Checklist For Yacht Transport: Things You Should Check

Yachts are expensive. If you own one, then you already know this. Because of how expensive they are, you need to take care of yours. Transporting a yacht can be very complicated and increases the risk of your yacht becoming damaged. In order to avoid your yacht becoming damaged, you need to select the method of transport that’s safest and best for it. You also need to find a company that’s professional and experienced to move it for you. This article will present everything that you need to know so that you can find a company to move your yacht for you:

Method

As already mentioned, the first thing that you need to do is to find a method that’s right for your yacht. There are many different methods. The most popular method of transport, for good reason, is by ship. The method of transportation that you choose depends largely upon where you are going, and how far away it is. The most common methods are:

Ship

Transporting your yacht by ship is perhaps the fastest and safest method because your yacht can be moved from marina to marina without having to go on land. The downside to ship transportation is that it can be expensive. If money isn’t a concern, then ship transportation is definitely something that we would recommend. Most shipping companies will allow you to purchase an additional insurance policy so that you can get compensated if your yacht is damaged.

Truck

Large trucks are used to move yachts. With that said, it’s only possible to move small yachts by truck, because they’re often too large to fit in the back. Despite that, it’s still worth checking this option out if you can’t afford to hire a shipping company to do it for you. Digressing from the subject of trucks slightly, it’s also worth bearing in mind that shipping your boat is a much more effective method too, because size is not a concern. You can ship more or less any type of yacht, regardless of size (unless it’s a superyacht), by ship.

Towing

If your yacht is small, then you may be able to connect it to a trailer and tow it by road yourself. The downside to towing your boat is that it’s unlikely you can get it insured, and the chances of it being damaged increase significantly. Accidents happen all of the time. One of the most common involving yachts being towed is that the trailer they are attached to unhooks, causing the yacht to fall off of the back of the trailer. If you are travelling at high speed, this can completely destroy your yacht and injure people that are travelling behind you.

Sailing

Finally, we arrive at sailing. If you are not travelling very far and are a competent captain, you could always sail your yacht. This could take a lot of time, however, so if you are in a hurry then this isn’t the method for you.

Checklist

Before moving on to the qualities that you should look for in a transportation company, let’s first cover a quick checklist on everything that you need to have prepared before you can ship your yacht.

  • Insurance is an absolute necessity. You should not ship your yacht without it. If you try to ship your yacht without insurance and it becomes damaged, you may not be able to pay for its repairs. It’s very likely that the company responsible for shipping your yacht will not assume responsibility if it is damaged. They will probably ask you to sign a waiver, confirming you will not take legal action against them. Insurance, with this in mind, is very important. It will ensure that you are compensated for the cost of your boat and that you don’t end up out of pocket.
  • Protection is also important. When we say this, what we mean is protective wrapping around your boat and proper indoor security. Make sure that the doors to your yacht are locked and that there isn’t anything valuable inside. You also need to make sure that you remove anything that isn’t attached to the floor. During transit, if something were to come loose then it could damage your yacht’s interior or worse, break the windows.
  • Destination needs to be worked out. You need to know exactly where your yacht is going so that when it arrives, you have somewhere to store it. There is only a fixed period that the shipping company will hold your yacht for you. If you are shipping it by land, keeping it out of the water risks it being stolen or damaged, so you need to have a marina for it to go to. Make sure that you have a storage destination arranged for it when it arrives.

Transportation Company

When you are searching for a transportation company, professionality and experience is everything. You can’t entrust your yacht to a company that doesn’t know what it’s doing, otherwise, it could become damaged. The best way to determine whether or not a company’s worth using is by checking their reviews. Reviews give you a glimpse into how the company operates. It also gives you the opportunity to learn about the company directly from their customers. You should also consider reading reviews that have been published on independent review sites because they are unbiased and reliable.

Another thing to consider is your boat’s security. If you entrust your boat to a company that doesn’t have many reviews published online, then you won’t be able to relax knowing that they’ve got your boat. For your sake, and your yacht’s sake, make sure that you find a company that’s established, reliable, and secure. If your boat falls into the wrong person’s hands, it could be stripped and sold. It could also be stolen. Yacht theft is a very big industry. Make sure that the company you deal with has all of the required licenses necessary for them to legally operate.

If you are looking for yacht transportation, then you need to look carefully. Your yacht should only be entrusted to companies that are reliable and licensed. If your yacht falls into the wrong hands, it could be damaged or stolen. Make sure to properly secure your yacht and take everything else suggested here into consideration.

World Sleep Day: Top TikTok Sleep Tips For The Best Sleep

Whether you are feeling particularly stressed or suffer with insomnia, struggling to fall asleep can really impact your quality of life and health.

In the run up to World Sleep Day this Friday, the wellness experts at BWell CBD have researched the most popular sleep hacks from TikTok, curating the best tips and offering their own insights to help you drift off into a more restful snooze.

Enjoy A Calming Cuppa

It’s no wonder that so many of us choose to relax with a warming cup of tea in hand before we head up to bed, enjoying the process of letting our bodies unwind as we transition into rest mode after a busy day. Chamomile tea is particularly effective for drifting off into a quality sleep so put some water on the boil and switch out your regular caffeine-filled cuppa for a calming chamomile.

Introduce Bananas Into Your 5-a-day

Bananas are packed with magnesium and potassium, helping your mind relax as well as your muscles. By tucking into a banana not long before you go to bed, you stimulate the production of those key brain calming hormones and produce that soothing energy so you can enjoy some good quality Zzzeds.

Keep Your Feet Warm In Bed

By keeping your socks on as you tuck yourself into bed for the night, you can actually help yourself get a better night of rest. The process of warming your feet up helps to open up your blood vessels, cooling down your body so you can fall asleep faster and get that all important shuteye.

Gently Massage Behind The Ear

Although this may appear to be an unusual hack, rubbing the ridge behind your ear creates an acupressure movement thought to be beneficial to sleep. So, simply rub the area in a circular motion around 100 to 200 times. The end result? Calming your nervous system to help you get ready for a great night of sleep in no time.

Try A Two Minute Foot Massage

With thousands of nerves in the feet alone, they are one of the best points to massage in order to help you drift off. Lie on your back so you can comfortably reach your feet and rub the sole of your foot between the base of your second toe and your heel. Use firm pressure and focus on this spot for two minutes, using both circular and up-and-down motions, for the ultimate foot massage technique to promote better sleep.

Train Your Brain To Follow Routine

Your brain picks up on patterns easily so get into the habit of doing the same activity before bed. Reading a book is a favourite one, naturally beginning to make you feel tired so you can unwind as it comes to bed time.

Although you’ve probably heard this advice before, make sure to ditch your phone before you head to bed as this will keep your brain alert and awake. Yep, that means no TikTok tips on getting better sleep in the lead up to lying down.

Follow The 4-7-8 Method

The 4-7-8 method a popular breathing technique for a quicker doze, as focusing your mind on your breathing pattern can really help the body drift off into a restful sleep.

The process is simple; breathe in through your nose for four seconds, hold your breath for seven seconds, then release it through your mouth for eight seconds. Repeat this process four times before you go to sleep and see the difference for yourself.

Try Some Simple Yoga Positions

You don’t have to be an experienced yoga fan to feel the benefits of this ancient practice. Set up your yoga mat near the wall and scoot your butt as close to the wall as you can, letting your legs straighten on the wall with your feet up toward the ceiling. Stay here and breathe deeply for at least a minute before snuggling up in bed.

If that’s hit the spot for you, then you’ll find some more great stretches to try after a long day in the office here.

Take The Pressure Off Your Brain

We’ve all been there, counting down the amount of hours we have left before our alarm goes off. Putting pressure on yourself to sleep can make you more anxious about falling asleep for the night and ironically keep you up for longer. If that sounds like you, TikTok users suggests that you try tricking your brain into letting you rest by telling yourself you’re just taking a nap.

Escape The Big Apple: 5 Of The Best Day Trips In New York State

‘’New York, New York, it’s a wonderful town.’’

Whilst Sinatra certainly had it right when he sang that perky paean to The Big Apple in the 1949 smash film On The Town, there are times when New York can feel a little stifling, let’s be honest.

Because when you’re living in the city that never sleeps, that frantic, always-on attitude can get a little wearying. Sometimes it feels like the original lyrics, that New York is ‘one hell of a town’, might have been more accurate.

For those moments when you need to escape The Big Apple, frolic amongst the trees, skinny dip in a deep ravine, and breathe in some fresh air free from exhaust fumes, here are 5 of the best day trips in New York State.

Big Indian Wilderness, Claryville

140 miles north of Manhattan

If you find that rocking up to Momofuku Ssam Bar and ordering a pork bao bun is just too easy, and you’re keen to get more in touch with your primitive side, catching dinner with your bare hands and sleeping out under the stars, then the Big Indian Wilderness in Claryville is where you should be headed.

33’500 acres of gorgeous virgin forest, complete with eight prominent mountain peaks and a whole host of amazing trails, will have you forgetting all about life back in New York. And if it’s hunting you’re after, then the nature reserve is open to hunting and trapping within season, though you’ll of course need a licence alongside additional annual hunting privileges, permits and stamps.

Sounds like a lot of bother, don’t you think? For something a little more cerebral, the trout fishing at the Big Indian Wilderness is superb, with the headwaters of the Esopus Creek, the Beaverkill, the Neversink and the Willowemoc boasting some of the finest trout fisheries in all of the Catskills. Again, you’ll need a licence, though.

Alternatively, you could just enjoy the serenity of this sprawling expanse, with wild camping incredibly popular here if you’re keen to turn this day trip into a longer adventure. If you fancy a few more modcons, there are plenty of glamping options in New York State, including in Big Indian.

It takes around three hours to drive from Manhattan to Big Indian Wilderness. Alternatively, you could catch a bus from Port Authority Bus Terminal, which run three times a day, and should get you to Big Indian in around three and a half hours. You may need to change at West Hurley.

Brotherhood Winery, Washingtonville

57 miles north of Manhattan

If you’d rather kick back with a glass or two, America’s Oldest Winery is just a cork’s throw from New York City. The Brotherhood Winery was founded in 1839 and offers tours of the estate’s underground cellars as well as guided tasting sessions for those who like to compare bouquet, nose, effervescence and transparency.

And the good news just gets better; a tour and tasting at the Brotherhood Winery is remarkable value, costing just $25 per person.

The winery is around an hour and a quarter’s drive from Manhattan. Should you be heading to the winery by public transport, your best option is to take the ShortLine Hudson 1711 bus from Broadway & W 167th St towards Montgomery. When you get to Washingtonville, alight at the Municipal Parking Lot on West Main Street. From there, the winery is a short walk.

Bear Mountain State Park, Rockland and Orange Counties

40 miles north of Manhattan

Bear Mountain State Park is a sprawling 5000 acre park boasting a wide range of activities, with swimming (both freshwater and in the dedicated swimming pool), biking, hiking, boating, and even sledding, skiing and ice skating, all taking place on the banks of the Hudson River.

If that all sounds a little high octane for someone simply looking to escape the city for a while, then fear not; there’s even a cute little zoo here, and an inn with its own eatery, Restaurant 1915, for those looking to indulge in some creature comforts in a laid back setting.

Bear Mountain State Park is around an hour’s drive from Manhattan. If you’re planning to travel here by train, you can take the Metro-North from Grand Central Terminal to Peekskill station, and then take a taxi across the river to the park. The cab should set you back around $30 one way.

Cold Spring, Putnam County

45 miles north of Manhattan

If you’re keen to escape the Big Apple but still enjoy some semblance of ‘urban’ living, with shops, restaurants and bars, then perhaps Cold Spring, a faithfully preserved 19th century village in the town of Philipstown, might be just what you’re looking for?

Visiting this hugely picturesque place is a wonderful way to spend a day, with a centre characterised by beautifully manicured gardens, boutique shops, hip art galleries and antiques stores, many of which can be found along Main Street.

Make sure you visit the Magazzino Italian Art museum and research centre while you’re here, which exhibits lots of fantastic post-war Italian art and sculpture, before enjoying some superb seafood at Hudson House. The New England lobster and avocado roll is superb! For afters, Moo Moo’s Creamery and its luscious ice cream is something of an institution round these parts.

But that’s not all; Cold Spring is home to a gorgeous riverside park, with hiking and biking trails, as well as water sports, all available.

The drive from Manhattan to Cold Spring takes roughly an hour. Alternatively, hourly trains run from Harlem 125 St to Cold Spring, with the journey direct and taking just over an hour.

Storm King Art Center, New Windsor

57 miles north of Manhattan

The open air museum, art gallery, sculpture garden and exhibition space known as Storm King Art Center (owing to its proximity to the mountain Storm King) boasts the largest collection of outdoor installations in the entire United States.

Open since 1960 and home to more than 100 sculptures at any one time, it’s a gorgeous, relaxing place to spend time, sprawling over 500 acres and looking out and over the Hudson Valley.

In fact, it takes around three hours to explore the whole grounds, and that’s not taking into account the time you’ll need to stop, stroke your chin, stare into the middle distance and ponder the meaning of each piece within the gardens.

Right now, there are works by Wangechi Mutu, Brandon Ndife, Sarah Sze and Louise Bourgeois, amongst others, with the sculpture all the more captivating for its verdant backdrop.

The drive from Manhattan to Storm King shouldn’t take much over an hour. If you’re looking to use public transport, head to the Port Authority Bus Terminal just off Times Square. Find Platform 410, and take the ShortLine Hudson 709 towards Mountainville. You’ll reach the Storm King Centre in an hour and twenty minutes.

Booking in advance is well recommended; general admission starts at $23 a person.

7 Nature-Friendly Camping Tips for This Spring

What makes camping such a wonderful experience is the opportunity to step away from all the demands of everyday life and get a chance to relax and unwind. It allows you to enjoy the wonders of nature, as well as the companionship of friends and family. And unlike expensive vacations in remote locations, camping is easily accessible to anyone. All you need is some basic equipment and a good camping site.

As you get closer to nature, you will have to learn how to live in harmony with it. In the end, we all are responsible for the pristine environment, so we should do our best to keep it clean. To do so while camping, you should stick to reusable dishes, prepare meals yourself, use natural cleaning supplies, and camp in designated areas, among other things. As you plan your next camping trip, make sure you follow the environmentally-friendly camping tips described below.

Pick the Right Gear

The gear you will need while camping depends on your preferred camping style. However, one thing is certain: don’t bring anything that isn’t absolutely necessary. This means that you should avoid taking any luxury items and gadgets with you; instead, focus on things that will add to your comfort and convenience.

On top of that, you can limit your impact on the environment by choosing sustainable solutions. For example, a solar generator for camping trips is a great alternative to traditional batteries, as it allows you to recharge the necessary devices using a renewable energy source. Moreover, instead of buying brand new camping gear, you can easily find second-hand equipment, which will be as good as new and much cheaper.

Stick to Reusable Dishes

If you plan to eat meals at the camp, it is much better to bring your own dishes. This will not only help you avoid using disposable plastics but also reduce the overall amount of trash you produce. Dishes made out of paper and cardboard are an excellent choice if you are planning a short stay, as they are lightweight and biodegradable. Metal or wood bowls are a better choice, however, as they are much more durable and easier to clean and can serve you for a longer time.

Prepare Meals Yourself

Preparing meals yourself is a great way to reduce waste and lower your carbon footprint. There are plenty of easy camping recipes you can try, such as omelets, stir-fries, chili, and so much more. Just make sure you use fresh ingredients and refrain from eating too much meat, as it is a resource-intensive product.

When preparing for the trip, consider getting organic foods. Not only are they often healthier alternatives to processed ingredients, but they are also grown without the use of chemicals and pesticides, making them much more environmentally friendly.

Use Natural Cleaning Supplies

When it comes to cleaning, a good way to use fewer chemicals is to opt for natural cleaning supplies. Vinegar, baking soda, and lemon are just as effective and more eco-friendly alternatives to harsh chemical cleaners. You can also add some essential oils, such as lavender, eucalyptus, thyme, and peppermint, to give them a more pleasant scent.

Needless to say, you should stay away from any strong disinfectants, as they can be really harmful to the environment as well as your health. The same goes for body products, so make sure to bring biodegradable soaps and shampoos.

Camp in Designated Areas

Camping in the wilderness provides the opportunity to see the most beautiful wonders of Mother Nature. However, if you want to make sure you don’t damage the environment, it is vital to camp in designated areas only. Otherwise, you risk scaring away animals, disrupting their usual habits, and posing a general threat to everything around you, especially if you plan a campfire.

There are numerous campgrounds located near trails and actual wilderness, so you can enjoy the beauty of nature without spoiling it, not to mention that such sites are often safer and more convenient than wild camping.

Make Your Campfire Safe

Campfires are an inseparable part of camping. However, if you want to keep them safe, it is essential to follow some basic rules. First and foremost, never leave a campfire unattended. This means that you should always make sure it is completely out before going to sleep or leaving. And if you use firewood, collect it from the ground and not from living trees.

To ensure you have a safe fire, it is essential to clear the area of all dry materials. Also, keep the fire in a pit that has been dug for that purpose. And, if possible, add some fireproof materials, such as sand or clay, around the campfire and then use it to put out the fire to minimize the risk of spreading.

Dispose of Waste Properly

The next time you go camping, avoid using plastic bags and throw your trash in the designated bins. This way, it will be easier to sort it out and limit the amount of waste going to the landfill. In addition, you should consider bringing reusable containers with you, so you can carry everything you need rather than use disposables.

If possible, try to avoid burning any trash, as it can cause wildfires. The same goes for glass bottles, so make sure you rinse them out before putting them in the recycling bin. Also, as tempting as it may seem, don’t try to get rid of food waste by throwing it away. Instead, look for a dumpster near your campsite and dispose of it there.

To Sum Up

Camping is a great way to enjoy the wonders of nature and spend some quality time with your loved ones. However, if you want to minimize your impact on the environment, you should follow these environmentally-friendly camping tips.

For example, use reusable dishes and avoid taking any disposable items with you. Also, cook your own meals and choose natural cleaning supplies. And if you are planning a fire, make sure you are safe and dispose of waste properly.

If you are planning a trip, make sure to use these guidelines for a greener camping experience.

4 Elegant and Sophisticated Gift Ideas for Your Best Friend

IDEAL for meeting their exacting standards…

Hands up who’s got a best friend who is stylish, distinguished and discerning?

Now, hands up who’s got a best friend who’s impossibly difficult to buy gifts for?

Yep, we’re seeing the exact same number of hands raised sky high. And what beautifully manicured hands they are, we might add…

It can be tough to shop for a best friend who is so discerning (and, sometimes, a little picky) about cosmetics, fashion, flowers, and pampering products, but that shouldn’t mean that your best friend simply receives a card each year for their birthday. Instead, here are 4 elegant and sophisticated ideas for your best friend, IDEAL for meeting their exacting standards.

Splurge on High-End Cosmetics

While your best friend may wear makeup regularly, it doesn’t mean she treats herself to luxury or high-end cosmetics with the same consistency. After all, splurging on such items can feel frivolous, and in the current climate of fast rising costs, it can be hard to justify such purchases.

So, why not give her something really special that she will cherish (and perhaps think of you!) each time she uses it? High-end cosmetics tend to last longer since you require less of the product itself, as they boast the most cutting edge, high-quality ingredients, meaning it might not be such a frivolous investment after all.

Some of the more popular high-end brands to check out include Charlotte Tilbury, Natasha Denona, Bobbi Brown, Dior, Chanel and Pat McGrath. Even if your bestie doesn’t wear a lot of makeup, you can always choose something like a tinted lip balm, a fabulous bronzer or a luxurious mascara to take her eyelashes to the next level.

Flowers Always Put a Smile on Someone’s Face

If your best friend is one of those women who seems to already have everything – and it sounds like they might be – then we know how difficult it can be to come up with a gift idea.

That’s when a gorgeous bouquet of carefully curated flowers comes to the rescue. The great thing about flowers is that they needn’t even be a birthday gift. If your friend is having a bad day, for instance, then ordering same day flowers means she will have something fresh, fragrant, and fabulous to cheer her up.

These arrangements may also allow you to choose a decorative vase to send them in, making even more of an impression. Just make sure you bear in mind the season, as well as her favourite colours and scents.

Suddenly, we’re wishing you were our best friend, too…

Luxury Scented Candles Will Elevate Her Home

Speaking of wonderful, encapsulating aromas, another elegant gift idea is luxury scented candles. We’re not talking about the kind that you find at a big box store; instead, they should feature premium ingredients that will provide the ultimate throw and burn time, and that remarkably satisfying heft when you pick them up.

A high-quality scented candle can last months, depending on use, and can be strong enough to fill many rooms with the scent. You could always put together a gift basket with a selection of candles with your best friend’s favourite scented candle aromas. Depending on your budget, you may want to add scented hand soap to go along with them.

Some of our favourite high quality scented candle brands and makers include NEOM, Anthropologie, Urban Apothecary, Jo Malone and The White Company.

A Sumptuous Lounge Wear Set – Comfortable and Stylish

Then we’ve got loungewear, which anyone can make use of. However, don’t just go for any loungewear – look for a set that is made from elegant fabric so it will feel luxurious against her skin. There’s a good chance she will love the loungewear set so much that she’ll want to wear it day and night. And hey; what’s wrong with that?

We just love the loungewear from Joseph, Baserange, Live The Process, Whistles, and Arket.

The Bottom Line

No matter which gift you end up choosing from this list, they will all ooze elegance and sophistication, hitting the mark beautifully and putting a big smile on your best friend’s face.

5 REASONS TO BUY OR HIRE A MINIBUS FOR YOUR NEXT FAMILY CAMPING TRIP

Holidays in the UK, who’d want them hey? Well, us, quite frankly. Sure, we’re not blessed with a daily dose of sun, and sure, we don’t boast the very finest of the continental culture which we’ve taken for granted for so long, and sure, our cuisine isn’t the most lauded or applauded, but our shores still have plenty to offer.

Some of the best bits of a British holiday are most brilliantly realised on an old school, family friendly camping trip. We get to deploy our stiffest upper lip at the inclement weather, we can luxuriate in some Great British bangers thrown on the barbie, and we’re able to curtain twitch at our neighbours from a whole new vantage point; through the netted entrance to our tent.

In all honesty, camping in the Great British countryside does genuinely have plenty of upsides, blessed with picture-perfect villages, stunning natural scenery and a can-do, anything goes spirit that fits the rustic alfresco vibes perfectly.

If you’re planning on taking your family on such a trip this summer and you’re looking to reduce the stress levels, then have you considered hiring a minibus for such an adventure? Doing so can make the whole trip run much more smoothly, and with that in mind, here are 5 reasons to hire a minibus for your next family camping trip.

LESS STRESS WITH KIDS

‘Are we there yet?’ Well, no, we’ll never get there, because life is an existential journey whose only true destination is something we’re not going to go into right now, darling. But anyway, no. We’re not there yet.

Long road trips, especially with kids can become tiresome in an uncomfortable vehicle, but that isn’t something you’ll have to worry about in a minibus, which provides ample space, excellent seating, and versatility – meaning your children don’t have to sit next to each other if they don’t want to.

Anyone with a large family knows that comfort in the car is paramount to any journey, whether short or long. There is nothing worse than uncomfortable, irritable and whinging children (and grownups) in a small space while on a road trip or family journey. Talk about killing the spontaneity of the open road!

This can be eliminated by considering a spacious and comfortable minibus with adjustable seats, air conditioning and additional safety features.

YOU CAN MAKE IT A GROUP HOLIDAY

A holiday with just your family can, well, be a little boring (sorry if you’re reading this guys!). You do spend every day together after all.

After a while on the road, the kids miss their friends, you miss having time without your kids, and everything starts to feel a little claustrophobic. The great thing about hiring a minibus, however, is that when using one, things can easily be made into a group holiday, with friends onboard and fun to be had.

As the experts at theminibuscentre.com point out, generally in the UK, larger minibuses can accommodate up to 17 people, plus additional space for four wheelchair users, with all the accessibility equipment coming as part of the package. This means your camping holiday can be a broad, exclusive one.

While a group holiday probably means more children, it also means more adults. You can even take it in turns driving the minibus with other adults in the group, giving you some much needed relaxation time! Alternatively, you could, of course, take a load off entirely and hire a minibus with a driver. What luxury!

RAINY DAYS ARE A BREEZE

If you’ve ever camped in the UK, then you’ve no doubt spent plenty of time taking shelter in your car, all crammed together and a little bit soggy while the seemingly never ending deluge continues outside.

Sure, you can pretend you’re enjoying it, perhaps even turn the radio up extra loud and have a singalong, but being cold and wet in a car isn’t fun, let’s be honest.

Should a storm strike on your family camping trip when you’ve got a minibus close to hand, you can simply decamp to the safety of the vehicle with enough room to stretch out until the rain passes.

You can even host a tea party, enjoy your dinner in safety, or play a few board games to pass the time, all with enough elbow room to avoid any grumpiness in the little (and larger) ones!

YOU CAN PACK EVERYTHING YOU NEED

One of the hardest parts of packing for any family holiday is deciding what to take and what not to take. Prior to parenthood, no one warned us about the amount of stuff you’d need to get through just one day with kids. Let alone, a whole damn holiday with the family. And on a camping trip, the need to find room for ‘stuff’ is amplified tenfold.

Not with a minibus. Overhead storage bins are perfect for ping pong rackets, a boules set, and other sporting equipment that will keep the kids entertained, and, more importantly, tired out.

In addition, smaller storage is available under the seats, as well as larger storage options in the back, the whole family will be able to enjoy travelling without being packed in like sardines among all of your bags.

YOU CAN TRAVEL IN STYLE

Goodbye Eye Spy; hello, proper in-vehicle entertainment!

Whilst we wouldn’t dream of knocking all the old-school games we used to love playing in the car, if you’re keen to diversify your entertainment options onboard, then you’ll be pleased to hear that you can rent minibuses that are appointed with all the latest tech.

Think high quality music systems, built in TVs, a coffee and drinks machine, mini fridges, drop down screens with gaming options, swivelling leather armchairs…the works!

Sorry, we got a bit over excited there. And we think you might too, if you hire a minibus for your next family camping trip. Bon voyage!

What Are The Best Cars For Taxis?

0

Choosing the best cars for your taxi service can be difficult, and yet is an integral part of setting your business up for success. Therefore, if you are unsure what the best options for you to choose are, here is a guide to the best cars that you can use within your taxi service.

Citroen Berlingo

A Citroen Berlingo is an excellent option for taxicab drivers who are looking for a larger car to transport big groups of more than two or three people. This vehicle can allow you to expand and grow your business beyond the needs of small parties, while also ensuring that you do not find yourself at the petrol station every five seconds to fill up your car.

Ford Galaxy

Ford Galaxies have been used for work for a long time, with many people using them instead of vans, as well as to transport customers from A to B by offering them a taxi service. You should also know that a Ford Galaxy has a large boot, meaning that they make excellent vehicles for services that offer airport transfers or those in tourist locations, where your customers might have a lot of luggage with them when they book your vehicle. If you believe that a Ford Galaxy can suit your needs, you should consider looking around for a good deal on them, with second-hand options being incredibly affordable

Ford Fusion

If you are looking for a more traditional option, you might consider opting for a Ford Fusion, which customers usually decide to purchase in black. A Ford Fusion can make a great and reliable transport option for those who will regularly be driving long distances, and it is one of the most popular vehicles with Uber drivers, meaning that you cannot go wrong with it, and that people will instantly know that you are a taxi as soon as they set eyes on your vehicle.

Toyota Prius

Many cab drivers want to get a Toyota Prius in their fleet because they are incredibly safe cars, which are also eco-friendly and fuel-efficient. They are extremely modern, will last you a long time, and you’ll have no fears that they will suddenly break down, as taxi drivers and others in the transport profession have been relying on this model for a long time. Therefore, if you haven’t already, you should consider adding a Toyota Prius to your fleet.

Good vehicles can be the difference between success and failure when you have your own taxi company, and by following this guide, you will be ensuring that you can find spacious and reliable vehicles that both you and your passengers will adore.

TUMMY TROUBLES? 6 EXPERT-BACKED WAYS TO LOVE YOUR GUT THIS YEAR

0

Ideal for for improving your gut health

The 2022 reboot of ‘You Are What You Eat’ reminded us all how about the importance not only of what goes into the body, but also, what comes out of it.

Around four in ten people struggle with uncomfortable gut and digestive-related problems. And with UK Google searches for ‘gut health’ up by 83%, it’s certainly looking like an issue that isn’t going to simply go away.

Research has also shown that gut bacteria could influence the severity of Covid-19 infections and the body’s immune response, making it even more important to pay attention to every gurgle.

But the good news is that simple mealtime switches could improve gut health. And with 41% of Brits hoping to improve their diet this year, with the help of Dr Gill Hart, scientific director at food intolerance specialist YorkTest, here are 6 expert-backed ways to love your gut this year.

TAKE YOUR TIME

Perhaps the easiest tip to implement into any daily routine is to slow down your mealtimes. Properly chewing food helps to break it down which, in turn, removes any additional strain on the digestive system.

A stressed stomach will lead to indigestion, cramps, and bloating. Instead, a meal that’s been chewed thoroughly will pass through the gut more efficiently, and could also help with nutrient absorption.

Eating slowly and mindfully also ensures you’re more satisfied after each meal. It can take around 20 minutes for the gut to tell the brain it’s full, so giving it more time to communicate can also stop any uncomfortable overeating – perfect for any fitness goals this new year.

Ideal tip: Eliminate all distractions from the dinner table. So, phones placed well out of reach, T.Vs off and work laptops banned. Instead, make your dining experience more pleasurable  – light some candles for dinner, put on some chilled music and concentrate on your meal.

MAKE SUGAR SWAPS

Try to reduce your refined sugar intake to boost your gut’s good bacteria. Excessive sugar promotes the growth of unwanted bacteria which results in digestive discomfort.

Lowering the amount of sugar you consume also can have a number of wider health benefits, including fewer trips to the dentist and more stable energy levels, making those dreaded afternoon slumps less frequent.

Ideal tip: Many breakfast cereals are high in sugar. Switch to a lower-sugar cereal like Weetabix or plain porridge. We know, it’s a little boring, so add a banana or some dried apricots for a dose of sweetness.

INTRODUCE FERMENTED FOODS

Fermentation is a food processing technique that encourages controlled growth of good bacteria, breaking down sugars and turning them into sour-tastic compounds such as acids, gasses or, sometimes, alcohol. Originally used to preserve food for longer, it’s become increasingly popular recently thanks to its unique, tangy taste and potential health benefits.

Read: 5 reasons to include fermented foods full of probiotics in your diet this year

Foods in this group include sourdough bread, sauerkraut, pickles, kimchi and vegan staple, tempeh. Each of these dishes is packed with gut-friendly enzymes, vitamins and probiotics that help to maintain a balanced digestive tract.

These foods have also already been partially broken down by the bacteria, so just like chewing your food slowly, fermented foods reduce unnecessary digestive strain. Growing in popularity, many fermented foods are available in all grocery stores and supermarkets – or you can even make your own.

Ideal tip: Keep a packet of unpasteurised kimchi in your refrigerator. A kimchi cheese toastie for lunch is a wonderful thing!

THINK ABOUT FIBRE

There are many reasons why fibre is an essential ingredient for gut health. Like water, it helps to keep bowel movements regular and soft, so waste can pass through the body easily.

Fibre also helps to feed the good bacteria in your gut, keeping your digestive system and wider body healthy.

There are lots of ways to boost your fibre intake and it’s found in lots of delicious foods, including beans and pulses, broccoli, berries, apples, dried fruits, wholegrains and oats.

Making fibre-rich bakes has been identified as one of 2022’s biggest baking trends, while the Food and Drink Federation launched an initiative to boost fibre intake last September. This is good news for your gut, and your taste buds – so on your marks, get set, bake!

Ideal tip: Stock up your store cupboard with ingredients for fibre rich bakes. Having those ingredients always on hand at home can motivate you to bake more.

STAY HYDRATED

Drinking plenty of water is good for the gut – as well as regulating function, staying hydrated encourages healthy bowel movements which flush the body of toxins, keeping common stomach complaints at bay.

Ideal tip: Keep a jug of water by bed and as soon as you wake up, glug that guy merrily. Not only is it a great way to up your water intake, after a long rest, your body will appreciate the hydration.

LISTEN TO YOUR GUT

More and more researchers are identifying the link between the gut and the brain. External stress can often lead to digestive complaints, while an imbalance of bad bacteria in your stomach can also cause your emotions to seesaw.

The best advice for anyone who wants to improve their gut health is to understand their own personal triggers – whether that’s food or certain events. While refining your lifestyle, learning about your body’s specific intolerances can help to make informed choices that work for your mind, body and gut.

And with that, let’s keep the gut train gurgling; check out why probiotics could be an important part of a healthy lifestyle.

Is A Mortgage The Right Choice For Me? Everything You Need To Know In 2022

Taking out a mortgage is one of life’s biggest decisions and not a shout to be taken lightly or something that should be rushed. It is also a significant financial commitment, and contrary to popular belief, isn’t suitable for everyone. Indeed, prior to making such a decision, you should make sure that getting a mortgage is the right choice for your budget and income.

Knowing how to make the mortgage application process easier, as well as examining your other options, will make the whole journey easier and, potentially, more financially beneficial. If you’re wondering if a mortgage is the right choice for you, then here is everything you need to know in 2022.

Finding A Mortgage Lender

If you are ready to apply for a mortgage, you should shop around for the best lenders in terms of suitability with your current credit score. In simple terms, if your credit score is high, you will have a larger selection of lenders to choose from.

That said, do not immediately panic if you get rejected despite your having a high credit score, as other things can affect it, such as the number of loans you have applied for within the last year, and even being linked to someone with a poor credit score (like an ex-partner who you shared an account with). In fact, three credit reference agencies, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, hold financial information on your associates.

All hope is not lost even if you do currently suffer from bad credit, as providers exist who can help facilitate a bad credit mortgage, increasing your chances of being accepted.

Understanding Your Credit Score

As we mentioned, your credit score has a significant impact on your mortgage decision, so you should understand how it works and how you can improve it. Download a free credit checker, such as Credit Karma or Experian, as these can provide you with further information on your credit score, as well as being able to see your credit history, and even suggestions on how to improve it.

Each credit company has a slightly different idea of what a good score is, so do not be too downtrodden if one agency suggests you have a lower score than another agency.

You can always use a few different apps and see how your score lines up. Your credit score and report are what a mortgage lender will see when they process your application, so you want to make sure it looks good, as part of the decision process will hinge on this.

Read: The IDEAL guide to getting to grips with your credit score

Start Reducing Your Debts

If you’re still keen on applying for a mortgage, the first thing you should look at doing is reducing any debts that you have. Potential lenders are less likely to accept you if you have lots of money on credit cards and loans that are being repaid. Generally speaking, if you’re using any more than a third of your credit limit (say, more than £1000 of a credit card with a maximum limit of £3000), then lenders may well view this as a red flag.

Missed direct debits, defaults, and bounced cheques will all tell a similar story.

Look at paying off anything you can to improve the impression of you being a financially literate and responsible person; even paying down phone contracts or higher purchase agreements can help. It might be worth waiting until you are near the end of these agreements before applying for a mortgage.

If you own a car on an agreement, it may be worth trying to sell your car and getting a cheaper one that is not on finance. Paying big purchases off early can look good to lenders but paying off too early means you skip some of the interest, which could put some lenders off.

Calculate Your Living Costs

There is no use applying for a mortgage if you are not going to be able to make the repayments (plus interest), along with all your other living costs.

Creating a budget will help you figure out what kind of mortgage is within your budget, how long you will need to borrow for, and how much you can pay each month. Factor in the costs of fuel, transport, subscriptions, energy and water bills, council tax, food, and anything else you usually spend money on. If you have never owned a home, sit down with a friend or relative and go through their usual payments to give you a rough idea.

It can be helpful to print out your last 6 months’ worth of bank statements and go through them. Look at what costs are necessary to live, and what costs could be cut down. You may want to limit the amount you buy takeaway or cancel your phone contract and get a pay-as-you-go deal.

Don’t Switch Jobs

Starting a new job right before applying for a mortgage is not recommended, as some lenders will not accept you during a probationary period in your working contract. Most probationary periods last between 3 and 6 months depending on the employer. Even if your new job is higher paid, this will not necessarily have a positive impact on your application, unless you have been there for a substantial amount of time.

Lenders usually go off your last 3 or 6 months income rather than your expected income. If you do have a new job on the horizon, hold off on your mortgage application until things have settled. However exciting it may be to apply, you do not want to increase your chances of being rejected.

Get On The Electoral Register

Because if you’re not on it, you have absolutely now chance of getting a mortgage, even if your credit is in tip top shape.

Don’t worry, you don’t actually have to vote (though, with the mess the country is currently in, you probably should), but being on the electoral register simply demonstrates that you’re actually who you say you are. Fraud and money laundering are such big concerns for lenders that they use the electoral roll to perform identity checks. If you’re not on it, you can register on the electoral role for free.

Getting Your Documents Ready

When you apply for a mortgage, you will be asked to provide proof of income. This is usually a P60, so ask your employer for one if you do not have one already. Sometimes this can take time to get, so doing it beforehand will ensure your documents are ready when it comes to the application stage.

Many lenders also ask for bank statements, so you should start cutting down on unnecessary spending, as this can impact their decision. If you are never left with any money after payday, they are less likely to accept you. Start a savings account, too, and try to save as much as you can into it every month. This will help with the deposit payment, too.

Read: Saving money for a house deposit

For the self-employed, lenders will ask for an SA302 form. This relates to your last 3 years of trade as a self-employed individual. They may also ask for copies of your full accounts. Starting a business right before getting a mortgage is not a clever idea, as most lenders want to see a few years of growth and profit to consider lending.

Alternatives To Mortgages

Getting a mortgage is perhaps the easiest and safest option when it comes to buying a home, but there are alternatives available for those who want to know all options.

One way is to borrow from another provider or a family member or friend. If you decide to go down this road, make sure that you write up a formal agreement that can be signed by a lawyer. The last thing you want is money coming between you and your family members.

Some homes and flats have a rent-to-own, or shared ownership, scheme. This allows you to buy a share of a property (usually between 10% and 75%) and pay rent on the remaining share. You can then increase your share gradually, which is known as staircasing.

You may also find that you’re able to utilise the UK government’s Help to Buy scheme, which in some cases can allow you to buy a property that is worth more, even if you don’t have enough of a deposit already saved up.

The Bottom Line

Mortgages are an excellent choice for those who want to get on the property ladder but do not have the cash to purchase a property outright. You can still get a mortgage if you have bad credit, but you should still look at improving your credit score for the future. If you need more help, speak to a mortgage broker or a financial advisor.

5 Ideal Gifts For Clergy

Have you ever been tasked with buying a gift for your priest from the parish women’s club you belong to? Perhaps it’s an anniversary of ordination or some other special event your pastor is celebrating and try as you might, you just can’t imagine what Father would like or even have use for.

If this task has fallen upon you this year and you’re feeling a little lost, then worry not, your prayers have been answered; here are some thoughts on what would make the ideal gift for clergy.

Framed Religious Artwork

While there are many religions that don’t agree with religious statues or art of any kind, many of the more Orthodox, Episcopal or Catholic faiths hold religious art in high esteem. They serve as reminders of the faith to which we hold fast, and many have personal significance.

As the experts at Holyart suggest, you should consider whether Father has a patron saint or a biblical scene of importance to him. Alternatively, they suggest that there are five key sacred objects that we should all have in our home; a crucifix, a religious picture, a sacred icon, a statue of the Virgin Mary, and The Sleeping Saint Joseph.

If you’re really stuck for a gift for clergy, then you can’t go wrong with a framed religious artwork featuring any of this imagery.

Hand-Embroidered Stole

A priest’s vestments consist of several traditional items with the stole perhaps being the most visible and, often, machine embroidered. If any of the ladies in your women’s guild are professional or hobbyist seamstresses also talented in needlework, perhaps a hand-embroidered stole would be the ideal gift.

Whether you purchase a ‘blank’ stole to be embroidered or have one handcrafted by the ladies in your group, this is something any priest would treasure and wear often when saying Mass.

Sports Related Items

What priest do you know that doesn’t like a bit of golf with his fellow clergymen from time to time? Some are even members of a local golf club, and who can resent them enjoying a bit of downtime?

Then again, with football being the most popular sport on earth, perhaps a ticket to a game would do nicely. Anything related to the sport your pastor is fond of would be an ideal gift, especially if he is a devoted fan, though perhaps it’s sensible to first check, as some folk simply don’t find sport enthralling at all.

Chalice, Paten and Ciborium Set

Even though priests say daily Mass at the parish, either in the church or chapel, they also celebrate liturgies outside the church as well. Sometimes priests celebrate home Masses for special celebrations hosted by parishioners and other times he will say Mass at a nursing home for those unable to attend Mass at church. A handmade wood or metal chalice, paten and ciborium set would make a lovely gift Father would be proud of.

Relics

These are often hard to come by but can often be found when visiting the Holy Land or Rome. Relics are tiny scraps of materials or even bone fragments said to be from an important saint of earlier eras. If you are seeking a relic for Father, do take the time to authenticate it. Unfortunately, even in matters of faith you will find fraud and that’s not something you’d want to give Father for an ideal gift celebrating an important event in his life.Good luck and we hope you choose a great gift!

7 Tasty Non-Alcoholic Drinks To Serve At Your Next Party

In the last study of its kind, back in 2019, it was revealed that nearly 30% of young people (aged 16-24) were teetotal, shunning alcohol entirely in favour of a healthier lifestyle and bank balance.

We can only imagine that ratio has since risen, as an interest in all things sober-curious spreads. All this means that, if you’re throwing a party soon, a proportion of your guests are likely to be eschewing the bevvy. But that shouldn’t mean their party experience is sidelined or treated as second fiddle. Instead, there are plenty of gorgeous, gratifying non-alcoholic drinks you can serve at your next party. Here are 7 of them.

Casamara Club Amaro Club Soda

If you want to try out something that resembles beer (due to the bottle’s appearance), but doesn’t actually contain it, then this might be the ideal choice for you.

So what does the Casamara Club Amaro Club Soda series contain?

Namely, they are loaded with sparkling amaro club sodas that do not have any alcohol but have a spirited, confident flavour reminiscent of a ‘proper’ drink. Additionally, the company has created four unusual yet totally delicious flavours, with the most popular being Capo’s honey-and-mint and Onda’s earthy citrus.

People who prefer nuanced flavours are going to love these, with the added bonus that Casamara Club Sodas don’t contain as much sugar as some other drinks in this marketplace do.

Oddabird Sparkling 0%

Do you love France and its food and wine? If the answer is yes, then firstly; welcome to the club. Secondly, should you be in the mood to test out something that’s a little different to your typical French wine, then sampling Oddabird’s non alcoholic wine is a great substitute.

For a drop with the tartness and sweetness of a glass of champers, then you’re going to fall in love with the company’s sparkling 0% wine.

We are not sure what the secret is behind this extraordinary drink, but what we do know is that Oddabird Sparkling boasts classical yeasty notes, a perfect level of sweetness and a refreshing green apple tartness.

And it’s because of this complexity that Oddabird Sparkling 0% is the ideal choice for a celebratory non-alcoholic drink.

Curious Elixirs

These are truly special. Curious Elixirs have made seven amazing craft cocktails, and each of them comes in sleek bottles or cans with that matte-finish beloved of hipster IPAs, putting the totally cool into teetotal. The idea here is to pay homage to some of the world’s most popular alcoholic beverages like Italian Spritz, French 75, and Negroni, but in a non-alcoholic form.

Although none of these drinks contain ingredients such as gin, champagne, and Campari, they will still remind you of these good old classics, and are perfect if you’re craving a cocktail but want to drink responsibly.

But the real twist with the Curious Elixir range is the soul-nourishing ingredient they add to each blend, harnessing the mysterious properties of plants to uplift, unwind and unfurl both body and mind.

Their Old Fashioned, for instance, contains smoked cherry chocolate that’s infused with ginger, said to boost immunity, and the plant shatavari, which is used in ancient medicine to restore balance. Wow!

Ghia

Ghia is designed as an aperitif, and consists of citrus, Riesling white grape juice, ginger, and several botanical extracts like lemon balm, elderflower, and gentian root.

What’s interesting is the fact that this beverage was apparently inspired both by the beloved Mediterranean culture of a pre-dinner drink and the herbal teas popular in many areas of the area. The herbs that can be found in these cocktails were actually added to enhance the flavour and relax your body and soul, which is what we all need right now, don’t you think?

Crodino Non-Alcoholic Aperitivo

You know how Italians have the tendency to just sigh and say “La dolce vita!” each time they’re having a good meal and an even better aperitivo. For those of you who would love to do the same but without tasting any alcohol, then do not hesitate to get yourself a bottle of Crodino.

This drink has some serious heritage; it was made over fifty years ago by Campari and many keen drinks enthusiasts consider this to be a perfect non-alcoholic substitute for Aperol. And just like this beverage, Crodino also has that tart citrus flavour, along with some bitterness which makes it the perfect drink for those looking for some intrigue from their glass.

This is one to be poured over ice and garnished with an orange wedge; just because we’re serving non-alcoholic drinks shouldn’t mean we don’t make an effort, after all.

Recess Infused Sparkling Water

How does a combination of a great taste, a chic look, and the potential to be a perfect mood booster sound? Well, Recess Infused Sparkling Water ticks all these boxes, with the interesting addition that the sparkling water contains a small amount of CBD.

Each of these sparkling waters boasts both hemp and adaptogens, and what’s great about it is the fact that every single one of them was made with organic ingredients only. For those of you who want to stop drinking coffee, or sodas that are loaded with sugar, then this is certainly one of the best choices out there for a soft drink with a difference.

For the time being, Recess boasts six flavours, including blood orange, pomegranate hibiscus, peach ginger, coconut lime, blackberry chai, and black cherry. Each of these cans has about thirty calories, up to six grams of carbohydrates, and approximately six grams of sugar. Additionally, one Recess can has about ten milligrams of cannabidiol. So, can you feel it kicking in?

Tost

Yep, we thought that said ‘toast’, too, at first, but no; it’s tost. If you’re a huge fan of ciders or a spritzer, then you just might well fall in love with this drink. This lovely-looking beverage is made from white tea, ginger, and cranberry and comes in a bottle that looks like it was designed for special occasions only.

And that wasn’t unintentional. Namely, this brand wanted to create something that is perfect for elegant dinners, but that doesn’t contain any alcohol. If that sounds like the kind of parties you like to throw, then make sure you’re serving Tost at your next one.

Speaking of which, here’s how to host the IDEAL foodie garden party this summer. Can we expect our invite in the post?

Interesting Birthday Traditions From Scandinavia

As Jo Cox once so eloquently put, ‘’we have more in common than that which divides us’’, and this is certainly true when considering the world’s birthday traditions, which are as fascinating as they are frivolous, and as distinctive as they are related.

This is even true in subregions, where traditions sometimes cross borders, but equally, are often wholly unique. Today, we’re considering the Nordic countries, and the ways in which they celebrate another year spent on this earth. With that in mind, here are some interesting birthday traditions from Scandinavia.

Denmark: Flags At The Ready

Flags make quite the appearance at a Dane’s birthday celebrations. As Scandinavian Standard explains “Not every country boasts such an unwavering love for their national flag as Denmark does.’’

And the Danish flag, known as the ‘The Dannebrog’, is particularly appropriate for marking birthdays, as it symbolises celebration and happiness, and it’s common to see the flag and its famous red and white adorning everything from birthday party invitations and cards to the cakes themselves. You might even see the flag in potted plants or on lawns to show revellers or guests the way to the party!

Even more fun is the miniature flagpole that decorates the birthday table in Denmark, making the celebrant feel like a seriously big deal.

Danish Cakes & Flowers

When you’re celebrating a birthday in Denmark, the expectation is that you get the drinks in, host the party, and even bring your own birthday cake to work.

But what cake, we hear you ask? Well, a layer cake is the common choice, often in the red and white of the Dannebrog. For children, a type of cake called Kagemand or Kagekone (‘cake man’ or ‘cake woman’) is popular. It’s simply a cake made in the shape of a person and, traditionally, the cake eating element of the birthday begins with the cake being decapitated, whilst the children scream and generally get overexcited.

Did you know that in Danish birthday flowers are called ‘blomster mors dag’ and ‘fødselsdags blomster’? Traditionally, birthday flowers come in the form of an elegant bouquet, full of purples, yellows and other royal colours. White roses should be avoided, as they are associated with mourning. Flowers are usually wrapped when given as a gift, with the preferred colour for wrapping paper being the red of the Danish flag.

How to say Happy Birthday in Danish: Gelukkige verjaardag

Denmark: Sun Salutations

In Denmark, you’re also considered responsible for the weather on your birthday, and considering the country is one of the coldest on earth, that certainly is some responsibility to bear!

Don’t be surprised if, when the sun is shining on your birthday, Danish people express their gratitude to you, saying ‘‘Thanks for the sunshine’’ or words to that effect. This is because Danish tradition dictates that the weather on your birthday reflects your behaviour over the past year.

Sweden: Birthdays In Bed

In Sweden, it’s traditional to wake the birthday boy/girl up, no matter how old they are, and serenade them with ‘Ja må du leva’ while they’re in bed. It’s also customary to have breakfast prepared and served to you in bed, and to open your birthday presents in bed, too, which sounds like heaven to us!

Similarly to Denmark, the colours of the Swedish flag, (blue and yellow) are used in the birthday party decor, and will often appear on the cake.

Swedish Cakes & Flowers

When it comes to cakes, the Princesstårta (Princess Cake) is by far the most popular confectionary to enjoy on birthdays in Sweden. This cake was named in honour of the three princesses, Margaretha (from Sweden), Martha (from Norway), and Astrid (Queen of the Belgians), and is a layered cake of sponge, pastry cream, raspberry jam and whipped cream.

The cake is covered by a layer of green marzipan, giving it a smooth, rounded top, and a truly distinctive appearance.

It’s not uncommon to give flowers to someone on their birthday in Sweden. If you’re going to send ‘födelsedagsblommor’, which means birthday flowers, then our friends from Bloom Post recommend sending Sunflowers, Mini Carnations, Gerbera Daisies, Snapdragons, Miniature Rose and Cyclamens.

Norway: A Unique Birthday Song

The Norwegian birthday song, ‘Hurra for deg’, is a riotous, uplifting affair, which sees friends, family or coworkers form a circle around the birthday boy or girl and sing the song.

The guys at Life In Norway break down the lyrics here:

Hurra for deg som fyller ditt år!

Ja, deg vil vi gratulere!

Alle i ring omkring deg vi står,

og se, nå vil vi marsjere,

bukke, nikke, neie, snu oss omkring,

danse for deg med hopp og sprett og spring,

ønske deg av hjertet alle gode ting!

Og si meg så, hva vil du mere?

Gratulere!

Which translates as,

Hurray for you for celebrating your birthday!

Yes, we congratulate you!

We all stand around you in a ring,

And look, now we’ll march,

Bow, nod, curtsy, we turn around,

Dance for you and hop and skip and jump!

Wishing you from the heart all good things!

And tell me, what more could you want?

Congratulations!

As you can tell from the lyrics, there’s plenty of action to go with this merry tune, and the birthday party usually perform them with gusto.

Norwegian Cakes & Flowers

A type of sponge cake known as Bløtkake is a popular choice for birthday cake in Norway. In fact, it’s also served on the 17th May, Norway’s national day.

Here, several layers of light sponge are sandwiched around jam, custard and whipped cream, before being covered entirely with more whipped cream. Then, fresh fruits are used to adorn the cake. And guess what colours those fruit should be? Yep, the colours of the Norwegian flag; that’s red and blue. Usually, strawberries and blueberries are used.

It should be noted that certain types of flowers should be avoided for celebrations in Norway; lilies, carnations, white flowers, wreaths and any others associated with funerals aren’t appropriate for birthdays.

Round Birthdays

In all three countries, birthdays with round numbers (20, 30, 40…) have particular significance, and are observed in a much more enthusiastic manner, with all the usual traditions turned up several notches, and an extra effort made to truly celebrate the birthday in style.

A Conversation With Paola Farina: The Ideal Reasons To Hire A Personal Stylist

How we dress and how we express ourselves are so intertwined that it can sometimes be hard to know where one ends and the other begins.

Indeed, the clothes we wear (and the ones we don’t) play a key role in asserting our personality, able to bring swagger, confidence, elegance and glamour, all at the simple unbuttoning of a suit jacket or the tightening of a belt buckle.

But choosing what to wear and how to wear it can be so tricky when you’re so invested in the decision. That’s where a personal stylist comes in. Once a role reserved for the stars, more and more people are now choosing to avail themselves of the services of a stylist in order to get their look – and attitude – just right.

Today, we’re speaking to Paola Farina, a personal stylist with a unique talent, about how she can help you realise your aesthetic vision, and the IDEAL reasons to hire a personal stylist. Let’s explore further.

Who Is Paola Farina?

Paola Farina started her career in fashion in 2000 and founded her own company, Paola Farina Styling, at the end of 2018, after a fruitful experience as a consultant for communication and events at Sky Italia and Elsevier.

Paola Farina certainly knows her stuff when it comes to fashion, with certification from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, plus several other stints across the globe in key fashion houses. All of this has given her the tools required to excel as a personal stylist, image consultant and shopping assistant.

Her services are requested by individuals as well as by renowned companies. She has worked with groups such as Mondadori and Condé Nast, as well as numerous online portals, from MTV to TgCom. Today, she is based in Milan and works as a personal stylist to celebrities and mere mortals, alike. She also offers services to third parties around the world through her online presence and social networks.

Now that we’ve all got acquainted, let’s take a closer look at those IDEAL reasons to hire a personal stylist like Paola.

Sartorial Makeover

Many seek the advice of a personal stylist in revising your wardrobe and adding outfits that enhance their own personal style. A personal stylist is the ideal person to help you stand out from the crowd if you’ve decided to ‘rebrand’, helping you choose a new wardrobe that’s both synergetic and unique.

As we all know too well, a sudden, drastic change in personal style can often lead to jarring visual results. But a personal stylist will help guide you through this process gradually and seamlessly, able to consider your body type, face shape, unique colouring and more, before deciding on a new sartorial style that will complement you and only you.

As Paola tells us, ‘’A personal stylist is first and foremost a fashion stylist. It is not about making or creating new models for you. Rather, it will be a question of identifying, using ingenuity, the type of outfit and accessories you need for each of your trips, whatever they may be. The choice of clothes will be made from a morphological and colorimetric analysis of which she holds the secret.’’

We couldn’t agree more.

Image Consulting

If a person’s clothing style says a lot about their personality, it is the same for a company and the image it conveys to the outside world.

Yep, personal stylists don’t just style individuals, believe it or not. Image consulting is a major part of the job description too, and a key skill of the personal stylist.

In some cases, the very best personal stylists are given the chance to enhance the image of a company, a structure or an association via their clothing choices, as well as their hair, make-up and even the decor of their office.

As Paola says, a great personal stylist ‘’is able to study customised solutions to expose the image of a company in the best possible way. It is often a mistake for many to think that the services mentioned here are only for a reserved category of individual. Hiring a personal stylist is in itself a better investment with multiple benefits, both on a personal and team level’’.

Accordingly, if you’re part of a company looking to refresh their image, enlisting the services of a personal stylist is a wise move.

Express Shopping

Picture this; you have a job interview. You’re wearing your finest, sharpest white shirt whilst simultaneously savouring your usual caffeine-based pick-me-up and practising your well-rehearsed lines. We all know what happens next.

Instead of arriving at the interview wearing a massive coffee stain and a look of embarrassment, a personal stylist can be your knight in shining armour, using their access to express shopping and their connections across the city to deliver you a brand new sparkling white shirt in your ideal shape, size and style.

An Implicit Knowledge Of What Goes Together

Of course, one of the key skills of a personal stylist that sets them apart from, well, you simply looking in the mirror and deciding what to wear, is their implicit knowledge of exactly what goes together.

As Paola points out, ‘’personal stylists have experience in styling such a wide range of clients, and along the way, will have developed an implicit understanding of both what’s currently in fashion (and what’s not!) and what pairs perfectly together’’.

Giving you a bird’s eye, impartial view of what you need to look your best, free from emotion and preconception, a personal stylist can guide you in new directions that you wouldn’t have otherwise considered.

More Than Just Fashion Advice

A personal stylist is all about helping people look and feel their best. They invest their time and energy into helping clients gain new perspectives, insights and confidence, not only into their clothing choices, but also into their life.

Some say that finding a good stylist is a lot like finding a good therapist; the help one gives can extend far beyond the agreed brief!

Paola tell us that a personal stylist’s ‘’soft skills need to be on point, with social intelligence and emotional intelligence all vital in this job.’’

Accordingly, the best personal stylists can lift your mood, imbue you with a new sense of confidence, and restore a certain strut you’d perhaps lost somewhere in your past.

7 Simple Ways To Prepare For A New Arrival In The Family

With much of the UK locked down across 2020 and early 2021, with little to do but, erm, procreate, experts have predicted a baby boom to be underway – and it may well be that you’re one of the lucky families!

As a new parent, you might feel unprepared for the new challenges life as a larger family will throw at you. Though, of course, with time you’ll naturally find your way, the following tips are here to help you inform any decisions you make to plan for your new arrival and your exciting new life! With that in mind, here are some 7 simple ways to prepare for a new arrival in the family.

A Larger Vehicle

One of the earliest investments you can seek to make ahead of your child’s birth is a new vehicle. Your current car may be unsuitable for an additional member of the family, especially if you already have children or are expecting more than one baby. A family SUV can offer ample space for a baby car seat, as well as storage for supplies and larger food shops. There are also hybrid-engine versions, which can help you cut down on fuel costs in a time of increased expenditure.

Baby Essentials

Stocking up on essential items and supplies for your new baby will save you some serious headaches later down the line, and will have you prepared for anything in the first few weeks with your new-born. After all, you’re not going to suddenly want to go out shopping when you’ve a new little one to look after.

Nappies and baby wipes are a must, while baby-safe cleaning products can make washing that little bit easier each day. You may want to buy in bulk to begin with, but subscription services with an independent retailer or your local supermarket can help keep you topped up throughout the early weeks and months.

Some of the best baby product subscription boxes include:

  • Grow With Me, at £29.99 a month
  • Baboo Box, which costs from £35 for a single box
  • Mum & You eco nappies and wipes subscription, for £49.52 for every 4 weeks

A Supportive Community

It’s relatively easy to physically prepare for introducing a new life into your home, but mental preparation remains incredibly difficult. Caring for a new child is an extremely daunting prospect, and it can be easy to get go through a whole range of emotions as you approach the due date.

This is why finding a supportive community is an incredibly important step. It may be a local community of young families you can meet up with, or even just an online forum with likeminded people, where you can share stories and fears and lift one another up. It’s important to not feel alone in the process, which can happen even as a couple – community is a powerful way to counter that.

Baby Safety

The approach of a new arrival is bound to bring much joy and anticipation. Yet, it also implies the need to take various safety precautions to create a secure environment for your little one. Ensuring they are safe at all times requires mindful planning and a good deal of attention to detail. Here are a few key essentials to focus on.

Baby Monitors

Striking the balance between constant vigilance and giving your little one some space to themselves is important, and this is where the decision to buy a baby monitor comes in. These devices are crucial in helping you monitor your baby’s activities whilst they are napping or playing in another room.

Baby monitors offer audio and video feedback, with some more advanced monitors featuring capabilities like room temperature monitoring, night vision, and movement detection. While weighty with features, remember that the main purpose of the device is to help you keep an eye (or ear) on the baby when you cannot be in the same room. Always make sure to buy a monitor that meets international safety standards.

Secure the Nursery

The nursery should be set up with utmost consideration of the baby’s welfare. Make sure all furniture is sturdy and carefully anchored to prevent them from tipping. Avoid placing the cots near blinds, curtains, or drapes, as the strings can be hazardous. Cover all electrical outlets to eliminate risks, and store small items out of the baby’s reach to prevent choking. Also, use safety gates at the top and bottom of all stairs.

Childproof the House

Alongside focusing on the nursery, it’s equally crucial to childproof the rest of your home. This includes fitting safety latches on all cupboards, installing window and door guards, and setting up safety barriers around fireplaces or radiators.

Safe Car Journeys

Never overlook car safety when considering your baby’s wellbeing. Newborns require a rear-facing car seat until they are at least 15 months old. Moreover, make sure the car seat is correctly installed to protect your baby efficiently.

Toys

Toys, glorious toys! The more you interact with your baby, the more you’ll be helping them learn in the future and develop into a well-rounded person later down the line. Toys and games are a great way to do this, and you can both enjoy them (hey, there’s no shame in admitting you love chewing on Sophie the Giraffe, too).

Games that involve hands are simple but effective, as you are engaging with your baby, keeping their attention, and encouraging them to physically interact with their surroundings. They’ll learn valuable lessons about touch, being tactile, dexterity and balance, even at their young age.

As the guys at whirligigtoys.co.uk tell us, the best toys for children as they grow and develop are those in the ‘things to make and do’ category, though for new arrivals, simple, soft toys are, of course, more fitting.

That said, those first few weeks and months are often something of a whirlwind, so you’ll want to get those toys in well in advance of your baby being born.

Food

Gherkins dipped in Nutella? Check. Peanut butter on eggs? Yes, please. Chilli ice cream? Mine’s a double. Sure, those pregnancy cravings can take weird and unexpected turns but after the birth of your baby, it’s vital that you diet right to keep yourself feeling sharp, sprightly and able for the little one.

Try to make healthy food choices with foods that provide sustained energy, like those high in complex carbohydrates (brown rice, whole-wheat pasta, sweet potato, squash) and protein.

Don’t rely on caffeine and sweets for a quick pick-me-up as the crash will simply be postponed rather than prevented. Ensure you have a good breakfast every morning and eat little and often throughout the day to keep energy levels up and consistent. If you’re breastfeeding, you’ll need around 500 calories more than someone who is bottle feeding.

Having meals prepped and in the freezer can be a real blessing when you don’t have much time on your hands and a baby always in yours, so deploy a little foresight and pack your freezer in the run up to your baby being born. That, or call in the favours from friends and family to help you!

Preparing Your Home

Lastly, you’ll want to ensure your home is fully ready for your new baby. You may have allocated a spare room as a new nursery, or emptied part of your bedroom to make room for a cot. Making sure decorations are complete and your new baby’s furniture is all in place will remove any stresses ahead of the due date, and allow you to focus fully on parenting when the baby arrives.
