Create a feature wall

A feature wall in any room of your house will make everything pop and draw in attention to a specific section of your room, usually this has been reserved for front rooms, but creating a feature wall in rooms like the kitchen has now been made easy; you can add an acrylic splashback to a wall to draw the eye to it. THE IDEAL CAREER GUIDE: WHAT OFFICE PERSONALITY ARE YOU?

If you work in an office, then you know how dynamic the office environment can be. You spend most of your waking time in your office and even more time there than you spend with your spouse or family. You’re thrown together with a mixture of personalities that you may not particularly like. Your office can change your personality, too. You may take on some traits or personality roles you never knew you had in you.

There’s no denying the fact that the workplace is a hot-pot of different personalities since no two people are alike. If you’re working in a global office, where there are many employees of different cultures and beliefs, all the more that this fact also becomes evident.

Apart from that, every employee also has their own work ethics or professionalism value. While you may have the same goal, which is to further the objectives of your workplace, each of you may also have different ways of achieving that. So, it’s easy to see why in the workplace, there can be difficulties when it comes to personality.

HOW WORK PERSONALITIES CHANGE OFFICE DYNAMICS

It is important to the overall office dynamic that you and your peers get one. Ensuring that you work well with your peers is important for teamwork. Most offices cannot survive unless there is a good amount of teamwork. Despite the fact that you all have your respective differences, this doesn’t mean that your work dynamics also have to suffer.

As professionals, it’s very important to learn when to put aside whatever differences in beliefs, culture, and work ethics it is that you have. For instance, the introvert has to learn to work well with the extrovert, and vice-versa. In so doing, you’re able to ensure that you become more effective employees.

If you let your different work personalities get in the way of achieving the goals and office requirements that you have, you lose your professionalism, productivity suffers, and the office camaraderie is also disrupted.

EFFECT OF POSITIVE SOCIALIZATION IN THE WORKPLACE

Socialization is very important even in the workplace; no man is an island. If your office personality may influence how well you socialize with your peers. If you are the leader of your office, you may come across as approachable however keep your distance from staff. The leader of the team is a senior member of staff who is always willing to help out the newbies should they ever need a helping hand.

If you are the egoist you may have a lot in common with David Brent. The infamous boss in the office. This may hold you back from achieving personal relationships, as you tend to be fairly full of yourself. With this kind of personality, it may be easy to fall into the trap of office politics. Be sure not to let this get in the way of your work efficiency and the relationship that you’re building with your peers.

If you wish to start creating important relationships you can very easily change your office personality and start becoming more integrated into office socializing. Instead of working late every night while your peers go out, why not join them.

Cezanne human resources management software brings this infographic to you, it’s a quiz designed to help you understand what role you play in your office.  However, it is just a quiz and cannot tell you what role you exactly play. Don’t forget that the office is always changing and open to allowing others to change.

THE FINAL WORD

With this simple infographic or personality chart, you now know what kind of office personality it is that you have. But, this doesn’t mean that it’s totally representative of yourself. If there’s an area that you’d like to improve in or change, it’s doable – in fact, it’s highly recommended.

Try taking that chart test also with your peers. When you discover more about each other, you also know when to adjust and to be more understanding of the differences that each of you may have.

IDEAL WAYS TO MAKE CHANGES TO YOUR HOME THAT WILL STAND THE TEST OF TIME

When making a change to our home, whether it is a minor alteration or a major renovation, we do it in the hope of it lasting as long as possible. No-one wants to revisit a cracked and peeling coat of paint after a matter of months. Equally aggravating is a both outmoded and outdated carpet. With the help of this guide however, you should be able to dodge such errors and make changes that are built to stand the test of time.

Trends change over time

If you want to maximise how far your money will go, as well as the lifespan of your interior décor changes, there are two vitally important things to remember. The first is to remember that what is in vogue at that present moment will not remain in vogue forever. Anyone who has had the misfortune of encountering a 70s décor in this day and age, will whole-heartedly agree that statement. Don’t become the fossils that have stuck religiously to the garish décor of a bygone era.

Taste is subjective, and subject to change

A very similar comparison can be made with the concept of personal taste. Art has always been subjective, and will remain to be so, and interior décor is no different – ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.’ For that reason, it is important to remember that everyone does not necessarily share your, no doubt, excellent taste. And even if you remain resolute in your decision to decorate according to your own tastes, it is certainly worth keeping in mind that tastes change too.

The importance of surfaces

Regardless of subjective tastes and trends, there is an undoubtedly objective science to picking the right surfaces in your home, especially when it comes to longevity. One of the most short-lived aspects of any home, are the carpets, with an average lifespan of 8-10 years. So easily sullied and quick to lose vibrancy of colour are carpets that you are far better off instead opting for laminate flooring. With an average lifespan of 25 years plus, laminate flooring has its anti-scratch and stain qualities to thank for its ability to retain its original gloss for decades. Its durability does not come at the price of its visual appeal however, with eerily accurate natural stone and exotic hardwood replications available.

The same logic is applicable to kitchen countertops. While typical countertop surfaces suffer from certain fragilities, quartz countertops are close to invulnerable. Completely non-porous and anti-microbial, it is the perfect surface for preparing food, and it is more than well-equipped to deal with spills.

Creating an exterior that can last for decades

Painting the exterior of your home can be a tricky undertaking – mountains and mountains of paint, dry and warm weather conditions, and a great deal of effort, are all prerequisites. With such a challenging undertaking, you want to be 100% certain of not only the colour, but the quality of the paint itself. That’s where weatherproof exterior coatings come in. A quality exterior coating can battle rain, wind, sleet and snow to last 25 years and beyond.

10 IDEAL REASONS TO GET CRAFTING

Over the last year, crafting has become extremely popular. It’s got health, wellbeing and financial benefits – didn’t you know?  Knitting, origami and colouring have come out as the leading crafting trends of late, but if those aren’t for you, there are many other fun and fulfilling crafts out there to satisfy all tastes and abilities.

Our friends at Hochanda, Home of Crafts, Hobbies and Arts, have put together some  ideal reasons to  get crafting now!

Crafting helps improve a range of physical skills

Hobbies such as knitting, sewing and quilting help to maintain the use of muscles within the hands, which in turn keeps hand-eye coordination and dexterity at a good level; this is particularly important to maintain as you get older.

Crafting helps to keep the brain active

Crafting always encourages you to be creative, which can help keep the brain engaged a lot more than doing something like watching television, which can leave your mind unproductive and drained.

Crafting can be good for mental health too

A repetitive action like crocheting for example, can help to encourage psychological benefits similar to those of mindfulness and meditation.

Crafting can make you feel happier

Spending time on a hobby you enjoy can help to relieve some of the tension and stress caused by the daily grind. This can create a much more positive mental attitude, and can result in a happier outlook on life.

Crafting can be a sociable pastime

Social and emotional loneliness is something many fear. With this in mind, it’s important that those who live alone and who have a tendency to feel isolated, have the opportunity to socialise. Crafting groups can be a great way of enabling people to interact with like-minded people and meet new friends.

Crafting is a way to show you care

Whether it’s for an animal lover or for Valentine’s day, using your crafting ability to make personalised gifts is a fantastic way to show someone special that you care. Not only does making your own gifts and cards mean they are unique and one of a kind, they also prove how much time has gone into thinking about the other person.

Crafting can save you money

Crafting is a great way to help you save money. The materials can be a lot cheaper to source than buying the products you are making, for example a pair of embroidered jeans could set you back £40 – £60 but compare this with buying some of our gorgeous embroidery sets (starting at £9.99) and you can upcycle a pair of old jeans at a significantly lower cost!

Crafting can even help you make money

Crafting also has the opportunity to help you make some extra pocket money. Something which may start off as a hobby could draw interest from others, especially as handmade and unique items are becoming increasingly more popular. Mastering a craft can therefore be a great opportunity for making some extra cash and you’ll be doing something you love!

Everyone is capable of crafting

A hobby like crafting is accessible for everyone. Any age, gender or personality has the potential to find something they really enjoy as there is so much choice available. At Hochanda we offer a wide range of products for all kinds of activities including jewellery making, needlecraft, woodwork and mixed media art to mention a few!

Crafting can keep you feeling young at heart

By exploring new hobbies and crafts and incorporating them into your daily lifestyle, you can keep up with all the latest trends such as DIY fashion which encourages fashion fans to create their own unique clothing through crafting activities such as embroidery.

5 IDEAL TIPS FOR STAYING IN SHAPE WHEN TRAVELLING

0

When we’re travelling, and no doubt relaxing and imbibing in good food and drink, we tend to forget about our waistlines. With this in mind we’ve asked, Adam Rogers, founder and coach at New Horizon Escapes to share his top tips on how to stay in shape whilst travelling.

Plan ahead

Chances are you know where you’re going to be staying and how long you’re going to be staying there. Try spending a few extra minutes of your travel planning to search the local area for nearby gyms, parks or local running routes. You should then be able to work out a realistic training regime for the week. When I travel, I know the chances of being able to maintain my exact routine are very slim. For that reason I plan a slightly more manageable, whole body workouts that requires less equipment and also burns a few extra Calories at the same time.

Don’t eat pastries everyday

Now don’t get me wrong, we’re all partial to a good hotel breakfast buffet, but just keep in mind your usual breakfast is probably a far cry from the 3 Danish pastries, 2 croissants, 1 bowl of granola and pancakes that you’re about to stuff down your throat. As a one off it won’t really make too much of a difference, but consume that every day for a week or two and your asking for trouble. Try to maintain as close to normal eating habits as possible, or if you really can’t resist, at least make sure you balance out the Calories later in the day.

Sharing is caring

You’re on holiday right? So when the waiter asks if you’d like to see the dessert menu, the default answer is almost always a big fat YES. Desserts are absolutely jam packed with Sugar, and therefore are a very easy way to add the Caloric equivalent of another full meal to your day. Go ahead, order that gooey chocolate lava cake, but get it with two spoons.

Pack some snacks

You know you’ve got a long journey ahead of you, and you know the snack options a long the way are going to be very limited, but time and time again we pray for a miracle that all of a sudden McDonalds, KFC and 7Eleven have changed their business models toward healthy food. Do your body a favour and pack a few snacks to take with you on the road. A couple of pieces of fruit and a bag of Almonds will at least tie you over for part of the journey, and save you from the nasty processed options.

Results you will lose, if you don’t moderate booze

There’s nothing wrong with having a few drinks on holiday, but spread over an entire day it’s easy to unknowingly consume thousands of extra Calories every single day of your holiday. If you’re going to drink, try to pick a window of time that you’re going to do it (perhaps from dinner time). That way you’re much less likely to consume as many drinks, and therefore as many Calories. In an ideal world you wouldn’t drink anymore than you would back at home, but let’s be realistic about it hey?

The best way to guarantee that you stay in shape while travelling is to keep as close to your normal regime as possible. That’s easier said than done though, and that holiday urge to over indulge can often overwhelm us, so my advice is to just try and be mindful of your food and activity levels. Laying on a sunbed for an entire day and eating twice as much food than you would usually, is a guaranteed way to have you feeling wobbly by the time you go home, but it’s also important to understand that one week of over-eating and under training is not a life sentence. You WILL get yourself back on track, so if you do let yourself go a bit, don’t beat yourself up about

4 IDEAL TIPS ON HOW TO SAVE MONEY ON AN ENGAGEMENT RING

So, the time has come and you’re ready to propose. You’ve asked your future in-law’s permission and everyone is waiting on tenterhooks for you to pop the question. The only problem is: the engagement ring. It’s a piece of jewellery that your wife-to-be will be showing off to family and friends, with reckless, relentless abandon, and that puts a lot of pressure on you. It’s not as if you can walk into a jewellery store and ask for the cheapest one – that would be mortifying. No, buying a ring on a budget is a thoughtful process. So, here are 4 IDEAL tips on how to save money on an engagement ring.

Know Your Budget

You’re the only one who knows what your budget can stretch to. So, it’s important to figure out what you can afford before you start shopping. It’s also vital to know your options. Browse through a few different online stores, visit some bricks and mortar establishments and find out if there are any sales happening within your time frame. You’ll probably already have a specific date in mind for the proposal, so you’ll need to know whether delivery of the ring can be arranged by then. You should also be aware that some rings need to be sent away if they need re-sizing.

Second-Hand

Buying a second-hand ring isn’t as bad as it sounds. In fact, it can sometimes be just as, if not more, romantic. Imagine coming across a beautiful diamond ring in a charity store and knowing that the person who owned it had a long and wonderful marriage. There are many places where you may find a second-hand ring, for instance, a car boot sale, online seller’s stores like Amazon or eBay, even Facebook has selling pages. Always remember to identify real diamonds from fake ones, unless you want a nasty surprise later down the line.

Decrease Size

You could save yourself a significant amount of money simply by decreasing the size of diamond you’re looking for. If your partner has a particular ring in mind, it won’t be difficult to find the same sort of style but with a smaller diamond. You may be worried that she’s not getting the exact ring that she showed you, but the engagement will be much more important than the ring. If you’re not sure what to go for, take a picture of the ring she likes with you to stores and ask for the assistant’s recommendations. Asking could result in you seeing something that isn’t on display yet.

Four C’s

The four C’s stand for cut, clarity, colour, and carat. If you’ve spoken to your bride-to-be about the kind of rings that she likes, the cut is the priority above all else. You can save yourself some money by lowering the colour. The colour of a diamond is usually graded, so going down a grade won’t make much difference to how the ring looks, but it could make a huge difference to how much money is left in your pocket.

Remember, an engagement ring is not a commitment to financial insecurity, but a representation of your love. So be smart, be wise, and be thrifty.

4 IDEAL COCKTAIL RECIPES TO TRY IN YOUR BAR THIS SUMMER

There’s nothing quite like sitting in the sunshine sipping a refreshing cocktail on a summer’s day. When all else fails, you can’t beat a gin and tonic or pimms and lemonade for a go-to summer tipple, but with growing demand and competition, every bar should give their menu and update with some new seasonal drinks! If you’re looking to try something new in your bar or at home, check out these four delicious cocktail recipes to try out this summer.

Watermelon Martini

Sweet, summery and smooth, this fruity twist on a martini is the perfect cocktail to try out in your bar. For this, you’ll need to blend together some watermelon slices with a dash of simple syrup, and transfer the mixture into empty ice trays to freeze for around four hours. Once the watermelon has frozen into cubes, combine with some more simple syrup, lemon juice, vodka and melon liqueur, and blend until you reach a smooth consistency.

Champagne Mojito

You don’t have to be a fancy pants to enjoy this cocktail, but it sure helps. Add a sophisticated twist to a classic cocktail with the champagne mojito. Follow the usual mojito recipe for this by mixing fresh mint leaves, thai basil, sugar and lime wedges in a small glass. Pour your rum and minty mixture into a pitcher and combine with lots of ice. For recipes that involve lots of ice, commercial ice makers come in extra handy, and are a summer must have for any bar! Add some more ice to your glasses and pour in the mixture, topping with champagne or cava and garnishing with some fresh mint for a refreshing summer treat.

Blackberry Mint Julep

Another delicious sweet and minty beverage, this blackberry mint julep will have you dreaming of summer all year long. For this recipe, you’ll need to start by making a blackberry puree by blending blackberries and water until smooth, and then passing the mixture through a fine mesh sieve to discard of seeds and pulp. In a glass, muddle mint leaves and simple syrup together, add your choice of bourbon along with the blackberry puree, stir to combine and add plenty of crushed ice. Once ready, garnish with a mint leaf and a handful of blackberries for a cocktail that almost looks too good to drink!

Tequila Sangria

Sangria is an all-time summer favourite, and with the addition of tequila, this drink is made even more special! Start by adding your choice of fruit to an empty glass – we’d suggest blackberries, lime wedges and pineapple slices for a tasty fruit infusion. After that, add your tequila, some elderflower flavoured liquor, two tablespoons of simple syrup, pineapple juice and a splash of orange juice. Finish the drink off with some ice and a dash or two of red wine, and you’ll be left with a colourful treat your guests will love.

5 IDEAL STEPS TO A STYLISH CHILDREN’S WARDROBE

Children are constantly growing and changing, and as they grow you might be finding yourself shopping for a new wardrobe more and more frequently. While it can be tempting to pick the first items you find, putting some extra consideration into your child’s wardrobe is a great way to bond with your little one, and have fun picking out cool new items! To help you out along the way, here are 5 tips on how to create a stylish wardrobe for your child.

Focus on quality

As with any wardrobe, quality is key to looking stylish and presentable. When it comes to children’s clothing and footwear, you’ll want to go for items that are made with quality, durable materials to avoid any rips or discomfort. If you’re looking for the best quality clothing, shop for some kids designer wear to help your child stay smart and super stylish.

Dress their personality

No two children are the same, so why not reflect their personality and interests in their clothing? If your child has a fun personality and an active imagination, go for bright colours and bold prints. Or if you have a little one that’s obsessed with dinosaurs, look for cute dinosaur prints and jurassic colour schemes – you get the jist!

Let them choose

Better yet, let your child choose their outfit themselves to unleash their personality even further. Giving your child freedom to dress themselves is a great way to help them grow and practice independence. Offer a few options for your child to pick out their perfect outfit – you might end up with a slightly more unconventional ensemble than usual, but that’s all part of the fun!

Keep some versatility

While bright, bold clothing is perfect for little ones, you should also try and keep a level of versatility where possible. Shop for quality key pieces like jeans, t-shirts and jumpers in versatile shades and styles. This way, you’ll still have some great outfit picks if your child decides they no longer like a certain colour, and can also easily pass the clothing onto another family member.

Remember comfort

The most important tip of all – don’t forget to look for clothing that’s comfortable and practical. Children get up to all sorts of mischief, so it’s vital to avoid any materials that could cause them discomfort. Look for items in materials such as cotton, linen and wool that are gentle and breathable on their skin, and opt for wipe-clean shoes to let you easily clean up any inevitable messes!

THE IDEAL GUIDE TO HEALTH AND SAFETY WHEN MOVING HOME

Ever picked up a box thats far too heavy and felt a horrible twinge in your back- the twinge that causes you to tense up immediately, drop whatever youre holding, and have to lay in bed for a week? Weve all been there!

Moving house can be super strenuous. Theres lots of lifting, shifting and maneuvering, and if your body isn’t used to it you could end up in trouble. To make it through moving day, here are some dos and donts that will hopefully help you avoid any slips, trips or twinges.

DON’T THINK YOU’RE SUPERWOMAN

We don’t suddenly become Olympic weightlifters when we’re moving house, so always approach heavy items or boxes with precaution. Take time to assess the weight and shape of an object before lifting and if you need another set of hands don’t be afraid to ask. As the guys at Langelift, suppliers of manual hydraulic lift tables, tell us, ”Routine heavy lifting and leaving over in a suboptimal working position can cause potential back problems.

Accordingly, if you can’t lift everything by yourself, then hire a reputable removal company, who will have all of the necessary equipment to do the heavy lifting for you!

DO CHECK THE BOX

If youre reusing cardboard boxes from a previous move, always check their status. Cardboard has a shelf life and it is better to be safe than sorry – the last thing you need during moving day is a box of books collapsing on your toes. Better yet, why not invest in some reusable protective packaging?

DON’T BLOCK PATHWAYS

If youre carrying bulky items you may not be able to see particularly well, so having a clear route through your house will save any tripping or slipping. Always keep doorways and stairways clear too.

DO INVEST IN SOME DECENT KIT

Removal teams are not only trained in house moves, but they also have specially designed removals equipment to help them along the way. If you’ve haven’t hired a removals team, things like mattress bags, sack trucks, moving blankets and general moving equipment are all available to buy online. Shop around and you’re sure to find some deals. This can also be considered for any cars that you need to be relocated. There are professional businesses like Cars Arrive Auto Relocation who offer car relocation services, so it would be worth looking around for a removal firm that offers these services if you need a car or vehicle to be relocated.

DON’T OVER DO-IT

Its very easy to keep on powering on through when moving house, but you do need to take the occasional break. Moving house can be pretty tiring on the body and the mind, and when were tired we tend to make silly mistakes. Sit down and take a 15 minute tea break every couple of hours – your body will thank you for it!

Follow these dos and donts, and youll be sure to breeze through your house move without a trip to A&E in sight!

HOTEL REVIEW: PEPPERCORN BEACH RESORT, PHU QUOC – THE IDEAL PLACE TO STAY ON THE ISLAND

It’s a fantasy that most of us have when we’re on holiday; the dream of never going back. One of uprooting everything to make a new, more peaceful life on a tranquil, tropical island. This is exactly what the owners of Peppercorn Beach Resort in Phu Quoc did. Robert and his wife, Linh, travelled to the island and completely fell in love with the untouched beauty of the place. They consummated this adoration, buying a plot of land and opening a place which does justice to its stunning surrounds. You couldn’t ask for more than that.

Location

The journey to the resort’s location involves driving over rugged dirt roads and glimpses of real island life. Peppercorn Beach Resort itself rests on a secluded beach in the northern part of the island, far away from the main cluster of hotels on Dong Hung. Up north its cleaner, calmer and more charming.

On these tranquil shores it feels like you’ve been cocooned in your own little island paradise. Cambodia lies visibly in the distance. Here you can appreciate Phu Quoc’s raw-natural beauty without the looming, multinational hotel towers of the south of the island. This is Phu Quoc as it should be.

Style and Character

Linh’s father is a passionate gardener and his work is apparent throughout the well maintained plot, the growing of fruit and peppercorn trees. This family-run feel, with the Aunt doing the cooking, permeates every corner of the place. The geniality of the owners puts punters at ease as soon as you arrive and the feeling lingers long after you leave.

Palm trees line the beach offering dappled shade and hammocks are slung between the trees and across the site seemingly at random. One is always available should you wish to snooze or star-gaze.

There are so many thoughtful touches. In the lobby you can help yourself to suntan lotion and insect repellent. There’s a library of books, magazines  and DVD’s in a multitude of languages – a document of the veritable diversity of visitor here.

Environmental Sensibilities

With more and more hotels opening on the island, there’s a clutch of eco-savvy resorts here and Peppercorn is one of them. Eco-friendly practices are applied wherever possible including using solar panels and utilizing rainwater collection. These environmental sensibilities make the resort even more endearing.

However, of course this comes with it’s downside as they sometimes experience issues with hot water. Also the remote location sometimes means electricity cut-outs. However, if the thought of no air- conditioning occasionally makes you panic, worry not, the gentle sea breeze will keep you cool.

Rooms

The resort has quite a few different room categories, some on the beach and some in the garden. All are simply decorated, airy and bright, with a private deck.  We stayed in beachfront double room, perched directly on the beach.  At night the gentle soundtrack of the lapping  sea will send you to sleep.

Food and drink

The resorts restaurant and bar are positioned poolside with the sea just yonder. Here Aunty (the owners actual aunt) cooks traditional Vietnamese food. We loved Aunty’s cooking so much, we’ve written a whole article on it here. You won’t find much need to venture out of the resort for lunch or dinner, however there are two local Vietnamese restaurants within walking distance. The staff will point them out to you when you arrive. The fact that they recommend other places to eat further shows the genteel, unselfish nature of the resort.

Facilities

Although the sea is perfect for a dip and also a float, it isn’t the best for swimming as the water is quite shallow and there are a few sharp rocks. However, if you’re a keen swimmer, there is aways the pool where you can get your laps in.

A small nail spa offers the chance to polish your digits and enjoy some room massage therapy. There’s also an old outdoor gym that looks like something out of the Flintstones – more for novelty use than a hardcore training session.

Apart from the hotel, there’s not a lot to be found nearby but this doesn’t matter as the resort is the perfect place for doing a whole lot of nothing. However if you’re feeling ambitious, you can take a Kayak to explore the coastline and row past a small fishing village.

The resort arranges numerous activities such as snorkeling and fishing trips. You can even borrow a complimentary bike and ride to the local village of Ganh Dau. Ask the staff to point you in the direction of a local eatery where fishermen will take you to some little islands, they’ll know what you mean. Also available are motorbikes for rent, and a jaunt to the nearby national park provides escape and appreciation of nature.

If you wish to visit the town centre, the resort arranges a daily complimentary shuttle service.

Why Go

Come here to stay in a beautiful resort on one of the most unspoiled parts of the island. This resort can’t be beaten for it’s atmosphere and location. It’s our favourite on the island and we hope it never changes.

7 IDEAL SECRETS TO TAKING SUCCESSFUL STILL LIFE PHOTOGRAPHS

Still life photography. It’s a contemporary art form that most photographers will experiment with at some point. Whether you’re relatively new to photography and want to master the art of still life photography, or have been doing it for years and are struggling to find success, here are a few secrets that you need to learn if you want to become a successful still life photographer:

Experiment with Available Resources

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have access to a top of the range studio or fancy equipment. All you need is your camera, some lamps to light the area, a piece of card and a surface to put your subject onto.

Once you have your area set up, it’s time to start experimenting! Try taking some photographs by a window, and some further away. Angle your lamp (if you can) in different directions, move it further away or even bring additional lamps into the area. Keep experimenting until you find your style.

Take Your Time

A cardinal rule that every photographer should follow is this: don’t rush. If you take your images too fast, whether consciously or subconsciously, the quality of them will be effected. You need to put as much time as necessary into each photo you take. Unless you’ve simply got a busy schedule, there’s no reason to rush when it comes to still life photography. If you aren’t happy with one of your images, take it again but this time, pay close attention to the details and don’t take the photo until you’re satisfied with what’s in front of you.

Light Your Subject

Lighting is extremely important for your final images to look attractive. As briefly mentioned above, there’s a lot you can do with light. Using a window as your main source of light is always ideal, but obviously you can’t control the light coming in. This is why it’s better to use lamps if you want to guarantee successful still life photographs.

Don’t Just Choose Any Subject

Some still life photographers will choose their subjects at random, which means that their photos will lack personality. If you choose something that’s personal, you can be more creative with it and connect to what you’re doing. If you care about the subject, you’ll care more about the picture you’re taking. Try to stick to just one subject at a time, rather than putting too much into the frame.

Use Different Techniques

When trying to master still life photography, “experiment” with your camera and set up. I say experiment loosely because it doesn’t mean you should start altering all the settings randomly, it means testing out different techniques to try and vary your images.

For example, you could try it with and without a tripod. When taking still life photographs, ensure you change the position of the camera so the angle/height isn’t the same on all of the pictures. You could also trying altering the exposure, using the shutter release and anything else you can think of that will give you more varied photos.

Figure out the features which you value the most and hone in a camera which provides those. Alternatively, a great all-rounder, like the Canon Eos is ideal for budding photographers who haven’t yet found their particular style or voice.

Harness The Power Of Post-Processing

In the digital age, post-processing is a vital step in still-life photography. After capturing your images, using an image converter to PNG can be particularly beneficial as this format is known for preserving detail, quality, and color depth, qualities essential for displaying the nuances of your still-life compositions. These tools can also help you make selective adjustments to your images, such as adjusting contrast, brightness, and saturation levels to create the perfect balance.

Hire A Still Life Photographer

If you’re still having difficulty in capturing good still life photos, or require high quality images (whether for personal or business use) that you don’t feel comfortable doing yourself, you can always hire get a professional still life photographer to help you out. Look at the photographer’s portfolio first and consider whether their style is what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for an example, I would recommend looking at Howlett Photography who have a stunning range of photographs to look at.

There you have it! If you keep in mind the above 6 secrets when taking still life photographs, you should have a lot more success. However, if you’re still struggling and need photos taking before a deadline, you may want to use a professional still life photographer instead.

5 IDEAL GIFT IDEAS FOR SOMEONE IN HOSPITAL

At some point we will all probably find ourselves visiting a loved one in hospital. Although when you’re the visitor you’re arguably the lucky one, taking a trip to the hospital can still be a daunting prospect, especially when it comes to getting your head around the hospital’s rules and regulations.

Even remembering what gifts you can/can’t bring is confusing as there are certain items that may not be suitable for the ward or patient. With this in mind, here’s our guide to 5 ideal gifts for someone in hospital.

Flowers

Who doesn’t love flowers. They are pretty and bright and add natural beauty to any room (especially a hospital ward). For someone who is stuck in hospital and can’t go outdoors, flowers may cheer them up no end.

Make sure you consult a professional flower shop to pick the perfect get-well flowers or flower box. It should have the right colour combination and be easy to maintain. Don’t forget to think about what message you will deliver to your loved one so that he or she can feel calm and relaxed.

However, bear in mind that flowers may be restricted in certain wards, and if your loved one or any other patients in the ward has asthma or is sensitive to pollen, flowers are not a great idea. Always check with the ward’s staff before bringing flowers into the hospital.

Food & Drink

Let’s face it, hospital food is known for being poor. If your loved one has a favourite drink or snack, then taking some to the hospital will be greatly appreciated. Again, it’s best to check with the ward first as their diet may be restricted.

Entertaining Gifts

Hospitals are very dull and boring places and for a patient, it can be difficult to pass the time, especially when visiting hours are over. Bringing books, DVDs and magazines will help keep them occupied when nobody is there to visit them. If they don’t have a TV, you may be able to request one so they can play any DVDs you bring them.

Toiletries

When you’re lying in a bed all day you can feel pretty gross. From face wipes, to dry shampoo and lip balm, little things like toiletries can can make the world of difference. However, avoid perfumes and any highly-scented products.

Comfortable Items

From fluffy socks to pyjamas to a dressing gown, any cozy items to help make a hospital stay more comfortable is a good idea.

If you can’t decide what to give them, why not give them a goodie bag with a little bit of everything? However, keep in mind that space is limited so avoid large items. Here’s some ideas:

  • Lip balm
  • Toothbrush
  • Body lotion
  • Dry shampoo
  • face wipes
  • Fluffy socks
  • Slippers
  • Dressing Gown
  • Favourite snack (if diet allows)
  • Books
  • Magazines
  • Films
  • Photos
  • Paper and pen

From knowing what gifts you can and can’t take to being aware of how much time you spend by the bedside, preparation and a little research is key to a successful hospital visit that will hopefully leave both you and the patient feeling more upbeat.

6 IDEAL TIPS TO AVOID THE MOST COMMON LAUNDRY MISHAPS

Have your favourite black jeans faded? Did you forget about the rogue red sock in your white wash? Does your favourite work shirt have a stubborn stain that just will not budge?

Look no further than this definitive guide from UK cleaning experts Dr. Beckmann for simple and effective tips on how to avoid the most common laundry blunders.

Delicate means delicate

It goes without saying that garments of a similar nature should be washed together (darks, whites, delicates etc) but another way to protect your clothes from damaging in the wash is to (where possible) remove pins or buckles, close poppers and hooks, and secure Velcro to prevent snags and abrasion – but don’t button buttons! This can stress the buttons’ stitching and stretch buttonholes. Empty pockets and turn them inside out, unfurl socks, and unroll cuffs. Tie sashes and strings to prevent tangling and be extra careful by placing delicate items like lingerie and fine knitwear in zippered mesh bags.

Fade to grey

If you’re fed up of watching your favourite black/dark garments fading and gradually losing their crispness after each wash, then wash them inside out to reduce abrasion, dulling, and limit the fabrics’ exposure to any harsh detergents. If your whites are starting to turn grey or yellow then perhaps your temperature is too low (whites do better in hot water) or you’re not using enough detergent. Dr. Beckmann’s Glowhite Ultra fabric whitening sachets are the perfect remedy to yellowing or greying whites. They not only restore discoloured whites to their former glory but also help prevent whites for losing their gleam, keeping them whiter for longer.

Too much of a good thing

When clothes start to lose their lustre there’s always a temptation to use more detergent, thinking that this will be a more efficient method of stain removal. But there is such a thing as too much of a good thing! By using too much detergent, stains can be lifted and carried in the suds and get redeposited to other garments in the wash. Always follow the guidelines on detergent packaging, taking the number of garments and the types of stains in your wash into consideration.

Don’t let it linger

The best time to get your laundry out of the machine? Straight away! Of course, it’s easy to get distracted by flicking through a magazine, being on the phone to mum, or updating your Instagram story but the longer your laundry sits in the machine after a wash, the more wrinkled and musty it’ll get. Make sure you’re keeping an eye on the time and remove your load to dry as soon as the cycle is over.

Where do lost socks go?

We’ve all fallen victim to putting pairs of socks into the wash only to get lonely odd sock in return. A great trick to combat this? Put socks in a pillowcase or mesh bag so they don’t get separated! That way all your socks are washed together securely and none will get lost in the “land of odd socks” again.

Pre-treatment is paramount

To keep a stain from setting, pre-treat it as quickly as possible. Rinse or soak the garment in cold water and apply a stain remover, working the product from the outline of the stain into the centre to stop it from spreading, then wash the garment as normal. Dr. Beckmann Pre-Wash Stain Devils is the perfect solution to removing new or dried-in stains – it doesn’t contain bleach and is suitable for all washable whites and colours, even at low temperatures in short cycles. Stain Devils removes a variety of everyday stains including chocolate, grease, ketchup, baby food, make-up and oil, and now features an added soft brush applicator for greater stain removal results in 10-15 minutes.

THE IDEAL GUIDE TO EDUCATION: FULL VS. PART TIME – WHICH WORKS FOR YOU?

0

Deciding whether to pursue further education in a full or part time capacity is a big decision and the ultimate choice can be made for a whole variety of reasons.

Depending on the circumstances of the individual involved, both avenues can be beneficial and saying that one way is better than the other is impossible without considering everything.

Of course, some disciplines work better in a full time setting but when it comes to fashion and design courses it is really down to what best fits the individual as to how they should go about choosing the length of their studies.

Full time courses

The obvious main advantage for choosing to study full time is that the qualification can be achieved in a shorter time. There is also the feeling that with such an intensive workload in a relatively small period, students will be taking more in and surrounding themselves in their subject. Whether it is textiles, graphic design or fine art, being immersed in the subject means that an individual is less likely to be distracted by outside interests.

However, opting for a full time course can have its downsides as well. Due to the everyday nature of the course, any students wanting to work and earn money at the same time may find it very hard to combine the two. Some visas and grants only apply to full time courses but having the opportunity to study in a longer period could really benefit some people who have different lifestyles to the stereotypical 18-year-old undergraduate.

Part time options

For anyone who either needs to work, or just wants to spread out the course of their study, choosing a part time course in any of the fashion or design disciplines can seem a happy halfway house. A greater percentage of part time students are older, and the main reason is that they have more things going on in their lives and perhaps cannot devote all their time to a full time course. And it is not as if potential employers look down on students who have completed their studies on a part time basis. In fact, it can sometimes be seen as the sign of a more rounded individual who has more life skills to go along with their qualification.

However, there are inevitably also downsides to choosing part time education over full time studies. Apart from taking longer for an individual to graduate there is the complex nature of juggling responsibilities. Not being able to concentrate on one thing might not be for everyone. Time management is not everyone’s strong suit after all.

The best of both worlds

To have the best chance of working out the correct option, potential students should consider institutions such as Bolton University who offer a wide variety of courses on a full and part time basis. Many of the subjects—including a degree in Graphic Design and Photography, or Textiles and Surface Design—are available in both formats. Having the ability to cater a course to an individual’s personal needs gives much more choice and freedom to anyone wanting to pursue these kinds of studies. Being able to gain valuable work experience in the fashion industry too could be the pathway to future employment.

What works best

When it comes down to it, an individual will decide what is best for them depending on their own unique circumstances. Whether it is full or part time education, being able to pursue their dreams is the most important part and in the end the result will still be the same whichever way is chosen.
