The Ideal Shoe Care Guide For Travellers

0

As the American actor Laura Marano once so sagely said, “the best way to get to know the place you are travelling in is to walk around… and the best way to walk around is with comfortable shoes!”.

We couldn’t agree more.

Here at IDEAL, we think that investing in the right pair of travel shoes is as essential to the success of a freewheelin’, spontaneous travel adventure as remembering to pack your passport.

Because a holiday spent in the wrong shoes is also one where precious minutes are wasted struggling at airport security, suffering from a bloody blister or ankle injury, and generally feeling a little downtrodden whenever you’re treading. And no one wants that…

It’s worth spending a little money on some comfortable shoes for your trip, then. You’ll also want to look after those new travel shoes, to ensure you get maximum longevity and durability from them. Enter our IDEAL shoe care guide for travellers…

Protect & Clean Your Shoes Before You Go

Shoes can take one hell of a beating when you travel, and get grubby fast. One of the best things you can do to any pair of shoes before you go on your travels is to spray them with a protectant. The best shoe protector sprays safeguard your kicks from the effects of the natural elements, come rain or shine, and are essential for a smoothly run (or should that be ‘walked’?) holiday.

If you’re going somewhere rainy, a water resistant protectant is an absolute must for keeping shoes clean and free from water damage. If you’re off somewhere hot, then be sure to find a protectant that safeguards against fabric-fading UV rays, especially useful for leather shoes where hot, direct sunlight can also cause severe drying that may even lead to cracking. Protecting your shoes before they are exposed to the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun will make a huge difference.

Whether you’re looking for protection from water, stains, or UV rays, there are lots of different sprays out there. However, be sure to choose a stain repellent formulated for your particular type of shoe material, otherwise you could end up ruining them before your trip has even begun.

Also, be mindful of the setting time of the spray you buy; sprays can take anywhere from minutes to days to set. Oh, and some sprays require more frequent reapplication – when travelling around with your mind on sightseeing, street eats and catching some culture, you’ll probably appreciate a long lasting spray that you don’t keep having to top up.

Bring A Travel Shoe Care Kit With You

All that said, a simple spray may not be enough – and we speak from bitter experience. If you truly want to keep your shoes in tip top condition on the road, then you’ll need a travel shoe care kit.

There are lots of pre-made travel care kits out there. But your best bet is to build your own with the specific shoes you’re travelling with in mind.

That said, no matter what type of shoes you bring, a cleaning brush is a must. We’re big fans of Boot Buddy, which is designed to clean a whole variety of different shoe types without damaging them, including white leather trainers, notoriously difficult to clean properly. The brush even managed to convince three investors on Dragon’s Den, with Peter Jones, Deborah Meadan and Touker Suleyman, to part with £60’000 of their ‘hard-earned’ cash, which is no mean feat.

The brush is arguably most useful if you’re planning on going hiking or trekking, as it’s fantastic for cleaning hiking boots, helping to prolong the lifespan of your footwear even if it’s been facing the most challenging of conditions.

Speaking of white trainers, here at IDEAL we always bring a pair of kicks with us when we travel; being a versatile shoe, they pretty much go with every outfit, which is especially useful when luggage space is tight. We do recommend packing a sneaker whitener though, ideally one which uses a whitening agent to help restore whiteness to leather, vinyl and canvas sport.

Start A New Habit

After a long day of traipsing around a new city or exploring dusty ancient ruins, your shoes can get pretty filthy. Dirty shoes can be full of sweat and dirt, making them hospitable for bacterial and fungal growth (nice).

If you want to avoid a trip to the local pharmacy to treat fungal infection, it’s a good idea to get into the habit of cleaning your shoes before you put them on, helping to prolong the lifespan of your shoes in the process.

Also, consider some bamboo charcoal deodoriser pouches for your shoes. Charcoal is one of the most powerful natural deodorisers there is, known for its ability to absorb and neutralise odours and moisture.

How do they work? Well, charcoal pouches contain millions of pores that absorb humidity like a sponge, stopping bad smells, bacteria, mould and mildew in their tracks. They are also an environmentally friendly alternative to chemicals and sprays. What’s not to love?

Rotate Your Shoes

We’re told that we shouldn’t wear the same shoes every day otherwise they’ll warp and lose their shape. When we wear shoes, the material absorbs the sweat from our feet and if you wear them day in, day out. They don’t have time to dry out which means they will lose their shape fast, not to mention stink. You don’t want to be that guy who takes off their smelly shoes on a plane and causes a wave of passengers to suddenly don their masks…

Just us? Anyway, wearing different shoes is good for your feet and ankles, too, helping the muscles, tendons and ligaments of your feet and ankles to stay active and on their toes, as it were, leading to less habitual wear and tear, too.

This get’s a bit tricky if you’re only travelling with a couple of pairs. Most globetrotters swear by the ‘3 pairs of shoes’ rule; this is to pack two pairs of functional and comfortable shoes, and one pair that’s a little more dressier; not all travel days call for comfort-first shoes, after all.

Should you pledge allegiance to the power of three, try to wear one pair of shoes in the morning and another in the afternoon or evening to give each a breather. Moisture wicking socks are also a game-changer for travellers, helping your feet stay dry and prolonging the lifespan of your shoes, too.

Elastic shoelaces are a smart move, too, as they’re more durable than your usual laces and tend to be easier to clean. It’s all in the details, after all!

Packing Your Shoes

We know what you’re thinking – get some plastic shopping bags from under the sink, stuff your shoes in there, and you’re good to go.

However, we’ve all been there when the plastic bag breaks and accumulated dirt from our shoes rubs off onto our clothes in the suitcase .

Or, perhaps you’ve never thought twice about tossing your shoes in your suitcase with the rest of your clothes? In which case, we especially urge you to consider the travel shoe bag, designed with the single aim of keeping your shoes separate from your belongings.

Unlike a flimsy plastic bag, they ensure that dirty soles are kept away from your clothes, and can also help protect your shoes from scuffs, scrapes and that inevitable shampoo or sunscreen spill in your suitcase. They also make for especially efficient packing when space is at a premium. Plus, you can grab them and just pop them in your hotel wardrobe, making unpacking a breeze

A final word to the wise; make sure your shoes are dry before you pack them in your suitcase, as packing dirty shoes can lead to mould and mildew. A festering suitcase or backpack can put a dampener on your free-spirited travelling adventure pretty sharpish!

Frustrated By Clutter & A Lack Of Space At Home? Here’s What To Do About It

Be honest; you would write to your local MP if the road leading to your house was blocked with rubbish, right? You would call your local plumber if your toilet was blocked, too, and you’d certainly seek medical help if your arteries were clogged.

Similarly, an intervention is called for when your home gets so cluttered that you’re found wanting for space and comfort.

The issues caused by a cluttered home are myriad. Not only does clutter make it difficult for you to enjoy your home, both physically and physiologically, but in extreme circumstances, it also increases the chances of rodents, flies and other unwanted visitors infesting your house.

Don’t give those guests places to hide or yourself stress and distraction from all that ‘stuff’ blocking clear passage through your home. Instead, check out these solutions to clutter and a lack of space.

Set Yourself Goals

Decluttering isn’t easy. It takes time and can be physically and emotionally demanding.

But it is worth it.

To make things easier, before you get started you need to sit down and work out just how you intend to declutter, and how long you think that it will take. Planning your project and setting yourself a timeline will make decluttering a lot less stressful; this isn’t something that should be approached lightly or haphazardly.

The first thing that you need to do is to create a map of all of the rooms in your home that need to be decluttered. Once you have done this you can then grade each room according to the severity of the clutter found there. The rooms that are most cluttered should be tackled first.

When you do start decluttering, make sure that you only do one room at a time. If you try to do more than this, you will burn yourself out and lose interest in the project.

Once you have identified all of the areas and prioritised them according to severity, you can then go ahead and set yourself completion dates for each stage in your home’s clean-up.

Make sure that you set yourself realistic timelines, ensuring your decluttering project can be scheduled around your other commitments; you wouldn’t want to clutter up your calendar at this stage, after all.

With the sentimentality involved in ‘stuff’, and everyone’s tendency to hoard to some degree, you might also want to consider asking your friends or loved ones for help. Having a second opinion, ideally from someone not emotionally invested in your clutter, can help you be ruthless and clinical in your approach.

Sort, Strategise & Streamline

You need to create a system by which you’ll sort your home’s clutter. The reason for this is so that you do not end up throwing things away that you want to keep. A sorting system is easy to create and shouldn’t take a lot of time or effort to implement.

You should sort items into four categories:

  • Daily items are items you use (or will use) on an almost daily basis. Every time you come across something that fits into this category put it into a storage container and move it into a dedicated room. You could also mark it with coloured tape.
  • Donations are a category that, as the name suggests, will be donated either to charity or to friends and family. The items in this category should still be usable. You can’t donate broken or useless items. You should also include items that are going to be sold in this category.
  • Storage should include items that you aren’t going to use every day, but that you want to keep. Make sure that you label this category’s boxes properly so that they don’t get thrown away.
  • Rubbish is a category of item that is going to be thrown away, regardless of how useful it might be to anyone. This could include items that were given to you by people to whom you no longer speak – or really anything that you just want to get rid of. If something does still have life left in it though, you might want to consider giving it away to charity and recategorising it. Throwing away things that can still be used is, simply put, selfish and bad for the environment.

Removing Clutter By Donating, Recycling & Selling

As we mentioned earlier, donating your used items is one of the most effective way of decluttering your property. This is because you don’t have to worry about contributing to landfill or hiring a skip; you can just put it in a bag and donate to a charity shop.

In addition to donating, you can also sell things that are no longer useful. Selling items that aren’t useful anymore is a great way of making a little extra money while ridding yourself of unnecessary junk.

An effective way of decluttering is to hold or attend a carboot sale, or you could use online apps such as Depop, Vinted, eBay, Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace.

If you come across items that can be recycled, then you should definitely do this. Recycling is a good way of extending the life of objects that were created at a detriment to the environment, reducing the demand for further production of those items in the future.

Proper Disposal Of Waste

Of course, this streamlined, minimalist, breathin’ easy and thinkin’ clearly approach to life is somewhat compromised if you don’t dispose of the items in your ‘rubbish’ column respectfully and responsibly.

As the disposal experts at JustHire Tyne and Wear tell us, skip hire is a great option if you’re planning to get rid of large amounts of waste. Skips come in different sizes and can be hired for short or long periods of time, depending on your needs. They are easy to fill up with rubbish, and once they are full, the skip hire company will take care of picking them up and disposing of them properly.

The main disadvantage of skip hire is that you have to pay for the whole skip even if only a portion gets filled with rubbish. Additionally, you may need special permits from your local council in order to leave them outside your property for any length of time. Plus, some items such as hazardous materials cannot be disposed of in skips due to environmental regulations. Do your due diligence regarding the regulations of household waste disposal so you don’t fall foul of the law.

Aside from skip hire, other options include:

  • Taking your waste to a local household waste and recycling centre
  • Arranging collection of any large waste items (such as an old sofa) through the local council
  • Taking your waste to a permitted private waste site

Storage Smarts

Finally, and perhaps most effectively, consider investing in a storage locker. A storage locker not only protects your property from pests and damage but also ensures that it cannot be stolen. Storage lockers are best for long-term storage, of course, with the various restrictions put on regular access.

The Bottom Line

Though the ‘Queen of Clean’ Marie Kondo may have recently rescinded on some of her commitments, saying she had ‘kind of given up’ on tidying at home, there are some instances where a similar giving up is a luxury.

Should clutter be blighting your life, clarity of thought, and focus, then there are certainly ways you can address the issue.

Don’t let things stack up. Instead, tackle them head on and enjoy a clearer, clutter-free life in the process!

Helping You See More Clearly: Prescription Glasses Terminology Explained

0

Didn’t it use to be so simple? Cover one eye, read a board a few feet away and get given some glasses. Perhaps the only jargon you’d have to be versed in was ‘short’ and ‘long’ sighted, and off on your way you went.

Modern times have changed all that, with technology both improving the experience of eye examination but also presenting new challenges relating to terminology. Not only that, but modern threats to our eyesight stemming from technology are also complicating matters.

Indeed, to the untrained, squinting eye, a prescription can look very confusing, with different numbers and abbreviated phrases, and all sorts of impenetrable lingo. If you’ve recently been to see your optician and have been told you need to wear prescription glasses, and you’re not sure what to make of your the following paperwork, then we’re here to help, with this; our IDEAL guide prescription glasses terminology.

OD & OS

One of the first things you may notice on your prescription are the letters ‘OD’ and ‘OS’. They are abbreviations for the Latin terms for right eye and left eye; oculus dexter and oculus sinister, respectively. This is traditional for glasses prescriptions, in terms of single vision lenses, reading glasses and sunglasses, although some opticians may modernise it and simply use ‘RE’ and ‘LE’ for right eye and left eye; keep an eye, or both, out for each variation equally.

To add to the confusion, in some cases, you may notice ‘OU’ on your prescription. This is an abbreviation for the Latin oculus uterque, which means both eyes. When you’re negotiating prescription glasses online, you may well need these terms in your armoury.

Rawpixel sunglasses

Other Abbreviations

Your prescription will likely include further abbreviations and terms relating to the condition of your vision and the type of glasses you need:

Sphere (SPH): The sphere value on your prescription refers to the amount of lens power. This is measured in dioptres, and will be prescribed to correct short or long-sightedness. If the number displayed under the sphere value has a minus sign, it means you are short-sighted. If the number has a plus sign, you are long-sighted.

Cylinder (CYL): This measurement is related to astigmatism, a common though not serious cause of blurry vision which refers to the shape of your eye’s natural curve, and indicates the amount of lens power for this type of refractive error. If there is nothing written in this column, you have no astigmatism; or it is so slight that is it not necessary to correct with prescription glasses. The cylinder power will always follow sphere power in your prescription.

Axis: The axis is defined with a number from 1 to 180, and denotes the direction of your astigmatism measured in degrees.

Additional Power For Presbyopia

As you get older, you might notice ‘Add’ on your prescription. This is the added magnifying power required for the bottom part of multifocal lenses, in order to correct presbyopia. The number in this section of your prescription is always a ‘plus’ power.

It generally ranges from +0.75 to +3.00 D, with the higher number denoting a stronger prescription, and is the same for both eyes. Fortunately, it’s not a number you need to understand in detail, unless you’re a stat collector, of course.

The Importance Of Getting Your Prescription Right

Without the correct prescription, you may be putting tour eye health and the accuracy of your eyesight at risk. Because of this, it’s vital to get regular eye examinations to ensure your prescription is accurate.

You should make booking an eye examination a priority if you’re experiencing any of the following:

  • You can’t remember the last time you had an eye examination
  • You are experiencing eye pain or frequent headaches from eye strain
  • You are at risk of eye conditions, due to a family history of eye diseases or have diabetes
  • Your vision has been worsening over time

You should also be aware of any warning signs of emergent eye-related issues. These include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Eye strain and frequent headaches
  • Difficulty seeing in low light
  • Frequent flashes of light
  • Red eyes
  • Eye pain
  • Swelling
  • Floaters in the eye

And with that, we hope that you can now see through some of the jargon (or more accurately, technical terminology) surrounding prescription glasses.

6 Of The World’s Most Romantic Places To Propose In 2023

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner – and with it, an influx of marriage proposals. Perhaps unsurprisingly, February 14th is comfortably the UK’s most popular date for popping the question, with upwards of half of all marriage proposals taking place on this day.

With just a few days to go, now (or, let’s be honest, a few weeks ago) is the perfect time to start considering where, when and how you’ll be getting down on one knee. Don’t worry if this all feels a little ‘last minute’; the places we’ve chosen don’t necessarily require any advance booking or special planning. Instead, a little romance and a lot of imagination goes a long way!

Today we’re considering 6 of the most romantic places in the world to propose in 2023, helping you make sure this super special day is memorable for both you and your partner.

BOW BRIDGE, CENTRAL PARK, NEW YORK CITY

There’s nothing more in chime with the world’s most beloved rom-coms than getting engaged in the Big Apple. Actually, there is; getting engaged in Central Park, surrounded by the birds and the bees (and the squirrels!).

If you want to make your proposal memorable (which, since you’re here, we assume you do) Bow Bridge could be the perfect location. As one of the most iconic features of Central Park, and with the rowboat filled lake and the Loeb Boathouse as a backdrop, it’s no wonder why so many soon-to-be wedded couples choose to cross the pond (and Central Park Lake!) to pop the question.

IN THE EIFFEL DELUXE SUITE OF THE HOTEL PARTICULIER MONTMARTRE, PARIS

Veux-tu te marier avec moi? Je suis à toi!

If you want to give your partner the opportunity to relive the scenes of Netflix’s Emily In Paris, then proposing in the deluxe suite of the Hotel Particulier in Paris could be the most perfect proposal out there.

The hotel itself sits in the atmospheric, utterly romantic Montmartre district, famous for its cobbled streets, pastel-hued houses, an intimate charm and its proximity to Sacré Coeur. Inside, and accessible only by private staircase, is the Eiffel Deluxe Suite, a penthouse boasting a glass dome roof and incredible views of Paris and the Eiffel Tower.

We couldn’t think of a better place to say “Je fais!”.

As an equally romantic alternative, consider the Hotel Jules et Jim, in the trendy Marais district. Check out our review of the hotel here.

THE SHARD, LONDON

Cue jokes about taking your partner up the Shard…

As one of the world’s greatest cosmopolitan cities, London is a wonderful place to pop the question, ideally overlooking the hustle, bustle and buzz of the place from on high.

Whilst it’s tough to narrow down the ideal places to propose in London, The Shard has got to be up there (quite literally), offering breathtaking panoramic views that can be enjoyed both day and night.

The unique setting makes for the perfect atmosphere to ask for your lover’s hand in marriage, enjoying the sparkling lights of the big city and the romantic effect such views have. You can actually book a Shard proposal package with either The Proposers or The View from The Shard. Both offer personalised packages including finding you a private area to pop the question, organising a photographer, and taking care of any other logistical concerns you may have, too. Unsurprisingly, such a service is going to cost you; prices start in the region of £1000.

Alternatively, you could curate your own proposal, getting down on one knee at one of the building’s viewing platforms and finishing up at one of the best restaurants close to the Shard, which, in our experience, are considerably better than those actually in the tower.

RIALTO BRIDGE, VENICE

Even though the Rialto Bridge is one of the oldest of four bridges spanning the Grand Canal, it is also one of the most magical. Located in the very heart of Venice, one of the world’s most romantic cities, the stunning setting offers the very best views of canal and the colourful houses lining either side. At sunset, with the light twinkling off the water, there may be no better place to propose on earth.

Do be warned that Rialto Bridge gets very crowded, and finding the space (and privacy) to propose can be difficult. That said, the crowds do tend to thin down after 10pm. Alternatively, a little more out of the tourist throng is Tre Arche at the lagoon end of the Cannaregio Canal. The views are still stunning and the atmosphere equally romantic, but the crowds are significantly reduced. Result!

ROCK OF SKAROS, SANTORINI

The Rock of Skaros is one of the most popular attractions in Santorini and it’s not difficult to understand why. Offering breathtaking panoramic views of the island, it’s well worth the climb to the top for the framing and focal point of this majestic location.

The neighbourhood is also full of restaurants, bars and hotels, allowing you to take in the beautiful scenery everywhere you go, not to mention the beautiful sunset that slowly disappears behind the horizon at dusk. What’s more, Skaros boasts views of Santorini’s famous Caldera, the one of a kind, huge sea-filled crater in the centre of the island, caused by a volcano in the second millennium BC.

Peering over a magnificent crescent of sheer cliffs hundreds of metres high and the pooling Aegean Sea below, the Caldera’s backdrop represents something of a metaphor for popping the question, don’t you think? Will you take that leap of faith?

THE LAKE DISTRICT, CUMBRIA, UK

And one from the IDEAL highlight reel, just for good luck. The Lake District has long been associated with romanticism, famous for being the home of (and inspiration for) England’s most famous romantic poet, William Wordsworth.

Here you’ll find privacy just perfect for your proposal. Rather than bang on, we’ll redirect you to our 5 romantic holiday ideas in Cumbria and the Lake District for Valentine’s Day 2022. Which somewhat brings us full circle…

6 Simple Vegetarian Recipes That Are Truly Delicious

Did you know that the average American spends over $2,000 per year on restaurant dining? That’s over $200 per month!

And here’s another surprising stat before we encourage you to cook more; the average consumer in the UK spends a whopping £641 a year on takeaways.

The good news is that there are plenty of ways to cut down on this amount and your carbon footprint, by cooking healthy, delicious vegetarian food at home. We’ve collated six of our very favourite recipes for you, which are simple to make and oh-so delicious to eat.

The Ultimate Chickpea Curry Stew

By PeteerS via Canva

A curry/stew hybrid with Indian influences that’s both vegetarian and delicious? Count us in! We’re talking about the ultimate chickpea curry stew courtesy of our friends from Casa Verde.

The key here is to dice the potatoes to the same size, so everything cooks evenly and at the same pace. Already boasting superfoods turmeric, chickpeas (obvs) and kale, this one is made even healthier by the addition of brown rice; rejoice!

Ingredients

  • 1 onion
  • 1 gold potato
  • 1 tablespoon curry powder
  • 3 teaspoons garlic powder
  • Cayenne pepper to taste
  • 3 cups kale chopped
  • 2 cups chickpeas
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes
  • 3 tablespoons chopped cilantro
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1.5 cups cooked brown rice

Method

Take your onion, potato, curry powder, and garlic powder, and place them in a pan large enough to accommodate them and some water. Add in a sprinkle of cayenne and 1/4 cup of water, and simmer over medium heat for around 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add almond kale, chickpeas, tomatoes and the milk, and continue to cook for a further ten minutes, until the stew thickens slightly and becomes glossy. At this point, add lemon juice and salt to taste, and the cilantro.

Serve your chickpea curry stew over brown rice. Make sure you make enough to share – this one tastes even better after a night spent in the fridge!

IDEAL Tip: If you’re wondering how to make vegetarian stew or soup that’s packed with even more flavour, then the guys at Casa Verde offer this pro-tip; ‘’when creating a lentil or bean stew, spice up the flavor by adding a large bay leaf. You can also add a teaspoon of fennel seeds or a 1-in cinnamon stick.’’

They go on to recommend that ‘’For the bay leaf, you’ll want to add it while you’re cooking the legumes. However, remove the bay leaf before serving. You also want to remove the cinnamon stick before serving so that it doesn’t overwhelm the stew’s flavor.’’

Egg Fried Rice

Via Canva

If you’re after a cheap and nourishing meal that’s super quick to prepare and super delicious to eat, then fried rice is the leftover lover’s dream.

As you may have heard before, fried rice is easier to make when using leftover rice from a previous dinner; a day old (and a day cold) is perfect. This is because that time spent in your fridge dries out the rice agreeably, meaning it’s less prone to clumping.

What’s more, you can use a selection of whatever’s in your fridge or freezer, as long as it’s diced fairly finely and to roughly the same size to ensure even cooking. We particularly like courgette, carrot, cabbage, peas, sliced onion and sweetcorn.

All you’ve got to do is bring your wok up to a high-ish heat, then add a tablespoon or so of vegetable oil (you can perfume the oil with a garlic clove, if you like).

Add your cooked rice and the vegetables of your choosing to the wok and stir fry gently (you don’t want the grains to break down, rather to each be coated individually with oil) until the rice is heated through thoroughly. This could take up to ten minutes.

Prepare a seasoning mix of soy and oyster sauce, white pepper and sugar (just a little, oyster sauce is already pretty sweet), taste to check the balance is right. Then, make a well or space where the wok’s surface is exposed, and add your seasoning to the pan; allow it to caramelise slightly. Mix through the rice mix, add those spring onions and chillies, and serve.

Chickpea Veggie Burger

Another one from our pals at Casa Verde, these chickpea veggie burgers are a great way to swap out traditionally meaty meals for their plant based compatriots. These particular veggie burgers work equally well in salads and wraps.

Master this recipe, then, and you’ve got yourself endless meal options! These burgers freeze really well, too. Is there anything they can’t do?

Simply start by mashing up a can of chickpeas with a fork into a coarse, slightly-broken-down texture (think falafel rather than hummus). Then, add your preferred spices, such as ground cumin and coriander seed, red onion and some kind of nut butter to hold your patties together.

Create your ideal burger size and shape with your hands, and then pan fry for five minutes on either side in just a small spritz of oil. Alternatively, these guys should take around 20 minutes in an oven heated to 180°C, and even better, around ten minutes on the barbeque!

IDEAL Tip: Here at IDEAL, we love topping our chickpea burgers with a srirachas coleslaw and some creamy cheap burger cheese – you know the plastic type which isn’t really cheese. Another great topping for this one are those Mexican inspired cheddar slices, usually spiced with jalapeno chilli peppers for an extra kick, and finally, some chipotle mayo.

Frozen Pea Risotto

Many chefs say that frozen peas are, in fact, better than the freshly podded sort. This is because they’re picked at the height of their ripeness, and frozen immediately afterwards, locking in that sweet burst of freshness rather than the starchy effect you sometimes get from a podded one.

Channel the joy of this simple, satisfying vegetable in a frozen pea risotto. The other essential ingredients you’ll also likely have lying around; arborio (or other ‘risotto’) rice, chicken stock – hey, the cubes are fine – and parmesan cheese. Should you have shallots and garlic to hand, and some white wine, then it’s luxury living all the way to the dinner table.

Check out our tips on the IDEAL risotto to truly lift that plate to dizzy new heights.

Linguine Al Pesto

By Imageprofesssionals GmbH via Canva

Meaning ‘little tongues’ in Italian, linguine references the pasta’s oval-shaped tendrils. Whilst this shape is traditionally associated with seafood, due to the popularity of linguine alle vongole, the pasta goes equally well with the punchy, earthy flavour of pesto.

Liguria’s capital Genoa is the birthplace of both pesto alla Genovese and linguine, which belongs to the same pasta family as bavette and trenette, with all three hailing from Genoa. It’s no surprise, then, that linguine and pesto are a perfect match.

Linguine al pesto is a delightfully simple dish that can be whipped up in minutes for a lazy summer dinner. The recipe calls for only a handful of essential ingredients: Parmigiano Reggiano, garlic, pine nuts, basil — and, of course, freshly cooked linguine. Simple!

Ingredients

Serves 4

  • 400g linguine pasta
  • 75g Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, grated
  • 4 cloves of garlic, peeled
  • 1 handful pine nuts
  • 1 large bunch of fresh basil leaves
  • Extra virgin olive oil, to drizzle
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

Method

  1. Put the basil, garlic, pine nuts and a pinch of salt in a food processor. Blend on high for a few seconds then add the Parmigiano and a generous drizzle of olive oil. Mix until pesto is smooth and creamy.
  2. Add the linguine to a pan of salted boiling water and cook until al dente.
  3. Drain pasta and transfer to a mixing bowl. Add the pesto and stir well.
  4. Serve immediately with a garnish of fresh basil leaves, a sprinkle of pine nuts and a good drizzle of olive oil.

Thai Red Curry With Winter Melon

This is a mouth-watering classic Thai red curry recipe with a twist; winter melon and crispy tofu making it the perfect autumnal vegetarian meal. It is best served as part of a shared Thai meal along with jasmine rice and paired with a bottle (or two) of Singha beer, the original beer of Thailand. Let us direct you to our recipe here; you won’t regret it!

And with those six new vegetarian recipes under your belt, we can’t wait to be invited to yours for dinner soon!

Hawksmoor Air Street, London: Ideal For The World’s Best Steaks & Stellar Seafood

All the way back in 2006 when Hawksmoor first opened its doors, Jay Rayner declared that it had finally filled a void in Britain for “the sort of steak which is so readily available in the U.S”.

Fast forward 17 years and a truly excellent British steakhouse isn’t such a rare breed anymore. In fact, shortly after that particular restaurant critic’s public pronouncement, London started upping its steak game considerably.

In fact, just two years after Hawksmoor’s inaugural outpost helped turn Londoners conversant in the difference between bavette and brisket, the Lanes Restaurant & Bar became Marco Pierre White’s award winning London Steak House Company, a restaurant who are still cooking dry-aged British beef sourced from their private cutting room at revered butcher Aubrey Allen as 2023 cranks into gear.

Then there is Miller & Carter, the steakhouse chain from the hospitality company behind brands like Harvester and All Bar One, who, despite associations, serve an admittedly fine steak with full field-to-fork traceability from British farms intact.

Or, how about chef Jason Atherton’s Berners Tavern, who source their premium, grassfed beef from the Buccleuch Estate, a name that carries some serious pedigree in the world of steak.

There’s also popular places like Steak and Company, a collection of modern steakhouses with millennial pink branding to match the rare steak served within, housed in four central London locations for anyone looking for a side of skirt with their shopping.

However, despite the proliferation of steakhouses that have graced the streets of Britain in recent years, Hawksmoor remains a cut of flank about the rest.

Last year, the restaurant received the title of the World’s Best Steak confirming its bastion of beef status. The steak ambassadors and tastemakers that preside over the award declared that Hawksmoor “currently offers the best meat in the world”, going on to explain that “not only the taste, texture and preparation of the steak cuts convince us, but also key factors such as breeding, feeding, maturing and the respectful treatment of cattle from exclusively local and extensive farming”.

That respect for produce and process sees British-reared, grass-fed cattle sourced from various small farms (all part of Hawksmoor’s own breeding programme) scattered around the country. Once the beef arrives at the restaurant, it’s dry-aged for 35 days in dedicated chambers, creating beautifully textured steaks rich in flavour.

The beef offered at Hawksmoor is undoubtedly acclaim-worthy, and you’ll have a selection of massive cuts available to you, marbled to perfection and all served by weight. Though you pay by the 100g, realistically the minimum you can order is half a kilo, which is a perfect amount for a very, very greedy punter, or for two to share quite happily.

What makes a great steak is, of course, a matter of personal preference. Do you value a melt-in-the-mouth tenderness, of meat the texture of butter and a minimal effort in chewing? Then you’ll be wanting to seek out a fillet; it’s the part of the cow which has done the least work possible and is as lean as you like.

When it comes to steak, fat generally equals flavour, and if you’re seeking a seriously beefy taste, then connoisseurs will point you in the direction of something more marbled, such as the rump, which is full of the richness a good distribution of fat brings.

Whatever steak you choose, at Hawksmoor it’s pretty much obligatory to order the anchovy hollandaise to accompany it. You’ll want to dunk more than just your steak in it – definitely your chips, too, and perhaps even your body?

Speaking of anchovies, the seafood, which at Air Street shares headliner status with the steaks, is something to write home (or in an online magazine) about, too.

Indeed, the menu at Air Street is equally-weighted between steak and seafood, and if you weren’t convinced by a famous steak restaurant trying their hand at fish, then you will be when you hear that Mitch Tonks, the chef/owner of critically acclaimed Seahorse in Dartmouth, oversees all things oceanic here.

His school of thought towards fish – to ”buy the best and cook it simply” – echoes that of Hawksmoor’s attitude to meat; it’s a match made in heaven. Tonks’s cookbook, prosaically named ‘Fish’, is superb, by the way.

Anyway, back to the fish at Hawksmoor, which comes from Brixham market, brought in fresh daily. On a previous visit, a whole tail of monkfish, grilled over coals and standing up more than capably to the restaurant’s signature bone marrow gravy, had this carnivore contemplating turning pesci (if it weren’t for that pesky bone marrow, of course).

Perhaps our favourite section of the menu, though, is the starters. It’s a beautiful litany of every entree you’d expect to see on a surf-and-turf restaurant menu, and then some.

There are roasted scallops, perfectly caramelised on the outside and opaque in the middle, served in their shell and swimming in a white port and tarragon sauce, all topped with breadcrumbs. It’s a classic Mitch Tonks starter if ever there was one.

For the carnivores in the crew, a rich, unctuous, and oh-so indulgent bone marrow with onions and sourdough is another must order, as is the Hawksmoor Caesar, something of a house speciality. All freshness and crunch, it’s one of the more perfect plates of food you’ll find in London. And whilst occasionally prone to hyperbole, this time we’re not exaggerating.

Yep, you could easily build a meal of small plates from the starters here, and in a place sometimes associated with splurging, this might actually represent a wallet-friendly way of doing things.

A final word to the wise for those with a sweet tooth; do save room for the sticky toffee pudding. Carla Henriques, known as the Portuguese Princess of Pastry and more lately as Hawksmoor’s Queen of Puddings, has tweaked and refined the recipe here into its purest, most straightforward form, and it’s an exemplary version.

If glucose levels haven’t yet spiked, order a box of their salted caramel ‘Tributes’ to take home. Essentially a pimped up version of Rolos, you may not love anyone enough to give them the last one of these.

One for the road? Finish off with their ‘anti-fogmatic’ marmalade cocktail: gin, Campari, lemon juice, orange bitters and marmalade. It’s a quaffable drink if ever there was one and a great way to steel yourself before the bill arrives.

Through all the patter about dry-ageing and grass-feeding, day boats and rare breeds, perhaps the best thing about Hawksmoor is its dependability. There’s nothing worse than blowing money on a mediocre steak – or a cottonwool-like lobster tail for that matter – but you’re always confident that’s something which doesn’t happen there.

Instead, you’re guaranteed a meal of class and good taste from the moment you settle in until you spill out into Air Street full but happy.

Now stick a fork in us, we’re done.

7 Iconic American Sandwiches & Where To Eat Them In London

Let’s start by taking a bite out of history; the sandwich isn’t an American invention, with the oft told story suggesting that it was the fourth Earl of Sandwich here in England who first ordered a meal made of meat between sliced pieces of bread so he didn’t have to leave the gambling table, and thus the sandwich was invented.

However, there’s no denying that those guys across the pond do love the simple construct of putting meat, cheese, sauce and the rest between two slices of bread. You could even argue that, much like jazz, pro wrestling and whooping, they’ve perfected the art of the sarnie.

American sandwiches are a result of immigration, of class, of resourcefulness and creativity, showcasing the true variety and deliciousness of the world of sandwiches, all in one bite.

But where to find the very best here in the UK? Well, here’s a start; our guide to 7 iconic American sandwiches and where to eat them in London.

Meatball Marinara Sub From New York

Juicy beef meatballs covered in a rich marinara sauce, snuggled into a soft sub roll, topped with cheese all melted and gooey… Yes please!

You’ve got to hand it to the Italian-Americans of NYC who lay claim to the dish’s invention. It’s comfort food at its best, even for us non-Italian Americans, and it’s one we find ourselves returning to time and time again.

Bee Wilson, a food historian and author of “Sandwich: A Global History”, once said that the sandwich is “the perfect American food”, adding that “it’s the food of workaholics: something you can eat, with a single hand, without ever quitting your desk.”

We suspect she wasn’t thinking of the meatball sub when she wrote that! This is one messy sandwich, make no mistake, and saucy fingers are as much a part of the experience as a ruined white shirt after it’s all over.

But how did the meatball sub become a thing? Though the Italian meatball may well have started life as a relatively small kofta, when Italian immigrants arrived in the US’ North East in the last 19th century and found jobs more well paying than back home, their meatballs ”grew along with the average family paycheck”, eventually finding their way between bread as a way of enjoying them on the go (not exactly possible with spaghetti!).

For a great meatball sub in New York, head to Parm, run by Michelin-starred chefs Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi. The version here is legendary.

Almost as good, in our humble opinion, is the sub found at Defonte’s over in Brooklyn. That said, the best meatball sub is a pretty subjective thing, and we wouldn’t blame you for loving your grandmother’s version the most.

Where To Eat The Best Meatball Marinara Sub In London: Of course, you can find this sandwich at any Subway, and it’s fair to say that the Meatball Marinara is an iconic part of the Subway brand.

While it’s by no means the best meatball sub in London, we’re not snobby and will admit that there is a time and a place for this guy, namely when you’re feeling hungover, after all meat + marinara + cheese + carbs = hangover cure.

Recently, Subway have even come up with a meatless meatball sub, made in collaboration with Beyond Meat for all the plant based eaters out there. Click here to find Subway coupons and save some money after last night’s party.

But we promised the best in the city, right? Although not always on the menu, if you want an outstanding version, then head to Larry’s, a New York style deli in Peckham.

Their meatball marinara sandwich, which comes on focaccia and is topped with aged Gouda, is something we regularly dream about. And what a messy dream that ends up being…

We know it’s not the typical, standard submarine roll, or the traditional cheese used in most meatball subs, but it’s so darn good, and if you ask us, it’s the focaccia that makes it. Don’t @us, purists.

For another sub with a twist, keep an eye out for Jez Felwick’s street food truck The Bowler, which pops up all over town, including at Seven Dials Market, outside The National Theatre, and more.

These guys serve a wicked beef chuck and chorizo sub, all doused in plenty of spiced tomato sauce. The meatballs are made with mince that’s been ground from whole cuts of quality British meat, resulting in a beautifully succulent sandwich.

Pastrami Sandwich From New York

A New York institution, the Pastrami is a classic sandwich served in kosher Jewish delicatessens throughout the city. It’s large and indulgent, savoury and sharp, and just perfectly balanced. In the best versions, the beef is cut thick, retaining its juices, with a peppery crust and classic accoutrements of super-size gherkins and hot yellow mustard. Bliss.

When in New York, it’s pretty much obligatory to head on over to Katz Delicatessen, an institution almost as New York as the sandwich itself. Here they pack their sandwiches so full with thick-cut pastrami – sliced by hand and nestled between two slices of rye – that it’s a serious challenge to get your chops around it.

The late Anthony Bourdain told Variety that “the first thing I get when I’m back in New York is a pastrami sandwich. Pastrami Queen (1125 Lexington Ave.) is a really good pastrami sandwich — if not the best, among the very best. Just a good, nice mix of fat and lean. It’s the real deal, served warm on fresh, soft rye bread with the right kind of mustard. Good pickles”.

And we have to admit, we do like to follow suit.

Where To Eat The Best Pastrami Sandwich In London: If you’re a New Yorker, the home-cured, hand-carved meat at B&K Salt Beef Bar & Restaurant is worth writing home about.

It’s a family business, run by the sons and grandsons of founder Bambos, who started working in the salt beef trade in the 1950s. The pastrami sandwich here is a class act, and for those still hungry, they also do a great Reuben.

Philly Cheesesteak From Philadelphia

Thinly-sliced sauteed rib-eye steak, topped with melted American cheese (namely the orange, gooey substance known as Cheez Whiz or Provolone), served on a long, white, crusty hoagie roll loaded with fried onions, peppers and/or mushrooms… The only thing more of a mouthful than that menu description is the sarnie itself.

While processed American cheese in a sandwich may sound wrong (tell that to the hamburger), that melted cheese mingling with the steak means that every bite has the perfect amount of creamy saltiness. And in a sandwich, the right distribution is everything, don’t you think?

Legend has it that the Philly cheesesteak sandwich came into existence when a taxi driver pulled up to Pat Olivieri’s hot dog cart after catching whiff of the vendor grilling beef from a butcher for his own lunch. He then asked for a steak sandwich and word spread; soon taxi drivers from all over the city were visiting Olivieri for his famous steak sarnie.

Because of the popularity, Oliveri opened up Pat’s King of Steaks on 9th Street and Passyunk Avenue, where you can still buy a Philly Cheesesteak today.

By alpaksoy via Canva

Be warned; there’s a whole load of lingo around ordering a cheesesteak in Philly. In short, you basically skip all unnecessary words and even some letters.

If you want onions, it’s “a steak wit”. You can probably guess what a ”steak witout” entails…

There’s more. Some shops may ask what type of cheese you want, so “steak wiz wit” means you’re ordering steak with Cheese Whiz and onions.

Finally, and importantly, all cheesesteaks are well-done. Never ask for it rare or medium – it’s always well done.

Cheesesteaks are everywhere in Philly, with hundreds of restaurants serving them up to happy, hungry punters. If you’re after a version with some serious heritage, then it has to be the aforementioned Pat’s King of Steaks, the inventor and originator.

However, Netflix foodie favourite Phil Rosenthal thinks that there isn’t one better than at Dalessandro’s, and it’s not hard to see why; the rolls are bursting with beefy, cheesy goodness.

Where To Try A Philly Cheesesteak In London: Passyunk Avenue provides a taste of Philadelphia right here in London, with venues in Waterloo, Fitzrovia and Stratford’s Westfield.

The difference here is that Passyunk uses British ingredients. Their Cheez Wiz sauce is made daily using British Cheddar, whilst the steak here is sourced from local butchers, with the restaurant’s rib-eye having just the right ratio of fat to ensure a juicy and flavourful finish when cooked and shredded.

Cuban Sandwich From Florida

Ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, mustard and pickles, all layered up between slices of Cuban bread – what’s not to love?

The Cuban sandwich, which is more lovingly called the ‘Cubano,’ is a Floridian lunchtime staple which sees a ham and cheese sandwich given a distinctly Cuban flourish with the addition of roast pork that’s first been marinated in a spicy, piquant mojo sauce made from chilli, lime juice, cumin, oregano and garlic.

It’s thought that the Cuban sandwich came from cafes catering to Cuban workers in Tampa, but now this beloved sarnie has spread in popularity all over the State (and States). We can’t get enough of it!

If you’re in Florida, head to Ybor City, one of Tampa’s most vibrant and historic neighbourhoods. Here you’ll find La Segunda Central Bakery. Known for its Cuban bread, this fourth-generation bakery has been in operation since 1915 and produces 18,000 hand-made loaves of Cuban bread every day. Sit down and tuck into a Cuban sandwich here and forget about all your troubles!

Where To Try In A Cubano London: Head to Cubana in Waterloo to enjoy a Cuban sandwich on the terrace for lunch, then stay for happy hour, dinner, live music, and dancing to some Latin-American tunes.

The View Tube Cafe, close to the Olympic Park and run by the team behind Munchies Latin American food trucks, is another great spot for a taste of Cuba.

Lobster Roll From New England

Partial to chunks of lobster meat tossed in a delicate layer of mayo? Us too. The beauty of the lobster roll is its utter simplicity, and talk to any New Englander and they’ll tell you that eating lobster rolls in New England, preferably with piping hot French fries and sweeping views of the Ocean, is a regional pastime.

Just in case you don’t know, there are different types of lobster roll, owing to the city of their origin. As Delish explains, “a Maine lobster roll is served with the lobster meat chilled and dressed in mayo with some crunchy greens like chives, celery, and/or scallions. A Connecticut lobster roll is served warm, dunked in butter, on a toasted bun”.

Who knew?

By DebHallPhotos21 from Getty Images via Canva

The best lobster roll in its spiritual homeland is highly contested. Just about every seafood restaurant in New England serves lobster rolls and it’s all down to a matter of personal preference, memories and experience. However, the ones most highly regarded by New Englanders include the rolls at McLoons Lobster Shack, The Clam Shack, The Lobster Shack at Two Lights and Five Islands Lobster Co, amongst many others.

Where to Eat The Best Lobster Roll In London: Burger and Lobster certainly influenced London’s love affair with the lobster roll, and we have to admit, it’s a damn good version, with the rolls here jam packed with fresh chunks of chilled Nova Scotia lobster meat.

While it has nine venues across the capital (and more across the world), our favourite spot to enjoy a roll is looking out over the water at their West India Quay restaurant.

Bob’s Lobster in London Bridge and Big Easy Restaurant BBQ & Lobster Shack in Covent Garden also serve up fine renditions of this classic American sandwich.

Italian Beef From Chicago

The New York Times recently reported that demand for this Chicago-speciality has boomed thanks to series ‘The Bear’, and we can see why.

This Italian American classic has origins in Chicago’s Italian immigrant population, many of whom worked in the stockyards back in the 1900s. The story goes that the the working men would bring home tough meat that couldn’t be sold. To make the meat tender, it was slow roasted before being simmered for hours in a beef-based stock.

By Bhofack2 from Getty Images Via Canva

Like the Philly Cheesesteak, it’s a highly customisable sandwich, with many choosing to add bell peppers, pickles, sauces or all three, and many more opting to then dip it.

Yep, arguably the best thing about the Italian Beef is the availability of the Double Dip option which, at the diner’s preference, sees the whole damn thing dipped (or double-dipped) into the juice that the meat is cooked in. Best wear a bib for this one!

Where To Try The Best Italian Beef In London: At the time of writing, Bodega Rita’s (probably our favourite deli sandwich joint in the Big Smoke) is serving up an ode to this iconic sandwich, here called ‘The Second City’.

The version includes provolone, iceberg lettuce, vinegar pepper relish, and chilli-oregano pangrattato, all served with house mayo and American mustard. Yum.

Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich

We finish things off with the Peanut Butter Sandwich.

Most Americans grew up eating peanut butter and jam sandwiches. Even American athletes love it, with ESPN magazine naming the PB&J a ‘staple snack’ of the NBA. Studies even suggest that a peanut butter and jam sandwich could add 30 minutes to your lifespan, although we think that’s perhaps a stretch.

By Tatyana via Canva

Where To Eat A Peanut Butter & Jam Sandwich In London: Unfortunately, the PB&J Society, who served grilled peanut butter and jam sandwiches made (to paraphrase the London Evening Standard) with deep-roasted, home-churned peanut butter and mixed with real-fruit jam between two thick slices of Brixton wheat and rye sourdough bread, have recently closed in 2019 and no longer serves this iconic sandwich.

It was arguably the only place to get a really good P&J sarnie in London. Not to worry, this sandwich is easy to make at home.

Now, is it your place or ours for one? Mine’s one with crunchy peanut butter, if you’re making…

6 Chic & Stylish Alternatives To The Traditional Men’s Suit

The rulebook on how the modern man is expected to dress for formal events is being rewritten. And not a moment too soon, we should add.

Where once the choices were between wearing a tuxedo, a dark coloured single breasted suit, or simply staying home, now the options are endless for men to express their personality and own unique sense of style, all while paying lip service to the formality of the event they’re attending.

Indeed, just because you’re not wearing a traditional suit, doesn’t mean that you’ve forgotten your sense of occasion. Do things differently, singularly, and confidently, with these 6 chic and stylish alternatives to the traditional men’s suit.

Belted Mac Coat, Waistcoat & Jeans

When it comes to subbing out the full suit in favour of something fresher, it’s a good idea to take pieces from the formal outfit, whilst not giving in to the look as a whole.

How about ignoring the suit jacket and trousers and wearing only the waistcoat? Team it with a plain, long-sleeved shirt, dark jeans, and pair of Derby or Del Toro shoes to get a hint of suave formality laid over a background of comfortable casual wear.

It’s not only about the clothing when it comes to looking formal, you also need to consider how your clothes fit the frame. For a masculine outline that enhances a slimmer waist and broader shoulders, opt for a belted mac coat in beige, grey or black that pulls you in at your stomach. Cutting the right figure, outline wise, works to take your look from unkempt to urbane without requiring a huge amount of extra effort.

Crew-Neck Jumper & Smart Trousers

Textured knitwear is another top avenue to head down when it comes to dressing formally, without a suit. Woollen men’s fashion is on-trend and versatile, making it ideal when you want to minimise your getting ready time in the morning, pre-work, but still mange to arrive at the office looking sharp and slick.

Ribbed, crew-neck sweaters in burgundy, navy or moss green look great under a smart, wool-blend overcoat. Since you’ve gone for a more casual torso, we recommend ‘dressing-up’ your lower half. Throw on a pair of skinny-fit, smart trousers in black or grey, then polish off your look with smart, leather, laced shoes.

A great way to dress down a formal look is by swapping out the formal trousers for something a little more relaxed. These personalised men’s work trousers are great for those who work in environments where it’s less formal or corporate.

Double-Breast Waistcoat, Tee, Chinos & Brogues

Double-breasted waistcoats are iconic as a formal menswear clothing piece, which means you don’t have to add any extra frippery to the rest of your outfit to look dashing for an important occasion.

Pair this with simple, straight cut chinos. Whilst all trousers to some extent can be worn as smart casual business attire given a modern makeover, chinos are definitely the better choice if you want to dress up a little bit, particularly when combined with a plain t-shirt, which adds workable comfort to your outfit. Finish with a pair of embossed panel brogues for a final formal twist.

Check patterns and dark shades look best when it comes to your waistcoat choice. Since the standard tee is a typical casual wear item, we suggest wearing the same colour in a different shade to your waistcoat to maintain a subtle, sophisticated palette.

Do remember that chinos should never be bunched at the bottom so if they’re too long, get them trimmed or cuff the hems (if it suits your tastes)!

A Suede Jacket With Jeans & A Tee

Suede is a true luxe menswear fabric and you should incorporate it into your no-suit wardrobe whenever you can. Like we said earlier, deconstructing the standard formal suit and rebuilding it the way you want is the best way to approach this way of dressing.

Go for a smart, black suede jacket with black jeans for the ideal spin on the traditional suit. Then, throw on a grey tee with a v-neck cut to create a streamlined illusion to your frame and customise with a black and chrome Eazybelt and suede Chelsea boots. Since the standard men’s tee is typically low-key, try and style it up with a quality watch and masculine, square-top rings.

Roll-Neck Sweater With A Tailored Suit

Shape and definition are essential when you want to look confident and prepared for a special occasion — and these are characteristics that tailored suits deliver effortlessly.

To achieve the same level of masculine distinction without the awkwardness of a full suit, pull on a slim-fit, roll-neck sweater. Roll-necks are one of the few fashion pieces that feel comfy, but look like you’ve put the effort in.

Get it in a fine-gauge fabric to create a polished and streamlined torso, then add formal definition with a tailored jacket and pair of skinny smart trousers. Finish off with black or brown desert boots, and you’ve mastered a fool-proof, contemporary side-step to the traditional full suit.

An Oxford Shirt & Blazer With Pocket Square Or Knotted Tie

If you really don’t fancy wearing a traditional suit but know the occasion’s calling for one, don’t stress. There’s no kicking aside the fact that the long-sleeved Oxford shirt is the simplest way to guarantee a polished formal vibe without the feeling of a heavy, full suit. So, if you want to strike the right balance between contemporary-casual and established-formal, start with this and build out.

Shading is essential here. Bright and bold shirts won’t cut it if you want to look suave and sophisticated, nor will outerwear and trousers that are too light. Opt for a buttoned-down shirt in a subtle, block-colour —  white or pale blue, say — and throw a dark, skinny-fit, wool blazer over the top.

If you fancy taking it one step further, slip a pocket square into your jacket or customise your shirt with a knitted tie — still avoiding bright hues. At this point, your outfit’s polished enough, so choose either some tailored trousers or even jeans, then seal it with leather brogues for the ideal smart causal look.

And with that, we can’t wait to see what you’re wearing next time we meet!

5 Luxury UK Getaway Ideas For Couples

Defining the term ‘luxury’ never felt so difficult. Where once it was a case of throwing some gold at it, sprinkling over some sparkle and harnessing the power of the prohibitively expensive, now it’s a whole new notion. Indeed, the idea now has myriad forms and functions, many of which don’t concern cost at all. Time, memories, experiences…they all hold value in the modern world.

The term seems to get more complicated still when you add ‘for couples’ into the mix. Because one partner’s feelings of what defines luxury may differ hugely from their significant other.

Finding the ideal luxury holiday certainly extends way past where you lay your head at night. It’s the opportunity to soak up the culture around you and to learn something new. It’s the chance to pull out the party dresses and smart shirts for an evening out dining as a couple. It’s the freedom to see, do and try new things — so you both return home with heads full of memories and hearts full of love.

With a cost of living crisis ongoing and the environmental impact of plane travel troubling, today we’ve decided to focus on trips taken closer to home, with these; our 5 luxury UK getaways for couples.

Stay In A Cute Cottage In Cheltenham, The Cotswolds

The Cotswolds region is renowned for its honey-stoned houses, rolling landscapes and wealth of history — the ultimate quintessentially English destination. But with so many towns and villages to explore, which one has the best activities for couples?

Well, we suggest adding Cheltenham in Gloucestershire to your fun filled itinerary as it has an abundance of stylish places to eat, drink and stay that are just perfect for couples.

Here you can stroll hand-in-hand along the tree-lined promenade, visit the Cotswold Farm Park and ride a steam train on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. It’s all there; check out our in depth guide to the area and its activities here.

Enjoy A Beach Getaway In St. Ives, Cornwall

Cornwall is your typical UK holiday destination for good reason; famous for its sandy beaches, picturesque harbour villages and delicious pastries, ice cream and fudge, it manages to straddle the quaint with the cool in a way only quintessential Britishness could. While pretty much everywhere in the ceremonial county embodies the term ‘romantic’, if you want to add a touch of luxury to your trip, your eyes should be drawn to St. Ives.

A step away from the traditional seaside vibes of the area, but also boasting a maze of narrow cobbled streets, independent shops and boutiques and award-winning restaurants, cafés and bars, this is an elegant place to holiday without losing the charm of the British seaside.

Additionally, Land’s End, which hosts regular fireworks throughout the summer, is only a 40-minute drive away. What could be more romantic than watching fireworks with your lover? There really is no reason not to.

Explore The Highlands From Its Gateway, Perth

Situated on the banks of the River Tay in east Scotland, the relatively untapped potential of the city of Perth is apparent from the moment it comes into view. Nicknamed the ‘Fair City’, it’s a place laced with gorgeous medieval architecture; George Street, in particular, is a charming place to eat, shop and explore.

The city brims with that smalltown, creative indie vibe, and families passionate about their artisanal, hand crafted products serve the town almost exclusively. You’ll also find plenty of  activities to enjoy, including historic buildings, castles, and museums, such as The Black Watch —  a 5-star multi-award-winning visitor attraction.

Take A City Break In Belfast, Northern Ireland

Over in Northern Ireland’s capital of Belfast, there’s so much more to do than the world’s largest Titanic visitor experience (though for the kids, that one’s not to be missed). This exciting city has a vibrant mix of art, history, great food and beautiful landscapes to explore, including Game of Thrones filming locations and for the parents, the Bushmills Whiskey.

For the kids, there’s plenty going on, including Aunt Sandra’s Candy Factory (words which would be heaven to five year old us), Streamvale Open Farm and HMS Caroline a First World War-era ship now restored as a must-see floating museum.

5 Key Health Checks To Schedule As You Get Older

It’s a fact of life that needs to be confronted. As we get older, the risk of developing various health problems increases. By scheduling health checks with a medical professional, you can catch many of these health problems early. Below are some of the health checks that are recommended as we get older.

Vision

It’s common for our vision to deteriorate as we get older. Many people require reading glasses as they reach their mid 40s and 50s, and long-distance vision can also fade for many people. More serious conditions like cataracts can also develop as we get older. Getting these vision problems diagnosed early can enable them to be treated – whether it’s via glasses or surgery.

Regular eye tests with the help of a trusted optician are the best way to diagnose vision problems. This could prevent accidents, and other further problems from increased vision loss. This guide at WebMD explains more about vision problems as you get older.

Hearing

Our hearing can also fade with age. In fact, one in three adults over 65 is likely to experience hearing loss. Hearing difficulties can make social interaction harder and in some cases affect balance. However, most people do not realise that they are experiencing hearing loss until it becomes more severe, simply due to how gradual hearing loss can be.

By scheduling a hearing test with the help of an audiologist, you can help to diagnose hearing loss early while it is still mild. Getting a hearing aid early could help you to keep your hearing sharp and prevent knock-on issues like social anxiety.

Blood Pressure

High blood pressure can increase your risk of a heart attack or stroke. By diagnosing high blood pressure early, it’s possible to take measures to lower it and reduce the risk of any serious health problems. Most people do not know that they have high blood pressure because it has no physical symptoms. This is why it’s worth scheduling regular blood pressure tests as you get older. This is measured by placing a cuff on the arm – a doctor can do this, or you can do it yourself by buying a blood pressure cuff.

Cancer

The risk of developing cancer increases as we get older. While cancer is known for being one of the biggest killers, most forms of cancer are treatable when caught early. Unfortunately, cancer doesn’t always display obvious symptoms until it gets more serious. This is why it’s worth investing in cancer screenings as you get older – these can detect cancer in the early stages, even when there are no visible symptoms.

It’s worth booking screenings for the most common cancers such as prostate cancer screenings as detailed here at Check4Cancer. Other common cancers like breast cancer and bowel cancer can also be detected early via screenings.

There are three national screenings programmes available on the NHS, too. These are cervical screening, breast screening, and bowel screening.

Cholesterol

Cholesterol is fat found within our blood. Too much cholesterol can lead to fatty blockages that can lead to strokes and heart attacks. There are not any obvious physical signs that a person has high cholesterol. This is why a blood test is recommended. Doctors recommend getting a blood test for cholesterol over the age of 40, as this is when high-cholesterol-related health problems can become more common.

12 Ideal Tips To Help You Stay Calm & Stress Less During Exam Time

Someone, somewhere in the world, right now, is worrying about an exam. Indeed, with every  failed revision session and with every forgotten flashcard, stress and anxiety ensues. Moreover, come exam day it’s easy to find yourself up until the early hours of the morning, on the brink of an emotional breakdown because you don’t think you know anything.

With the hope to help reduce the stress and anxiety that comes during the exam period, here are 12 IDEAL tips to help you study and stay calm during exams time.

Practice Makes Perfect

First things first, try and find out what the exams will be on and perhaps try your hand at some test papers. Ask your lecturer(s) what will be set and what you need to study. While they won’t be able to give you the exact details, they’ll be able to help steer your revision in the right direction, in terms of the content to expect, as well as the structure of the exam.

Avoid Procrastinating

Many – us included – choose to procrastinate, leaving revision until the last minute. Indeed, procrastination is the enemy of many folks that want to sit down and focus on their upcoming exams.

No matter what you’re doing right now, you could start procrastinating at any point and thus slow down your work. All it takes is a message from a friend on your phone and your focus will spiral out of control and you’ll start looking at something completely unrelated to what you were doing before. Which brings us to our next point…

Rid Yourself Of Distraction

Consider what distracts you when you’re revising. Do you find yourself singing along to songs? Turn off the music and put on something more relaxing. Are you constantly on your phone? Lock it in a drawer and turn on silent mode. Constantly snacking? Eat a meal before you work to beat cravings.

Indeed, distractions are the main cause of procrastination and you need to find ways to get rid of them as best as you can. Furthermore try to work in a separate room to family or housemates, and if possible avoid working in bed, as this can make you feel tired and is not a productive space. Well, not for revising, anyway.

Organise Your Work

Separating your revision into more manageable chunks, with designated times and targets, serves to break up the monumental task of revising a subject considerably. Make a revision timetable (but don’t spend more than one hour creating it otherwise you’re just procrastinating) and create a daily revision list. Use it to write down everything you need to get done, in order of importance or when it needs doing.

Then you can cross it off as you go – try not to let anything roll over. Sad though it may sound, you will feel a real sense of achievement seeing it all ticked off! Revision timetables and lists are one of the best ways to keep on top of your revision, and using a flashcard maker can also be an effective way to reinforce key concepts during your study sessions, helping you re-conceptualise your confidence, reflect and reframe.

Be Realistic

Set realistic goals for yourself. When studying for an exam, don’t expect to go through a thick textbook in just 2 hours. Make sure you set realistic expectations so you’re not constantly disappointing yourself, both about the upcoming exams and your wider academic future.

You should consider using CampusReel’s college acceptance calculator or UCAS’ official guide to the Tariff Points required to get an accurate understanding of what you need to do to get into your chosen college.

Set Specific Times For A Break

You can’t be expected to revise for the whole day. Set specific times for your breaks as knowing when you’ll be able to nip out to the shop or eat your lunch will help keep you motivated so you can get certain chunks of revision out of the way first.

You’ll come back refreshed and ready to tackle the next subject with verb and vigour. Indeed, studies have shown that workers are at their most productive when they work at 45-minute spells and then take a 15-minute break. It’s a perfect excuse to go for a walk and get some fresh air.

Breathe

Learn to take deep breaths – it’s good for your health. Stress and tension during an exam can make you anxious, subsequently affecting your breathing patterns. It can also make you nervous during the paper thus lead to poor performance. Taking deep breaths can help you calm your nerves and manage stress and anxiety. Moreover, it can help you to avoid panic attacks.

Eat Healthily

To concentrate during your studies, you should to eat healthy foods and drinks. Eating junk food when preparing to study will make you lose focus and feel lethargic. However, consuming healthy foods allows your brain to perform at ideal levels. Fact. Additionally, you need to reduce your intake of stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine. Also drink plenty of water as it will help boost your energy levels.

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is fundamental to every human being. It helps promote good health. Lack of enough sleep can lead to memory loss, stress and depression, nervousness among other negative symptoms. It is crucial you get enough sleep when studying for your exams. It will help relax your mind and body. Also, you will be able to concentrate as you will feel fresh.

Exercise

Exercising is also another method to stay calm during an exam. Studying for long hours can exhaust your mind and body, and create a mental block to concentration and retention of facts.

It’s good to seek release regularly during your study sessions, then. Stretch, take a walk or pace around your study room to exercise your body. This will help relax your muscles as well as enable you to concentrate on your study material.

Treat Yourself

Reward yourself when you complete a part of your study material. It will motivate you to keep on studying. Moreover, it will give you time to relax before exams your stress and anxiety levels will be at bay.

Practice Positive Thinking

Believe in yourself. Have confidence in your capabilities. Trust that you can battle any subject regardless of the challenges that may come with remembering the material. Positive thinking can take you far in life, so have faith in the process, and good luck!

Galentine’s Day Bliss: How To Create The Perfect Day For Your Besties

Move over, Valentine’s Day… This year, we’re taking Galentine’s Day to a whole new level! While celebrating the love you have for your ‘significant other’ is valuable on February 14, you should also make an effort to recognise the strength of your relationship with friends, too. After all, there’s plenty of love to go around.

Galentine’s Day is an occasion celebrated on February 13 (the day before Valentine’s Day), and was invented by Leslie Knope, a fictional character on Parks and Recreation. Thank heavens she did invent it! When you live such a busy life, it can be easy to fall complacent and let the importance of appreciating your female friendships take a back seat. Let’s change that this year.

Here’s a how-to guide to ensure you have a fun-filled, rewarding Galentine’s Day that nourishes your relationship with your friends.

Plan A Unique, Fun Activity

Ahead of February 13, plan an itinerary that’s bursting with exciting, unique activities that the whole group will enjoy. Forget boozy brunches and café lunches if that’s something you’ve already done a million times before; get creative and identify new opportunities that will delight and unite. Here are some of our suggestions:

Create a scrapbook – Get the gang together and create scrapbooks filled with your friendship’s favourite memories. Ask each person to bring photographs and sentimental mementos (such as concert tickets or dinner receipts) and spend the afternoon sticking them into place along with pretty sequins, ribbons, and stickers. Now you each have a nostalgic book that tells the story of your friendship.

Volunteer togetherGive back to the community that helped your relationships blossom by volunteering at a local charity or non-profit organisation that has a special place in all your hearts. It could be taking part in a fundraising event at the school where you all first met, or joining a volunteer programme at the hospital that looks after you all during your times of need.

Hike and glamping trip – Spend some time with Mother Nature and bond over the great outdoors. Although it can be rather chilly in February, hiking in cold weather can be a powerful cardiovascular workout because your body is forced to work harder to maintain normal body temperature; plus, it can offer a unique kind of scenery you won’t find in the summer. End the day by unwinding and relaxing in a heated glamping pod, enjoying your favourite snacks and discussing the day’s highlights.

Write A Heartfelt Letter To Each Other

This Galentine’s Day, tell your friends just how much they mean to you by writing a heartfelt letter to each other. Expressing your feelings and appreciation for someone is such an underrated way to strengthen your relationship, boost self-esteem, and improve communication.

As busy humans that are always on the go, we often assume that people know what we mean and how we feel, but this isn’t always the case. Plus, it’s simply a lovely thing to do that makes both the writer and the reader feel good! An occasion as special as Galentine’s Day requires sweet words that help enforce a loving atmosphere.

Exchange Thoughtful Gifts

In advance of February 13, consider buying or crafting a special gift that demonstrates how much you appreciate your friends. Not only will it delight those that receive the present, but actually giving the gift releases various “feel-good” chemicals in the body, including serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins. It’s a joyful decision all round! Gift ideas include:

A framed thoughtful quote – Is there a particular earnest or motivational quote that resonates with the friendship group? Place it above a group picture and have it printed and framed.

A bag filled with their favourite things – Purchase a pretty floral backpack for each member and pop inside items such as books, sachets of their most-loved hot drink, bath sets, and favourite snacks. Practical yet meaningful.

Personalised jewellery – Gifting an attractive necklace or bracelet is never a bad idea, especially when that piece of jewellery has been personalised. Choose to have each person’s initial engraved on the pendant, or simply buy the same design, so you’re all matching.

Reflect On The Importance Of Female Friendships

Galentine’s Day is a reminder to appreciate the supportive female friends we’re so fortunate to have in our lives, so take a moment to do exactly that on February 13. When you get some time to yourself, make a cuppa, get cosy on the sofa with a blanket, and spend a few moments thinking about your nearest and dearest.

Reflect on past friendships, think about the different ways your female friends have supported you over the years, and consider the role you play in their lives. Your inner circle has the power to influence your mindset and your experiences, even if you don’t realise it. That’s why it’s so important you pick your friends wisely and give them the treatment they deserve.

The Bottom Line

Galentine’s Day is a remarkable time to celebrate and appreciate the wonderful bond between women and to cherish the friendships that have been formed in our lives. Remember that it’s OK – and not unusual – if you don’t have a big group of female friends that mean the world to you; what matters is that you cherish the ones you do have.

A successful Galentine’s Day can be enjoyed between two friends or 22! Quality over quantity, always. We hope you have a special day, whatever you choose to do, and whoever you choose to spend it with. Girl power!

How To Revive Dry Hair Extensions

Hair extensions are an investment, and you want them to look perfect for as long as possible – so it can be annoying when they start drying out and getting frizzy. Extension experts Cliphair reveal how to revive dry hair and keep your extensions (and the rest of your hair!) looking their best.

Why So Dry?

Various factors can, and will, dry out your hair and hair extensions. From things you can control, like over-washing, and things you can’t, like cold weather.

Your scalp produces sebum and natural oils that keep your locks healthy and moisturised, so washing your hair too often can strip your scalp and hair of the natural oils, causing it to dry out.  But no matter what type of extensions you have, they just won’t benefit from those oils as your natural hair does. Using a hairbrush with natural fibres will help to distribute the natural oils along the length of your hair for greater moisturisation along the hair strands, plus less oily build-up at the roots.

Having poor-quality hair extensions is one of the top reasons for damage and drying, and synthetic or overprocessed extensions are more like to become dry quicker. Lighter shades like a bright blonde may have been processed more to achieve the desired colour, and would therefore be more susceptible to dryness.

In the winter, your hair gets even drier, with cold air outside mixed with hot central heating. The cold air causes your hair cuticles to lift slightly, which means moisture won’t remain locked into the hair, and it will become drier. When your hair isn’t well moisturised, it’ll become dull and frizzy so make sure you combat the dryness with a really good conditioner.

When it comes to conditioners, avoid products with drying chemicals like alcohol denat, benzyl alcohol, and ethanol – but not all alcohols are bad! Some are fatty alcohols that are excellent moisturisers, so look for hydrating ingredients like cetyl, cetearyl, stearyl, and lauryl alcohols, which come from vegetable oils like coconut and palm kernels.

Oils

One of the easiest ways to bring your extensions back to life is with oils, replacing the natural oils your hair benefits from. But not all oils are right for your hair and extensions, as some can just coat the hair to mask the dryness temporarily but not actually do any repair. Using too much coconut oil can promote a protein build-up, making it brittle and prone to further damage from heat and styling. So what oils are best to use?

Coconut oil is full of hydrating omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E and can be helpful in the fight against dry hair – just don’t use it too often! Olive oil contains fatty acids and vitamin E, and emollients like oleic acid and squalene. Avocado oil is high in minerals, antioxidants, and fats which can help repair dry and damaged hair. Jojoba oil contains vitamins A, B, C, and E, plus minerals like zinc and copper. Argan oil is very moisturising, with a high vitamin E content and fatty acids that nourish the hair.

Treatments For Dry Hair Extensions

Mask

Gently brush your extensions to remove any tangles and knots.

Apply a hair conditioning mask to your dry hair, combing through to make sure all hair is covered. If you have tapes or nano-rings, make sure you don’t get any conditioner too close to the bonds as it can cause them to slip out. If you have clip-ins, the treatment can go all the way up to the clips.

If you are reviving non-permanent extensions, place them on a towel and allow them to soak in the conditioner.

Wash out the mask with a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner – wash thoroughly to prevent product build-up on the hair.

Apply a leave-in conditioner, moisture spray, and heat protection.

Let the hair dry naturally until about 80% dry, then dry and style as desired – but keep the temperature as low as possible!

Boiling Pot Method

This method, as the name suggests, uses boiling water – so best for extensions that can be removed like clip-ins.

Bring a small pan of water to a boil and pour it into a bowl. Add ten to twenty drops of your chosen oil – argan, coconut, and even extra virgin olive oil works well for this – plus two tablespoons of conditioner.

Place your dry extensions into the water and let them sit until the water is cool, then remove them and place them on a towel to dry overnight.

Hot Water Cleanse & Oil

Pour hot water into a bowl, with a small amount of sulphate-free shampoo. Place the extensions in the bowl and gently massage them until clean, then rinse.

Pour fresh hot water, with a few drops of natural oil and leave-in conditioner and place the extensions in the water again. Let the extensions sit in the oily water overnight.

Gently comb the next morning, while the extensions are still wet. Rinse with warm water and place on a towel to air dry.

Homemade Treatments

Honey

Honey is a humectant, meaning it draws moisture in – as hyaluronic acid does for your skincare.

Mix 4 tablespoons of honey with 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and mix until smooth. Apply to freshly shampooed, towel-dried hair. Leave the mixture on your hair for at least an hour before rinsing.

Avocado

Avocado is full of vitamins A, D, E, and B6, as well as protein and amino acids. Peel one ripe avocado and blend it, slowly adding water until you reach a creamy consistency. Again, apply to freshly shampooed and towel-dried hair and leave for an hour to let the oils fully penetrate the hair.

SPRING IN YOUR STEP: 4 MEN’S SHOES MUST HAVES FOR S/S 2023

Can you feel it? Do you see it? Dare we say, are you smelling it? Yep, warmer weather is on its way, and we couldn’t be happier. And just as the sun is soon to be peeping out from behind the clouds, so too will we be emerging from our hibernation shortly, blinking into the light and getting sartorially ready for spring.

Yep, we just can’t wait to be footloose and fancy free again. Actually, scrap that; though our feet will certainly be loose in spirit, they’re certainly not going to be naked and unadorned. Instead, to put a spring in our step, we’re stepping out wearing these 4 men’s shoes must haves for S/S 2023.

DRESSY SNEAKERS

If you’re looking for something which straddles a certain smartness that’s appropriate for both casual and more formal occasions, the fashion experts at marcnolan.com tell us that it’s all about inhabiting “the hybrid shoe/sneaker space”. They’ve adapted loafer styles into sneakers so you can get the “timeless dressy look of the loafer with the all day comfort of a sneaker”, and let’s be honest here, that fills a hole in your shoe rack that you’ve felt was gaping for a while now.

We’re a little obsessed with their Jasper shoe (pictured bottom left below) which is one of their best sellers and a really sophisticated yet subtle piece. The classic full-brogue wing-tip design with contrasting athletic striped sneaker sole is versatile and nimble for a variety of occasions. In summer, when you’re transitioning from a picnic to a more swanky evening affair, you’ll do so gracefully wearing these.

Other brands have similarly taken to this trend. Who What Wear recommend looking ‘’for suede styles with chunky soles this spring – a loafer perhaps – which would pair well with either tailoring or casual dress on the weekend.” For the modern, shape shifting man, this are wise words, indeed.

SLIDE & STEP

Eating some sliders in your sliders at a lazy, languid all-day barbeque, sliding back a few beers, laughing with friends before perhaps sliding into an old flame’s DMs…it’s what spring and summer evenings were made for. Now, do you slide on all your nights like this?

Later this spring and into summer, when things get back to normal (toes crossed), every man should have a pair of sliders in their warm-weather wardrobe, ideal for slipping on at a moment’s notice when the ‘pint?’ texts start to ping with increasing regularity. With uncovered toes and a free, unhurried feel, sliders are the perfect embodiment of what we’re all hoping for soon; a carefree, stress relieving kinda summer.

Oh, and you’ll be able to cross those toes more easily, too.

While classic Adidas sliders seemingly never go out of fashion, due to that suggestion of swagger they possess, we’re particularly fond of Birkenstocks. These guys have been tentatively stepping out onto virtual catwalks in recent months in anticipation of warmer, more outdoorsy times ahead, and boast blocky, primary colours and an elegant buckle, just in case you were worried that slipping on your sliders was a little too ‘dressed down’.

BOLD COLOURS TO BOOT

Speaking of bold, blocky colours, spring fashion is traditionally redolent of pastel shades, signalling the transition from the harsh winter to more optimistic times gradually and with first steps tentatively taken. However, we’re skipping all that ‘softly-softly’ stuff and going straight to bold, bright colours this season, desperate to grab positivity by the scruff of its neck and wring it out for all it’s worth. Hmmm, not the most positive image perhaps, but still…

The Fashion Gurus at FashionBeans predict that bold colours are going to be one of this season’s must haves and we couldn’t agree more. They explain that “British high street footwear store Clark [sic] has done so with its desert boot and Wallabee shapes (the dreamy clay is particularly striking) while Converse continues to change up its masterly Chuck 70 with more colours than a festival’s glitter booth. Just make sure you temper that colour pop with a neutral colour blocked pair of trousers or shorts”.

Sounds like sage advice to us; no one wants a colour overload, even when they’re wearing their funky new sunglasses.

CHUNKY SOLES

Short kings rejoice; chunky soled trainers were one of the key trends in both S/S 2021 womenswear and menswear, and are set to continue their meteoric rise and increasing ubiquity for this season and beyond. We can’t refute their promise, to give you the spring of a running shoe, the comfort of a trainer but the novelty of something new.

Particularly popular this season will be soles and shoes of contrasting, complementary colours – think monochrome, maroon and navy, or even silver and gold if you’re keen for a braggadocios entrance to the club once things are open once again.
