5 IDEAL THINGS TO DO IN RENO, NEVADA

Vegas’ younger sibling, a seven hour drive north to the opposite side of Nevada state, certainly doesn’t live in the shadow of the City of Sin’s towering skyscrapers. Oh no, Reno has very much carved out its own niche. Indeed, though the Biggest Little City in the World’s downtown is built on the gambling industry, boasting 20 casinos, in recent years the city centre has undergone something of a renaissance, with extensive shopping options added and a more firm focus on ‘family’ fun. Something for everyone then, in these; our 5 IDEAL things to do in Reno, Nevada.

TAKE A SEAT AT THE TABLE IN ELDORADO

There’s no point beating about the bush, Reno is known for gambling nearly as famously as its same state cousin Las Vegas, with the downtown area still very much dedicated to the dice and flutter. Perhaps the best place to have a punt is Eldorado, a megacomplex with 815 gambling and 4’100 guest rooms, as well as several excellent restaurants and bars.

2016 saw the casino undergo a huge renovation project totalling to the tune of $50 million and it shows; it’s a sleek and sophisticated operation, indeed. Should you want to get familiar with slot and table games prior to arrival, saving yourself a fair bit of pocket and face in the process, then many online sites offer practice sessions with no financial commitment necessary.

RIVERWALK IT, TALK IT

Reno’s Riverwalk District is at the very heart of that urban regeneration (‘renogeneration’, does that work? Maybe not) we mentioned earlier. Beautification, they’re calling it, and what an apt description; a gorgeous section of town dedicated to hip restaurants, bars, galleries and more, all running besides the gorgeous Truckee river.

The retail and recreation element has only been in existence since 1990, but has already cemented itself as the place to head for the best hustle and bustle in town. As with any city which has a free flowing body of water as its focal point, there’s an intriguing marriage of serenity and excitement here, the latter summed up by the area’s very own white water kayak park! Get stuck in.

VISIT LAKE TAHOE

If all the glitz and glamour gets a bit much for you and the need to reconnect with nature calls, then the Biggest Little City in the World has a pretty impressive ace up its sleeve; the spectacular Lake Tahoe, a huge freshwater lake surrounded by mountains, with the opportunity for swimming, skiing, hiking and so much more, is just a 45 minute drive away. Should you not be behind the wheel for you trip, several shuttle buses run regularly between the city and lake, taking just over an hour.

THE GREAT RENO BALLOON RACE

The what now? Well, it’s all there in the title. The Great Balloon Race is an annual, three day event (next years takes place from the 11th to the 13th of September) which lays claim to being the world’s largest free hot air-ballooning event. Yep, it’s totally free to attend and one of the biggest days in the tight knit community’s calendar to boot. It’s one hell of a spectacle to witness, with the sky full of vibrant colours and the wonder of flight. What’s more, September is a great time of year to visit the city, with temperatures beginning to mellow and rainfall low.

GET HITCHED

Ah, the old ‘quickie wedding’, an act immortalised in popular culture for decades. And if you can’t quite face the planning, financial outlay, stress and keeping apart feuding family of a traditional wedding on British soil, then maybe you’re thinking of doing one yourself? If you are tying the knot, make sure the person conducting the ceremony is licensed to do so; there are lots of scammers in the state looking to take advantage of happy, inebriated couples.

Once you’ve found a reputable vow master, it will only cost you $60 to make it official. Think of the savings on that. That, or you could go simply go to watch one take place; the majority in Reno are open to the public and are often a fantastic spectacle to witness.

6 IDEAL HAUNTED CASTLES TO STAY IN THIS HALLOWEEN

Cmon, let’s be honest. Who hasn’t dreamt of staying in a real medieval castle, complete with fortified walls, drawbridges and tall round towers? Though castles were once positioned on high ground for defence purposes, today their elevated position makes for the perfect opportunity to enjoy a truly breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding locations.

So, why not enjoy a unique holiday experience and stay overnight in a real fortress? With Halloween on the horizon and all things spooktacular in mind, we’ve teamed up with Holidu, a search engine for holiday homes, to bring you these; our 6 IDEAL haunted houses to stay in this Halloween.

CASTELLO LEOPOLDO – TUSCANY, ITALY

This stunning 16th century castle oozes ancient charm and elegance, and can be found in the province of Livorno in Tuscany, Italy. The romantic-style building boasts the most perfect location for a panoramic view over the valley and, on clear days, you can also see the island of Elba. When the night falls, this location would make for a considerably haunting atmosphere: covering a span of 1500 m², Castello Leopoldo can comfortably accommodate 20 people for a thrilling murder mystery game weekend. Booking the entire castle will cost from £1,528 per night.

Halloween activity tip: If you have the stomach to learn about all things brutal and gruesome, a visit to the Torture Museum in San Gimignano is a must-do during the spookiest season of the year. Feast your eyes upon the most extensive exhibition of medieval torture weapons you’ll ever witness in one place – beware, this museum is likely to leave you with nightmares for days on end.

CHÂTEAU MARTINUS – SAINT-CAPRAIS-DE-LERM, FRANCE

The Château Martinus, located in the Aquitaine region of France, is a spectacular 1,000 m² castle that can accommodate up to 18 people and is the perfect setting for a Halloween party to be remembered. In the medieval dining room you can enjoy a midnight feast along the long wooden trestle-style table, overlooked by a roaring fireplace which heats the room. The interior design adds to the old-fashioned, gothic atmosphere with features such as stone walls and exposed beams found throughout the castle. The price for renting starts from £301 per night.

Halloween activity tip: If you fancy a trip to Bordeaux then make sure to do it on the day on which the annual Zombie Walk is taking place. October 19th will see hundreds of the living dead take to the streets of the city in search of fresh human brains to devour! Make sure to dress to kill – the very best zombie looks will be rewarded.

MAZURES – LIÈGE, BELGIUM

This Game of Thrones style residence is part of a castle which overlooks the banks of the river Vesdre, located in Liège, Belgium. After a full renovation, the castle now houses a 100 m² holiday home in the left wing of the tower. As soon as you cross the medieval fantasy-style bridge and enter the home, you will find the modern living room and kitchen, as well as a spiral staircase which leads you upstairs to the two bedrooms. It can accommodate up to 4 people and the prices start at £81 per night.

Halloween activity tip: If staying in one medieval castle is not enough to quench your thirst for all things Halloweeny, drive 45 minutes to the stunning Château de Jehay where you can enjoy some spooky thrills at their night of the witches celebration. With face painting, free candyfloss and a thrilling storytelling walk through the park, this event is suitable for families who seek some horror this Halloween. NUMBER 6 NARROW WATER CASTLE – COUNTY DOWN, NORTHERN IRELAND

This next gem of an apartment lies inside the majestic Narrow Water Castle in Northern Ireland. The original castle building dates back to the 1680s, having been newly renovated to include a luxury apartment which accommodates up to six people. Features such as the local granite exterior and interior exposed beams make this home the perfect choice for a late October weekend away in the Irish countryside. Renting out this unique apartment costs from £151 per night.

Halloween activity tip: A trip to the Downpatrick and County Down railway offers the spookiest steam train experience in Northern Ireland. The train ride will lead you to the wicked witch’s haunted graveyard and then back to Merlin’s cavern, with face painting for the children available before you board.

CHÂTEAU ST. PHILIPPE – SAINT-PIERRE-D’ALBIGNY, FRANCE

Last but definitely not least on our list is this mysterious French château which dates back to 1032. Originally built by the Benedictine monks in 1032 as a priory, this home is rich with history that is guaranteed to leave you feeling the eerie presence of the people who once lived within the castle walls. Almost 1000 years later, the current owners have completely restored the castle and preserved its architectural integrity whilst immersing that with some modern charm. To stay here will cost from £1,687 a night.

Halloween activity tip: A mere 10 minute drive from the apartment lies yet another fascinating castle: Château de Miolans. The history of this medieval castle dates back to 1014, but its most notable usage was when it was made into a state run prison from 1564-1792.

5 IDEAL LUXURY CHRISTMAS TREATS FOR YOURSELF

Did someone drop the C bomb? But we haven’t even seen fireworks yet, let alone flung open the door on the advent calendar’s inaugural offering. And though the season seems to creep earlier and earlier with each passing year (Christmas tree up by Wimbledon next year, perhaps?), the planning and preparation doesn’t seem to align. There’s always that last minute, Christmas Eve rush for gifts and mince pies, and worry about who you’ve forgotten or under represented in the generosity stakes.

We thought this was meant to be fun? So, before all the stress of dedicating all your time and energy into the biggest day of the year – and others – why not treat yourself to a bit of pampering and relaxation, to either get you ready for the day or to recover afterwards. Or both. You deserve it. Here are 5 IDEAL luxury Christmas treats for yourself.

A CHRISTMAS MARKET HOLIDAY…

The anticipation for the Christmas season is so quickly quelled when it’s dominated by a load of social functions you’d rather not be a part of. Restore some magic by taking a much needed break abroad to somewhere which does the Christmas market thing right. The Europeans throw the best, with the likes of Prague and Berlin embracing the magic of the season with open arms.

We particularly love this time of year in Iceland’s capital Reykjavik which offers the perfect festive setting; expect alpine-like wooden huts and snow-covered pine trees aplenty. From the foodie market of Hlemmur Mathöll Food Hall to the more classic market of Ingólfstorg with its man-made ice rink in the centre of downtown Reykjavik’s main square, the destination offers something to suit everyone. Should a continental jaunt be a push too far, then check out our guide to England’s best Christmas markets here.

…OR A JANUARY ESCAPE

Let’s face it; January is bleak. Really bleak. The bank balance is hollow, the liver likely pickled, the inbox full of spam and no holidays on the horizon until all of that sorts itself out. Well, here’s a novel approach and one which we’ve found has very much improved our quality of life in recent years; have a holiday booked for those dark, gloomy days post Christmas and New Year. Somewhere hot, sunny and not concerned with Christmas hangovers is just perfect. Because there’s no sight more likely to bring us down than all those trees discarded on London street corners.

A LUXURY WATCH

We hope we’re not the only ones…but every year we find that during party season our tardiness is well and truly exposed. Always running late, always with tight timetables on gatherings and soirees, it’s the most wonderful time of the year for those who cherish punctuality as a virtue. For everyone else, a timepiece you’d be proud to wear to all manner of parties and events is essential. For pure, sheer, unadulterated luxury, the timeless magic of a Cartier watch is the choice. Timeless, of course, in its classic, enduring design aesthetics. We can assure you it very much does tell the time, too.

A LUXURY CHRISTMAS HAMPER

Don’t you just love it? All of the best bits of the season condensed into an attractive basket. The booze, the mince pies, the cheese and chutneys…hey, we could just take ourselves upstairs with our Christmas hamper and forget about the roast and the rest. Imagine. Treat yourself to one this year for those precious nights in, when you’re resting up and readying yourself for the next party and nothing but a bit of self love and pampering will do.

SPA DAY SALVATION

The run up to Christmas involves socialising on a scale not felt so keenly at any other time of the year; by mid December we’re found craving a night in with the Netflix and Deliveroo, make no mistake. But if you want to be looking and feeling as radiant as possible throughout this marathon slog of mulled wine and Fairytale of New York renditions, then a spa day will have you fixed right up and ready to mingle. Check out the Guardian’s thorough rundown of 30 of the best spas over here. Perhaps you’ll need to bookend the 25th with such an outing; a post Christmas spruce up always feels like the loveliest sort of treat after all that overindulgence.

5 IDEAL DESTINATIONS IN MEXICO FOR YOUR WEDDING

Congratulations to anyone reading this, for it’s safe to assume you’ve recently got engaged! That, or you’re living vicariously, which of course, there’s nothing wrong with either. Anyhow, if you are starting to plan your wedding, and you’re thinking outside the box with a destination, then might we suggest Mexico is a pretty amazing choice?

Gorgeous, golden sands, culture and history by the bucketload, a fantastic, varied cuisine and warm, hospitable people…need we continue? If that’s tickled your fancy and you’d like to drill down into the detail, then read on; our 5 IDEAL destinations in Mexico for your wedding.

COZUMEL

Whether you’re looking for a beachfront wedding or one set against lush verdant landscapes, Cozumel could well be the destination for you. Due to its long-standing reputation as a great place to tie the knot, there are many vendors, planners and wedding bands on site ready to take the paradox of choice out of the planning stage.

Mid December through late April tends to be the best time to host your Cozumel wedding and while there, guests won’t be bereft of entertainment; it’s a true gem in the Caribbean Sea with some of the best scuba diving on the planet and Mayan ruins, specifically the San Gervasio Mayan Archaeological Site, offering historical intrigue.

Aside from the world-class diving and heritage sites, the Punta Sur Ecological Park (which includes the island’s best beach) covers 2500 acres and contains a rich ecosystem, including crocodiles in the marshland, sea turtles close to the shore and exotic plants native to Cozumel. Don’t forget your camera!

LOS CABOS

Stretching from Cabo San Lucas to San Jose del Cabo, Los Cabos is known as a celebrity hot spot and Spring Break mecca with all the exclusive beach clubs, bars and villas that go with that title. If you’re looking for something a little more low key, boat rides to nearby private beaches are available with fair frequency, with private boat tours in Cabo by La Isla Tour our favourite. Winter months in Los Cabos have the best weather but early spring could work as well for your wedding.

Try to avoid hurricane season, which is at its most severe from August to October, if you want to avoid the curse of rain on your wedding day, but on speed.

RIVIERA MAYA

The coastal stretch of the Yucatan Peninsula offers a mix of Mayan ruins and pristine beaches to provide the perfect balance of tropical and historical feels. Cancun, the area’s major hub, sits on the tip of the peninsula and is a great place for those who love a totally boisterous nightlife.

But if you’re looking for a more peaceful place to say your ‘I do’s’, you could head out to enjoy the rustic charm of Playa Del Carmen, a once sleepy fishing village which is now a hipster haven with oodles of cool. Plan your Riviera Maya wedding for the months between mid-December and Easter to ensure the best weather possible.

GUADALAJARA

It needn’t all be sun, sea and saying I do. If you’re the type who prefers the hustle and bustle of the city (and less sand in your wedding shoes) then another of the best wedding destinations in Mexico is the country’s second metropolis, Guadalajara, could provide the perfect backdrop to your nuptials.

Your party could pay homage at La Minerva, an iconic statue and fountain of a Roman goddess and a fitting tribute to marriage. Nearby Lake Chapala is also as mystical and romantic a backdrop as you could ever ask for. What’s more, the city knows how to throw a knees up for a reception worthy of the proceeding day’s tequila hangover.

TULUM

Phew, that was enough time away from the beach, and the gravitational force of the tide has pulled us right back in. Arguably Mexico’s single most stunning spot, if you’re looking to get hitched in the shadow of the ruins of an ancient civilisation, you should head to Tulum. This humbling place is perched above 40-foot cliffs, and features the famous El Castillo – a striking ruin of a Mexican pyramid, one of many that stood tall over the country thousands of years ago.

You could have your ceremony on the golden sands below then head inland for the party; the Papaya Playa Project is the hippest hangout in town and an upscale, suave affair fit for a special celebration. Or if you can’t tear yourself away from the sand (not sinking is it?) then Nomade has great music, great food and sits right on the coast.

Okay, so Mexico it is for your big day. You’ll need some guidance on first timer tips to the country, right? Check out our 5 IDEAL things to know before your holiday to Mexico here.

5 IDEAL TIPS TO PASS THE TIME WHILE TRAVELLING

Travel is a way to broaden the mind, full of adventure, intrigue and excitement. Here’s something the guidebooks don’t tell you, though; travel, at times, can get a bit boring. There’s downtime in droves, with dead hours spent sitting on a bus or at the airport, as well as bureaucracy, queues, killing time and more, and more, killing time.

Nope, it can’t be all beach sunsets, cuddling koalas and scoffing local delicacies. Face up to the fact that at times you’ll need to entertain yourself, and you’ll be fine. With this in mind, here’s 5 IDEAL tips to pass the time while travelling.

WRITE A TRAVEL JOURNAL

Travel throws so much at you; a near constant kaleidoscope of colour, curiosity and sometimes moments which are a little uncomfortable. A space where you can reflect on your innermost thoughts and feelings is a must. A bonus is that this reflection can be the perfect way to fill the time.

So, keep a travel journal, both as a space to vent and document, as well as a keepsake with huge sentimental value in years to come. Aim to document daily, or even several times a day for the best results.

BE INQUISITIVE & TALK TO PEOPLE…

…even to strangers. ‘Travel’, rather than simply going on holiday, is all about broadening the mind and enriching your pool of experience. Travelling can be a socially nourishing experience and a wonderful way to meet people and learn about new cultures. If you keep yourself to yourself and ask no questions, then you may as well have stayed home.

Take every opportunity to strike up conversation with a taxi driver, hotel receptionist, adjacent drinker or shopkeeper to ask for the best insider insight. Share stories in return. At the very least, you’ll unearth somewhere perhaps not in the guidebooks. At best, new friendships will be forged. Lovely stuff.

EXERCISE YOUR BRAIN

There’s no denying that travelling is good for improving your brain and its cognitive abilities. According to research, the complexities of getting out there and seeing the world can sharpen your mind; to get all scientific(ish), travel has the ability to ‘light up’ a whole range of neural pathways you don’t always use, leading to cognitive benefits.

However, the ‘’use it or lose it rule” is something which the brain adheres to devotedly. In other words, those neural pathways can also get weaker when neglected. And although we hate to admit it, lying on a beach doesn’t exactly oil the mind’s cogs too thoroughly.

It’s important to give your brain a little work out from time to time to keep things functioning to their full potential. This could be in the form of a daily sudoku or crossword, or something more interactive like chess (online or IRL).

Whilst you shouldn’t expect to become Einstein overnight, they certainly won’t do your cognitive function any harm and time will be passed seamlessly.

BE MINDFUL

When there’s so much out there to see and do, and so many new experiences to enjoy, it can seem somewhat counterintuitive to ‘take a moment’ and be still. But being mindful can bring great benefits when travelling, allowing you to process and reflect on what everything you’ve been through. This could take the form of meditation, yoga or by simply sitting in a quiet room and thinking for a few minutes each day. Even by simply being appreciative of the innocuous incidents of each day, you can harness the power of mindfulness while on the move. If you’d like to delve a little deeper, check out our 5 IDEAL tips for living mindfully and in the moment over here.

FIND COMPANY IN PODCASTS

You might think travel is a never ending party of new friends and frivolity. But there are moments of solitude, introspection and sometimes, we’re afraid to say, loneliness. The warm embrace of the human voice can fill these darker hours.

Indeed, ‘The Podcast Hug’ is a term coined by one of our favourites in the field. It refers to that warm, introspective, undisturbed space created by listening to a good podcast and doing little else. When you’re sitting on an overnight bus or taking a rest in your hostel room, then you have the perfect excuse to get immersed.

Some of favourites in the soothing yet informative field? The aforementioned Blindboy, simply the best out there, as well as the Adam Buxton podcast, Guardian Long Reads and the excellent Dissect Podcast, which dives deep into some of the best recent, contemporary albums with a fine comb.

With a range of ways to keep busy during the inevitable free time you’ll have while travelling, there’s no excuse not to make the most of every moment!

5 IDEAL THINGS TO DO IN THE AIRPORT IF YOUR FLIGHT IS DELAYED

Having a flight delayed or cancelled is every traveller’s nightmare; a collective sigh from the gate and a hasty recalculation of how many hours at the pool you’ll have today. If any at all. All your laid out plans and strategising are now at the mercy of the airline, the skies and the runway, and the resulting wait in the airport is rarely an enjoyable one. There are things you can do, though, to mitigate this blow to your holiday, some practical and some personal. These are those; our 5 IDEAL things to do in the airport if your flight is delayed.

CHECK IF YOU’RE ELIGIBLE FOR FLIGHT COMPENSATION

Can you get compensation for a delayed flight? Well, when your flight is delayed, your airline carrier is expected to schedule you on the next available flight or offer a refund. Travellers need to know their rights when it comes to refunds and compensation to fully exploit this. Though regulations do not oblige airlines to compensate passengers for cancellations and delays, some carriers often rebook their passengers at no additional fee. The contract of carriage differs from one airline to another and many airlines’ compensation plan only kicks into effect if the delay extends for more than 3 or 4 hours. To find out more, check out this EU flight delay compensation guide.

ASK YOUR AIRLINE TO BOOK YOU ONTO ANOTHER FLIGHT

Perhaps even prior to checking that eligibility for compensation, you should see if you can get your bum on another plane’s seat, stat. You’ve got to strike while the iron is hot, and before all the other passengers have the same idea. You know how it is when travelling; it’s every man and woman for themselves, so get selfish. As soon as the announcement sends that groan up over the gate’s waiting area, get in touch (physically or over the phone) with your airline and ask them to arrange another flight for you. As it’s their responsibility for the delay or cancellation, you shouldn’t be charged a booking fee and they’ll likely be as accommodating as can be. Damage limitation, and all that.

GET ACCESS TO THE PRIORITY LOUNGE

So, let’s assume you’ve now got a wait on your hands and you’re resigned to a little time in the airport. Well, getting a pass for priority lounge can be a great way to pass the time. Though airlines are hesitant about giving out priority lounge passes as these places need to retain an exclusive air, if there’s been a delay then you have some sway over them, for sure, so ask. A seasoned traveller knows these lounges are the best escape to burn time during delays. Inside these hallowed walls you’ll find free flow booze, a refined cuisine compared to the usual stuff available in the rest of the airport, a better functioning wifi and Sky TV. Result!

GET SOME EXERCISE

The modern person so often has little time for exercise so embrace this opportunity to get some calories burned and steps tipping that 10’000 mark. The vast expanse of the airport departure lounge is the perfect place to pace and ponder, and stretching your legs is certainly a more worthwhile pursuit than stewing over the lost holiday hours or downing another morning pint and inhaling a McDonald’s.

DON’T LET IT RUIN YOUR HOLIDAY

The red mist can quickly descend when circumstances out of our control cause our precious downtime to be threatened. Don’t be that guy rude to a member of staff who doesn’t deserve to shoulder the blame; karma will take you down a peg or two, make no mistake. Instead, breathe, stay calm and embrace the chance to explore the airport, enjoy some food and drink, perhaps even some retail therapy. And then, once your flight is rearranged, you’ll be able to approach your holiday with the same optimistic, enthusiastic spirit which you brought to the airport in the first place.

5 IDEAL DESTINATIONS FOR A SEASIDE HOLIDAY IN THE UK

As the old refrain goes ‘oh I do like to be seaside’. And who can argue with that sentiment, sung in a British accent with a quirky music hall backing track? Pickled cockles from polystyrene cups, skimming pebbles which land just once, collecting and comparing shells, shaking off sand from your shoes…it’s nostalgia in abundance and we love it. Though summer is now most definitely over, there’s nothing quite like a seaside break on a cool, crisp British autumn day. With that in mind, here are 5 IDEAL destinations for a seaside holiday in the UK.

THE SUFFOLK COAST

Situated on the east coast of England, the Suffolk Coast is a charming place seemingly lost in time. You can take a marine tour in Ipswich, enjoy a stroll in Woodbridge’s peaceful coastal hamlet, explore the mysterious and isolated Orfordness beach, and sprawl on the golden sand of Southwood Beach. Activities popular in the region include hiking, bird watching, wine-tasting, art performances, windsurfing, and boat riding. Suffolk’s rich culinary heritage makes it a special spot for foodies, too, especially seafood lovers; all part of the great British seaside experience, don’t you think? If you are looking for a nice place to stay during your visit, simplyseaviews.co.uk can help you find a sea view cottage.

BRIGHTON, SUSSEX

Sitting on the south coast of England with around 90 miles of shoreline, the county of Sussex includes perhaps the quintessential seaside experience in the UK. Yep, a stroll along Brighton seafront, picking teddies on the pier, checking out cheesy souvenir shops, a smoked kipper roll in one hand, a plastic pint of flat lager in the other, is about as perfect a day out as we could imagine. Though the pull of the ocean’s tide is strong, don’t neglect to stroll inland, where the Laines, Pavillion and funky Kemptown all have something to offer. Brighton is also one of the country’s culinary capitals; check out our tips on its best restaurants here.

PORT ISSAC, CORNWALL

If you’re looking to embark on a mythical quest to unearth discoveries you never thought you would ever find, Cornwall is the place to tour. It’s a destination full of magic and mystery. Each corner of Cornwall’s coastline tells a conflicting story, and its landscape includes misty clifftops, majestic rocks rising out of the sea, tranquil coves, relaxed villages, and lively beaches.

The must-see places include St Michael’s Mount island castle, Newquay beach, Falmouth maritime museum, Padstow harbour, and Port Isaac fishing village. If you’re after some top draw fish cookery, then one of the finest fish chefs in the world, Nathan Outlaw, owns two fantastic restaurants in Port Isaac, making the very most of the area’s finest produce. Which of course equates to some bloody nice seafood.

THE ISLE OF WIGHT

Looking for unique? You won’t get anywhere more so than The Isle of Wight. It possesses enchanting clear waters and gorgeous vast sands where you can bask, swim, surf, and take boat rides. This is all thanks to its very own micro climate, due to its position as one of Britain’s southernmost points, being south facing and the fact the town itself is protected by surrounding chalk downs. Visit the Ventnor Botanic Garden to appreciate its special geographical position; here you’ll see exotic flora flourishing.

What’s more, you can visit Queen Victoria’s royal palace to learn some heritage, Dinosaur Isle for a prehistoric treat, and Dimbola Museum & Galleries for fun art and culture. Oh, and did we mention it’s consistently found to be the UK’s sunniest place? Seaside, here we come!

BROADHAVEN & BARAFUNDLE, WALES

When you mention the words beach and Wales together, it’s usually a more troubling image of the world’s largest marine mammal that comes to mind. But to play word association like this would be to miss out on the largely undiscovered, wholly beautiful beaches of the country. That’s a country with 157 miles of coastline, much of which is rugged and arresting in equal measure.

Head to Pembrokeshire in the south (just under two hours from the capital) for a selection of the finest stretches of sand and surf; both Broad Haven beach and Barafundle beach have been bestowed with the Blue Flag award which celebrates water quality and environmental protection of beauty spots worldwide. What’s more, in 2017 the latter was named as one of the world’s best beaches by Passport Magazine. You’ll never want to leave.

5 IDEAL THINGS TO DO IN GIBRALTAR

Bordered to the north by Spain and coined ‘Britain in the sun’ by those who both voted Brexit but would like to live there forever, Gibraltar is one beautiful place to visit. For such a small area, the rock nation certainly has a lot going on, from unique opportunities for wildlife spotting to the hustle, bustle and frivolity of world renowned festivals. While it’s future is uncertain with Brexit on the horizon, what is assured is the enduring appeal of this amazing little corner of the Iberian peninsula. With that in mind, and with the help of Ta-Dah TV, here are 5 IDEAL things to do in Gibraltar.

DOLPHIN & WHALE WATCHING

Out of all of the attractions on the Rock, dolphin and whale watching is perhaps the most popular. Gibraltar has become famous all over the world for its ever-present population of wild and free roaming dolphins, as well as seasonal whales; now that’s a one-two punch and a half.

There are four prevalent types of dolphin who live here, primarily the common, bottle-nose and striped dolphin, as well as pilot whales. It’s also eminently possible to see orcas, and fin and sperm whales, to name but a few, as these amazing creatures come to the Bay and the Strait of Gibraltar for food and to breed. Taking a guided boat trip aimed at dolphin and whale watching from Gibraltar will not only give you guarantee of seeing these amazing creatures up close and personal in their natural habitat, but also provide you with outstanding views of the Rock of Gibraltar, the Spanish coastline and North Africa. Reason enough to visit, we think.

FROLIC WITH MONKEYS AT APES DEN

Located on Gibraltar Rock, the best way to get up to Apes Den is by cable car. At the top, you’ll encounter a variety of monkeys ready for a little fun and frolics.

The monkeys at Apes Den are well known for their curiosity and for being very engaging (aren’t they always, hey?). The troop living here is called the Queen’s Gate group and are warm and hospitable, permitting people to get very close to them, even climbing onto the happy tourists from time to time. It is, of course, advisory to be cautious when this happens, as they are still wild animals and can bite or cause hurt if they are frightened or provoked. The cheeky monkeys will take almost every opportunity to steal food from your bags, or even snatch it right out of your hands. Deploy common sense, and you’ll have a blast, we think.

What’s more, if you’re hoping to explore St Michael’s Cave (more of that later) then it’s merely a short walk from Apes Den.

GIBRALTAR CALLING MUSIC FESTIVAL

The Gibraltar Music Festival is another massive highlight of the rock (appropriately titled, here) nation. Happening in September, if you’re into pop, rock, dance and EDM (main stage), as well as disco, funk and even ska (classics stage), then this one is for you. And if you can’t find anything you like within those genres, then perhaps music isn’t for you, full stop.

The festival is only a few years young, but regularly attracts music lovers from the Mediterranean Costa del Sol and the Costa de la Luz on the Atlantic coast, all the way up to Seville in Spain. When MTV came on board, the 2-day festival changed name slightly, now known as the MTV Gibraltar Calling, but this only helped attract bigger names. These guys really know how to throw a late summer festival, getting huge bands and acts to perform (2019 saw Liam Gallagher and Take That, while two years ago, Stormzy headlined) with festival goers eager to catch the last rays of soundtracked European summer sun.

SAINT MICHAEL’S CAVE

Saint Michael’s Cave is a network of limestone caves found deep down in the Rock of Gibraltar. Located on what is called the Upper Rock, the cave sits at a height of over 300 metres above sea level. The main cave has been converted into an incredible auditorium, offering a completely unique acoustic experience, and plays host to to concerts and events on a regular basis.

As well as the main cave, there is Lower Michael’s Cave. Only discovered during World War Two whilst Royal Engineers were blasting out a new entrance to the lower chambers of the cave, it’s a unique place indeed as it’s home to many of speleological formations. Stalagmites, stalactites, rim stone, helictites, columns, coral rocks, flowstone, straws and curtains are merely a few of the outstanding cave formations.

SCUBA DIVING

A more all encompassing approach is needed, with these; our 5 IDEAL must-haves for those wanting to kick their career up a notch.

A GREAT SUPPORT SYSTEM

While making it to the top, by very definition, is a one-person job, at the same time it’s not something which can be achieved alone. You’ll often require solid support from friends and family members, even if it is just to provide you with an encouraging pep talk when you’re feeling down or exhausted (which let’s face, will happen a lot) or perhaps to cook you a nutritious meal when you are too busy to do so yourself. A solid support system such as this can truly make all the difference when you’re focusing fully and unwaveringly on maximising your career.

A MADE TO MEASURE SUIT

From something so all-encompassing as family and love, to something nuanced, specific, but no less important we think. It’s all about that instant confidence boost which will give you the sense of power and swagger that you need to walk into any boardroom and do what you do best. Yes, there is nothing better for an ambitious professional than a made to measure suit to help you feel the part. Because let’s be honest, who ever delivered the pitch of their life in shorts and a t-shirt?

A WAY TO RELIEVE STRESS

According to statistics, 74% of UK adults have felt so stressed at some point over the last year they felt overwhelmed or unable to cope. Undoubtedly, much of this stress is likely to have been career-related. So, if you’re going to make a superlative success of your career, you’ll need to find balance in your life; it can’t be all work, work, and more work. Without it, you risk burnout and losing your passion for what it is that you do. But if you’re well-rested and at peace, you’re also more productive and focused. Check out our 5 IDEAL ways to cope with stress at work over here.

A JOB THAT YOU LOVE

Speaking of passion, you’ll be unlikely to ever reach the very top of your profession if you’re not completely and utterly in love with your job. Though you may not be crazy about the actual duties you carry out on a daily basis, a strong, serious passion about tangible outcome is vital. It’s this passion that will propel you forward and help you in reaching your goals.

A STRATEGIC WAY TO MANAGE YOUR TIME

Immaculate time management is key to succeeding in any industry, make no mistake. Precision, prioritising, perfection; they all work in tandem with time. With so much to do and the necessity to do it all to the best of your ability, you’ll need to plan every move you make down to the last detail. Luckily, with the amount of technology that you have at your disposal nowadays, planning and managing your time effectively shouldn’t be too much of a challenge. Use it or lose it, we say.

6 IDEAL INSIDER TIPS ON HOW TO GET A FLIGHT UPGRADE

Have you ever walked through first class on route to the common person’s seating, and pictured reclining in those massive seats, flute of complementary champagne in hand? Yep, rest assured, we are very much the same. But what if we told you that you didn’t have to imagine anymore? That getting a promotion to those cushy chairs didn’t always need to involve flashing the cash? Read on to find out how; our 6 IDEAL insider tips on how to get a flight upgrade.

PS & QS

Airports are without exception chaotic places full of stressed and often brusque people. Make yourself stand out. Be polite, courteous and to the point, peppering your interaction with pleasantries whilst not wasting anyone’s time. Indeed, you can tell a lot about someone by the way they speak to those behind the check in desk and at the bar. So, keep karma on your side by always being as lovely as possible, and reap the rewards in the most honest way possible. In doing so, you’ll be the automatic first pick for perks.

IT’S TIME TO BE BRAVE

There’s no point beating around the bush, deploying insinuation and innuendo hoping to be offered something in return. Instead, put your demand on the table. If you don’t ask, you don’t get, right? Your bravery may well be rewarded, and if not, at least you’ll have practiced your blagging skills for next time.

BEFRIEND A FLIGHT AGENT

Underhand perhaps? A quick, convenient route to first class, certainly. If you frequently travel and interact with the same agent, flight attendant or check in desk employee repeatedly, take the time to learn their name, their passions and the rest. In doing so, you’ll be the first person to come to their mind when the opportunity for an upgrade comes available. It’s a two way street; you give a little, you get a little, so work with a flight broker to request an upgrade on your flight. Simples.

CLAIM COMPENSATION

If you’ve had an unpleasant experience with the same airline previously, but it hasn’t totally put you off flying with them, then consider requesting an upgrade as compensation. If the airline is responsible (and in tune with modern marketing and PR methods), then they’ll likely readily cede to your request.

CHECK YOUR SEAT FOR PROBLEMS

Sneaky, maybe, but also a perfectly legitimate reason to request a seat change. So, check the tray table, tiny tv, and the seatbelt of your seat for issues. Should something be faulty or not functional, request firmly but fairly to be moved up front, suggesting that you’d be happy to forget the matter should they accept this solution. Keep the power in your hands. What’s the worst that could happen?

JOIN AN AIRLINE LOYALTY CLUB

Though they’ve received a little negative publicity of late, many airlines still offer exciting discounts and deals to frequent travellers or those who are members of loyalty clubs. Along with many other benefits, like access to airport lounges, you’ll have the privilege of first option on flight upgrades. And that’s what you’re here for, right?

5 IDEAL WAYS STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP IS KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL CAREER

In many organisations, managers tend to focus on achieving short-term goals and crushing numbers. While that may garner praise and temporary credit, these kinds of wins rarely sustain a business in the long-term. Instead, company success and sustainability relies on mentors who influence a culture of cooperation, collaboration and creativity. This leads to a more all encompassing, long term success.

Many term this holistic approach as strategic leadership; a motivational method which encourages others to pursue the company mission voluntarily. To enjoy a successful career in any industry, being a strategic leader should influence your decisions. With this in mind, here are 5 IDEAL ways strategic leadership is key to a successful career.

THEY EMPOWER OTHERS

Top management is usually in charge of the distribution of responsibilities across the organisation. Given that not every manager has the same leadership style, it falls on the top management to implement strategic leadership and create a complementary vision for the company. Put quite simply, managers who can empower their team to become autonomous are more likely to rise faster.

A TIME TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

When employees are empowered, they learn to take the initiative and assume full responsibility for their actions; vital in inspiring mentees, we think. This provides an opportunity for the employees and manager to become resilient, adaptable and goal-driven, all of which are qualities which define strategic leadership. By empowering others, managers distribute power downwards to allow employees to get more experience and learn new skills.

TRANSPARENT  WITH INFORMATION

In a typical organisation, the flow of information is from top to bottom, with middle managers acting as amplifiers. To maintain a motivated team, transparency with employees is key as they need to have all the information they need and understand the reason behind every task and how it helps in achieving the long-term goal of the vision. This creates a feedback loop back up the chain of command or directly to the management.

When there is a free flow of information, a leader becomes informed about every aspect of their business. Information is vital to a successful career and as a strategic leader, you have the invaluable opportunity to build integrity in your organisation when people trust the information you provide.

FAILURE IS AN OPTION

One of the strengths of a strategic leader is to create an enabling environment, unencumbered by labels of right, wrong, possible and impossible. The fear of failure prevents many people from trying new things and taking on risks but to succeed, one needs to take on calculated risks. Strategic leaders do no scold their team members when they fail. Indeed, failure is very much an option if lessons are learned. This kind of attitude towards work sparks innovation which is so necessary for growth; harvest and harness it accordingly.

WELLNESS AND WELFARE

Strategic leadership relies on the strength of a dedicated workforce. As such, and at the very least, businesses should invest in a reliable healthcare program to build a stronger workforce for growth and success, especially small businesses. When employees are taken care of, they will do whatever they can to help the leader succeed. And that’s what it’s all about, right?

4 IDEAL WAYS TO FUND HOME IMPROVEMENTS FAST

It’s one of life’s great truisms; that the housework is never done. And as an extension of that, it seems like there’s always one more home improvement to make before things shift from ‘boring house’ to ‘dream home’. Money, of course, tends to be the biggest obstacle. And unless you have Kevin McCloud on speed dial, willing to dispense the tips, then you’re going to have to get creative with how you both imagine and fund the project. Here’s how to deal with the latter; our 4 IDEAL ways to fund home improvements fast.

JOB & ROOM SPECIFIC FINANCE

A practical way to fund home improvements is to focus on single jobs, funding them individually, to help you budget proportionally and steadily. Should you be focusing on your windows, for instance, then professional services such as Double Glazing Funding can assist with the financing for that particular part of the house. Double glazed windows and doors serve to make the home more energy-efficient, in effect making it a budget-friendly investment in the long run, too. Apply the same process to other areas of the house; once the windows are done, then recalculate your budget to see if you have enough for the bathroom.

UNDERSTAND LOAN LINGO & OPTIONS AVAILABLE

When it comes to funding your home renovation, there are lots of loan options out there. Unless you’re an accountant or loan advisor, getting your head around all the different types of finance available to you can be a massive headache.

For one, there’s bridging loans and bridging finance; usually a short-term loan which can ‘bridge’ the gap when you don’t have quite enough funding and are looking for more. Then there are personal loans which, for instance, can offer the chance to borrow up to £15,000 over five years and have a fixed repayment period. These loans, however, tend to be unsecured which means that the interest might be a little higher to mitigate the bank’s risk. What’s more, there are even loans specifically for home improvement and you could even consider an over-extended overdraft facility or credit card option. Get in touch with an advisor at your bank for a more thorough breakdown; just be aware that they may have ulterior motives in recommending certain courses of action.

BUILDING MATERIAL KNOW HOW

Bricks’n’mortar. It’s a metaphorical term to suggest a tangible base; something real, conventional and non-digitised. It’s also likely the costliest part of your build. In the UK, homes are often made with brick but there are plenty of other materials involved, some of which may well work out cheaper. While the outer wall might be created with bricks, for instance, your retaining wall could be built with precast concrete to lower costs. It’s vital that you research the benefits of each building material prior to drawing up your budget, let alone actually laying some foundations. Safety and durability are crucial here.

LIVE FRUGALLY AND SAVE

During your renovation, no doubt you’ll be up to your eyeballs in spreadsheets, paperwork and invoices, worrying about all those inevitable funding issues. We hate to say it, but now is not the time to live the high life, retreat to the Caribbean or indulge in some retail therapy to take your mind off things. Best to hunker down, hold tight and delay the gratification until your domestic space is functioning to its full potential. What’s more, the good guys over at My Sunday Tools have 120 easy and affordable DIY home improvements so check those out for those frugal, money-saving interior adjustments.

8 IDEAL SITES TO SEE ON A TRIP TO ROME

With a history spanning several millennia, since its inception Rome has been a prominent political and cultural centre of both the old and new world. As such, the city is home to such a treasure trove of intricate, ancient architecture and historical intrigue that attracts millions of tourists each year. Last year, in fact, broke record visitor numbers. Sure, every tourist will return with their own top tips and esoteric takes on the best and worst of the Italian capital, but there are a select few cultural sites that simply must be on your itinerary. These are those; our 8 IDEAL sites to see on a trip to Rome.

COLOSSEUM AND THE ARCH OF CONSTANTINE

Built by the Romans in 70-80 AD, the Colosseum or Flavian Amphitheater is perhaps the most iconic and renowned landmark here. Indeed, Rome’s most famous classical ruin is unmissable, physically and metaphorically speaking too. Indeed, it’s estimated to have accommodated about 50,000 spectators during past gladiatorial tournaments and the sheer spectacle of the building still stuns to this day. Owing to its popularity and selfie opportunities, you’ll most likely have to put up with long lines, especially during the peak holiday season. Go early, then, to appreciate the enormity of this marvellous structure from all angles without interupption.

8 IDEAL SITES TO SEE ON A TRIP TO ROME

PANTHEON

Being one of the best preserved Roman buildings, the Pantheon was built under Emperor Hadrian around 126-128 AD. The exact day of its construction is unknown, but by doing your own investigation into past records, you can illuminate your knowledge prior to visiting; dip into library journals, watch documentaries or consult experts. The myths surrounding its history are worth the effort.

What we do know is this; originally designed to be a temple for Roman deities, it was converted into a Roman Catholic Church in the 7th century AD. This magnificent architectural feat is instantly recognizable due to its portico of eight granite Corinthian columns; eight in the front and two groups of four at the back.

The 2000-year Pantheon is deemed the largest unreinforced dome in the world, with an interior lined with magnificent stone patterns, and its only source of natural light the large circular opening in the centre of its dome. Make a day of it; the adjacent Piazza della Rotonda square offers the perfect setting for a strong espresso, gelato or pizza with company.

ST PETER’S SQUARE

Rome’s independent state, the Vatican, is the world’s capital of Catholicism. The Vatican’s St. Peter’s Square is where to soak it up; lined by beautiful religious statues depicting previous popes and other prominent Catholic church figures, it’s a place where you’ll feel immersed in history at every turn. At the end of the square, there’s the iconic Basilica where Papal Masses are held regularly. You can enter the St. Peter’s Basilica for free, but you’ll have to pay a small fee to access the dome (either by steps or an elevator) from where you will be able to enjoy a splendid view of the entire city. Worth the contribution, we think.

If you’re determined to include the Vatican trip to Rome, then ready yourself for huge queues at St Peter’s, and pre-book your slot. If you wish to see the Pope himself, you should go to the square on a Wednesday when he delivers his General Audience address.

TREVI FOUNTAIN

Designed and constructed by Nicola Salvi, this beautiful fountain is a tribute to Oceanus, a Roman god, who is represented riding in a chariot pulled by tritons. There are few fountains like this in the world, so take the chance when in Rome to marvel at its lavish decorations and detailed sculptures. Found near the Pantheon, both can comfortably be done in a morning or afternoon. Tradition dictates that you toss a few coins into the water for good luck when visiting. Make a wish!

8 IDEAL SITES TO SEE ON A TRIP TO ROME

THE ROMAN FORUM

Being one of the most famous ruins in Italy, the Roman Forum provides you with a glimpse into ancient Roman political and public life. It now sits in the middle of a thriving modern city, the juxtaposition of which is worth the trip alone. Around the back of another famous landmark, Palazzo dei Senatori, you’ll find a panoramic view of the Forum, where you fully appreciate its fallen and intact columns, impressive arches and walls, and the scale of the spectacle.

PIAZZA NAVONA

Built under Emperor Domitian in 86 AD, the Piazza Nova was initially meant to be a venue for sporting events and festivals. It still maintains the shape of a stadium but where spectators used to sit now stand buildings surrounding the square. The transformation took place in the 15th century when the site was paved over, and a square was built in its place. It’s still one of the most popular public spaces in the city, and a stroll through it will enable you to view beautiful fountains, watch street performers, and unwind while sipping a cappuccino (before 11am, of course).

8 IDEAL SITES TO SEE ON A TRIP TO ROME

PALATINE HILL

Palatine Hill is the most central of the seven hills which Rome stands proudly on. Although it’s mostly covered in ruins, it still has some intact structures, such as the Temple of Cybele and the Flavian Palace. Admission to the Roman Forum will also give you access to the Palatine Hill too, a site where residences of prominent historical figures, such as Augustus, the first Roman emperor, were located. It also offers a splendid view of the city.

TRASTEVERE

After you’ve taken in all the sites, it’s time to unwind in the Trastevere district, which will give you a glimpse into the life of modern day Romans. This cozy neighborhood is located south of the Vatican and offers an unmatched atmosphere of a unique embankment no other European city boasts. You’ll undoubtedly appreciate its detachment from Rome’s tourist heavy centre. An added bonus; the quiet neighbourhood has dozens of excellent, affordable restaurants.

5 IDEAL TIPS FOR CAMPING WITH A GROUP

Getting in and amongst nature with the people you love? A cleanse of the soul and the lungs? Sounds like heaven to us. And to many others too, we think. No surprise, then, that camping is enduringly popular in Britain. To get the most out of it, however, a little foresight is required, particularly if the trip is on the more adventurous, and your group on the larger, side. With that in mind, here are 5 IDEAL tips for camping with a group.

DON’T NEGLECT THE PLANNING STAGE

Any type of big group event requires plenty of planning, even stuff occurring indoors and out of the elements. Camping, with so much of the experience left to chance, needs even more. That doesn’t mean preparing should be a chore or the responsibility of a single person.

You can designate certain people to be in charge of planning specific parts of the trip. One person can be in charge of location, another can be in charge of ensuring everyone has the proper equipment needed, another person can be in charge of determining what is needed in terms of amenities and comfort. The list goes on. Splitting up the planning and delegating certain jobs makes it easier to focus on one specific part of the trip to ensure everything is well thought out. You can even split the planning up into small groups to lessen the burden further, while also allowing everyone to get involved.

CONSIDER EXPERIENCE IMPROVING GADGETS

Just because you’re reconnecting with nature shouldn’t mean that you totally neglect the power of tech. Camping is a lot of fun as it is, but you can bring along some neat gadgets to make your time away even better. Some gadgets can be life-saving tools, while others are just there to increase your comfort level. You should considery your needs accordingly, but here’s a good place to start:

  • Multitool
  • Solar charge tent fan
  • Zippo pocket lighter
  • Camping lantern
  • Portable solar panel
  • Portable mosquito repeller
  • Grill stove

But before you invest in gadgets and tools, check the level of amenities on offer at your campsite. Which brings us to…

AMENITIES MATTER

Particularly pertinent when travelling with those who may not have camped before is the style of campsite you select. In an effort to make their first camping experience less intimidating, it can help to find a campsite that has plenty of amenities to offer campers, such as showers and toilets, at the least. Another bonus is having fire rings or grills, clean drinking water, and access to local food, making everything more seamless and hospitable.

Of course, most campsites won’t supply cutlery or crockery – so don’t forget to pack your own camping tableware. This is especially important for first-time campers to ensure everyone has what they need for meals and snacks throughout the trip.

KEEP YOUR GROUP TOGETHER

When you’re out with your group, especially when it comes to hiking, it’s best to keep everyone together. It can help to dress alike (team t-shirts at the ready!) so everyone looks like they belong together and are easily recognisable at a distance. You can take advantage of discounts with companies like Champion wholesale apparel, which allows you to buy in bulk. This way, if your group accidentally gets split up, it’s easy to see where everyone is if everyone is wearing the same color shirt; particularly useful in rural, rugged settings.

CLIMATE CHECK

If you’re camping in new and unfamiliar climes, you’ll want to make an effort to study the climate before you go; so much of camping is reliant on the weather playing ball, make no mistake. You’ll need to know what the weather will be like so you know what you’ll need to bring; you wouldn’t want to accidentally pack summer clothes if the temperatures are going to drop, neither would you want to be weighed down with winter warmers when temperatures are balmy. Check the weather in detail before you embark.

5 IDEAL THINGS TO DO IN GUATEMALA

0

Lots of countries claim to be a ‘melting pot’. But Guatemala is the real deal. In this sense, it is impossible to talk about a single, Guatemalan culture. The country has many cultural influences, with Mayan, Spanish, African and Mexican all shaping modern Guatemala in different ways. With so much intrigue on offer, it can be hard to narrow down your itinerary when visiting. What you definitely should include are these; our 5 IDEAL things to do in Guatemala.

VISIT A CHURCH

Guatemala is a predominantly Catholic country with churches that are often filled with Mayan decorations (and sometimes even animal offerings). It’s a unique experience to say the least. Some of the essential places of worship to visit include Santo Tomas Church in Chichicastenango and La Iglesia de San Andres de Xecul in Quetzaltenago.

TRY CHOCOLATE FRUIT

Guatemala is often credited as being the birthplace of the world’s favourite food. But the country is also home to a chocolate of a different kind; the ‘chocolate pudding fruit’. Carve one open and you’re met with a gooey, brown substance which at first glance could be mistaken for the inside of a chocolate fondant. Sadly, it doesn’t take like the beloved brown stuff, but it’s an interesting experience nonetheless.

TAKE A SALSA LESSON

Music is a huge part of Guatemalan culture. You’ll find African-influenced Garifuna music on the Caribbean coast, and classical music in world-class concert halls. And then there’s salsa, everywhere.

Salsa is often thought of as a Cuban obsession – and it’s true, the island is its spiritual home, along with the clubs of New York. But Guatemalans love to dance too, and in fact it’s one of the best places to learn to salsa. Antigua, in particular, is packed with salsa clubs and schools. Salsa Stylo-Antigua is one of the most popular schools, and they even do free Saturday classes. Along with learning Spanish, picking up a few salsa moves is one of the biggest draws for many visitors.

SHOP FOR TEXTILES

One of the most striking examples of traditional Mayan culture is in the visual arts and crafts on display in Guatemala. And the most beautiful – and accessible – example of this is the wealth of textiles you’ll see as you’re travelling around the country. Indigenous areas such as Lake Atitlán are full of some of the most talented weavers you’ll ever encounter.

Look out for traditional huipiles (a kind of colourful shirt) in particular. The patterns on these colourful garments are unique to different regions and a source of great local pride. Cintas are another specialty – a colourful woven hair band. You’ll also be able to pick up unique bags and purses too, in many local markets.

WATCH A FIREWORKS DISPLAY

Guatemalans are obsessed with fireworks. They are the soundtrack to many different kinds of public events ranging from a traditional Mayan religious ceremony, a soccer match, a wedding or even a funeral, the sound of firecrackers is a constant and you’ll hear plenty of ‘bombas’ in Antigua.

And don’t expect to get much sleep around Christmas (particularly 11 December, Virgin of Guadalupe Day) and Independence Day in September. There will be plenty of music and fireworks – adding plenty of excitement to the festivities.
