HIBERNATION SEASON: 5 TV WATCHING TIPS YOU NEVER KNEW YOU NEEDED

Huddle in and hunker down, hibernation season is upon us. As the days get colder and the nights draw in, there’s nothing better than finding a good series to devote your evenings (and even a few of your days) to. Preferably, we should add, cosied up under your favourite blanket, an open fire – or simply, a candle – lit, and a mug of something warming sat in front of you.

Indeed, as the seasons change, so too do our viewing habits. According to research by the Broadcaster’s Audience Research Board (BARB), the UK’s daily screen time correlates closely with the average hours of daily sunshine and average temperatures. Autumn sees the average Brit watching 245 minutes of TV a day, whilst in winter, it’s 264 minutes, comfortably the most prolific season for TV. In summer, that figure drops to ‘just’ 227 minutes, and in spring, it rises slightly to 237.

Fascinating stuff, indeed, but not in the least bit surprising. If you’re getting ready to bring those average viewing figures up this autumn and winter, then why not optimise your viewing experience with these 5 TV watching tips you never knew you needed this hibernation season.

DELVE INTO THE BRITISH ARCHIVES

First things first, you need something to watch. If there is one thing we can be proud of in the UK, it’s our TV shows. A huge variety of UK programmes have made it onto the world stage, from period dramas and comedies to game shows and reality series.

The UK is one of the world’s most successful TV industries, according to statistics from Betway Casino. According to the figures published, the country’s TV industry generated £1.48 billion ($2.10 billion) in sales last year alone.

We’re here to take a closer look at these huge numbers, establishing exactly what shows can take credit for such success, and perhaps steering you in the direction of some great homegrown shows if you’re stuck for inspiration on what to watch next.

Sitcoms and dramas make up some of the most well-known UK programs, many of which have been translated into foreign versions. Our favourites include:

  • The Office
  • Chernobyl
  • Misfits
  • Doctor Who

Many of these shows have been very popular both on broadcast television and on streaming services. However, it’s not always sunshine and rainbows. The Inbetweeners and Skins came to the United States, but they didn’t have nearly as much success as their UK counterparts! We guess the niche humour didn’t quite cut through across the pond. This might be due to scripts not changing and failing to connect with audiences.

Despite the fact that scripted drama is still the biggest revenue source for UK TV exports, unscripted shows from the UK are incredibly influential, too. In reality, the United Kingdom is by far the largest source of global export sales for unscripted formats, making up 42% of total sales in 2020.

Unscripted shows include anything from reality dating series to talent competitions. International markets have purchased the following unscripted show formats:

  • Love Island
  • Britain’s Got Talent
  • Strictly Come Dancing
  • Planet Earth
  • Great British Bake Off

What we’re trying to say is, although it’s always tempting to stay up to date with latest ‘must watch’ TV series, this hibernation season, why not delve back into the archives and enjoy some British classics. Because let’s be honest, right now, our arts scene is one of the better parts of the UK.

BINGE WATCH RESPONSIBLY

In a world of Netflix and Disney+, Amazon prime and Apple TV+, binge watching has become part of our everyday. Amazingly, it wasn’t so long ago that this was a completely unheard of concept; only in 2015 was ‘Binge-Watch’ declared word of the year by Collins

We’ve all suffered from “one more episode” syndrome, with Squid Game being devoured in a single sitting or all five seasons of The Wire taking just a week to complete. But with the word ‘binge’ suggesting something unhealthy, we’re wondering if this is necessarily a bad thing?

There’s no doubt that binge watching is a stress reliever. Throughout the pandemic, this humble pastime offered us a chance to escape from the real world, and actually, that’s true whether we’re in the midst of a pandemic or not.

Interestingly, NBC News points to some other benefits of binge watching, including helping us to foster relationships with others who have been watching the same show, which in turn can help us feel part of a community.

And if you’ve ever wondered what happens to our brains when you binge watch a TV series, Dr. Renee Carr, Psy.D, a clinical psychologist, explains (via NBC News) that “When engaged in an activity that’s enjoyable such as binge watching, your brain produces dopamine.” As such, you experience a “drug-like high” when you binge watch as your brain is continually producing dopamine. Lovely stuff and much healthier than, you know, actual drugs.

However, what goes up must come down, and binge watching can have its downfalls too. After a program has ended, we can enter a state of situational depression. Also, as Washington Post reports, research points to a “link between binge-watching and poor lifestyle choices such as opting for unhealthy meals, unhealthy snacks and sedentary behaviors”.

That article goes on to single out Netflix, in particular, as being harmful to your sleep. Considering the Washington Post is owned by Jeff Bezos, who also owns Amazon Prime (a Netflix rival) we’re treating this one with a healthy dose of scepticism.

Anyway, according to Dr. Carr, there are ways you can mitigate the negative effects of binge watching. She recommends that “You can engage in healthy binge-watching by setting a predetermined end time for the binge. For example, commit to saying, ‘after three hours, I’m going to stop watching this show for the night’.”

SORT OUT YOUR SNACK GAME

Go on, admit it; when you’re dough balls deep into an episode of Bake Off, an insatiable urge for sweet treats takes over.

Or, perhaps you’ve been watching Snack Masters, the show where Fred Siriex tasks top chefs with recreating the nation’s favourite snacks, and you’ve suddenly come over all hot and bothered about Wagon Wheels.

It’s no secret that things like chocolate, crisps, biscuits and pastries are loaded with things that are bad for us. And sure, the occasional treat is absolutely fine; we all deserve an indulgence or two, after all.

But the convenience of a chocolate bar or packet of crisps lies in their convenience; they require absolutely no preparation or clean-up. They’re easy, and that’s why their habitual consumption can be so tricky to shake. If you want to introduce healthier snacks to your TV watching routine, you’re going to need to be proactive.

Stock your cupboard up for hibernation season and prepare some healthy snacks so it’s ready to go when you get snacky. Make sure that you have plenty of fruit around so there’s no excuse for skipping your five a day. If that’s not convenient, think about picking up some packets of dried fruits and nuts for satisfying that “just need a nibble on something” moment – dried banana chips, goji berries and salted cashews (just a handful) is about as satisfying a snack as you can get, by the way.

WORKOUT WHILE YOU WATCH

Hey, this period of hibernation doesn’t have to be spent in a sedentary fashion. Instead, why not take the opportunity to catch up on your favourite shows and your fitness by working out while you watch?

We all do it when we’re at the gym, after all, with our eyes glued to those mini screens, our attention diverted from the buildup of lactic acid in our calves. Translate this energy into the home setting by investing in a home exercise bike, domestic treadmill or set of weights, and mix the business of getting buff with the pleasure of watching some great television.

THE RIGHT LIGHTING

Finally, let’s think about living room lighting. We mentioned hibernation season in the title, so it’s essential that your TV watching set up is bathed in a warm, cosy glow conducive to relaxation. Generally speaking, watching TV in pitch black is a mistake; it can cause eye strain, fatigue and headaches. And that’s before we consider the detrimental effects of blue light on your sleep.

On the flip side, watching TV with the overhead light on full blast feels, frankly, perverse. Doing so certainly won’t get you in that relaxed, snug frame of mind. Instead, opt for dim lights, preferably provided by a variety of lamps and candles (or even a dimmer switch) for maximum comfort and cosiness.

HOW TO BE A SMARTER SHOPPER

This year has been full of ups and downs, with little of the former and much of the latter, let’s be honest. With the ongoing pandemic and the threat of lockdowns ever present, it has definitely been unique in myriad, unexpected ways. Unfortunately, such uncertainty has led to people across the world having to reassess how they spend their money as income streams become inconsistent and job security waver.

As the final quarter of 2021 begins, BravoVoucher has released a study titled the Smart Shopper Index 2021, analysing the spending habits from 25 OECD countries to find out which country came out on top when it comes to handling their money in a smart way.

But wait, just what is a smart shopper, we hear you ask?

According to the Association of Common Research, smart shopping is defined as a “tendency for consumers to invest considerable time and effort in seeking and utilizing promotion-related information to achieve price savings”.

Anyway, the total score of each country in the Smart Shopper 2021 index was given based on their performance in household savings, household debt, purchase consideration, overall spending relative to cost of living, and food spending relative to cost. So, how did they do?

Well, France came in at the top with 421 points. Although their household debt percentage (119%) is slightly higher than the average, they seem to have the highest percentage overall when it comes to making considered purchases (93%).

Ireland ranked second with 312 points. And third were the Germans with 288 points and a significantly lower percentage of household debt (95%) than France and Ireland, which definitely impacts their overall score. They also have a higher percentage of household savings (11%) than the top two countries.

The United States of America just missed out on a top-three spot, coming in fourth with an overall score of 284. Although they have a high percentage of household debt (107%) and have an average score when it comes to purchase consideration (78%), the reason they are able to score high is because of their ability to save up and consider spending vs. costs.

The fifth spot goes to Norway with 211 points on the Smart Shopper Index. Out of the 25 countries researched, Norway had the highest scores on the cost of living index (70) and the food prices index (100) outlined in the study. With this in mind, it’s quite easy to see why the Norwegians try to engage in smart purchasing habits. That said, and although they spend a lot of money overall, the Norwegians also seem to get the most value from their cost of living.

Unfortunately, us Brits did dismally, coming 20th with a negative score of -227. As Bravo Voucher explains “Brits love a bargain, but they love to spend more. On average, Brits spend almost as much as they earn, saving just 1% of their disposable income and spending the rest”.

They continue, ”It doesn’t come as a shock to find they score poorly on overall spending habits, except when it comes to food. It seems the Brits know how to get the best value out of their meals”.

Interesting stuff, indeed, and it’s certainly apparent that us Brits have a lot to learn when it comes to being conscious of how we spend and how to plan and budget our income. With all this in mind, here’s how to be a smarter shopper.

BE PATIENT AND WAIT

If you don’t need a particular item right now, then sit back and wait for a while, particularly if it’s a newly released product or the latest piece of tech. Most products will eventually come down in price even if you have to wait a few months.

If you can stay disciplined and have a very clear idea of the type of product you want to buy, then flash sales or time limited sale sites could be worth a try. Usually, this involves signing up to a website that then sends you alerts when products become available or the price drops.

LOOK FOR PROMOTIONS & DISCOUNTS

On Bravo Voucher’s Smart Spending index, one thing Brits did well at was looking for promotions on the food delivery app UberEats. We are also the most eager to find bargains in fashion and look harder for discounts on other ‘high street’ purchases. In fact, as the Mirror reported in 2019, Brits are prouder of bargains than they are of big buys, and are more likely to show off about money saving tricks than their spending power.

So, although it’s easy to ignore those daily emails and vouchers as junk, and commit them to the spam folder or shove that physical discount voucher to the bottom of your bag along with your receipt, if you take more care with promotions, you’ll see that there are great savings to be had.

SHOP AROUND

It’s no secret that there’s a clear difference between the likes of Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose when compared with Aldi and Lidl in terms of price. It’s imperative, then, that you shop around and compare prices to get the best results.

The website Trolley is amazing for helping you do just that. Simply enter a product name or brand and the platform will show you a price comparison across all local supermarkets, as well as a detailed price fluctuation history and the chance to sign up for price alerts on any product from your usual supermarket shop.

PRUDENT MEAL PREP

Being prepared when it comes to grocery shopping and planning lunches for the week can help save your cash, too. Even making a shopping list before you head to the supermarket could lead to savings. In fact, 60% of people who take a shopping list to the supermarket said it saves them money, according to the Money Advice Service. This is largely because it prevents those impulse purchases which afflict us all when doing our groceries on an empty stomach.

You should also endeavour to plan your meals carefully for the week, so when you go to the shops, you’re only buying what you need. Check out these 5 IDEAL strategies for meal planning for more on that.

Other things you can do to be a smart shopper include:

  • Shop at factory shops and outlet stores: Set your sights on stores like TK Maxx and Homesense for major savings.
  • Buy travel tickets in advance: If you need to book a long train journey, try to book a few months beforehand. TheTrainline.com claims it can save you up to 43% on fares nationwide, if booked up to 12 weeks early.
  • Buy End-of-Season Clothes: A markdown on clothing prices can always be found at the end of the season? That new winter coat you need for next year could cost half the price if you buy it in the summer sales.

THE BOTTOM LINE

So there you have it, our top tips on becoming a smarter shopper today. Now, can we get the UK to number 1 on next year’s Smart Shopper Index.

BRIGHTON FOR BEGINNERS: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR YOUR FIRST VACATION

It’s been voted as the Happiest City in the UK, and is known as London-by-the-Sea for its cosmopolitan yet coastal vibe. Yet for first time visitors to Brighton, it can be all too easy to remain within the narrow confines of the Lanes and Pier, rarely venturing further east into quirky Kemptown or west to explore hip and happening Hove.

We’re exploring Brighton as comprehensively as these pages can handle today, helping your first trip to this fantastic city be as colourful and endlessly curious as the place itself. Here’s everything beginners need to know for their first Brighton vacation.

HOW TO GET TO BRIGHTON

The closest airport to Brighton is Gatwick Airport (LGW), the UK’s second largest and one which welcomes arrivals from all over the world. The airport has its own railway station, with regular trains to Brighton Station taking just half an hour. Talk about convenience!

With Brighton just under 50 miles from London, if you’re not flying into Gatwick you’ll likely pass through the capital on your way to its sibling by the sea. Once you’re in London, you can get to Brighton via one of the following ways:

  • Catch the Gatwick express from London Victoria to Brighton. You can also catch the ThamesLink from Kings Cross and London Bridge. The journey shouldn’t take you more than an hour. A standard single journey will set you back around £20.
  • The National Express operates a route between London Victoria Coach Station and Brighton Coach Station. Be warned, this will take significantly longer than trains, with the travel time being just under three hours. That said, the cost of a ticket is cheaper, too; expect to pay £10 or so.
  • If you have your own car or can rent one, you can drive to Brighton in around two hours from Central London. However, be aware that if you do choose to drive, parking in the city is notoriously difficult and prohibitively expensive; the city has an environmentally conscious soul, so public transport is highly encouraged.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GO TO BRIGHTON?

Brighton comes alive in the sunnier summer months with sunseekers and day trippers converging on the pebbles, bars, beachside eateries and renowned gig venues.

From October to March, the city becomes noticeably quieter. During this time, many of the seafront bars shut up shop, and during the winter, it can get pretty biting and windy close to the shore. That said, if you prefer to avoid the crowds and you find something strangely stirring about the British coast during the colder months, then the off season could be for you.

One of the busiest but arguably the best times to visit is during Brighton Pride. Brighton is often declared to be the world’s LGBTQ+ capital, and this is partly due to the huge, 160’000 strong Pride festival (over half the city’s entire population) which happens each year in August, bringing 2% of Brighton’s annual visitors in a single day. We should note that for the previous two years, the official event has been cancelled due to COVID-19 related safety concerns, though smaller, informal celebrations did still occur.

Indeed, it’s a city that prides itself on openness and acceptance all year round, and has the highest percentage of same-sex households in the country, as well as a hip and happening collection of gay bars and clubs centred around St. James’ Street in Kemptown and on towards the beach.

If you can’t wait until the summer to visit this lovely place, then consider a trip down in February, when the month is dedicated to LGBTQ+ with art, film showings, discussions and tours centering around influential figures in the LGBTQ+ community.

WHERE TO STAY IN BRIGHTON

Brighton is blessed with a wide variety of choice in terms of accommodation, but it’s wise to approach that level of choice with caution; some of the ‘budget’ hotels do tend to be a bit rough around the edges.

Depending on how much spending money you have at your disposal, The Grand Brighton is arguably the city’s most iconic hotel, and is set right on the seafront. If you choose to stay here, make sure you take The Grand’s ‘Afternoon Tea by The Sea’, which has been voted by the public as Brighton’s Best Afternoon Tea in the Brighton Restaurant Awards 2020 and is served in the hotel’s Victoria Terrace.

Alternatively, we’re big fans of the Selina Hotel Brighton, located on King’s Road (at the foot of Preston Street). Housed in a trendy green building opposite the i360 viewing tower, you can’t miss the hotel as it stands out from all the rows of regency cream buildings along the seafront.

Selina is part of the Selina Group and is billed as “a unique traveler’s hub, bringing together creative locals, digital nomads, and explorers from all over the world’’. The majority of the hotel group’s outposts are found in the USA and Latin America, and incidentally, on the first floor of the hotel you’ll find Tlaloc, one of the best Mexican restaurants in Brighton.  Starting in the city as a pop-up before taking residency in the hotel, the restaurant offers modern Mexican food using locally sourced ingredients. The hotel also has a co-working space with daily hot desk prices starting from £9.

Close by is Artist Residence, one of a group of chain hotels that have now spread across the UK but which began life in Brighton. The hotel is inspired by Brighton’s thriving art scene and each of the rooms is a blend of original artist murals. Opt for a seaview room with a balcony for maximum luxury!

Other hotels worth checking out include Drakes in Kemptown, Sea Spray, Pelirocco, The Square Hotel, Nineteen and Hotel Una. The city is also home to two Travelodge, one just a pebble’s throw away from the seafront and another just behind the main train station.

THINGS TO DO IN BRIGHTON

If you ask us, a stroll along Brighton seafront, skimming pebbles with a tub of pickled cockles in one hand and a plastic pint of flat lager in the other, is perhaps the quintessential Brighton experience. However, this wouldn’t stand up as a travel guide if that was all we suggested.

From wandering around Brighton’s famous Lanes to visiting the Royal Pavilion, let us direct you to our article on 7 of the best things to do in Brighton

ALTERNATIVE THINGS TO DO IN BRIGHTON

If you, too, are already conversant in the standard Brighton day trip, and the itinerary above feels all too familiar, then fear not; Brighton and Hove still has so much to offer beyond the stereotypical day out at the seaside.

Perhaps our favourite thing to do in the summer is to rent a paddleboard or kayak and survey the city from the vantage point of the open seas (an incredibly popular pastime with local residents here). Every morning and evening, when the sea sits at its stillest, you’ll see people gliding through the water as it gently laps the pebble beach, and it’s a magical sight. The best times to paddleboard are at sunrise at sunset, with the sky and seascape at these times something else; serene, iridescently beautiful and perfect for a picture.

But that’s not all; from watersports on Hove Lagoon to fishing at Brighton Marina, all the way to taking a boat to see the city’s offshore wind farm, check out our article on 6 alternative things to do in Brighton and Hove.

WHERE TO EAT

The city has a diverse restaurant scene that feels like it’s getting better and better with each passing year.

Since you’re at the coast, it’s fish you should be eating. Some of the best seafood restaurants in Brighton include Riddle and Finns, the Urchin and the Salt Room. For something in the fine dining bracket, it has to be the Little Fish Market (booking well in advance is recommended), whilst for something truly humble, we just love the Brighton Smokehouse, which does the finest smoked mackerel sandwich on the planet.

Check out our guides to a whole host of other Brighton and Hove restaurants below:

WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM

This is a seaside city, after all, and it would be rude not to have an ice cream or two while you’re here. For those with a particularly discerning taste in the good stuff, Brighton is home to more than just your average Mr Whippy and has some of the best ice cream parlours and gelato shops in the UK.

So, which are the best? Well, Brass Monkey, tucked away in Brighton’s iconic North Laine Bazaar and with a second outpost in Hanningtons Lane, is up there – we would travel just the length of the country for their signature cardamom ice cream.

Or, Gelato Gusto’s original on Gardner Street, in the North Laines, has a reliably gorgeous artisan ice cream that comes in a huge variety of flavours. The shop uses local Sussex milk and cream, with recipes coming from the owner’s training in Bologna. Also worth mentioning is Boho Gelato, who offer the finest selection of vegan ice cream options in the city.

All that said, our favourite place is unquestionably Marrocco’s, which you’ll find just beyond Hove Lawns and right on the oceanfront, along the gorgeous Kingsway promenade. If any of their salted caramel, blueberry and ricotta, or cherry and almond ice creams are being served – order them. Trust us.

And with that, we’re off to indulge in a scoop. Shall we see you there?

HOW TO CELEBRATE GLOBAL CHAMPAGNE DAY IN STYLE

Put your bottles on ice. Polish your flutes. Practice your sabrage technique…Global Champagne Day is here, and we’ve got just the drink to celebrate it with.

This year, Global Champagne Day is being observed on 22nd October, which just happens to be a Friday and the perfect time to raise a glass, don’t you think?

If you’re looking to up your game until it bubbles over the top of the flute and spills all over your carpet, then with the help of Julien Lonneux of revered champagne makers Vranken Pommery, here are some top tips on buying and drinking Champagne to help you celebrate Global Champagne Day in style.

TERMINOLOGY & TASTE

First, consider your tastes: do you prefer dry or sweet wines?

Sugar is added to champagne during the fermentation process, and the amount used will alter the flavour,  so check the label and tasting notes. If you prefer a sweeter glass of fizz, then look for ‘doux’ or ‘demi-sec’ whereas ‘extra dry’, ‘brut’ and ‘brut nature’ indicate a drier, more complex flavour.

You’ll also want to consider the vintage. Non-vintage (which you’ll often see described as ‘NV’ on labels) contains wine blended from multiple grape harvests, whereas vintage champagne is made using the produce of a harvest from a single quality year. As a result, non-vintage tends to be cheaper, with many leading champagne houses stocking decent quality NV bottles at affordable prices.

GO LARGE

Throwing a party for Global Champagne Day? Julien suggests that you consider buying magnum, which not only look impressive, but arguably taste better, since the champagne matures better and for longer in the larger bottle.

A magnum is a double bottle; 150cl of champagne and you can get 12 flutes per magnum. Also, with more wine in the bottle and less empty space between the cork and the wine – there is less chance of oxidation happening, which can make the wine go off. Now, all you need to do is buy a bigger fridge to fit the damn things in.

THE RIGHT BOTTLE FOR YOU

It’s Global Champagne Day and a celebration is in order. Moët & Chandon, Lanson, and Veuve Clicquot are, of course, the champagnes of choice for connoisseurs, but the price tag can be somewhat off putting.

However, you can still indulge in champagne without having to spend quite so much. Some of our favourite more affordable tipples include Champagne Leon Launois Brut NV at just £21.95 and Veuve Monsigny Brut from Aldi (yes, you read that right) for just 12.99, which is an award-winning fizz from the “small, consistently excellent Champagne house Philizot & Fils”.

If you’re looking to splash a little more cash and enjoy something truly unique, then think outside the crate here and go for an English sparkling wine, which has been growing in stature in the last few years. Many blind tasters now believe it to be even better than champagne

Our favourite here at IDEAL? It’s got to be Hambledon Classic Cuvée for £30, which is a cracking English fizz if ever there was one. Alternatively, Louis Pommery England (made in Hampshire) is the first English sparkling wine to be released from a Champagne House, guaranteeing a top quality product, and has won several awards.

Julien advises that you shouldn’t always think that rosé champagnes are sweet. For example, mery Brut Rosé has a beautiful pale pink colour, but don’t be fooled into thinking this is a sweet wine. Ripe succulent red fruits on the nose give the impression of sweetness but this wine is much more balanced.

WELL ROUNDED FOR FOOD

Julien explains that if you want to serve champagne to drink with a meal, it’s important to choose one that is well rounded and that goes with everything you are serving.

Heidsieck Monopole Blue Top is his choice for the ideal Champagne to serve with food, as it goes brilliantly with white meat and seafood. Many online sites offer discounts when buying Monopole by the case – take advantage of these prices.

THE PERFECT CHILL

When it comes to drinking champagne, it’s recommended that you should serve yours chilled to between 8° and 10°. This allows the drinker to enjoy the flavours of the wine at the most optimum level – any colder and it makes the aromas harder to detect and any warmer and the wine can appear heavier and less bright.

Read: The IDEAL guide to serving wine at the right temperature

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE GLASSWARE

Julien says “Where possible opt for a glass with a large enough bowl to allow the full aromas of the wine to develop and really be appreciated.  Great examples of this include tulip glasses, classic white wine glasses or even larger red wine glasses for Rosé Champagnes to appreciate the flavours”.

POPPING BOTTLES PROPERLY

When the time comes to pop open the bottle, take your time and be careful. According to Compound Chemistry, champagne bottles contain more pressure than a car tyre, so wrap a tea towel around the cork to add grip, and point it away from yourself (and everyone else!). If you find you’ve got a stubborn cork that won’t come loose, hold the neck of the bottle under warm (but not hot) running water for a minute. The cork should then pop easily.

Speaking of which, we’re off to pop a bottle ourselves. Happy Global Champagne Day…cheers!

4 WAYS TO ENHANCE THE EXTERIOR OF YOUR HOME ON A BUDGET

Kerb appeal, which refers to the attractiveness of your home from the view of the street, matters hugely when it comes to the overall aesthetic of your home. You want to make sure you’re creating a good first impression on those who pass by and see your property, and this is particularly true if you’re planning on selling it.

In fact, as House Beautiful points out, you can add a huge £55’000 to the value of your home just by jazzing up its exterior, with the magazine revealing that ‘’93 per cent of the nation are more likely to attend a viewing if the house’s exterior is well maintained’’.

They go on to elaborate that a well kept garden, well kept clean windows and frames, fresh paintwork in neutral colours, a front porch, and stylish lighting are all essential features of that much coveted kerb appeal.

But those are all a little obvious, right? In terms of simple investments and adjustments you can make which don’t cost the earth or take time immemorial, here are 4 ways to enhance the exterior of your home on a budget.

REPLACE THE ROOF & SIDING

An old roof may not only look bad and be stained but it might also not be protecting you and your home properly. Such an investment makes foundational sense just as much as it does aesthetic.

It’s worth taking a look at your roof (or having a professional do so) and seeing if you need to replace any shingles or the entire structure. In this case, you might want to consider corrugated roofing sheets and learn more about why it’s a wise choice. Some of the benefits of such roofing include their ability to eliminate water build up, their longevity, and their tough yet lightweight disposition.

You should also look over your siding and decide if it’s worth trying to powerwash it or if you should replace it altogether. If you do replace your property’s siding or cladding, then make sure you research what colours and styles are most popular and will be worth your investment, as preferences differ according to location.

INSTALL A NEW GARAGE DOOR

A new garage door will offer a great return on your investment when you go to sell your home one day. Able to not only enhance the exterior of your home, a more modern garage door also better protects your belongings and property.

There are aesthetic considerations, too. A new garage door can help your home look more modern and will likely be a lot quieter to open and close. Installing a new garage door will boost your home’s kerb appeal, offer more protection and security, and increase your property value. Not to mention, the better appearance and superior insulation you’ll have.

SPRUCE UP THE LANDSCAPING

Another way to enhance the exterior of your home is to spruce up the landscaping and garden and make sure your home looks well kept and organised on the outside. Take the time to trim bushes and trees, rake up leaves and twigs, and plant colorful and beautiful flowers and other greenery. If it’s time to redesign your current landscaping setup then you may want to hire a professional to come in and help you out. Remember to also treat and cut your lawn so that it stays looking green and attractive.

DECORATE THE FRONT PORCH

Enhance the exterior of your home by spending some time decorating your front porch area. It’ll be fun to switch out your décor based on the season and time of year as well. In addition to adding an area rug, hanging plants, and small furniture pieces, you might also want to consider painting your front door. Choose a colour that will pop and compliment your home’s exterior and style. Decorating your front porch will make your home look more welcoming and charming and allow you to show off some of your own personal décor taste and style as well.

6 OF THE BEST PLACES TO VISIT ON YOUR COACH TOUR OF THE JURASSIC COAST

The Jurassic Coast is a stretch of coast, sand, pathway and road that boasts some serious natural wonder.

The UK’s first and only natural UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for its rocks, fossils and landforms, the Jurassic Coasts begins in Exmouth in the west and stretches for nearly 100 miles heading east, ending at the gorgeous Studland beach. Along the way, you’ll find postcard-perfect towns, sweeping vistas of sand and sea, and some of the world’s most ancient rock formations, some as much as 250 million years old!

It’s those 100 miles we’re traversing today, taking a load off and enjoying the comfort of a good ol’ fashioned staycation by coach.

We say ‘old fashioned’ but the perception of these Great British staycation institutions is changing. As the Great Destination Road Show recently reported, the popularity of coach holidays with young people is on the rise, with over 40% of those onboard now under the age of 65.

It’s easy to see why; there’s ample legroom, superb views of the scenery and most importantly, it’s a far more eco-friendly way to travel than by car or plane.

Rest assured, they don’t call this one of the best UK coach holidays for nothing. So, hop on board and buckle up; here are 6 of the best places to visit on your coach tour of the Jurassic Coast.

Though the Jurassic Coast begins in Exmouth, we’re beginning our journey in Sidmouth, a picturesque seaside town with a wide promenade ideal for strolling, and a visually arresting stretch of seafront villas that call to mind an entirely different era.

Sometimes referred to as ‘Devon’s best kept secret’, here, you can scale Jacob’s Ladder, a set of old wooden steps that lead from the beach of the same name up to Connaught Gardens (the views from which are outstanding).

From there, join the South West Coast Path, should you be keen on hiking rather than taking the easy option of four wheels. That path is the UK’s longest National Trail, a whopping 630 miles of hiking, scrambling and occasional strolling. The Sidmouth to Studland stretch encompasses 85 miles…see you back on the coach?

Away from dry land, the rock islands at Sidmouth, which are designed to protect and preserve the beaches here, are quite spectacular, too.

HIVE BEACH

An hour’s drive onwards east, crossing counties from Devon to Dorset, and we arrive at Hive Beach. This mile long, uncrowded stretch of coarse sand beach boasts a particularly dramatic backdrop; the cliffs of Burton Bradstock overlook the beach and be warned, are liable to drop rocks at any time.

Hive Beach is just one part of the Jurassic Coast’s larger stretch of Chesil Beach, an 18 mile belt of shingle ridge that is rugged, elemental and emotionally stirring. No wonder the renowned author John Fowles wrote of the area’s majesty; “It is above all an elemental place, made of sea, shingle and sky, its dominant sound always that of waves on moving stone’’.

Perhaps bring your own pen and paper, and write something equally poetic as you travel to your next stop on our coach tour of the Jurassic Coast…

DURDLE DOOR, LULWORTH COVE & THE FOSSIL FOREST

The most iconic, photographed landmark on the whole of the Jurassic Coast, the natural limestone arch of Durdle Door, rising out of the water like a mythical beast, has to be seen to be believed. Ideally, you’ll do just that, from afar at the Durdle Door Cliff Lookout Point and then from Durdle Door beach itself.

It’s not recommended that you enjoy a view of the famous natural arch from underneath it, however; the RNLI caution against swimming through the ‘door’ as the area is prone to stronger currents due to tides moving faster when funnelling through the arch.

An attractive but challenging (to put it mildly) twenty minute walk onwards and you’ll enjoy views of the stunning Lulworth Cove opening out in front of you. This almost perfectly circular cove is world famous for its unique geology – make sure you visit the Fossil Forest on the opposite side of the cove, which contains evidence of life from 145 million years ago.

SWANAGE

After all that hiking you’ll be glad for the 40 minute drive to Swanage, one of the Jurassic Coast’s most popular stops and its final town. Quaint, peaceful and picturesque, but with a surprising amount going on, it’s the quintessential British seaside escape

Rather than keep you here, we’ll provide you with some travel reading to bookmark for when you’re sitting comfortably onboard and staring out the window just won’t do; here are 5 IDEAL things to do in Swanage.

CORFE CASTLE

We’re heading inland slightly here, we realise, but it would be remiss of us not to show you Corfe Castle, one of Britain’s most famous medieval ruins.

In fact, we’re getting off the coach entirely and instead hopping on a steam train from Swanage to Corfe. Like a museum in motion, complete with old school private carriages and blissful views of the countryside, this might just be the best ride of the whole trip. The final view after half an hour on the train, as you pull into Corfe, is just stunning!

If you’re inclined to alight and explore the castle on foot, be warned that’s it’s a bit of a climb, since Corfe Castle is perched on a hill. Admission is £12 for adults.

OLD HARRY’S ROCKS & STUDLAND BAY

Back in Swanage, we’re bidding the coach farewell and enjoying the peaceful stroll of the Jurassic Coast’s Swanage to Studland walk, which takes around an hour. Along the path, you’ll see the majestic chalk stacks of Old Harry’s Rocks, as well as fine views of the English Channel with the Isle of Wight visible for the duration of the walk.

Finally, we descend into Studland Bay, a vast four mile stretch of sandy beach where you can find respite and relaxation even on its busiest days. What a trip!

Travelling From Heathrow Airport: 9 Hacks For A Stress Free Experience

Hey, indulge us here for a moment, as we enter this innocuous sounding article about airports with an inappropriate level of enthusiasm. Because it’s been so long since we’ve been at 30’000 feet that we’re even excited – we’d go as far as to say nostalgic – about a place we once considered hell; Heathrow.

Hey, we’re all guilty of a little wanderlust, especially in the winter, when images of Caribbean seas, South African skies and Sri Lankan sun dominate our Instagram feeds. As the nights draw in, our minds take flights of fancy abroad, but for the first time in what feels like forever, those flights can become reality.

Since travel restrictions relaxed earlier this month, and red, amber and green lists merged into one rainbow shade of vacay-inclusivity, our excitement has been building. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves; going on holiday, and especially the airport, is stressful at the best of times. And with new forms to fill in, PCR tests and checks to make, these are certainly not the best of times.

If you’ve watched (or just read the name of) the ITV documentary series “Heathrow: Britain’s Busiest Airport”, then you’ll know that Heathrow is indeed the UK’s largest and busiest airport as well as being the busiest airport in Europe.

As such, a little preparation is needed to ensure the transition from home to holiday mode is smooth and successful. We’re here to help with that; if you’re travelling from Heathrow Airport, here are 9 hacks for a stress free experience.

WHERE TO EAT

Hungry stomachs make unhappy holidays. It’s a saying as old as time itself (we just coined it), but it’s one that applies not only to the vacay itself, but also to the airport experience that precedes it.

Indeed, eating at an airport is necessary to beat both those moments of stress induced hanger and those moments of boredom induced hunger. Moreover, having a meal which isn’t plane food is essential to get you through the flight in one piece, particularly if you’re doing that whole 9am airport pint thing.

If that familiar, inflight ‘chicken or beef?’ dilemma doesn’t fill you with excitement, then you’ll be pleased to hear that Heathrow has some pretty decent dining options in the airport, all things considered.

For us, nothing beats the glow of the airport bar and you’ll find a great one in the Caviar House & Prunier Seafood Bar, in the Queen’s Terminal (that’s Terminal 5 to non-royalists). Having a few oysters,  rich in nutrients including vitamin B12, magnesium and zinc, is the ideal way to start a flight (we have no scientific information to back that up).

In terminal 5, you’ll also find Gordon Ramsay’s Plane Food, which has had mixed reviews. However, as Eater London highlights, “the express menus — 2 courses in 25 minutes for £22, or 3 in 35 minutes for £26 — can make Plane Food a real traveller’s delight.”

Terminal 5 is obviously the place to be, as Fortnum & Mason Bar can be found here, too, with decent takes on French classics and plenty of drinks options to get the holiday started early.

In Terminal 4, The Commision by Drake and Morgan offers a varied, serviceable menu, and in Terminal 2, Heston’s The Perfectionists’ Cafe does a range of all-day breakfasts, eggs, salads, burgers and pizzas pretty well (which kind of betrays the name, but anyway…).

Considering this is ‘airport food’ after all, designed to be cooked en masse and in a hurry, you can eat surprisingly well at Heathrow.

COVID TESTS AT THE AIRPORT

If you’re getting a PCR test at Heathrow airport, it’s worth booking online beforehand. There are options for completing your PCR test at a drop in clinic at the airport. Doing this is fine but you’ll likely pay slightly more. Be prepared for queues, too.

The government has recently announced that PCR tests will soon be dropped in favour of ‘lateral flow’ antigen testing, and this is expected to happen at the end of October. But as with all things relating to COVID, travel and this government, it’s essential to check the very latest guidelines just before you travel; there could be U-turns and changes in policies at a moment’s notice.

AIRPORT PARKING

Let’s be honest here; if you’re driving to Heathrow, then the stress levels of deciding to take the wheel could go either way. Sure, you’ve alleviated yourself of the heavy burden of lifting luggage on busy platforms, but equally, finding a parking space might send your anxiety into overdrive. Therefore, as the team at 4U Travel Solutions point out, it’s imperative you book an airport parking space in advance.

To enjoy the cheapest rates and bag the best spaces, pre-booking is essential. Ideally, you’ll do that through official channels, on Heathrow Airport’s dedicated parking platform.

THE HEATHROW EXPRESS

Alternatively, The Heathrow Express service runs every 15 mins and takes just 15 minutes to Terminals 2 and 3 (a little longer for Terminals 4 and 5) from London Paddington. If you want to be extra-organised, book ahead online – it costs £22. Trains run from approximately 5am until midnight.

You could also take a standard train from London Paddington to Heathrow Terminals 2, 3 and 4, which takes around half an hour and costs £11.20. A free shuttle will connect you to Terminal 5, if needed.

With Heathrow Terminals 2 and 3, as well as 4, and 5 all on the Piccadilly Line, you can also take the tube from any station on that line. From Picadilly Circus, the journey takes around 50 minutes, though the cost of a ticket is significantly cheaper than the previous two options.

Finally, there’s even a coach service, which leaves from Victoria Coach Station, stopping at Hammersmith or Earl’s court. Running from around 4.20am until 10.20pm, this journey could take upwards of an hour and a half during busy times.

Alternatively, if you’re keen to avoid the hassle of public transport, renting a car to and from the airport from companies like Rental24.co.uk, can make things feel like they’re running super smoothly, even if you find you’ve lost your passport or packed winter clothes for a summer holiday!

BOOK YOUR HEATHROW AIRPORT TAXI IN ADVANCE

Let’s be real, the last thing you want before a flight is a frantic race to the terminal, arguing with your sat nav or begging an Uber driver to arrive faster. That’s where booking a Heathrow airport taxi in advance comes in clutch.

Pre-booking a taxi not only ensures peace of mind on the day of your travel, but also allows you to lock in a fixed fare (no peak-time pricing drama), pick your vehicle size based on luggage needs, and choose a pickup time that works with your schedule. Most reputable services offer flight tracking and real-time updates, so if your flight is delayed or lands early, your driver will still be there.

Whether you’re coming in from central London or the outskirts, a pre-booked taxi gives you door-to-door service without the schlepp across train platforms. Our advice? Book at least 24 hours in advance, or earlier during peak holiday periods. You’ll thank yourself later when you’re gliding into the drop-off zone instead of stress-sprinting through it.

CHANGE YOUR MONEY BEFOREHAND

When changing money at Heathrow airport, exchange rates and transaction fees are, simply put, not favourable to the flyer. As Investopedia point out, ‘’Because airport-based currency exchange shops know that you might need local currency to catch a bus, train, or taxi, so they make big profits offering you the worst exchange rate.’’

The best place to get good exchange rates are at local ATMs or local banks at your destination. So, do your exchanging before you get to the airport or, better still, don’t do it at all!

SLEEPING AT THE AIRPORT

There are only a small clutch of exorbitantly priced ‘nap rooms’ in the terminals at Heathrow airport, and soft, sleep-friendly seating is hard to come by. What’s more, all terminals tend to stay brightly lit 24 hours a day, so catching 40 winks can be tough. Terminal 3 does offer hotel rooms in 6, 9 and 12 hour blocks though, again, you’re going to pay for the privilege. Check out Sleeping in Airport’s useful guide to sleeping in Heathrow here for more on all of that.

CHECK IN ONLINE OR THROUGH AN AIRLINE APP

Since Heathrow is one of the busiest airports, you know that the queues are going to be huge, and travelling in the time of a global pandemic has only exacerbated this. Do make your life easier by checking in at home first, which you can do via your airline’s official portal or on the Heathrow app. Speaking of which…

DOWNLOAD THE HEATHROW APP GUIDE

Billed as your ‘ideal travel companion’ (hey, we thought that was us), the Heathrow Airport app offers useful features for travellers including live flight updates, the latest offers in shops and restaurants, maps of the terminal to find your way around, and onward links for checking in. Download it!

5 FUN ACTIVITIES FOR ASTRONOMY FANS

Whether you’re an amateur or an expert, astronomy can be one of the most satisfying hobbies to pursue. Having the entire universe as an object of study and the solar system at the end of your telescope is mind-blowing.

Although it may initially seem intimidating to those without a scientific background, there are plenty of activities for you and your family to enjoy all year round. Here are just a few of them; these 5 fun activities for astronomy fans.

DARK SKIES FESTIVAL

National Parks are some of the darkest places you can visit in the UK, and you can celebrate the beauty of our skies at one of the many festivals that are held throughout autumn and winter.

Dark Skies festivals are designed to entertain and delight everyone who loves the night sky, the planets, stars and astronomy. There’s something for everyone, from night-time activities like caving, running, walking, cycling and stargazing to daytime events where you can learn more about constellations or how to build a rocket.

There are also many activities for families, first-time stargazers, those who want to expand their astronomy knowledge, or even activities to learn astrophotography. Festivals run late into the year, and many more are held between January and February, so there’s always plenty of festivals to choose from if you want to get your fill of our starry skies.

PERSEIDS METEOR SHOWER

The Perseid meteor shower is one of the most dramatic annual celestial events you can see in the night sky between July and August. Called Perseids, as the meteors seem to originate from the constellation of Perseus, it is a favourite for meteor hunters due to its high hourly rate and bright meteors.

Those hoping to observe the meteor shower can look out for the event wherever they are as it can be seen easily without special equipment and in light-polluted locations. However, there are certain types of places that will increase your chances of spotting the meteors, and it’s essential to plan ahead by checking the weather forecast; this is because a cloudy evening could ruin your plans to experience this fantastic celestial occurrence

Heading out into the countryside or to one of the UK’s many national parks will give you the best chance of seeing the shower, but you can also head to a local park and turn your back to the street lamps to get a better view if you are unable to travel. Once you’re ready, give yourself around 15 minutes to adjust to the dark, as this will help you spot even the faintest of meteors during the Perseid meteor; this means no mobile phones. As the meteors can appear in any part of the sky, for the best experience, find a spot where you can see as much of the night sky as possible.

While telescopes and binoculars are not necessary, and many people opt to watch the meteor shower without them to avoid restricting the size of the visible sky, there are many astronomical targets to keep an eye out for that would radiate through a telescope.

If you’re going to head to a national park, some of the best in the UK, the guys over at carbon rental company Camptoo tell us that there are the best places to see the meteorite:

  • Tomintoul and Glenlivet, Cairngorms – This remote area in the north of Scotland offers a secluded area to take in the dark skies and star gaze for the longest period of time in the UK.
  • Coll – Another remote area of Scotland, Coll is an island off the west coast by the Isle of Mull.
  • Northumberland National Park -A well-travelled place in the north east of England, Northumberland is a popular spot amongst walkers and camper.
  • Galloway Forest – Another area of Scotland worth visiting is Galloway Forest, just west of Dumfries. It was the first area in the UK to be recognised as a Dark Sky Park.
  • Snowdonia National Park -The national park around Wales’ largest mountain has the most campsites on our list, with 137 different sites to choose from for travellers if you’re camping.
  • Other destinations recommended include Elan Valley, Exmoor National Park, Sark Island and Brecon Beacons.

WORLD UFO DAY

Every year, in late June or early July, lovers of astronomy, space and the unknown mark World UFO day. Many countries observe this day as 24th June because this was the day aviator Kenneth Arnold reported seeing nine unusual objects flying over the state of Washington, though the World UFO Day Organisation, or WUFODO, established the official date as 2nd July.

You could, of course, celebrate it twice in quick succession!

On UFO day, many celebrate what they believe was an alien spacecraft crash that allegedly occurred in the summer of 1947 at Area 51, Roswell, New Mexico, and was subsequently covered up by the US government. Others look to the moon landing, as it is also widely accepted by many in the UFO community that something happened in regards to the moon landing race and that there may have even been aliens involved. For more information, check our UFO Insight and this article on returning to the Moon.

The WUFODO aims for UFO day to raise awareness about the possibility of the existence of UFOs and intelligent beings from outer space. Various celebrations take place all across the world for many reasons, but according to WUFODO, on UFO day, people are encouraged to look at the sky and try to identify UFOs.

In the UK, many people celebrating UFO day take their families to Liverpool, which is often referred to as the UK’s alien hotspot, with more sightings here than anywhere else in the country. Others head out into the countryside for night-time stargazing in the hope of seeing something more exciting. Whatever you choose to do on UFO day, there’s plenty of fun activities for astronomy fans to enjoy.

STARGAZING

Stargazing is a magical and inexpensive way to get started with astronomy or backyard astrophotography and provides a fantastic activity for experts and novices alike. Many of the night’s wonders can be seen with the naked eye, so you don’t need any special equipment for your first attempt, but if you want a better experience, many first-timers take binoculars to get more out of the experience

If you’re an expert, you probably already have the kit you need. Still, if you’re new to astronomy, it’s worth investing in a telescope along with a decent camera and tripod in order to capture the best moments.

A star chart or an app showing a map of the night sky will be one of the best tools to help you get more out of stargazing, showing you the constellations you’re looking at by assisting you in identifying their stars. If you’re new to using sky charts or maps, to get started, first identify Polaris, the Pole Star, which is always due north.

For the best stargazing in the UK, consider a trip to our best observatories which include the The Island Planetarium near Yarmouth,  The Spaceguard Centre in Powys near the Welsh Marches and the Kielder Observatory which is located in the UK’s largest International Dark Sky Park.

PLANETARIUMS

Planetariums were first created at the beginning of the 20th century as a way to reconstruct and map the night sky as accurately as possible. Today, planetariums have been technologically improved to provide immersive experiences for people all around the globe.

The first modern planetarium was built by Zeiss in 1930 following a request from Max Wolf, who was an astronomer and director of the Heidelberg Observatory at the time. Nowadays, there are countless planetariums worldwide, and there are about 40 planetariums in the United Kingdom, alone.

Planetarium shows are both exciting and educational, providing the opportunity to learn about the diverse and wondrous things that exist beyond our earth, including the Moon, comets, stars, planets, and the Northern Lights.

These shows are ideal for avid astronomers, family, and those curious about the experience, with many going back for more once they have their first taste of the excitement as planetariums capture the imaginations of all ages.

The Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London is arguably one of the best planetariums in the UK. Here, you can enjoy a wide variety of shows including ‘The Sky Tonight’, a classic guide to the night sky presented by the Royal Observatory Greenwich astronomy.

Thinktank, Birmingham’s award winning science museum, offers a 4k planetarium system which makes you feel completely immersed in the solar system, while another great place to explore space is Armagh Planetarium in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, which is the longest running planetarium in the British Isles.

TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE

One of the most exciting activities to experience as a fan of astronomy is a total lunar eclipse. When the earth is directly between the Sun and the Moon, and the Moon lies in the earth’s shadow, an eclipse of the Moon occurs. In order for a total lunar eclipse to transpire, all three must lie in a straight line; this means that the Moon needs to pass through the darkest part of the earth’s shadow, which is known as the umbra.

Total lunar eclipses don’t happen often, but astronomy fans are in luck as the next total lunar eclipse will occur on 16th May 2022, and will be visible over parts of Europe and Africa, most of North America, and all of South America.

While those in the UK will not be able to see every aspect of the eclipse, they will still be able to see the lunar eclipse in totality when the Moon turns red. If you’re interested in witnessing the next total lunar eclipse, you will need to have an early start to your day, as the Moon will begin to enter the earth’s shadow shortly after 02:30 BST, and the full eclipse will happen just before 04:30 BST.

Although the eclipse lasts for more than five hours, ending at approximately 07:50 BST, observers in the UK will only be able to view the eclipse between 02:30 and 05:10 BST as the Moon will be below the horizon after this period.

Happy stargazing!

5 EASY AND EFFECTIVE TIPS TO MAKE YOUR INSTAGRAM SELFIES STAND OUT

‘’A life lived through a lens is not a life worth living.’’ And which famous ‘philosopher’ said that? Why, IDEAL magazine, of course.

But let’s face it; there’s not many stronger feelings of smug satisfaction than when you capture a superb selfie, one which accentuates all the parts you’re particularly proud of, and even tones down those of which you’re not.

So often, it’s a game of chance, but in the right hands, getting the ideal selfie isn’t purely down to luck. There’s an art to this thing, and if you’re looking for the perfect profile picture or stunning self-portrait, then you’re in luck; here’s 5 easy and effective tips to make your Instagram selfies stand out.

AVOID THE DREADED GLARE

Sweaty, shiny, slippery…the dreaded glare can be blamed for many a selfie-based transgression.

There are a few simple steps you can take to avoid this. Firstly, if you’re shooting with the flash, bounce that light off another surface instead of shooting straight into your face. Should you wear glasses, you could opt for anti-reflective lenses, too.

Secondly, play around with position to mitigate the glare and if all else fails, take the selfie at a different time of night.

Beware a glare you don’t at first notice, too. Often this glare, whether that’s a shiny forehead or devil-esque eyes, isn’t always noticed until the profile picture or selfie shot has been posted. For this reason, never post pics to Instagram when you’re out and about; wait until you’re inside and your eyes have readjusted to the ordinary light.

PETS & PROPS

An existential question, perhaps, but is a selfie still a selfie if you’ve got a pet in your pic?

Hey, we don’t mean those much-memed Tinder profile pics with a heavily sedated tiger. But rather, including a beloved pet in a selfie can add intrigue and humour to a shot which is so often otherwise, well, a little self indulgent.

The same goes for other ‘props’, like a pair of comedy sunglasses (mind that dreaded glare!), an amusing top hat, or a fake moustache…have fun with this thing!

THE RULE OF THIRDS

This rule allows you to take out-of-this-world selfies by employing one of the most efficient, effective rules of composition.

How does the rule of thirds work, we hear you ask? Well, you simply divide the picture (or, in this case, the phone screen’s display) into nine equal squares by mentally drawing two vertical and two horizontal lines. There are apps to do this for you, by the way.

Then, place your face (the subject) along these lines, ideally at the intersections rather than slap bang in the middle of a square, which, often inadvertently, looks too obvious and simplistic. This technique will help you focus the attention of anyone looking at the photo on the intended subject, which is you, clarifying the viewer’s gaze and creating a harmonious picture.

Alternatively, and a little more complicated in getting to grips with, you could consider the Golden Ratio (roughly 1.618 to 1) to position your shots in a historically eye-pleasing way.

MAKE THE MOST OF THE MAGIC HOUR

‘’When the sun goes down, that’s the magic hour…’’

Another term well known to those with even a passing interest in photography should be the magic hour (sometimes also referred to as the ‘golden’ one). Indeed, to those in the know, these are the two windows of opportunity when most of the greatest shots are taken.

These rose tinged 60 minutes just after sunrise and just before sunset, at dusk and dawn basically, are without fail the ones most bathed in that warm kind of glow which both evokes nostalgia and the sense that anything’s possible. Harness its power to capture the best selfies possible.

ALL THE FILTERS, NO IDEAS

We have the whole world at our fingertips these days. You can take an image of the ocean at your door and turn it into a desert on just about any phone, all with the wonder of filters, and this also applies to your face.

The great thing about Instagram is that you can take a selfie that you like, play around with it as much as you please, all while retaining the original for reference and, if needed, retreat. Then, you simply put it through every available filter and see what comes out. For the most part, these will go straight into the cutting bin, but occasionally you’ll strike gold.

We would recommend exercising a little caution here, however. Natural selfies are still so often the most visually arresting.

THE BOTTOM LINE

We really ought to be having more fun with selfies than we currently do, but all too often, they’re a po-faced endeavour. Instead of getting trapped into formulaic and dull patterns, why not push your pictures forward, using the magic hour, the rule of thirds, props, pets and more. Good luck and we can’t wait to see what you produce!

5 OF THE BEST BRITISH WATCH BRANDS

IDEAL for surprising your loved ones with this Christmas

It seems as though with every new tick of the second hand, a new British watch brand emerges, offering elegant watches at inexpensive prices.

But if it’s sophistication and timelessness (an ironic notion in a watch, perhaps) that you’re after, then you may well have to pay a premium for a British watch brand that your loved one will truly be proud to wear. Not to worry; such purchases represent a worthwhile investment as well as a warmly received present, since a premium watch is built to last…for life, not just for Christmas and all that.

With that in mind, here are 5 of the best British watch brands, IDEAL for surprising your loved ones with this Christmas.

BREMONT WATCHES

Bremont is a Great British watchmaker that produces luxury watches. The company was founded in 2002 by two brothers, Nick and Giles English. Inspired by the aviation heritage of their grandfather, who designed an aeroplane for Brabazon during WWII which set several records at high speeds across the Atlantic Ocean, they set out to make a timepiece that matched this engineering ingenuity.

Bremont Watch Company has become famous because its timepieces have been chosen to be worn on space missions. They include Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo program and the Project Juno mission to Jupiter.

Interestingly, in 1971’s Apollo 15 mission, David Scott became the first ever astronaut not from the USA to land on the moon. Guess what he was wearing on his wrist?

The most popular models are the Supermarine 500 (chronograph) and Jet Team Limited Edition (42mm case). Prices start from £2700.

If that feels excessive for a watch, then buying component parts may help you keep the cost down. Consider investing in exclusive watch straps and faces separately, allowing you to change things up and switch between timepieces effortlessly. You’ll need a special tool to attach the watch strap and a couple of minutes spare to do so. But with the right watch, you’ve got all the time in the world…

GARRICK WATCHES

Garrick Watches was founded by David Brailsford and Simon Michlmayr in 2014 with the intention of making a watch and clock brand that was an affordable alternative for Swiss watches with similar designs and quality levels.

Let’s just say that they more than succeeded.

It should be noted that since each timepiece is crafted from scratch following an order being made, you may have to wait several weeks after clicking ‘buy’ to receive your watch. The wait, however, is most certainly worth it; Garrick makes a maximum of 50 watches a year, prioritising quality and exclusivity over mass production.

Perhaps their most popular model is the S1 Timepiece, an absolute work of art that takes four months to construct and with a production cap of just 5 per annum. This high degree of exclusivity comes at a price; yours for £23,329 ex VAT.

WILLIAM WOOD WATCHES

William Wood is another British watchmaker which is worth considering if your wallet is furnished with plenty of notes or your bank balance plenty of zeros.

The company was founded by Jonny Garrett in 2016 as a tribute to his grandfather William Wood, a firefighter. A 1920s firefighter’s helmet adorns each and every bespoke watch, which are made with Swiss movements, sapphire glass, leather straps, and a very British soul. With materials like these, keeping fine watches in top condition with Lux Watch Care is a no-brainer.

Despite being a newcomer on the market, this British company has already received several awards for its timepieces including the Watches of Switzerland Award in 2010 as Best New Watch Brand and Red Dot Design Awards also in 2010 for Product Design.

William Wood watches keep things tight and quality focused with just four watch collections in their range; the Triumph, Valiant, Bronze and Chivalrous. It’s the former that is our favourite, with the Triumph collection coming in three forms, Oxygen, Fuel or Heat (rendered in blue, yellow or red straps, respectively). The back of the watch face is truly iconic, displaying the watch’s inner workings but also that famous instruction; ‘’In case of fire, break glass’’.

It’s yours for £2’995, with every purchase driving a donation to The Fire Fighters Charity, to whom William Wood have so far donated over £25’000.

VERTEX WATCHES

Vertex watches are among the best luxury British watch brands and just like other luxury timepieces, they are not cheap; prices range from £2’500 for the M Series to £3458 for the MP45 series.

That said, you get what you pay for here, and the watches produced by Vertex boast exquisite craftsmanship in their manufacturing process. Founded in 1916 by Londoner Claude Lyons, the company is now run by his great grandson Don Cochrane, and it’s this lineage and heritage that’s reflected in these seriously stylish timepieces.

CHRISTOPHER WARD WATCHES

Christopher Ward is a relatively new brand which was established in 2004, but that’s not to say that the watches produced here don’t have the enduring quality and exquisite craftsmanship you expect from a luxury watch.

In fact, the Christopher Ward brand offers high-quality watches to any taste. Here, you’ll find outstanding dive watches as well as dress timepieces, making it a versatile choice. Christopher Ward watches are designed in England’s Maidenhead and produced in Biel, Switzerland.

The price of Christopher Ward watches varies from £700 to £7400 depending on the model, type of watch (chronograph or automatic), and material it’s made from (gold or steel).

THE BOTTOM LINE

The British watch industry has a long and revered history of excellence. With world-class engineering and the finest materials, these five top British watch brands are sure to please any discerning horologist in your life.

From classic designs with timeless appeal to cutting-edge technology that will have them checking their wrist far more frequently than is necessary, if you’re looking for a luxury Christmas present with some serious longevity, look no further than upwards, at the article you’ve just read.

Here are some must-haves for your handbag this winter.

FOLD UP SHOPPING BAG

There’s no excuse not to use reusable shopping bags when the planet feels like it’s on its last breath. There is a wide range that you can now find with some even folding up snugly to fit into your handbag…ideal for those times you find yourself at the supermarket till bagless and shamefaced!

HAND SANITISER

This should go without saying, but you should have a bottle of hand sanitiser in your handbag. Even if you think the worst of COVID is behind us, we’ve all read about the ‘worst cold ever’ currently stalking the country’s public spaces. Protect yourself and those around you. Nuff said…

FACEMASKS

Hey, even if you spent the global pandemic sharing conspiracy theories on Facebook, it should be noted that in many parts of the world, wearing a facemask is normal during cold and flu season, both out of politeness and in the name of public health.

Protect yourself from that pesky cold we mentioned, as well as the continued threat from COVID, and carry a facemask in your bag when you are out and about this winter.

Besides, with some of the more funky mask designs, they can actually be a great fashion accessory. Or, super handy when you’re trying to hide from an ex or a colleague!

TISSUES & LOZENGES

Do you jump if someone coughs behind you or move away if another person has the sniffles? Obviously not every sniffle out there is COVID, but to reassure the general public and keep tickly throat at bay with some lozenges and that nose in check, always have a pack of tissues handy in your handbag. Hey, you could even lend one to that annoying sniffler opposite you on the tube. Just a thought…

POTIONS & LOTIONS

And by potions we mean makeup; after all, the transformation a little makeup can do to your skin is pretty magical.

In winter the cold weather can be tough on our skin but the rain can be even worse. Keep your face looking good by carrying your makeup bag around with you in case you get caught in a rainstorm and all of your carefully applied slap slips off. Indeed, there’s nothing worse than spending time on your makeup to have it all washed off in the rain when you are out and about. Actually, there is; when your tears wash it away, but anyway….

Keep things compact and have some emergency makeup foundation and mascara handy to help tidy up your face if it does get washed off. We’re also huge fans of carrying a Dr. Paw Paw in our bags come winter – this multi-tasking balm does wonders for moisturising, skin protection and hair conditioning…it’s even a decent lip balm.

Hands can get cracked and dry in the winter, especially since we’re all still washing our hands more (aren’t we guys? Aren’t we?). While handwashing helps to prevent illness, frequent hand washing can dry your skin. Moreover, using disinfectant products can dry out our skin even more, creating a vicious, never-ending cycle. To avoid cracked and sore hands, pop a moisturiser in your handbag, too.

A HANDBAG HERO HEADSCARF

Here at IDEAL, scarves are a winter staple in our handbags and have come to the rescue on many occasions. Forgotten your tissues and don’t want to use your sleeve in public?  Just whip the headscarf out of your bag and pretend it’s a handkerchief. Been rained upon and your hair is a frizzy mess? That headscarf is your saviour. Keen to sit in the park but the ground’s frostbitten and dirty? You know what to do.

Wash the scarf between uses, of course. We know what you were thinking…

A MINI UMBRELLA

Damp, drizzling and with perennially grey skies – yep that’s the UK in the winter, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

We would actually. Anyway, having a small umbrella in your bag can help you to stay that little bit drier when the Great British weather all too predictably announces itself. An umbrella is advisable, but make sure it’s sturdy enough to withstand the wind yet small enough to fit in your handbag. And if you also decide to pack a rain poncho,  we won’t judge you.

SUNGLASSES

On those sunny, snowy winter days (they do happen) a pair of sunglasses is essential. Too much sunlight is a threat to your eyes any time of year, and although you might spend a good portion of winter seeking even a singular ray of sun, overexposure at any time of year can be detrimental, especially when snow is involved.

Snow can reflect as much as 80% of UV radiation – which is double what you would normally be getting. In contrast, water, grass and soil reflect no more than 10% and dry beach sand up to 15%. So, even though you might not realise it, your eyes might be in danger of being exposed to too much UV radiation in wintry conditions.

GLASSES CARE KIT

Do you wear glasses? If you do, you need to keep a glasses care kit in your bag. The cold weather and rain can cause strains and stains on your glasses that make it hard to see out of them. Fortunately, there are plenty of little sprays and cloths that you can invest in to carry around with you. On top of that, remember to always bring your glasses case with you so you can pop them in there and they won’t get scratched.

HAND WARMERS

You may not have heard of hand warmers, but they are cute little things that you can use to keep your fingers warm when you are out and about. These are really great on the train when the heating isn’t working, for instance, and can be popped inside your oversized mittens and carried discreetly around with you.

You can even get a big one to slip under your clothes to keep you warm under your jacket. If you feel the need to cover yourself in hand warmers and hot water bottles before you leave the house, we won’t judge you for it! Rest assured; we’ll be doing it, too.

POWERBANK

How often do you find yourself running out of power when you are heading home from work? On a dark winter night, this is never a good idea – and can actually be unsafe – so make sure that you have a power bank in your bag so that you can charge your phone on the go. Just make sure that it is fully charged or it will be pointless carrying it with you! Yes, we do speak from experience.

GLOVES AND A HAT

If you don’t wear a set of gloves and a hat, you can always put some in your handbag and have them ready in case it gets too cold. You might forget about them if you don’t normally wear them but if they are in your handbag, you pop them on and help keep you a bit warmer when you are out and about. And the best bit? We think a set looks pretty darn stylish.

A BOTTLE OF WATER

Staying hydrated can be tough during the winter – it almost feels counterintuitive to be drinking water when it’s cold out.

But getting dehydrated in winter is actually easier than in summer, because we don’t notice that we’re losing water. Having a water bottle handy at all times can negate this issue, and can also help with keep those dry winter skin issues we mentioned earlier at bay, too.

ACTIVITY PACKS FOR KIDS (OR KIDULTS)

This is a strange one but just hear us out for a second. Having an activity pack in your bag can be a lifesaver, especially if you have kids or a kidult who are getting bored. A small colouring book can make all the difference to a journey and they will love seeing this little pack of fun appearing from your bag.

THE BOTTOM LINE

So there you have it, we’ve reached both the bottom of our bag and the bottom of the article. Hang on, has anyone got a spare hair tie we could borrow?

RAINY DAY SAVING: WAYS TO BUDGET BETTER & BOLSTER YOUR EMERGENCY FUND

Your finances can largely dictate what sort of life you live and can help save you in times of emergencies. Whilst no one likes talking about money, there are changes you can make in your life, and advice that you can follow, that could see you start making that investment or deposit sooner, but even more importantly than that, have you covered for any future financial problems

For those saving for a rainy day, here are some ways to budget better and bolster your emergency fund.

CUT A SINGLE EXPENSE EACH WEEK

If you are looking to understand your expenses and live the best life that you possibly can, then making small incremental changes to your outgoings is a sustainable way to put money aside for a larger purchase later down the line.

Cutting expenses on your Wednesday espresso in the local cafe one week, or your Friday night takeaway the next, or even that second bottle of wine you buy to finish off your Sunday roast, can all make one massive difference when considered accumulatively. Each time you make such a sacrifice, put the equivalent money in the kitty for a rainy day.

Setting up a separate ‘emergency’ account into which you pay a small sum each month is a sound idea, giving you a buffer in case your budgeting hits the skids.

The nature of the working world right now is unpredictable and unreliable, and for many, income has become less steady and job security more precarious. Having an emergency fund set up, even if you only contribute a little each week, is essential to avoid any financial surprises that might be lurking around the corner.

DOWNSIZE DEBTS

A great way to hold more power over your finances is to be aware of your debts and what you owe in general. You should assess every outgoing, loan repayment, credit card bill, overdraft charge and the rest, marking them down on a spreadsheet so you have a simple way to give your overall financial health an overview.

This will allow you to visually see your debts, and, if necessary, work on a debt management plan. A debt management plan allows you to distinguish the difference between a priority debt and non-priority debt, and figure out which debts are costing you the most, in terms of money and a negatively affected credit score.

A priority debt can be identified as a type of debt that has more serious consequences when not paid off sooner whereas non-priority debts refer to things such as student loans and benefits overpayments, debts that are essentially less urgent.

Should you need free debt advice, you can speak to one of the following debt charities.

SAVINGS ACCOUNT SAVVY

If you struggle to save, or find it difficult to change your daily habits, then consider the bigger picture and open a holiday savings account, sometimes referred to as a Christmas Club. Such an account receives routine deposits as a percentage of your paycheck, accruing a little interest along the way and keeping that money safe until your next big purchase happens.

It should be noted that such accounts, when done contractually via your bank, may charge you for early withdrawal. As such, it might be a better idea to arrange such payments in a more ‘casual’ way, such as via Monzo’s ‘Create a Pot’ feature.

Many people swear by a simplified, monthly 10% savings rate as a general ballpark figure to aim for. You can set up a monthly direct debit from your primary bank account into a savings app, or take advantage of one of the many savings apps currently out there which can automate this process further for you.

DO A DETAILED AUDIT OF SUBSCRIPTIONS, MEMBERSHIPS & CONTRACTS

You’d be surprised at just how many people continue to pay subscriptions, standing orders and direct debits without even realising. Thoroughly reviewing your actual outgoings, with a fine comb or better yet, your eyes, is an opportunity to identify any further savings.

Should you be paying members of Netflix, Amazon Prime, Sky Go and Disney Plus, for example, ask yourself; do you really need all of them to flick mindlessly and never actually settle on a show to watch? Or, have you got a gym membership that’s currently not being used? Could it be time to cancel it? And don’t get us started on those ‘free trials’ that always get forgotten about, then paid for…do yourself a favour and opt out of all of them straight after reading this.

You might also find savings within your existing energy, internet and phone contracts; do an audit of your usage and see if you’re paying for a service or amount that you don’t actually use.

THRIFT CAN BE FUN

When you think of saving your money, it’s perhaps not something that you think of as fun. In fact, it can often be the very opposite of fun. But for those who embrace the challenge, and try to find luxury in thrift and saving, the whole thing can be a little easier.

HOW TO MANIFEST YOUR DREAM LIFE DURING OCTOBER’S FULL MOON IN ARIES

Ideal for feeling like you’re in control of the cosmos

Harness your manifestation powers because this month’s full moon in Aries presents you with a blank canvas to paint your dream reality!

Aries is the archetypal sign of the warriors, and it’s imbued with self-assertion, courage, and personal power. In opposition with the sun in Libra and bolstered by the array of action-oriented planets in Libra, you will claim your sovereignty and create your personal heaven on Earth.

The focus is on manifesting your dream reality, finding the balance in your relationships, and letting go of what no longer serves you. These practical tips compiled by the gemstone jeweller Angelic Diamonds will help you make the most out of the full moon on 20th October 2021.

CREATE YOUR FULL MOON MANTRA

Assert your intention to reclaim your personal power to the universe by creating your own mantra. A mantra is a sacred word or phrase that is composed of high-vibrational sounds that resonate with the universal energetic field. In translation from Sanskrit, it means “tool of thought” and is recited or chanted with melody to manifest positive affirmations and reach higher states of consciousness.

To create your full moon mantra, think about what your intention is. Perhaps you want to let go of a negative behaviour, be more independent in your relationships, or land your dream job. Whatever your intention is, weaver it into one of the following sentences: “I am…”, or “I act…”.

“I am aware of my personal sovereignty”, “I am courageous”, “I act from a place of love for myself”, are just some examples of what your full moon mantra could be.

Once you’re happy with it, write it down on a piece of paper and place it somewhere around your house or workplace where you can see it several times a day. Your bathroom mirror or your office desk are great options.

Alongside reading it out aloud when you see it, make an effort to repeat it in your mind as many times as possible on the 20th October and afterwards. During meditation, your mantra will help you stay focused on your intention. If you want to make things more fun, create a little melody for your mantra and chant it.

JOURNAL TO RELEASE NEGATIVE ENERGY

Full moons are all about letting go of that which no longer serves you. Unhealthy beliefs, stagnated energies, and grudges can all be thrown out of the window.

The best way to release them is through journaling. Your journal is the keeper of your emotional world, and it’s a safe space to share your thoughts and feelings. Research shows that journaling has a number of benefits on your mental health, including reduced stress, clarity of mind, and better understanding of yourself.

When you’re journaling to release negative beliefs and emotions, write down what is it that no longer serves you and why you want to let it go. Next to it, you can also write a positive belief or emotion you wish to replace it with.

You can even turn your journaling release practice into a little ritual by writing what you’re releasing on a piece of paper and then burning it. This magnifies the process.

ENVISION YOUR DREAM LIFE

Now that you’ve let go of your unnecessary baggage, it’s time to envision your dream reality.

The magical power of writing comes into play once again in a manifestation technique called scripting. Scripting is a written form of visualisation and part of the Law of Attraction. It emerged in the 1970s from the neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) approach which prompted participants to visualise their future through all their five senses.

All you have to do is simply write down the unfolding of your dream future in the present sense and truly believe your story. Essentially, you’re writing the script of your reality.

MANIFEST WITH GEMSTONES

Gemstones are a great tool to aid you in the manifestation process. You can meditate with them, wear them as jewellery, or place them next to your bedside. For the full moon in Aries, these are the most powerful gemstones to implement into your practice:

Carnelian: Surrounded by its blood-orange fiery aura, carnelian corresponds with the fire element in Aries. It will give you the courage to go after your dream and will also protect you in your quest for your life’s purpose.

Malachite: This  is the ultimate manifestation crystal because it will support any desire you have, whether it’s attracting love, money, or adventure. A powerful energy amplifier, it will destroy any mental barriers you might have to make way for the new beginnings to enter your life.

Bloodstone: A true healer, bloodstone will mend your emotional wounds while equipping you with the energy to follow your purpose. Even when you’ve lost hope and feel defeated, it will rejuvenate your spirit so that you can fulfil your mission.

Citrine: Known as the “success stone”, or the “merchant stone”, citrine is a must-have when it comes to attracting abundance in all areas of your life but primarily in the financial realms. It will bring you unimagined wealth and prosperity matched with great confidence. Citrine corresponds with your solar plexus chakra, which is the centre of empowerment and self-esteem.

Rose quartz: October’s full moon puts an emphasis on relationships and opens up a portal for attracting love. The best gemstone to aid you in your love-seeking adventure is rose quartz. It will help you manifest a healthy, harmonious relationship with someone else or yourself and open up your heart chakra.

This month’s full moon in Aries is a gateway to your dream life, so let yourself imagine what your bright future holds and manifest it with the tools in this guide.

CUFFING SEASON FOR COUPLES: 4 WAYS TO GIVE YOUR SEX LIFE A LIFT TODAY

IDEAL if your love life is feeling more tepid than tempestuous this autumn

Cuffing Season is officially upon us, that time of year when single folk look to bed down with a short term partner to get them through the colder months in a comforting, non-committal way.

But for those already in a long term relationship, the turning of the seasons into more cuddly, cosy territory might not bring the same satisfaction. In fact, the coronavirus pandemic only exacerbated a physical divide between cohabiting couples, with research consistently suggesting that couples were having less sex, borne out by decreased birth rates across the world.

If you’re keen to rejuvenate the raunchier side of your relationship as the nights draw in, then it may be time to give your sex life an overhaul. With the help of Sinful, here are 4 ways to give your sex life a lift today, IDEAL if your love life is feeling more tepid than tempestuous this autumn.

ADDRESS ISSUES IN THE RELATIONSHIP AS A WHOLE

The decreased frequency of sex between a couple is rarely down to a decreased interest in sex alone. There are often a whole host of reasons why that intimate side has dwindled, from quarrels about washing up duties to disputes about money.

If you and your partner are spending too much time on your phone, you’ve stopped going on dates, the romance has dwindled, or you’ve stopped focusing on your own passions and interests, then these could all be signs that something more foundational is happening.

Check out these 5 signs that the spark has gone in your relationship and the ideal ways to fix them for more on that.

GET ADVENTUROUS WITH SEX TOYS

Plenty of people, especially those who have been in a relationship for a long time, are a bit shy when it comes to trying new things in the bedroom. They are used to certain things and complacency can set in.

This can be detrimental to a rich and varied sex life. Every once in a while, a couple will experience dry spells, sure, and this is perfectly understandable, especially for those people who have been together for a long time. But by getting adventurous, you can explore a new side of your partner (and yourself!), opening up new possibilities in your sex life while doing so.

Sinful recommend introducing some sex toys into the bedroom. They say that ‘’Experimenting with sex toys like sucking silicone vibrator together as a couple can increase the level of intimacy and happiness you share with each other, as well as add excitement to everyday life.’’

Another reason complacency can set in is that lovemaking can become formulaic when always happening in the same room. Consider a spontaneous and adventurous dirty weekend away as a way to place firm focus on the physical side of your relationship, away from the usual stresses and distractions of the home.

EMBRACE CUDDLING & KISSING

Intimacy, to a certain extent, revolves around anticipation. Not having enough time, or being too stressed or tired to commit to the physical side of your relationship, can lead to hasty, rushed moments of affection. Instead, try to embrace all aspects of the physical side of things, whether it’s holding hands more regularly, cuddling up on the sofa, or scheduling in time for kissing alone. Naturally, better sex will follow.

What we’re referring to here is sensual touching, the kind that arouses, teases, and causes anticipation. A light brush of your fingertips on their skin or a gentle caress of their neck can give them all sorts of sensations that they’ll want more of, and help bring a new focus to enjoying the experience with your partner without necessarily focusing on any end goal.

Doing so will create a closeness that is only shared between the two of you. If this slow pace appeals, consider investigating the world of tantric sex; a slow, meditative approach which can be super intense and fulfilling.

COMMUNICATE BETTER WITH YOUR LOVER

Talking about sex is not everyone’s cup of tea, particularly in a place as reticent and, whisper it, repressed as the UK. But neglecting to talk about the naughty stuff might hurt your relationship, both physically and as a whole.

We all have different sexual needs and desires that we learn as we grow. Some of us are more open to talking about them than others, which is a shame because one of the easiest ways to improve your sex life is talking about your sexual fantasies with your partner and taking turns to fulfil them.

5 OF THE BEST LUXURY TRAVEL DESTINATIONS FOR 2022

Sure, we could start with the usual spiel about the word ‘luxury’ meaning different things to different people, whether that’s a warm cup of cocoa next to a crackling fire, or a chorus of kumbaya around a, erm, crackling fire…

But today we’re here to talk about luxury as the gaudy gods intended…with all the bells, whistles, pomp and glamour that the term is traditionally associated with. After the 18 or so months we’ve all had, stuck indoors or staycation bound, might it be time to treat yourself to a luxury holiday abroad to herald what is, hopefully a brighter 2022? We certainly think so, and we’re going to spend the next 1000 or so words talking about it, hopefully providing inspiration for next year’s ritziest recesses.

With that in mind, here are 5 of the best luxury travel destinations for 2022.

YACHTS, JETS & SUPERCARS IN MONTE CARLO

Monte Carlo, in the heart of Monaco, is the unashamedly exclusive and ostentatious playground of the rich and famous. And much of the ‘play’ here revolves around transport, with the roads, skies and seas that define Le Rocher serving as the playground.

Perhaps the most luxurious way to travel to Monte Carlo is by the comfort of a private jet, available from nearby cities with both domestic and international airports, such as Nice and Marseilles, which can fly you to your resort or onto the deck of an awaiting superyacht. If you’re budgeting for such a splurge, research private jet charter costs well in advance, as prices can fluctuate wildly. This will allow you to assess one way or return flights and plan accordingly.

Or, why not explore the surrounding French Riviera’s winding roads, which reveal vista after vista of gorgeous scenery at every turn? The road from Monaco to Menton on the French border with Italy is just 10 km north along the coast, or to the south, Cannes is an hour’s drive away.

Of course, if your trip is all about glamour and luxury, you’re going to want to do the coastal drive in a car that’s fit for purpose. Unsurprisingly, Monte Carlo has several dedicated places where you can rent a supercar; Top Car Monaco will rent you a Ferrari 488 GTB for €1’300 a day while Monaco Luxury Car Rentals can sort you out with a Rolls Royce Drophead for €3’200.

Alternatively, you could just spectate on some seriously supercharged cars; after being cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19, the Monte Carlo Grand Prix resumed in 2021, albeit operating at around a third of normal capacity to allow for social distancing. Next year’s event, running from Thursday 26th May to Monday 30th May, promises to be the biggest ever.

NATURAL WONDER IN THE MALDIVES

The archipelagic state of the Maldives, an hour and a half’s flight from India’s Malabar Coast, is as idyllic as it comes. Boasting ultra shallow, crystal clear waters , powdery white sand beaches, and of course, private island resorts with just the right level of seclusion, the Maldives is a refined, sophisticated location for a luxury holiday.

Perhaps the most exclusive of all the resorts is Soneva Jani, which sits on an otherwise uninhabited five-island cluster, surrounded by 5 km of lagoon. Many of the villas here boast slides from their top deck into the Indian Ocean below, and there’s even a private, previously 2 Michelin starred chef onsite and on call to cater to your every hunger pang. Yours for $12’000 a night.

To dive a little deeper than that slide allows, many visit the Maldives specifically for the scuba diving opportunities, with the waters offering incredible visibility and a wide variety of sea life; many luxury resorts with their own on-site diving instructors. From May through November, you’ll see manta rays, whale and hammerhead sharks, sea turtles and a whole host of other amazing sea creatures. Or, you could just stare into the seemingly bottomless bowl of a champagne glass in one of the Maldives’ famous underwater restaurants…

SOPHISTICATED SHOPPING IN SAINT TROPEZ

Our second offering on the famously luxurious French Riviera, Saint Tropez offers a slightly more laid back vibe than Monte Carlo. It is technically still a village, after all, and is a little cheaper than its ostentatious cousin some 133 km up the road.

The shopping options in one of the globe’s most glamorous villages are superb, with Saint Tropez’s tightly woven streets packed with boutique clothes shops and outlets from some of the fashion world’s heaviest hitters.

You won’t have to walk far to spend big here, make no mistake. In the pedestrianised Old Town is where the vast majority of the best shopping opportunities in St. Tropez are found, with the majority of the designer names located on Place des Lices, Rue Gambetta and Rue Allard. Here you’ll find traditional honey and terracotta hued houses hosting the likes of Armani, Dolce and Gabbana, and Rodini.

If you’re keen to pick up some artisan, luxury foods, then be sure to head to Place des Lices Market, which takes place every Tuesday and Saturday morning. In the market, you’ll find incredible pastries, cheeses, charcuterie and bread, ideal for a pit stop before more clothes shopping! Bring your credit card, prices are most definitely premium here.

FINE DINING IN MACAU

Speaking of luxury food, The Vegas of the East, as Macau is sometimes known, boasts one of the most revered restaurant scenes in the world, with all of its 17 Michelin starred restaurants within a five mile radius of each other. If you’re keen for a holiday that gives a concentrated, close-to-clinical dose of haute cuisine, then it’s here you should head.

That said, it isn’t all 18 course, several hundred dollar tasting menus; Macau boasts a rich and complex history with plenty of Portuguese influences, which has led to a fascinating cuisine which blends East and West adeptly.

This explains why perhaps Macau’s most famous edible delight of all is the world famous pastel de nata – those gorgeous, moreish custard tarts. Owing to mass Portuguese migration to Macau in the 1980s, much of the cuisine here is flecked with Iberian influences. Try one at Lord Stow’s Bakery in the Venetian Macao Resort. Delicious!

TAKE A CRUISE IN THE CARIBBEAN

As the motivational speaker Harmon Okinyo put it so eloquently, ‘’in today’s life, luxury is time and space’’. And accordingly, we won’t keep you for another minute.

When you do get the time and space though, check out these 10 IDEAL ports of call on your next Caribbean cruise; a luxury holiday if ever there was one.
