5 IDEAL WAYS TO COPE WITH A SNORING SPOUSE

Problems in the bedroom? Reader, you are too quick to jump to assumptions. Today we’re talking about a different kind of issue between the sheets, one defined by long, restless nights of resentment. And one which can have a surprisingly all-encompassing impact on the harmony of a relationship. Yep, this one’s about the ol’ sleep snuffle; snoring. But despair not, there are simple steps which your partner and you can take to reduce both the issue itself and the emotional toll it takes on your domestic bliss. With that in mind, here are 5 IDEAL ways to cope with a snoring spouse.

KICK EMOTION OUT OF BED, NOT YOUR PARTNER

If you’re kept awake by your partner’s nocturnal noises we get it; you’re sleep-deprived, short-fused and simmering, and at times the grunting, whistling and snorting seem almost deliberate. Malicious, even.

But when you see the problem through tired, emotional eyes, your perspective gets blurred. Snoring is a health problem and should be approached as such, with sympathy and patience.

GIVE THOUGHT TO APPROPRIATE TREATMENT

Treatment for snoring is out there, but the most appropriate approach differs from person to person. First of all, try to get your partner to sleep on their side as sleeping on your back can squash your nasal airways which can cause snoring. If that doesn’t work, these remedies might;

  • Nasal sprays are useful when it comes to smoothing the airways. You can spray it on the nasal passages before going to sleep to allow for better airflow and, in turn, reduced snoring.
  • External nasal strips also work well. Available from any decent pharmacy, they don’t require prescriptions, are affordable and easy to apply.
  • ZenSleep is a great option if you are looking for an effective anti-snoring system, as it contains 5 different products all designed at both tackling snoring and mitigating the negative impact of it.

As always though, prevention is preferable to cure. Encouraging your partner to limit lifestyle choices which cause snoring is the best way to reduce it. These include smoking, excessive drinking and a lack of exercise.

IMPROVE EXTERNAL SLEEPING CONDITIONS

Another factor affecting snoring is the correct level of comfort in your bed and bedroom. It’s a vicious circle, as snoring is caused by and also causes a restless night’s sleep. Imperative, then, to get every aspect sorted.

Consider essential ergonomics with regard to your mattress. Therapeutic mattresses have adjustable settings to benefit their sleepers and for people who snore, a mattress that can provide elevation to their heads is ideal. Clinically, such a mechanism will significantly alleviate the snoring problem. Supportive pillows for head elevation are also a well worth looking into.

EARPLUGS

A last resort, we know, but sometimes you do have to look after number one. Earplugs, a visible indicator of the disruption being caused to your sleep, will work to shut out the noise of your partners snoring. What’s more, the necessity for wearing them may also prompt your spouse to look into the measures suggested above, as the seriousness of the issue will be brought home by your wearing of the earplugs.

CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR

Don’t brush off snoring as comedic or an everyday problem; it could be the noticeable manifestation of an otherwise symptomless issue.

Snoring is a possible indicator of underlying medical conditions. For instance, sleep apnea is typically detected through perennial snoring, so don’t simply push the problem to one side and hope it dissipates. Take action, now.

6 IDEAL PLACES TO VISIT IN NEW YORK STATE

If you’re touching down in the east side of the States in the near future, then it’s a given that visiting the Big Apple will be forming at least some part of your trip. Brooklyn Bridge, the Empire State Building, Central Station….no doubt all sitting proudly at the upper ends of the itinerary. But to go about things in such a stereotypical, predictable fashion, would be to miss out on what New York State itself has to offer. From abundant, spectacular nature to picturesque college towns, here are 6 IDEAL places to visit in New York State.

LONG ISLAND

Located just outside of New York City, Long Island is where the locals go for a break. And that fact, quite rightly, offers a ringing endorsement for an authentic, traditional place. While some areas, such as the Hamptons, are more known for their celebrity visitors and expensive restaurants, Long Island is dotted with small, picturesque villages and boasts wonderful beaches and breath-taking ocean views. Visit world-class wineries and restaurants, check out the view from Montauk Lighthouse or tour the halls and gardens of the magnificent Gold Coast mansions like Old Westbury Gardens.

CITY SLICKIN’

If you’re looking for some cities to visit outside the Big Apple, Buffalo, on the shores of lake Eerie, is a great place to start. From museums to parks and botanical gardens, there’s plenty to do for all ages here, without the stifling, claustrophobic nature of New York at its busiest. The Buffalo Zoo, founded in 1875, is the third-oldest zoo in the USA and home to many different animals as well as 320 plant species. There’s a chance here to explore astronomy, geology, biology, and space technology exhibits at the Buffalo Museum of Science. And if you’re still up for more activities which fall within the educational bracket, consider a Buffalo River History Tour, where you cruise the Buffalo River while learning about the history of the city.

CATSKILLS

Another classic getaway, the Catskills has long attracted artists, writers, explorers and families to its beautiful forests and high mountain peaks. And no wonder; the place serves as poetic inspiration to even those less creatively inclined.

Bike along the mountain trails in the Catskill Preserve, swim in the crystal-clear lakes or go hiking in the mountains; the choice is yours. For a more spiritual experience, visit the Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Monastery in Woodstock where visitors can tour the shrine, art collection and grounds. If you still have time to spare (do you work?!), you could even consider signing up for a meditation retreat to really get the NYC madness out of your system.

THE FINGER LAKES

According to Native American legend, the 11 glacial lakes that comprise this region in central New York are evidence of the Great Spirit leaving his handprint as a blessing on the area. As such, the region’s freshwater lakes have Native American names like Skaneateles, Keuka, Cayuga and Seneca. A favourite romantic New York getaway, the Finger Lakes region offers wineries (noticing a theme here?), skiing, boating and hiking through beautiful state parks. While known for its incredible autumn foliage, the Finger Lakes is a wonderful place to visit all year round.

ITHACA

If you’re looking for that special east-coast college-town feel, you’ll find it in Ithaca. Located in the Finger Lakes region – mentioned above – on the southern shore of Cayuga lake, it’s best known as the home of Cornell University, an Ivy League school with more than 20,000 students. Wander around the campus and visit the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, then stroll through the town and enjoy a coffee or locally brewed beer, making sure to check out the Cinemapolis non-profit independent movie theatre and browse some of its used bookshops.

So if you’re looking to bring something slightly different to your next trip, consider giving Manhatten a swerve. Do as the locals do and visit the spectacular nature reserves, national parks and college towns of New York state. While the east coast is particularly known for its autumn foliage, you’ll be sure to find something to do all year round. All you have to do is book those flights, arrange your ESTA and start planning your trip today.

6 IDEAL REASONS A VPN WILL MAKE YOUR TRAVEL EXPERIENCE SO MUCH BETTER

Though most travellers view themselves as tech-savvy and tuned in, mention VPNs to one and you might just be met with a perplexed expression. Well, first things first, a VPN is an app that you can utilise on your phone, computer or pretty much anything that connects to the internet, to secure your internet connection through another server. Sounds dry, sure, but the benefits are boundless, especially for those abroad wanting a slice of home. In short, it helps you access online content from any country in the world, safely and securely.

We know what’s coming next; travellers may protest that they’d much prefer to watch a sunrise than being cooped up in a hotel room watching something on iplayer. But sometimes, just sometimes, a few home comforts are a brilliant way to punctuate all those brushes with the unfamiliar that a great adventure brings. And as if you need any more persuading, here are 6 IDEAL reasons a VPN will make your travel experience so much better.

YOU CAN UNLOCK FILM CONTENT ACROSS THE GLOBE

We’ve all been there, trying to access a film online only to find its availability doesn’t coincide with the country we’re in. Perhaps you’ve got your eye on a movie which is out in the U.S but hasn’t reached these shores yet. What does a VPN do for you, in this situation? Well, a VPN can place you, virtually of course, in any place you wish to be, therefore allowing you to watch any films released in that country.

Netflix, for instance, has wildly varied libraries according to country – the US Netflix has almost double the content than the UK Netflix – and the only way to access them without actually going there (which would be pretty expensive, wouldn’t it?) is to harness the power of your computer, using a specially designed VPN for Netflix

5 IDEAL REASONS A VPN WILL MAKE YOUR TRAVEL EXPERIENCE SO MUCH BETTER

WATCH TV CHANNELS FROM HOME

Feeling a bit homesick? Longing for the intro music on Match of the Day or Evan Davis’ cheesy puns as he introduces Dragon’s Den? Well, even when abroad, travelling and getting immersed in another culture, there’s no shame in occasionally longing for these domestic comforts. VPNs allow you to tune in – even live, if you so wish – to T.V from back home via iplayer, itv od, channel 4 od and so on. And although the typical ‘traveller’ may turn their nose up at a night spent in catching up on your favourite British soap operas, you’d be surprised how many fellow explorers are crowded around your laptop once you’ve fired up your VPN.

UNLOCK BLOCKED CONTENT

We’ve all heard the one about the ‘Great Firewall of China’. But a surprisingly large number of countries block websites they deem inflammatory, treasonous or in some way corrupting of the status quo. Want to access the beeb in Vietnam? Think again. The Daily Mail (why would you?) in Thailand? No chance. Need to network on Linkedin while in Russia? You’ll have to find another way. That alternative is, you guessed it, via a VPN.

5 IDEAL REASONS A VPN WILL MAKE YOUR TRAVEL EXPERIENCE SO MUCH BETTER

KEEP-UP-TO-DATE WITH THE NEWS

Trying to keep up-to-date with the news when you’re travelling can seem like an impossible task. And even if you do try to keep up with current day events, there’s only so much BBC World News or CNN one watch in their hotel room. If you’re lucky enough to have a TV, that is. While it’s often easier to live in a world of blissful ignorance while you’re globetrotting, it’s important to know what’s going on in the real world.

With a VPN you’ll be able to keep abreast of current affairs by accessing those aforementioned blocked news sites like the BBC. Not only will be well informed about how world events might affect your travel plans and budget, you’ll also have intelligent, thoughtful conversation starters far removed from the usual ‘which bar is good for a cheap beer in….?’.

KEEP IN TOUCH WITH LOVED ONES

Speaking of blocked content, many social media sites like Facebook and Instagram are censored – partially or completely – around the world. And genuinely, there’s often no great need for logging on to Facebook, for instance, then when you’re on your travels. Parents need to know you’re alive, friends need to be made jealous of your adventures, incriminating photos need to be desperately untagged before colleagues see. Some of the most desirable places in the world to travel in (Cuba, Vietnam, Sri Lanka….) have blocked social media, so a VPN is a good idea for easy contact with home when travelling.

BE SECURE

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, is the security a VPN can bring to your online activity when travelling. By now any seasoned traveller should be aware that public wifi represents an open door to hackers and those unscrupulous folk wishing to steal details from your online world. By using a VPN, you can surf and make transactions securely, as your I.P address is hidden when using the internet in a shared space.

5 IDEAL GADGETS & PIECES OF TECHNOLOGY THAT EVERY HOME OFFICE NEEDS

For those reading this with their work minimised and procrastination turned up to maximum, it’s a well-accepted truth that working from home can be both a blessing and a curse. The case for the former camp; you have the flexibility that most people can only dream of and an ability to be in full control of your schedule and work/life balance. On the flip side, you often have deadlines just like every other working person, but these are hindered by the many more distractions that exist inside the domestic office space.

Luckily, there are ways and means to make working from home productive, comfortable and efficient. It just takes a little nouse, a lot of willpower and a few small investments. So with that in mind, here are 5 IDEAL gadgets that every home office needs.

A STANDING DESK

Most people don’t realise that sitting at a desk all day can negatively affect your weight and health. But a sedentary lifestyle doesn’t necessarily need a personal trainer and hours in the gym to be abated.

On average offices workers put on a whopping 8lbs in their first year of work, and also sit for around 16+ hours a day, including commuting and watching television at home. That’s basically the entire day except the time spent catching those Zzs.

Standing desks like Varidesk, it seems, could be the answer, helping to burn off calories and keep those limbs nimble. Getting your blood flowing and increasing your metabolism can only be a good thing, and when combined with a light exercise regime, can give a big lift to your physical health.

THE CLOUD

By now even the least tech-savvy of us will know that ‘the cloud’ doesn’t only refer to those big fluffy items in the sky that seem so intent on dropping rain. Yep, data storage is a vital component of a productive home office, and by using the cloud, you eliminate the costs of hardware, maintenance, and upgrades. And digital nomads, rejoice; you can also have access to your files from anywhere in the world which is great if you travel or change workstations frequently.

A HOT WATER TAP

Procrastination is the antithesis of productivity and those of us who work from home will be all too familiar with the temptations that exist around the house, seemingly willing us to do anything but meet our next deadline.

In and amongst all those delaying tactics, one stands head and shoulders above all others; making a cup of something hot and refreshing. According to research, British workers rack up over 100 hours per year making tea, coffee and other drinks. A separate piece of research suggests we lose up to half an hour each day making hot drinks. A hot water tap greatly reduces the amount of time we spend standing around, waiting for the kettle to boil. If productivity is the aim, it’s a no brainer.

A RELIABLE PRINTER

A trustworthy, sturdy printer is another must have in the home office, saving the hassle (and incremental financial burden) of having to go and print fax or make copies of documents outside. Though in the past, home printers tended to take up an unnecessarily large amount of floor or desk based real estate, these days they come in a much more manageable size.

You can usually find deals on office printers if you check online and in local stores, so there’s likely no need to splash out full whack on a brand spanking new one. When buying a printer, be sure to check that it’s Bluetooth compatible so that you can print from different devices with ease; super handy for those home offices without a fully fledged tech support team behind them.

SOFTWARE AND APPS

If you are the office manager, tea maker, I.T buff, cleaner and P.A of your home office operation, then you may find you’re trying to carry out a million and one tasks in one day. This is where targeted, specific software really comes into its own, as you can use it to help you carry out tasks that are repetitive and don’t require much brain work. Mail Chimp, for instance, is of great help if you have email campaigns to organise on the regular. Apps like Trello can also help you streamline if you happen to be working with a small team. And we can’t recommend Grammarly enough as a time-saving device; not only will make you a better writer in the long run, but it’s also like having a second pair of eyes on your work.

5 IDEAL WAYS TO START A CAREER IN FASHION RETAIL

So, you’ve got a love for all things fashion, coupled with an ambition to turn that passion into a career. Then becoming a fashion retailer is probably your dream job. And the good news is that fulfilling this dream is a lot easier than you might think. That being said, it’s still important to bear in mind a few key considerations and questions before you get going, and we’re here to pose those questions, with this; our 5 IDEAL ways to start a career in fashion retail.

THE RIGHT PRODUCTS, THE RIGHT WAY

To begin with, you need to make sure that the products you are selling are good quality and have a unique, longed for place in the market. When starting an online fashion shop, a good tip is to begin by selling one versatile item in a variety of styles that will catch customer’s interest and give you the option to expand in the future. Although it may sound counterintuitive, starting small and manageable is a wise move in the fashion retail sector. Leggings manufacturers, for instance, are an astute example of a great pilot product to begin your business with.

BUT WHERE DO I GET MY HANDS ON THESE PRODUCTS?

One of the most efficient, effective ways to run an online fashion shop is to use a method called dropshipping. This is when you, as the merchant, don’t handle the products yourself, but instead are the middle-man (or woman) handling orders between your customers and the wholesaler. This is a great way to make money as it means all you need to get started is a laptop and self-motivation. And since you’re here, it’s safe to assume you possess both of those.

ARE YOU SELLING AN ITEM OR AN IDEA?

Alongside having versatile, quality items on offer in your online store, you also need to pay attention to the importance of branding in the fashion industry. As much as you are selling a product, you also need to be selling an idea – a vision – in order to stand out from the crowd.

WHAT’S YOUR UNIQUE SELLING POINT?

Ask what your brand helps people to do. Does it make feel more confident, express themselves, be sporty or look professional? If it’s all four, there’s a danger you’re spreading yourself too thinly, so get focused.

It’s equally important to consider what ethos and stance your brand supports. Are you all about public body confidence or comfort in a domestic setting? Would lounge or formalwear more astutely describe your items?

REACH THE PEOPLE THAT MATTER

Perhaps most importantly is how you can engage your target audience. Of course, part of this will be in how you brand your shop – whether in its physical form, online or both – but there are other things to consider, too.

Don’t always assume the people you want on your website will come to you organically. That would be complacent. Instead, opt for a more targeted marketing approach. Placing adverts on social media websites, for instance, that hone in on the age range and demographics of your desired audience is a great way of bringing your products into their lives.

5 ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITIES FOR YOUR IDEAL WINTER HOLIDAY

The winter holiday is a string of ticks on the latter part of the calendar so often resented. The holiday season, surely, is something domestic. Why can’t I stay at home, be fed mince pies by my mother and regress into childhood, we hear you cry. But no, not all winter breaks need be about skiing, snowboarding and sledding down snowy slopes. Indeed, there’s a whole world of other winter activities out there offering the perfect alternative to the automated, annual ski trip.

From mushing through magical, Christmas card scenery on a husky-drawn sleigh, to building your own igloo and sleeping in it, if you’re bored of the same old freezing season routine, here are 5 alternative activities for your IDEAL winter holiday.

HUSKY SLEDDING

If you love dogs, the great outdoors, and a sense of the new, then husky sledding is the ideal winter activity for you. Whooshing through the snowy terrain to the paw-pounding rhythm of the dogs is a unique and unforgettable adventure and an exhilarating experience you can only do in wintery wilderness. Moreover, it’s a low-impact way to enjoy the snowy outdoors and enjoy an adrenaline rush, saving you from getting sweaty underneath your thermal layers. Most prevalently, it leaves no carbon footprint – only those of the huskies – magic.

Most companies that host this activity offer a broad spectrum of choice; anything from an hour, a half day or even a full day with a stop off for a spot of lunch. Should you wish, you can even go on a longer excursion; a great opportunity to get up and personal with the dogs – helping to prepare them, feed them, pet them and clean up their poo (part of the ride, we’re afraid). It will be the closest you ever come to living in a wolf pack. Fantastic!

5 ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITIES FOR YOUR IDEAL WINTER HOLIDAY

FAT BIKING

Booked a winter holiday in advance and just found out there’s not going to be enough snowfall for skiing? Still craving that adrenaline rush and want to channel some of that energy? Instead of letting your temper snowball out of control, why not go fat biking on your holiday instead. In places where snow covers the ground for several months a year, fat biking has become as popular as cross country skiing and what’s more, you don’t have to rely on snowfall to enjoy it. Indeed, fat bikes are weatherproof, meaning they can be used whatever the wintry weather decides to do. Of course, when the white stuff is plentiful, it’s best; the super thick tyres allow you to ride across the snowy traverse with ease. One could say it’s as easy as riding a bike.

SNOWSHOEING

No we don’t mean filling your shoes with snow and having a competition to see who can handle the numbing cold the longest – that is something we actually advise against doing lest you lose a toe or two to frostbite. Snowshoeing is simply walking over snow in snowshoes, and is one of the oldest forms of transportation. It works by distributing your weight over a larger area so your foot doesn’t sink into the snow; allowing for smooth, easy transition in otherwise uncompromising conditions.

One of the best things about snowshoeing is that it can be done completely independently – no need for an instructor. Simply strap on some snowshoes and follow that trail or hike that mountain. Moreover, snowshoeing allows you to explore snowy terrain you’d otherwise not be able to reach and trek softly through off-piste, knee-deep snow. Yes, it does look like hard work, but it’s basically hiking with a big shoe or two. Plus, they’re much easier to pack then some skies. Result!

5 ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITIES FOR YOUR IDEAL WINTER HOLIDAY

BUILD AND IGLOO (AND SLEEP IN IT)

Ever wanted to go off into the wilderness, build an igloo and sleep in it for the night, where every snore sends puffs of vapor into the frigid air and every visit to the loo in the middle of the night puts you at risk of frost bite? Haven’t we all? Sadly – or thankfully – you need a professional to help you build it, or risk being snowed in and under. Quite literally. Think you’ll get cold? Worry not, as surprisingly, snow makes good insulation. Just remember to take your thermals or Jack Frost won’t be far away.

PARAGLIDING

News just in, paragliding is not just a summer activity. Many places offer tandem flights in winter, where you can enjoy the snowy scenes from up high. On a sunny day, seeing the snow-capped peaks and landscape glistening below you as you glide above is something that needs to be seen to be believed. Of course, this is an activity which is weather dependent; as the old saying goes, if flakes are falling you can’t go flying. And since you’ll be paragliding at lofty heights in the winter air thermals are needed.

4 IDEAL WAYS TO REDUCE THE STRESS OF RUNNING A HOME

Home is where the heart is. Or maybe not, according to a recent survey by home experts Hoppy, which revealed that the stress of the day doesn’t indeed end when we leave the office. Nope, over 40% of workers dread arriving home as more stress awaits in the shape of daily chores and household tasks.

It was revealed by the Happy Home study, conducted by Hoppy and You Gov, that 75% of workers are unhappy with their current home environment, with top of the list of concerns is the ‘house being untidy’ (36%), followed by a lack of storage space (30%) and affording the bills (22%). Best then, to confront this head-on, with our list of 4 IDEAL ways to reduce the stress of running a home.

BE REALISTIC

There are only 24 hours in the day and well over half of those are spent sleeping and at work. If we dedicated our surplus time to tidying and straightening all the wonky lines, we’d have none left to have fun or spend quality time with the family. So, keep expectations realistic, accept the clutter to an extent and focus on spending quality time with those that matter instead. Set aside just an hour or two for chores and remember, nobody’s perfect.

DIVIDE AND CONQUER

As the below infographic highlights, the unequal split of household demands among couples is often cited as a key trigger for arguments within relationships. Indeed, couples have fights and bust-ups (or should that be dust-ups) over cleaning, cooking and washing up more than anything else. It’s not fair for one member of the team to take on the whole, heavy load. Not only will this be inefficient in keeping the house in order, but it will also cause simmering resentment which may boil over into something altogether more unsavoury. Instead, divide up the domestic demands between everyone in the house, and in turn, create a clean, stress-free home where everyone has a role and sense of responsibility.

LET TECH REDUCE THE LOAD

Gone are the days when robots running the house were the preserve of science fiction. Now, tech really can lighten the load at home. Not high tech, we know, but you can go some way to freeing your mind of stress by jotting down tasks on an online tool, websites or app that can alert you when a chore needs doing, granting your mind more space for the fun stuff. Indeed, automating tasks is now more possible than ever with hoovering, lawn mowing and doing the dishes all under the jurisdiction of technology if you’re willing to invest enough money.

DON’T BE ASHAMED OF HAVING DIFFERENT PRIORITIES

The assumption that ‘running a home’ is a dream to be fulfilled, along with a white picket fence and 2.4 children, is one which is fortunately on the wane. Instead, people are choosing different ways of life; dedicating themselves to charity work, helping others and the environment, and other noble pursuits more fulfilling friends praising you on your tidy home once in a while. If having a spotless domestic space is going to prevent you from doing good for this world, then don’t be ashamed of having different priorities. Simple.

4 IDEAL WAYS TO PAMPER YOUR POOCH

Whether you’re potty about your pug, in love with your labrador or just plain canine crazy, there can be no doubt that your dogs enhance every aspect of your lives. A dog isn’t just a pet, it’s your best buddy, and when you give love, you can be sure that you’ll get it back, reciprocated. Pet dogs give us so much unconditional affection that they can make us smile with just a wag of their tail, so isn’t it right and fair that we pamper them and show them exactly how much they mean to us? After all, every dog deserves to be fit, happy and just a little bit awesome. With that in mind, here are 4 IDEAL ways to pamper your pooch.

LOOK AFTER YOUR DOG’S HEALTH

Your number one concern should be looking after your dog’s health, because when they feel fit and healthy, they’ll be happy and full of vitality too. One thing to avoid is overfeeding; some pet owners can overfeed their dog assuming it’s affection, however by doing this you are encouraging long-term health conditions brought on by poor diet or obesity. To avoid issues with your dog’s health it’s best to research the best practices.

Recently, Everypaw a pet healthcare company, conducted a campaign focusing on what pet owners do to keep their pets in good condition. The Get Fido Fit campaign results highlight how important it is to keep your furry friend healthy, indicating that 19% of their respondents thought they could feed their dog bacon, which any savvy owner should know causes health issues. It’s important then, to keep well informed and aware of best practices when it comes to taking care of your pet.

GIVE YOUR DOG A PEDICURE

Pedicures. Peticures, more like. Of course, why should this relaxing treatment be restricted solely to humans? The good news is that dogs can now to enjoy a beauty therapy session and foot servicing. There is, of course, a serious side to this; grooming brings important health benefits; if your nails grow too long and untamed, they can make it uncomfortable for them to walk, or place extra pressure on the dog’s joints, so it makes sense to keep their nails trim and well clipped.

KEEP YOUR BUDDY WARM IN WINTER

Dogs have their own coats, right? Right, but that doesn’t mean they’re completely resistant to the cold. You may have noticed that winters here in the UK have become increasingly cold and unpredictable in recent years. In these circumstances, your dog could do with a little extra help, particularly if they’re old or a puppy. And when once you’d be laughed off the street for dressing your dog up, you’ll now be welcomed with open arms by hipsters and celebrities alike. Dog coats can make an ideal winter accessory for your four-legged friend, and they come in all sizes and styles, so you can have the chicest dog in your neighbourhood.

GO TO DOG-FRIENDLY PLACES

Dogs love company more than anything else, as you’ll know from observing the wagging tail that seems to get more vigorous with your pet’s more intimate moments of familiarity. As such, if you want to spoil your pooch then simply take them everywhere you go. Luckily there are a handful of eateries, cafes, pubs and other social spaces which welcome furry patrons. Places where they can happily catch crumbs under the table and lap up all the attention they get from other dog lovers. Bliss.

5 IDEAL THINGS TO CHECK IN YOUR CAR BEFORE A ROAD TRIP

Top down, Springsteen on and nothing but the open road. Here at IDEAL we’re road trip junkies. Nothing gets our juices flowing more than the thought of fun-filled adventures on the road. However, a road trip demands more preparation than just throwing your things in a car and hitting the road. After all, nobody wants to break down, stuck in the middle of nowhere with no mechanic nearby.

According to research, one of the biggest breakdown causes are flat or damaged tyres. So, to help minimise the risk of becoming stranded, TyrePlus has come up with an ebook aimed at #TyreKnowledge to help you identify any problems with your tyres before embarking on a long trip. In celebration of this handy guide we’ve come up with 5 IDEAL things to check in your car before a road trip alongside examining your tyres.

MAKE SURE YOUR CAR’S ROADWORTHY

Nothing will put a damper on your road trip like breaking down. So first things first, get your car in shape for the rigors of travel. Take your car for a spin before you set off and inspect it and if there are any problems, it will soon become apparentIf your car hasn’t been serviced in a while, then get one done well in advance. Even if all is up to date, it’s still worth going to your local garage and getting an experienced mechanic to inspect all the belts and hoses and windscreen wipers.

CHECK YOUR TYRES

As mentioned, before you set out, check your tyres. Low inflation can reduce fuel economy, costing you more in petrol (money better spent on snacks and coffee) and contribute to blow out related accidents. Likewise, running on over-inflated tyres can lead to blow-outs if the tyres get hot . In addition it can cause loss of traction, reduce tyre life, reduce grip and cause irregular wear.

MAKE SURE YOU’VE PACKED EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT

A well-stocked emergency travel/breakdown kit should be kept in the boot at all times. The kit should include a flashlight, jumper cables, extra fluid for your windscreen wipers and oil. And as tyres are one of the biggest breakdown problems, carrying a spare one is essential. In addition, if you’re confident/handy enough to change the tyre yourself without the help of your breakdown service, pack a jack and that special tool to get the wheel nuts off. It’s also a good idea to carry an empty fuel carrier as if you’re within walking distance of a petrol station, filling it up could be enough to get to your next destination, or at the very least, to the next petrol station.

CHECK YOU’VE GOT A SPARE PAIR OF KEYS

According to the AA, one of the biggest breakdown problems alongside tyre damage is key problems; either losing them or locking them in the car. So save yourself the embarrassment of calling out your breakdown cover provider and carry a spare car key in your purse at all times.

DOUBLE CHECK AND TEST YOUR LIGHTS AND HORN

Before you head out on a long journey, it is critical to assure that your lights and horns are working. You should check both headlights and taillights as well as brake lights. Parking lights, turning signals, and license plate light are a few other things to check out when you are testing the lights. And don’t forget to test the horn. Honking it a few times before you set off in celebration is also prerequisite.

Armed with the skills, knowledge and confidence to succeed, the career of your dreams could be right at your fingertips. The question being – where and how to get started? If looking to land your first finance job, you need to be strategic and mindful in your approach. Sourced from leading financial sector recruitment experts, here are 5 IDEAL tips to help you get started in finance and get that all-important first foot in the door.

EXPECT FEROCIOUS COMPETITION

First and foremost, you need to be realistic when considering the competition you’re up against. Whatever position you apply for, you’ll need to find a way to ensure you stand out from the crowd and leave a lasting impression on the employer. Long before submitting your application, think carefully about what makes you different and why you’re the best possible choice for the job. You cannot and will not get by on the back of your on-paper qualifications alone.

NETWORK LIKE CRAZY

It’s never too early to begin building your professional network. As is the case in all industries, who you know often counts for more than what you know.  Take every opportunity to meet like-minded individuals, attend industry events and get your profile up to scratch on LinkedIn. Never pass up the opportunity to meet and influence those who could have a strong influence on your career.

JOIN A FINANCE RECRUITER

It’s well worth using a specialist finance recruiter to help you secure a job in finance and you’ll find them in most places. For example, if you search Google for finance recruiters in Orange County, you’ll find a handful of recruitment companies you can join to help you succeed and land that finance job. A capable recruitment agency can simplify the process of pinpointing the perfect open positions for your skills and expertise. Not to mention, provide invaluable support and consultancy along the way

BE READY TO START AT THE BOTTOM

Don’t underestimate just how steep the learning curve in the financial industry is. Capable candidates can quickly climb the career ladder, but it’s usually a case of starting at the bottom and working your way up. If you expect to burst onto the scene as a senior analyst or executive financial consultant as your first job, you can probably forget about it. You’ll need on-the-job experience to reach the top of the ladder – what matters now is getting on the ladder in the first place.

TAKE YOUR TIME AND BE PATIENT

Last but not least, the importance of patience cannot be overstated. The only thing worse than struggling to land a job in finance is landing a job that’s completely unsuitable for your expertise and interests. Take your time, work closely with a finance recruiter and consider your options carefully. Sooner or later, your hard work and effort will pay off.

5 IDEAL WAYS TO MAKE YOUR LIVING ROOM MORE PEACEFUL

For most of us, the living room is the hub of the home and a place where we spend a great deal of time. From putting our feet up and watching the telly to curling up with a good book or having an afternoon nap, it’s a place where we come to relax. As such, a living room should embody a sense of serenity and be the ultimate household haven; an escape from the toils and turmoil of the daily grind. With this in mind here are 5 IDEAL ways to make your living room more peaceful.

REMOVE CLUTTER

Is your living room full of ‘stuff’ that doesn’t appear to have any proper home? It’s all too easy for this busy space to become cluttered and messy; a dumping ground for the bric-a-brac of everyday life. Indeed, we’ve all been guilty of leaving last weeks newspapers piled up on the sideboard or forgetting to take our half drunken cup of tea back to the kitchen.

Unfortunately clutter can play a huge role in how we feel about our homes and a messy room can leave us feeling anxious and overwhelmed, adding to the stress in our lives. Indeed, a disorganised, chaotic living room is not conducive to relaxation; make no mistake. As such, it’s important to minimise the clutter in our homes.

To create a sense of space and serenity, start by reviewing the knick-knacks and accessories that you have in your living room; remember that less is more and too many trinkets covering every surface of the living room can be overwhelming. And for all of those piles of newspapers and letters strewn all over the place, consider a magazine rack and get into the habit of recycling the paper in it every week. But be warned, if you don’t recycle, a magazine rack itself can become the ultimate clutter collector.

The ultimate way to reduce clutter is to have a place for everything and proper storage should reduce the effort needed to put things away. That said, there’s no harm in having a junk drawer to throw stuff in when you can’t be bothered to be neat and tidy –  you’re only human after all.

ADD SOME PLANTS

When it comes to turning your living room into a soothing place a little greenery can go a long way. Plants can bring a natural calmness to your space; not only purifying the air that you breathe by removing the toxins that linger in houses, but also – as research has shown – making you happy too. Indeed, studies have shown that by having houseplants in certain rooms of your home, you are able to reduce stress, increase positivity, boost your mood and even reduce the risk of fatigue or anxiety. Whilst it may not seem like your plants are having much of an impact on your health, there’s a high chance that they will be, so there’s never been a better time to find some beautiful plants to make you feel more zen.

ADD A MUSIC SYSTEM

If you’re after a simple and effective solution to create a peaceful and soothing living room environment, then consider adding a music system. Indeed, the soothing power of music is well researched and documented. Music can trigger a variety of chemical reactions in our brains that contribute to relaxation; it can reduce stress hormones and stimulate feelings of happiness. In addition, music has loads of other beneficial effects on our physiological functions including slowing the pulse and heart rate and lowering blood pressure. However, it can be quite challenging to find a good music system for your living room. Luckily, Speaker Champion has great guides and ideas on music systems that will help novices and experts alike.

LIGHT SOME CANDLES AND USE SMELLS

Simply lighting a candle or burning an essential oil is one way to create a peaceful atmosphere in your living room almost instantly. It’s been scientifically proven that candles soothe us and the mesmerising flicker of the flame is the ideal aid for relaxation. Moreover, the power of aroma should not be underestimated  – it can effect your mood almost instantly working on both an emotional and physical level. And if you’re wondering what scented candles or natural oils to burn, then we’re here to help. Essential oils in jasmine and lavender offer a wonderfully soothing scent, both of which have calming properties and making use of them is a great way to transform your living room into a peaceful place.

USE COLOUR WISELY

The right selection of the colour palette can dramatically change the feel and look of your living room. Some colours are naturally more soothing than others. You’ll find it much easier to relax in a room that is decorated in soothing light pastel shades, for example, than one adorned with dark, bold tones. There’s always something to be said for giving a room a fresh lease of life with a lick of paint too. A tin or two could be the key for helping your room to feel cleaner, fresher and more relaxing.

HAYMARKET HOTEL REVIEW: THE IDEAL HOTEL IN THE HEART OF THEATRE LAND

0

IDEA

Like a dynasty of fashionable sisters each with their own trademark style but clearly, part of the same family, all the hotels from the Firmdale family have a unique style and swagger.Owned by husband and wife team Kim and Tim Kemp, each hotel has been completely redesigned from scratch by designer Kim, giving them a stamp of individual design. The Haymarket opened in 2007, and remains one of London’s most recognizable and sought after hotels today due to its stylish and witty interiors.

LOCATION

In the heart of theatreland, the adventurous and bold interiors mirror the drama and bright lights of the hotel’s surroundings. Around every corner is something to look at and keep guests entertained. There’s an abundance of things to do in and around the hotel. The theatre district is replete with.. well.. theatres, but it also got enough cafes, bars and shopping to reduce your credit card to ashes; the Haymarket is the perfect launch pad for all these attractions. You could of course just window shop.

STYLE AND CHARACTER

Every room is like a painted canvas and has a story to tell. We definitely felt that was part of the fun of staying at the hotel, walking into each room we couldn’t help trying to work out the theme behind each décor scheme. From the library, a cornucopia of rich earthy warmth and colour, to the shooting gallery next door with 1960s white Perspex lamps, each room is full of different textures and contrasts which shouldn’t work on paper but somehow do. Classic drawings and historic books mix with contemporary artworks and furnishings to give an eclectic, unpredictable character that’s playful and sassy.

ROOMS

Guestrooms are individually furnished and avoid the “designer formula” look by thoughtful deployment custom-made pieces and much emphasis on rich texture and colour. From the shagreen coffee tables to ivory wood-toned pieces, they evoke contrast and comfort at every level. Our bedroom was home to the most enormous hotel bed we’ve ever slept in, seeming to be wider than it was lengthways. Quirky touches in our bedroom included a glass case full of ‘vegan taxidermy’ butterflies displayed on the wall. The bathroom was a cavernous marble beauty with his and hers sinks, a shower big enough for 10, if that’s your thing, and built-in TV above the bath.

FOOD & DRINK

The hotel’s colourful Brumus bar provides an excellent pre or post theatre meal in a relaxed yet outgoing setting if you just want to make the most of your temporary home. The menu offers a contemporary twist on classic dishes. A starter of Pan roasted diver scallops, quince purée, apple, and crispy pancetta was the perfect balance of sweet delicate seafood meeting sweet fruit and salty bacon. My main course of pork belly with braised endive, butternut squash and candied walnuts was a comforting hug of autumn flavours, and the creme brulee with raspberries prompted bitter spoon-fights with its perfect caramelized custard top.

FACILITIES

If you stay at the Haymarket hotel, the one thing you must do is use the underground swimming pool. Channelling a more ‘Hugh Hefner’s pool bar’ than ‘ hotel spa’ vibes, the subterranean pool is bathed in fluorescent pink lights and overlooked by a giant projection screen. Pink blow-up flamingos float on the water’s surface (baiting the influencer crowd to get in) and a bar is conveniently located in the corner of the room. So if you’ve ever wanted to have a splash in a private pool with some friends in a bouji London hotel, know this: the Haymarket has one for hire, complete with a private bar and staff. Other perks include a lovely little outdoor terrace, and Soholistic spa and gym.

WHY GO

If you’re in town for a show and want a classy, confident stay walking distance away from theatreland, or equally fancy some escapism from the capital’s cliches and conformity, then the Haymarket is the place to whisk you away.

The Ideal Guide To Getting To Grips With Your Credit Score

If you’ve never really understood what your credit score is then it’s time you found out. You need to know how the system works because this will, in turn, help you to improve your score and maintain it going forward so that you can get access to credit when you need it most.

You might think that your credit score is different to your credit rating but they’re actually one and the same. It’s a measure of how much risk a lender takes when they give you credit. Risk in this case is how easy or difficult it’ll be to get the money back from you.

The UK Has Three Main Credit Reference Agencies

The UK’s three main CRAs – Equifax, Experian and Callcredit – use scoring scales that range from 0 to 1,000. You’ll only get a score of 0 if you’ve never had credit before as, quite simply, the agencies have no information on you.

There Are Actually Two Types Of Credit Score

Namely, generic scores and customised scores.

Lenders and businesses use generic scores to assess how much of a risk it is to lend money to you. The three big CRAs can send you your generic score if you ask.

Individual lenders use their own customised credit scores for customers, based on the information they hold on those customers. Specialised lenders, like car credit companies, prefer to use customised credit reports.

Ways To Improve Your Credit Score

If you suspect – or know – that your credit rating could be better, then the good news is that you can do something about it. It helps you to know what information actually goes into creating a credit report; it includes:

  • the total debt you owe to all your creditors;
  • what types of accounts and credit agreements you have;
  • how many late or missed payments you have, and
  • how long you’ve had each account – if you’ve had the same debts for longer than intended, they’ll count against you.

These pieces of information reveal what was affecting your credit history at the time it was generated and recorded. They’ll also offer an insight into how you can help yourself. For example, if you’re habitually forgetting to pay your mobile phone bill, even though you have the money, you’re really letting yourself down. Using a direct debit is the way forward here, so you don’t end up getting a call from the provider or even having your service restricted.

Why Do Lenders Need To Know Your Score?

Credit scores have made it easier for lenders to consider applications. Before there were standardised credit scores, lenders used to have to look through each applicant’s history to make a judgement on their reliability. Not only was this very time-consuming, but it led to some lenders making decisions on gut-feeling or even personal prejudices rather than facts. Some applicants, as a result, would be denied credit when they could have serviced the debt well and others would be offered money when they were in fact unable to repay properly.

Using a standardised score means that the decisions are much more objective and fair which is better all round.

5 IDEAL TIPS FOR EATING OUT IN BANGKOK THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Thais love food, eating is the cultural pastime – for pleasure, a merit-maker, a show of gratitude, a welcome, everything. Our ‘how are you?’ is their ‘have you eaten rice yet?’. Everywhere you turn, you’ll find food. From many of Asia’s top restaurants, to fancy shopping malls to the street corners, food dominates the landscape. With this in mind, here are our top tips for eating in Bangkok

FINE DINING’S YOUNGER SISTER

Bangkok received its inaugural Michelin guide at the end of 2017 and is Asia’s best represented city on the world’s 50 best restaurant list. But on a travelling budget, many of these fine dining hotspots are out of reach. However, you can still get a taste of what these restaurants are doing at their more accessible younger sisters. Bo.Lan has Err, Le Du has Baan and Gaggan has Ga and Meatilicious.

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THAI FOOD

Bangkok is known as one of the best dining places in the world. Don’t feel that you have to eat Thai street food everyday. Imagine going to London and only eating fish and chips – you’d miss out on so many fantastic restaurant offerings. For example, in such close proximity to the country, Bangkok offers some of the best Indian food without actually going there. From one of the best in the world (Gaggan) to the brilliant but reasonable Charcoal from the Soho House group, to proper Indian street food at Tony’s in Bangkok’s Little India, Bangkok caters for everyone.

You’ll also find some absolutely superb Italian restaurants here, as well as Michelin-starred temples of gastronomy peddling modern German, traditional French and so much more. Oh, the possibilities!

CHECK OPENING TIMES

Bangkok is not a 9-5 city. There is no uniform opening time here. Always check the operating hours of a place before you make the journey there to avoid disappointment. This especially applies to Mondays which is street cleaning day, this means that lots of places are shut.

2-5PM DRINK BAN

If you like to have a drink with your food, avoid eating between 2-5 because lots of places don’t serve alcohol. Although you can drink alcohol all day, the sale of alcohol (by law) is banned between these times and then again between midnight and 11am everyday. This rule largely affects supermarkets, chain shops such as 7-11 and small eateries.

TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS

If you see a bunch of Thais eating somewhere, chances are it’s good. Don’t discriminate and let places with questionable looking hygiene put you off. Some of the best places to eat in Bangkok look the dirtiest. Accept that for the first few days you’re bound to get a bit of a funny tummy. It’s true of any country you’re not used to. Asia is full of different bugs our western bellies aren’t accustomed to you, just deal with it and get over it. The food is worth it.

5 IDEAL THINGS TO BEAR IN MIND WHEN ENJOYING DRIED FRUIT

Drying fruits is a process that has been around for a long time to help extend the life of a fruit. And while you might think that it is okay to eat dried fruit all the time – they’re still fruits after all – they may not be as healthy as you think. Yep dried fruits are high in sugar content. Now we’re not discouraging you from eating dried fruit. Indeed, munching on them comes with its benefits; it can boost your fibre and nutrient intake and supply your body with large amounts of antioxidants. Indeed, there is nothing wrong with eating dried fruit if consumed in moderation. With that said, here are 5 IDEAL things to bear in mind when eating dried fruit.

DRIED FRUITS LOOKS SMALLER THAN FRESH ONES

Yes we know we’re stating the obvious – fruits shrink in the drying process. However, one of the most significant risks when eating dried fruits is that you feel like you are not eating a lot. Indeed, since they look smaller than fresh fruits, it’s easy to think you’re eating a normal amount, when in actual fact, you could be eating an entire mango tree. As such, portion control is a must.

CHOOSE THE NO SUGAR-VERSION

Some people dry fruits outdoors to dehydrate them from natural heat. Others use devices that speed up the drying process. Regardless of the process involved, you need to look at what happens once the fruits are ready. Many manufactures add more sugar to sweeten the fruits – avoid these types of dried fruits as they are unnaturally high in sugar. Indeed some dried fruits are double, and sometimes even triple, the sugar content of fresh fruit.

THEY STILL COUNT AS SOME OF YOUR FIVE-A-DAY

Drying fruits does not remove the vitamin and fibre content in them. As long as they are organic and there was no added preservative, the only thing that is removed when drying fruits is the water content. The process does not remove the nutrients. Drying increases the vitamin and fibre content. And if you like fruits because they contain antioxidants that help cleanse the body, you will still get the same amount with dried fruits. Furthermore, you will still benefit regarding having better digestion, increased blood flow, and an immune system boost.

THEY FOOD CAN BE GOOD FOR WEIGHT LOSS

While dried fruit tends to be higher in calories than their fresh counterparts, according to Livestrong, if you control portion size, then dried fruit can supply nutrients that might actually help you lose weight. Great!

THEY LAST FOR AGES

Hands up if you’re guilty of buying fresh fruit, placing it in the fruit bowl only to find fruit flies flying around it a week later? The great thing about dried fruit is that it it lasts for a long time. Whether for personal use or for business, if you want to save some money, consider buying wholesale dried fruit which allows you to get the fruits you want at a low-cost. This way, it will be easy to have a portion of fruit everyday.
