If you’d prefer something a little smaller, a mini vegetable chopper can be ideal to save time in the kitchen without taking up too much space.

Paella Pan

Paella is one of those dishes that is tasty, hearty and great for a party (poet, don’t know it, and all of that!). But if you’ve only ever had paella in a restaurant, it’s time to branch out and get yourself a paella pan.

Cooking a traditional paella takes some time and patience, but the results are absolutely worth it. Whether you’re having a party or want something a little different for your Friday night dinner, a paella served in your dedicated pan won’t disappoint.

Really, you can’t make traditional paella without using the correct pan; the name ‘paella’ actually comes from the Valencian for ‘pan’, highlighting both the origins of the dish and the importance of the vessel it’s cooked in.

The shape and size of a correct paella pan are essential for its characteristic finish, too, so if you’re a fan of regional Spanish cuisine, you should certainly consider adding one to your cooking arsenal.

Some Brits seem to struggle with cooking rice. Too much or too little water can leave your rice far from edible, resulting in a sludgy, sticky mess.

But that’s not all! There are a whole load of rice cooker recipes that work similarly to a slow cooker, making the device ideal for making stews, boiling eggs, and of course cooking other grains like barley or quinoa. Oh, and with a little knowhow, you can even start a fermentation project using a rice cooker, taking advantage of the ambient temperature of that ‘keep warm’ feature.

While not strictly a gadget, non-stick pans are a kitchen staple. Made using innovative non-stick technology, investing in some high-quality pans will improve your cooking results and make sure your food comes out great, even with minimal oil.

Non-stick pans need proper care to stop them from becoming ruined. From using wooden or silicone utensils to keeping them away from the dishwasher, if you’re going to invest in some quality non-stick pans, you don’t want to ruin them through carelessness.

The Bottom Line

Having some new goodies to play with can give a little motivation to help you cook more at home, and it will help make things a little easier, too. It’s important to remember that kitchen space can be limited, so you should think carefully about the appliances you buy to make sure you’ll really use them rather than simply stuffing them in the cupboard to gather dust.

With some new kitchen gadgets by your side, you’ll have everything you need to up your cooking game and make some top dishes from the comfort of your own home!

How To Maintain Good Eye Health: 7 Essential Tips

When it comes to protecting your eyes, many people are unsure what to do or how they could make a difference to their own eye health. Your eye health is extremely important and when taking care of your eyes correctly, various eye conditions may be prevented. In order to see clearly and to avoid eye complications or even blindness, living a healthy life really makes a difference, as well as keeping a routine of regular eye examinations with a professional.

With that in mind, here are 7 essential tips on how to maintain good eye health, so you can be sure that your eyes are well cared for.

Get Regular Eye Examinations

Visiting your optician regularly for routine eye examinations will allow for the early detection of diseases that include glaucoma and macular degeneration. Ensuring you have no existing eye concerns, you should be visiting your optician at least every two years. This way any issues with your vision and eye health can be addressed and treated.

An optometrist will give your eye health a thorough examination, addressing any concerns you have as well as determining the health of the underlying eye structure with an OCT scan.

Below are some signs you may need to book an eye examination:

  • You can’t remember the last time you had an eye examination
  • You are experiencing eye pain or frequent headaches from eye strain
  • You are at risk of eye conditions, due to a family history of eye diseases or have diabetes
  • Your vision has been worsening over time

Protect Your Eyes In The Sun

Many enjoy the sun when it decides to appear but there are some important things to keep in mind to help you stay protected from harmful UV rays. We are frequently reminded to wear SPF and protect our skin but often neglect our eyes. By wearing sunglasses with UV protection, you can enjoy the sunshine while protecting your eyes from the UV rays

For those who already wear glasses, you should invest in some prescription sunglasses, too, or consider polarised lenses or transition lenses. Your optician will be able to offer their expert advice when choosing the right option for you.

Be Aware Of Any Warning Signs

If you start to notice any concerns with your eyes or vision, it is very important you take notice of this and seek advice as soon as possible. Some signs to look out for include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Eye strain and frequent headaches
  • Difficulty seeing in low light
  • Frequent flashes of light
  • Red eyes
  • Eye pain
  • Swelling
  • Floaters in the eye

Remove Your Contact Lenses

Contact lenses offer clear vision for those who would rather not wear frames. Despite their simple use, it is crucial that they are worn and taken care of correctly. Very often, opticians will see cases of dry eye in contact lens wearers. To prevent this, irritation, and other eye conditions, ensure you wear your contact lenses according to your optician’s instructions

Maintain A Healthy Diet

To make additional efforts to care for your eye health, eating foods that are rich in vitamins can make a difference. Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, zinc, bilberry, lutein and zeaxanthin are all great for your eyes. These can often be found in foods such as kale, salmon, tuna, nuts, and eggs, as well as in dedicated eye health supplements. Helping to maintain good eye health and reducing your risk of developing eye conditions, particularly those associated with high blood pressure.

Limit Screen Time & Take Regular Breaks

With our increasing reliance on digital devices, it’s crucial to be mindful of screen time and its impact on your eyes. Prolonged exposure to screens can lead to digital eye strain, causing symptoms such as dry eyes, blurred vision, and headaches. To combat this, follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

Additionally, ensure your screen is positioned at arm’s length and slightly below eye level. Consider adjusting the brightness and contrast settings to comfortable levels, and don’t forget to blink frequently to keep your eyes moist. If you work on a computer for extended periods, investing in blue light filtering glasses may also help reduce eye strain.

Stay Properly Hydrated & Get Adequate Sleep

Maintaining proper hydration is essential for overall eye health, as dehydration can contribute to dry eyes and discomfort. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your eyes naturally lubricated. Equally important is getting sufficient sleep, as your eyes need time to rest and repair themselves.

During sleep, your eyes are continuously lubricated, which helps to clear out irritants that may have accumulated during the day. Adults should aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night. Poor sleep can lead to eye twitching, dry eyes, and even blurred vision, so establishing a consistent sleep routine will benefit both your overall health and your vision.

How Millennials Are Using Numerology To Find Their Ideal Partner

Ever open your phone and note with gravitas that the time is 11:11? Do you feel a deep pessimism about sitting in seat 13 on a flight? Did the album 22, A Million mean so much to you?

If any of those happenings chime with you, then you’re not alone; as Grazia reported back in 2018, an increasing number of ‘quasi-spiritual’ millennials are talking about numerology.

Numerology has been around for millenia, but many people are still often unaware of how it supposedly works. In short, it is the belief that there is a mystical relationship between numbers and important (and, sometimes, unimportant) milestones in your life. It is also about studying the significance of numbers in letters, words, and names. Numerology also has close ties to astrology and the paranormal, too.

If this doesn’t sound like your sort of thing, then you know where the back button is. But if you’re curious, intrigued or a firm believer in the power of digits, then you’ve come to the right place.

You’re probably wondering just how you can make numerology work for you? And, as is usually the case, can we presume that ‘work for you’ translates into helping you find love?

If you take the time to understand it and get an idea of how numerology works, some even believe you can use it to help find your perfect match. Just a bit of fun, sure, but you never know, right? Here’s how millennials are using numerology to find their IDEAL partner.

Firstly, Find Your Life Path Number

The first thing that you are going to want to look at is your life path number. If you don’t know how to calculate it, don’t worry; there are plenty of websites online that will enumerate it for you via a simple path life calculator

But if you are keen to figure out the number yourself, you can find this number yourself by adding up all the digits of your birthdate (Y+Y+Y+Y+M+M+D+D). If you get a multi-digit number other than eleven or twenty-two, add up all of the digits.

Still with us? Good.

Keep doing this until you have a single number, and then look up what that means; you might be surprised just how prescient this path number can be! For instance, IDEAL’s path number turned out to be 5, which is suggestive of inquisitiveness, intelligence and communication skills…hey, they might be onto something here you know.

Ideally, you’ll also have to calculate your potential partner’s life path number, too. Admittedly, approaching random strangers and asking them their birthday might be construed as being a little creepy, so perhaps only use these calculations with folk you already know well.

Life Path 1

People whose life path is 1 are what are known as gatherers. They enjoy the company of people and love to be around big groups, immersed in an enthusiastic atmosphere. That said, they don’t like to open up about things too much themselves, and find comfort in a crowd for this reason. This social nature is often appreciated by millennials, who value community and connection.

People with this number will generally have a large circle of friends, however, they tend to have a more close knit, concentrated group, too, of which they are fiercely loyal to. When in a relationship, they will put 100% into the person they are seeing and expect it back. If you aren’t willing to give back to them, it isn’t going to work out.

Perfect Match: 3

Compatible With: 1, 5, and 9

Life Path 2

Those who have a life path number of 2 are sensitive, empathetic and only seek strong and deep relationships and friendships. They will often put other people first and are extremely protective of all of their friends. If you are dating someone who is a 2, your emotions are going to dictate the pace of the relationship.

This aligns with many millennials’ focus on emotional intelligence and meaningful connections.

Perfect Match: 6

Compatible With: 4, 6, and 8

Life Path 3

Those who are on life path 3 are known as the popular and outgoing. They love to be incredibly social and relish being the centre of attention in conversations. If someone is a 3, they can easily seduce you and win you over. People who are 3’s are also not afraid of challenges, especially in love. They are accepting of long-distance relationships and will do what is necessary to make them work.

This trait is often seen in millennials, who enjoy engaging in dynamic social environments.

Perfect Match: 6

Compatible With: 1, 7, and 8

Life Path 4

Number 4s are organised in their working life and their love life. They want to avoid drama, complication and tend to value clear communication. Though do enjoy some excitement, they don’t want to be the ones who plan it. Therefore, you are going to have to enjoy being in control if you are dating them.

This pragmatic approach is appreciated by millennials, who often seek stability and transparency in their relationships.

Perfect Match: 6

Compatible With: 2, 4, and 8

Life Path 5

It’s us! 5s are proud sapiosexuals and are drawn to intelligent partners first and foremost. While your looks will also play a role, they are mainly interested in who you are as a person, your thoughts and your ambitions. These people want someone who is busy and driven, but even more importantly, someone who is able to engage in deep conversation.

This preference for intellectual connection is often seen among millennials, who value meaningful and stimulating conversations.

Perfect Match: 9

Compatible With: 1, 5, and 8

Life Path 6

If you are under life path 6, you are generally a very easy-going person who doesn’t take life too seriously. You enjoy going with the flow and being spontaneous and, generally, it takes a lot to get you riled up. People who are on this path will avoid confrontation and tend to steer away from deep, immersive conversations and interactions.

This carefree attitude is common among millennials, who often value experiences over material possessions.

Perfect Match: 3

Compatible With: 2, 4, and 6

Life Path 7

People in this life path are true romantics and have had dreams of their ideal wedding day since they were young. When it comes to a relationship, they seek perfection and, at times, can be picky. That being said, when a number 7 finds a partner, they consider it a lifelong relationship. As such, they are faithful and loyal.

This idealistic view of love is something many millennials can relate to, as they often seek deep, meaningful partnerships.

Perfect Match: 2

Compatible With: 3, 5, and 9

Life Path 8

Speaking of faithful companions, those on a life path of number 8 will be there for you come rain or shine. This loyalty and dedication are qualities that resonate with millennials, who value trust and reliability in their relationships.

Because of this, they can sometimes come across as needy, and expect your undivided attention. When it comes to planning, they like to be in charge as they don’t want anything unexpected to happen, and don’t exactly savour spontaneity, to put it mildly.

Should you quarrel with a life path 8, they aren’t stubborn, and will work through problems you experience as a couple in a measured, diplomatic way.

Perfect Match: 8

Compatible With: 2, 3, and 6

Life Path 9

These are the people who want to continue doing their own thing, even if they are in a relationship. Independence is important for them and can sometimes be misconstrued as disloyalty. This independent streak is often seen in millennials, who value personal growth and freedom.

A person on this life path might have trouble being faithful as they can be tempted to cheat, especially if they are not fully interested in their current partner. That said, their independent nature can be incredibly attractive.

Perfect Match: 3

Compatible With: 2, 5, and 7

The Bottom Line

Whilst this is only intended as a bit of fun, and shouldn’t be used as genuine relationship or life advice, numerology has been used since ancient times to guide people’s decisions, particularly in their love lives. Perhaps there’s some truth to it, after all?

10 Key Skills Every Business Manager Should Have

The ol’ career ladder. Are you looking to climb it for financial or fulfillment reasons? Well, what would you say if we told you there’s a role where those two roles are not mutually exclusive? If you’re anything like us, your ears are now pricked and purposeful, waiting to hear more.

Well, there is such a role, one which combines the lucrative with people skills, interaction and personal growth. To succeed, you’re going to need several job specific skills in your arsenal, and these are those; our 10 key skills every business manager should have.

Strategic Thinking

High on the list of must-have skills for business managers is strategic thinking. This pertains to the ability to understand the broader business landscape, envision the long-term future, and formulate a comprehensive strategy of recruitment, training and delivering that manages to marry both. In essence, the manager should think like a chess player, always anticipating the next move and the subsequent ripple effects.

Communication

Management, at least the successful kind, is all about people, make no mistake. That is the definition of the role; to handle the various needs of employees, to recognise their unique skill sets and to get the best out of them.

Communication, then, is king; your door should always be open to those you ‘manage’, you should give off an approachable yet authoritative air, and the opportunity for dialogue between you and staff should be ever present.

Though clipped emails and monosyllabic phone exchanges certainly have their place when time is of the essence and flowery paragraphs will only impede productivity, face-to-face, clear communication is still the most important tool a leader has in their arsenal. This approach will give you the tools to motivate your staff most effectively.

Yep, if there was one defining aspect of how to become a successful business manager, it would be communication.

Problem Solving

The business world is fraught with challenges and obstacles at every turn. It is the manager’s prerogative to not just react to these problems but to proactively ideate and implement robust solutions. This requires a keen analytical mind, the ability for lateral thinking, and practical application.

A business manager is nothing if not a firefighter. In smaller businesses, the buck stops with this role, and in larger ones, whole departments depend on his or her decision making. Since you’ll be supervising and optimising the work of employees and the company’s operations, bumps in the road are inevitable. It’s the business manager’s job to find workable solutions to these issues through a process of analytics and evaluation, always with the goal of business growth driving things forward.

Organisational Awareness

In a larger organisation, it’s vital that the business manager is well versed and pitch perfect on the structure of the company and its collective goals, since it’s their role to find the clearest path to achieving these goals.

Via communication with other managers and employees, and often in writing and redefining an ongoing company mission statement, an all encompassing view of the soul of the organisation is achieved. No one should know the inner workings of a business like the business manager.

Foresight

A business manager is both constantly evaluating and predicting; looking back at past mistakes and successes in order to devise new and innovative plans for future progress. And this ability to map out company prosperity going forward isn’t only defined by financial gains; the business manager should take as much pride in mapping out personal development and breakthroughs in individual employees and the harmony of the team, as a whole. Again, this is only fully realised through expert motivation, communication, nurturing and mentoring.

Financial Acumen

A business manager doesn’t need to be a chartered accountant but understanding the basic principles of accounting, budgeting, and financial planning is imperative. This skill enables them to make informed business decisions, contributing significantly to the company’s financial health.

Delegation

Effective delegation is a crucial skill for any business manager. It involves assigning tasks to the right team members based on their strengths and expertise, thereby ensuring that projects are completed efficiently and to a high standard. Delegation not only helps in managing workload but also empowers employees, fostering a sense of trust and responsibility. For those looking to enhance their delegation skills, line management courses can be particularly beneficial, providing structured learning and practical strategies.

Time Management

Time management is another essential skill for business managers. With numerous responsibilities and deadlines, the ability to prioritise tasks and manage time effectively is paramount. This skill ensures that important tasks are completed on time, reducing stress and increasing productivity. Good time management also allows managers to allocate time for strategic planning and personal development, contributing to overall business success.

Emotional Intelligence

Managing people involves understanding them, and that’s where emotional intelligence comes into play. A manager with high emotional intelligence can recognise emotions (their own and others’), empathise with their team members, handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and cultivate a harmonious work environment.

Adaptability

Finally, and since the business manager represents the company’s ‘all seeing eye’ in terms of staff and operations, it’s often necessary (and expected) that the role involves having to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty.

Employees aren’t often inspired by someone yelling from the sidelines, that’s for sure. Instead, a knowledge of each and every role within the business, and a willingness to understand and engage with those roles, is required.

Being flexible and adaptable will breed loyalty, encourage better workplace contentment, and, ultimately, make your office a more enjoyable place to work.

11 Essential Digital Marketing Tips For Your E-Commerce Store

Thinking of starting an online shop? Or perhaps you’re in the throes of the early ups and downs of a new start-up enterprise? Well, then we’re sure you’ll know that customer engagement and reach is everything.

In the modern marketing environment, there are so many opportunities for businesses to engage with customers, whether you’re a niche shop offering something unique or esoteric, or an online giant such as Amazon. So if you’re trying to think of ways to give your business that extra boost, here are 11 essential digital marketing tips for your e-commerce shop.

Build A Good Website

To put it frankly, your website is the most important marketing tool you have. Indeed, no matter what your other marketing activities amount to and regardless of how a potential customer discovers your business, they will ultimately end up at your website and if that website appears amateurish, chances are interest and investment is likely to be minimal.

Read: 9 ways to improve your website for your customers

Foster A Mobile-First Approach

In a world where smartphones are increasingly dominating digital interactions, adopting a mobile-first approach to your design and marketing strategies is essential. Ensure your e-commerce store website is mobile-responsive, providing a seamless user experience across all devices. Additionally, consider app development or optimisation of Mobile SEO to keep up with your mobile-centric customers.

Consider Other Sales Channels

If you’re just starting out, consider using an e-commerce platform that provides everything you need to sell your stuff online. This isn’t a relationship you should enter into lightly, however, and certainly not without thought; the smooth running of this side of things can determine whether or not your business turns into a success in the long term.

Some of the most popular e-commerce platforms for outsourcing some of the hard work include Shopify, WooCommerce, Alibaba, Wix and Squarespace.

Harness The Power Of Email & SMS

It may seem a surprising statistic, but according to Baymard Institute, 69% of shopping carts are abandoned before any purchase is completed. That’s a lot of potential sales going down the drain. One simple way to address this problem is by having a simple email reminder system in place.

Known to business buffs as the email recovery campaign, this tactic is all about getting your customers to return to the site and complete the purchase that they were umming and ahhing about originally. Consider using a fun, seemingly personal subject line like ‘still on your mind?’ or ‘Forgot your (enter product name)? It’s still waiting for you’ in order to entice them back.

Similarly, sending wishlist reminders is a useful marketing tool for e-commerce sites, reminding potential customers of things that they’ve previously signalled they want and in doing so triggering them to part with their hard-earned cash.

And while it may seem old-fashioned, mass text messaging through bulk sms services, as well as both online and physical newsletters, are hugely important too, as they encourage engagement and nurture that all important, exclusive, ‘part of the club’ feel.

Don’t Overdo Social Media (But Certainly Do It!)

The advent of social media has provided business with a more direct and targeted marketing tool that reaches across large and diverse audiences and costs less than traditional marketing techniques. That’s great, but it can equally be overwhelming trying to divide your time between running and improving your business and networking with your clients and targeted markets on social media. Spreading yourself too thinly, it seems, is a real danger with such abundant platforms now in place.

One way to effectively maximise the power of social media is to focus on just a few key sites, rather than as many as you can get your clicking finger on. Attempting to register an active business presence on all social media networks could end up being counterproductive. So consider what social media platform your potential clients use the most; if it’s TikTok, than consider investing in TikTok advertising to target them and drive sales. Of course, if you plan to share short clips of your products, a free video editor can help you quickly produce high-quality videos that your audience will love.

Optimise SEO For Better Visibility

When it comes to digital marketing, one of the first things to do is to get noticed online and get your site ranked. Regarding ranking well on Google, you need to prove that you’re a trustworthy and valuable source and if you can prove your worth, you have a greater chance of ranking well.

It’s also important to drive organic traffic to your site which can be done through honest and transparent link building. Consider hiring an SEO specialist to help your website be seen online.

Search engine optimisation is vital for the visibility of your website on search engines like Google. To optimise your SEO effectively, ensure that your website is well structured, with relevant, high-quality content and proper keyword usage, link building, and metadata. SEO is a long-term strategy, but it can provide a significant competitive edge in the digital marketplace.

In short, your brand performance depends on it.

Expand Your Reach With Global SEO Strategies

As your e-commerce business grows, you may find opportunities to expand beyond domestic markets and tap into international customer bases. Selling globally, however, requires a sophisticated understanding of local search behaviours, cultural nuances, and region-specific search engine algorithms. This is where partnering with an international SEO agency becomes invaluable. These specialists understand the complexities of multi-market optimisation, from implementing hreflang tags and managing country-specific domains to navigating local keyword research and cultural sensitivities in different regions.

An experienced international SEO agency can help ensure your products appear in search results across various countries, taking into account local competition, search trends, and regulatory requirements that might affect your online visibility in new markets.

Collaborate With Influencers

At one point in time, the word ‘influencer’ would refer to the likes of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr — people who had a voice to influence the masses for a better change in the world. With advancements in technology, however, and the creation of revolutionary social media platforms, the meaning of that word is now significantly different.

Today’s Instagram influencers, resented by many but certainly not to be ignored, are using their online presence to propel messages to millions of people around the globe — and this has created a new trend in marketing. Yep, forget about television adverts and magazine spreads, promoting your brand through influencer marketing is the way forward.

According to a fascinating article from ADWEEK, a whopping 40% of people say they’ve purchased an item online after seeing it used by an influencer on social media. Influencers have established relationships with their followers, stay connected with them everyday and interact with them directly, and as such, people trust them.

Invest In PPC (Pay-Per-Click) Advertising

10 Oral Health Mistakes That Could Jeopardise The Long-Term Health of Your Teeth

Good oral hygiene is crucial to the overall general health and well-being of an individual. Taking care of one’s teeth is not just about having a great smile or fresh breath, but it also involves eradicating oral diseases, many of which can have severe impacts on one’s quality of life.

Unfortunately, many of us unknowingly make several oral health mistakes that could be detrimental to the long-term health of our teeth. Here are 10 such common mistakes and how to avoid them.

Skipping Regular Dental Check-ups

One of the major mistakes many people make is neglecting regular dental check-ups. Routine dental visits ward off the majority of looming oral health issues, like cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and other dental emergencies. Early detection of oral health problems allows practitioners to provide prompt, minimal, and cost-effective treatment.

Not Flossing Daily

Brushing twice daily is important, but it does not remove the food particles and plaque between your teeth. Flossing is an integral part of oral hygiene which many overlook – it removes the hard-to-reach debris between the teeth and reduces the risk of gum disease and tooth decay.

Research shows that only 30% of Americans floss daily, yet this simple habit can prevent 40% of cavities that occur between teeth. The spaces between your teeth account for 35% of your tooth surfaces, making flossing essential for comprehensive cleaning. If traditional string floss feels challenging, consider water flossers or interdental brushes as effective alternatives. The key is consistency – even flossing a few times per week provides significant benefits compared to not flossing at all.

Incorrect Brushing Technique

Sometimes it’s not about brushing twice daily, but how you do it. Vigorous brushing can cause damage to tooth enamel, leading to tooth sensitivity and gum recession. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush, apply a gentle, circular motion to massage the teeth and gums rather than an aggressive back-and-forth motion.

Proper brushing technique involves holding your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and using short, gentle strokes. Spend at least two minutes brushing, dedicating 30 seconds to each quadrant of your mouth. Electric toothbrushes can be particularly beneficial as they provide consistent motion and often include built-in timers. Increasingly, many are using Invisalign to straighten their teeth, and proper brushing becomes even more critical during orthodontic treatment to maintain optimal oral health around aligners and prevent staining.

Using An Old Toothbrush

As good oral habits involve brushing regularly, it’s equally important to replace your toothbrush every three to four months. An old, frayed toothbrush does not clean your teeth effectively and can store harmful bacteria that lead to infections.

Overconsumption Of Acidic Foods & Drinks

Certain foods and beverages like sodas, citrus fruits, wine and coffee contain acid that can erode tooth enamel, making teeth more susceptible to decay. Limit your intake of these substances, and remember to rinse your mouth with water after consumption.

The timing of acidic consumption matters significantly. Your mouth’s pH drops below the critical level of 5.5 when exposed to acids, creating an environment where enamel demineralisation occurs. This process can last up to 30 minutes after consumption. To minimise damage, avoid brushing immediately after consuming acidic foods or drinks – wait at least 30-60 minutes to allow your saliva to neutralise the acids naturally. Consider using a straw when drinking acidic beverages to minimise contact with teeth, and try to consume acidic foods as part of meals rather than as standalone snacks.

Over-Reliance On Whitening Products

While everyone cherishes white teeth, overusing teeth-whitening products can lead to problems. They often contain harsh chemicals that can weaken the enamel and cause tooth sensitivity. Always consult with a dental professional before starting any whitening regimen.

Remember that intrinsic stains (from medications or trauma) cannot be addressed with surface whitening treatments and require professional evaluation. The healthiest approach focuses on preventing stains through good oral hygiene rather than relying heavily on whitening products.

Ignoring Gum Health

Ignoring your gums is just as bad as ignoring your teeth. Redness, itchiness, and bleeding gums can be signs of gingivitis, or early-stage gum disease. Make sure to take good care of your gums by brushing gently along the gum line and flossing regularly.

Gum disease affects nearly half of adults over 30, yet it’s largely preventable with proper care. The progression from gingivitis to periodontitis can happen quickly if left untreated, potentially leading to tooth loss and systemic health issues. Studies have linked gum disease to heart disease, diabetes, and stroke, making gum health a whole-body concern.

Using Your Teeth As Tools

Many people unconsciously use their teeth to open packages, crack nuts, tear tape, or even open bottles. This habit puts excessive stress on your teeth and can lead to chipped, cracked, or broken teeth, as well as damage to existing dental work like fillings or crowns. Your teeth are designed for chewing food, not as substitutes for scissors, bottle openers, or pliers. Keep proper tools handy and resist the temptation to use your teeth for anything other than eating. The convenience of using your teeth as tools is never worth the potential dental emergency that could follow.

Nighttime Snacking

Snacking just before bedtime, especially sugar-laden snacks, provides fuel for cavity-causing bacteria. It’s even more harmful if you go to bed without brushing afterward as it allows the food particles to remain on your teeth all night.

Avoiding Fluoride

Fluoride fights cavities and makes teeth more resistant to decay. Some people choose natural, fluoride-free toothpaste, unintentionally missing out on the protective effects against cavities. Make sure your toothpaste contains fluoride, and if you live in an area where the water is not fluoridated, your dentist may suggest using a fluoride rinse or supplement.

The Bottom Line

Remember, your dental health plays a significant role in determining your overall health. Avoiding these mistakes and maintaining good oral hygiene habits will go a long way in preserving your smile for many years to come. After all, a healthy mouth is indeed a gateway to a healthy body.

What Factors Might Affect The Cost Of Car Insurance?

Since you’ve landed here with us, we’re going to assume you’ve just passed your test or have recently invested in a sparkly new motor. If it’s not too presumptuous of us, congratulations!

We can see you’re raring to hit the high road, pedal to the metal and your drivetime playlist on the stereo. We’re right there with you, in the passenger seat, slyly turning down the volume and praying you don’t crash on your first spin around the block.

We hate to be that guy, we really do, but before we race off into the sunset and leave all our troubles in the rearview mirror, you’re first going to need to deal with the boring details of bureaucracy. More specifically, you’re going to need to find car insurance

With such deliberations, it’s essential that you keep costs low. If you’re wondering what factors might affect the cost of car insurance, then you’ve come to the right place. Let’s find out…

It’s All About Pre-Determined Risk

When it comes to finding a competitive quotation for car insurance it is very much linked to the type of car that you are trying to insure. Most insurance companies will work on a scale that groups vehicles according to pre-determined risk.

There are many ways to compensate for a vehicle being in a higher group when we look at ways that will reduce the premium, such as increasing a policy excess or improving security. For example, the fitting of a Thatcham 2 device, which is an insurance-approved immobiliser, will help your premium.

Using a black-box type device in your car to monitor the safety of your driving can also help. This device gathers data that records speed, braking, acceleration and cornering and also takes a look at the times that you’re on the road, the number of miles that you cover and the type of roads you drive on.

It is estimated that in the first two years of driving, someone with a black box installed in their car can save £2,000 compared to an equivalent insurance policy without one.

Vehicle Grouping

In insurance, all vehicles are assigned a grouping from 1 to 50. A vehicle in Group 1 will be the cheapest to insure, and one in Group 50, the most expensive. This tried and tested grouping system helps insurance companies to work out the cost of insurance premiums on a basis that relates to risk and cost to repair.

The vehicles that are grouped as 1, if you are looking for the cheapest cars to insure, include Citroen C1, Fiat Panda, Nissan Micra, Skoda Citigo, Smart ForFour, and Vauxhall Corsa hatchback, to name a few. It is worth checking out the full list.

Group 25, mid-range, will include vehicles such as the Audi A3. The Audio A6 is in Group 50, so the model does make a difference.

Each insurance group will also be assigned a letter to indicate how standard security features have been covered. The letter E will mean that the security requirements have been exceeded, whereas a letter A will indicate that they are just acceptable. A letter D will suggest that the car does not meet the standard security requirements. Letter U will be because a car is a long way from meeting the required security standards. You may also encounter P, where there is not enough data about the car to know, and letter G if it is an import car.

Factors Affecting Car Insurance Grouping

Many factors will affect insurance grouping. One of the main ones is performance. The clue to this is your engine size and whether you have a sportier or more deluxe model of vehicle.

Other factors will include the repair times that are known for a vehicle, the cost of buying a new vehicle of that type, and the price of parts. Also, the safety of the vehicle in terms of the types of bumpers and security devices that are fitted will be considered.

In other words, any factor that will increase the risk of an accident, including potentially higher speeds, means more damage to the vehicle, or mean that there is more chance of the vehicle being stolen from its owner, which ultimately leads to a higher cost of insurance.

Insurance companies and their regulators base risk on insurance histories in terms of the average claim’s history of different driver types of vehicles and their drivers.

Consider Your Annual Mileage

One often overlooked factor that can significantly impact your car insurance premium is your annual mileage. The more you drive, the higher the risk of an accident, which can lead to higher premiums. If you can accurately estimate and possibly reduce your annual mileage, you might find yourself with a more affordable insurance quote. For instance, if you can carpool, use public transport, or work from home more frequently, you could save a considerable amount on your insurance.

The Age Of Your Vehicle

The newer vehicle types will attract the highest insurance premiums. This is because they represent more of a theft risk than the older vehicles that thieves make less money from. That is not to say that old vehicles are never stolen but the risk is reduced.

Consequently, we can start to see how it can be cheaper to insure a certain vehicle type. It is easy to have an idea of what will make a vehicle more expensive but then it is always good to check out the exact insurance group as this will ultimately determine the insurance premium. We can, in a sense, try to anticipate our insurance premium when buying a vehicle but it is better to obtain an insurance quote before purchasing so that we are sure it is affordable.

When we are looking to change our vehicle, our first thought should be our insurance company as it will not just mean potentially an additional premium but also a higher premium every year after that, depending on the vehicle we are switching to.

Assess Whether Gap Insurance Is Worth It

When purchasing a new car, you might want to consider whether gap insurance is worth it. Gap insurance covers the difference between the amount your insurer pays out if your car is written off and the amount you still owe on a car loan or the car’s original purchase price. This can be particularly useful if you have a high-value vehicle or a significant loan, as it ensures you are not left out of pocket in the event of a total loss.

Evaluate Your No Claims Discount

Building up a no claims discount (NCD) can be one of the most effective ways to reduce your car insurance costs over time. Each year you drive without making a claim, you earn a discount on your premium. Some insurers offer protection for your NCD, allowing you to make a certain number of claims without losing your discount. It’s worth considering whether this option is available and beneficial for you, as it can provide long-term savings.

Your Job Matters, Too

According to research by MoneySupermarket some drivers could save over £677 by simply changing the job title on their premium form. And while you should always be honest about your job, in insurance applications, the title itself matters. Some carry higher premiums than others.

According to research, ‘chef’ will return a premium that is nearly £100 higher than ‘kitchen staff’. Call yourself a music teacher rather than just a teacher? You could be quoted around £86 more. Copy writers will also return a different quote to just a writer. Simple semantics we know, but we don’t write the rules.

The Bottom Line

Navigating the complexities of car insurance can seem daunting, but understanding the various factors that influence your premium can lead to significant savings. Remember, the key is to balance cost with adequate coverage, ensuring you are protected without overpaying. Safe driving!

Must Have Korean Skincare Products To Have On Your Radar This Summer

As the summer sun graces us with its presence, it’s time to revamp our skincare routines to ensure our skin remains radiant, protected, and hydrated. Korean skincare, renowned for its innovative and effective ingredients, offers a treasure trove of solutions perfect for the summer months.

Indeed, Korean skincare has taken the beauty world by storm in recent years. Known for its innovation and effectiveness, Korean cosmetics are now a staple in many people’s skincare routines. But what sets Korean skincare apart from its Western counterparts?

The Korean approach to beauty is deeply rooted in a philosophy of prevention and gentle care. Unlike the Western focus on treating skin issues as they arise, Korean skincare emphasises maintaining healthy skin through a consistent and multi-step routine. This often includes double cleansing, toning, essence, serums, moisturisers, and sun protection. The goal is to nourish and protect the skin, preventing problems before they start.

In contrast, Western skincare products are often thought to contain harsher, more acidic ingredients aimed at quickly addressing skin issues like acne, pigmentation, and signs of ageing. While effective, these ingredients can sometimes be too aggressive, leading to irritation and sensitivity, especially for those with delicate skin.

Here are the must-have Korean skincare ingredients to keep your skin glowing and healthy this season, along with some must-try products and what they do.

Snail Mucin: Ideal For Tightening & Smoothing

Snail mucin might sound unconventional, but it’s a powerhouse ingredient in Korean skincare. These components work together to tighten and smooth the skin, making it an ideal addition to your summer skincare arsenal.

Thanks to the hyaluronic acid in the snail mucin, it has moisturising properties that help lock in moisture too. Not only does it replenish and revitalise dry damaged skin, it also helps minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles making it ideal for maturing skin.

Double Sunscreen: Ideal For Ultimate Sun Protection

When it comes to sun protection in Korea, it’s all about the double SPF trend. Korean skincare offers both chemical and mineral sunscreens that cater to different skin needs. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays, converting them into heat and releasing them from the skin, while mineral sunscreens create a physical barrier that reflects UV rays.

Both types are essential for protecting your skin from harmful UV radiation. Additionally, many Korean sunscreens have mattifying properties, perfect for keeping your skin shine-free during those hot summer days.

5 Unusual Wellness Ingredients That You May Not Have Tried Yet

0

Most wellness conversations revolve around the same familiar names—turmeric, omega-3s, probiotics. But there are plenty of other plant-based options with fascinating histories and traditional uses that rarely make it into mainstream health discussions. Some have been sustaining communities for centuries, others have surprising research behind them, and a few offer completely different approaches to supporting wellbeing. Here are 5 that deserve more attention.

Sea Buckthorn: The Siberian Beauty Secret

Long before vitamin C serums became skincare gospel, Siberian women were using sea buckthorn berries to keep their skin glowing through brutal winters. These bright orange berries pack more vitamin C than oranges and contain rare omega-7 fatty acids that most people don’t even know exist.

What makes sea buckthorn particularly interesting is that omega-7 content—palmitoleic acid—which appears in very few food sources. Some research suggests these fatty acids might support skin health from the inside out, though you’ll struggle to find sea buckthorn anything in most British health shops. The berries themselves taste like a cross between cranberries and passion fruit, with a tartness that’ll make your face scrunch up.

Acai: Beyond The Instagram Bowl

Yes, acai made it to Britain eventually, but mostly as overpriced smoothie bowl toppings. The real story is more interesting than the wellness marketing suggests. In the Brazilian Amazon, acai isn’t a superfood—it’s just food. Local communities have been living on these purple berries for generations, not because they read that they’re loaded with antioxidants, but because acai palms grow everywhere and the berries fill you up.

The deep purple colour comes from anthocyanins, the same compounds that make blueberries blue and red wine red. What’s genuinely impressive about acai is the sheer concentration—it’s like nature decided to cram as many of these compounds as possible into one small berry. But here’s the thing: by the time acai reaches Britain, much of what made it special has usually been processed out. The fresh berries oxidise rapidly, which is why the best acai products are freeze-dried within hours of harvest, and acai supplements are gaining increasing traction, too.

Pine Bark Extract: When Trees Fight Back

This one sounds made up, but French maritime pine bark extract (try saying that three times fast) has a surprisingly robust research background. The extract, standardised as Pycnogenol, contains proanthocyanidins—compounds that trees produce to protect themselves from UV damage and oxidative stress.

The discovery was almost accidental. French explorer Jacques Cartier’s crew was suffering from scurvy during a harsh Canadian winter in 1535, and local indigenous people showed them how to brew tea from pine bark and needles. The sailors recovered, though it took scientists another 400 years to figure out why. Pine bark extract won’t cure scurvy (we’ve got vitamin C for that), but the proanthocyanidins might support circulation and skin health.

Schisandra: The Five-Flavour Berry

Traditional Chinese medicine has this concept of foods that hit all five taste categories—sweet, sour, bitter, pungent, and salty. Schisandra berries manage this impressive feat, which is why they’re called wu wei zi, literally ‘five flavour fruit.’

These small red berries grow wild across northern China and Russia, and they’ve been used traditionally to support what modern practitioners might call stress resilience. Schisandra contains lignans—plant compounds that are structurally similar to human hormones but much gentler. The berries are traditionally prepared as a tea, though the taste is an acquired one. Think cranberry sauce mixed with black pepper and a hint of lemon.

Baobab: The Tree That Grows Upside Down

African folklore says the gods planted the baobab tree upside down, with its roots in the air. The fruit powder from these massive trees has been sustaining communities across sub-Saharan Africa for millennia, long before anyone coined the term ‘superfood’.

Baobab fruit dries naturally on the tree, leaving behind a white powder that’s naturally tart and slightly sweet. It contains more vitamin C than oranges, more potassium than bananas, and more antioxidants than goji berries – though comparing everything to goji berries feels a bit 2015 at this point.

What’s more interesting is the prebiotic fibre content, which feeds beneficial gut bacteria without the digestive drama that some fibre supplements cause.

The powder mixes easily into water or smoothies and tastes like sherbet with a grown-up tang. Unlike many African plant products that have been commercialised without benefiting local communities, several baobab suppliers work directly with women’s cooperatives across Africa, providing fair wages for harvest and processing.

The Reality Check

These plant compounds aren’t meant to treat or cure any medical conditions. Individual responses vary considerably, and what works for one person may do nothing for another. Always consult with a healthcare professional before trying new botanical products, especially if you have existing health conditions or take medication.

10 Essential Travel Tips For Solo Female Travellers

Solo travelling is without doubt gaining momentum and popularity. That said, it’s an approach that does require an extra layer of thought and planning. With over 50% of women revealing they would be concerned about their safety when travelling solo, there are, fortunately, some ways to stay safer while travelling abroad.

From ensuring you thoroughly research your destination and, especially, the area you intend on staying, to making sure your valuables and cash are kept safe, the below tips can help solo travellers feel increased peace of mind while abroad.

Book A Tour

Even solo travellers want to travel with people sometimes, especially with people you have something in common with.

Booking a tour, whether it is a walking tour of the city or an excursion to a nearby hotspot, is one of the easiest and safest ways to explore a new destination. Reputable operators will provide you with specific itineraries, meaning you can keep loved ones back home in the loop, and will usually be hosted by locals, offering you a true insight.

Easing in with a tour designed for solo adventurers gives you a chance to get your bearings and get comfortable, meeting like-minded travellers in a welcoming, structured environment. We’re huge fans of Airbnb Experiences, which is a great way to meet like-minded people and engage with fellow sightseers and travellers. Moreover, gaining firsthand knowledge from experienced locals on all manner of subjects is a wonderful opportunity that shouldn’t be missed.

If your’e on a budget, many places, especially popular cities, have free walking tours dotted along the city centre, giving tourists a local’s insight of the area. While they are free, it is sometimes expected to tip your guide, so ensure you have a bit of cash on you before you set off.

Join Local Meetups

Another excellent way to connect with others and enhance your solo travel experience is by joining local meetups. Websites and apps like Meetup or Couchsurfing often have groups dedicated to various interests, from hiking and food tasting to language exchange and cultural tours. Participating in these meetups not only provides a sense of community but also allows you to discover hidden gems and local favourites that you might not find in guidebooks.

Engaging with locals and fellow travellers can lead to lasting friendships and memorable experiences. Read reviews and choose well-rated groups to prioritise your safety. Always, always ensure that these meetups are taking place in public and in groups before committing plans to your calendar.

Read Reviews Scrupulously

Read the reviews of hotels or b&bs you are considering scrupulously to ensure the location is safe and near amenities such as public transport. If you are travelling on a budget, it can be easy to ignore reviews in favour of saving money, however you must ensure there are plenty of reviews available, as this will give you a better understanding of where you will be staying. This becomes particularly crucial for women travelling together, emphasising the importance of prioritising safety and convenience when selecting accommodations for a worry-free journey.

If you are a social person, then staying in a shared room in a hostel is a great way to make new friends while still maintaining your solo traveller independence. Many hostels offer female only dorms, offered for the solo traveller and girl group in mind, so it is advisable to seek out places that offer this.

Keep Valuables Locked Up

Nothing dampens the holiday spirit like having your valuables stolen, so be vigilant and keep your luggage safe. If you are staying in a hotel room, keep your valuables locked in the safe to give you an extra blanket of security and peace of mind. If you are staying in a shared room in a hostel, most provide lockers, so ensure you travel with a padlock and keep the key on you at all times.

Hotels aren’t generally responsible for items in your room, so if you do have anything particularly valuable, then it is advisable to leave it with the front desk. A reputable hotel will give you a written receipt that you have left your goods with them, meaning if they doget lost, then the hotel is liable for this.

Let Loved Ones Know Your Plans

Give your friends, family and yourself some peace of mind and let them know a rough itinerary of your holiday before you go, so if they don’t hear from you then they will know where they should contact.

If you intend on going with the flow and don’t have a specific plan in place, then at least give loved ones a rough idea of where you will be staying.

While thousands of women travel alone every year without incident, unfortunately, there are lots of reports of harrowing experiences of female solo travellers getting into danger. While these reports should not deter you from travelling, it is nessecary to take precautions.

We are all guilty of not sending the necessary “I’m home” text, so avoid causing unnecessary stress and allow a trust family member to track your location.

You could even consider using a GPS tracker; there are numerous apps – Bsafe and NOONLIGHT are two popular ones – which allow loved ones to know your activity, offering them peace of mind that you are safe. If, in an emergency, they can’t locate you, then they will be able to alert the necessary authorities.

Hide In Plain Sight

To avoid drawing attention to the fact you are a solo traveller, avoid dressing like a tell-tale tourist and, instead, dress as simply as you can. In fact, you should take note of how locals are dressed to help you curate your outfits. If you notice locals covering certain parts of their body, for example, then you should do the same. Not only will this help you blend in, but it also means you don’t risk appearing (or, frankly, being) disrespectful.

In order to blend in, you must also avoid having anything too valuable out and about. A pickpocket will spot your fancy camera or your new smartphone and instantly see you as a target. While travelling with a phone or a camera can be unavoidable, there are ways you can conceal these high value items. Avoid storing your camera in a dedicated camera bag and instead keep it in a simple and inconspicuous bag.

Give Yourself A Backup

Travelling solo means you have to not only be hyper-aware of your surroundings but also allow yourself a backup. In the event you become embroiled in a situation while out and about, you might want to carry a dummy wallet on you to hand over, keeping the main bulk of your cash hidden on your person.

Flat money belts which are strapped underneath your clothes can store cash, cards and any valuables, or for a budget method you can get creative. You could even use a tampon applicator as a makeshift wallet to keep cash hidden – it is exceptionally unlikely a robber will be looking to steal a tampon.

Buy A Local SIM

As of 31st December 2020, the EU rules on roaming charges no longer apply in the UK, meaning the amount your phone operator can charge you to use your phone in EU countries is no longer capped, resulting in potentially exceptionally high bills. As each mobile operator has a different cost for roaming charges, you must check before travelling to see how much using your phone on holiday could cost.

Being too concerned about using your phone, in case of high bill prices, means you are putting yourself in danger as you are unable to contact anyone if you feel unsafe.

So, when you first arrive, consider investing in a local PAYG SIM card to use while abroad and make a note of loved one’s numbers and the emergency numbers of your destination. If you intend on doing a lot of travelling this year, then you should consider upgrading your current phone tariff to allow data roaming, as this will save you more money down the line.

Let Your Bank Know

If your bank notices a seemingly random payment from a local bar in Spain or Vietnam, for instance, then they may flag this as suspicious activity and freeze your card.

In an increasingly cashless society, having your card and account frozen is possibly the worst thing that can happen while on the first day of your holiday, and can leave you in a vulnerable position. With this in mind, make sure you bring enough cash to keep you going in case your card gets frozen, lost or stolen, and keep the cash hidden to avoid losing this too.

Let your bank know prior to going abroad to avoid any misunderstandings and having to call up your bank while on holiday. This can be done by calling them up or many banks allow you to set a holiday on your account online.

Choose Your Destination With Intent

The beauty of solo travelling is that it gives you the perfect opportunity to be totally selfish! We have all had to compromise while on a group holiday and do something we perhaps wouldn’t have chosen to do ourselves but didn’t want to seem like a party-pooper.

Now is your time to make all the important calls yourself! Think about what you look for in a holiday; do you enjoy long hikes or exploring a bustling city, or perhaps you just want to lay on a beach and finally read that book. Maybe you’re in this thing for the local street food, or for the unique, idiosyncratic architecture. Wherever you choose, make sure you’re choosing it with your interests in mind.

The Bottom Line

Solo travelling is one of the most gratifying things you can do. While you must ensure you take the necessary steps to stay safe while abroad, you should also take steps to ensure you make the most of your holiday. Bon Voyage!

Why Cuban Chains Are A Staple Of Hip-Hop Fashion

Gold chains, chunky gold rings, and iced-out items are not just simple pieces of jewellery – instead, they’ve been iconic symbols, leaving a lasting impression in fashion but, more importantly, the hip-hop community. And it’s the Cuban chain that is perhaps the most iconic of all here.

From cultural symbolism to aesthetic appeal – here’s how the Cuban link chain became one of the most iconic pieces within hip-hop culture.

The Cuban Chain’s Journey Through Time

Though somewhat mysterious, the origins of the men’s Cuban chain are believed to emerge from the 70’s hip-hop scene. Specifically from the Bronx, NY – an old-school birthday party thrown by DJ Kool Herc, a legend of hip-hop music. Following its appearance, it became a staple very quickly – soon becoming synonymous with the genre.

Others trace the birth of the staple gold Cuban chain to Miami, Florida – popular among Miami Cubans. Hence why, the Cuban chain is also known as the Miami Cuban chain. No matter its origin, this piece of jewellery remains to be an iconic piece that will make any outfit look powerful.

What Makes A Cuban Link Chain What It Is?

At its core, the Cuban chain looks different as it’s made up of round or oval interlocking links – but there’s a lot more it than this.

Beyond what you immediately see, the Cuban chain’s classic style is tightly knit, creating an illusion of a rope-like chain – giving it a bold, chunky look that stands out. The gold version, in particular, has been a consistent favourite for decades – but sterling silver, rose gold, and white gold are also popular.

Why The Cuban Chain?

It’s not just about the style; it’s about the piece of culture and history that it carries with it – proving its timelessness decades in. Beyond its strong aesthetic, it became a symbol of wealth and success – within a culture where many come from underprivileged backgrounds, wearing the Cuban chain represented the rise to wealth and success that they finally made it.

From icons like Jay Z and Notorious B.I.G to more recent artists like Drake and DJ Khaled – the style continues to be a classic within the industry. It is the perfect blend of historical significance, iconic influence, and contemporary style, making it the number-one choice in the industry.

A Symbol Of Empowerment

For many within the hip-hop community, this simple piece of jewellery is a statement and proof of empowerment. It is a symbol of the possibility of transformation – something that didn’t feel attainable to many. This chain became a significant statement that many artists and fashion icons of the tangible rewards of their success. The weight and shine of the chain proves not only the financial success but also the journey that they went on – rising above one’s circumstances.

Cuban Chains In Hip-Hop Songs

The Cuban link chain isn’t just a visual motif in hip-hop culture – it’s also been immortalised in the lyrics and titles of numerous songs and albums. These mentions further cement its status as an iconic symbol within the genre.

One of the most notable references is Raekwon’s seminal album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, released in 1995. This album is often hailed as a classic in the hip-hop community, and its title alone underscores the significance of the Cuban link chain. The album’s gritty, streetwise narratives and luxurious imagery perfectly encapsulate the duality of struggle and success that the Cuban chain represents.

From Kanye West’s much talked about, eventually abandoned album Yandhi, the song Cuban Link boasts a simple refrain:

“I need a new Cuban Link, I need a new Cuban Link
I need a new Cuban Link, I need a new Cuban Link
I need a new Cuban Link, I need a new Cuban Link
I need a new Cuban Link, I need a new Cuban Link
I need a new Cuban, I need a new Cuban Link”.

Yep, some might call it an obsession.

Indeed, the Cuban link chain continues to be celebrated in the music and lives of hip-hop artists, solidifying its place as an enduring emblem of the genre.

The Bottom Line

The Cuban chain continues to be one of the most popular pieces of jewellery within hip-hop culture – becoming the staple piece to many an outfit. Its unique design is recognised by many, with the weight and shine reflecting more than just its aesthetics but the true meaning of growth and perseverance that many artists within the community endure to get to the top. It’s a statement of power, strength and great taste.

10 Must Visit Ports For Your Next Luxury Caribbean Cruise

The Caribbean calls to mind the infinite possibility of golden sands, crystal clear waters and Creole cuisine. But to only allow the imagination to take you that far is to deny the other pleasures the region has to offer in abundance.

Sure, the beaches are secluded, but the ports and towns are buzzing with life and swagger. Yes, the waters are clear, but they’re also teeming with sea life rarely seen in such variety anywhere else on the planet. Of course, Creole cooking is great, but the culinary diversity of the area is greater.

But how best to experience these diverse, delectable experiences first hand? Why, on a cruise of course. With that in mind, here are 10 must visit ports for your next luxury Caribbean cruise.

Havana, Cuba

Havana, ooh na na. Sorry, we couldn’t help it. The Caribbean’s most famous city is the perfect combination of beautiful beaches, cobbled streets and underrated food. With its 1950s American cars and peeling Spanish-style buildings, it’s like being in a particularly hazy, extremely trendy Instagram shoot for your entire stay.

Old Havana is a UNESCO-protected site, with 500 year old plazas, churches and winding streets just waiting to be explored. A must on any itinerary for luxury cruises.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

The capital of the U.S Virgin Isles, the first thing that strikes you about Charlotte Amalie is the architecture, which blends its Danish colonial past with palm trees and flourishes of sunkissed colour so beloved of the region.

It’s a great place for a party; the city was formerly called ‘Taphus’ meaning ‘beer hall’, and the harbour used to be a favourite of some of the most enthusiastic drinkers in history, Blackbeard and Bluebeard. Tours of the town replete with pirate folklore are available to visitors, along with a stop off at a few watering holes along the way!

King’s Wharf, Bermuda

King’s Wharf is a popular port of call as the Royal Naval Dockyard is an expansive, six acre site and is able to receive a huge volume of tourists disembarking from the boats. In the port you’ll find the National Museum of Bermuda, an intriguing exploration of the history of the island, as well as a ferry dock which connects you to the capital of Bermuda, Hamilton City, as well as the UNESCO World Heritage Site, St. Georges. Plenty of options, then, for those wanting to get out there and explore.

Falmouth, Jamaica

Historic Falmouth is a key stop off on any Caribbean cruise tour, as it offers unique history, an interesting array of churches and Georgian architecture. The port area is recently renovated and a National Heritage site and now safeguarded by the World Monuments Fund, and is one of the most pristine places to spend some time in the whole Caribbean.

Falmouth is also the focal point of the country’s rum and sugar cane trade. While you’re here, it’d be rude not to take a rum distillery tour; the Hampden Estate is just half an hour from the port. And don’t leave without sampling the perfect amalgamation of the town’s most famous exports; the rum cake.

Montego Bay, Jamaica

Well, we couldn’t only go to just one place in Jamrock, now could we? Montego Bay is another major cruise ship port with loads to offer the intrepid (or even trepid) traveller. Referred to as the ‘Second City’, MoBay, as the locals call it, is crucial to the country’s economy, owing to the huge number of tourists it receives. As such, there’s some excellent duty free shopping options including City Centre shopping plaza and the Holiday Village Shopping centre.

If you’ve got time, then a couple of hours’ drive east, you’ll find the popular resort of Ocho Rios, which boats spectacular beaches and plenty of adventure sports.

Cozumel, Mexico

The island of Cozumel is Mexico’s gem in the Caribbean Sea; a peaceful island with some of the best scuba diving on the planet and Mayan ruins, specifically the San Gervasio Mayan Archaeological Site, offering historical intrigue. Sure, it gets busy, receiving five million visitors a year, but that’s testament to the quality of the activities on offer on the island.

Aside from the world class diving and heritage sites, the Punta Sur Ecological Park (which includes the island’s best beach) covers 2500 acres and contains a rich ecosystem, including crocodiles in the marshland, sea turtles close to the shore and exotic plants native to Cozumel. Don’t forget your camera!

Cozumel’s incredible sights and sparkling sea make it a favourite port for luxury cruises. Explora Cruises, for instance, includes a day trip to Cozumel in several of its cruise packages, allowing visitors to explore the best of what the island has to offer. Visitors can kayak through the mangroves of Cozumel, enjoy its hiking trails, and, of course, dive into its kaleidoscopic waters before sitting back and enjoying some Mezcalitos to wrap up their day.

Bridgetown, Barbados

Tucked away from the main hurricane belt in the southeastern most point of the lesser Antilles, Barbados is known across the globe for its pink-tinged beaches, luscious gardens, vibrant culinary scene and friendly locals.

Bridgetown, the capital, features a UNESCO World Heritage site, named Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison. Here you can learn the history of one of the Caribbean’s earliest established towns, and take in some of the fascinating colonial architecture. Close by is Harrison’s Cave, a natural limestone cavern which features streams, pools, stalagmites and stalactites – a wonderful way for adventure-seekers to spend a couple of hours before you get back on the boat.

Belize City, Belize

Though not a port as such (your cruise ship will drop anchor a couple of miles from shore and speedboats will ferry you into Belize City’s Fort Street Tourism Village), the chance for scuba diving and snorkelling in Belize Barrier Reef, the world’s second largest coral reef, is just too good to miss. A water taxi from the city to the famous (and frightening) Shark Alley Reef should only take about an hour and fifteen minutes. It’s not only about swimming with sharks though, the Southern stingray is an even bigger draw to scuba and snorkelling enthusiasts.

Basseterre, St. Kitts & Nevis

The capital of St. Kitts and Nevis, Basseterre, is a port of call with a difference; it’s compact, pretty and seemingly not as dwarfed by the cruise ships as some others in the region are. There’s a ramshackle, uncommercial charm to the place. With a population of just 14000, it’s a city with carries cultural capital much belying its size. The Saint Kitts Music Festival has previously hosted huge global acts John Legend and Lionel Richie, amongst many others, and several 2007 World Cricket Cup matches, too.

Virgin Gorda, The British Virgin Isles

If you’re a Virgin Gorda virgin, then fear not, you’re very much in company. However this pocket of paradise is predicted to be one of the hottest holiday destinations in the coming years, with china white sands and ecological intrigue for as far as the eye can see.

It’s home to some wonderful natural attractions, including The Baths, which is actually a boulder-strewn beach, undoubtedly the best-known landmark in Virgin Gorda, and arguably one of the most impressive land features in the entire Virgin archipelago. They’re situated on the north shore of the island and consist of enormous granite boulders (some nearly 50 feet) leaning precariously against each other.

This dramatic formation creates a seaside labyrinth, forming many sheltered sea pools along the beach that are ideal for swimming, snorkeling and exploring. Owing to its popularity with the cruise crowd, those keen for a quiter experience usually come early in the morning to avoid the crowds. If the hordes later on get too much for you, a quick walk down a well trodden path will take you to quieter beaches such as Spring Bay to offer some relief.

Protecting Yourself From Digital Pickpocketing: What You Need To Know About RFID

We’ve all heard the horror stories. In fact, we’ve all pondered their possibility whilst travelling on a particularly busy tube or packed out bus. That is, a would-be pickpocket might be moments away from taking a dinky little portable card machine, placing it somewhere near our back pocket, and draining our Monzo account of all its £8 and 99p before we alight at Cockfosters.

Where once you might expect someone to slip their hand in your pocket or, at least, distract you with a comically massive outstretched map, nowadays theft is a much more sophisticated affair. One such method is through so-called skimming – a type of electronic pickpocketing that can happen without you even realising which has grown in prominence as the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) becomes more mainstream.

Understanding RFID Technology

RFID technology is widely used for tracking and identification purposes in various sectors, from retail inventory systems to pet and passport chips. However, it’s also commonly found in credit cards and debit cards as a way to facilitate contactless payments. This feature allows users to tap their card on a POS terminal to make a payment, facilitating the transaction.

However, this convenience comes at a cost. RFID-enabled cards can transmit your financial details wirelessly over short distances. Typically, RFID signals can be picked up from several feet away with the right equipment – equipment that is increasingly easy for thieves to obtain and operate.

The Risk Of RFID Skimming

The primary risk associated with RFID technology in consumer products, like credit and debit cards, is unauthorised skimming. Skimmers equipped with RFID readers can stealthily scan wallets and purses from a distance, capturing data from RFID-enabled cards. The thief can then replicate your card details onto another card or use them for online purchases, all without the original card ever leaving your possession.

How To Protect Yourself From RFID

Thankfully, there are several effective steps you can take to protect yourself from RFID skimming:

Use Secure Wallet Solutions

Invest in a specifically designed anti-RFID wallet or cardholder that blocks RFID signals. Here are some key features to look for:

  • Material: Ensure the wallet is made from materials like aluminium (you could alternatively just wrap your wallet in aluminium foil!), carbon fibre, or specially designed RFID-blocking fabrics that can effectively block RFID signals.
  • Design: Choose a wallet that fully encloses your cards. Some wallets have open slots that may not provide complete protection.
  • Capacity: Select a wallet that fits your needs in terms of the number of cards and other items you carry. Overstuffed wallets can sometimes compromise the effectiveness of RFID blocking.
  • Brand Reputation: Opt for reputable brands like Secrid, Ridge, or Ekster, which are known for their quality and effectiveness in RFID protection.

Use RFID Blocking Sleeves

If you prefer to keep your current wallet, consider using RFID blocking sleeves for individual cards. These sleeves are typically made from materials that block RFID signals and can be a cost-effective solution.

  • Ease of Use: Ensure the sleeves are easy to insert and remove from your wallet.
  • Durability: Look for sleeves that are durable and won’t wear out quickly with regular use.

Be Conscious of Your Surroundings

While RFID skimming can happen without physical contact, being aware of your environment can still help mitigate risks:

  • Crowded Areas: Be extra vigilant in crowded places like markets, public transportation, or festivals where skimmers can operate more freely.
  • Proximity Awareness: Be cautious of people standing unusually close to you, especially if they are holding devices that could potentially be RFID readers.

Disable RFID Functionality

Some cards allow you to disable the RFID functionality. Contact your card issuer to see if this is an option for your cards. Alternatively, you can request non-RFID enabled cards if you don’t frequently use contactless payments.

Use RFID Blocking Cards

RFID blocking cards are another effective solution. These cards emit a scrambling signal that prevents RFID readers from accessing your card information.

  • Placement: Place the blocking card next to your RFID-enabled cards in your wallet for optimal protection.
  • Effectiveness: Ensure the blocking card is from a reputable manufacturer and has been tested for effectiveness – many debate whether they’re actually necessary.

Regularly Update Your Cards

Technology evolves, and so do security measures. Regularly updating your cards can ensure you benefit from the latest security features.

  • Newer Cards: Newer cards often come with enhanced security features, including better encryption and more secure RFID technology.
  • Bank Policies: Stay informed about your bank’s policies and updates regarding card security.

Secure Online Usage

While this tip is more general, it’s still crucial in the context of protecting your financial information:

  • VPNs: Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) when accessing the internet on public Wi-Fi to encrypt your data.
  • Secure Websites: Ensure the websites you use for transactions are secure (look for “https” in the URL).

Read: 10 essential cyber security tips for travellers

Monitor Your Financial Accounts

Regularly monitoring your bank statements and transaction history can help you quickly identify and address any unauthorised activity.

  • Bank Alerts: Set up alerts for transactions over a certain amount or for any online purchases.
  • Mobile Apps: Use your bank’s mobile app to frequently check your account activity and report any suspicious transactions immediately.

Use A Faraday Cage

A Faraday cage is an enclosure used to block electromagnetic fields. You can purchase small Faraday pouches or bags designed to hold your wallet or individual cards.

  • Effectiveness: These pouches are highly effective at blocking all types of RFID signals.
  • Portability: They are portable and can be easily carried in your bag or pocket.

By implementing these detailed and specific measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to RFID skimming and protect your financial information more effectively.

The Bottom Line

While the conveniences of modern technology can offer numerous benefits, they can also bring new challenges in terms of security – particularly financial security against digital theft like RFID skimming. By understanding these risks and taking proactive measures, you can protect yourself from becoming a victim of digital theft.

It is essential to stay informed about the latest advancements in digital safety technologies and keep adapting our security measures accordingly. Remember, prevention is always better than cure when it comes to safeguarding your personal information against potential digital threats.

*The efficacy of RFID blocking technology is strongly contested. While many products claim to offer protection against RFID skimming, the actual effectiveness can vary. It is important to conduct your own research and consider multiple security measures to protect your financial information.*

Bangkok Day Trips: 7 Beaches Less Than A 3 Hour Drive From The Thai Capital

We love Bangkok. We love the cut and thrust, the to and fro, the hustle and bustle of one of the world’s most exhilarating cities. We love how it’s always on, there’s always something going on, and it’s almost impossible to get bored here. “When you’re tired of Bangkok, you’re tired of life”, as someone so sagely once said.

But sometimes, you do get tired of gallivanting around, of taking a two hour journey in search of Bangkok’s best phad Thai or bouncing from shopping mall to shopping mall hoping for a spark. When that feeling hits, rest assured there are some fantastic getaways only a couple of hours away that promise sand, serenity and Singha.

With that in mind, here are 7 must-visit beaches where you can unwind and experience the natural beauty of Thailand only a couple of hours from Bangkok.

Hua Hin Beach

Distance/Time from Bangkok: Approximately 3 hours by car.

Hua Hin, a renowned retreat for the Thai Royal Family, is about a three-hour drive from Bangkok. This beach is celebrated for its excellent tourist infrastructure, making it a top choice for families. The pristine sand and clear waters, coupled with a range of activities such as water sports and pony rides, cater to visitors of all ages. An excursion to Khao Takiab, a temple with a towering golden Buddha statue, enhances the experience, providing a blend of relaxation and cultural exploration.

Our Favourite Restaurant in Hua Hin: Chao Lay Seafood – Situated on a pier overlooking the sea, Chao Lay Seafood offers a fantastic selection of fresh seafood dishes. The steamed crab and fried fish with garlic are highly recommended, but best of all is the stirfied squid with salted duck egg yolk; just superb. There is plenty of outdoor seating overlooking the sea.

Or do as the Thais do an enjoy oysters on the beach which in our humble opinion, is one of the best ways to enjoy oysters. Thai style beach oysters involves shucked oysters, piled high and enjoyed raw with a nahm jim seafood and crispy shallots. A few grains from sandy hands isn’t compulsory, but inevitable.

Our Favourite Resort in Hua Hin: Thailand has long been celebrated for its holistic approach to health and wellness, integrating ancient healing traditions with modern luxury. Among the most renowned wellness retreats in Thailand is Chiva-Som, a sanctuary located in Hua Hin that’s been doing its thing with subtle sophistication for three decades.

Insider’s Top Tip: For a unique experience, visit the Hua Hin Railway Station, one of Thailand’s oldest and most beautiful train stations. It’s a great spot for photos and a glimpse into the town’s history. Don’t miss the colourful town, either, which is laid back and local in flavour.

Cha-Am Beach

Distance/Time from Bangkok: Approximately 2 hours by car, slightly longer with direct car hire from Bangkok airport.

Twinned with Hua Hin and just 20 minutes up the road, Cha-Am Beach is known for its tranquil atmosphere, a haven for those seeking peace and relaxation. The beach is less crowded than Hua Hin, allowing for uninterrupted sunbathing and swimming.

A notable attraction is the Mrigadayavan Palace, the summer residence of King Vajiravudh, which adds a historical dimension to your beach outing. This charming town offers affordable accommodation and delicious local fare, making it a delightful escape.

Our Favourite Restaurant in Cha-Am: Krua Garn Wela – Just north of the main stretch of sand in Cha-Am’s fishing village, Krua Garn Wela’s seafood dishes do the catch justice, with the tom yum here particularly invigorating, but when the produce is this fresh, you can’t really go wrong with just about anything on the menu. Be warned; the default is spicy here.

Our Favourite Resort in Cha-Am: SO Sofitel Hua Hin – This stylish 5 star resort offers a blend of modern design and luxurious comfort, with a beautiful beachfront location and excellent amenities.

Insider’s Top Tip: Rent a bicycle and explore the scenic bike paths along the beach. It’s a great way to see more of Cha-Am and enjoy the coastal views, and Hua Hin is also within reach on two wheels!

Bang Saen Beach

Distance/Time from Bangkok: Approximately 2 hours by car.

Located just two hours from Bangkok and an hour from Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bang Saen Beach is the closest beach to the city and a favourite among locals. This charming seaside destination offers a quieter alternative to the more tourist-heavy beaches. The soft sands and gentle waves create an ideal spot for sunbathing, swimming, and beachside picnics.

Our Favourite Restaurant in Bang Saen: Pagarang – The focal point for dining in Bang Saen and massively popular with the locals (always a good sign) Pagarang is known for its fresh seafood and assertively spiced Thai dishes. The terrace that juts out into the sea is the perfect place to dine whilst soaking up the sea breeze.

Our Favourite Resort in Bang Saen: The Tide Resort – This huge beachfront resort offers modern amenities, a relaxing spa, and a beautiful pool area. It’s perfect for a comfortable and convenient stay near the beach, and is large enough that privacy is all but guaranteed.

Insider’s Top Tip: Visit Bang Saen Beach on weekdays to avoid the weekend crowds. Also, check out the nearby Ang Sila village for its famous stone mortars and fresh seafood market.

Koh Samet

Distance/Time from Bangkok: Approximately 2.5 to 3 hours by car, followed by a 15-minute ferry ride.

A bit further, but well worth the extra travel time, Koh Samet is about a 2.5 to 3-hour drive from Bangkok, followed by a 15-minute ferry ride. This picturesque island is home to 16 beautiful beaches, each with its own unique flair, all with powdery white sand. Whether you prefer the lively atmosphere of Diamond Beach, with its water sports and live music, or the serene vibe of Laem Yai, Koh Samet has something for everyone. Despite being a popular destination, the beaches remain well-maintained and inviting.

Our Favourite Restaurant in Koh Samet: Koh Samet Food Market – Whilst the island’s beaches boast plenty of decent seafood restaurants complete with fire shows, the town’s central ‘streetfood’ market, on the main drag between the Nathon Pier and the beaches, does some genuinely delicious Thai food. Order the catfish laap; it’s a banger!

Our Favourite Resort in Koh Samet: Ao Prao Resort – This luxurious resort offers stunning beachfront views, private villas, and exceptional service, making it a perfect choice for a relaxing getaway.

Insider’s Top Tip: Ao Phrao Beach – aside from the resort – offers a quieter and more secluded experience. It’s one of the less crowded beaches on the island, perfect for a peaceful day by the sea.

Koh Larn

Distance/Time from Bangkok: Approximately 2 hours by car to Pattaya, followed by a short ferry ride.

Situated off the coast of Pattaya (which you’ll want to avoid – a thoroughly depressing place), Koh Larn, also known as Koh Lan or Coral Island, is another fantastic option for a quick beach escape. A short ferry ride from Pattaya brings you to this serene island, where you can enjoy crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral reefs. The island is perfect for snorkelling, diving, and a variety of other water-based activities.

Our Favourite Restaurant in Koh Larn: Chalianglom – With dining on a pebble beach (no danger of getting sand in your food!) that encourages the sea to lap at your feet in the evening, Chalianglom is a decent option for dinner in Koh Larn. To be totally honest, we’ve never had a truly great meal on the island, but Chalianglom does a decent som tam and fried chicken combo.

© RealisticFilm from Getty Images via Canva

Our Favourite Resort in Koh Larn: SIRAVA – This stylish resort with its distinctive terracotta colour scheme offers a blend of comfort and convenience, with cosy bungalows nestled amidst lush greenery, many of which have their own private pool (not much bigger than a bathtub, admittedly). The resort – just a year old and therefore brand new and beautiful – boasts a relaxing spa, and a restaurant serving delicious local and international cuisine.

Insider’s Top Tip: Rent a motorbike to explore the island at your own pace. It’s an affordable and fun way to visit the different beaches and viewpoints on Koh Larn.

Pranburi Beach

Distance/Time from Bangkok: Approximately 3.5 hours by car.

Pranburi Beach, located about half an hour further south of Hua Hin, offers a more secluded and authentic Thai beach experience. This beach – a proper, white sandy one – is not as frequented by tourists as the others on our list, making it a hidden gem for those looking to escape the crowds.

The gentle waves are perfect for swimming, and the surrounding Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park provides stunning scenery and lush greenery. Local vendors offer delicious Thai cuisine, adding to the charm of this lesser-known paradise.

©Fokke Baarssen via Canva

Our Favourite Restaurant in Pranburi: Very Good Restaurant – True to its name, Very Good Restaurant serves up excellent Thai dishes with a focus on fresh seafood. The green curry and steamed fish with lime and garlic are standout dishes.

Our Favourite Resort in Pranburi: Aleenta Hua Hin – Pranburi Resort & Spa – This boutique resort offers luxurious villas, a serene atmosphere, and stunning ocean views, making it a perfect retreat for relaxation.

Insider’s Top Tip: Visit the Pranburi Forest Park for a peaceful walk through the mangroves. The park features a scenic boardwalk and is a great spot for bird watching and enjoying nature.

Koh Si Chang

Distance/Time from Bangkok: Approximately 2 hours by car to Si Racha, followed by a quick ferry ride.

The nearest island to Bangkok, Koh Si Chang, or Sichang, lies a short distance off the coast and is accessible via a quick ferry ride from Si Racha (where the famous sauce originates). This island offers a more local and authentic atmosphere, free from the typical tourist trappings. The island’s beaches are perfect for relaxation and exploration, with several historical sites and temples adding a cultural element to your visit. It’s an ideal destination for a day trip, offering scenic beauty and tranquillity.

The wooden pavilions on Koh Si Chang are famous. These charming structures offer serene spots for relaxation and reflection, providing visitors with stunning views of the turquoise waters and lush surroundings.

Our Favourite Restaurant in Koh Si Chang: Pan & David Restaurant – This charming restaurant offers a mix of Thai and Western dishes, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. The salt-crusted grilled fish with nahm jim seafood is particularly delicious.

Our Favourite Resort in Koh Si Chang: Somewhere Koh Sichang – This charming resort offers affordable nightly prices, a relaxing communal pool area, and easy access to the island’s attractions.

Why Probiotics Could Be An Important Part Of A Healthy Lifestyle

In recent years, scientific understanding of the power of probiotics has increased. A broad range of research has been carried out regarding the health benefits of probiotic foods and supplements, particularly in relation to their effect on gastrointestinal health, but also in terms of mood. The results have been exciting, though it should be stressed, studies are ongoing.

But what are probiotics, exactly? Well, probiotics are living microorganisms that are similar to the beneficial bacteria found naturally in our gut, and, it’s claimed, can be used to aid digestion and protect against disease-causing bacteria. Although probiotics have only recently become widely recognized by the public for their many health benefits, they’ve actually been around for thousands of years, in fermented food products like kimchi, yoghurt, sauerkraut, miso and many more items.

All delicious stuff, no doubt. But if you’re wondering why probiotics could be an important part of a healthy lifestyle, and not just a delicious addition to your dinner, then you’ve come to the right place.

THEY MAY HELP BALANCE THE FRIENDLY BACTERIA IN YOUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

The human digestive system contains both good and bad bacteria. Research shows that beneficial bacteria, like those found in probiotics, can help keep the bad bacteria in check so your body can function properly.

However, when you take antibiotics or consume foods that contain preservatives or artificial ingredients, it can kill all of the beneficial bacteria in your gut. This upsets the balance in your digestive system and causes issues, including pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, skin problems, and other health conditions.

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that exist naturally in foods like yoghurt and kimchi, and most people agree that the best way to ingest and benefit from these probiotics is through the food that we eat. However, they’re also available in both pill and powder form, and can help your gut bacteria remain replete and healthy, which, in turn, may have the potential to help you better manage stress.

When you eat fermented foods or take probiotic supplements on a regular basis (they’re often sold as capsules or liquids), it can help restore the beneficial bacteria in your gut so your body can return to its natural state of equilibrium. Taking probiotics after a course of antibiotics could be especially important because they may prevent antibiotic-associated diarrhoea and other issues caused by the loss of healthy gut bacteria.

THEY COULD HELP YOU DIGEST YOUR FOOD BETTER

Eating plenty of probiotic foods or taking a daily supplement with your meal can help improve digestion and may even help strengthen your immune system, too.

According to Harvard Health, taking probiotics may even aid constipation, as well as helping with inflammatory bowel disease, which can be hard to treat with conventional medicine and complex surgery. Again, it should be emphasised that studies are ongoing.

Some also believe that when regular probiotics are taken along with a digestive enzyme, it could help better break down the food in your stomach. Of course, you should always talk to your GP or a qualified nutritionist before adding any new supplements to your diet.

PROBIOTICS MIGHT HELP PREVENT AND TREAT DIARRHOEA

Diarrhoea can be caused by a number of different issues. Symptoms include loose stool, nausea, cramping, bloating, and more. Although scientists aren’t exactly sure why probiotics can help with diarrhea, some research suggests that they could reduce the movement of bacteria and yeast through your digestive system, which slows down bowel movements.

Probiotics may also help restore the balance of good and bad bacteria in your body after you’ve taken antibiotics or consumed something that upsets your gut, like processed foods or artificial sweeteners. Although probiotics can’t stop diarrhoea that’s caused by other issues, they can improve your intestinal health to prevent future instances of diarrhoea.

THEY MIGHT EVEN IMPROVE YOUR MOOD AND REDUCE STRESS LEVELS

A study shown on BBC program ‘The Truth About Improving Your Mental Health’ recently revealed the role probiotics play in keeping the ‘second mind’ healthy, with participants who took probiotic supplements seeing a 50% improvement in their mood compared to a placebo

The connection between the gut and the brain is a two-way street. In fact, some scientists believe that the cells lining the walls of your intestines are similar to the brain cells found in your head. This is why stress and other mood-altering events can cause issues in your digestive system. In fact, studies have shown that the gut produces 90% of the body’s serotonin, a key hormone responsible for stabilising mood. Another reason to take good care of it, don’t you think?

PROBIOTIC SUPPLEMENTS & THEIR POTENTIAL EFFECT ON STRESS

Fermented foods high in probiotics and healthy gut bacteria may also help relieve stress; no wonder they call your gut the ‘second mind’! Again, supplements are available should you not relish the rich, complex tang of such foods.

Researchers have found that certain strains might reduce stress and anxiety by reducing inflammation in your body. In one study, the effects of probiotic supplements on healthy adults were compared to a placebo. The results found that those who took probiotics experienced less anxiety and lowered cortisol levels (a hormone linked to stress).

IT MAY REDUCE THE SEVERITY OF CERTAIN ALLERGIES AND ECZEMA

According to some experts, the cause of certain allergies and eczema is an overload of bad bacteria in your stomach. Probiotics allow for good microbes to grow, which could reduce the severity of certain types of skin conditions like eczema and itchy rashes.

THE POTENTIAL FOR REDUCING SYMPTOMS OF CERTAIN DIGESTIVE DISORDERS

Bad microbes actually thrive off of certain types of food that you eat. They cause gas, bloating, and indigestion when too much of this material is allowed to accumulate in your stomach. Probiotics help to flush out these bad microbes by potentially allowing for good bacteria to grow throughout your digestive system.

This could help sufferers with common symptoms like constipation, diarrhoea, and acid reflux.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Scientific consensus is growing; in order to have a healthy lifestyle, it might be wise to include probiotics in your diet.
