium doors from this company, you can choose from 200 different colours.

DURABILITY

How long they last can largely depend on not just the material that is chosen for those doors but also your own maintenance efforts. If you opt for aluminium doors, those will feature a powder-coated finish that never needs re-coating, says Homebuilding & Renovating.

And if you are do notice a visual deterioration in your doors, a fix is fairly easy; a simple aluminum restoration cleaning solution can be found on the high-street, and works well at restoring your doors to their former glory.

However, it’s a more complicated situation if you choose wooden doors instead. To maintain their look, you will need to have these doors regularly painted or varnished. This obligation might count against you ultimately selecting wood for your bifold doors.

SECURITY

You shouldn’t purchase particular bifold doors unless they meet certain security criteria. That should include, on main doors, a multi-point locking system and, on folding doors, shoot bolt locks. If your doors don’t feature locks of this type, someone could break into your home by smashing the window and so allowing themselves to entirely open the door.

ADDED VALUE

If you’re wondering if bifold doors will add value to your home, the answer is a definite “yes”! Bifold doors have become trendy features of homes. Buyers who see the doors when viewing your home could be impressed by how much sunlight they allow to enter the property. After all, this can save the homeowner much financial expenditure on electricity for their home’s lighting.

8 IDEAL WAYS TO GET STRONG AND HEALTHY HAIR

Do you ever get hair envy when you watch those shampoo adverts. You know, where the girls have silky, smooth hair that is so voluminous you consider a weave just so you can achieve the same look? Indeed, getting strong and luxurious hair like the girls in the ads can seem like an insurmountable task without paying out a fortune on hair extensions, treatments or blow drys. However, it doesn’t have to be this way. There are some simple habits you can follow to achieve luscious locks without spending a fortune. With this in mind, here are 8 IDEAL ways to get strong and healthy hair.

CHOOSE A HIGH QUALITY SHAMPOO

Choosing the correct type of shampoo is essential to the health of your hair. If you’ve been using the same type of shampoo for many years, you should consider making a change. The condition of your scalp and hair can change as you get older so it’s a good idea to try and keep track of what products work for you. You can find shampoo formulas that are designed for different hair textures and scalp conditions. If you’re not sure what type of hair you have, schedule a consultation with a hairdresser who can evaluate your scalp and hair strands.

CONDITION YOUR HAIR FREQUENTLY

Moisturize your hair with a conditioning product several times a week. If you have an oily scalp, then buy a light conditioner that prevents flyaway hair that is frizzy. When you have dry hair, you should find a conditioner that has additional emollients to keep your hair strands from breaking. Only apply the conditioner to the ends of your hair to avoid a greasy scalp.

GET REGULAR HAIRCUTS

Visit your favourite beauty salon or day spa regularly to get a haircut that will improve the condition of your hair. A professional hairdresser understands how to trim your hair properly so that the ends of your hair strands remain in place and look attractive. It’s important to remember that hair strands don’t all grow at the same rate, so to look your best it’s wise to go for a haircut every four to twelve weeks, depending on your hairstyle. Don’t want to change your current look? Ask your hairdresser for a trim or a dusting to keep your hair from looking unkempt.

EAT A HIGH PROTEIN DIET

What you eat will affect the quality of your hair, so you should make sure to follow a well-rounded diet plan. Adding more protein to your diet can help you to have healthier, stronger hair. And while meats such as pork, chicken and beef contain a lot of protein, you can also eat other foods like cheese, broccoli or nuts to ingest additional protein. You can also have scrambled eggs for breakfast and eat snacks like almonds instead of, for example, potato chips.

EXFOLIATE YOUR SCALP ON A REGULAR BASIS

You should exfoliate your scalp to remove dry skin tissue and excess sebum that is blocking the hair follicles. Unchecked sebum can lead to greasy hair or scalp acne. Exfoliating your scalp requires using special products that contain granules to rub away the sebum and skin flakes. Apply an exfoliating product to your scalp once a week before washing and conditioning your hair. With regular exfoliation, you’ll have new hair growth that is stronger and healthier.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT HAIRBRUSH

If you have an old hairbrush, than replace it. The materials in an older hairbrush eventually degrade, leading to contamination from chemicals that can damage your scalp and hair strands. There are different shapes of hairbrushes and different types of bristles, some bristles are made from natural substances while others are man-made. After buying a new hairbrush, make sure to keep it clean by washing it once a week with shampoo and warm water.

TAKE DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS

In addition to consuming a nutritious diet, vitamin and mineral supplements will also improve the condition of your hair. Look for high quality dietary supplements that contain iron, zinc and vitamin B. You can even find dietary supplements specifically formulated for the scalp and hair at local and online pharmacies. Make sure to take them according to the directions on the label, and within a few weeks you should notice that your new hair strands are stronger.

DRINK A LOT OF WATER

When you are dehydrated, your body stops sending moisture to your scalp and hair, leading to brittle hair strands and an itchy scalp. Drinking more water every day will help keep your body properly hydrated, which in turn allows for your hair strands to grow soft and stay well-nourished. Try to drink a minimum of eight glasses of water each day to add moisture to the skin of your scalp. If you’re an active person, you will likely need more water to prevent dehydration.

4 IDEAL TIPS FOR NAVIGATING ONLINE REVIEWS

In the current cultural climate of news deemed fake, people two faced and facts so often misplaced, the world of online reviews has gotten seriously confusing. Once upon a time, in the not too distant past, a review would only appear, weekly, in a trusted print publication, penned by a paid expert and as such carrying a certain authority. But now we have to negotiate the minefield of budding journalistic layman, robot reviewers and unscrupulous business rivals, all purveyors of flawed, fictitious feedback and writing with their own agenda – not the public interest – in mind.

It’s true though, that for better or worse, online reviews play a huge part in shopping in the wily old world wide web. According to recent research, 91% people regularly or often read online reviews. Quantity, and reach, therefore, isn’t the issue. Moreover, a whopping 84% of people trust an online review as much as a personal recommendation. There, it seems, is where the problem lies. And lie, here, is the operative word. Well, we’re here to help, with these 4 IDEAL tips for navigating online reviews.

DON’T GET FOOLED

Obvious, we know, and this article by Buzzfeed on 19 reasons you should always read the damn reviews says it all. But in all seriousness, it’s all too easy to have the wool pulled over your eyes, and before you know it you’ve bought a piece of stewing lamb, not the bargain cashmere sweater you were hoping for. Too many times we’ve heard of people buying miniature deck chairs or doll clothes  on ebay, with the belief that they were big enough for humans. Oh and did you hear about that fake restaurant that became London’s hottest restaurant on Tripadvisor? There are some rouge sellers out there, no doubt, who sell items that don’t actually exist. Be super vigilant, and always have the danger of disappointment in mind…..

LEARN HOW TO SPOT A FAKE REVIEWER

Be wary of stella reviews that go into loads of detail, enthusing adjectives and exaggeration dripping over every syllable. There could well be written by a paid reviewer behind it, helping to boost business. It’s equally important to approach scathing reviews with a level of suspicion too, as they could be written by a competitor with an ulterior motive in mind.  If the review is purely negative or positive with absolutely no caveats then alarm bells should sound. Indeed a review history with just unwavering positivity or pure bile could indicate a troll account. Other red flags include; no review history or a newly created and anonymous accounts. Also, always look out for verified purchasers who paid money for the item in question as some dubious companies give out freebies in return for glowing feedback.

BROADEN YOUR RESEARCH

When buying a property, the mantra to follow is ‘location, location, location’ Well, when shopping online, it’s ‘research, research, research’. You should look far beyond the reviews you find on the description pages of the site you’re shopping. Anything listed as a testimonial, for instance, is best avoided. Think of yourself as an online shopping detective. Although all that detective work may take some time, you could potentially be saving yourself time and money in the long run.

Whether you’re checking a review of a restaurant or looking at online gaming reviews always look for feedback across a number of sources, such as Trustpilot, Feefo or Sitejabber, which aggregate customer reviews. If you found the reviews helpful, return the favour and leave an honest and accurate review for other people – it could also save them some time, money and possible anger in the long run.

TAKE ONLINE REVIEWS WITH A PINCH OF SALT

We know that a lot of online reviews are from fake bots or just written by angry, disgruntled, or simply having a bad day, people, therefore can be tricky to navigate. Indeed, online reviews should be read with a pinch of salt, especially when it comes to restaurant reviews. Be cautious, be vigilant and be thorough and you’re more likely to end up with an item you’re happy with.

IDEAL BENEFITS OF CARDIO TRAINING

3 IDEAL TIPS FOR PERFECTING THE GOTHIC LOOK

RESTAURANT REVIEW: PEPPERCORN BEACHFRONT RESTAURANT, PHU QUOC -THE IDEAL FAMILY RUN RESTAURANT

Forget the bible-length tomes of international juggernaut resorts. Ignore the team of international chefs manning the kitchen of skyline troubling hotels down the road. For us there’s nothing better than a short, snappy menu of deliciously fresh fish cooked to order by the family who own the resort. Hello, Peppercorn Beachfront Restaurant!

Idea

Housed in the secluded, beautiful, most northerly resort of the island, Peppercorn Beach, the restaurant is run by an aunt of the family run affair. This does not make it feel budget or cobbled together though – quite the opposite in fact. It gives a clarity and synergy to the welcoming, feel-at-home vibe of the place. What’s more, she can cook, and with nature’s bounty just a stone’s skim away, this all adds up to a recipe for a great dinner (or lunch, or both…we just couldn’t resist!).

Location

The charming restaurant overlooks the swimming pool, especially pretty at night with mystical purple under lighting, and further beyond to the sea. To have your fish supper sound tracked by the sea is to have the stars align – just lovely.

Atmosphere

There’s a laid back feel to proceedings, as you’d expect from its location. You can chat and socialise with staff and fellow guests as much or as little as you please – there’s room for both. A decent selection of music plays throughout the day and service is friendly and efficient.

Food

For a menu to be refreshingly short and still be spoilt for choice speaks volumes. For us, brief equals fresh and confident. It’s dominated by fish, as it rightly should be, with a few international options for the seafood and spice weary traveller. Local fish sauce and peppercorns, of which the island is so famed, is utilised well and often. A specials board keeps things interesting and dynamic – another nice touch.

We tried a variety of gorgeous dishes but if pushed, highlights included; scallops served in their shell cooked over coals, the smoky flavor very much imparted but not overwhelming the fresh sweetness of the shellfish. Also, the grilled local fish (we assume dependent on the catch) with tomato dressing was generous and perfectly seasoned. Squid was also done brilliant – a gem of the surrounding seas treated with respect.

They also import Australian beef, the product on the island tends to be water buffalo, and the superior quality shone through in the chili beef we enjoyed.

Drink

There’s a fair wine list, with Vietnamese and Australian offerings paying homage to the roots of the family running the resort, as well as some more classical offerings. A happy hour each day offers a complimentary cocktail for guests of the resort which riffs on tropical fruits and all the better for it. We highly recommend the espresso martini which uses the resorts secret coffee blend – it will be the best one you’ll ever have.

Must Try

Genuinely, we would recommend anything from the surrounding seas and on the Vietnamese side of the menu, as it makes the most of the restaurant’s location and chef’s origins – a perfect harmony.

Need To Know

The restaurant is open to everyone and gets extremely busy during high seasons so book your table in advance. For guests of the resort, the menu is designed for a five night stay, however if you fancy trying something just put in a request the day before.

Why Go

The food is great, I’m sure you get the picture. You can watch the sea as you dine, we’re sure you’ve got that too. But more than that, there’s a warmth and welcome that only a family run, independent place can evoke, which just raises the experience higher. We loved this place, and given the chance, I’m sure you will too.

6 IDEAL IDEAS ON WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR UNWANTED ENGAGEMENT RING

Engagement ring for sale. Could there be a bleaker quadruplet quote? Following the news that Meghan Markle (or should we now say the Duchess of Sussex, Countess of Dumbarton or Baroness Kilkeel?) posted her engagement ring back to her ex, F.Hinds have asked the great British public, whether spurned or newly itemised, on what they decided to do with their unwanted engagement rings.

Whether you want to call time on the timely reminder of a failed romance, or simply want some pocket money, here are 6 IDEAL tips on what to do with your unwanted engagement ring.

GIVE IT BACK

Follow in the shoes of Meghan’s grace and class (or should that read cold heartedness? we’re not so sure) and simply return the ring to sender. It’s either going to be viewed as an act of common decency to give it back or it’s going to feel really vengeful, and lift a weight from your shoulders. Either way, it’s a royally approved method. Result!

THROW IT AWAY

Symbolic, sure, but sometimes we need that sense of closure that such moments grant. Did you go through a messy divorce? Then a cinematic throwing it into an ocean could be the answer. While we think there’s probably enough waste in the ocean already, it’s certainly a dramatic way to rid yourself of the unwanted ring. In the survey,15% of people said they would destroy their unwanted engagement ring, so you’re certainly not alone if you choose the dramatic conclusion. Or, be a good citizen and recycle. It’s up to you.

KEEP & CHANGE IT

Consider keeping your engagement ring as a memento, even if it’s one which brings memories sometimes tough to confront. Indeed, 36% of people surveyed would keep their engagement ring. Even if the marriage didn’t last, the ring still symbolizes a chapter in your life, which at one point must have been a happy one, and there’s nothing wrong with being sentimental from time to time. While you probably won’t wear it on your finger again, a repurposing into an entirely new piece of jewellery may give it – and yours – new life and meaning.

SELL IT

At the time of F.Hinds’ study, a whopping 5885 used engagement rings were for sale on eBay. Indeed, the research revealed that 42% of brutal Brits wouldn’t hesitate to put their ring up for sale online following a separation or divorce. And really, who can blame them?

USE IT AGAIN

The study revealed that 7% of thrifty fiancés in the UK admit that they would re-use the ring. If your new partner has no problem with using the piece again, we say why not? Alternatively, you could simply not divulge the piece’s history and hope for the best. More seriously, you could consider resetting the stone to give it a new personality. However, bear in mind that this ring was from a relationship that didn’t work out – if you’re the superstitious type this may not not be a good idea for you.

DONATE IT

Instead of letting your unwanted engagement ring languish at the bottom of your jewellery box, why not donate your ring to a charity of your choice? A simple act of generosity and one which will give you the closure you need, too.

THE IDEAL VENUES IN LIVERPOOL FOR YOUR NEXT DATE

Ask anyone on the streets of Liverpool what they think of their city now and where it’s headed, and you’ll find no shortage of cheerful sentiments reflecting a youthful, energetic city on the up. Long associated with industrial decline, the last decade has seen an undeniable resurgence of the original city of music as a place to be; one filled with idealistic, creative young people and a buzz that’s hard to come by anywhere else in the U.K. Aside from the fact that the vaunted travel bible Rough Guides recently proclaimed a night out in Liverpool as number two in their annual list of the top things to do before you die, there has also been a proliferation of dining, arts and nightlife venues in the city that hasn’t gone unnoticed by cultural commentators and foodies the world over.

The phoenix-like reinvention of the city as an uber-hip place to drink, dance and be merry, as well as the youthful population from both the U.K. and beyond means that when it comes to cities to go on a date, you’d be hard-pressed to find somewhere better than Liverpool. And as such, there’s no shortage of world-class spots to hit up on your next date. Choosing the right place can be a challenge, so with that in mind, here are the IDEAL venues in Liverpool for your next date.

EAT

Choosing a spot to eat in Liverpool can sometimes seem like a Herculean task, almost on par with matching up with the right person for the evening, given the dizzying choice of almost 2000 restaurants in the city. While the sheer variety of venues on offer is a big plus, one of the best things about dating in Liverpool is the people (the most vital part of the whole dating equation, right?) who also happen to be a diverse, fun and attractive bunch. Once you’ve settled on a date and a date for that date (geddit), it’s time to pick the eatery whose dinner will be so romantic you’ll be enjoying breakfast there, too.

Liverpool’s food scene has a restaurant to cater to everyone’s specific need. Whatever your preferred vibe, taste and price tag, there’s guaranteed to be the perfect venue for you. Although some people might baulk at the idea of taking a first date for a messy burrito, Lucha Libre on Wood St. manages to bridge that difficult gap between dirty Mexican and intimate venue; after all, we want a bit of both in a partner, too. Get cosy in a candlelit booth and order up some of their inventive Mexican tapas dishes such as their lamb burria, pomegranate-dusted ceviche or their famously addictive achiote prawns.

For something which sings special while still maintaining that laid back vibe conducive to great conversation, try your best to book a table at the now nationally acclaimed Brit-fusion restaurant Wreckfish; a beautiful, airy ‘bistro’ over on Slater St, which has recently raised the bar of the food scene here and is the place to go if you’re looking to wow your date. Get the conversation started over a glass or two from their organic wine menu, then dive in to some of their coffee-roasted lamb rump or miso-glazed parsnip. Fill any awkward silences by watching the dextrous chefs dishing up theatre in the open-air kitchen. Oh, and be sure to follow the owner Gary Usher over on Twitter; outspoken, controversial, but whose heart it seems, is very much in the right place.

If you’re wanting an old-school, classic upscale spot to properly wine and dine your love interest, then you could do much worse than whisking them up to Panoramic 34 at the top of the tallest building in the city for traditional French fare and jaw-dropping views. This place is a local institution, and while their menu hasn’t changed much as trends and tropes have in the country’s culinary landscape, classics are just that for a reason. The real aphrodisiac here is the view, and if you time it just right, you can be enjoying dessert just as the sun sets over the River Mersey; a surefire guarantee of further romance to come.

DRINK

Once you’ve wined and dined but the date hasn’t gone on long enough for a ‘your place or mine’, Liverpool has a wealth of bars to keep the night going. If the weather is good and you’re after something a little leftfield, make sure to hit up the achingly hip Kazimier Garden on Seel St. Once part of the legendary Kazimier nightclub, today just the outdoor area remains, but it’s the perfect place for a before or after-dinner drink. Complete with fairy lights, old train carriages and expertly-crafted cocktails, “the Kaz” is the ideal place to snuggle into a cosy corner with a martini or, if you’re feeling more chilled out, a can of Red Stripe, and get to know your date.

For a great mid-range option, you can’t do much better than the hugely popular Berry & Rye on of course, Berry St. The drawback of this place is that it’s so beloved of tourists and locals that you’ll have to make a reservation if you want to get a seat, but should you be blessed enough to bag one of their luxurious and sprawling booths, then sparks will fly. And if they don’t, well he or she probably isn’t worth the effort anyway. Their menu is curated by experts and constantly changing, but if you’re in town during the spring or summer months, make you take yourselves to the “Dark Side”, a cocktail containing an intoxicating blend of Pierre Ferrand Ambre Cognac, dark chocolate liqueur, orange bitters and Lazzaroni dry marsala. Just one of these will give you all the dutch courage you need to take your chat to the charming level.

As firm believers in the romantic powers of a good view, we think you can’t top the vista from the elegant champagne terrace atop the Carpathia Hotel. This historic hotel oozes old world decadence and is an unbeatable spot to take in the art-deco Three Graces buildings in all their lit-up evening splendour while you and your date flirt over a couple of their famous White Star martinis, a nod to the building’s close associations with the RMS Titanic. Luckily, after a couple of those your date should definitely end better than that ill-fated voyage!

DANCE

We could round off this article with suggestions for picnics in the park, quirky art galleries, or even a romantic boat ride, but let’s face it, you’re in Liverpool, so best do as the locals do, put on your dancing shoes and party the night away. The nightlife in Liverpool is a force to be reckoned with, and rather getting messy and torpedoing it all with your worst drunken Macarena routine, you’ll find nightlife spots which are raw, inclusive and full of people who are there to dance and be free. To feel the best of this free-spirited atmosphere, head to the acclaimed Invisible Wind Factory, a sprawling industrial spot in the Baltic Triangle which plays host to some of the best DJ bookings in Europe.

For some classic Scouse fun at a legendary venue where many-a-romance is born, it’s all about the Heebie Jeebies on Seel St. While this place has a somewhat deserved reputation as a raucous, sticky and sweaty spot for boozed up students on Thursdays and Saturdays, every other night of the week tends to be a whole lot more chill. Plenty of famous DJs cut their teeth here, and it’s a place you’re guaranteed to find some tunes to suit both you and your date’s tastes. When you’re ready for a breather and little bit of conversation (and maybe something more), head out to the atmospheric courtyard for some banter. Although not the most conventional spot for a date, this place captures the essence of Liverpool perfectly and is the ideal spot for letting your guard down.

For somewhere relaxed to wind the night down, check out Keith’s Wine Bar over on Lark Lane, where you can rock up in the wee hours and relax in this unpretentious, well-stocked and affordable winery.

And there you have it, our end of the bargain sorted. Now, over to you…

5 IDEAL PLACES TO VISIT IN THE SOUTH OF SPAIN

5 IDEAL PLACES TO VISIT IN THE SOUTH OF SPAIN

If you’re planning a bucket list trip to beat them all in the near future, then you could a lot worse than considering Andalusia, Spain. The region is one of great variety, diversity and intrigue, with typical Spanish fiestas and tradition mixed with Moorish architecture and moreish cuisine. All of this adds up to a place which leaves a lasting impression on all who visit. So, here are 5 IDEAL places to visit in the South of Spain.

SEVILLE

The largest city in Andalusia, Seville was voted the number one city to visit in 2018 by no less an authority than Lonely Planet magazine. This is a cosy city bisected by the Guadalquivir river, Spain’s only navigable river. On dry land you’ll find attractions such as the Real Alcazar de Sevilla, one of the oldest palaces in all of Europe. Seville’s Cathedral is another must visit piece of architecture, and is Europe’s oldest Gothic cathedral. Because of its relatively small size, Seville is easy to traverse on foot, and as such, a tapas tour of local eateries serving the region’s famous boquerones and cazon en abodo (white anchoves, and fried dog fish), is a must. Catch – or get involved in – a flamenco show to cap off a great day in the city.

RONDA

The ancient city of Ronda is one of the most visually stunning you’ll find anywhere in the world. The three bridges which link sections of this mountain city appear to have been hewn directly from the rocky surrounds and closely resemble a fantastical vista akin to one found in Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones sagas. Simply majestic.

The remains of prehistoric settlements have been unearthed in the region nearby, but the city itself was first occupied by the Celts back in the sixth century BC. Control of Ronda has changed hands many, many times since then, with different civilisations adding distinct layers to the character of this magical city. Take the winding journey to this city above the clouds to enjoy the breath-taking views and fairytale appeal unique to Ronda.

ESTEPONA

Undoubtedly the most picturesque town on the over-touristed Costa del Sol, Estepona should be included on any trip to the South of Spain. This town, with a population of around 70,000, manages the difficult feat of retaining its traditional Spanish heart whilst at the same time catering for the tens of thousands of tourists who visit every year. Although Estepona can accurately be referred to as a resort town (and does indeed boast many kilometres of beaches) by walking just a few paces away from the coastal road you enter a beautiful white-washed town full of Spanish character and charm. If you plan on visiting one place on the Costa del Sol, then Estepona should be that place.

TARIFA

While the Costa del Sol attracts the majority of foreign visitors to the South of Spain, the Atlantic Costa del Luz has some wonderful attractions of its own. Not least of these is the laid-back town of Tarifa, which has become something of a Mecca for fans of water-sports. Tarifa is located at the southernmost point of continental Europe, and its unique wind conditions have led to its title as the most popular destination in Europe for kite and wind-surfing. After a day on the waves, take a wander through the narrow, cobbled streets to discover bars and restaurants. This charming and chilled out seaside town will refresh body and spirit and prime you for a trek around the famous palaces of our next pick……

GRANADA

Granada is arguably the Spanish city which retains the most architectural influences from its Islamic historical legacy. The most famous of these is of course the Alhambra, a Moorish palace constructed in 1333 from the pre-existing fortress that stood on the same site. This is most definitely the jewel in the crown of Granada, but just make sure to book your tickets online before your visit to avoid disappointment. The city of Granada is also a wonderful place to enjoy at night. Wander around the numerous small bars and cafes and sample some of the free tapas that are served to accompany your drinks, to enjoy a true taste of Andalusia.

THE ADRENALINE JUNKIE’S GUIDE TO THE IDEAL, EPIC STAG (OR HEN) WEEKEND

So your mate’s stag do is just around the corner and you want to give him the single life send off to send all send offs off. Unfortunately (or perhaps, for our livers, fortunately) the popularity of boozy weekends burnt and broken on English speaking Spanish islands is on the wane; indeed, an all nighter of jager bombs and shame just doesn’t cut it these days.

Yep, for those seeking a high which isn’t illegal, the best way to awesomise the event is by indulging in some adrenaline fueled stag activities. So, move over booze and misbehaviour, a rush like no other is on its way, with this; the adrenaline junkie’s guide to the IDEAL epic stag weekend.

FREE FALL

Want to know how jumping from an airplane feels like? Getting into a free fall simulator could provide the answers – and with none of the risk of splattering on the floor. Get ready to face winds speeds of over 150 kmph; just be careful that your face doesn’t set in G-force mode, or those wedding photos are ruined. It’s true, free falling with the lads will leave them pumped for the action to follow and the pub chatter will only get livelier when you share the videos of all the spills and thrills.

BOBSLEIGH

Not purely the preserve of Cool Runnings this, and nope, you don’t have to be totally bonkers to hop in a tin cart and zip around at mind numbing speeds. If an epic stag do is making you thirsty, then bobsleighing will totally slake it.

Perfect for a group of four, this winter sport is the thing for those with a need for speed, leaving you buzzing (and maybe a little unsteady) even before touching the first pint of the day. Hurtling down the ramp at great speed is enough to turn the toughest lads into pulp, and the thought of no brakes will churn even the most stern of stomachs. A big yes, then, for those wanting to push the extremities of what they can handle.

CLIFF DIVING

When it comes to adrenaline induced fun, cliff diving is at the peak of activities for your mate’s stag weekend, peering over nervously. Sure, the thought of spending the rest of your life with the same person may induce a jump, but rest assured, safety provisions are in place to prevent any unfortunate accidents. Indeed, cliff diving is a seriously dangerous sport, but with experts on hand to assist, there’s no excuses for not taking the plunge. And that goes for your saying ‘I do’, too.

JOUSTING

Lance up, the stags are coming! Your ‘Knights of the Stag Brotherhood’ will thoroughly enjoy this activity. Imagine a bloke charging at you with the sole purpose to inflict pain and shame; erm, okay, that sounds bloody awful, but that’s jousting for you.

Who knew this medieval sport could be such a thrill? Or that it was even a thing? The modern twist to it is the motorised ‘horse’ and thick padding to protect you and your, ahem, assets when battle commences. If you have a mate you secretly hate (and don’t we all?) then this is the perfect excuse to skewer him and escape police charges. Result!

THE IDEAL GUIDE TO BUYING A ELLIPTICAL TRAINER

The humble elliptical trainer is a staple of gyms all around the world, much loved for its ease-of-use and fat-burning potential. They provide a cardio workout which has no impact on your joints whilst still simulating running, helping to protect joints from damage. Elliptical machines are used by people recovering from injuries to the hips or lower body primarily, but many fit and healthy gym-goers use them too.

Elliptical machines are a very popular in the home too, with millions of households nationwide having one sitting around somewhere. They are a fantastic investment which provides a high-level of intense, quality exercise and all the health benefits which come with that. Beyond this, elliptical machines are fun, and you can do a lot of different exercises on them.

It is no wonder that they are so popular and, second to the treadmill, are the most popular of all gym machinery. If you are thinking of buying one, we recommend checking out the Bowflex machine. You can learn more about Bowflex here if you don’t know much about it which will provide you with all you need to know.

Before you do settle on a machine for your home, there are a few things which you should consider

THINK ABOUT BUDGET

For many, money is the biggest concern when it comes to buying a piece of gym equipment for the home. With elliptical trainers starting at around the $250 mark and stretching into the thousands, they can be a massive investment.

Although you can easily buy cheaper and inexpensive models which are more budget-friendly, they do not come close to the higher-end machines in terms of their features, quality, and sturdiness. Cheaper elliptical machines tend to break easier, don’t last as long, and have less potential for exercise due to the lack of features.

When buying an elliptical machine, you should always buy the best one you can afford. As the saying goes – buy cheap, buy twice.

CONSIDER WHETER YOU HAVE ENOUGH SPACE

Gym equipment – especially elliptical machines – are not small. In addition to the space you need for the machine itself, you also need to account for the space it takes up whilst in use. Elliptical machines tend to take up more space in front and behind the machine whilst it’s in motion – unlike a treadmill – with the average one being around 5-7 feet in length.

When you add in room for a pedal extension, this can easily expand from 7-10 feet. It is not just space around the machine you need to consider though, the amount of space above is just as important. Some elliptical machines have pedals which go rather high and come with incline features, so if you are planning on putting your machine in the basement, you may want to give it a second thought.

If you are a tall person or do not have much headspace when stood on the machine, you may end up bumping your head as you are working out!

THE MACHINE’S FEATURE’S AND CHARACTERISTICS

Different elliptical machines come with different features, with the top-end models having virtually every feature you could ever think of. Some of the features you should be looking out for are as follows, and the absence of any of these three could indicate a poor-quality machine.

  • STRIDE LENGTH

This is how far the machine’s arms extend when it is in use. Some poorer-quality machines offer around 15 inches of stride length whereas the better ones offer around 21 inches. The very best machines, however, come with a stride length which can be adjusted according to your needs and stature.

  • ADJUSTABLE RESISTANCE

Adjustable resistance is another necessity for an elliptical machine, where the lowest setting makes the elliptical action very easy and the highest resistance challenging or near impossible. This means that as you get better and stronger, you can up the resistance to help your overall fitness develop.

  • ADJUSTABLE INCLINE

This is something found on top-end machines and is not all that common. By being able to adjust the incline of the ramps, it adds an extra challenge to your workout and unlocks the potential for a wide range of different exercises.

Additional factors which you should take into consideration are noise – elliptical machines can be rather loud and can make your workout sound like you are driving a car through your house – and upper body comfort – machines which have arm handles are always a good shout as this can make your workout much easier and more enjoyable, especially if you are a beginner.

Buying an elliptical machine for your home is a huge investment, with some of the top-end models costing thousands of dollars, so it is something worth putting serious thought and consideration into. The last thing you want to be doing is dropping thousands on a machine which has an absence of features or is not suitable for your needs.Th
