5 IDEAL WAYS TO FIND PEACE OF MIND ABOUT ELDERLY RELATIVES THIS SUMMER

Though it may not be coming home, summer is certainly out to play, with the searing hot days and warm balmy nights a world away from the traditional British high season of scattered showers and disappointment. While this is great news for most, spare a thought for the elderly, and by extension, the relatives who care for them. For them, summer can be a time of difficulty and stress, with uncomfortable temperatures leading to issues with mobility, rest and the rest. A few simple steps can offer a little reassurance, then. With this in mind, here are 5 IDEAL ways to find peace of mind about elderly relatives this summer.

KEEPING COOL

Prevention, not cure, of course. Keeping cool, then, is the best way to fight off the dangers of the summer sun. Most importantly, recommend that outdoor activities be confined to early morning and late afternoon slots, when the sun isn’t blazing quite so strongly. Even then, keeping in the shade is a must. Get some fans installed – standing or desk – in each room your elderly relative inhabits most regularly, and offer assistance on how to turn them on, and up. Also check out their wardrobe (with permission, of course!) and dig out the more loose fitting, lightweight numbers in their collection. Wearing such items makes a real difference to body temperature. Finally, a simple mist spray bottle can make a real difference when sprayed gently on the neck or inner wrist.

WINDOW WISE

Many elderly people are less mobile than their glory days, and as such, have a particular room and chair they love to spend their days in. It’s vital then, that their preferred spot is properly protected from the sun. Although counterintuitive (and a little gloomy), a closed window and lowered blind when the sun is at its highest provides a much cooler environment than one flung open. You could even get some reflective material fixed to the window’s exterior to keep the room mild and pleasantly habitable.

REHYDRATION REMINDERS

Taking on enough fluids in the warmer months is imperative to avoiding dehydration. Regular calls or messages to elderly loved ones reminding them to drink a glass of water is a good idea, but if they don’t enjoy a plain glass, you could suggest pepping it up with a fruit cordial. A cup of tea offers rehydration, but suggest avoiding both alcohol and coffee, as they have the adverse effect. In terms of diet, salads and fruit contain lots of water, so replenish the fruit bowl in your relative’s house and fix up a leaf based lunch for them from time to time, too. A decent variety of rehydration methods will stop things from getting boring.

ALERTS AND ALARMS

Even if precautions are taken, of course there will be occasional mishaps; falls, a need for assistance, and so on. Fixing up your relative with an alarm, such as a Helpline Elderly Care Alarm available from Helpline, will notify you quickly as to any problems your elderly relatives may be experiencing. This will offer peace of mind from a different angle to the preventative measures suggested above.

KNOW THE SIGNS OF OVERHEATING

Lastly, it’s important for you, the carer, to be educated about the signs of overheating, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. These include cramps, confusion and weakness, as well as excessive sweating and a paler complexion than usual. By staying clued up on what to watch out for, and by advising your elderly loved one to do the same, a better peace of mind regarding their health can be achieved this summer.

4 SIMPLE STEPS TO HELP ACHIEVE THE IDEAL COMPANY CULTURE

It seems simple, but it’s a facet of business so often overlooked; a happy team is a productive one. When your employees are content, they are more creative and efficient; the positive effect of this on a businesses’ success cannot be overstated. This is not simply management speak. You won’t find any ‘blue sky thinking outside of the box’ here. Quite the opposite, actually. This is stating the obvious for posterity’s sake; to reaffirm what you already, inherently know. So if you think your team needs a boost, a pick me up or a shift in dynamic, then read on; here are 4 simple steps to help achieve the IDEAL company culture.

TRAIN IN HEALTH AND SAFETY

When it comes to the health and safety of your employees, you are not just morally obligated to do what you can, you are also legally obligated. If an employee is hurt on premises due to an easily avoidable error, you are liable for damages, and in some cases might even face criminal misconduct. Instead of getting into this predicament, offer extensive resources and training. Workplace injuries can also lead to lower morale, which in turn damages productivity.

Have key employees take health and safety courses like those offered Phoenix Health & Safety to become accredited by IOSH, NEBOSH, and Construction Skills. Other options include offering on-site first aid training to a wider number of your employees, as well as conducting regular health and safety inspections. The more you do to protect your employees, the better your company culture will become.

HELP THEM TO GROW INDEPENDENTLY

There are myriad different ways to help your employees further their qualifications. You could sponsor their education and pay some or all of their tuition fees. Equally, financing staff to get a degree through attending night school or sending them to attend a course will show that you care about their personal development. If your team does not want to go back to full-time education, or even part-time, consider paying for workshops and classes onsite. Whatever the preferred route, fostering a sense of independent, professional development will give employees the tools they need to better themselves, and in the process, your business.

FLEXIBLE WORKING HOURS

The 9-5 world is officially outdated and working hours are something all offices need to rethink. Consider the extremes; do you need them at all? Working from home, finishing early on Fridays, using flexi hours to accommodate for team member’s commitments outside of work; these are all options which grant more freedom to employees and in doing so, give them a sense of freedom which promotes creativity and critical thinking. Autonomy, it turns out, can be extremely beneficial to a business.

CREATE A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT

The ebb and flow of office productivity often seems to be bending to the whim of external forces, with scant regard for the will of the workers themselves. Well, there might be more than a modicum of truth in the belief that the dark arts can play a part in workplace efficiency. There are a host of hacks an office can implement which, while seeming innocuous, can have a huge impact on everything from staff wellbeing to turnover and much more besides.

Here are a few small adjustments you can make to improve the office environment :

  • Adding mirrors to maximise natural light
  • Adding air-purifying plants to improve air quality
  • Adding art pieces for extra stimulation
  • Improving the break room by adding seating, as well as more appliances so that your workers can bring food from home.
  • Offering optional training and opportunities on a community bulletin (either online or in-office).
  • Having a space dedicated to studying

With the help of celebrity beauty stylist and cofounder of The Glam App Joey Maalouf here are 6 IDEAL summer beauty tips you need in your life.

Keep It Simple

Start with a face primer to ensure your face makeup doesn’t move all day. Indeed, a face primer creates a smooth canvas for makeup, helping it apply evenly and last longer. It can also blur imperfections, minimize pores, and control shine, enhancing the overall appearance of the skin and ensuring a flawless finish that withstands the day’s demands.

Then apply a tinted moisturisers (matching the color to your chest) with an SPF already added. Combining moisturiser, tint, and sun protection into one product saves time and simplifies your skincare and makeup routine – in the summer months, this makes life so much easier when you just want to get up and go outside.

Moreover, a tinted moisturizer with SPF ensures that you are applying sun protection evenly across your face, as the tint helps to indicate where you’ve applied the product. Tinted moisturizers with SPF tend to have a lighter formula compared to traditional foundations, which is beneficial for those who prefer a more natural look or have sensitive skin that may react to heavier makeup in the summer months. Finally, since the product is multifunctional, you might be more inclined to use it daily, ensuring consistent sun protection.

This said, remember that tinted moisturizer with SPF often provides insufficient protection because it’s applied too thinly, has lower SPF, lacks broad-spectrum coverage, and is not reapplied regularly as recommended for effective sun protection.

Use Cream Blush

Cream blush on the apples of the cheeks looks the most natural in the summer sun and gives the skin a fresh flush. Indeed, cream blush tends to blend seamlessly into the skin, providing a more natural, dewy finish compared to powder blush. This is definitely desirable in the summer when you might prefer a lighter, more radiant look.

We also love that cream blushes are buildable, allowing you to control the intensity of the color. This is ideal for summer when you might want a sheer wash of colour during the day and a more intense look for the evening.

Give Your Eye Makeup Some Staying Power

Summer heat often leads to sweating, which can cause regular eye makeup to smudge or run. Use eye shadows and liners that are water-resistant so that you don’t have to worry about it fading or falling down your face halfway through the day. Water-proof mascara is a must, especially if you’re wearing them on the bottom lashes! Whether you’re hitting the pool, the beach, or just enjoying outdoor activities, water-resistant makeup won’t wash away easily, allowing you to enjoy your day without having to worry about panda eyes.

Make Your Lashes Pop

When it comes to lash extensions, achieving a natural look is essential. You want your lashes to blend seamlessly with your own, and that’s where natural lash extensions come in. These extensions are expertly applied to enhance your eyelashes, ensuring they look beautifully long and full while maintaining a natural appearance.

If you prefer false eyelashes, it goes without saying that summer heat and humidity can make it challenging to keep fake lashes in place. To help them stay always ensure your natural lashes are clean and free of oils. Use a gentle cleanser or micellar water to remove any residue. Also, apply a lash primer to your natural lashes to create a better base for the adhesive.

Say Hello to Blotters

Face Blotters are your new best friend. They remove all unneeded grease and shine without adding any product. Keep a pack of blotting papers in your bag for easy access throughout the day.

Be sure to choose the right blotting paper for your skin type. Some are infused with ingredients like salicylic acid for acne-prone skin or green tea for soothing.

Go Sheer

Keep lips sheer with a touch of shine. By doing so you’ll need minimal touchups. Sheer lip glosses are typically lighter and less sticky than other types of lip products, making them more comfortable to wear in hot and humid weather. Moreover, some sheer lip glosses come with SPF, offering an extra layer of protection against the sun’s harmful UV rays, which can damage the delicate skin on your lips.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: P.F CHANG’S ASIAN TABLE – IDEAL FOR COCKTAILS & QUICK LIGHT BITES

When the restaurant description reads ‘Asian food’, alarm bells tend to ring. It is, after all, a pretty whopping place.

Food though, it seems, brings everything and everyone that little bit closer. You could be eating pelmeni in Siberia one day, then traverse the seven day,  8’986km train ride to China, and enjoy its not too distant cousin jiaozi. Still hungry, you hop on a plane to Japan for a few gyoza, and on the return leg take in Korean mandu, Uzbek chuchvara and end up in Turkey, enjoying some manti. Tens of thousands of miles, abundant cultures; and cuisine a unifying thread which runs through all of them.

And if you don’t fancy racking up all of those miles, instead wanting to compress a continent into one manageable, affordable place, then you could do a lot worse than P.F. Chang’s Asian Table.

IDEA

Apparently there are over 200 P.F. Chang’s restaurants in the USA alone, but this is the first outpost of the popular bistro brand to land here in the U.K. Sure, you could eat more handsomely in nearby Chinatown, for less, but P.F. Chang’s Asian Table provides a safe, clean dining option with efficiency at its core.

LOCATION

This inaugural branch in the UK is close to Covent Garden, bordering the theatre district, and as such there is an emphasis on pre-theatre dining or recovery from shopping; the smooth, adept service a perfect fit for the demands of the on-the-move customer.

ATMOSPHERE

The crowd inside is ever changing, and service is fluid to match. The first hour was spent in the company of an all female dining crowd, drinking cocktails post work or post shopping. On the dot of 9pm, groups of young bearded Muslim men arrived in droves. We soon realised it’s Ramadan, sunset is 8.50 and they were straight in there for iftar, the post sunset meal. P.F. Chang’s makes a lot of being halal – rare for a place with an East Asian bent – and the ever shifting demographic of the crowd highlighted the restaurant’s something-for-everyone approach.

Such a place lives and dies by the smoothness of service; here it’s like silk. Wait staff are incredibly attentive; a few grains of rice escaped from the bowl were swiftly swept away. When a chopstick fell, a replacement was immediately conjured up. And upon seeing us commit a dining table faux pas of fingers in the teeth, P.J. Chang branded toothpicks appeared from nowhere. Smooth stuff indeed.

DRINK

Although some of the cocktails on offer were just plain bizarre – soy sauce mixer anyone? – the Luck & Fortune (gin, Thai basil, kumquat jam) was excellent, with no evidence of actual jam, the addition of Thai basil bringing real zing and purpose. The Fizu was summery, with a pleasing blend of sparkling sake and fresh cucumber, offering refreshment on a balmy night. House wines clock in around the £20 mark, which is excellent value for, well, anywhere in Central London.

FOOD

An eclectic menu for an eclectic customer base, with something to please everyone around a packed table. The dynamite shrimp is their signature dish, and people were having it all over the restaurant. The heavy coating of spicy mayo overwhelmed the otherwise tasty shrimp a little, but nonetheless, a good dish. A serving of chicken lettuce wraps was more successful; a tender chicken, mushroom and spring onion mix invited you to fashion your own lettuce wrap; the interaction an enjoyable touch.

For mains, Mongolian beef; tender beef slices with frankly huge spring onions, provided crunch and texture, and worked well, but the caramelised sauce was a little too much of the former, and not enough of the latter. Pepper steak had been marinated thoughtfully, with a pleasing heat and tenderness owing to the process.

The downstairs floor is devoted to P.F. Chang’s ‘Pastry Lab’, where desserts are served at a counter. Perhaps this is inspiration from, or designed for, the American diner stepping out solely with dessert in mind, but it felt slightly out of place here and was sparsely populated. Perhaps a bigger push on social media (their dishes are eminently instagrammable) would help spread the word. The banana spring rolls dreamt up in the lab, however, rounded off the meal pleasingly.

WHY GO

For those wishing to eat well, comfortably and quickly, without having to span a continent or even a capital’s city centre, P.F. Chang’s offers a warm, generous welcome and enjoyable Asian bites. What’s more, you don’t need to worry about bringing your passport.

4 IDEAL BENEFITS OF PAINTABLE WALLPAPER

0

Textured, paintable wallpaper used to be a thing associated with old people’s homes, caravans and the smell of overcooked cabbage. But due to its versatility, adaptability and ease of application, it has recently been making something of a comeback. Expect, then, to be stroking and prodding the walls with increasing regularity in the coming months. To keep ahead of the game and abreast of growing trends, here are 5 IDEAL benefits of printable wallpaper.

A BLANK CANVAS

One of the main pleasures of paintable wallpaper is that if the wall is white and textured, it will look pristine and perfect without a drop of paint. However if you do wish to paint, then a textured, paintable wallpaper is entirely accommodating, too. It’s important to note that specifically made paint is not obligatory for such wallpaper, contrary to the advice of some. All in all, it grants a freedom to change your mind, colour wise, which traditional wallpaper does not.

NO NEED FOR PRIMER

To prime or not to prime, that is the question every DIYer defers to Google when undertaking a new painting project. Well, in the case of printable wallpaper, primer isn’t necessary. In fact, it’s to avoided, as it can fill in the ridges, something that would lead to the lessening of the textures of the paintable wallpaper. The perfect excuse to steer clear, then.

REIMAGINATION WITHOUT RENOVATION

If your paintable wallpaper suffers the usual surface damage, it can be pretty hard to get it looking shipshape again without a total overhaul. Paintable, in general though, can be repaired more easily, accommodating a little touch up with good grace. If you fancy larger, wholesale changes, for example a colour change, there’s no need to rip it all up and start again.

IT GLOSSES OVER IMPERFECTIONS

If your walls have holes from pictures or some cracks and other imperfections, you may of course want to cover them. Well, you could do worse than considering paintable wallpaper. Because of its thickness, it helps cover the defects and the discolorations with a stylish and elegant tactility.

4 IDEAL REASONS TO VISIT BERGEN

Tucked away in the south west of the country, Bergen is Norway’s second largest city. It was once the capital of Norway and a past seat of the Hanseatic league, a historic trading block which in its heyday comprised of nearly 200 sea and inner cities. Today the city still plays an important economic and cultural role in the country. It not only is Norway’s busiest fishing port, it has even held the title of the European City of Culture. With colourful clapboard houses, a wonderful wharf, easy access to the fjords and a culture worth getting to know, Bergen is ticketed to be one of the hottest city break destinations in the coming years. And with a new biweekly route from Liverpool to Bergen recently announced, now’s the perfect time to share these 4 IDEAL reasons to visit Bergen.

IT’S EASY TO GET TO

As mentioned, at the start of this month, in collaboration with Scandinavia’s largest regional airline Widerøe, Liverpool John Lennon Airport announced the arrival of a new biweekly route – one that travels to and from Bergen. As such, the city has never been easier to reach. From 17th August 2018, the airline will transport passengers directly between Liverpool and Bergen.

WELL CONNECTED

One of Bergen’s primary attractions is the natural landscape that surrounds it. Nicknamed the ‘gateway to the fjords,’ there is no better place in Scandinavia from which to traverse the region’s stunning geography. While, Bergen was once the country’s capital, today its status as one of the nation’s major cities has made it one of the best connected locations in the area. Indeed, it is somewhat of a hub for Scandinavia’s airlines, meaning there is no shortage of connecting flights to the region’s most popular tourist hotspots. Indeed, Oslo and Helsinki are just a single flight away, so too is the rough far north, which plays host to both the Northern Lights and the Midnight Sun.

THE HANSEATIC WHARF

Established in the 14th century, the old Hanseatic Wharf is one of the most iconic places in Bergen. Its higgledy-piggledy wooden buildings have become synonymous with Bergen’s cultural heritage and as such, it boasts the title of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Hidden behind the colourful buildings is a labyrinth of alleyways and courtyards where you’ll find many boutiques and galleries to peruse.

THE FISH MARKET

Besides the wharf, the fish market is perhaps Bergen’s most famous spot. It has been around since the 1200s, where back in the day salt cod was major business. Today, the fish market is still bustling with business and is also a major attraction for foodies looking for a fishy fix. The beautifully rugged coastline surrounding Bergen brings in the best of the sea’s bounty daily –  a chef and diner’s dream, indeed. A trip to the outdoor fish market in the middle of the city center is a must. Also, in 2012 the indoor Fish Market- Mathallen opened where there are permanent shops and restaurants indoors and are open all year.

HOTEL REVIEW: 48LEX, NEW YORK – AN IDEAL BOUTIQUE IN MIDTOWN EAST

Find yourself in the Big Apple, hungry for a bite, and even the greediest, most scrutinizing soul will likely be satisfied. Such is the choice, the size, the ambition and generosity of the place, that it’s impossible not to get sated. This, of course, is keenly felt in the hospitality department, with food of all flavours from all corners on all corners, and hotels, motels and hostels catering to every whim and want. What can we say about the 48LEX, then? Well, this. It stands out, high above the pack. In fact it may just be our favourite hotel in New York. And that’s not with the hyperbolic voice so beloved of the city. We’re not exaggerating.

LOCATION

Standing proudly where 48th Street and Lexington Avenue meet, often colloquially abbreviated as “Lex”, the hotel is in the thick of the thickest of things; a mere matter of moments away from Grand Central Station in the beating heart of the East Side.

Indeed, despite its sprawling, intimidating size, Manhattan is an easy city to get around on foot. Walking the streets of the island is one of the most enjoyable things to do. And if you do happen to get lost, the hotel’s name makes remembering where you’re staying simple.

Needless to say you can get anywhere easily from 48Lex. From Broadway, Times Square, and the Empire State Building, it’s the perfect base to explore everything Manhattan has to offer.

ATMOSPHERE & STYLE

Sleek and stylish, this upscale boutique hotel exudes class on arrival, with light streaming in to the lobby. Perhaps a little functional, corporate feeling even, but you’re not here to sleep in the lobby.

As such you’re quickly whisked away to the second floor, to Lexicon Lounge, to complete the check in process. This is the heart and hub of the hotel, where it feels like things could go down. Comfy couches, modern art hanging on the walls, the lot. You can imagine striking deals or making connections in this Lounge; a theatre for dreams to be realised, American or otherwise.

ROOMS

So many New York hotels leave you asking: where are the windows? We’ve stayed in a fair few in our short time on earth that feel more like a closet cupboard than a hotel. Well, in the words of the big dude upstairs, let there be light. And amazing views of Manhattan. Although we’re not sure the latter made the Big Book’s final edit.

The floor to ceiling windows that overlook Lexington Avenue let natural light flow into the room, and in turn lets your gaze turn outwards; an absolute highlight. When you’re in New York you want to feel like you’re in New York, like you’re living the high life; big and bold. You can lie in bed at night and watch the twinkling lights of the city. And that’s a deal breaker.

The sense of the room being your own private apartment (with of course all the benefits of a hotel) is another huge plus point. With a kitchenette and fully stocked bar, you can play the host with a sense of sophistication and privacy. The full-size bottle of wine welcome was, erm, most welcome; if you’ve ever tried to buy a bottle of wine late at night, you’ll know its nearly impossible. State liquor laws limit the sale of wine and spirits to liquor stores  – they cannot sell alcohol from midnight to 9 a.m. daily, except on Sundays when sales are only allowed from noon until 9 pm. However bars can serve until 4am. Too complicated to get your head around? Try figuring it out after drinking that bottle.

To continue the sense of being spoiled, the bathroom toiletries are Beekman 1802. Perhaps not all that exclusive, as they seem to supply all the luxurious New York hotels, but still excellent.

SERVICE & FACILITIES

From early morning pastries to evening cocktails, ‘The Lexicon Lounge’ is the life and soul of the place, and plays host to all the refreshing and imbibing you’ll likely do here. A nightly wine and cheese reception is held, and after the complimentary wine hour – once you’ve had you’re fill – it turns into a guest-only cocktail bar; no riff-raff (other than yourself) allowed. There’s also a 24 hour fitness centre available, free of charge, to guests; perfect for those have overindulged on the aforementioned cheese and wine. Everyone, then.

FOOD & DRINK

Breakfast is a standard continenal(ish) affair. Pastries and coffees are served in the Lexicon Lounge every morning, but you’d be crazy to confine yourself to any hotel for a meal when there’s so much quality grub on your doorstep. Instead, eat lightly or skip entirely and head for one of the many Manhattan eateries famous for their monster breakfasts. We particularly love Pershing Square Cafe, just a short walk away; stacks of all-American pancakes, all you can drink coffee; what more could you want? Except a long lay down afterwards, of course. Back to the hotel, we go.

Additionally, The Lexington Brass Bar & Grill, on the ground floor, is open late, and ideal for those who have the late night munchies that inevitably follow a night out on the town.

WHY GO

48LEX sits in possibly the best location a visitor to the world’s most famous city is likely to find. But that’s not all. The hotel’s suave vibe and room’s floor to ceiling windows serve to let you know you’ve truly arrived, that you’re in New York, and ready to take it on and all in. And that’s the best feeling you could ask for.

4 IDEAL REASONS 21 YEAR OLD SCOTCH WHISKEY IS SO LOVELY

If you’ve happened to glance at the news in the last couple of years, you’re sure to be aware that a millennial drinking revolution is afoot. While many are choosing to drink less, or none at all, those who do still indulge in a tipple are opting for bevvies which fall under the ‘craft’ or ‘premium’ category with growing enthusiasm, choosing to pay more, and drink less.

And while that would’ve once sounded like a teenage me’s worst nightmare, this can only be a good thing; our taste buds and livers are doing leaps of gratitude, in both the short and long term.

To paraphrase Munchies, one of our favourite websites – the days of young people drinking shitty beer and crappy vodka are over. Indeed, choosing a tipple which makes a statement of restraint and sophistication seems to be the way forward, with that same beloved website declaring Scotch Isn’t Just an Old Man Drink Anymore. It seems that the youth are starting to appreciate this ‘liquid sunshine’ drink again.

While there are myriad different brands and brews around, not all scotches are made equal, Maturity (the drink here, not the consumer) strongly speaks to the quality of a particular scotch, and so, for many scotch lovers, a 17 year old scotch may not match up to a 21 year old scotch. With this in mind, here are 4 IDEAL reasons a 21 year old whiskey is so lovely.

IT’S RARE

A 21 year old scotch is not something you simply find on a shelf in every bar. With a rare bottle of scotch, you know that you are getting something special. You’ll be sipping on sophistication that is not typical of all varieties of the famed liquor, but only unique to a 21 year old scotch whisky. You can count on a rare bottle of scotch being a fine drink, which means that it evokes luxurious pleasure.

IT’S AGED TO PERFECTION

Age matters when talking scotch. The general notion is that the older a scotch is, the better, or in other words, old scotch is unequivocally delicious, thanks to aging that enhances the taste. It’s not simply aging that does the trick though, rather its being aged in oak barrels which typically break down the rougher flavors of alcohol. The longer the alcohol ages in the barrels, the smoother the scotch will be; helping avoid that embarrassing, hardly ‘grown up’ wince after each sip.

IT HAS A HUGE AMOUNT OF CHARACTER AND COMPLEXITY

A scotch whisky, like the Glenlivet 21, aged for a minimum of 21 years, is rich in character, complexity and subtlety.

  • Appearance: Aged in an oak cask, the scotch will be darker and more intense than younger versions, with a deep copper colour, or golden hue. Colour is generally the best indicator of what to expect in your scotch in terms of flavor and taste.
  • Nose: A 21 year old dark scotch is associated with rich and luscious aromas. You can get some divine notes that could be airy and delicate as well. Expect a deep and well-balanced mix of aromas of aged oak, ripe fruit, leather and toffee.
  • Palate: Also lovely in a 21 year old scotch is the complex tasting experience; a palate full and rich, with a variation of core flavors, including roasted nuts (hazelnut, walnut), spices (ginger, cinnamon), burnt sugar and some degree of tangy oak.
  • Finish: You can anticipate a finish that is long and sweet, and malty, with warm spices and woody notes.

IT’S A GOOD INVESTMENT

The whiskey market is booming and whisky cask investments have seen a real increase in recent years, helping many investors get returns of up to 12% per annum.

Indeed, whiskey makes for a wise investment. As Essential Magazine explains “unlike cars, wine, and watches, whisky maintains its quality if left unopened. This means that collectors can keep hold of their best bottles for as long as they need to see the best possible returns without concern for the product ageing”.

So why invest in a 21 year old whiskey? As the Guardian writes “as new releases of aged whisky become increasingly rare, the importance of age and value has grown”. They add that the older the age and the earlier the vintage, the better – even relatively poor quality old-aged scotch is becoming more valuable”.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Perfectly aged scotch, like a 21 year old whiskey, is a fine spirit to collect, share and enjoy. It is truly lovely because it is not only rare, but it is matured beautifully, with character and complexity. What’s more, a closed bottle of whisky can even be good for 100 years, meaning you don’t have to get stuck into the bottle the moment you buy it, but rather keep it saved for a special occasion.

5 IDEAL ELEMENTS THAT MAKE A GREAT HOTEL

Here at IDEAL we’re often asked to recommend a good hotel. And although this may seem straight forward, it’s a question fraught with difficulty. Everyone’s different, with a diversity in taste, price point and idea of what or what isn’t ‘essential’. Some prefer quirky and unique boutique hotels, others a luxury five star hotel with all the amenities to boot.

All of which got us thinking about what makes a good hotel. About which values and necessities cross all borders of personal preference. While taste, location and particulars differ from person to person, there are some factors that are at the heart of any good hotel. So, here are 5 IDEAL elements that make a great hotel.

THE WELCOME

The warm smile, those delicious drinks and that refreshing towel you’re offered while they find your reservation –  a great hotel starts with a great welcome. First impressions, after all, are everything. How you’re received when you first step into the hotel matters a great deal; it’s your first chance to make a judgment of the hotel and can set the mood for the entire stay. It’s the difference between overlooking that stray hair in the plug and it causing utter disgust and associated bad reviews on TripAdvisor.

A hotel can have all the amenities in the world, but if their welcome and service is anything less than phenomenal, the whole experience can be ruined. We’re not just talking about service with a smile here, rather the all encompassing trait called “hospitality personality,” which every hotelier should have. It’s when a person can quietly makes guests feel comfortable and important and have a natural joie de vivre, kindess and graciousness about them, coupled with the sense that they’re not overdoing it. Easy peasy, then.

We keep banging on about first impressions and alongside the welcome, it’s important to make the entrance look inviting too. Taking care of that first impression is something called ‘kerb appeal’ and even the most innocuous elements can play a part in the overall impact of that first impression. An unruly front entrance, broken gates, a tatty fence or dirty doors; these can all be a major turn-off.

Giving the exterior of your hotel a facelift and adding an attractive custom welcome neon sign can cement a positive impression so early on in the process. After that, the customer is putty in your hands.

A CLOUD LIKE BED

After a long day of sightseeing, there’s nothing quite like falling into a five-star hotel bed with a zillion pillows that are so fluffy, you wonder if the hotel staff would notice if one accidentally fell into your suitcase. Sumptuous soft sheets with a high thread count, plush pillows, fluffy feather mattress toppers; a hotel bed is as close to sleeping on a cloud as us mere mortals can get.

From boutique joints to international brands, the best hotels spend a lot of time and money carefully crafting cloudlike combinations, to guarantee guests a sleep experience like no other. We’re not kidding, Westin Hotels & Resorts spent over a year testing hundreds of mattresses, pillows and bed linen to create their signature ‘Heavenly Bed’. And the night’s sleep it provides make that level of research totally worthwhile.

SPA-LIKE BATHROOM FACILITIES

Once a basic amenity, the hotel bathroom is just as important to guests as the bedroom when it comes to choosing the ideal hotel. Yep, it’s all about oversized tubs and full body jets, rain shower heads and double sinks. Expensive aromatherapy soaps that awaken your senses and fluffy white bathroom robes don’t hurt either. Basically, a great hotel bathroom should be like a spa experience and you should feel pampered even if you’re alone.

Hotels are spending more time focusing on getting the hotel bathroom right, especially since many people now have upgraded, luxury bathroom experiences at home, with a range of fancy add-ons and high-quality items, just like you can see here.  It’s therefore essential for a hotel to go that extra mile and make their bathrooms a spa-like sanctuary for guests.

A BREAKFAST BUFFET

Is there anything better when you’re on holiday than letting loose on a hotel’s breakfast buffet? It’s one of the finest pleasures of the hotel experience, and the truly great buffet breakfast turns a sometimes mundane daily ritual into the ultimate gastronomic experience.

We love the ones spread over a vast dining space, with multiple ‘cooking stations’ devoted to different global influences. And while the obligatory omelette station serving tender and fluffy eggs, and the sweet waffle section, laden with every topping imaginable are integral to a great hotel breakfast, one that presents the local cuisine, offering guests exciting and enticing opportunities to try new tastes, trumps them all. And for those who have overindulged the previous night, that freshly-squeezed juice, trios of smoothies and detox tonics bring a feeling of wellness to a worn out mind.

MORE THAN ONE CHAIR

We’re being serious. If you’re travelling with a companion and there’s only one easy chair in the room, what’s the other guest meant to do? Perch on the end of the bed? Nah, we’re not having that. Indeed, having more than one chair in the room highlights the hotel’s character instantly, showing thoughtfulness and an attention to detail that only the best hotels have.

5 IDEAL FACTS THAT ALL RUM LOVERS NEED TO KNOW

Are you a rum lover? Us too! But does your knowledge extend little further than dark, light, spiced, Captain Morgan or Malibu, and let’s get sloshed? If the answer is no, than it’s time to get a touch more acquainted with your favourite tipple. So, pour yourself a glass of the best rum in India like Murano from Hermes, settle in and get ready for a good read. Here are 5 IDEAL facts that all rum lovers need to know.

WORLD’S FIRST SPIRIT

Yes, you read it right! Your adoration of this little liquor is not misplaced. Rather, it’s historic. Rum is believed to be the first and oldest branded spirit to have ever been made and therefore consumed. Though it traces its roots back to ancient India and China, it’s first distillation took place in one of the sugarcane plantations of the Caribbean in the 17th century. This happened when the plantation workers found out that molasses could be fermented into alcohol. Moreover, unlike other spirits, rum was not used for medicinal purposes and was consumed only for pleasure. Chin chin!

USED AS CURRENCY

Perhaps a surprising tidbit for you, or perhaps stating the obvious, but during the 18th century, Rhode Island rum was considered so valuable that it was used as a type of currency in Europe. The sailors and pirates of the region used to test its authenticity by mixing it with gunpowder, allegedly. If there was a successful ignition, it meant the rum was authentic. Don’t try that one at home, folks!

HAS MANY NICKNAMES

It’s not just the taste of rum that comes in all varieties, shapes and sizes; its name too has an interesting range of pseudonyms. Some of them include Kill-Devil, Demon Water, Navy Neaters, Grog, Barbados Water, Pirates Drink and not to miss Nelson’s Blood, which has a particularly bizarre story behind it. Let’s unveil that in the next point.

USED TO PRESERVE VICE ADMIRAL HOATIO NELSON’S BODY

Believe it or not, but according to British legends, the body of Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson was preserved in a cask of rum prior to being shipped back to England, essentially pickling him in the world famous liquor. Since then, Nelson’s blood has been added to the list of nicknames given to rum.

USED FOR SHAMPOO

Ever felt particularly thirsty in the shower and felt compelled to drink the shampoo? Nope, us neither, but that might have been different had we been alive in the 19th century. Indeed, rum was used as a type of shampoo by many during the 1800s.  Today, some still believe that rum can make their hair thicker and prevent hair loss, though we think that this is a waste of rum. After all, we’d rather be pissed and bald than sober and hirsute, right? Right?

NATIONAL RUM DAY

Yep, a sixth fact because, well, the spirit of the occasion has gone to our heads. Raise your class, then, to a whole day dedicated to commemorating the best of the spirits; August 16th, National Rum Day.

This year, National Rum Day is organized at Miami beach where many of the world’s great rum enthusiasts will come together and share their love for this spirit.

5 IDEAL MARKETING TIPS FOR NICHE BUSINESSES

When it comes to getting your voice heard within the confines of a niche industry, most marketers are well aware of the fact that it is anything but easy. And of course, the more specific the message, the more difficult it can be to reach a target audience.

Having said that, such a situation can be turned to your advantage, with less competitors meaning greater demand for supply and customers willing to listen more attentively and pay more.

From doing your research thoroughly from the very start to knowing how to use promotional gifts in the best possible way, there are many unique ways to get your message across with optimum clarity. So whether you’re dealing with promotional gifts in Manchester or hyper localised branding on an island (population: 1) in the Hebrides, this advice is for you; our 5 IDEAL marketing tips for niche businesses.

KNOW YOUR MARKET INSIDE AND OUT

This should go without saying but we’ll say it nonetheless; you need to know your target niche market inside out for best results. You simply can’t afford to be lazy while researching your specific target market when the pool of people willing to spend their pounds is, by definition, slimmer. The aspect of segmentation is crucial since the smaller your market, the better you have to know all of your customers across the board. Simples.

SOLVE YOUR CUSTOMER’S PROBLEMS

This may sound like underlining the obvious, but in the case of a niche product, it certainly goes a lot deeper than that. Ask yourself questions like “What is my USP?” and “How is my product fulfilling a need that is not being met by my peers in the market?”. Hence, it is essential that you think about your customer first, as once their needs are met, their loyalty is more likely.

ASSESS THE STRENGTHS OF SPECIFIC MARKETING CHANNELS

This basically means that you need to rethink the way you spread the word about your business. This includes thoroughly analysing the potential ROI of your marketing strategies in order to ensure that not only are you reaching out to your target audience, but the manner in which you do it is cost effective and time efficient, too. When marketing your business, consider getting professionals on the job, an eCommerce SEO agency would be a good choice.

Social media advertising may work better for you than you think, for instance, or a more organic, word-of-mouth manner could be the ideal fit for you.

Consider all options, such as using video brochures or even old school tactics like email marketing and leave nothing off the table. And when designing your ads make sure you are proficient in Facebook ad design.

Before you get started on your Facebook ad, AmazeLaw suggest “to identify your business with the type of goal you would like to achieve” as Facebook offers eleven different marketing goals based on what you want your ad to accomplish. These include:

Lead generation
Video views
App installs
Engagement
Reach
Brand awareness
Store visits
Catalog sales
Conversions
Messages
Traffic

REALISE THE IMPORTANCE OF PPC ADVERTISING

This cannot be stressed enough. Since it is a niche product, the aspect of a paid search is essential. PPC is a perfect fit for particular niche market campaigns. Not only do you get your message directly to the right people, but you can also optimise your campaigns for mobile users too.

You can talk to media experts in an independent PPC agency in UK to fully understand the complexities of this method of advertising and, in the right hands, take your business to the next level.

STAY ABREAST OF YOUR COMPETITORS

An aspect all too often overlooked, we think. So importantly though, you most certainly need to know what your competitors are up to at all times if you want to stay ahead. Not only will it give you a good insight into where you stand, but you’ll be able to take future decisions much more efficiently too.

Certain software tools such as WordStream Advisor, Adbeat and the like can go a long way in offering valuable insights into the particular marketing strategies of your competitors. And that includes figuring out exactly who your customers, and competitors, are. This is the case with majority of Global Merchandise Stores that offer products with a niche or limited appeal. So do remember to keep this particular aspect in mind at all times.

5 IDEAL REASONS TO GET A STATIC CARAVAN

As we’ve already covered the reasons for getting a touring caravan, we thought it only fair to write about static caravans too. Different strokes for different folks; different vans for different mans, as the old saying goes. We’ve teamed up with Flogas, a top supplier of camping gas bottles to holiday sites across the UK, to bring you 5 IDEAL reasons to get a static caravan.

IT’S CONVENIENT

For many holidaymakers, having accommodation in one place makes the entire get-away more convenient and relaxing. Rather than expecting the unexpected each and every morning, the static caravan strikes a fine balance between breathing in fresh air every morning and knowing where you’re laying your head each night. When you’re at home and decide you want a quick getaway, all you’ll need to do is pack some clothes and essentials and enjoy the drive to your secure holiday home, safe in the knowledge that things should be exactly as you found them.

A HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Typically, a static caravan has a more spacious, ‘home-like’ design than its touring siblings, too. Most have more room — in fact, some models can boast four bedrooms, fully fitted kitchens complete with integrated appliances, and the same kind of bathroom you’d expect to find in a hotel.

The people working at Carac.com.au can tell you how, with the right accessories, you can further enhance the comfort and functionality of your static caravan. From custom furnishings to advanced appliances, these additions can transform your space into a true home-away-from-home experience. Living in the lap of luxury, indeed.

OUTDOOR & INDOOR LIVING

Particularly pertinent if you’ve got little ones roaming around, static caravans provide a great compromise between outdoor living and indoor comfort. You’ll feel that sense of adventure (and the kids will love it too) of camping but there’s the security of a roof over your head at the end of night. We’ve all had holidays dampened by bad weather, and the joy of a camper van is that not even the rain can stop that feeling of being at one with nature. In fact, laying in bed hearing the patter of rain and knowing you’re amongst nature can be a thrill in its own right.

COOKING & EATING OUTSIDE

Speaking of outside living, there’s something about food cooked in the great outdoors that tastes even better than it does when cooked at home on a stovetop. Indeed grilling up something on a BBQ and dining alfresco offers something different than being stuck in a kitchen; from the distinct flavour of the grill marks to the sociability of it all. Owning a static caravan provides the perfect excuse to get your comedy apron on and your grill out at every available opportunity.

YOU CAN EARN SOME EXTRA CASH

Another bonus of owning a static caravan is the possibility for a little extra cash! If you’re not going to be using your static caravan for a month or so, it’s entirely possible to put it on the rental market temporarily. Pocket money earned, you’ll be able to splash out on all the ice creams and disposable barbeques that your heart desires on your next trip!

THE BOTTOM LINE

If you want the freedom of going on holiday without the need to plan much, whether it be a quick mid-week break or you find yourself at a loose end at the weekend, then a static caravan could be ideal for you. Need anymore persuading? If after reading this article you can’t wait to get your hands on a static caravan, we’d recommend visiting UK based marketplace caravansforsale.co.uk

4 IDEAL REASONS TO GET A TOURING CARAVAN

The great British staycation. What was once nae has recently and most affirmatively turned into yay where the question of holidaying at home is concerned. And what better way to experience the countryside at close quarters, to breathe in nature each morning and look deep into the stars at night than from the vantage point of a caravan?

And if you’re thinking about going on a caravanning adventure, we’ve teamed up with Flogas, a top supplier of camping gas bottles to holiday sites across the UK, to bring you 4 IDEAL reasons to get a touring caravan.

A REAL SENSE OF FREEDOM

Windows rolled down, Springsteen on the radio and nothing but the open road and a sense of endless possibilities in our hearts. Indeed, you get a real sense of freedom and adventure spending those warm, heady summer weeks driving around in a touring caravan. It’s a wonderful way to explore parts of the UK you’re yet to exeprience in an exciting and relatively affordable manner.

THROW OFF THE SCHEDULE SHACKLES

If planning is not exactly your forte, and holidays seem to be constantly in the discussion phase, then a touring caravan may suit your perennial procrastination just perfectly. On nothing more than a whim, you can choose to hit the high road and decide on the destination once the aforementioned Bruce is on the stereo and the pedal is very much to the metal.

It’s almost as though you’re seconds from a holiday at any time; a wonderful, freewheelin’ feeling. Moreover, people who get bored easily and enjoy seeing new things are brilliantly suited to a touring caravan. Once you’re ready to see a new sight, simply pack up your gear and drive your caravan to a new campsite.

Psst, hey you rubbish planner! Bear in mind that many caravan sites close and shut down their facilities in the winter, so a little foresight is needed with a touring caravan.

IT’S CHEAPER THAN A STATIC CARAVAN

Without wishing to crush the spontaneity with practical considerations, it’s time we talk about money. Generally a touring caravan is cheaper than a static one. What’s more, you won’t have as many ground costs — maintenance and rent for instance — in comparison to a static caravan. It is important to check possible restrictions on keeping your touring caravan in your drive – every council has slightly different rules regarding this.

Bear in mind, too, the type of vehicle you own and if it’s strong enough to pull a caravan. Your vehicle will need to have an engine that is powerful enough to tow your caravan, particularly on the ascent. This is an added expense that you may not have considered when first investing in your touring caravan, so you’ll want to do your homework to avoid an unpleasant surprise.

A SENSE OF COMMUNITY

Gangs with a love of the open road? It’s not a notion solely confined to those in leather jackets with a love of causal violence. Indeed, the caravan community is an inclusive, vibrant affair; you’ll find ‘chapters’ all over the country ready to welcome you in. Such camaraderie means you’ll quickly have an established network of friends in different locations, all up for being your neighbour for the night, sharing a cold beer and stories of all things four wheeled and habitable. Lovely stuff.

4 IDEAL TIPS TO STRAIGHTEN YOUR HAIR WITHOUT HEAT

If you want poker straight hair, it’s tempting to reach for the blow dryer or flat iron everyday. However, we don’t have to tell you that over time, exposing your hair to such intense heat can cause so much damage. Straightners can cause hair loss and breakages leaving your locks looking thin and brittle. With this in mind, we’ve asked stylist to the stars Asgar Saboo to share IDEAL tips for heat-free straightening.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SHAMPOO

It all starts with changing up your hair-wash routine. Choose a shampoo and conditioner specifically made to smooth your hair; they’re designed to weigh down and moisturise your locks with lasting results. Post wash, apply leave-in conditioner or smoothing cream to maximise moisture. If your hair is really thick and curly, apply hair oil such as argan or macadamia. This will be absorbed fully into your hair, leaving your locks looking glossy and straight.

TOWEL DRY

To avoid using heat on your hair, it’s important to make the most out of towel drying. Regularly using a blow dryer on your hair can leave it dry and visibly damaged.  Use your towel slowly and gently, otherwise the friction will leave your hair looking frizzy and tangled.

BRUSH IT OUT

Once you’ve towel dried your hair until it’s left only slightly damp, you’ll need to throughly brush your hair. Separate your locks into manageable sections and brush it out using a wide tooth comb. Brush firmly downwards, pulling your hair tightly to force straight and stop it from curling up. Repeat this motion every few minutes until your hair is completely dry. Applying a small amount of smoothing product such as coconut oil or mousse just before your hair dries will discourage frizz and prevent those unwanted waves from creeping in.

WRAP IT IN A SLIK SCARF AT NIGHT

To preserve your silky smooth and straight style overnight, wrap a silk scarf around your hair just before bed, When you unravel it in the morning, your hair should look just as perfect as the night before, as if by magic.

7 Of The Best Ways To Enjoy Oysters

Oysters are considered one of the world’s most luxury foods.  They are low in fat, high in protein and are considered a good alternative to meat as they’re rich in iron. And most importantly, they’re god damned delicious.

In many European countries Oysters are traditionally served with mignonette – a condiment to accompany raw oysters. However, eat them in Asia and you’ll encounter wonderfully crunchy deep fried shallots for sweetness and a little chilli if you need some extra spice in your life.

Even a purist can appreciate a well dressed oyster, and with just two more weeks of having an ‘r’ in the month, it’s time to guzzle. With the help of Bohemia’s Head Chef Steve Smith, here’s 7 IDEAL ways to enjoy oysters.

ADD TEQUILA

Liven up your oysters with tequila; one for the bivalve and one for you. A tequila and lime mignonette can be easily made by mixing together 2 tablespoons of tequila, 2 tablespoons of lime, the zest of half a lime, 2 tablespoons of finely chopped shallot, 1 tablespoon of chopped coriander and a pinch of salt.  Mix it all together then serve with freshly shucked oysters; a real treat.

DEEP FRIED

You don’t have to feel obliged to eat oysters raw, as many chefs insist. Indeed, deep fried oysters make a great snack or accompaniment to a main course fish dish. Post shucking, cover your oysters in plain flour, beaten egg and bread crumbs then deep fry for 1-2 minutes until they’re crispy.

EAT THE THAI STYLE

Thai beach style oysters involving fully shucking a load, piling them high and enjoying raw with a variety of interesting dips. Think crispy shallots, a sweet chilli sauce, a punchy nahm phrik pao, fresh herbs like coriander, Chinese celery and chives, all served over ice. A few grains from sandy hands isn’t compulsory, but inevitable.

GRILL THEM

That smokey, moody taste of the barbeque certainly does no harm to the saline richness of oysters. In fact, it’s a match made in heaven. Shuck one and leave it in its flatter sided half shell – keeping the juices within, of course – then place on a hot barbeque grill. After a couple of minutes, remove (careful, that shell will be hot), and spoon over some spicy, sour Vietnamese dressing of MSG, limequat and chili. Oh, and plenty of crispy shallots. Perfect.

A TOUCH OF FIZZ

Oysters and Champagne are a classic pairing – one of the world’s finest – so why not add some fizz to your mignonette dressing to ramp up that sense of opulence and occasion?  To create the mignonette mix together Champagne vinegar, finely chopped shallots and cucumber, salt and pepper then allow to chill in the fridge. Add the real-deal Champagne to the mignonette just before serving to retain its fizz and vibrancy.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

If you want to keep the flavour minimal and maximise the majesty of the primary product, instead lightly warm the oyster through and simply serve with lemon juice.  If you prefer a saltier flavour as opposed to sour, add a teaspoon of seaweed butter on top of each oyster and warm for 3-4 minutes.

THE ALTERNATIVE

Ignore the naysayers about cheese and seafood having great animosity. In the right hands (yours, of course) they can really sing together. For a truly indulgent, alternative oyster dish, sprinkle Parmesan cheese over the oysters, drizzle with melted butter and season with pepper, then grill the oysters for a minute or so.
