10 REASONS WHY DOGS ARE GREAT COMPANIONS

Dogs are said to be a ‘man’s best friend’ and it’s no wonder why, they are loyal, devoted, affectionate and will pretty much love you unconditionally.

There is something about these fury little critters that make them seem so in tune with humans. They show empathy, sadness, can sense danger and even have personality. Moreover, owning a furry companion can have lots of positive effects on your life, both mental and physical.

With this in mind, we decided to ask Fiona Firth, Burns Pet Nutrition’s Head Nutritionist and proud dog owner of Yogi, to give us her top 10 reasons on why dogs are great companions.

GREAT RUNNING BUDDIES

Unlike your friends, your dog is not going to cancel your trip to the gym at the last minute via text. Although, come to think of it, if our dog could spend the evening ‘washing my hair 2nite’, they probably would. Joking aside, your dog will most likely be relentless in their enthusiasm for a trip to the park for a frolic, which makes them great motivators for exercise.

YOU’LL GET MOVING MORE

Not a runner? Even something as simple as playing with your pets for a few minutes each day can increase your levels of daily exercise. Owning a dog will most definitely get you up and moving, since dogs are highly energetic animals and you’ll likely have to take yours for a walk daily. You’ll easily be able to reach your daily step target if you have a canine companion keeping you on your toes, that’s for sure.

And if we’re looking on the bright side, you’ll get a workout from constantly having to clean your house, too! There’s dog hair, dirt, leaves and other debris that come into the house on their paws to deal with. Even with a “non-shedding” pet, you’ll get a workout as you still have to vacuum the dog fur – yep even ‘non-shedding’ breeds shed a little.

HAPPY, HAPPY!

Research has shown that dog owners, have greater self-esteem, tend to be less lonely and are less fearful. Perfect, for those living alone, dogs not only keep them company they smother them with affection.*

THE LOVE US BACK

It has also recently been proven that dogs love us back! Scientists in California found that domesticated animals release the ‘love hormone’ oxytocin in intimate situations, just like humans! Oxytocin is the hormone that make us feel connected and form close bonds in relationships. This was detected when pets interacted with their owners.

SUPER ENTERTAINING

If you have ever seen a dog chase a spider around the room or his own tail for hours, then you will understand this point. If you haven’t, you are missing out! Dogs and their little quirks are so funny to watch.

THE BEST WELCOME

Dog owners are guaranteed to receive an over excited welcome home every night. Even more so than from our partners and families, dogs are always unashamedly, over-excited to greet you when you get home after a long day.

PROTECTORS

Everyone knows the stereotype that dogs hassle the postman and bark whenever the door goes! But these habits demonstrate what great protectors they are. This can be annoying but it also makes them great security guards. No burglar is going to get into a dog owners house without the whole street knowing about it. What’s more, you might just sleep a bit easier at night.

GREAT COMPANY

Dogs are companionable and affectionate, anyone who doesn’t like living by themselves or feels lonely, will always have a friend and company if they have a dog. They’re such personalities and are a real presence in a home that may have felt empty before. There’s a reason that dogs are known as ‘man’s best friend’, after all.

THEY MAKE US SOCIAL

Dogs are also a great way to meet people, any dog owner knows that it’s the easiest conversation starter. Neighbours, strangers, fellow dog owners, everyone wants to make friends when you have a lovely dog to talk about. Even in ‘unfriendly’ London, dog walkers get to know each other and are happy to chat.

THEY READ EMOTIONS

If you have a dog, you may have felt that they can tell when you’re upset. They change, if they’re always over- excited and needy, they usually become notably calmer. It was recently affirmed that dogs process emotional sounds in the same way as humans.

So the brain of a dog reacts in the same way as the human brain when they hear distress, like crying. No wonder then, that they can be very comforting in a crisis, and emotional support dogs can even provide valuable help to patients in times of distress.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Owning a pet has brought joy to the lives of so many. Though having one brings many benefits, it’s vital you first consider if you’re capable of giving a new pet the care it deserves. If after reading this article you’ve decided to take the plunge and get a dog, check out this article on which dog breed may best be suited to your lifestyle.

8 IDEAL TIPS ON HOW TO OVERCOME A BROKEN HEART

Getting over a broken heart is never easy. We speak to Los Angeles medical practitioner and media personality, Dr. Joseph Chambers who offers his top tips on how to overcome a break up

Can you die of a broken heart?” asks Chambers. “The short answer is yes, but man is it rare and it’s all got to do with hormones.” According to Chambers, when you’re in relationship nirvana, oxytocin and dopamine surge through your body. These are the so-called bliss hormones. They make you feel great. This goes on until you’re dumped. Then the stress hormones, epinephrine and cortisol surge, clogging up your arteries.

Rarely, this surge turns into a tsunami, and you end up with chest pain and shortness of breath – symptoms that are typical of a heart attack. But you’re not having a heart attack; this nightmare scenario is called Takotsubo syndrome, aka stress cardiomyopathy, aka stunned myocardium syndrome, and is exceedingly rare. In most of us, our hearts function normally but are still “broken” in their own unique way. Here are Dr. Chambers’ tips on surviving the “everyday-break-up” that’s not a “tsunami:”

One

Deal with the break up head on. It’s over. Accept that it’s over. Move on.

Two

No social media stalking. Checking your ex’s Facebook page every hour for morsels of info about what they’re up to will only prolong the agony. And be prepared for the inevitable status switch to “single.”

Three

Avoid old haunts that you went to as a couple or anything else that reminds you of him or her, at least for a little while. Otherwise you’re just rubbing salt in the wound.

Four

Avoid desperate texting, late night drunk dialing… Why? It doesn’t work.

Five

Above all, no drunk sexting. An unwanted sext is anti-erotic and is about as welcome as a fart in church.

Six

Nothing wrong with hitting the Haagen-Dazs or having a couple of beers – but I do mean a couple. Binging on beer or vodka shots or whatever won’t bring back your loved one.

Seven

Avoid losing your friends because you won’t shut up about your ex. There’s a fine line between healthy venting and obsessing about your ex to the point your friends want to break up with you. This is where professional therapists come in.

Eight

Finally, if the therapy’s not working, plus you feel weepy and a bit out of control, give yourself a break

IDEAL REASONS TO: TAKE THE KIDS TO…DUBAI

When someone mentions Dubai to you, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Glitz and glamour, most likely. Dubai is one of those places that seems to mimic the kind of grand vision of the future we saw in the films of the 1970’s and 80’s: huge skyscrapers, twinkling lights, and amazingly clean streets. It is famed for the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world standing at a colossal 829.8 meters high, and also for its huge fancy shopping malls and hotels.

Dubai is the kind of place that leaves no stone unturned when it comes to cleanliness, service, and style – so it’s not exactly the usual place you would pick for a family holiday. What may surprise you, however, is that it has recently become a bit of a hotspot for families with young children, as more and more people make use of the amazing facilities out there. Here are just a few of the reasons why you should pick Dubai for your next family getaway.

The beaches

When you book a summer holiday with your kids, a big pull of the destination is usually the quality of the beaches. Having access to a number of good beaches is paramount for many people when it comes to their vacation – the beach provides endless entertainment for your kids as they play in the sea and with the sand, while you can kick back with a good book and a refreshing drink. Sound pretty blissful? Well, Dubai has some of the most exquisite beaches in the world, that are kept astonishingly clean. Some you do have to pay for, but trust us, once you see the views you’ll know it’s all worth it! Jumeirah Beach and Al Mamzar Beach are two of the most popular stretches of public beach.

The activities

If there’s one thing that proves that Dubai is the new family holiday destination, it’s the sheer amount of activities that are available. Dubai is famed for its incredible selection of water parks, some of which don’t even look real! The Aquaventure Park boasts a whopping 40 acres of rides, including the legendary Tower of Poseidon and that Ziggurat, which stands at 100 ft tall. There are also some aquariums, where the whole family can marvel at an array of marine life, and even an indoor ski park.

The desert

One of the truly wonderful things about Dubai is the diversity of its landscape. Yes, it is famed as being an ultra cool, metropolitan city. But just a short drive out of the city center will bring you to the outskirts of the Arabian desert. Here you can take part in a variety of family-friendly activities, whether that’s enjoying a camel ride or going on a tour that includes some traditional Emirati entertainment. The desert really is like no other place on earth, so it’s definitely the kind of experience your children will remember forever. Just don’t forget your suncream!

The hotel is just around the corner (2 blocks to be exact) from Union Square which is a place full of life and a must see cultural destination.  If you like people watching, then Union Square is the place for you. Here you can watch skateboarders and street performers in action. There are plenty of shops and it’s great for grabbing a quick bite to eat .

Hyatt Union Square New York4

Union Square is also known as the gateway to downtown and the East Village and West Village are on the Hyatt’s doorstep.  You can easily walk to the Chelsea, the Flatiron district and the bars and clubs of the Meatpacking district. If you don’t fancy walking, Union Square is really well connected so the subway is a brilliant option. Also, like almost everywhere in the city,  you’re seconds away from cabs that will take you uptown or downtown. Style and Character – sharp, chic and relaxed

The first thing that hits as you enter the lobby doors of the hotel is the amazing smell. A lovely fragrance is diffused in the lobby giving off a wonderful aroma which is simply delightful.

This place is cool, but not over the top. It has a funky and relaxed vibe with chic interiors designed by renowned interior designer Paul Vega. His aim was to create a ‘unique urban space that blends high-tech design with natural elements’ and this he did. The hotel even features a table in the lounge which sits on a tree stump salvaged from Hurricane Sandy.

Throughout the hotel the designer has used earthy and neutral tones with pops of colour everywhere, evoking the haute bohemian lifestyle of Union Square mixed with the artistry and creative culture of the East Village.

Like the rest of the hotel, the rooms boast a contemporary and sleek design with modern décor and natural elements. HOW TO CHANGE YOUR LOOK IF YOU’RE STUCK IN A RUT

0

Fashion and beauty are two words which excite and infuriate at the same time. As wonderful as it may be to admire the appearance of your beautiful friend or that ideal celebrity you envy, when it comes to personal beauty, you feel like smashing the mirror in anger. Of course, and I hate to burst your bubble, but this is how everybody feels when they look in the mirror. We’re all self critical, and those women you so admire and aspire to be most likely feel just the same about their own appearance. Perhaps somebody already admires the way you look, but none of that matters if you don’t admire the way you look.

We all find ourselves in a rut sometimes when it comes to our appearance. Sometimes you just want a change, but sometimes you might realise you’ve not really been maintaining yourself for a long time and you want to get back into the tough game of daily “beautifying” once more. Still, you don’t have to be overwhelmed by this task, because beauty, fashion and general self-maintenance of your appearance both in terms of your aesthetic and looking after yourself on a practical level should not be quite as difficult as you build them up to be. Here are some tips for making beauty and fashion simpler concepts to wrap your head around.

Look after your face

Facial beauty is something you should consider for more than vain reasons, but keeping your skin and body healthy. You could try the ice water facial, which is exactly what the name suggests it might be: submerge your face in ice cold water. I know you’re shuddering just at the mention of such a barbaric beauty regime, but bear with me on this one. Not only will this clever little trick wake you up on a slow, uninspiring Monday morning, but it’ll tighten pores and make your skin feel smooth. So, whilst you’re making your skin feel healthier, it’ll also look healthier. That’s right. I’ve just suggest a beauty tip which is completely natural, makes you look better and actually helps you on a practical level. Who’d have thought it?

Sort out that hair

It’s easy to get lazy with our hair, because, when there’s just so much of it, self-maintenance becomes an absolute chore. Still, it’s your hair, and you’re in complete control of how it looks, so you don’t have to let it become a difficult task. You could opt for a shorter cut, as many women and girls are doing at the moment; maintenance becomes easier, and you’ve achieved that new look you were dying for. And sometimes frizzy hair looks cute, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you love it. Perhaps it’s time to look into companies such as Straight Hair Day, and take some straighteners to that wild, untamed mop for a smoother look. At the end of the day, there are numerous styles out there which work beautifully on some women and not-so-beautifully on others.

The point isn’t that you should choose a specific style to look good, but find the style which works on you. If you’re neglecting and failing to maintain your hair at the moment, that’s the main thing you should be changing. Keep it clean and well-maintained. The top beauty tip I can ever give you is to just look after your hair, and don’t worry about the style itself; hair grows back, and it can always be changed if you don’t like a new style.

Watch some YouTube tutorials

One of the best ways to inspire a new look if you’re stuck in a rut is to use the wonderful resource which is the internet to find some inspiration. YouTube vloggers in particular are a great place to start for beauty and fashion tips, because this world is their day-by-day life. You won’t find a more genuine representation of somebody trying on the latest clothes in the market or trying out the latest beauty brands because they love them, rather than for the sole intent of business opportunities. There’s an endless supply of women out there, just like you, who can give you an idea of how certain make ups will actually look once applied or whether a certain jacket or cute skirt actually suits women of your shape and height.

Get your beauty sleep

Yes, this is more than a cliché. Sleep can naturally enhance your beauty, and that, funnily enough, is why we need it. You don’t even have to sit in front of a mirror for hours to achieve this new look. If you’ve been failing to get rest recently, perhaps getting into a healthier sleeping pattern is all you need to reinvigorate your skin and simply look healthier because you will be healthier.

GO ON A SPORTS HOLIDAY TO AUSTRALIA THIS YEAR AND YOU WON’T BE DISSAPOINTED

Australians live and breathe sport, and have enjoyed prolonged success on the world stage in cricket and rugby. The land Down Under is also home to Australian Rules Football, a lesser known field sport worldwide but much loved within the country. For sports lovers, a trip to Australia is an absolute must, and 2017 could be a great year to make your journey there. There are some huge sporting events going on this year starting in autumn and going into winter, including the NRL Grand Final, the Ashes, and the AFL Grand Final. Here we take a look at the locations of each event and provide a little background information.

The AFL Grand Final

If you want to get a feel for Australian sport at its most passionate level then you need to check out Aussie Rules, and what better game to go to than the Grand Final? The ultimate AFL match will be played on 30th of September this year at the electric Melbourne Cricket Ground that has a capacity of over 100,000. The reigning champions are the Western Bulldogs, who claimed the title last year after a 62-year Premiership drought. The Bulldogs beat Sydney Swans by 22 points, and they made history by winning the final from seventh-place on the ladder for the first time. The Melbourne-based club are well favoured to make it all the way again this season, and are in with a chance of claiming back-to-back titles for the first time in their history. Now that would be a cracking way to start your Australian sporting tour.

The NRL Grand Final

Following on from that is a game with a similar shaped ball but a wildly different set of rules. The last match of the rugby league season is the Grand Final held at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney. The winning team is crowned Premier champions. The last match was a close-fought contest between Melbourne Storm and Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in front of over 80,000 fans. The Sharks just edged it, winning 14-12 in an epic encounter. Melbourne are favoured to bounce back this year, though, with the best nrl odds placing the Storm at 7/1 to win. The 2017 match takes place on 1st of October, and tickets are already available for what will surely be a sell-out event.

The Ashes 2017

The greatest cricketing event on the planet is due to take place in Australia this year, and will begin in the final week of November. The Ashes will surely attract thousands of tourists to the southern hemisphere for the encounter between England and Australia. England are the current holders, but they have only managed to win on Australian soil twice in the last thirty years, so expect a tough contest. For those wanting to travel and watch cricket, the Ashes series is a prime opportunity. The fives tests will be held in Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne, and Sydney. The Perth match could be a particularly momentous occasion as it will be the last time a test is held at the famous WACA Ground before the opening of the new Perth Stadium.

These events span from the end of September through to 2018, and those who want to hang around for the New Year can also catch the Australian Open in January. The Open is the first major Grand Slam of the year and marks the start of the tennis season. For epic sporting occasions, it’s hard to rival Australia.

5 ALTERNATIVE IDEAL URBAN ESCAPES IN ENGLAND

Visit Leeds

While London, Bath, Brighton and Liverpool will be perennial favourite city break destinations, there are new and emerging cultural hubs, artist enclaves and foodie quarters popping up to put other towns and cities more firmly on the tourist map. From Hull to Southampton, with the help of VisitEngland,  we give a proud shout-out to the new urban hotspots to go on the bucket list.

Halifax

Heralding the most dynamic new era for Halifax for generations, Yorkshire’s humble minster town, famed for being the original home of (Rowntree) Mackintosh’s chocolate and toffee products, will soon see the reopening of one of the most extraordinary buildings in Britain, Piece Hall. Following a £19 million restoration, the unique, Grade 1 Listed building, which dates from 1779 and was originally built to support the trading of “pieces” of cloth, will become home to a variety of independent and artisan shops, cafés and restaurants, as well as a heritage centre and hub for creative businesses. The striking structure, including one of Europe’s great public squares, will also host an array of special events including a spectacular year round outdoor events programme. Beyond its legacy for inspiring production of Rolo and Quality Street, Halifax is set to become a firm fixture on the city “hotlist” map owing to this significant heritage project, due for completion in 2017. www.thepiecehall.co.uk

Southampton

With development of its burgeoning Cultural Quarter well underway and plans for the waterfront city’s first five-star hotel to open next year, Southampton is set to enhance its cultural break credentials and become a whole lot more popular among those looking to enjoy a rich arts experience and luxurious coastal getaway. At the epicentre of its arts offerings is “Studio 144”, a stunning cultural complex designed to be a magnet for visitors near and far. Opening in 2017, Studio 144, which spans two adjacent landmarked buildings framing Guildhall Square, will be home to Nuffield Theatre due to open in September 2017, as well as an art gallery, café bistro and bar. With the new complex estimated to attract 350,000 visitors annually, Southampton’s first luxury five-star hotel, Southampton Harbour Hotel & Spa, will be another welcome new addition. Due to open in June 2017 at Ocean Village, hotel highlights will include 85 luxury bedrooms, a jetty restaurant featuring a rooftop champagne bar, and the decadent harbour Spa featuring a gym and swimming pool. In the meantime, you can enjoy a great break at stylish Pig in the Wall, a restaurant with rooms set within the city’s medieval walls.

Leeds

Already regarded in Yorkshire as a retail paradise, the bustling city of Leeds recently added another attraction to its existing appeal with the full refurbishment of Grade I-listed Kirkgate Market, famous for being the birthplace of Marks & Spencer. As one of the largest indoor markets in Europe, visitors can find everything from a diverse range of fresh food and drink to fashion, jewellery, flowers, hardware and haberdashery. Having undergone a major multi-million pound revamp, the building can host changing events and seasonal markets set within the stunning architecture and traditional market layout of the Victorian and Edwardian halls. Opened in October 2016, Victoria Gate is another exciting addition to the city’s vibrant shopping scene. Designed as a modern take on the Victorian arcades for which Leeds is renowned, the new retail and leisure space will house the largest John Lewis department store outside London.

Derby

Having benefitted from roughly £2.2 billion worth of regeneration to date, it’s no secret among locals that Derby is more than deserving of a weekend break. Beyond the brilliant beer and its reputation as one of Britain’s Real Ale Capitals, the lively Cathedral city also has a diverse selection of excellent eateries that are propelling the city’s food scene past the famous Derby pyclets. Future plans focus on promoting the region’s excellent cycling, which can already be sampled at the Derby Arena, a gigantic new sports arena and velodrome, which opened last year.

Hull

Hull is set to seize its title as UK City of Culture 2017, following a multi-million pound city centre transformation that includes: a £4.5 million refurbishment of the Ferens Art Gallery, which will reopen in January and will host  next year’s Turner Prize, one of the biggest events in British Art; a major refurbishment of the award-winning aquarium, “The Deep”, which will host changing marine themed art exhibitions and artists in residence throughout the year; plus a huge revitalisation of the waterfront and public spaces and art installations galore! There’s already plenty for visitors to see and enjoy, including a vibrant cafe culture and top notch eateries around the Marina and music venues, galleries and boutique markets in the inviting arts and cultural quarter, otherwise known as the re-energised Humber Street and Fruit Market area. TOO FAR OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE: UNDERSTANDING THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS OF CRUSHING STRESS

0

With chronic stress continually on the rise, it’s been considered a public health crisis across America for over five years. However, you may be surprised to know a huge majority of stressed people don’t actually realize they’re stressed. This phenomenon is commonly known as ‘iceberg stress’.

Chronic stress can be crushing and cause many severe symptoms but, if someone is experiencing stress symptoms and choosing to ignore them, this denial can cause consequences to be even worse. If you’re unsure if stress is what you’re experiencing and want to know potential causes, symptoms, and methods of self-help treatment, you’re in the right place!

Causes and symptoms

Debilitating stress can be caused by many different factors, but some of the most common include sudden life changes, relationship problems, financial difficulties or issues at work. Stress comes in many forms, so it’s essential to recognize the differences between what’s considered ‘normal’ stress and chronic, crushing stress.

When experiencing chronic stress, this is when the bodily systems start to become affected. During any type of stress response, the body can still react with the typical ‘fight or flight’ mechanism; it’s when these events are experienced on a long-term basis that chronic, more serious stress symptoms will occur.

Anxiety

Perhaps one of the most common symptoms of chronic stress, anxiety has the ability to take over all aspects of your life if you don’t take appropriate measures to both control and fix it. Capable of affecting you both physically and emotionally, it’s essential you take action as soon as you recognize if this symptom is present.

Taking time out for yourself is crucial. If you lead an exceptionally busy life this may appear impossible, but you can’t work and be busy 24 hours a day; there will always be some free time to be had. Nervous habits

Constant nail biting or pacing are both sure-fire signs that you may be more stressed than you realize. If this is the case, exercise is one of the most effective methods to combat this.

Providing an outlet for any frustrations you may be feeling, exercise is also a proven mood-booster due to the endorphins it releases. Likely to eliminate nervous habits and improve your stress overall, going all-out in the gym or simply taking a daily walk can have a significantly positive effect.

Worrying

As cliché as it sounds, a problem shared is a problem halved. If you find yourself consistently worried about the same issues, talking them out with a close friend or relative will instantly feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders.

Whilst stress is notoriously common, many people don’t even realize they’re experiencing it chronically. But, by taking the time to look at your own symptoms and establishing how bad you’re stress really is, this is the essential first step to take towards recovery.

5 AWESOME WAYS TO GET PAID TO TRAVEL

Everyone dreams of touring the world one day. You get to see exotic places, meet new people and experience new cultures. But being a tourist remains just a dream for most people. Rising airfares and the high cost of accommodation has prevented all but a chosen few from touring the globe. Yet, it is not only possible to travel the world for free, but even earn some money in the process. Here are five great ways that you can get paid to travel.

Become a Flight Attendant

A flight attendant’s job is not as demanding as is commonly assumed. You work for only 80 hours a month – that is a mere 20 hours a week – and still get to earn $25,000 to $50,000. To top it all, you get to travel to far-flung places, and get travel benefits for your family as well.

Work on a Cruise Ship

A job on a cruise line is perfect for people who love traveling in a laid-back manner, or who are afraid of flying. But although the pay is lower than that paid by airlines, and the working hours are longer, you have more workmates to bond with. You and the rest of the crew will also enjoy private dining halls, shops, gyms and party areas. Working on a cruise ship can be a great experience as long as you have realistic expectations.

Work as a Tour Guide

Imagine earning a living showing people what you consider to be your dream destination – say, Venice, Rome or Paris. That is possible as a tourist guide. For long term work, consider working for a local touring company. The pay is better and you have job security. On the flip-side it ties you down to one spot, and you will tend to follow an established routine that can become boring in time.

For some quick short-term cash and freedom to do your own thing, try to work as a freelancer. You become your own boss and use your personality to earn your keep. However, if you’re going to be a tour guide, you have to act like a professional. Contact a reliable company such as Folder Printing and have them prepare professional pamphlets that you’ll be able to pass to your visitors. Strike deals with local restaurants and attractions and offer to promote them for a fee. The opportunities are endless for tour guides who are ready to do the extra leg work and get creative.

Write for a Travel Guidebook

To decide on where to spend their vacation, people rely on travel guidebooks such as Lonely Planet which, in turn, rely on guidebook researchers. As a researcher, you will fly different places to try exotic cuisines, cultures and hotels. But be warned, although you write for people on holiday, your job is anything but one.

Write a Travel Blog

Instead for writing for a travel guidebook company, you write for your own travel blog for the benefit of social media followers. You can make money once you have a large following.

You do not need to save for many years to travel the world. In fact, you do not need to have a dime.

IDEAL GUIDE: ONLINE DATING ETIQUETTE

The world of dating is changing. One out of every five new relationships now begins online, and women are almost as likely to use online dating services as men. With an estimated seven million people now using them in the UK alone, they’re a great way to go looking for love.

Successfully meeting your ideal companion online is not just about creating an attractive dating profile. You will also need to know the rules.

Know your etiquette

If you want to make a good impression, you’ll need to be polite. Get it right with these simple tips.

  • Be clear about what you’re after. Let people know if you want sex, romance or both, and don’t feel obliged to respond to people who ignore this.
  • Don’t be too forward. Unless somebody has specifically okayed it in their profile, do not send explicit pictures without permission.
  • Don’t get too personal. Most people do not exchange addresses, phone numbers or workplace details until they have met in person.
  • Stay safe. If you decide to meet somebody, do it first in a public place. Likewise, be sure to respect the other person’s need to feel safe.
  • Don’t be afraid to say no. If you receive a proposition that does not interest you, it is okay to ignore it. Otherwise, keep your response simple and be polite but firm.
  • Make friends! Not every opportunity will blossom into romance, but there are other good reasons to connect with people.

Getting your online dating etiquette right will ensure you don’t look like a newcomer and keep you from accidentally offending people you might like to connect with. It will keep you safe and help you avoid negative experiences so you can relax and have fun getting to know people. You never know – you might find that special person you’ve been looking for all your life!

OUR IDEAL GUIDE ON DECIDING HOW TO SELL A HOUSE

Whether you are upsizing or downsizing, relocating or simply recalibrating your life, you have made the decision to sell your property and are now thinking through the best way to sell your house. There are several options which we have a quick look at, in order to help you decide one way or the other.

Estate Agents

As ABC Gone, an estate agents in Upminster, tell us, about 90% of home sales happen through estate agents, since there is a lot of legislation, time and effort involved in selling a house. The estate agency will market your house as if it were their own, and have a vested interest in getting a fair price, for both parties.

Online estate agents are becoming more and more popular, offering the same great services as bricks and mortar, from an online location. They can arrange viewings, vet applicants and continue to manage the property once it has sold, if you like. This will significantly reduce the amount of time you need to spend on it, which is the major advantage of using an estate agents.

Regardless of whether you go online or use a physical location, you should always check if the realtor you’re considering using is a ”member of the Property Ombudsman and many other professional property bodies”. Doing so is the first step in ensuring you’re receiving the best possible service from your estate agent.

Private Selling

You may opt to sell your property privately, since there is no legal obligation to use an estate agent. If you want to save on agency fees, then this may be the sale structure for you. If the property is significant to you in some way, you may wish to have control over who buys it, to ensure they love it as much as you have. In this case, many sellers manage the sale themselves.

However, you will need to consider that there is a lot of work involved in selling a house. You may find that a private sale finds you the same kind of sale price as an estate agency would, or sometimes even more. You will obviously make savings on the estate agency’s cut too. Knowing where and how to market and advertise are two of the most important considerations for selling privately.

Auction

A third route into property sale is by selling the house at auction. This is certainly not for everyone. The most obvious benefit of an auction sale is the quick turnaround. There is usually only 28 days between the hammer going down and occupancy. Auctions are better suited to rare and desirable buildings or those which have fallen into disrepair. One of the downsides to auction is that it is one of the most expensive routes to a sale, and many people prefer to go with estate agents.

IDEAL GUIDE: HOW TO MAKE YOUR HOUSE FEEL MORE LIKE A HOME

So you’ve moved into a new house and you’re really proud of your purchase. You also can’t wait to start decorating it and really making the new property your very own. But how can you go about making your new house feel more like home quickly and easily? Keep reading for a few helpful tips.

Decorate in Your Own Unique Style

You have a new house, which means you have a brand new canvas that you can work with. Decorate it however you wish, and search for everything from furniture to cute décor in stores and online so you can find great discount offers that will help you save money (after all, you have a new mortgage to pay now, too). Think about the vibe that you want each and every room to exude and then look for the décor and furnishings that will bring it to life. Before you know it, your personality and unique style will be shining through and your house will feel a lot more like home in no time.

Bring in Elements from Your Old Place

Bringing in special pieces of furniture and décor from your old home is a great way to make your new house feel like your perfect sanctuary. Whether it is a piece of artwork that you love having on your wall or some pieces that you have collected from your travels over the years, these seemingly small elements can really make a big difference when you are trying to make a new property feel like you have been living there for years.

Start by Making Small Changes

You don’t need to go into your new house and start remodelling it right away, especially if you do not have the budget to do so. Instead, you can start with remodelling one room at a time until your house is complete. A good place to start is a small space like the bathroom. You spend a good amount of time in there, so by tweaking its décor and replacing things like the toilet and the sink, you can really start to make it yours. Plus, if you start with a small room like this, you will be far less likely to blow through your budget.

Warm Up the Space

Warming up your home with the right colours, as well as things like pretty flowers and candles, can really make you feel right at home. Put a cosy blanket on your sofa, along with some soft pillows, and you will want to snuggle in and watch TV at the end of a hard workday. You can also add unique elements throughout your kitchen, where you will be spending a lot of time, so you can make it your own.

After you have remodelled and redecorated your new place, it will definitely start to feel like you truly belong there. You will fall in love with your new house and you will not miss your old place at all. So keep the above tips in mind when you are trying to make a new house feel like home.

CREATING A TRAVEL ITINERARY THAT’S PERFECT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

When you think of the stereotypical traveller, your mind probably conjures up images of single, young adventurers with all their worldly possessions stuffed into a backpack and without a care in the world. It is important to remember, however, that traveling should be for everyone to enjoy. Today, it is viewed as more of a right than a privilege, letting people encounter vital, new experiences.

For families, of course, travel involves more than a few practical considerations. You’ll need to choose an itinerary that contains fun for adults and kids alike, and if you have little ones to look after, you may want to take things a little slower than you might do otherwise. Nonetheless, you can create a travel plan that suits everyone’s tastes – and here’s how.

Keeping the little ones entertained

Going travelling is generally an exciting time, but the travel itself is not to everyone’s tastes. In fact, a ten-hour flight isn’t really to anyone’s tastes, but kids can find it especially boring. Parents should plan ahead to ensure that they are prepared in the event of disruptive behaviour during travel. Remember to include snacks, games and other forms of entertainment to keep your child occupied. Also, some spare clothes and some medicine will also come in handy.

Long flights can also prove uncomfortable, making it difficult for your children to get to sleep. Make sure they are dressed in comfortable clothes and take a travel pillow with you if you have the space. If you can get your children to go to sleep then the journey will probably go a lot smoother for everyone concerned and they’ll have plenty of energy to start exploring once they land.

Cruise control

If you want a travel package that is no fuss, but plenty of fun, then a cruise provides the perfect family option. Firstly, you do not need to worry about finding restaurants and accommodation each night, as everything is included in the price of the cruise. You also don’t need to worry about kids being disruptive on flights, because they can simply rest in your family cabin while the ship drifts peacefully on the open waves.

What’s more, the onboard entertainment caters for passengers of all ages. There are high-end restaurants for the adults and waterslides for the kids. What’s more, a cruise means you and the family get to see multiple locations without having to sort out how you are going to travel between them all. If you’re not sure whether a cruise is right for your family, then Bolsover Cruise Questions & Answers should be able to solve any queries you might have. If you’re looking for a family excursion that will leave you feeling fresh, rather than frazzled, then a cruise could be just what you need.

Read the reviews

If you’ve never been on a holiday as a whole family before, or if you are simply travelling somewhere new, then it is important that you carry out some thorough research first. Although you could enquire with travel agents and tourist boards, the most honest appraisal you can get will be from fellow families that have already made the trip.

Review sites, like TripAdvisor, are particularly useful for finding out whether a destination is truly family friendly and will cover everything from accommodation to entertainment. What’s more, there are now bespoke sites that have been created especially for the family market, where you can access first-hand advice that tells you everything you need to know.

The last thing you want when travelling is to arrive at a destination only to find that your kids are too young to go any of the rides at the theme park or that the spa you planned to visit doesn’t let in children at all. Online reviews provide a great way of answering your questions before your family sets off.

Find some time for yourselves

Even if you are planning a fantastic family holiday with something to suit everyone, you might still want a night or two to yourselves. This doesn’t mean abandoning your children in a hotel somewhere – in fact there are a number of reputable childcare services designed with travelling families in mind.

Care supplies childminders in 19 countries, so you can find a babysitter to look after your children while you have a well-earned evening out. By taking some time for yourselves, you can ensure you feel fresh and revitalised to spend the rest of your holiday together as one big, happy family.

8 RULES FOR DATING IN A MODERN WORLD

bench-sea-sunny-man-large

Jean Smith, founder of Flirtology and Flirt Interpreter extraordinaire, shares her top tips on how to date in a modern world

In this age of online dating, virtual flirting and location-based hookups by app, dating today is harder than ever. And what’s even more difficult? Knowing how to act and what to do if you actually meet someone you like in person (because let’s face it; flirting and talking online is so much easier as you have time to think about your oh so natural and witty reply). Also, what are the rules for dating? Is it ok for a woman to ask someone out? Or is that intimidating? With all these questions in mind, we’ve asked flirting expert, Jean Smith, who has appeared on BBC Breakfast, Daybreak and ITV’s London Tonight commenting on topics ranging from dating, flirting and relationships to wider social issues, to share her expert advice on how to date in a modern world.

Over to you Jean…

Society and its rules fluctuate depending on what people need and what people have. Traditionally, it was men’s sole responsibility to ask women out and pay for the date. Why? Because they had the money, they had the transport and they held all the cards. As the higher-earning gender, along with deciding whom to ask out, they also had the honour of paying for it.

Society has moved away from this pay model, with women now earning almost as much as men. Nevertheless, this old-fashioned attitude about who should do the asking (and paying) still prevails, creating a disconnect and much confusion on how to behave. As a Flirtologist, I meet many high-flying, executive women, who make bags of money and have bags of confidence. Why shouldn’t they ask a man out? Besides, men like it!

So, what are the dating rules in this modern society? Let’s turn to science for the answer.

While researching for my book, The Flirt Interpreter, I interviewed 100 men in four different international, Western cities. I asked them if they would like it if a woman approached them and asked them out. The answer was a resounding ‘yes!’ on both counts. Followed by ‘as long as it’s not done too aggressively’. So there we have it – just don’t plop yourself down on their laps, arms dangled around their necks, and expect them to say yes. Other than that, you’ll be fine!

So, what are the 8 rules for dating in the modern world? I am so glad you asked.

1. If you like someone, approach them!

Don’t wait for the other person to make the move. Gender has become obsolete in this regard and now it’s more about common sense! How is a guy to know you’re interested if you stand in the corner willing him to walk over? If you are looking at art, for example, and get chatting you could say something like, “I have been meaning to go that new exhibition at the V&A. Would you like to join me?” Which leads me to rule #2…

2. Don’t be scared of rejection.

Believe it or not, it is your friend. Statistically, we cannot click with everyone we meet. If you chat to someone and they make it clear that feelings are not reciprocated, move on! Don’t think of it as a setback for your self-esteem, but a step forward to finding someone you’re compatible with.  If you need to boost your self-esteem you should make sure you’re grooming well. Grooming Corp has lots of mens grooming tips if you need help.

3. Keep it casual.

If you see someone cute, walk over and start a natural conversation. Hitting on people can seem intimidating when you think of strutting up and opening with “hey, sweet cheeks,” but simply asking, “is it always this busy? It’s my first time here,” is a casual and natural way to start chatting.

4. Change your expectations and do away with false standards.

Despite whatever belief you have in destiny, you will not be able to determine if a man is right for you within two minutes of meeting him. Admit it, you probably spend more time lingering over the Chinese takeaway menu! Once you stop looking at people with, “is this the future father of my children?” or “is she the one?” in mind, taking things as they come becomes a lot easier. The question you should be asking is, “am I having a good time right now, in this moment?”

5. Got a date? Great! Don’t expect the man to pay.

There are a surprising amount of women, even in the younger generations, who expect men to be ‘chivalrous’ and pay for dates. Why should men pay for dates? We now know that in the past it was because they had more money and had cars, but these days, aren’t we all on equal (or, at least closer) footing? More importantly, don’t we want to be? As a general rule, whoever asks should pay. If women can ask, they can pay and, equally, if men can be asked, they can be taken out!

6. So you’ve had a great date, wonderful! Now, forget it.

This person you’ve just been on a date with is a stranger minus a few hours you’ve spent together. Get on with your full and happy life and don’t fill your thoughts with romantic ideals of your ‘future’. Nobody should keep you waiting by the phone, especially not someone you’ve only just met!

7. Keep an open mind.

There are plenty more happily ever afters than the old husband, wife, two kids and a white picket fence. Just as we have more choice in the modern world, we also have more scenarios in which we could be happy. Don’t let old-fashioned notions of happiness stop you from actually being happy in life. Which, brings me to rule #8…

8. You can be happy alone.

You should be happy alone. Why should your feeling of contentedness rest on another human being? Sounds pretty risky to me. Don’t wait for someone else to come along and fill in the gaps. Start living your life and now! People are attracted to happy people. Be open, be happy, exude that happiness and the person to share that with will be drawn to you.
The rules have certainly changed in the last few generations of flirting history. Women can approach, men don’t have to pay for dates and being single is coveted rather than pitied. Nowadays, we have the capacity to flirt and date for fun, not just for the traditional goal of an early marriage. We have the tools at our disposal to enjoy single life, no matter what gender we are. The ‘rules’ are about you and your life, rather than finding someone to complete your life.
