The London Shell Co is a family run affair led by brother and sister duo Harry and Leah Lobek, who both have a love for fish and boats. They have three restaurants in total, the cruising Prince Regent boat which we’re talking about today, the static Grand Duchess boat which is moored in Paddington, and finally a bricks and mortar restaurant on Swain Lain at the edge of Hampstead Heath, which also happens to be a fishmongers. That’s some serious pedigree right there…

When it comes to the menu, The London Shell Co. is all about quality British seafood and seasonal ingredients. Indeed, the guys here are seafood specialists, and it’s only the good stuff from the sea (not the canal, fortunately!) that you’ll get served. If dishes like line caught pollock with Norfolk asparagus swimming in a rich Grand Duchess sauce or smoked haddock risotto sounds right up your river, then you’ll be one happy boater on this voyage. The wine list is clean, concise and thoughtfully curated, too.  

The cruise departs from Paddington Basin and takes you all the way to Camden Lock, past Little Venice and iconic London landmarks like London Zoo and Regents Park. Dinner cruises operate from Wednesday to Saturday while lunches onboard operate on Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays.

Here at IDEAL we’re big fans of kaiten-zushi restaurants. Otherwise known as  ‘conveyor belt’ sushi restaurants, they offer a casual, interactive dining experience and a wide variety of sushi to choose from, all at a relatively affordable price.

If you’ve never been to one before, the concept is simple – rather than sitting at a table and ordering your sushi from a menu, you get to pick out small plates that look good to you from a conveyor belt, which carries them slowly past your perch. 

But with so much choice and thousands of years of tradition behind this Japanese staple, it can be difficult to know where to start, let alone how to navigate the ‘unspoken’ rules of actually eating the stuff. With International Sushi Day approaching on June 18th and with the help of Founder of Japanese food subscription company Sakuraco Ayumi Chikamoto, here’s how to eat like a pro at a sushi bar this International Sushi Day.  

Know Your Type  

“It can be helpful to have an idea of the different types of sushi before you visit, so you know which you might like to try first”, Chikamoto tells us. 

But with so much variety, how do you know where to start?  Well, its’ a good idea to know the most common types of sushi usually found at a kaiten-zushi, which include… 

Nigiri: Nigiri sushi is a type of sushi made of thin slices of raw fish or other seafood placed on top of pressed vinegared rice. The fish is usually served raw, but it can be cooked or marinated, depending on the type of fish and the sushi chef’s style. Some common varieties include shrimp, tuna, salmon, and eel. Occasionally, a small amount of wasabi or a thin strip of seaweed, usually nori, may be used to bind the topping to the rice.

Maki: Also known as rolled sushi, Maki is perhaps the most recognized form of sushi, especially for those new to this Japanese cuisine. Maki sushi is made by rolling sushi rice and various ingredients within a sheet of nori using a bamboo mat. The roll is then cut into bite-sized pieces. There are different types of Maki, including Hosomaki (thin roll), Chumaki (medium roll), and Futomaki (thick roll), differing in terms of size and the amount of fillings.

Uramaki: Uramaki is essentially a reverse Maki roll, also famously known as an ‘inside-out roll’. The sushi rice is on the outside of the nori, which holds the ingredients in the centre. Uramaki often has multiple fillings, which can include diverse yet complementary ingredients like cucumber, avocado, crabmeat, or tuna. The outer layer of the roll can also be coated with other ingredients like toasted sesame seeds or fish roe for an additional layer of flavour and texture. The California Roll is a popular example of Uramaki sushi.

Temaki: Often referred to as ‘hand roll’ sushi, Temaki sushi is a cone-shaped piece made from a nori sheet filled with sushi rice, seafood, and vegetables. It’s designed to be eaten with hands rather than chopsticks. The cone allows for a variety of fillings, and the format offers a good mix of textures and flavours. Because Temaki cannot be made ahead of time without losing its crispness, it’s often prepared directly by the chef and handed to the customer immediately.

Stay Fresh 

“Fresh ingredients should be your number one priority when selecting a sushi restaurant”, says Chikamoto. “Luckily, there are a few simple tricks and tips that can help you spot better dishes”, he divulges. 

Contrary to popular belief, sushi shouldn’t smell fishy. In fact, according to world-renowned sushi chef Hidekazu Tojo, a good sushi restaurant should smell like cucumber or watermelon.  

It’s been revealed that some establishments chill fish at the lowest possible temperatures if they think it is coming to the end of its shelf-life. If your sushi feels abnormally cold when it arrives, allow it to sit at room temperature for a couple of minutes. If it’s not fresh, it will begin to smell. 

It’s worth noting that freshness shouldn’t be a huge concern, as many modern kaiten-zushi restaurants now use RFID tags to monitor how long plates stay out on the conveyor belt and take away any items that are no longer fresh.

Quality Over Quantity 

While eating seemingly infinite sushi may feel impossible to resist, the enjoyment and satisfaction derived from consuming a few pieces of high-quality sushi can be much greater.

“All the plates that pass by on the conveyor belt are color-coded according to price.  Sometimes, it can be better to go for the pricier plates, this is because of the ingredients. You’ll normally find the higher the ratio of rice to filling, the less expensive the sushi will be. And then, of course, some vegetables and garnishes are inevitably more expensive than others”, explains Chikamoto.

One Bite Wonder

“Traditionally, it’s believed sushi should be enjoyed in one bite” explains Chikamoto. This is the way it is eaten in Japan. Taking a bite of a piece of sushi can break the balance of flavours and textures that the chef aimed to create. Also, it can be messy because sushi is typically not designed to be bitten in half – you might find rice spilling everywhere.

However, it’s important to consider comfort and personal preference. If the sushi piece is too large for you to comfortably eat in one bite, then it’s of course okay to eat it in two bites.

Tongue Down

There is a specific way to take that one bite – “when eating sushi, you should place it on your tongue face down, so you get the full flavor and freshness of the fish.”  

The fish used in sushi is typically high quality and has subtle flavours that can be missed if the rice hits your tongue first, with the rice interfering with the taste of the fish.

In the case of nigiri sushi (a slice of fish over pressed vinegared rice), the fish is often brushed with a bit of soy sauce or other toppings. Placing it fish-side down on the tongue ensures that you taste these seasonings directly. In addition, the temperature of the fish is often cooler than the room temperature rice, and placing it directly on your tongue can heighten the experience of the flavour.

To Chopstick Or Not To Chopstick?

That is the question. Believe it or not, it’s not a faux pas to use your fingers to eat sushi, especially sashimi. It is perfectly acceptable to eat sushi with your hands. Only sashimi is meant to be eaten with chopsticks. However, ultimately, it once again comes down to personal preference.

It should be noted, however, that you should never leave chopsticks sticking upright in your bowl, as it is considered disrespectful. When not in use, place them horizontally on a chopstick rest or the edge of your plate.

Pairing & Condiments

Traditional sushi etiquette encourages minimal use of soy sauce and wasabi. Avoid mixing wasabi into your soy sauce— if the chef thinks the sushi needs wasabi, they will put the right amount on it. Dipping your sushi in too much soy sauce can overpower the delicate flavors of the fish.

“The traditional condiments that come with sushi also serve a specific purpose. Soy sauce is for dipping, ginger is for eating between different plates to cleanse your palette, and wasabi is for adding spiciness.” Yes, pickled ginger is meant to cleanse your palate between different types of sushi. It’s not intended to be eaten with the sushi itself.

Oh, and sushi should also be dipped fish-side down. If you dip the rice into the soy sauce, it can cause the rice to fall apart. Generally speaking, dipping your sushi fish-side down allows you to get the right amount of soy sauce without over-saturating the sushi or having too much soak into the rice.

When it comes to drinks, traditional etiquette suggests not to drink sake while eating rice-based sushi (as sake is made from rice), and instead opt for a beer or tea. However, these rules are more flexible these days.

Eat In Order 

In terms of the order in which to drink sushi (if you’re not being served items one-by-one), it’s a good idea to start with lighter, more subtle flavours before moving on to heavier, fattier varieties. This allows the palate to appreciate each type without being overwhelmed.

“While there are no set rules on the order you eat your sushi in, some say that it’s best to start with light fish like snapper, and then move on to dark fish (salmon). This is because the lighter fish is less oily and won’t coat your tongue in fat, so you can enjoy the full taste of all your chosen dishes”, explains Chikamoto

In any case, Chikamoto recommends eating pickled ginger or taking a sip of tea to cleanse your palette between different plates.

As we gear up to celebrate Pride Month 2023, London comes alive with vibrant colours, joyous festivities, and a sense of unity that envelops the city. Long may it continue. With a multitude of events and venues to choose from, here’s a list of 14 of the best places to join the celebrations in London this Pride Month.

Pride Parade

The Pride Parade is the headlining act of Pride Month in London, the huge climax to a month of heavy petting. Kicking off at midday on Saturday 1st July in Hyde Park Corner and seeing upwards of 300 floats meander their way through central London – taking in Piccadilly, Haymarket and Trafalgar Square before finishing up in Whitehall – a whopping 1.5 million attendees are expected. 

We can’t wait to get amongst it!

Queer Walls at Eltham Palace

Next up, we’re heading to Eltham Palace, for a drag-inspired exploration of LGBTQ+ history and culture. June 9th sees this Greenwich manor house transformed into a 1930s art deco cocktail party, hosted by the venerable drag power couple Adam All and Apple Derrieres. Expect much madness, mayhem, frolics and frivolity!

Queer Migrant Pride

A celebration of both Refugee Week and Pride Month, Saturday 24th June sees a coming together of the two causes at Bethnal Green’s St Margaret’s House for a free-to-enter all-day festival. Check out talks, performances, workshops and screenings, all in support of a world without borders or discrimination.

Forest Gayte Pride 2023

Also on 24th June (as well as the 23rd and 25th) across town in Newham, Forest Gayte Pride is a three-day, street-level event that luxuriates in cabaret, drag, live music and DJs, all from the LGBTQ+ community. This one’s an absolute hoot, and with tickets at just £6, an absolute bargain, too.

Big Queer Disco Pride Afterparty at Clapham Grand 

For one of the Pride Parade’s biggest after parties, check out the Big Queer Disco Pride afterparty at Clapham Grand, opposite Clapham Junction, which is happening from around 9:30pm until the early hours on July 1st.

This spectacular event promises to be one of the night’s most fabulous parties, with South London’s iconic ‘Red-bricked Party Palace’ hosting a night of dancing and debauchery to its 1250 revellers, all soundtracked by DJs Raven Mandela and Lady Lloyd.

Homostash Pride Rave

Hosted at Colours Hoxton, if you’re a fan of techno and disco (hey, who isn’t?), then head over to the Homostash Pride Rave, also happening on 1st July between 9:30pm and 3:30am. Glowsticks at the ready!

Pride’s Got Talent at the Adelphi Theatre 

You best get Tuesday 27th June boxed off in your calendars, as this is the date for the always raucous, infinitely impressive Pride’s Got Talent at the Adelphi Theatre. Showcasing some of the city’s most exciting LGBTQ+ talent, from singers to dancers, firebreathers and escapologists, winners receive £1000 and earn the chance to perform in Trafalgar Square.

Queer Comedy Club

Archway’s Queer Comedy Club (the first LGBTQ+ comedy club in the UK) has only been open a month, but it has already hit its stride, just in time for Pride!

Naturally, this June the calendar here is stacked, with performances taking place most evenings. We’re big fans of American comic Spring Day, who’ll be bringing her sassy stylings to the stage here on Thursday 29th June. See you down the front?

West London Queer Project 10k Pride Walk

Put your best foot forward as Pride Month steps into gear with the West London Queer Project’s 10km walk, taking place on June 3rd. Shining a light (and raising money for) motor neurone disease, tickets cost £25, which gets you food, drink and a T-shirt, as well as access to the afterparty. 

Hosted at the Black Lion pub, you’ll catch performances by some of London’s most beloved drag queens, including Choriza May, Miss Lola Lasagne, Luna Cortez and Beary Poppins​.

Queer Britain Museum

For an important, deep dive into LGBTQ+ history in the UK and beyond, be sure to visit the newly opened Queer Britain Museum during Pride Month. This year, their inaugural exhibition ‘We Are Queer Britain’ marks the 50th anniversary of the UK’s first Pride march. A must-see, this one.

Anyway, we wouldn’t be half surprised if a show called the Great British Spring Clear Out was just around the corner, owing to the amount of ‘stuff’ we all accumulated at the start of the decade, during that cursed time we’d now rather not speak of. With many homes still moonlighting as offices, classrooms and gyms, it’s only natural for residents to want to carve out a little extra space.

Although it’s now sometimes referred to positively as ‘cluttecore’ and somewhat more accurately as ‘stuffocation’, if all those Amazon deliveries and impulse purchases have got you tripping, cursing and longing for a larger home, then from self-storage to smart shelving, check out these 5 great decluttering tips for 2023.

Take A Detailed Inventory

First things first, it’s essential to first take stock of, well, everything you own, to determine what you have surplus of, which items you have going spare, what is in a state of disrepair, and what could be saved with a little love. 

Make a list of three columns, to ‘keep’, to ‘discard’ and a ‘maybe’ section, then pledge to get rid of everything from the latter two. Decluttering is all about being hard-hearted and there’s no room for maybes here. It’s impossible to be efficient in your clearout when sentimentality takes over. You can make the most out of walls by installing shelves or building cupboard space where you can stack your stuff such as books, magazines, etc. You can build floor-to-ceiling shelves where you can put your displays, or you can install shelves by the edge of the wall and the ceiling where you can hide your stuff. 

It can sometimes be possible to make better use of cupboard space within our home rather than outsourcing your storage needs, too. The use of dividers within cupboards, for example, can mean that many smaller items can be accommodated on top of one another, without causing damage. When we think about self care and wellbeing the first thing that comes to mind might not be volunteering and helping others – but new research has revealed that by volunteering for just a few hours each month you can improve your mental health. 

The study of 2,000 adults, commissioned by community retailer SPAR, found that two thirds of those who volunteer (67%) believe that volunteering improves their well-being because giving back to others feels good.

A quarter of people looking to volunteer soon added they wanted to get involved to improve their mental health – so how can we help others and help ourselves this summer?

Get Involved With Your Community

Communities have played a vital role in our daily lives over the last few years and there is a big desire to give back to local causes. 

Nearly half (46%) said they would like to get involved in volunteering this year to help others (56%), make a difference (50%), and give back to the community (46%). 

One in ten (12%) said they were desperate to start helping in the near future and on average could dedicate six hours a month to help out. 

Over a third (37%) would like to volunteer to feel more productive with their spare time and the most popular places to help out include outdoor community spaces, food banks, soup kitchens and animal shelters. 

However, despite a passion to get involved many barriers still exist. Almost half of those surveyed (47%) cited a lack of time as a major barrier, with a quarter (24%) claiming difficulty balancing work and family commitments stops them helping out. 

The Rewards Of Giving Back

With time constraints, family commitments and even finances holding us back from volunteering it’s understandable that we might still need that push to get involved.

But by understanding how giving back can lift our mood and boost mental health, thanks to the benefits in helping others, we can carve out opportunities to do something each month.

When looking at why volunteering improves wellbeing it was clear that the act of giving back and being part of the community is key with 64% saying giving back to others feels good, 57% saying it feels good to contribute to society and 45% saying volunteering gives you a sense of belonging. Doing so can even help you bond with family members, if you decide to volunteer as a group.

Dr Nishat Babu, a psychologist at Loughborough University and expert in the positive effects of volunteering explains how this works:

“Research highlights the many benefits of volunteering, including enhanced wellbeing, greater happiness and life satisfaction, and even improved physical health in some cases. So, not only can volunteering in the local community help others, but it can also benefit the volunteer through enhanced wellbeing, as well as a greater sense of belonging which can be helpful in counteracting loneliness and improving mental health.”

“We all have a number of commitments in our life which can make it tough to find time to dedicate to volunteering, especially when working full time and managing existing family commitments. It is interesting however that by setting aside some time to volunteer, we can actually benefit our work lives. Research shows it can improve our performance at work and develop our competencies. It can also be a great way to recover from a stressful day at work, improve mood, and also help coping with work stressors.”

How To Do Your Bit

So whilst the benefits of giving back are clear, another barrier to giving time to local causes and doing your bit is the logistics with 17% of people admitting they are unsure what to do to get involved with volunteering.

The most common volunteering opportunities are in schools (24%), charity shops (21%), at local sports events (19%), and children and youth centres (18%). Increasingly, helping the elderly has become popular too, as a loneliness epidemic grows in older age groups.

Dr Nishat Babu adds, “There are a number of ways to get involved in volunteering. Take a look at your local community group pages on social media, shop notice boards, or even speak to the company that you work for. Many companies already have corporate volunteering programs which can provide their employees with time during working hours, to engage in volunteering. This is an especially great option for those who feel they are already pressed for time.”
