5 IDEAL WAYS TO KEEP YOUR EYES HEALTHY THIS WINTER

Winter season is always a difficult time for healthcare – we often have to brave the elements to go to work or school, be on guard against the flu, try to avoid slipping on snow, battle dry skin and chapped lips, and remember to get our daily dose of sunlight. There are hurdles and obstacles everywhere, make no mistake. With all that in mind, it’s no wonder that we often neglect another valuable bodily organ: our eyes! So, here are 5 IDEAL ways to keep your eyes healthy this winter.

WEAR YOUR SUNGLASSES

Yes, you read that correctly. If you’ve tucked away your sunglasses for sunnier days, it’s time to get them out again. Too much sunlight is a threat to your eyes any time of year, and although you might spend a good portion of winter seeking even a singular ray of sun, over exposure any time of year can be detrimental, especially when snow is involved. Snow can reflect as much as 80% of UV radiation – which is double what you would normally be getting. In contrast, water, grass, and soil reflect no more than 10% and dry beach sand up to 15%. So, even though you might not realise it, your eyes might be in danger of being exposed to too much UV radiation in wintry conditions.

WEAR YOUR CONTACT LENSES AND MOISTURISE PROPERLY

Dryness is one of your eye’s biggest enemies during the winter season – and remembering to keep your eyes moist is one of the best things you can do to protect your eye health. Moisturising your eyes regularly if you are wearing glasses or taking good care of your contact lenses is key – especially with monthly lenses; it is important to make sure that you take time to properly clean and moisturise them to keep them from drying out.

Should you find that you forgot to stock up on an extra pair, no worries; you don’t necessarily have to go out in the cold to buy new ones, as next day delivery of contact lenses is now widely available. Buying lenses online is easy these days, and on some sites you can even order by 8pm to receive tomorrow, if emergency hits.

AVOID DIRECT HEAT

Properly keeping your eyes moist is just one part of the equation – the other is to avoid too much heat – especially direct heat – coming from heaters or a fire. It might be tempting to cozy up, wrapped in a blanket, near your radiator, but too much heat in the atmosphere can dry your eyes out and cause irritation. So, try to be prudent and layer up instead!

AVOID SCREENS FOR TOO LONG

A favourite winter pastime is staying in and watching movies. Yet staring at a screen for too long is known to harm your eyes and result in poorer vision. So, remember to take breaks every now and then and avoid looking at your PC or TV screen for too long. This is especially important for professionals and students who work long hours on a computer.

EAT GOOD FOOD

Eating healthy is always good advice but did you know that there are foods that can work wonders for your eyesight? Dark green vegetables, such as kale and spinach, contain antioxidants like lutein, which protect your retinas from damage. Orange veggies and fruit that contain beta-carotene, like carrots, squash and pumpkin, give you a vitamin A that boosts and nourishes your eyesight.

5 IDEAL TIPS FOR A DIY PEDICURE

0

After a long summer of wearing sandals, going barefoot on the grass and dancing at all those summer weddings, we’re betting your feet are well and truly summered-out. So as the weather starts to turn and before you pull out your winter boots and cosy socks, now’s the time to give your feet some TLC. With this in mind, Eden Hall, a luxury spa situated in the heart of Nottinghamshire, has shared exclusively 5 IDEAL tips for a DIY pedicure

PUSH BACK CUTICLES

It is important that before you paint your toenails, you soak your feet – the perfect excuse for a bath! This will make your cuticles softer and therefore easier to push back, achieving a neater finish.

USE A FOOT FILE

It is beneficial to get rid of all the hard, dead skin on your feet. You can do this by using a foot file. Make sure your feet are dry while doing this otherwise the action will not be as successful and could damage soft skin.

MOISTURISE

The professionals at Eden Hall swear that moisturising your feet will lead to expert results. To make sure that your feet soak up the moisturiser, it would also be beneficial to apply before bedtime and wear socks overnight to lock in the moisture.

ALWAYS USE A BASE COAT

It is important to always use a base coat before you apply the polish. This will not only give the nails an extra shine, it will stop your nails from being dyed with the varnish colour and will also make the polish last longer, achieving a salon-finished look like the professionals at Eden Hall.

USE A TOP COAT

Using a top coat will add a lovely glisten to your nails as well as securing your polish. To stop chipping, always seal the tip of your nail by dragging your clear polish to the edge, as this prevents chipping and makes your polish last longer.

5 IDEAL SKINCARE BENEFITS OF CINNAMON

5 IDEAL SKINCARE BENEFITS OF CINNAMON

Have you noticed that the smell of Christmas has suddenly started to fill the air? If like us you’ve already buckled to sentimentality and enjoyed your first mulled wine of the season, then you’ll know that warming, aromatic spices are the backbone of everyone’s favourite festive aroma. Cloves, star anise, and of course cinnamon, all play a part in this nostalgic fragrance. But what if we were to tell you that there’s more to these heady spices than meets the nose? Indeed, cinnamon, in particular, packs a punch in the health and well-being department too.

We’ve teamed up with health and lifestyle brand Gear Hungry, to explore more with this; our 5 IDEAL skincare benefits of cinnamon.

COMBATS ACNE

For those prone to a pimple outbreak, a reason to rejoice; cinnamon can aid in healing acne. The magic ingredient is anti-bacterial and works to kill the bacteria that can inflame the skin’s pores. Packed with anti-oxidants, cinnamon can also work to not only heal acne but prevent it. And as we all know, prevention is better than cure; never more pertinent than when discussing skin care.

If you want to take things a step further, then mixing cinnamon with honey will also provide the skin with inflammatory properties. This can dramatically improve the appearance of acne as well as helping to heal the skin condition.

EXTREME EXFOLIATION

Party season is soon to be upon us. The combination of late nights, increased alcohol consumption, and forgetting (or not being bothered) to follow our usual skincare routine risks leaving us with a dull looking complexion. This makes exfoliation a crucial step in our skincare process. The gritty texture of cinnamon can serve as the perfect texture for exfoliating the skin, and mixing cinnamon with the likes of honey can create a fantastic exfoliation mask that removes dead skin, stimulates blood flow and restores the skins glow. The perfect remedy for the party season, we think.

TURN BACK TIME

Santa not bringing you that tardis for Christmas? Not to worry. Cinnamon can equip us with a powerful tool to turn back time with its forceful anti-ageing properties.  Full of anti-oxidants, calcium, magnesium and iron, the ingredient stimulates blood flow and encourages cell renewal.  Encouraging blood flow also encourages a boost in collagen production, which anyone with a whisper of skincare knowledge at their disposal will know is the dream ticket to a younger, fuller looking face.

INJECT MOISTURE INTO THE SKIN

The change of weather combined with the party season can lead us to having dry and dehydrated skin. We’ve probably all noticed in the last few weeks blemishes and patches of dryness which would have been considered alien in the fresh summer months.

You’ll be pleased to hear, then, that cinnamon holds calcium; a lack of calcium can also lead the skin to become dry and dehydrated. Adopting calcium into your skincare routine can hydrate the skin and aid in it appearing supple and smooth in texture.  Cinnamon is a fast and easy way to include calcium into your skincare routine.

READ BETWEEN THE LINES

Cinnamon can work to improve the appearance of fine lines by plumping up the skin. Hydrating the skin also fades the appearance of fine lines to present a smooth texture and by regularly using cinnamon in your skincare routine, it will ensure that fine lines always appear reduced and skin is as plumped and supple as possible.

4 IDEAL TIPS FOR A VEGAN CHRISTMAS

There are now over 542,000 people in the UK following a vegan diet and each winter more than 27,000 Google searches for ‘vegan Christmas dinner’ take place. That’s a lot of nut roasts, quinoa and lack of imagination.

According to a study by our friends at Waitrose, this December will see 200,000 vegans in the UK hosting a Christmas meal, with the majority serving a completely meat and dairy free spread. It’s common practice for vegans going to another person’s home for Christmas to take their own vegan food with them, for fear of putting pressure on the host or accidentally eating meat due to the cook’s ignorance.

A further 30% of vegans who aren’t hosting Christmas said they were nervous about the vegan options that they’ll be served at their Christmas meal. No one wants just wants roasted vegetables, sans seasoning and sauce, so here are 4 IDEAL tips for a vegan Christmas.

DON’T OVER COMPLICATE IT

As with any meal, getting over fussy and trying to make something complex more often than not has bad results. Again, as with any cooking, trust the seasons to dictate what you serve. This is especially pertinent for vegans, as fruit and veg differs so vastly in quality if depending on whether it’s in or out of season. Right now, beetroot, celeriac, horseradish and apples are tasting pretty damn nice, and pair wonderfully together

It’s a good move to stick with dishes that can be shared, such as mezze boards with olives, dips and good, plant-based bread. Sharing feels inclusive and embraces everyone, rather than setting up a divide between those who are vegan and those identifying as carnivores.

SIMPLE SHOWSTOPPERS

If you want to do something a bit special as a showstopper vegan main, a vegan wellington, made with a vegan pastry and a savoury filling, will feel more celebratory than apologetic. Another vegan favourite is a cashew nut and mushroom pie with vegan puff pastry, thick mushroom gravy, herbed roast potatoes, sprouts, peas and glazed parsnips.

HERBS AND SPICE ARE KING

Adding flavour to a dish without meat and fat may seem a challenge, but fresh herbs and plenty of spice can make anything delicious. As such, deep stews and amazing curries give the most bang for their buck, and feel like a real effort has been made to make food pleasurable and not simply ethically on point.

VEGAN TWISTS

When it comes to the foods that vegans miss in the festive spread, Waitrose found that Yorkshire pudding is one of the most desired additions to a vegan Christmas dinner plate – check the recipe below. The sweet treat that vegans miss the most at Christmas is chocolate. So to help, the lovely people at Waitrose gave us this recipe for a vegan-friendly Christmas chocolate cherry tarts and Yorkshire puddings made from chickpeas.

5 IDEAL TIPS FOR A DIY MANICURE

0

Autumn is here and winter is coming. However, don’t let the weather take its toll on your nails and cuticles. Indeed, the wind and cold can inflict damage on your delicate digits and dry, cracked hands are a common cold weather complaint. Instead keep your hands in tip top condition with a DIY manicure. Luckily for us, the professionals at the elegant boutique Kings Head Hotel, located in the heart of the Cotswolds, have leaked their secrets on how to create a salon-worthy manicure that won’t chip quickly. Here’s 5 IDEAL tips for a DIY manicure by Hannah Osborne, spa manager at Kings Head Hotel.

SOAK YOUR NAILS

Soaking your nails for a couple of minutes will soften your cuticles, making it easier to push them back to achieve a neat finish when applying the polish. This will recreate the high standards achieved at salons.

USE A GLASS NAIL FILE AND THEN A STANDARD FILE

Glass files turns excess nail to dust whilst leaving the edge smooth and sealed. This would stop the nail from tearing, which would make the it weaker and more prone to split.

USE A TRIO BUFFER

Most professionals advise use a Trio Buffer, especially if you have ridges in your nails. Doing this will even out any ridges you have to achieve a smooth finish.

MAKE SURE TO SEAL THE FREE EDGE

Remember to use a clear top coat after applying the colour to seal the tip of your nail, as this will not only leave a shiny finish, but will also prevent chipping.

ALWAYS APPLY A BASE COAT

It’s always important to apply a base coat before you apply the nail polish. Doing this will create an even texture as well as preventing discoloration.

THE IDEAL GUIDE TO WINTER EVENTS IN EDINBURGH, 2018

0

Edinburgh, Scotland’s hilly, historic capital, is certainly an atmospheric place in the colder months. When snow lines Castle Rock, framing the city’s most famous icon, there’s likely no less pretty place on the planet. It’s also a city which has so much going on, enough to satisfy the hungry foody, the fact famished history buff and family seeking kid friendly fun all in one go. So if you’re seeking exciting, unique things to do on your next trip, then look no further than this; our IDEAL guide to Winter events in Edinburgh, 2018.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS (17th November – 5th January)

If you’re wondering why the Christmas market in Edinburgh was voted the best in the UK 2017, then it’s best to see it with your own eyes, right? Even the most hardened of Scrooges, scarred by Christmasses of dispute and dry turkey, can’t help but soften a little when in and amongst Scotland’s Capital’s festive stalls.

What’s more, there’s loads going on away from the stalls, too; there’s rides for the big kid lurking inside all of us, such as the Forth 1 Big Wheel and the Star Flyer. And, of course, real, actual Santa will be visiting the market when Santa’s Grotto opens from 10:30am on 17th November.

WINTER EVENTS AT EDINBURGH ZOO (16th November – 17th February)

The zoo animals might have settled down for the winter, hibernating until Spring if they know what’s good for them, but the spectacle of Edinburgh Zoo is very much here all year-round. You might be surprised to see a few new ‘animals’ staying at the zoo, with unicorns and the centaur-like Nuckelavee taking up residence. And nope, that’s not all the mulled wine making you see things.

Alongside many other myths and legends, the Giant Lanterns of China brings majesty and romance this Winter; over 450 handmade Chinese lanterns glowing a trail through the zoo, accompanied by folklore and fantasy. Plus, you can stay warm and toasty as you go through, with a marketplace on offer serving hot drinks and snacks. Perfection.

SILENT LIGHT (19th November – 1st January 2019)

Enjoy a groove? And a spectacular light show? How about something altruistic while your busting your best moves in the glow of fantastic lights? It combines 60’000 of them in historic George Street with headphones and a silent disco. Sounds bloody fantastic to us! Looks fantastic, too.

24 DOORS OF ADVENT (1st – 24th December 2018)

Sadly no stale chocolate behind these, but the 24 Doors of Advent event allows free entry in 24 unique, fascinating Edinburgh buildings, some of which aren’t usually open to the public. Check out more here.

N.Y.EDINBURGH (30th December – 1st January)

Everyone knows that Scotland’s Capital is good for a knees up, and at New Year’s the festivities are turned up all the way to 11. Indeed, Hogmanay (Scottish New Year’s celebrations) in Edinburgh has earned international repute through its boisterous knees up and emphasis on tradition. It’s a three day extravaganza, beginning on the 30th December with the Torchlight procession, running into the grand fireworks display on the night of the 31st and finally, culminating in the Loony Dook, a fancy-dress fuelled plunge into the city’s River Forth.

Scotland in Winter is cold at the best of times, even before you consider a dip in freezing cold water, so be warned, this one is not for the faint-hearted. Take in views of the evening’s fireworks from a high vantage point, which Edinburgh has plenty of, for maximum exposure to the illuminated Scottish skies.

WHERE TO STAY

For a fantastic hotel close to all the key locations of Edinburgh, check out the Cairn Hotel. It’s just a ten minute walk from the hotel to Princes Street Gardens, where the Christmas markets are held, and less than a 20 minute drive to Edinburgh Zoo. With free Wi-Fi in all rooms, you’ll be able to upload all your photos of the gorgeous Giant Lanterns and the festive Christmas markets.

WHAT TO EAT

Edinburgh has a fantastic reputation for its fine eating scene and is proud to have four Michelin starred restaurants – Number One, The Kitchin, Martin Wishart and 21212. There is also a fine array of restaurants that are not Michelin starred, but are absolutely glorious, providing some of the most luxurious and opulent dining experiences in the UK. Restaurants you must try include Leith Chop House, Ondine, Gardener’s Cottage, Printing Press, and Field. Recent reviews for the Little Chartroom have been rave; get in there while you still can!

The jewel in Edinburgh’s dining scene is though, shining more brightly than its many great establishments, is Scotland’s produce. The beef, fresh seafood and game are the envy of the world, and that’s before we get started on the amazing whiskey. December marks venison season, a meat which is at its very finest when caught from Scotland’s Highlands.

5 IDEAL TIPS FOR HOSTING A STRESS-FREE CHRISTMAS SOIREE ON A SCROOGE BUDGET

A holiday party doesn’t have to be hard work, nor does it have to cost the earth. It’s a cinch to transform seasonal leftovers into easy hors d’oeuvres. Even easier is it to add a festive signature cocktail to the drinks served and bring out last year’s Santa-inspired decorations and you have all the elements for a memorable, merry night. With the help of  self-described Lazy Hostess Babe Scott, here are 5 IDEAL tips for hosting a stress-free soiree on a Scrooge budget.

CHRISTMAS COCKTAILS

We all know that the best way to kick off a Santa-inspired shindig is with a festive cocktail. If we’re not met with one when we enter a party, we simply turn on our heels off back into the night. Serve a delicious red or green libation like a Cosmopolitan or an Apple Martini for festive colours and fantastic flavour.

Another easy option is Babe Scott’s “Bad Santa” cocktail. Simply mix a half an ounce of Midori with 2 ounces of vodka, half an ounce of fresh lime juice and garnish with a candy cane and maybe even some red sugar around the rim. This libation will put even the Grinch in a good mood. If cocktails are a bit out of your budget, then you can’t go wrong with a holiday punch packed with festive flavours. Make sure you get friends to bring extra booze and add as the night goes on; a boozy work in progress, if you will.

DRESS THE PART

Asking your guests to dress up in the Christmas spirit is a sure way to crank up the fun factor. For those suffering from fancy dress allergies (you know who you are!), simply wear red or green. Those who jump at the chance to get silly can go all out and dress up as Santa helpers or impish elves. This dress code will ensure your party is as colorful as a Christmas tree – a particularly gaudy one at that. These theme will also equate to great photos for Facebook, Insta et all, and especially  your wall of infamy later. Give a prize for the best outfit; as simple as a kiss from the host, or the promise of a framed photograph of the winners in their Christmas regalia.

FESTIVE DECORATIONS

Create a Christmassy atmosphere with splashes of red, green and sparkle all over the house. Cover your sofa in red fabric and hang last year’s Christmas decorations from the ceiling. Or, garland the walls with Christmas lights; the more, the better during this season. One cheap and chic idea is to replace your light covers with Chinese paper lanterns in red or green, or use red light bulbs for that extra atmospheric touch. Be careful to exercise caution with the amber glow though, unless you want to evoke an amorous ambience, that is.

REGIFT OLD GIFTS

Ask your friends to bring a present to regift. This way all your guests will receive something from Santa at no cost or loss of sentimental value. These often-scary present selections are great conversation starters and the exchange will give everyone a chance to share their family histories and funny stories. And, everyone likes a surprise present – even the swirls of leftover giftwrapping will add to atmosphere.

USE LEFTOVERS

Repurpose as many leftovers as you can to create easy Christmas hors d’oeuvre ideas such as turkey and cranberry crostinis, ham and cheese in puff pastry, and pumpkin dip. Create a “trailer trash mix” of any leftover snacks all mixed together in one big, lucky dip bowl. It’s nice to end on a hint of sweet, so make a red velvet cake topped with white frosting. Add red sprinkles to your tiny treats and put them in Christmas themed wrappers for a festive touch. Trust me, these cutesy cupcakes will disappear as fast as Rudolph on Ritalin. The only other things you need for a sizzling evening is a celebratory playlist and a sense of humor. If you follow these tips, you are guaranteed a great night.

5 IDEAL WAYS TO HAVE AN ETHICAL HOLIDAY IN SCOTLAND

Just last year Scotland – the land of game, whisky, castles and kilts – was rated as Rough Guides’ most beautiful country on Earth.  But its iconic square sausages, black pudding and animal fur sporrans might mean that at first glance, it may not seem like the perfect destination for vegan or eco-conscious travellers.

However, you’ll be glad to know that if you plan to soak up the Caledonian atmosphere for a few weeks, you won’t struggle to source suitable food, clothing and wellness products. So, without haste, it’s time to jump on a plane and head to the Highlands. Or walk. Bloody carbon footprint. Whichever way you choose to travel, you can lessen your green guilt with these; our 5 IDEAL ways to have an ethical holiday in Scotland.

ECO-FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATION

Finding an eco-friendly place to stay in Scotland is as easy as ah hoon, a dhà, a trì. Seeing as the Scottish countryside is so cherished and at its best, largely untouched, it makes perfect sense for the adjacent accommodation to also be low slung and low impact. That way, the lowest possible impact is made on the exquisite natural wonder of the country.

We don’t think you can improve on the carbon neutral log cabins of Eagle Brae; simply stunning and guilt-free, too. If you want to get even more amongst the great outdoors, you could also consider glamping in the grounds of Dundas castle. And if you want to keep things green but fancy being in a more urban setting, then Glasgow’s Radisson Blu Hotel takes its sustainability very seriously; winning the Gold Award for Green Tourism in 2009.

GO ON A CONSERVATION HOLIDAY

If you want to travel responsibly, then you can’t beat a conservation holiday in the Scottish highlands. Indeed, giving back never felt so great. Conservation and rewilding weeks are available through Responsible Travel. The former involves five days of tree planting, fencing, removing non-native trees and collecting seed, in the name of preserving a natural environment for animals native to the highlands to thrive. Rewilding is based on restoration. And while you’ll certainly be getting your hands dirty, both offer plenty of wildlife watching opportunities, as well as the camaraderie and reward of teamwork.

EAT OUT SUSTAINABLY

Many Scottish cafes and restaurants offer vegetarian or vegan options, but whether you’ll be served a single lettuce leaf on a plate or a delicious salt baked celeriac with burnt apple and puffed grains is often hard to predict. Sometimes the effort afforded to the veggie side of things is minimal, other times it defines the restaurant. Best then, to do some research prior to making reservations.

There are plenty of dedicated vegan restaurants which serve food so superb that they even attract carnivorous guests in search of something healthy and nutritious. One of these is veg legend Hendersons of Edinburgh; a mini ethical empire which boasts a vegan restaurant on Thistle Street in the city centre and three other outlets dotted around town. You’ll find vegetarian and vegan wine and beer here as well as edibles. Glasgow’s Ox & Finch has a stellar reputation and a thoughtful, carefully composed vegetarian menu, while Aberdeen institution Bonobo cafe is another 100% vegan,  100% delicious option. What’s more, it’s a worker’s co-operative. Double win!

SHOP AT ETHICAL  STORES

If you fancy picking up some ethical clothing while you’re enjoying Scottish hospitality, there are plenty of options to choose from.  So with some prior planning and a little insider knowledge, it’s perfectly possible to survive in Scotland without relying on products that don’t chime well with your conscience.

Bolshie Clothing in Glasgow’s Bank Street is one of the best — offering delicious organic tea, cakes and coffee as well as eco-friendly shoes and Fair Trade outerwear. ‘Bolshie’ means feisty and combative in the local lingo, but don’t be tentative, staff are actually super-friendly and Glasgow has worked hard to earn its reputation as one of the most welcoming cities in the world.

If you need to source organic and natural health products in Scotland, rather than trawling around high street stores, order online from wellbeing superstore Kijani Living. With over 1500 bath and body, hair care, makeup and superfood products on offer, there’s more than enough to keep you stocked up until you return home.

DON’T MISS OUT ON ‘HAGGIS’

Haggis is Scotland’s national dish and this spicy savoury pudding might taste great, but the traditional recipe is fundamentally unsuitable for vegetarians or vegans. However, it’s possible to order a vegetarian haggis online from food specialists Macsween — it tastes sublime, so pack a few in your luggage in order to celebrate the annual Burns Night celebrations on 25th January in authentic style anywhere in the world, while satisfying your dietary requirements.

It’s also worth remembering that meat-based haggis is banned in some countries. The vegetarian option travels better, and as such is a great souvenir or unique gift for a loved one. And won’t get you in hot water with authorities; no one wants to end up with a criminal record because of haggis smuggling, after all.

7 IDEAL WAYS TO REPURPOSE LAST YEAR’S WARDROBE FOR AW18

AW18 is well and truly underway, and before you know it, you’ll be donning your ironic Christmas jumper, accessorised in tinsel and praying for Spring. Best then, to make the most of the current season before Winter wraps you up in a thousand layers and doesn’t let go.  The arrival of AW18 doesn’t mean have to purchase a whole new wardrobe to keep up with the trends. A few, new key items will go a long way, and as we’re already well into Autumn, it’s more than acceptable to use elements of last year’s collection this season too to avoid that big spend with Christmas approaching. With that in mind, here are 7 IDEAL ways to repurpose last year’s wardrobe for AW18.

LAYER SLAYER

Perfect for staying cosy in the cooler months, layering is definitely in this season. If you’re bold enough, the best way to layer is with contrasting colour and textures. Dig out your metallic puffa jacket from last year and wear it over a fringed jumper for the correct effect of effortless yet quirky and up to date.

UNLEASH YOUR INNER ANIMAL

With the Spice Girls reforming and Liam Gallagher seemingly more popular than ever, it’s no surprise that another big trend for AW18 has flown straight in from the ‘90s and into our wardrobes; animal print. While Victoria Beckham has demonstrated her love for leopard print, other designers such as Isabel Marant is all about snake patterns. The great thing about this style being in trend is that you can mix and match animal print and still create an outfit that looks well put together. Leopard print has rarely been out of the spotlight in recent years — why not pair your printed cami dress with snakeskin boots and a matching clutch?

OVERSIZE ME

Oversized knits and sweaters look like they’ll be keeping us cosy for the rest of Autumn. What’s particularly useful about this year’s trends though, is that you can pair your grandad knit with your summer dress and still look on-trend. Miu Miu showed off an outfit that was made up of a green floral midi dress and fluffy grey knit, showing there’s no need to pack away your summer clothes just yet

AUTUMN TWINKLE

Usually, we don’t crack out the glittery garments until the long, protracted run-up to Christmas. But, this season, the hype around glitz has started in Autumn. Glitz and glamour basically defined Christmas 2017, and that made such an impact that it’s coming back for the whole season this year. Paco Rabanne have been showing off their models in oversized silver sequins, ticking all the boxes and bringing some much-loved sparkle to the runway. You should do.

COLOUR CURIOSITY

Curious to find out which colours are hot this season? Surprise surprise, it’s all about autumnal browns. From a brown men’s suits to a snuggly oversized poncho, the brown colour palette is so versatile. If you don’t want to overdo this shade, you can keep it simple with brown accessories such as hats, scarves and shoes to get in with the trend.

A WHOLE LOTTA LOVE FOR LEATHER

The stylish leather jacket has made its annual comeback on the catwalk too. Instead of the shorter bomber style though, this season it’s all about oversized leather coats that can be paired with slim-leg jeans and winter boots. Fendi, Balenciaga and Paul Smith were all rocking the look during their AW18 shows this season.

DON’T FORGET THE DUDES

You might’ve noticed that shearling was everywhere this time last year, and love it or hate it, the style has endured; it’s back again this year. Giorgio Armani mixed up the textures further with a shearling, suede and leather jacket that looks smart yet cosy for the colder months.

5 IDEAL DRIVING HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS IN EUROPE

Think of ‘road trip’ and immediately the idea of rolled down windows, wind blowing back your hair and Bruce Springsteen on the radio station comes hurtling into the forefront of your mind. And yep, that means that traditionally the USA is the destination of choice when it comes to such a holiday. But in recent years, Europe has been making a name for itself as one of the best places in the world to explore the open roads; sure it might be ABBA soundtracking the trip, and the weather might make having the windows down a health hazard, but the beautiful scenery and thrilling variety of the driving more than makes up for it.

If this sounds like the kind of thing that will get your motor running, then read on. We’ve teamed up with driving experts Motorparks Grange, who specialise in used cars, to bring you this; our 5 IDEAL driving holiday destinations in Europe.

ROUTE 1, ICELAND

Circumnavigating the whole of Iceland and leading you through some truly astounding scenery is Route One. This 800 mile long stretch of road is guaranteed to impress, as it offers so much in the way of variety and scenery, allowing you to see everything that makes Iceland so popular, yet uniquely mysterious, with tourists from all over the world.

You’ll get to experience a huge variety of scenic locations here – from snowy mountain tops to lava filled volcanoes. We recommend that you choose a sturdy vehicle to travel in for this journey such as a used Range Rover Evoque, to handle the tough terrain and gravel paths.

ROUTE 500, GERMANY

Germany’s famous Black Forest is home to one of the best driving roads in the world – Route 500. This sweeping stretch of road combines smooth elevated sections through the forest with thrilling switchback turns all the way through to Baden Baden. It should be noted that there are several different trails to choose from in the Black Forest, with some being better than others, so it’s worth doing your research before heading out.

The trail that we recommend taking on this rote is the Schwarzwald Hochstrasse. This stretch of road is consistently wide and easy to drive on – it’s also home to some fantastic views on both sides and an exciting drive through dense forests. It should be noted however, that as one of the country’s most popular roads, this route can be prone to traffic during peak hours of the day – therefore, we recommend that you start your journey early to avoid queues.

STELVIO PASS, ITALY

The Stelvio Pass in Italy has been mentioned in numerous publications as the best road in the world for driving enthusiasts and was even featured on BBC Top Gear. The road is one of the highest and most dramatic mountain routes in the European Alps, offering beautiful views and a once in a lifetime driving experience. Even the most experienced drivers will have their skills put to the test here, as the road’s 48 switchback turns can prove a little tricky. It’s recommended that you pull over occasionally to collect your thoughts, take in the sights and enjoy this lovely stretch of road to the fullest.

Drivers should take precautions during peak traffic times, however, as the popularity of this road makes it quite busy depending on the time of day. This means that in order to get the most out of your drive, you’ll want to get on to the road as early as you can.

GROSSGLOCKNER HOCHALPENSTRASSE, AUSTRIA

This winding route is known to locals as the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse and takes you down from the highest mountain in Austria. This road really lives up to its name – at 2,500 feet above sea level, you’ll have more than enough time to enjoy the view. Just watch out for that altitude sickness if you’re the one behind the wheel.

As one of the premium destinations for motorbike and sports car enthusiasts all across the world, this route can be challenging, with a number of hairpin curves to keep you on your toes (not literally of course, or you won’t be hitting the brake with any conviction). 5 IDEAL WAYS TO GET YOUR HOME READY FOR THE PERILS OF WINTER WEATHER

As the nights draw in and the mercury drops, we’re all more than likely to be spending more time indoors. But it’s a sad truth that getting as cosy and comfortable as possible in the colder months is surprisingly tough. Sometimes it all feels a little desperate; three pairs of socks, a hat indoors, curling up under your cherished childhood blanket, portable indoor heaters at full blast drying out skin and draining our electricity…..it’s a constant battle against the brrr.

It shouldn’t have to be this way. Indeed, with a few simple, proactive steps, you can make sure your house is genuinely warm and that onesie you wear every moment you’re not at work can be returned to the wardrobe. With that in mind, here are 5 IDEAL ways to get your home ready for the perils of winter weather.

INSULATE, INSULATE, INSULATE

Insulating your house needn’t mean massive investments and months of building work. Nope, you can take matters into your own mitts, DIY style. Proper insulation simply means preventing cold air from getting in through cracks and crevices, in turn preventing cherished warmer air escaping. Buy sealant strips from your local B&Q (other stores are available) and shore up any areas around doors and windows liable to be leaking air. Floor sealant can be applied around skirting boards; a common source of draughts. Pay particular attention to attic space, and see to any prone areas with fiberglass wool. By doing this, you’ll be reducing your energy bills while being good to the environment, too.

DAMP PROOF

Accumulating condensation and damp are common problems in winter months, in some cases leading to unsightly mould patches and worse, surfaces suffering rot and structural damage. Damp proofing is essential during the coldest season, then. This is one for the specialists; companies such as Sovereign Chemicals offer preventative timber treatments as well as damp proofing products. Visit their website for more information.

PROTECT YOUR PIPES

When the temperature drops, it’s easy for your pipes to freeze and break. And the last thing you want to be doing in winter is fiddling around in the cold, trying to fix something you’re not qualified to understand. To get all scientific, pipes burst due to a build-up of pressure within them caused by water molecules expanding. But we’re not worried about the cause here, more how to avoid it.  Prevention is clearly preferable to cure here, and the best way to pre-empt and protect from frozen or burst pipes is to keep your house at a consistent temperature, preferably via your thermostat. Even if you’re away on a winter holiday, it’s a good idea to have your heating on a timer, at least coming on for a couple of hours each day, to keep your pipes in good nick. Insulating your pipes is also a good move.

CLEAR OUT YOUR GUTTER

As winter winds begin to kick up, so does debris. And it seems like more often than not, it lands in our gutters. This presents a problem, as blocked gutters can lead to water build up and structural damage including those aforementioned damp problems. Look for sagging gutters as evidence of an underlying issue. The best way to tackle this before it gets serious is simple; get the latter out regularly and get your hands dirty.

MAKE IT COMFY FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Now we’ve covered some of the practical things you can do to prepare your home for the perils of winter, let’s talk about making things comfy and cosy for the whole family.

This winter, due to the current travel restrictions and social distancing measures, things are going to be a little different, and we’re all going to be spending a lot more time than usual at home. As such, creating dedicated spaces for the family to enjoy together and areas where members can enjoy some much needed me time are equally important.

Start by transforming your space, so every member of the family has a little corner of the home for themselves. Consider creating a cosy nook under the stairs for reading or studying. Breaking up a room by zoning your living space can help you create practical areas for all the family to enjoy. Consider an entertainment space for watching movies and playing games, an office space with a computer and desk, a mini library with a comfy chair for reading or a craft/play area for the kids. The possibilities are endless!

Speaking of kids, this year has been tough on them. Their school life, extra curricular activities and playtimes have all been disrupted. And with a long winter ahead of us, it’s important to create a space where they can do the things kids are meant to do. This is especially crucial if your kids are growing up and transitioning to their “big kid” room – they are bound to want their own space soon! If you are looking for inspiration to transform your kid’s current room into their next one, check out the tips at https://www.sparklesandstretchmarks.com, which we found really useful.

And let’s not forget about our gardens. Here’s 5 IDEAL ways to make the most out of your garden when the weather this cold season.

5 IDEAL TIPS FOR PICKING A WINTER COAT

Brrr, is that a winter wind we hear, knocking on the door, shaking the house to its very foundations? You want to step out, but the coat rack only seems to be holding thinly layered numbers in earthy, Autumnal hues. And what’s this, blowing in from the east? A gale of guilt about the frivolity of investing in a new jacket. But you wouldn’t want to catch a cold, now would you?

Fortunately, owing to the sturdiness of the standard winter warmer, buying one can be viewed somewhat as an investment; an item in the wardrobe which is destined to see a few Christmasses, at the very least. With that in mind, here are 5 IDEAL tips for picking a winter coat.

PRIORITISE WARMTH….

Hands-up if you’ve bought a winter coat before, simply because it looked good, but in terms of practicality, the coat fell short. Well, you wouldn’t be the first, or the last for that matter. We’ve all been tempted by a coat with a pretty collar, elegant belt or cute looking baubles and ended up feeling thoroughly, miserably cold. Unfortunately, coats with an onus on trendy often fail to protect their wearers from the biting winds of winter or a prolonged period outside, exposed to the elements. Bear in mind that if your new coat doesn’t fulfil its primary purpose, to keep you warm, then it’ll likely remain in the wardrobe for the entire winter season.

….& VERSATILITY

Remember that a winter coat is going to be celebrating a whole host of different occasions – and as such, levels of warmth and formality – with you. From bonfire night to wandering around the Christmas markets, to office dinners all the way to New Year’s Eve and the dreaded, barren couple of months afterwards, all with likely a few birthday parties thrown in for good measure, you need to choose something which will look appropriate for all happenings. It’s a good idea, then, to opt for a classic style and colour which goes with everything; navy, grey, perhaps even beige, are best.

LOOK FOR QUALITY & BE PREPARED TO SPEND MONEY

The winter coat is the piece you will wear the most this season and the one which will take the biggest battering; drinks spilt on it, snowflakes, rainfall, the lot. It’ll see you through the cold months, for years, so it’s important to invest money in a quality piece, ‘invest’ being the operative word here.

Be sure to read every label to check out the material(s) used. Steer clear of cheap acrylics masquerading as wool, and make double sure your jacket’s not made of polyester, as this material doesn’t retain heat at all well. Look for products made with down, the ideal insulator at this time of year. Throw a little wool into the mix, and you’re on to a winner this Winter.

TOO TIGHT TO TROT

An unforgivable mistake when choosing the right garment for the colder months is going for an outer layer which is too tight. It’s imperative that you make sure there’s enough room to accommodate layers underneath, or you’ll end up looking rather silly and immobile, too. Choose a winter coat which is fairly loose, with an adjustable belt so you and what you’re wearing beneath have a chance to breathe.

PICK A POCKET & HOOD

Adornments be damned. You should carefully contemplate what your coat is boasting before you accessorise the rest of your outfit. Obviously, pockets will not only keep your hands warm, but also offer a safe place to keep your gloves and beanie hat. So many festive seasons have been marked (and marred) by lost items like this, so make sure your pockets are accommodating enough. The bigger the better we say.

For many, including us, hoods are non-negotiable. For others though, they are annoying and a little uncouth looking. The answer? A coat with a detachable hood; great as an option for when it’s windy and rainy.

4 UPGRADES TO YOUR HOME’S EXTERIOR IDEAL FOR ADDING VALUE

We all know the story. With your bathroom needing retiling, boiler replacing and kitchen refitting, it seems that the exterior of the home is the area which gets the least love. At the same time, all of us understand that initial impressions count, and as the first place which comes under scrutiny, the facade needs to be faultless. Time to get your game face on then, with these; our 4 upgrades to your home’s exterior IDEAL for adding value.

RAISE THE ROOF

It seems such an integral part of the home, in appearance and structural composition, that any edits or refits of the roof seem a most daunting task indeed. But making changes, even if it’s just a repaint, or as drastic as a whole new material going up, will change the whole look of your house considerably. Generally, you probably won’t need planning permission to replace the roof, but you might want to check that out before you start. If you’re thinking about making further changes, then updating the guttering and downpipes will also have a big impact. This can be costly and time-consuming, so be prepared – this is no simple fix, but a worthwhile one if you’re looking to add value to your home.

WINDOW REINVENTION

As important as the roof, changing your windows can really alter the personality of your home. Again, it’s generally possible to fit replacement windows, change the shape and size of the opening, and add new ones without seeking planning permission. However, if your home is in a protected area or your property is a period one you’ll need to check these requirements scrupulously. Replacement windows also have to comply with building regulations, so bear all the bureaucracy in mind well before you start getting your hands dirty. To get a good idea of what’s out there and at what cost, Timber Windows Direct have a good selection that can be ordered online along with expert advice at hand for those more technical enquiries.

FACADE FLOURISHES

It’s not just bricks’n’mortar. Homes have all kinds of exterior finishes, ranging from a render, cladding, pebbledash or a series of mismatched bricks and more. Change the look of your home completely by removing what’s there or simply covering it up with a different material. After all, the facade is the first thing that gets seen.

The cheapest makeover would be to refresh the outside using masonry paint. If the brickwork that’s there is damaged, rendering it first and then repainting might be a better option. If you want a more contemporary look, then cladding is the most popular, effective way to make a dramatic difference. And it bears repeating; you need to check with your local council to ensure your changes meet regulations.

Can I really paint my house any colour, we hear you ask? Well, the renovation experts at The Times suggest permission should be sought, adding that ”Painting the exterior of the house a noticeably different colour will likely require permission. As indicated, the application might also be required to cover the new windows — confirmation should be sought from your local planning authority.”

FEELING BRAND NEW

Perhaps the best and most cost-effective way to improve the exterior of your home is to put a little extra effort into catching up on the maintenance. A basic cleanup will go a long way towards brightening up the exterior of your home and improving its kerb appeal.

Give the paths and driveway a power wash, mow the lawn and give the exterior a fresh coat of paint. Mulch the flower beds and add hanging baskets, window boxes and pots filled with colorful and attractive plants. It shouldn’t take longer than a day, two at the most, and is certainly much less of an undertaking than the reinventions mentioned earlier in the article. If you just want to spend a couple of hours doing it, then repaint the front door and add a new welcome mat, too.
