7 Styling Tips For Men’s Aviator Bomber Jackets

A men’s leather jacket is a timeless, seasonless purchase that feels both fun and functional, and stylish yet practical. Considering their durability and flexibility, such jackets also represent a seriously savvy investment; choose the right jacket, treat it with the respect it deserves, and it’ll last you a lifetime.

A subset of the leather jacket umbrella term that’s been making waves in the fashion world recently is the men’s aviator bomber flight jacket. A bit uncomfortable to say, sure, but providing utter comfort – and the utmost style – when worn.

If you’re considering investing in one, then you’re probably wondering just how to wear it to its full potential. Your curiosity has taken you to the right place; here are 7 styling tips for men’s aviator bomber jackets.

What Exactly Is An Aviator Bomber Flight Jacket?

Most people may assume that leather jackets, bomber jackets, aviator jackets, flight jackets and aviator bomber jackets are the same thing. But, no!

Though a whole range of men’s blazers and coats were very much in fashion during the early 20th century, aviator bomber jackets actually hit the market way earlier than customary bomber jackets, which were made specifically for flight pilots in WWI. We’re talking about a time when pilots used to fly planes with open air cockpits, so these jackets were designed to provide them adequate insulation against the bracing weather.

As cockpits became filled with increasing amounts of tech and gadgetry, and more cramped as a result, fashion designers (alongside the US Army Aviation Clothing Board) were forced to reconceptualise the design of bomber jackets to make them more slimline, lightweight and suitable for ever shrinking cockpits during the Second World War.

Soon after that, the appeal of both the functionality and fashion of these bomber jackets left the confines of the cockpit and reached the high street, with men realising just how chic this streamlined style of aviator jacket was, leading designers to further innovate its fit and cut into the modern aviator bomber flight jacket we see today.

In 2022, the jacket is usually designed for men with slimmer builds due to its fitted waistband, front zipper and shallow collar. Some of the world’s biggest brands, including Burberry and Tom Ford, continuously update the designs of their aviator jackets, finessing and refining the iconic clothing item into something truly beautiful.

Beautiful, that is, if you know how to wear it and what to pair it with. We’re here to help with that; here are 6 styling tips for men’s aviator bomber flight jackets.

Choose Solid-Coloured Inners

Just as nifty as a leather jacket, an aviator bomber flight jacket can be paired well with many types of inners. You can opt for cashmere sweaters, cardigans, and woolen high-necks to keep yourself warm in chilly winters, or you can simply go for fitted crew neck t-shirts, polos, or full-sleeves shirts.

More recently, there’s been something of a trend for pairing a men’s oversized t-shirt with a leather jacket, which can work well on a certain (younger) age. Regardless of which inner you select, it’s important to make sure that it’s not sleeveless and too glitzy to wear under a flight jacket.

Another thing to keep in mind is to choose solid colours like white, grey, black, navy, maroon, red, and brown, which serve to pull the whole look together. These colours go well with the most traditional shades that bomber jackets come in, such as camel, beige, black, olive, and navy.

Above all else, it’s aesthetically essential that your top contrasts with the colour of your jacket, with the former ideally several shades lighter than the latter.

Pull Up Dark Bottoms

As for bottoms, you need something that is not too casual nor too formal, such as chinos, khakis, or jeans, to really pull together your look if you’re planning your aviator jacket to be front row and centre. This is primarily because aviator jackets are meant to give off a kind of ruthlessly efficient, military vibe, so anything that’s excessively casual or prohibitively formal can rather dull that aim.

As with your top half, contrast is key here; contrasting but complementary colours are ideal. Light blue jeans with a dark brown aviator jacket is a classic look, whilst we think khaki chinos paired with a black jacket can look even suaver. Loungewear trousers are a big no-no, so make sure you do not kill your look by appearing too sluggish.

Co-Ords/Tracksuits

That said, it’s becoming increasingly popular for matching co-ords or tracksuits to be worn under aviator bomber jackets, particularly on the catwalk. Expect to see this look on a high street near you with increasing regularity soon!

These co-ords or tracksuits maintain the gallant, masculine feel of an aviator bomber jacket, whilst not looking overly fussy. It’s essential to make sure the tracksuit is on point, blemish free, and vibrantly coloured; nope, those grey slacks of yours just won’t do. Instead, a stiff, crisp designer tracksuit is the way to go here, paired with pristine white trainers, of course.

Pick Shoes Thoughtfully

Speaking of trainers, it’s essential that you give considerable thought to your shoe choice when trying to show off your aviator bomber jacket to its full potential.

There are only a few kinds of shoes that go really well with a men’s aviator jacket, so you need to be extra mindful on this one. Simply put, you can’t go for casual sandals or canvas shoes, which look jarring against a jacket of such poise and purpose. Instead, lace-up shoes or trendy slip-ons work well, but as we previously mentioned, the best shoe to pair with an aviator jacket is perhaps a simple but pristine white trainer.

If you’re attending a fairly formal event but can’t bear to be without your aviator jacket, you might want to consider a pair of Oxfords or Derby shoes.

In more casual settings, you can go for moccasins, trainers, sneakers, or boat shoes if it’s about wanting to be a bit laidback. Last but not the least, suede boots like Chelseas or even a pair of classic Timberlands look absolutely fantastic when paired thoughtfully with an aviator jacket.

Invest in Quality and Fit

When it comes to aviator bomber jackets, the difference between a well-made piece and a cheap imitation is immediately apparent—both in how it looks and how it wears over time. While premium brands like Schott NYC and Alpha Industries have built their reputations on authentic military-grade construction, there are excellent options across various price points that deliver both style and substance.

For those seeking luxury craftsmanship, brands like Saint Laurent and Acne Studios offer contemporary takes on the classic silhouette with impeccable tailoring. Mid-range options from companies like Urban Leather Jackets provide genuine leather construction and attention to detail without the designer price tag, making them an excellent choice for style-conscious men who want authenticity and durability. Meanwhile, accessible brands like Zara and AllSaints offer fashion-forward interpretations that capture the aviator aesthetic at more approachable price points.

Regardless of your budget, prioritise proper fit above all else. The jacket should sit comfortably at your natural waistline without being restrictive through the shoulders or chest. Remember, a well-fitted jacket from a mid-tier brand will always look better than an ill-fitting designer piece. Take the time to try on different sizes and cuts—some brands run larger or smaller than others—and don’t hesitate to have minor alterations done by a skilled tailor to achieve that perfect, streamlined silhouette that makes aviator jackets so effortlessly cool.

Accessorising Your Aviator Bomber Jacket

A little decoration goes a long way when accessorising your jacket-led outfit. A baseball cap is a classic choice, whilst beanies also look suitable in the right, outdoorsy setting when worn with a bomber.

Aside from caps and hats, sunglasses (aviators especially, duh!) and nominal jewellery like chains, watches, or simple leather bands also bring a sense of subtle sophistication to aviator bomber jackets. We would caution against heavy jewellery, however, since it tends to clash with a jacket that’s traditionally on the heavy side, too.

And whilst we’re very much speaking in the spirit of aviation, do check out these men’s style tips for the airport. You won’t regret it!

The Best Drinks To Take To A Festival This Summer

Ideal for sipping by the stage this summer

With summer festivals back on the calendar (rejoice!), we just can’t wait to be among like minded people, having a singsong to some live music and perhaps even a cheeky little tipple or two.

What we’re not looking forward to, however, is all that queuing at the bar. Fortunately, many of the UK’s biggest events allow attendees to bring their own booze, as long as it’s not in a glass bottle and you’re not bringing a whole bar along for the weekend.

So, turn the tunes up loud and put the cans, pouches and reusable plastic bottles on ice. To celebrate festival season, we’ve pulled together our best drinks to take to a festival this summer, IDEAL for sipping by the stage this summer.

Ella’s Kitchen Organic Smoothies & Vodka

Ideal for the morning after…

We’ve all been there, waking up in a hot tent with a bad headache and a dry mouth. It’s a feeling that defines Glasto, Reading et al, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

And whilst thinking about it has brought on a strange sense of nostalgia, it’s not a feeling you want lingering for long. The answer? Well, firstly, lots and lots of water, of course. Following that, and as every keen festival-goer will attest, a little hair of the dog is the best way to get back in your groove.

For this DIY creation, you’ll need to head to the children’s aisle of the supermarket. We realise that this is not what Ella and her Kitchen had in mind when designing their amazing smoothies in a pouch, but when you go to a festival, you’ve got to get creative with the liquids you take in.

Of course, any smoothie in a pouch will work, but we’re particularly fond of Ella’s Kitchen 100% organic fruit smoothies. The Red One is a firm favourite; packed with apples, bananas, strawberries, watermelon juice and raspberries, and about as reinvigorating a breakfast as you’ll find at a festival. The Green one, full of apples, kiwis, bananas, pears and white grape juice, is equally replenishing. Your body will be thankful for all the vitamins, and if you use it as a morning mixer and add something a little bit stronger, well, everyone’s a winner…

This will set you back only 79p a pouch or £3.50 for a multipack of 5! Of course, you have to factor in the cost of the bottle of vodka, too.

Bloody Classic

Ideal for an afternoon pick me up…

Let’s face it, tinned cocktails can be disappointing; either too sickly, prone to parching rather than refreshing, or just plain nasty. Not this one, though.

The guys behind Bloody Classic spent years “fine tuning” the classic Bloody Mary, and fine tuned it they have. Lauded by the Evening Standard as the best canned cocktail of 2021 and with rave reviews coming in from the Independent and Telegraph, too, there’s no denying that this little tin is as much the ideal festival companion as a self inflating camping pillow or your mate who always brings a sharing supply of his famous homemade brownies.

The secret is that the Bloody Classic uses 100% natural ingredients, and is expertly blended with with tomato juice, vodka, Amontillado sherry, fresh lemon juice, their own pickle juice, Worcestershire sauce, a dash of soy, and last but not least, TABASCO® Brand Pepper Sauce.

In our eyes, it’s the ideal cocktail for an afternoon pick me up, when your energy levels are dropping but you’ve got your heart set on seeing the session through to the headliner.

Considering a quality cocktail like this will set you back over a tenner in most places, Bloody Classic retailing at £13.00 for a 4, £19.00 for a 6 pack or £36 for a 12 pack represents something of a steal.

Pinkster Gin On Tap

Ideal for sharing…

The price of £99 per box might make you grimace at first. However, split between a group of friends, you’ve actually got yourself one hell of a deal.

What’s more, the flavour of this tipple certainly won’t have you grimacing. Pinkster Gin on Tap is a three litre carton of delightfully refreshing raspberry infused gin, providing over 100 serves per box and containing the equivalent of over four bottles of gin. Think about it, 100 serves at a festival bar would probably cost you upwards of £700…thrifty kings, queens and monarchs arise!

Hand-steeped in fresh raspberries which have been grown in Cambridgeshire, Pinkster Gin makes for a deliciously dry gin, with a hint of fruit and an exceptionally smooth finish. Hey, that makes a glass one of your five-a-day, right?

Pinkster on Tap retails at £99 for 3 litres with free delivery. Find it at pinkstergin.com

El Bandarra Aperitivos

Ideal for afternoon spent in the sunshine (ideally before hitting the paella food stall)…

Bored of Pimms? Us too. Made to be mixed with tonic, El Bandarra offers a refreshing range of natural aperitifs from Barcelona. The range includes a red and white Vermouth and an Al Fresco Aperitivo produced with a blend of Grenache wines, with the addition of Mediterranean botanicals including liquorice, mint, rose and citrus.

Phwoar, that sounds like a bit of alright to us, and a welcome deviation from the UK’s standard festival drinks.

El Bandarra Al Fresco is best served with tonic and a wedge of orange as the garnish for a taste of Barcelona in a bottle! Speaking of the bottle, this tipple is bottled in a reusable bottle made of glass, so you may have to decant this one to take to a festival with you.

Primavera Sound tickets, anyone?

This bottle of sunshine is just £20.99 per 1 litre bottle from El Bandarra

Neck Oil

Ideal for a session in the sunshine…

While we love feeling like we’re drinking a ‘proper pint’ at a festival, those festival beers soon add up financially. What you need is to bring with you an additional stock of session beers, to keep costs down.

Enter Neck Oil. Billed as the leading craft beer brewery Beavertown’s ‘go-to anytime you want a beer, beer’, Neck Oil Beavertown is by far our favourite session beer. It’s light, zingy and easy to drink, and perhaps most important for a festival can, it’s still delicious lukewarm!

A case of 24 330ml cans will set you back £45

beavertownbrewery.co.uk

Lowlander Beer

Ideal for when you need to take a break…

There’s only so much Red Stripe and plastic cups of cider that one can drink at a festival. Honestly, we’ve tried; there’s only so much.

Sometimes, you need a break from all the alcohol, but sipping water at a festival just ain’t quite the same when all your pals are necking those Neck Oils. Enter Lowlander’s Cool Earth lager – a range of no and low alcohol beers brewed with botanicals in The Netherlands.

We’re big fans of their 0.0% Wit Beer, but even better is their 0.3% IPA brewed with mango, cardamom and orange peel. As delicious as anything stronger, in our humble opinion.

Sustainability is at the heart of everything Lowlander do. That 0.00% Wit Beer we mentioned is brewed with reclaimed orange and lemon peel from bars and restaurants in The Netherlands, and we just love it.

Moreover, with every can of Cool Earth Lager sold, Lowlander adds another plant to a seagrass meadow in the Wadden Sea off the coast of The Netherlands, which helps capture carbon 35 times faster than a tropical rainforest. Find out more about the brand at lowlander-beer.com

Witt Beer is £1.99 for 330ml and their IPA well set you back only £2.09 for 330ml from Wise Bartender

How do you keep these drinks cool at a festival? Well, there’s the obvious cool box full of water. Another tip is to fill a plastic, portable washing up basin with water; pop your drinks in and cover with foil blankets, and the reflective properties of the blanket keeps the water cool.

Finding A Job That Speaks To You: Counselling & Therapy As A Career Choice

Trying to find a rewarding career in 2024 can sometimes feel like an insurmountable task. Though they say that we go through three careers in our lifetime, the changing landscape of modern work, from the WFH revolution to increased automation, means that number feels like a pretty big underestimate.

Instead, the plight of the modern day worker is often to be in a state of flux, constantly having to adapt to stay relevant, all while trying to find that elusive ‘meaning’ from their chosen career.

The old adage of “find something you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life” is something we are all striving for. And if you love helping people, all while staying relevant and in demand, then a career in counselling could be for you.

Today, we take a closer look at what it takes to become a counsellor or a therapist, and how to thrive in the role.

What Qualifications Are Needed To Become A Counsellor?

First things first; there are currently no UK laws regarding or regulating counselling and psychotherapy. That said, according to the Counselling Directory, ”guidelines recommend that, in order to practice, counsellors should have completed at least an appropriate diploma, or completed a course that was a minimum of 400 hours therapy training.”

Completing further qualifications is highly recommended. These include:

  • A BSc (Hons) or BA (Hons) in Psychology, which is usually the first step in the process of becoming a Chartered Counselling Psychologist, a job that, unlike counselling, is regulated under the Health and Social Services Professions Act.
  • A postgraduate diploma in counselling, which is usually taught over several years on a part time basis.
  • Accreditation from the BACP’s Individual Counsellor Accreditation or similar professional body, which requires 450 hours of formal training and 450 hours of supervised practice with clients.

Check out the UK government’s National Careers Service for more on the formal routes and requirements of becoming a counsellor.

& What Personality Traits Are Useful To The Role?

On a less technical level, there are certain personality straits that are arguably more suited to success in the profession than others.

First and foremost, a deep professional responsibility is required. You will be dealing with sensitive matters and sometimes clients displaying vulnerable emotions, and it’s imperative that you approach each and every action professionally.

You will also need to be approachable, empathetic, warm, and trustworthy. The counselling setting is one where you encourage the person to open up and discuss their problems although they may be originally reticent to do so. Other traits include being patient, tolerance, sensitivity, and being non-judgemental. Due to the nature of things you may hear you will also have to be discreet.

Another important trait that you may need to think about as a counsellor is humility. Sometimes, it may turn out they you unable to help someone. You have ultimately chosen this career as a means to help people, and not succeeding may get the better of you. The temptation to solve people’s problems for themselves when they cannot see the resolution is something that present itself. In counselling you need to encourage them to solve the problem.

That said, in some cases, a counsellor may need to make recommendations on where else a client should appropriately seek treatment. The ethics of terminations and referrals are explored this report, which is well worth checking out.

Do I Need A Physical Space Or Can I Do This Whole Thing Online?

Though counselling can – and increasingly does – take place online (such as sessions offered on platforms like BetterHelp), over Zoom or an equivalent platform, it’s essential in the early days of your career progression to allow sessions to take place in person. This truly is the best way to learn, and the counsellor-to-client experience is arguably most organic and fruitful when committed face-to-face.

That’s not to say that remote services aren’t effective, but in terms of early practice, you’ll likely learn more comprehensively when with your client in-person.

Though some choose to have their practice at their home, or visit their client’s homes, there are many obvious drawbacks to this approach. Fortunately, you’ll find counselling rooms to rent in the majority of the UK’s other major urban centres.

The National Counselling Society gives a few pointers on keeping safe when in practice, both when at home and in a privately rented counselling room.

If working from home:

  • Don’t advertise to prospective clients that you work from home.
  • Always let someone know who, when and where the session is taking place.
  • Keep your therapy room as professional (and impersonal) as possible.
  • Set up a buddy system.

If working privately in a rented room:

  • Know where the entrances and exits are in relation to your room.
  • Ensure extra vigilance if there is casual access from the street.
  • Find out the occupied hours of your neighbouring rooms.
  • Get familiar with any building-specific security measures.

All that said, there’s plenty to be learned from virtual sessions, too, and sometimes, they might be a necessity for both patient and provider. In Better Help’s useful piece titled ‘How do I find a therapist near me?’, they explain that finding the right therapist involves considering factors such as cost, distance, speciality and insurance coverage, with various paths available including online searches, medical referrals, and word-of-mouth recommendations, whilst those facing barriers to traditional therapy might consider alternatives like sliding-scale providers or online counselling services.

What Are Your Career Options?

When it comes to career options in counselling, you may wish to set up your own practice after you have qualified, or you may want to develop a certain skill set, such as dealing with workplace relationships, where you can help employees deal with common workplace stresses, and looking after their physical and mental well-being so they can work more productively, or couples counselling, which has a interpersonal focus.

Other career options include going down the personal coaching route where you may wish to help people in group scenarios or one on one with general anxiety or stress-related problems. Helping them achieve certain life goals is a very popular method that athletes and performers choose to employ, and so it can be a lucrative prospect if you were able to get into those circles.

Becoming A Therapist

While counselling offers a rewarding career helping individuals navigate their personal challenges, becoming a therapist can provide an even deeper level of engagement and support. Therapists often work with clients over longer periods, addressing more complex psychological issues and employing a broader range of therapeutic techniques.

Extensive Education

To become a therapist in the UK, one typically needs to pursue more extensive education and training compared to counselling. The journey often begins with obtaining a bachelor’s degree in psychology or a related field. Following this, aspiring therapists usually need to complete a master’s degree or a doctorate in clinical psychology, counselling psychology, or psychotherapy. These advanced degrees involve rigorous coursework, research, and supervised clinical practice, ensuring that therapists are well-equipped to handle a wide array of mental health issues.

Supervised Practice

In addition to formal education, therapists must also undergo extensive supervised practice. This period of hands-on training is crucial, as it allows trainees to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings under the guidance of experienced professionals. This phase not only hones their counselling skills but also helps them develop the necessary empathy, patience, and resilience required in the profession.

Greater Responsibility & Risk

One critical aspect of practising is the necessity of liability insurance for therapists. This insurance is essential as it protects therapists from potential legal claims that may arise from their professional practice. Given the sensitive nature of therapy, where clients may disclose deeply personal and sometimes distressing information, having liability insurance provides a safety net, ensuring that therapists can focus on their clients’ well-being without the constant worry of legal repercussions.

Professional Bodies

Therapists also need to be registered with a professional body, such as the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). These organisations set stringent standards for training, ethics, and professional conduct, ensuring that therapists maintain high levels of competence and integrity in their practice. Membership in these bodies often requires ongoing professional development, which helps therapists stay updated with the latest advancements in the field.

The role of a therapist is multifaceted, involving not just individual therapy sessions but also potentially working with groups, families, or couples. Therapists may specialise in various areas such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, or humanistic therapy, each offering different approaches to understanding and treating mental health issues. This specialisation allows therapists to tailor their methods to best meet the needs of their clients, providing more personalised and effective care.

How To Serve Wine At The Correct Temperature To Bring Out Its Best Qualities

As a wine lover there are few things worse than bringing an amazing bottle of wine to a supposed gourmand’s dinner party – hey, perhaps we’ll stop right there…

…Only joking. So, you bring that amazing bottle, before talking up said bottle to your friends, handing the wine to your host, only for them to bring the bottle out later and serve the wine too warm or too cold for anyone to truly enjoy its flavours.

Serving wine at the ideal temperature can significantly enhance its flavours, aromas, and overall enjoyment and knowing which wines to serve at what temperature can help avoid dinner party disasters like the one illustrated above.

Each type of wine has an ideal serving temperature that maximises its characteristics. We’ve put together a comprehensive overview on which wines should be served at what temperature and, most importantly, why.

Sparkling Wines

Champagne, Prosecco, Cava, and Sparkling Rosé:

  • Ideal Temperature: 4-8°C
  • Serving Tips: Chill sparkling wines in the refrigerator or a cold wine fridge for a few hours before serving. If you’re in a hurry, 20-30 minutes in an ice bucket filled with ice and water can achieve the desired temperature. Sparkling wines are best served cold to maintain their effervescence and crispness. A warm sparkling wine will lack crispness although a fine vintage champagne can be served closer to 10°C.

Read: What to look for in the best sparkling wine

White Wines

Light-bodied Whites (e.g., Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Vermentino):

  • Ideal Temperature: 7-10°C
  • Serving Tips: These wines should be well-chilled but not too cold, as excessive chilling can mute their delicate aromas and flavours. Refrigerate for about 2 hours before serving or use an ice bucket for 30 minutes.

Full-bodied Whites (e.g., Chardonnay, Viognier, Marsanne):

  • Ideal Temperature: 10-13°C
  • Serving Tips: A slightly warmer temperature allows the richer textures and complex flavours to shine. Store in the refrigerator for 1.5 hours or an ice bucket for 20 minutes before serving.

Aromatic Whites (e.g., Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Chenin Blanc):

  • Ideal Temperature: 7-10°C
  • Serving Tips: These wines benefit from a temperature that enhances their aromatic profiles without overwhelming the palate. Refrigerate for about 2 hours or use an ice bucket for 30 minutes.

Rosé Wines

Light to Medium-bodied Rosés (e.g., Grenache Rosé, Pinot Noir Rosé):

  • Ideal Temperature: 7-13°C
  • Serving Tips: Similar to white wines, rosés should be chilled but not too cold. Aim for the lower end of the range for lighter styles and the higher end for fuller, more complex rosés. Refrigerate for 1.5 to 2 hours or use an ice bucket for 30 minutes.

Red Wines

Light-bodied Reds (e.g., Beaujolais, Pinot Noir, Gamay):

  • Ideal Temperature: 13-15°C
  • Serving Tips: These wines are best slightly cooler than room temperature. 30 minutes in the refrigerator before serving can achieve the right temperature. This helps to accentuate their fresh fruit flavours and subtle nuances.

Medium-bodied Reds (e.g., Merlot, Barbera, Sangiovese):

  • Ideal Temperature: 15-18°C
  • Serving Tips: Serve just below room temperature to balance the fruit and tannin structure. 15-20 minutes in the refrigerator should suffice.

Full-bodied Reds (e.g., Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah/Shiraz, Malbec):

  • Ideal Temperature: 15-18°C
  • Serving Tips: These robust wines benefit from a slightly cooler than room temperature to soften the tannins and highlight their depth. Refrigerate for about 15 minutes before serving.

Dessert Wines

Sweet Whites (e.g., Sauternes, Ice Wine, Moscato):

  • Ideal Temperature: 4-10°C
  • Serving Tips: Chilling these wines enhances their refreshing qualities and balances the sweetness. Refrigerate for 2 hours or use an ice bucket for 30 minutes.

Sweet Reds (e.g., Brachetto, Recioto):

  • Ideal Temperature: 10-13°C
  • Serving Tips: Slightly cooler temperatures help maintain their freshness and prevent the sweetness from becoming cloying. Refrigerate for 1.5 hours or use an ice bucket for 20 minutes.

Fortified Wines (e.g., Port, Sherry, Madeira):

  • Ideal Temperature: 13-18°C
  • Serving Tips: Serve these wines at a temperature that allows their complex flavours and alcohol content to balance harmoniously. A brief 15-minute chill in the refrigerator is usually sufficient.

Orange Wines

Skin-Contact Whites (e.g., Orange Wine, Amber Wine):

  • Ideal Temperature: 10-13°C
  • Serving Tips: These wines, made from white grapes with extended skin contact, benefit from a slightly cooler temperature to highlight their unique tannic structure and complex flavours. Refrigerate for about 1.5 hours or use an ice bucket for 20 minutes.

Natural Wines

Minimal Intervention Wines (e.g., Natural Wine, Biodynamic Wine):

  • Ideal Temperature: Varies (typically 12-16°C)
  • Serving Tips: Natural wines can be more sensitive to temperature fluctuations due to minimal intervention and lack of preservatives. Aim for a balanced temperature that suits the wine’s style, often slightly cooler than room temperature. Refrigerate for about 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the wine’s body and structure.

The Outliers

Whilst the table above offers a good overview to the ideal serving temperature for wines, like all things in life, there will be exceptions to the general rule.

An exceptionally extracted, bombastic Californian Pinot Noir from a hot year may fair very well at 18°C, whereas a delicate Spätburgunder (also Pinot Noir) from a northerly German winemaking outpost may very well be better slightly chilled down to 10°C.

The ideal service temperature of wine is considering body/alcohol/tannin and robustness of flavour. If your Cinsault is from a warm climate in a hot year then consider serving it at room temperature, if your Shiraz is from the

Additional Tips For Serving Wine

Of course, wine temperature tips don’t only concern degrees celsius. Here are some other things to bear in mind when considering the temperature at which you serve your vino.

Invest In A Wine Fridge Pulling your wine bottles at the ideal temperature from a wine fridge saves time and hassle. If you drink a variety of both red and white wine then a dual zone wine fridge will work best. If you’re a collector of fine red wines, then a wine cabinet that can be set to 12°C, the temperature that most closely matches the conditions of an underground cellar, will be the best way to go.

Consider Room Temperature Variations Adjust chilling times based on the ambient temperature. Warmer rooms may require a bit more chilling time.

Use Ice Buckets For Quick Chilling An ice bucket with water and ice can rapidly bring wine to the desired temperature.

Avoid Over-Chilling Over-chilled wines can lose their flavour and aromatic qualities. Allow some time for the wine to warm slightly if it’s too cold.

Decanting Decanting can help to aerate wines, especially reds, and can be done at the same time as reaching the ideal serving temperature.

Glassware Choose stemware that avoids the hands creating additional warmth with the liquid in the glass. A traditional wine glass with a stem is ideal even if wine beakers are all the rage.

Keep Open Bottles Cool Use a wine cooler or chiller to maintain the temperature of an open bottle throughout your meal.

The Bottom Line

By paying attention to these guidelines, you can ensure that every glass of wine you serve is enjoyed at its best, highlighting its unique characteristics and enhancing the overall tasting experience.

9 Of Summer 2024’s Biggest Tile Trends: From Timeless Terracotta To Moroccan Majesty

As we enter the second half of 2024, the world of interior design is abuzz with anticipation for the latest tile trends, which seem to come alive in summer, when the light hits them just right and the most vibrant styles seem to glow anew.

With homeowners and designers alike eager to show off their best side, tiles are a brilliant way to bring stylish accents into our living spaces. This second half of this year promises a diverse range of tile designs, taking influences from warmer climes and bolder colour palates than we’re perhaps used to here in the UK.

Today, we’re delving into 9 of the biggest tile trends set to dominate Summer 2024. Care to join us?

Terracotta Tiles: A Timeless Classic

Terracotta tiles have long been a staple in Mediterranean-style homes, but 2024’s sunnier months sees them making a major comeback in various design styles. These earthy, warm-toned tiles are perfect for creating an inviting atmosphere both indoors and out, reflecting the light particularly beautifully on those alpenglow mornings and sepia-soaked evenings that the UK climate tends to do so well.

These earthy tiles not only add a touch of sun-kissed allure to admittedly, occasionally drab UK homes and gardens, but they also provide unbeatable heat resistance and temperature regulation. Thanks to their natural, porous composition, terracotta tiles remain cool to the touch during the UK’s increasingly balmy days, offering a welcoming respite for bare feet while preventing indoor environments from overheating. Their tactile nature also chimes rather succinctly with some of our next trending tile choices…

Nature’s Coloured Tiles: Harmony & Welness

In design, we are constantly inspired by the outdorrs and this year will see a collection of palettes that are at one with nature.

When it comes to designing a space that promotes wellness, nature is a crucial element which should be incorporated into the design process at every turn. Welcome some of that natural feel-good factor into your homes by bringing in those blues and greens.

Known as the colour of harmony and balance, green will bring that feeling of peace into any space of your home. It’s also the colour of nature, so adding a few splashes (or licks) of green to your home helps by bringing a bit of the outdoors in.

Alternatively, light shades of pinks, that are unassuming and nurturing remind us of sunrise and sunset. Moreover, this colour brings some seriously feel good energy with it.

Textured Tiles: Depth & Dimension

Textured tiles are set to take centre stage in 2024’s latter half, offering a unique alternative to traditional smooth finishes. From subtle, tangible patterns to bold, three-dimensional designs, textured tiles can add depth and dimension to any space. Ideal for feature walls, shower enclosures, and backsplashes, textured tiles are a must-try trend for those looking to make an impact with their interior design.

This surge in popularity can be attributed to the fact that textured tiles not only breathe life and depth into living spaces with their tactile appeal and striking relief patterns, but also reflect the growing desire for authenticity and connections with nature. Yep, biophilic design is in, and we’re very much here for it.

With environmental issues on the forefront of the public consciousness, there is a growing appreciation for organic, earthy materials and surfaces that bring a sense of serenity and groundedness into our lives. Textured tiles achieve this effect by marrying the functional and aesthetic benefits in a manner that echoes the outdoors and embraces imperfections, embodying a certain Wabi-Sabi philosophy – the elusive beauty of imperfection – at a time when society is craving respite from the polished, overly-curated digital age.

Natural Limestone: Elegance Meets Sustainability

Natural limestone tiles are at the forefront of every interior designer’s lips this year, celebrated for their eco-friendly properties and elegant appearance. Available in a range of neutral shades, these tiles can effortlessly complement any colour scheme, with limestone’s durability and versatility making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, allowing homeowners to create a seamless flow between their living spaces (another key trend this year, incidentally).

We’re particularly enamoured with the limestone tiles at mystonefloor.com, whose texture and natural-light encouraging properties seem to sing in chorus with Summer 2024’s other major tile trends.

Checkerboard Tiles: Bold & Playful Patterns

Checkerboard tiles have been making a statement in 2024 with their bold, eye-catching patterns, and expect this to continue as the year brightens up and our desire to ‘peacock’ increases in tandem.

This timeless design is being reimagined in new and exciting ways, from oversized squares in the bathroom to vibrant colour combinations beyond the usual monochrome chessboard aesthetic.

The bold, retro aesthetic of the checkerboard evokes feelings of nostalgia and craftsmanship, which feels like a sweet kind of relief in the face of an uncertain future and the increasing automation of traditionally creative pursuits.

Moroccan Tiling: Exotic & Intricate Designs

Moroccan tiling has long been admired for its intricate, handcrafted designs and vibrant colours. No wonder, then, that this trend is set to explode this summer.

From mesmerising geometric patterns to elaborate floral motifs, Moroccan tiles are perfect for adding a touch of far-flung flair to any space. The distinct, handcrafted nature of these tiles offers a unique visual experience, infusing spaces with character and charm while seamlessly blending modern design trends with historical artistry.

Mosaic Tiling: Artsy & Sustainable Tiling

There’s been a renewed interest in colourful mosaics this year. Mosaic tiling has been a popular trend in homes for many years, and it continues to be a sought-after choice for homeowners looking to add a unique and personalised touch to their living spaces. This versatile and durable design option offers a wide range of benefits and can be used in various applications, such as floor and wall decoration, backsplashes, and even as art pieces.

One of the main reasons behind the popularity of mosaic tiles is their ability to create visually appealing patterns and designs. With a vast array of shapes, sizes, and materials available, homeowners can experiment with different styles, ranging from classical and organic to industrial and artisanal.

Mosaic tiles can be arranged in geometric layouts, intricate images, or even custom designs using water-jet technology, allowing for endless creative possibilities. Moreover, mosaic tiling is sustainable as environmentally friendly as it can they can be made from recycled materials.

Portuguese Tiling: Artful & Timeless

Portuguese tiling, also known as Azulejos, is another tile trend expected to make (and look like!) waves in Summer 2024. These beautiful blue and white hand-painted tiles are characterised by their intricate patterns and rich azure hues. Perfect for creating a statement wall or backsplash, Portuguese tiles can effortlessly elevate the aesthetic of any room.

Interestingly, Azulejos tiles share some influence with modern Moroccan tiling’s intricate designs. Taking inspiration from the Moors, who ruled parts of the Iberian Peninsula, including Portugal and Spain, the Moorish artistic sensibility and influence brought geometric, arabesque patterns and ceramic tile work to the region, which later evolved into the distinct blue and white glazed style seen in traditional Portuguese Azulejos tiles.

That said, we wouldn’t necessarily suggest mixing these two tiling trends; the visual effect may be more than a little jarring.

Large Format Tiles: Expansive & Minimalist

Large format tiles have been gaining popularity in recent years, and 2024 is no exception. These oversized tiles create a sleek, seamless look that’s perfect for modern, minimalist spaces, helping enhance the visual perception of space in smaller homes, making areas look larger and more expansive, while the minimal grout lines provide a clean, seamless appearance.

On top of that, large format tiles are versatile and low-maintenance, ideal for the busy modern-day homeowner. Available in a variety of materials, including porcelain, ceramic, and natural stone, large format tiles are a versatile option for those looking to achieve a clean, contemporary aesthetic.

The Bottom Line

It’s clear that the world of tile design is more diverse and exciting than ever before. From terracotta and natural limestone to checkerboard and Moroccan tiling, there’s a tile trend to suit every taste and style. Whether you’re planning a home renovation or simply looking for inspiration, be sure to keep these tile trends in mind for a stylish and on-trend living space. We can’t wait to see what you do with this place!

How To Get A Good Night’s Sleep Whilst Managing Allergies

Have your heard about the pollen bomb? If you’re a hay-fever sufferer like us, you’ve probably already been having a pretty tough time, unfortunately, things are about to get a lot worse. From itchy eyes and a runny nose, to sneezing, swollen eyes and headaches, hay fever is the worst.

While hay fever happens in summer, there are many allergies that a person can suffer from, all year round, including pet fur to dust mites. One of the most disruptive consequences of allergies is their effect on sleep. Allergies can lead to insomnia, difficulty falling or staying asleep, increased snoring, and overall poor sleep quality. This lack of restful sleep can exacerbate daytime fatigue, reduce productivity, and negatively affect overall health and well-being. For those who struggle to get a good night’s rest during allergy season or suffer from household allergies year-round, finding effective ways to manage symptoms is crucial.

If you are struggling to get a good night’s rest during allergy season, or if you suffer from household allergies all year-round, Silentnight has shared its expert advice on how to combat your allergy symptoms.

Consider Your Sleeping Position

Sally Bonser, spokesperson for Silentnight, said: “Allergies can impact our daily lives, however one of the worst side effects is disturbed sleep. Sleeping in an upright position can help to alleviate some of the uncomfortable symptoms you may be experiencing such as sinus pain or congestion. By stacking pillows and sleeping against them in a vertical position, gravity will act in your favour and can prevent mucus build up and feelings of discomfort.

Update Your Bedding

Sally adds: “Pillows can often be a magnet for dust mites and bacteria that we can’t see, and so we don’t always realise they might be causing sleep disturbance. As a result of this invisible build up, we recommend changing pillows every two years to maintain good sleep hygiene and prevent allergies being intensified during the warmer months.

“If your bedding is still in good shape but you need a bit of extra support when hay fever season is at its strongest, consider specific anti-allergy bedding. The Silentnight anti-allergy pillows are filled with anti-allergy hollowfibre that actively protect your pillows from bacteria and dust mites to help prevent allergies. The anti-allergy fibres are approved by the British Allergy Foundation, which means they have the ultimate seal of approval. The pillows are also machine washable at 40°C which means you can keep them fresh and clean for longer.”

Close Windows

Sally continues: “Pollen allergies can wreak havoc at night as many people choose to sleep with their windows open during the warmer spring and summer months. Although you may believe that you are helping to create airflow in the room, this actually allows pollen and hay fever aggravating particles to enter the room.“Sleep with windows and doors closed to prevent fresh pollen from getting into your system. A de-humidifier can help to create a fresher air environment, or if the warmth of the room is an issue, consider cooling bedding for a refreshing night’s sleep.

Some Extra Tips

Control Indoor Humidity

  • Use a Dehumidifier: Keep the humidity level in your bedroom between 30-50% to reduce mold and dust mites.
  • Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation in your home, especially in the bathroom and kitchen, to prevent mold growth.

Air Purification

  • HEPA Filters: Use an air purifier with a HEPA filter in your bedroom to capture airborne allergens.
  • Change HVAC Filters: Regularly change the filters in your heating and cooling systems to reduce allergens.

Bathe Before Bed

  • Shower at Night: Shower before bed to remove pollen and other allergens from your skin and hair.

Keep Pets Out of the Bedroom

  • Pet-Free Zone: If you have pets, keep them out of your bedroom to reduce pet dander.

Medication and Treatment

  • Antihistamines: Consider taking an antihistamine before bed, but consult with your doctor first.
  • Nasal Sprays: Use saline nasal sprays or medicated nasal sprays to clear nasal passages.

Maintain a Clean Sleeping Environment

  • No Carpets: If possible, avoid carpets in the bedroom as they can harbor allergens.
  • Curtains and Blinds: Use washable curtains or blinds and clean them regularly.

Avoid Allergens Before Bed

  • Change Clothes: Change your clothes after being outside to avoid bringing allergens into your bedroom.

Diet and Hydration

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your nasal passages moist.
  • Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine: These can disrupt sleep and worsen allergy symptoms.

Consult a Specialist

  • Allergy Testing: See an allergist for testing and personalized treatment options.
  • Immunotherapy: Consider allergy shots or sublingual tablets if recommended by your doctor.

You Can Still Get Sunburn Through A Window: Sun Skincare Myths Discussed

As the summer months roll in, so do the long, sunny days that beckon us outdoors. Whether you’re heading to the beach, enjoying a picnic in the park, or simply spending time in your garden, protecting your skin from the sun’s harsh rays is essential.

When it comes to sun protection, many of us believe we have a solid understanding of what’s necessary to keep our skin safe. However, there are numerous myths and misconceptions that can lead to inadequate protection and increased risk of skin damage.

Myth 1: You Can’t Get Sunburnt Through A Window

The Reality

It’s a common misconception that glass windows block all harmful UV rays. While it’s true that standard glass blocks most UVB rays, which are primarily responsible for sunburn, it does not block UVA rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and contribute to premature ageing and skin cancer. Therefore, you can still suffer skin damage from UVA exposure even when indoors or in a car.

The Science

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, UVA rays account for up to 95% of the UV radiation reaching the Earth’s surface. Unlike UVB rays, UVA rays are not significantly filtered by the atmosphere and can penetrate through clouds and glass.

This means that sitting by a sunny window or driving in a car without UV-protective windows can expose you to harmful UVA radiation.

Myth 2: You Only Need Sunscreen On Sunny Days

The Reality

UV radiation can penetrate through clouds, meaning you can still get sunburnt on overcast days. Over 90% of UV rays can pass through clouds, making it essential to wear sunscreen even when the sun isn’t shining brightly.

The Science

Research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology highlights that UV radiation levels can be high even on cloudy days. The diffuse nature of UV rays means they can scatter and reach the ground, contributing to skin damage. Therefore, it’s crucial to make sunscreen a daily habit, regardless of the weather.

Myth 3: A Base Tan Protects Against Sunburn

The Reality

A tan is a sign of skin damage, not protection. While a base tan might offer a minimal SPF of about 3, it is not sufficient to protect against the harmful effects of UV radiation. Relying on a tan for sun protection can lead to further skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer.

The Science

The British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) states that any change in skin colour due to UV exposure is a sign of damage, going on to say that the vast majority of dermatologists think that Brits have an unhealthy relationship with tanning

Tanning increases the risk of developing skin cancer, including melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. The best way to protect your skin is to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, wear protective clothing, and seek shade.

Myth 4: Darker Skin Doesn’t Need Sunscreen

The Reality

While darker skin has more melanin, which provides some protection against UV radiation, it is not immune to sun damage. People with darker skin can still develop skin cancer, hyperpigmentation, and other UV-related skin issues.

The Science

Studies have shown that skin cancer in people with darker skin is often diagnosed at a later, more dangerous stage. This is partly due to the misconception that they are not at risk. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that everyone, regardless of skin tone, use sunscreen and take other sun protection measures.

Myth 5: Sunscreen Is Only Necessary For Prolonged Outdoor Activities

The Reality

UV exposure accumulates over time, meaning even short periods outdoors can contribute to skin damage. Daily activities such as walking the dog, gardening, or even sitting near a window can expose your skin to harmful UV rays.

The Science

The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasises that cumulative UV exposure is a significant risk factor for skin cancer. Incorporating sunscreen into your daily routine, much like brushing your teeth, can help mitigate this risk. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen and reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating.

Myth 6: Scented Sunscreen Is Less Effective

The Reality

There is a common belief that scented sunscreen is less effective than its unscented counterparts. This myth likely stems from the idea that added fragrances might interfere with the sunscreen’s active ingredients. However, the effectiveness of a sunscreen is determined by its SPF rating and the presence of broad-spectrum protection, not by whether it is scented or unscented.

The Science

Sunscreens, whether scented or unscented, must meet rigorous testing standards to be sold on the market. The SPF rating, which indicates the level of protection against UVB rays, and the broad-spectrum label, which ensures protection against both UVA and UVB rays, are the key indicators of a sunscreen’s effectiveness.

The Bottom Line

Understanding and debunking common sun skincare myths is crucial for effective sun protection. Remember, you can still get sunburnt through a window, and UV radiation can affect your skin even on cloudy days or during short outdoor activities.

By adopting a comprehensive sun protection strategy, including the regular use of sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and seeking shade, you can significantly reduce your risk of skin damage and skin cancer, whether you’re driving to the shops or taking a long, leisurely coastal walk. Stay informed, stay protected, and enjoy the sun safely!

When it comes to being a bride, finding your dream wedding dress is like searching for a needle in a haystack, but with way more tulle and sequins. With countless styles, fabrics, and designers to choose from, the process can quickly become overwhelming.

The traditional white gown has long been the go-to choice for brides. However, modern brides are increasingly seeking unique and personalised alternatives that reflect their style and personality. If you want to break away from tradition and make a statement on your big day, here are some stunning alternative gowns to consider. Grab your bridal squad and get ready to say “yes” to the dress…

Bold Colour Dresses

Who says brides have to wear white? Let’s be real, white isn’t everyone’s colour. While it can look stunning on some, it can also wash out others or not align with your style. Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, and you deserve to feel radiant. If white doesn’t do that for you, why force it? So many other hues can make you shine, from blush pinks and soft blues to bold reds and even dramatic blacks (more on that in a moment).

The beauty of today’s bridal fashion is that there are no rules. Want to wear a vibrant red dress that symbolizes love and passion? Go for it. Dreaming of a soft lavender gown that feels whimsical and unique? Do it. The most important thing is that you feel beautiful and confident. Your wedding day is about celebrating your love story, and your dress should reflect that.

Bridgerton-Inspired Elegance

If you’re looking for inspiration, the latest wedding trends serve up some seriously swoon-worthy dresses. One of the biggest influences this year is the hit series Bridgerton. Think regency-era elegance with a modern twist.

Picture a gown for women with intricate lace details, empire waistlines, and romantic puff sleeves. These dresses come in a variety of colours, from soft pastels to rich jewel tones, allowing you to channel your inner duchess while staying true to your style.

Gothic Barbie: Black Dresses

For the brides who dare to be different, the Gothic Barbie trend is here to slay. Black wedding dresses are no longer just for Halloween – they’re a chic and sophisticated choice for the modern bride. Imagine luxurious fabrics like velvet and satin, adorned with lace, sequins, and intricate beadwork. Complete the look with dramatic makeup, dark floral arrangements, and a moody, candlelit venue. This trend is perfect for those who want to make a bold statement and embrace their inner dark romantic.

Floral Prints and 3D Prints

Floral prints are getting a futuristic upgrade with the rise of 3D printed designs. These gowns are adorned with lifelike flowers that seem to bloom right off the fabric, creating a stunning visual effect. From delicate petals to bold blossoms, these dresses are perfect for spring and summer weddings. And it doesn’t stop at dresses – think veils, headpieces, and even shoes with 3D floral accents. It’s all about bringing a touch of nature’s beauty into your bridal ensemble, making you feel like you’re walking through a garden in full bloom.

Terrific Tulle Gowns and Skirts

Tulle is having a major moment in 2024, and we are here for it! Brides are opting for voluminous skirts and gowns that exude a dreamy, ethereal quality. Layers of tulle create a soft, romantic silhouette that is both timeless and modern. Whether it’s a full ball gown or a sleek A-line dress with a tulle overlay, this fabric adds a touch of whimsy and elegance. And for those who love a bit of drama, detachable overskirts and dramatic veils are the way to go. Customise your look throughout the day and keep everyone guessing!

Short Dress

With so much focus on the train during the all important aisle walk, it’s often forgotten that actually, this is the least important (see: least photographed) part of the dress. And let’s face it, the risk of an embarrassing fall and all that material dragging along the ground and grass can be pretty debilitating.

A short wedding dress is a statement, for sure, but one which can look just as elegant and beautiful as something longer when deployed correctly. In fact, mini dresses are now a trendy alternative to traditional gowns, and we just love it.

Dresses with Feather Trims

Feathers are adding a touch of glamour and playfulness to wedding dresses this year. Feather trims can be found on sleeves, hemlines, and even bodices, creating a look that is both luxurious and fun. This trend is perfect for brides who want to add a bit of texture and movement to their gown. Feathers can be subtle and delicate or bold and dramatic, depending on your personal style. Paired with sleek silhouettes or layered tulle, feather-trimmed dresses are sure to turn heads.

Metallic Dresses

For brides who want to shine on their big day, metallic dresses are a dazzling choice. Gold, silver, and rose gold fabrics are being used to create gowns that shimmer and sparkle with every step. These dresses often feature sequins, beads, and metallic threads woven into the fabric, creating a look that is both glamorous and modern. Metallic dresses are perfect for evening weddings and add a touch of Hollywood glamour to any celebration. Whether you go for subtle metallic accents or a fully metallic gown, you’re guaranteed to dazzle.

4 Dog-Friendly Tips For Your Summer Holiday

Phew! What a decade it’s so far been. You deserve a break…

The holidays are the best times to escape the daily grind and enjoy a well-earned rest. But as pet owners across the UK and beyond will attest, no holiday is complete without the four-legged member(s) of the family coming along for the ride.

Fortunately for pet lovers everywhere, there are countless opportunities for you to have fun with your dog on holiday, with many places both in the UK and abroad welcoming dogs, and some actively encouraging their presence!

A wonderful way for your pup to enjoy a whole host of new sounds, sights and smells, and a load off your mind worrying about the little guy while you’re away… What could be better?

That said, taking your dog on holiday isn’t always a walk in the park. Take these 4 dog-friendly tips for your summer holiday with you, however, and you’ll have the time of your life…

Relax At A Dog-Friendly Hotel

Selecting the right hotel that allows pets is the most important consideration when taking your dog on your family’s summer holidays

The problem here is that some establishments won’t let them in, and others may have strict rules governing how your pet behaves within their premises, both of which make life much harder for dog owners. Regarding your accommodation, it’s essential to check if a pet is permitted at all, as it’s not a given that a hotel, apartment or Airbnb will be pet-friendly. It all depends on the operator’s rules, so do check the fine print before proceeding.

When it comes to finding dog friendly places, we’re big fans of dogfriendlyretreats.com. Josh Williams, who runs the site, tells us that he “always remember(s) the difficulty my parents would have trying to find accommodation accepting dogs. So much so that we often ended up camping instead.”

As such, he set about creating a central website for dog owners to go to and easily search through dog friendly hotels, and the idea for his dog friendly platform was born.

And it seems he was ahead of the curve in doing so; since the pandemic started, there has been a boom in pet-friendly hotel offerings. “More people have realised, over the past few years, that they can take their dog away with them, which obviously they prefer to do, and it can save a significant amount on kennel fees” he explains in the Independent.ie. So go ahead and check out his recommended site for dog-friendly accommodations.

IDEAL Tip: Before starting your trip, you must double-check if your initial choice of hotel is pet-friendly on a more all-encompassing level. Though many places may nominally permit pets, they still don’t allow them to wander around their grounds, for instance.

You’ll also want to check the small print; where can you take your pet to do their business? Are they welcome at the bar and restaurant sections? Can you leave them unattended inside the room? All of this will matter to the success of your stay.

Find Dog Friendly Restaurants

One of the pleasures of going on holiday is eating out at restaurants, and for dog owners,  somewhere their pooch can happily catch crumbs under the table and lap up all the attention they get from other dog lovers is gold.

However, finding decent places that allow dogs are few and far between. Moreover, most dogs suffer from separation anxiety, especially when they’re in a new place. Leaving them at the hotel or cottage, then, is out of the question.

A solution? As Wakefield Express reports, “The new app from Dog Furiendly aims to alleviate the problem, by supporting dog owners to make more travel choices that include the dog. You can search for pubs, bars, cafes, restaurants, chops and more that allow dogs. Moreover The app isn’t just limited to places to go, it also includes vital services like vets, pet shops and dog groomers”.

Result!

IDEAL Tip: If you’re holidaying in London, check out Drake and Morgans. All of their bars, including The Happenstance, The Sipping Room and The Allegory, are dog-friendly. Moreover, they have a dedicated drinks offering especially for furry friends including the ‘Pawsecco’ and ‘Bottom Sniffer Beer’. These non-alcoholic tipples are ideal for any tail-wagging celebration. Yep, we think it’s fair to say that your two-legged friends will feel most welcome here!

Have Fun At Dog-Friendly Beaches

Perhaps not a hugely surprising dog fact, this one, but dogs just love going to lakes, swimming pools, rivers, and the sea because they can have a dip and cool down.

Frolicking around in the sea and on the sand is also great exercise for your four-legged companions… Whats not to love?

Before taking your dog to the beach, you’ll want to first assess if the location is pet-friendly. If the resort allows dogs, you should avoid taking them during the hottest hours because the hot sand can cause pain to their paws and skin, and too much sun exposure isn’t safe.

If you’re not confident to let them socialise with strays, you should consider keeping your dog on a leash to keep them away from these roaming urban dogs and prevent them from getting into a scuffle.

Go Camping

Dogs love a spot of camping, giving them new places to rummage around in and explore.

Before heading out on your trip to a remote camping destination, you should prepare for every possible emergency to ensure your dog’s safety. This involves scheduling a vet appointment so your dog can have the most current vaccinations to prevent them from getting ticks and fleas, and also provide them with an advanced microchip or tracked collar.

You’ll also want to pack standard camping supplies like dog treats, extra towels, a leash, waste bags, their latest photo in case you lose them, and all their vet records and medical information.

Around the campsite, you should monitor the surrounding wildlife, including other animals and plants, to prevent them from engaging with flora and fauna that might cause them harm. Finally, you should bring a sufficient water supply because your dog may require more hydration than usual since they’re in unfamiliar territory.

The Bottom Line

A holiday with your furry friend isn’t always a walk in the park. That said, with a few simple precautionary steps, you can enjoy a wonderful holiday and plenty of bonding time with your beloved four-legged member of the family.

For more on this topic, check out these tips on how to ensure that taking your dog on holiday is a pleasure not a chore. We hope you have a great tip!

What Are The Worst (& Best) Culprits For Staining Your Teeth?

A bright, vibrant smile can boost your self-esteem and leave a significant impression on anyone lucky enough to cross your path. However, to maintain properly pearly whites, you need to be conscious of your diet too. This is because some foods and drinks can cause severe staining and discoloration over time, whereas others can help promote a healthier and whiter smile.

With that in mind, let’s explore the worst (and best) culprits for staining your teeth.

The Worst Food & Drink For Teeth Staining

We hate to start negatively, but here are some food and drink items to avoid if you’re seeking brilliant white teeth…

Coffee & Tea

Tea and coffee both contain a group of compounds called tannins. Tannins are a type of polyphenol and break down in water. They are also found in various other foods and beverages, including wine and some fruits and herbs.

Tannins are responsible for staining because they cause colour compounds to stick to your teeth. When these compounds stick, they can lead to yellowish discoloration or stains. These stains can accumulate over time, especially if you frequently consume beverages like coffee or tea.

In addition to tannins, coffee also contains acids that can wear away at your tooth enamel, exposing the yellowish dentin underneath and making your teeth look more stained.

To help prevent these stains, consider drinking these beverages through a straw, rinsing your mouth with water after drinking, and maintaining good oral hygiene habits (and avoiding bad ones!). Regular professional cleanings can also help remove these stains.

Red Wine

We’ll tell you what else contains tannins; red wine!

Indeed, red wine can stain your teeth due to a combination of its natural colour compounds and its acidity. Here’s a more detailed breakdown:

  • Tannins: Similar to tea and coffee, red wine contains those pesky tannins, too. These are plant-based compounds that tend to stick to the teeth, providing a rough, porous surface for chromogens to latch onto.
  • Chromogens: These are intense, dark-coloured compounds found in red wine that are brought out during the process of vinification. Chromogens tend to bind to your tooth enamel, causing stains.
  • Acidity: Red wine has a relatively high acidity level, which can erode tooth enamel over time. This erosion makes the teeth even more vulnerable to staining because it provides a rougher surface for chromogens and tannins to stick.

It’s worth noting that these factors together result in the more pronounced staining effect observed from red wine. Following up your glass of wine with water or cheese (which neutralises acids and provides a protective coating) can help mitigate these effects.

Coloured Soft Drinks

While most soft drinks have some potential to stain teeth due to their acidity and sugar content, some are more notorious culprits than others. Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Coca Cola & Pepsi: The dark hues from cola drinks can leave a lasting impression on your pearly whites. The distinctive dark chocolate colour of these drinks comes from a complex mix of colouring agents which can bind to the surface of teeth and leave stains, particularly if consumed regularly.
  2. Dark Coloured Sodas: Any soft drink with strong pigmentation – think grape or cherry soda – can potentially stain your teeth. Similar to colas, the colour additives in these drinks also bond with the tooth enamel, staining it over time.
  3. Sports Drinks & Fruit Juices: While not directly staining the teeth, their high acidity can erode the tooth enamel, revealing the darker dentin layer beneath. This can give the teeth a yellowed appearance and increase their susceptibility to staining by other foods and beverages.
  4. Energy Drinks: These don’t just pose a risk through their high sugar content and acidity. Many energy drinks also have robust colours, and regular consumption can lead to staining.

The combination of these drinks’ acidity and dark colour can turn your white teeth to a dull grey or yellow over time.

This erosive damage is cumulative, meaning the more often you consume these beverages, and the longer they stay in contact with your teeth, the greater the potential for harm. The best solution is to limit consumption of soft drinks, rinse your mouth with water after you indulge, or use a straw to reduce contact with your teeth.

Soy Sauce

Soy sauce is infamous for causing stains on teeth due to its high pigmentation and acidic nature.

Soy sauce is a strongly pigmented condiment. Just as it can leave stains on clothing or carpet, it can discolour your teeth. Its dark molecules adhere to the tooth enamel and gradually build up over time to create visible staining, particularly if consumed regularly without adequate dental hygiene.

Apart from its dark colour, soy sauce is also acidic. Acidic foods and drinks tend to erode the tooth enamel, which both makes the teeth more sensitive and creates a roughened surface that colour molecules can readily stick to. This enhances the staining effect.

Berries & Beetroot

Although loaded with antioxidants, dark-coloured berries such as blueberries, blackberries, and cherries can stain your teeth. Perhaps an even worse culprit, however, is beetroot. Both in juice and vegetable form, beetroot’s naturally strong pigmentation can cause staining fairly quickly. Just look at your chopping board after slicing one; now, imagine that staining on your teeth!

Curry Powder

Curry powder can yellow teeth over time due to its deep pigmentation. This is primarily down to turmeric, which seems to stain everyone an unmistakable orangey hue, but other spices, such as coriander seed and cumin, can also contribute.

The Best Foods & Drinks For Your Teeth

On to the good stuff. These guys might help your teeth avoid excessive staining…

Water

Water helps wash away food particles and keeps your saliva levels high. Saliva is your mouth’s best defence against tooth decay because it contains proteins and minerals that counteract acids that can lead to cavities.

Natural Detergents

Though brushing and flossing are the most effective ways to maintain a gleaming smile, certain foods can also naturally clean your teeth and promote their white lustre. Here are a few so-called natural detergents you can incorporate into your diet:

  • Apples: Known as ‘nature’s toothbrush’, chewing apples stimulates your gums and increases saliva flow which rinses away harmful bacteria that promote tooth decay and discoloration.
  • Strawberries: These contain malic acid, a natural astringent that can help remove tooth discoloration.
  • Celery & Carrots: Chewing on these crunchy vegetables stimulates saliva production which is the body’s natural mouth cleanser. The fibrous properties of these vegetables also clean between your teeth.
  • Raw Onions: As surprising as it might seem, raw onions have powerful antibacterial properties that can eliminate bacteria that cause tooth discoloration.
  • Cheese, Milk and Yogurt: Dairy products are high in calcium which strengthens teeth and gums. They also contain casein, a protein that helps to fight tooth decay and promote a healthy smile. Some cheeses, such as aged cheddar, Swiss, and Monterey Jack, can even help buffer the acids in your mouth, stabilising the oral environment by making it more alkaline, and reducing the risk of acid erosion on your teeth.
  • Aside from adding calcium, eating cheese makes your mouth more alkaline, which reduces your chances of tooth decay.
  • Pineapple: This is the only food containing bromelain, an enzyme that is also a natural teeth-whitening ingredient found in many toothpastes.
  • Pears: Their high water content encourages saliva production, which helps to wash food debris away.

Remember, while these foods help, they are not replacements for a regular dental care routine, which remains essential for a radiant, stain-free smile.

Fruit Peels

Rubbing orange or banana peels on your teeth is claimed to lighten stains because of the peels’ acid content.

7 Steps To A Whiter Smile

Of course, none of this matters if you don’t put into practice good daily oral hygiene.

  1. Practise Good Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily to remove plaque buildup.
  2. Use Whitening Toothpaste: Specially formulated whitening toothpastes can help remove surface stains over time.
  3. Regular Professional Cleaning: Schedule regular dental cleanings to remove tartar and surface stains.
  4. Quit Smoking: Tobacco creates stubborn stains and harms your mouth’s ability to fight off infections.
  5. Teeth-Whitening Treatments: Consider professional treatments or over-the-counter products, such as teeth whitening strips, gels, powders and pens, or even a teeth-whitening water flosser for a fresh finish.
  6. Rinse Your Mouth: After eating or drinking, rinse your mouth with water to prevent staining substances from staying in contact with your teeth.
  7. Regular Dental Check-Ups: Regular visits to the dentist can detect any early signs of stained teeth.

The Bottom Line

Managing the colour of your teeth goes hand in hand with maintaining a balanced and conscious diet. Drinking water or brushing your teeth after consuming staining food or drinks can help minimise their staining impact. Remember, while maintaining a white smile is important, so is keeping your mouth and body healthy. So, don’t shy away from healthy coloured foods, adapt your habits, and your teeth will thank you for it. Smile on!

The Most Iconic Sandwiches In Manchester: 9 Of The Best

Firstly, sorry for the use of the word ‘iconic’. We don’t know what came over us.

We’ll tell you what came over us, actually; a comprehensive money shot of oozing cheese, kewpie mayo and melted butter, all after too enthusiastic a bite. Has anyone got a napkin?

Weird introductory statements aside, it feels like the city of Manchester is going through something of a moment in the bread and filling department right now, with the website Eat MCR recently declaring that ‘Manchester’s Golden Age of Sandwich Is Upon Us’

As we wipe down our shirt and order yet another, we can’t help but agree. But in a city more stacked than a DiLusso Deli Company Mustard and Salami, sometimes it can be hard to separate the good from the great in the world of sarnies.

We’ve done the hard work for you, enduring the bread comas and spiking blood sugar, raking over premium sandwich platters and wrestling with well meaning foil sheaths, all to bring you this; our 9 of the best, most iconic sandwiches in Manchester.

The Mac Attack from Northern Soul Grilled Cheese, Northern Quarter

Known for its indulgent grilled cheese sandwiches, Northern Soul has carved a niche for itself in Manchester’s food scene for their harmonious blend of tunes of toasties, both of which, we’re pleased to report, are on point on this sunny stretch of Tib Street.

Their Mac Attack toasted sarnie is without doubt the headliner, an absolute delight featuring gooey mac and cheese sandwiched between thick slices of golden, buttery bread. Presented in a two stack with melted cheese cascading down its cliff face, and topped with a comically large gherkin to cut through all the richness, it’s the ultimate comfort food. Add pulled pork if you’re feeling mental.

And with a soundtrack of old school soul (plus a few Happy Mondays and Oasis tunes, thrown in for good measure), it’s a place that feels like Manchester to its soul (or, should that be ‘to its crusts’?).

The Pork Banh Mi With Pate from Ca Phe Viet, Oldham Road

We’ve waxed lyrical about our love for banh mi so many times that you could stick a wick in our mouth and call it a candle.

At Ca Phe Viet, just outside the ring road on Ancoats’ Oldham Road, you’ll find Manchester’s best version of a banh mi. It’s an unassuming place to approach, with its single alfresco dining table out front and the rest of the seating randomly collected between shelves of Vietnamese larder items (they’ve got premium Phu Quoc fish sauce here, by the way), but this is where the vast majority of the best Vietnamese food in the UK is found, no?

And so it is at Ca Phe Viet, where the banh mi are crisp but light, and the fillings properly proportioned. Our go-to order here is the pork banh mi with pate, a gorgeously balanced number where the homemade, peppery af pate shines through, with slices of char siu pork bringing fat and mouthfeel. House pickles and a piquant, close-to-bracing chilli sauce both help cut through the richness.

They also do a decent pho.

La Regina from Ad Maiora, Kargo Market on The Quays, Salford

First things first; the bread used to make Ad Mairoa’s genuinely iconic (just ask Erling Haaland) isn’t focaccia, as we keep reading. It is, in fact, schiacciata, a crisp but airy Tuscan bread that’s perfectly suited for stacked Italian sandwiches. Which is good news, because that’s exactly what Ad Maiora specialises in.

It’s been quite the meteoric rise for these sandwich slingers. Just a year ago, Sardinian owners Daniela Steri and Enrico Pinna were selling their premium Italian schiacciata sandwiches from their Northern Quarter flat, with folk queuing up around the block for a fix, like a scene played out on the streets of Gomorrah’s Secondigliano.

Image via @AdMaiora

Such was the buzz generated that they’ve now moved into more stable premises in Salford’s Kargo Market. We’re so glad they did, as the impeccable Regina sandwich is more accessible than ever. This one features folds of mortadella, burrata DOP, green pesto, rocket and a pistachio. The crunch of that superb Tuscan bread collapsing into the creamiest of centres, all with a little freshness and verve from the pesto… It really is one of Manchester’s best sandwiches.

You know what? It might simply be one of Manchester’s best eating experiences, period.

The Chip Butty from The Edinburgh Castle, Ancoats

It’s time to hit the pub. But it’s not frothy flagons of ale we’re after (well, not just frothy flagons). Instead, we’re heading to popular Ancoats boozer The Edinburgh Castle in search of chef Shaun Moffat’s immaculate Chip Butty, which he has elevated to something genuinely innovative.

We get it; the humble chip butty isn’t in need of refinement or improving. We agree; it’s perfect just the way it is. But the Edinburgh Castle’s version is just too good to turn down, even if we wouldn’t actually call it a ‘chip butty’.

This indulgent sandwich (really, it’s a burger – let’s call it a ‘beef fat brioche butty burger’) features triple-cooked chips, a beef fat mayonnaise, and raw beef tartare, all held together by a soft brioche bun. For a touch of opulence, it’s topped with a Burford Brown egg yolk Hollandaise which oozes everywhere under the most gentle of compressions. It’s god damn delicious.

Stick around; the whole menu here is brilliantly executed. The Edinburgh Castle has made it into the Good Food Guide and onto this year’s Top 50 Gastropubs list. It sits at 24.

The Chorizo Sandwich from Federal Cafe & Bar, Deansgate

For those seeking a Spanish twist (hey, why not try flamenco?), then Federal Cafe & Bar will have your palate pirouetting with their Chorizo Sandwich.

Blessed with chorizo whose spicy fat has spaffed all over its ciabatta bedding invitingly, melted manchego cheese, a real pokey aioli and caramelised onions, it’s a wildly good sarnie, promising a culinary trip to the Mediterranean without ever having to leave Manchester.

Also excellent was Federal’s recent special sausage sando, a laughably indulgent affair of sausage patty, egg, bacon, cheese, and fed sauce, the latter of which had a pleasingly Big Mac tang. If it’s on, order it.

There are three Federals across the city, but our favourite of the trio is in Spinningfields.

The Philly Cheesesteak from Fat Pat’s, Portland Street

Fat Pat’s has gained plenty of publicity recently for serving what might be the best Philly cheesesteak in Manchester (hell, it might be the only Philly cheesesteak sandwich in Manchester, owing to our myopic vision when it comes to Fat Pat’s).

Though it’s on the pricier side, clocking in at £16, the size of this thing makes it absolutely worth it – a meal for two, to be perfectly honest, which works because it’s presented halved. Crammed into a 10 inch milk roll, thin strips of generously seasoned ribeye bed down with a tangle of caramelised onions, green peppers and loads of melted cheese (we think Fat Pat uses provolone). A few thinly sliced chives are thrown in with your health in mind.

Wow, this is a good sandwich, but one you’ll have to fight through hoards of Instagram documentarians to sample. Oh, and that £16 does get you a complimentary soda or water included in the price. Which, we’ll be frank, you’ll need; this is one salty boi.

The Kroissant Royale from Albert’s Schloss, Peter Street

Over on Peter Street, Albert’s Schloss presents a unique breakfast experience with its standout dish, the Kroissant Royale. This Bavarian-style restaurant and bar is renowned for its lively, apres-ski like atmosphere and indulgent dishes, and the Kroissant Royale is no exception.

Introduced as part of their new Alpine-inspired breakfast menu, which runs seven days a week, from 9am to midday, this dish redefines morning indulgence (and writes off the rest of your day) with its exquisite combination of textures and flavours. A fresh, haus-baked croissant serves as the foundation, its buttery and flaky layers providing the perfect contrast to the sumptuous fillings within.

Those fillings are slow-cooked sweet onions, melted gouda cheese and shallots, all brought together with the richness of a fried Burford Brown egg. If that doesn’t sound quite stacked enough, fear not; you can customise your Kroissant Royale with either smoked back bacon, Schloss’ famous bratwurst, or the vegan-friendly Moving Mountains sausage. It’s bloody gorgeous, this.

The Salt Beef Bagel from Smoak Coffee, Chorlton

If you’re a fan of classic deli sandwiches, Smoak in Chorlton should be on your list. It’s certainly on our list of Manchester’s best sandwiches, all because of their gorgeous salt beef bagel.

Made with hunks of fall-apart brisket brined for up to 30 days, then braised, smoked and sliced, this sandwich is simplicity at its finest. Piled high with sauerkraut, mustard and pickles, it’s a true deli delight. Sure, you’ll have to head south of Old Trafford to find this superb bagel, but it’s well worth the journey.

The Afternoon Tea from The Clink Restaurant, Wilmslow

We end with something a little different. A unique dining experience in Wilmslow, 40 minutes south of Manchester, The Clink Restaurant doesn’t just serve food; it provides hope through rehabilitation.

Situated within the working prison of HMP Styal, The Clink’s meals are cooked and served by the students in training who are working towards gaining their City & Guilds NVQs in Food & Beverage Service, Professional Cookery and Food Hygiene, helping them find meaningful work and a sense of stability once released.

The Clink’s afternoon tea offering (keenly priced at just £21.95 a person) has four nicely made sarnies, scones and sweets. Lovely stuff.

The Bottom Line

Manchester’s sandwich scene is filled to the crust with diverse flavours and culinary creativity. Whether you’re in the mood for an elevated chip butty (not a mood that strikes that often, admittedly) or a Philly cheesesteak, this city has something to offer every sandwich aficionado. Now, excuse us; we need to sleep off this food coma for the next few days…

Paella Pan

Paella is one of those dishes that is tasty, hearty and great for a party (poet, don’t know it, and all of that!). But if you’ve only ever had paella in a restaurant, it’s time to branch out and get yourself a paella pan.

Cooking a traditional paella takes some time and patience, but the results are absolutely worth it. Whether you’re having a party or want something a little different for your Friday night dinner, a paella served in your dedicated pan won’t disappoint.

Really, you can’t make traditional paella without using the correct pan; the name ‘paella’ actually comes from the Valencian for ‘pan’, highlighting both the origins of the dish and the importance of the vessel it’s cooked in.

The shape and size of a correct paella pan are essential for its characteristic finish, too, so if you’re a fan of regional Spanish cuisine, you should certainly consider adding one to your cooking arsenal.

Get ready to make a lot of waffles (and waffle-shaped things!), with your cool new waffle maker.

Rice Cooker

Some Brits seem to struggle with cooking rice. Too much or too little water can leave your rice far from edible, resulting in a sludgy, sticky mess.

A rice cooker is a kitchen gadget that will change your life, cooking your rice perfectly every time and leaving you with fluffy grains that are perfect as the centrepiece for a delicious spread.

But that’s not all! There are a whole load of rice cooker recipes that work similarly to a slow cooker, making the device ideal for making stews, boiling eggs, and of course cooking other grains like barley or quinoa. Oh, and with a little knowhow, you can even start a fermentation project using a rice cooker, taking advantage of the ambient temperature of that ‘keep warm’ feature.

Bread Machine

Who doesn’t love the smell of freshly-baked bread? With your own bread machine, you can get that seductive smell whenever you want!

Bread machines can save a lot of hassle, taking care of the kneading and mixing to produce the perfect dough. You can leave your machine to bake your bread, or take the dough and use it with a mould or whatever plans you have for it.

A bread machine can make a variety of doughs, including pizza dough and cake recipes, making it ideal for people who are short on time and want to produce a high-quality bake without the effort.

High-Quality, Non-Stick Pans

While not strictly a gadget, non-stick pans are a kitchen staple. Made using innovative non-stick technology, investing in some high-quality pans will improve your cooking results and make sure your food comes out great, even with minimal oil.

Non-stick pans need proper care to stop them from becoming ruined. From using wooden or silicone utensils to keeping them away from the dishwasher, if you’re going to invest in some quality non-stick pans, you don’t want to ruin them through carelessness.

The Bottom Line

Having some new goodies to play with can give a little motivation to help you cook more at home, and it will help make things a little easier, too. It’s important to remember that kitchen space can be limited, so you should think carefully about the appliances you buy to make sure you’ll really use them rather than simply stuffing them in the cupboard to gather dust.

With some new kitchen gadgets by your side, you’ll have everything you need to up your cooking game and make some top dishes from the comfort of your own home!

How To Maintain Good Eye Health: 7 Essential Tips

When it comes to protecting your eyes, many people are unsure what to do or how they could make a difference to their own eye health. Your eye health is extremely important and when taking care of your eyes correctly, various eye conditions may be prevented. In order to see clearly and to avoid eye complications or even blindness, living a healthy life really makes a difference, as well as keeping a routine of regular eye examinations with a professional.

With that in mind, here are 7 essential tips on how to maintain good eye health, so you can be sure that your eyes are well cared for.

Get Regular Eye Examinations

Visiting your optician regularly for routine eye examinations will allow for the early detection of diseases that include glaucoma and macular degeneration. Ensuring you have no existing eye concerns, you should be visiting your optician at least every two years. This way any issues with your vision and eye health can be addressed and treated.

An optometrist will give your eye health a thorough examination, addressing any concerns you have as well as determining the health of the underlying eye structure with an OCT scan.

Below are some signs you may need to book an eye examination:

  • You can’t remember the last time you had an eye examination
  • You are experiencing eye pain or frequent headaches from eye strain
  • You are at risk of eye conditions, due to a family history of eye diseases or have diabetes
  • Your vision has been worsening over time

Protect Your Eyes In The Sun

Many enjoy the sun when it decides to appear but there are some important things to keep in mind to help you stay protected from harmful UV rays. We are frequently reminded to wear SPF and protect our skin but often neglect our eyes. By wearing sunglasses with UV protection, you can enjoy the sunshine while protecting your eyes from the UV rays

For those who already wear glasses, you should invest in some prescription sunglasses, too, or consider polarised lenses or transition lenses. Your optician will be able to offer their expert advice when choosing the right option for you.

Be Aware Of Any Warning Signs

If you start to notice any concerns with your eyes or vision, it is very important you take notice of this and seek advice as soon as possible. Some signs to look out for include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Eye strain and frequent headaches
  • Difficulty seeing in low light
  • Frequent flashes of light
  • Red eyes
  • Eye pain
  • Swelling
  • Floaters in the eye

Remove Your Contact Lenses

Contact lenses offer clear vision for those who would rather not wear frames. Despite their simple use, it is crucial that they are worn and taken care of correctly. Very often, opticians will see cases of dry eye in contact lens wearers. To prevent this, irritation, and other eye conditions, ensure you wear your contact lenses according to your optician’s instructions

Maintain A Healthy Diet

To make additional efforts to care for your eye health, eating foods that are rich in vitamins can make a difference. Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, zinc, bilberry, lutein and zeaxanthin are all great for your eyes. These can often be found in foods such as kale, salmon, tuna, nuts, and eggs, as well as in dedicated eye health supplements. Helping to maintain good eye health and reducing your risk of developing eye conditions, particularly those associated with high blood pressure.

Limit Screen Time & Take Regular Breaks

With our increasing reliance on digital devices, it’s crucial to be mindful of screen time and its impact on your eyes. Prolonged exposure to screens can lead to digital eye strain, causing symptoms such as dry eyes, blurred vision, and headaches. To combat this, follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

Additionally, ensure your screen is positioned at arm’s length and slightly below eye level. Consider adjusting the brightness and contrast settings to comfortable levels, and don’t forget to blink frequently to keep your eyes moist. If you work on a computer for extended periods, investing in blue light filtering glasses may also help reduce eye strain.

Stay Properly Hydrated & Get Adequate Sleep

Maintaining proper hydration is essential for overall eye health, as dehydration can contribute to dry eyes and discomfort. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your eyes naturally lubricated. Equally important is getting sufficient sleep, as your eyes need time to rest and repair themselves.

During sleep, your eyes are continuously lubricated, which helps to clear out irritants that may have accumulated during the day. Adults should aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night. Poor sleep can lead to eye twitching, dry eyes, and even blurred vision, so establishing a consistent sleep routine will benefit both your overall health and your vision.

How Millennials Are Using Numerology To Find Their Ideal Partner

Ever open your phone and note with gravitas that the time is 11:11? Do you feel a deep pessimism about sitting in seat 13 on a flight? Did the album 22, A Million mean so much to you?

If any of those happenings chime with you, then you’re not alone; as Grazia reported back in 2018, an increasing number of ‘quasi-spiritual’ millennials are talking about numerology.

Numerology has been around for millenia, but many people are still often unaware of how it supposedly works. In short, it is the belief that there is a mystical relationship between numbers and important (and, sometimes, unimportant) milestones in your life. It is also about studying the significance of numbers in letters, words, and names. Numerology also has close ties to astrology and the paranormal, too.

If this doesn’t sound like your sort of thing, then you know where the back button is. But if you’re curious, intrigued or a firm believer in the power of digits, then you’ve come to the right place.

You’re probably wondering just how you can make numerology work for you? And, as is usually the case, can we presume that ‘work for you’ translates into helping you find love?

If you take the time to understand it and get an idea of how numerology works, some even believe you can use it to help find your perfect match. Just a bit of fun, sure, but you never know, right? Here’s how millennials are using numerology to find their IDEAL partner.

Firstly, Find Your Life Path Number

The first thing that you are going to want to look at is your life path number. If you don’t know how to calculate it, don’t worry; there are plenty of websites online that will enumerate it for you via a simple path life calculator

But if you are keen to figure out the number yourself, you can find this number yourself by adding up all the digits of your birthdate (Y+Y+Y+Y+M+M+D+D). If you get a multi-digit number other than eleven or twenty-two, add up all of the digits.

Still with us? Good.

Keep doing this until you have a single number, and then look up what that means; you might be surprised just how prescient this path number can be! For instance, IDEAL’s path number turned out to be 5, which is suggestive of inquisitiveness, intelligence and communication skills…hey, they might be onto something here you know.

Ideally, you’ll also have to calculate your potential partner’s life path number, too. Admittedly, approaching random strangers and asking them their birthday might be construed as being a little creepy, so perhaps only use these calculations with folk you already know well.

Life Path 1

People whose life path is 1 are what are known as gatherers. They enjoy the company of people and love to be around big groups, immersed in an enthusiastic atmosphere. That said, they don’t like to open up about things too much themselves, and find comfort in a crowd for this reason. This social nature is often appreciated by millennials, who value community and connection.

People with this number will generally have a large circle of friends, however, they tend to have a more close knit, concentrated group, too, of which they are fiercely loyal to. When in a relationship, they will put 100% into the person they are seeing and expect it back. If you aren’t willing to give back to them, it isn’t going to work out.

Perfect Match: 3

Compatible With: 1, 5, and 9

Life Path 2

Those who have a life path number of 2 are sensitive, empathetic and only seek strong and deep relationships and friendships. They will often put other people first and are extremely protective of all of their friends. If you are dating someone who is a 2, your emotions are going to dictate the pace of the relationship.

This aligns with many millennials’ focus on emotional intelligence and meaningful connections.

Perfect Match: 6

Compatible With: 4, 6, and 8

Life Path 3

Those who are on life path 3 are known as the popular and outgoing. They love to be incredibly social and relish being the centre of attention in conversations. If someone is a 3, they can easily seduce you and win you over. People who are 3’s are also not afraid of challenges, especially in love. They are accepting of long-distance relationships and will do what is necessary to make them work.

This trait is often seen in millennials, who enjoy engaging in dynamic social environments.

Perfect Match: 6

Compatible With: 1, 7, and 8

Life Path 4

Number 4s are organised in their working life and their love life. They want to avoid drama, complication and tend to value clear communication. Though do enjoy some excitement, they don’t want to be the ones who plan it. Therefore, you are going to have to enjoy being in control if you are dating them.

This pragmatic approach is appreciated by millennials, who often seek stability and transparency in their relationships.

Perfect Match: 6

Compatible With: 2, 4, and 8

Life Path 5

It’s us! 5s are proud sapiosexuals and are drawn to intelligent partners first and foremost. While your looks will also play a role, they are mainly interested in who you are as a person, your thoughts and your ambitions. These people want someone who is busy and driven, but even more importantly, someone who is able to engage in deep conversation.

This preference for intellectual connection is often seen among millennials, who value meaningful and stimulating conversations.

Perfect Match: 9

Compatible With: 1, 5, and 8

Life Path 6

If you are under life path 6, you are generally a very easy-going person who doesn’t take life too seriously. You enjoy going with the flow and being spontaneous and, generally, it takes a lot to get you riled up. People who are on this path will avoid confrontation and tend to steer away from deep, immersive conversations and interactions.

This carefree attitude is common among millennials, who often value experiences over material possessions.

Perfect Match: 3

Life Path 7

People in this life path are true romantics and have had dreams of their ideal wedding day since they were young. When it comes to a relationship, they seek perfection and, at times, can be picky. That being said, when a number 7 finds a partner, they consider it a lifelong relationship. As such, they are faithful and loyal.

This idealistic view of love is something many millennials can relate to, as they often seek deep, meaningful partnerships.

Perfect Match: 2

Compatible With: 3, 5, and 9

Life Path 8

Speaking of faithful companions, those on a life path of number 8 will be there for you come rain or shine. This loyalty and dedication are qualities that resonate with millennials, who value trust and reliability in their relationships.

Because of this, they can sometimes come across as needy, and expect your undivided attention. When it comes to planning, they like to be in charge as they don’t want anything unexpected to happen, and don’t exactly savour spontaneity, to put it mildly.

Should you quarrel with a life path 8, they aren’t stubborn, and will work through problems you experience as a couple in a measured, diplomatic way.

Perfect Match: 8

Compatible With: 2, 3, and 6

Life Path 9

These are the people who want to continue doing their own thing, even if they are in a relationship. Independence is important for them and can sometimes be misconstrued as disloyalty. This independent streak is often seen in millennials, who value personal growth and freedom.

A person on this life path might have trouble being faithful as they can be tempted to cheat, especially if they are not fully interested in their current partner. That said, their independent nature can be incredibly attractive.

Perfect Match: 3

Compatible With: 2, 5, and 7

The Bottom Line

Whilst this is only intended as a bit of fun, and shouldn’t be used as genuine relationship or life advice, numerology has been used since ancient times to guide people’s decisions, particularly in their love lives. Perhaps there’s some truth to it, after all?

10 Key Skills Every Business Manager Should Have

The ol’ career ladder. Are you looking to climb it for financial or fulfillment reasons? Well, what would you say if we told you there’s a role where those two roles are not mutually exclusive? If you’re anything like us, your ears are now pricked and purposeful, waiting to hear more.

Well, there is such a role, one which combines the lucrative with people skills, interaction and personal growth. To succeed, you’re going to need several job specific skills in your arsenal, and these are those; our 10 key skills every business manager should have.

Strategic Thinking

High on the list of must-have skills for business managers is strategic thinking. This pertains to the ability to understand the broader business landscape, envision the long-term future, and formulate a comprehensive strategy of recruitment, training and delivering that manages to marry both. In essence, the manager should think like a chess player, always anticipating the next move and the subsequent ripple effects.

Communication

Management, at least the successful kind, is all about people, make no mistake. That is the definition of the role; to handle the various needs of employees, to recognise their unique skill sets and to get the best out of them.

Communication, then, is king; your door should always be open to those you ‘manage’, you should give off an approachable yet authoritative air, and the opportunity for dialogue between you and staff should be ever present.

Though clipped emails and monosyllabic phone exchanges certainly have their place when time is of the essence and flowery paragraphs will only impede productivity, face-to-face, clear communication is still the most important tool a leader has in their arsenal. This approach will give you the tools to motivate your staff most effectively.

Yep, if there was one defining aspect of how to become a successful business manager, it would be communication.

Problem Solving

The business world is fraught with challenges and obstacles at every turn. It is the manager’s prerogative to not just react to these problems but to proactively ideate and implement robust solutions. This requires a keen analytical mind, the ability for lateral thinking, and practical application.

A business manager is nothing if not a firefighter. In smaller businesses, the buck stops with this role, and in larger ones, whole departments depend on his or her decision making. Since you’ll be supervising and optimising the work of employees and the company’s operations, bumps in the road are inevitable. It’s the business manager’s job to find workable solutions to these issues through a process of analytics and evaluation, always with the goal of business growth driving things forward.

Organisational Awareness

In a larger organisation, it’s vital that the business manager is well versed and pitch perfect on the structure of the company and its collective goals, since it’s their role to find the clearest path to achieving these goals.

Via communication with other managers and employees, and often in writing and redefining an ongoing company mission statement, an all encompassing view of the soul of the organisation is achieved. No one should know the inner workings of a business like the business manager.

Foresight

A business manager is both constantly evaluating and predicting; looking back at past mistakes and successes in order to devise new and innovative plans for future progress. And this ability to map out company prosperity going forward isn’t only defined by financial gains; the business manager should take as much pride in mapping out personal development and breakthroughs in individual employees and the harmony of the team, as a whole. Again, this is only fully realised through expert motivation, communication, nurturing and mentoring.

Financial Acumen

A business manager doesn’t need to be a chartered accountant but understanding the basic principles of accounting, budgeting, and financial planning is imperative. This skill enables them to make informed business decisions, contributing significantly to the company’s financial health.

Delegation

Effective delegation is a crucial skill for any business manager. It involves assigning tasks to the right team members based on their strengths and expertise, thereby ensuring that projects are completed efficiently and to a high standard. Delegation not only helps in managing workload but also empowers employees, fostering a sense of trust and responsibility. For those looking to enhance their delegation skills, line management courses can be particularly beneficial, providing structured learning and practical strategies.

Time Management

Time management is another essential skill for business managers. With numerous responsibilities and deadlines, the ability to prioritise tasks and manage time effectively is paramount. This skill ensures that important tasks are completed on time, reducing stress and increasing productivity. Good time management also allows managers to allocate time for strategic planning and personal development, contributing to overall business success.

Emotional Intelligence

Managing people involves understanding them, and that’s where emotional intelligence comes into play. A manager with high emotional intelligence can recognise emotions (their own and others’), empathise with their team members, handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and cultivate a harmonious work environment.

Adaptability

Finally, and since the business manager represents the company’s ‘all seeing eye’ in terms of staff and operations, it’s often necessary (and expected) that the role involves having to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty.

Employees aren’t often inspired by someone yelling from the sidelines, that’s for sure. Instead, a knowledge of each and every role within the business, and a willingness to understand and engage with those roles, is required.

Being flexible and adaptable will breed loyalty, encourage better workplace contentment, and, ultimately, make your office a more enjoyable place to work.
