7 RESOLUTIONS TO KICK START YOUR NEW YEAR ON THE FRONT FOOT

Ideal for those looking to enjoy new perspectives after a rough 2020.

A new year brings a cathartic, cleansing appeal for many. Every beginning of a year is a chance for a new slate on which you can plan to start over again.

And never has there been more need for a fresh start and a carefully cultivated, more optimistic outlook than now. With that in mind, here are 7 resolutions to kick start your new year on the front foot, IDEAL for those looking to enjoy new perspectives after a rough 2020.

LET GO OF THE LAST ONE

We don’t want to keep repeating it, for fear it’ll reappear with a vengeance, but 2020 has been rough. Whether you choose to carry that negative energy into the new year, however, is up to you. By channelling the arbitrary excuse of a new digit on the calendar as a catalyst for change, you can approach 2021 with a fresh, positive perspective. In short, let go of last year.

SMALL, INCREMENTAL CHANGES

‘Out with the old and in with the new’. If only it were that simple.

But sweeping, wholesale changes to your life, love and career are hard to imagine and even harder to realise. Instead, set realistic goals with dates and deadlines, as enacting small, incremental change is much easier than rewriting your whole life script in one crazed and frantic session. This will form the basis for creating a plan that sets out your life goals for the New Year.

Accordingly, divide your new year plans into months and weeks and reflect on the ideas every month. This is a way of measuring how far you have reached, and the progress made can be motivating. Taking an analytical approach to your life may feel daunting, but it can reap rich rewards.

PRACTICE SELF LOVE

No, not like that. But rather, do your best to dial down the volume on that self-critical voice in your head. In recognising and acknowledging your own inner strengths, achievements and attributes, you’ll learn to have a more positive approach outwardly, too.

One way of doing this is by practicing gratitude. Many happy, content people swear by the keeping of a gratitude diary, in which they list 3 things they’re grateful for each day. Doing so has been said to rewire your brain to be more optimistic; and we could all do with a bit of that next year, right?

DISCONNECT, BUT CONNECT

We’re talking about that relationship with our devices and the internet, which only seems to have gotten more obsessive and time consuming during periods of lockdown and self isolation.

Next year, make it your personal mission to enrich your social cycle and make more meaningful connections, rather than endless memes exchanged on WhatsApp but nothing resembling an attempt at true, valuable conversation.

Spend time with your friends and family to build on your relationships. Sometimes you might feel withdrawn and antisocial, especially when stuck in a rut. This is the time to give yourself some fresh air by exploring the possibility of change in your inner circle.

FORGIVE & FORGET

As the old Chinese proverb goes; ‘‘to be wronged is nothing unless you continue to remember it’’.

Confucius had it right; you have to learn to forgive and let go. Do not hold grudges or transfer your dissent for someone into the new year because it will bring negative energy into your world unecessarily. Forgiveness, on the other hand, only leads to more positivity. Give it a try.

GET MINDFUL, GET SPIRITUAL

A wide ranging UK study into the health impact of the coronavirus pandemic released in September and covered in the Guardian found that ‘’in the early stages of lockdown 57% of those who took part reported symptoms of anxiety, with 64% recording common signs of depression’’.

A regular practice of mindful meditation can help you gain the perspective you need moving forward. Indeed, only ten minutes a day can do wonders for realigning your perspective. If you’re new to the wonderful world of ‘taking a moment’, there are plenty of apps offering guided meditations and mindfulness exercises for a monthly fee. If meditation doesn’t work for you, do still make the time just to sit still for a few minutes each day, enabling space for reflection on what has been, for everyone, a really confusing time.

CLEAR OUT

If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that all our ‘stuff’ and surplus possessions truly don’t bring us joy. So many have invested so much – both financially and mentally – in accumulating gadgets, gizmos, objects and items that we’ve forgotten to invest in our wellbeing.

A cluttered physical environment can distract you from what’s really important. Having a clearout of your domestic space can bring a clarity of vision which 2021 deserves. Indeed, house clearance is one method you can use to outsource your reboot and start afresh.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Kick-starting a new year right comes down to making necessary changes that brighten your life, streamlining your goals and your physical space, equally. Change can boost your mind and mood, and it is necessary if you want a new and positive beginning. So, if you want to make your 2021 better than 2020, start making those adjustments now.

HOW TO TELL IF YOUR DIGITAL MARKETING CAMPAIGN IS WORKING: THE IDEAL GUIDE

When you first started up your business, you were probably told about the importance of digital marketing and why you should focus on it as a priority to get your business noticed. When done right, such a campaign sheds light on where your new customers spend time and money, and helps you learn how to solidify your positions as a reputable brand.

Unfortunately, most people don’t learn much about the follow-up to this; keeping track of your marketing efforts, which is equally important to your company’s success. You can spend a lot of money on PPC campaigns and social media influencer marketing, but how do you actually keep track of your marketing efforts? How do you know if they’re working? Can you compare them to different methods to see what’s more effective?

With those questions firmly in mind, here’s our IDEAL guide on how to tell if your digital marketing campaign is working.

MAKING USE OF DATA AND ANALYTICS

First, one of the most important things to learn is how to make use of data and analytics. You can learn more about PPC reporting tools to see how effective your campaigns are and how you can track the information with the tools you have available. The idea behind this is to see exactly how well your campaigns are performing with detailed statistics. By looking at these numbers, you’ll be able to discover different areas to improve, you’ll find areas which you’re lacking in, and you’ll see where you get the most engagement.

Data and analytics are extremely important when it comes to deciding future marketing campaigns as well. They can represent many different things such as your failures and successes in different areas, which is why it’s vital that you start keeping track of this information. If you fail to do this, you’ll find that it becomes almost impossible to see how well your marketing campaigns are performing.

LOOKING AT YOUR ENGAGEMENT ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Another fairly simple way to see how well you’re performing is to look at your engagement on social media. While this doesn’t necessarily represent your market performance, it can help you understand how well you’re doing in terms of your online presence. A lot of smaller companies find it difficult to compete with larger businesses in pure marketing performance because their budget is a lot smaller. As such, it’s hard to stand out on regular channels such as PPC performance.

Instead of trying to combat these goliath corporations, smaller businesses tend to find more success when it comes to social media since everyone is on an equal playing field. A small business or even a single individual can build a huge presence that is on par with or even greater than larger corporations. It takes a lot of work and you need to be active on social media, but it’s well worth the benefits.

TRACKING KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

You should also make use of marketing key performance indicators to track your progress towards different goals. It’s a great idea to make use of digital services to improve your business and KPIs are an essential area to look at. There are a few of marketing KPIs that you need to be concerned about:

  • Sales revenue – How much revenue has your marketing campaign generated? This is one of the more important and obvious KPIs to keep track of.
  • Inbound marketing ROI – Seeing your investment in inbound marketing is important to assess your monthly and annual performance and budget spend.
  • Customer lifetime value – Keeping customers for as long as possible can help extend the value of other KPIs. Make sure you inform existing customers about new products and give them loyalty benefits to improve this.
  • Organic traffic – Traffic from organic searches can greatly improve your lead conversion rates. This is highly focused on search engine optimization and building more traffic to your website.
  • Landing page conversion rates – Landing pages are important when it comes to generating leads. Make sure your monitor conversion rates from landing pages to see how well they’re performing.
  • Social media traffic – Traffic from social media platforms can help improve your lead conversion rates, and it also highlights how powerful your social strategies can be.
  • Mobile traffic, leads and conversions – Lastly, don’t forget that optimizing for mobile can help improve your marketing efforts. With over half the users on the web using mobile devices, this makes perfect sense to focus on.

There are many more KPIs to keep track of to help track your business growth, but this is a great place to start for smaller businesses.

5 FOODS TO PACK TO GET YOU THROUGH THAT OUTDOOR EXCURSION

Ideal for an activity led staycation.

If there’s one thing that’s for sure, next year we’re set to see a revival of the Great British Holiday as staycations soar next year (need we say why?). And for the sake of our planet, that’s a very good thing. Enjoying a staycation instead of a far-flung vacay helps to reduce your own impact on the environment and set a good example to others, too

Luckily for us, our island of isolation is alive with plenty of things to do, especially outdoor activities. From coasteering along Giant’s Causeway and rock climbing in Snowdonia to hiking in the Yorkshire Dales, there’s plenty to do if you’re the outdoorsy type – you could even travel the road from Land’s End and John O’Groats if your ambition stretches further.

However, such an excursion, and indeed any outdoor adventure, needs supplies. Otherwise, you might end up regretting leaving that house you’ve become so accustomed to over the last year. To keep you nourished and energised, here are 5 foods to pack to get you through that outdoor excursion, IDEAL for an activity led staycation.

ENERGY-GIVING FOODS

Before you set out on your outdoor adventure, you need to enjoy a meal that gives you energy.

Your body requires more energy during outdoor activities due to increased metabolic rates and that metabolism can’t take place without energy.

Just as the name implies, energy-giving foods – “carbohydrates”, or ‘carbs’ to those who appreciate brevity – supply the energy that the body requires to function without fatigue or general weakness.

You want to select the best (as in, the healthiest) vehicles for those carbs, which include whole grains and foods made from whole wheat flour. Brown rice, quinoa, bread, and tortilla are good examples and even better energy givers.

Another good snack here is oatmeal, which helps you avoid calories and cholesterol in that it digests slowly. As such, you will feel full for longer and be able to avoid eating too frequently during the excursion, which may slow and weigh you down.

PACKABLE  SNACKS

Snacks to see you through your journey are the way forward. Think healthy and lightweight – as you don’t want them to weigh you down.

The enduringly popular Kendal Mint Cake has been popular among climbers, mountaineers, cyclists and runners alike. High in glucose, the snack is digested quickly when eaten, which means it’s a quick source of energy.

Trail mix is another popular choice. Typically dried fruits, nuts, sometimes chocolate and granola, this snackable and nourishing mix is full of energy-giving goodness. Nuts, seeds, nut-based bars or nut butter packs are another easy to carry snack.

Nuts not only taste great but they also contribute to good overall health when enjoyed in moderation. These foods contain healthy fats, also known as monounsaturated fats. According to experts, these fats will promote good health by lowering cholesterol levels thereby reducing the risk for stroke, heart disease, and other related conditions.

HYDRATING FOODS & WATER

Working up a sweat is, of course, desirable when you’re out on a hike or climb, and can be incredibly satisfying. That said, sweating is one of the key factors that contribute to dehydration, which can see heightened severity at higher altitudes.

As such, you should carry foods that will help replenish the levels of water in your body as you experience dehydration. To that effect, foods like watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, or grapefruits, which also contain sugar, are great.

Of course, carrying water is the best way to stave off dehydration. However, forget about sweet, processed beverages like soda or store-bought juice as these will have the opposite effect, and are actually dehydration.

If you do have to carry a sweet drink, let it be a fresh fruit juice that you made yourself from fruits with high water content and that contains no preservatives or added sugars. Rather than lugging a whole watermelon up a mountain, a Watermelon agua fresca juice – which according to the good guys at Sun Basket contains a whopping 8 cups of watermelon, blended – brings all the same benefits but takes up a lot less space.

In case, you’ve never heard about this company before, it’s similar to Hello Fresh or Home Chef; here’s a nice comparison post that shows how Sun Basket compares with Hello Fresh.

DRIED FRUITS & VEG

Though we’ve just been extolling the virtues of fruit with a high water content, dried or freeze-dried fruits and veggies also do a job for those on an outdoor excursion, packed with carbohydrates and offering a quick energy fix.

Fruits and vegetables are the best source of vitamins, minerals, and trace elements that we miss out on or, at least, get in minimal quantities from other food sources. For example, they are high in dietary fibre, a wide range of vitamins (including vitamins A, C, and E), folic acid, and potassium, in comparison to other food sources. The dried varieties are compact and easy to carry, and contain loads of the nutrients needed to push your hike forward.

FOOD WHICH DOESN’T CAUSE TRASH

If you love the great British outdoors, then it’s important that you leave no trace on your trek. As such, you should prioritise snacks which don’t use lots of unnecessary packaging. Should you need to wrap items, use reusable wrapping, such as Bees Wax paper, for responsible, sustainable transporting of your snacks.

WHAT IS A SMART LIGHT BULB & WHY SHOULD I BE USING THEM? THE IDEAL GUIDE

The automating of the home is one of the biggest technological developments of the past few years and progress only looks set to grow further as that technology advances and becomes more affordable. Often referred to as ‘smart’ homes, the future looks bright for those who love to control the domestic space via their voice, their phones or perhaps even an old-school clicking of the fingers.

And it seems like that future is going to be illuminated further still by advancements in smart light bulb technology. If you’re wondering what a smart light bulb is and why you should be using them, then here’s our IDEAL guide.

SO, WHAT EXACTLY IS A SMART LIGHT BULB?

For those who still haven’t had their lightbulb moment regarding the title, a smart light bulb is a product that you can fit into any conventional light fitting to turn it into a smart light. If you have a wall-mounted light fitting that takes a screw-thread or a bayonet light bulb, for example, then you can turn it into a smart lighting product simply by replacing the current bulb for a smart alternative. The same goes for ceiling-mounted light fittings and free-standing ones, such as standard lamps.

This smart technology will work throughout your home to provide you with features which simply can’t be realised via conventional lighting products. Indeed, you can even use smart light bulbs outside as they are fitted into fittings with the necessary ingress protection (IP rating) to protect them from dust and water. Oh, the possibilities!

THE BENEFITS OF SMART LIGHT BULBS

So, why should you be using smart light bulbs?

Firstly, the environment; bulbs make use of LED technologies to produce their light. This makes them much more energy-efficient than conventional light bulbs which use filaments. Filament bulbs actually make more heat than they do light so switching to LEDs makes sense if you want to lower your carbon footprint as well as your electricity charges.

Of course, with smart LED light bulbs, you can go even further in reducing energy consumption because you can set your lights to only come on when they are needed and to turn themselves off automatically when they are not. Sounds simple, huh? Whether this is done with artificial intelligence that predicts when you will need your lights or via a Wi-Fi-enabled motion sensor is up to you; the benefit here is that no unnecessary energy is wasted in the home.

Another big plus point about LED technology is that it can be used in a variety of ways in the smart home setting. Many smart light bulbs can be dimmed to optimise their output for different conditions, perhaps becoming gradually brighter as the sun goes down, for example, or even setting the tone as an evening gets more romantic, if that’s your thing.

The versatility doesn’t stop there. You could opt for a control system that allows you to alter the colour temperature of the light fitting to suit different moods, perhaps as an accent light for a dinner party or as a task light when you are working. Going further still, some smart light bulbs will change colour completely, thereby allowing you to come up with lighting effects that switch between reds, blues and greens. Should you be keen on illuminating your house in rainbow hues, then this is for you.

REMOTE CONTROLS

Smart light bulbs can be operated remotely, from a distance. Perhaps you want to turn your hall’s light on from your living room or switch your bathroom light off from your kitchen? With a smart light bulb that communicates wirelessly, this is eminently possible.

Even better, you can operate your lights from outside so long as you have the related app downloaded on your phone. This is ideal if you want to make it look like somebody is home for security reasons or simply because you want your home to feel inviting a few moments before you return from a long day out.

WHY CHOOSE SMART LIGHT BULBS?

Given their wide range of uses and functions, the possibilities of smart light bulbs may only just be becoming apparent. But that doesn’t mean that smart light bulbs are appropriate for everyone.

For example, if your kitchen is lit with a dozen or so ceiling-mounted downlighters, then swapping out all of the bulbs for smart ones would be a more expensive approach than fitting a smart switch instead. If you want to control each fitting independently from one another, then smart light bulbs might still make sense. However, if you simply want to be able to turn them all on and off or to dim them simultaneously, then a smart light switch would probably be the more cost-effective solution since you will only need one or two at most.

The same also goes for lights which do not have conventional, standardised bulbs. Think of under-cabinet LED lighting strips, for example. There are smart alternatives for these sorts of products already, such as Sonoff’s dimmable and weatherproof strips. That said, smart light bulbs are perfectly suited for one-off light fittings in points around the home where you want to achieve a much greater degree of control.

THE BOTTOM LINE

We hope you leave us enlightened about smart light bulbs. Should you be keen to consider more intelligent domestic design, check out this article on why you should switch to a smart thermostat.

LOCKDOWN CLEANING CHECKLIST: 10 PLACES NEEDING SPECIAL ATTENTION AT HOME

With Lockdown 3.0 looming, and people desperate for that sense of ‘new year, new me’, it’s no surprise that people are keen and concerned in equal measure to keep their homes tidy and clean as 2020 comes to a close.

We’re all going to be spending a lot more time at home as 2021 begins, and with a sparkling home comes the feeling of a fresh start. Today, we’ve teamed up with the experts at Cleaning Express, who offer a cleaning service in London, to bring you this lockdown cleaning checklist; here are 10 places needing special attention at home.

WASHING MACHINES

You may be surprised to learn that washing machines can actually be a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. Somewhat counterintuitive, we realise, but surprisingly, they’re not actually perfect at washing away germs.

To avoid this, we suggest running your washing machine with a specific washing machine cleaner, or, alternatively, set your washing machine on cleaning mode with a mixture of baking soda and vinegar at a 4:1 ratio inside the drum.

It’s also a good idea to leave your washing machine door open for a little while after each use to let it ‘breathe’.

TOUCH POINTS

When we talk of touch points, we refer to things such as door knobs and handles, which receive a huge amount of hand traffic during the day. From doors separating rooms to handles on kitchen cabinets and even your letterbox, it’s important you ensure that all are wiped over regularly as these can be places in which viruses can linger and subsequently spread.

FLOORS

If you have hardwood floors, we suggest scrubbing them with a tough brush to really lift that unseen dirt and grime. If you have carpets, you may want to try a carpet cleaning powder that works with any domestic vacuum cleaner.

Alternatively, to get rid of dirt, grime and smells from your carpets by sprinkling them with bicarbonate of soda (is there anything it can’t do?!) around 20 minutes before hoovering. If you like, you can also spray the carpet with white vinegar for added effect. While cleaning, if you discover any stains on those carpets, then soak a flannel in water for a few minutes and place it on the mark. Next, run over the flannel with a hot iron. You’ll soon find that stain will break up and be easier to clean afterwards.

SURFACES

From the kitchen to the bathroom and beyond, ensure all surfaces are cleaned thoroughly once a day using an antibacterial surface cleaner. This should extend to non-permanent ‘surfaces’ such as chopping boards, which see a lot of action.

LIGHTS

As well as ensuring lights are cleaned and free of dust, you may also want to go over light switches. These are yet another touch point that must not be missed. Again, anti-bacterial spray is ideal here.

SOFT FURNISHINGS

You’ll find your soft furnishings will have had a lot of extra use over the Christmas period, with Christmas Dinner induced food comas causing crumbs and chaos to fall on the sofa. Ensure these are washed regularly, in your newly fresh smelling washing machine. Wash cushion covers and pillowcases, too, and if you can, tumble dry afterwards.

HALLWAYS

Hallways can very quickly build up dirt, especially during lockdown thanks to more frequent use with households remaining indoors more. Focus on skirting boards and front door mats, especially, which are often neglected but particularly deserving of your attention.

FRONT DOORS

Front doors can become a harbinger of germs, and represent a rather fragile barrier between your home and the big, bad outside world beyond. Be sure to clean your door handles, as well as the locks and door chains, with anti-bacterial cleaner.

OVENS

As your oven will no doubt be getting extra use over the Christmas period, it’s a good idea to give it a thorough clean both inside and out; no one wants smoke filling the room from accumulated grease on Christmas Day, after all.

Wipe it down regularly on the outside and use a combination of baking soda and vinegar for an effective and affordable way to tackle any burnt on food inside. Other kitchen appliances used for cooking, such as microwaves and air fryers, need a similar level of attention.

CLOTHING

You do not need to wash your clothes on boiling hot washes. However, washing at 60 degrees with a quality detergent will be effective enough to ensure they’re clean and free of germs.

If you’d like to book in professional cleaning for your home during or after lockdown, please don’t hesitate to contact Cleaning Express today on 0203 633 0390. The team are more than happy to provide you with a thorough and efficient cleaning service in London to not only ensure you have a clean and safe home but also put your mind at rest during these unsettling times.

7 IDEAS FOR ORGANISING THE IDEAL VIDEO CALL DATE

Well, perhaps not the ‘ideal’ date. That, of course, would involve seeing your date in person, for real, within touching distance and tangible, possibly with all-you-can-eat pizza and bottomless beer thrown in for good measure.

But dating in the time of COVID-19 requires a little plasticity if you’re ever going to see your sparring partner in the flesh, in the future. Small talk now revolves around ‘is your mic on?’ and ‘I can see up your nostrils’ rather than enquiries about what they do for a living or for fun.

However, date nights on video don’t have to be awkward and there are things that the two of you could do to jazz up your virtual evening together. With a PG sticker firmly slapped on, here are 7 tips for organising the IDEAL video call date.

PLAN A THEMED DINNER DATE

We think a successful virtual dinner date relies on structure and form. Leave the evening to meander, and it’s unlikely to go well. That’s the unfortunate nature of camera-to-camera dating; it’s tough to let it flow and it’s rarely going to feel natural.

Theming the date by a specific country’s cuisine is a surefire way to give the fun some foundation. How about a taco night (bench the sombreros and fake moustaches, though), complete with a Mariachi soundtrack and plenty of sauce and salsa? Or, perhaps a Greek themed date, featuring meze, moussaka and ouzo, with a Zoom background of a Greek Island scene and a little dimotiko (or perhaps Abba?) playing gently just below the conversation for good measure? Sounds idyllic to us.

HOST A COCKTAIL MAKING MASTERCLASS

For your next virtual date night, why not see who’s the better mixologist between the two of you (with only you as the judge, admittedly) by hosting a cocktail making competition? A marvellous way to lubricate the fun, there are events companies currently curating such evenings, complete with expert tasting notes and professional tips; Design My Night have detailed an extensive rundown of the best virtual cocktail making events available in the next few months; do check it out.

HAVE A TAKEAWAY NIGHT

If you don’t feel like cooking, why not bring the restaurant to you? After all, hospitality venues need all the help they can get right now with takeaway orders, and doing so will ensure you and your date enjoy the same food.

Depending on how far apart the pair of you are, you may not be able to get the food from the same restaurant, sure, but you could order from somewhere doing nationwide delivery if you’d like to share the experience. Who knows, you might find that you both have a penchant for a Mcdonald’s Double Cheeseburger – you can tell a lot about a person from their favourite takeaway.

Right now, some of our favourite takeaways from top restaurants who are serving the whole country include Dishoom, Hame by Adam Handling, Made in Olstead by chef Tommy Banks, Sabor en Case, and Elite at Home by the irrepressible chef Gary Usher.

BRING OUT THE WINE AND CHEESE

Speaking of tasty refreshments, you can’t go wrong with having a wine and cheese night for your next virtual date. Feeling sophisticated? Play the role of a wine connoisseur with tasting notes printed out for a lively discussion of nose, palate and long finishes which linger.

As for the cheese, a good board needs balance and variety; it can’t just be a load of heavy hitting blues with no respite or contrast; wincing as you struggle down another bite of something ‘extra mature’ isn’t a good look on a first date, after all.

As a general rule, a selection of five is ample, providing enough variety to keep things interesting. The great thing about a wine and cheese date is that you can have some fun in the lead up to your date, choosing and discussing your selection of cheeses and wine together. For extra points, you could drop some cheese inspired puns into your date…’you’re lookin’ so gouda today”, “this might sound cheesy, but I think you’re really grate” or, if the date goes really well, “we brie-long together”…that kinda thing.

Finally impress your date by sending some pictures of your cheese combinations with our 5 IDEAL tips on how to create an Instagram worthy cheeseboard.

WATCH A FILM TOGETHER

After all the food and drink you may just want to end the night by bringing the cinema to your virtual date. So pick a film, sit back, and make sure you press play at the same time as each other! We wouldn’t want to drop any spoilers, after all.

Netflix recently added a lockdown friendly feature (Netflix Party) which allows friends, family or even first daters to watch a film together in real time. Complete with a chat window, logging onto Netflix Party and hanging out virtually might even replicate the oh-so-traditional ‘first date at the pictures’ experience.

For you to be able to watch the film in unison, and to make it feel as much like a genuine, side-by-side experience as possible, designate one of you to play the flick on their screen, then share a live view of your entire screen with Call.Group, who offer secure online meeting services with a range of features; from screen sharing to YouTube sharing.

OUTSOURCE THE FUN

Yep, we know that there’s an assumption that the date should be obligatorily conducted via your favourite camera-to-camera tool, but do you really want to spend more time on a platform so associated with a year of buffering conference calls? Kinda kills the romance dead, don’t you think?

Instead of ‘hosting’ the day and potentially jettisoning the dynamic of romantic interaction, why not to defer to the experts? You could use The Events Company, and more specifically their Gameshow Mania event, which is a state-of-the-art, multi-media event several tiers above those hastily arranged quizzes you’ve been hosting on Zoom. No one wants another amateur quiz, that’s for sure.

Or, the Together Works, who are specialists in organising virtual teambuilding exercises and challenges, all with a 90 minute time limit, could give your date that much-needed focus beyond the usual ‘how’s your COVID-19 year been?’ chit chat. Just a thought.

ONLINE SPEED DATING

Who said this had to be a one-on-one, for-your–camera-only affair? For pure efficiency, in weeding out those unsuitable for you and compiling a shortlist of potential dates worthy of meeting in person, online speed dating couldn’t be more serviceable. Event Brite is currently detailing daily online speed dating events in London, as well as many other cities, besides. Go on, give it a go!

THE BOTTOM LINE

Whatever way you choose to do your video call date, the best thing you could ultimately do is just relax, enjoy it and go with the flow.

Finding you’re not getting many dates? Not to worry; there are some failsafe, surefire ways to get your profile noticed and to stand out in the crowded, confusing world of online dating. These are those; our 5 IDEAL tips on making your dating profile ping.

4 EXTRA CLEANING CHECKS FOR PLACES OF EDUCATION IN THE WINTER MONTHS

No school or university campus has been able to remain completely free from viral infections during the winter months, and this is particularly true during the current global pandemic.

It is in the nature of educational settings that some mixing of students is inevitable. That’s why schools, further education colleges and universities are so often the centres of outbreaks of influenza in the winter months, of course. Because of this, many schools & universities hire a professional educational cleaning service to maintain their high standards of cleanliness throughout winter.

That said, Covid-19 presents a much greater challenge because it is so often asymptomatic among younger adults and children. Consequently, every place of education has had to adapt with more rigorous sanitising, cleaning and tidying procedures. For those looking to touch base (metaphorically of course, otherwise that base would need sanitising) on their hygiene procedures, here are 4 extra cleaning checks for places of education in the winter months.

GREATER DISINFECTION OF HARD FLOORS

If you have corridors with hard floors in your school, college or university, then usual circumstances dictate a simple sweeping and mopping procedure. But these aren’t usual circumstances…

Bear in mind that hard floors don’t trap dirt and microbes in the same way that carpeted ones do. This, it has to be said, is a blessing and a curse. But in the terms of the latter, all sorts of bacteria and – potentially, at least, viruses – can be kicked into the air and breathed in. As such, disinfecting hard floors more regularly than usual is a wise move. Usually, you should use bleach for this, but if your floor is porous and therefore not safe for use with bleach, then a mixture of water and white vinegar produces similar results.

DEEP CARPET CLEANS

Of course, hard floors are not the only problem when maintaining higher levels of winter cleanliness. Although they are better at holding on to germs in their fibres, carpets – even thin carpet tiles – can become breeding grounds for microbes. If they ever get released into the air, then they can cause a problem for everyone, especially those who already suffer from respiratory ailments.

Unless you own the specialist equipment (or have the budget to invest in a carpet cleaning machine which clocks in at at least £300), then consequently, booking a regular professional deep clean of all carpets is necessary. Doing so will not only leave your carpets looking sprightly but more importantly, will lower the risk of viral infection, too.

HAND SANITATION

One of the main ways that viruses spread from one person to another is by droplet infection. Although this is mitigated for by the use of face masks, it is also possible that students will touch surfaces where a virus may be lurking then go on to touch their face, perhaps to innocently rub an eye or to scratch the corner of their mouth.

Hey, we all do it. As such, hand washing facilities must be spotless. In most schools and university settings, this will mean a much more robust cleaning regime for each of the toilet blocks.

Professional-level cleaning of the toilets, the hand basins, the taps and the hand drying facilities should be undertaken on a daily basis to ensure students can sanitise their hands without immediately potentially reinfecting themselves afterwards. This means that door handles must also be disinfected as often as is practical, too.

STAFF SAFETY

It’s imperative that you make your place of education as safe as possible for staff, too. Hiring extra cleaning staff, installing hand sanitising stations at all desks, and setting up see-through partitions between desks (as well as eradicating ‘hot desking’) are just some of the essential modifications you should be making. For more thorough advice, do check out the government’s official guidelines on making your office COVID-safe, which covers everything from social distancing to face coverings, managing visitors and more.

5 MID-WINTER MAINTENANCE CHECKS TO MAKE IN THE RUN UP TO CHRISTMAS & THE NEW YEAR

Christmas is just around the corner. Not only has the tree gone up, but it’s already dropped half of its needles. Not only are in the mince pies in the cupboard, but there’s also only a couple left. Not only is the festive port in the drinks cabinet; it’s now only a thimble or two high.

Hey, we could go on like this forever, but there are more pressing issues at hand. Because with a select few members of the family potentially coming over for Christmas (responsibly, of course), it’s essential that the house is ready to receive them. With that in mind, here are 5 mid-winter maintenance checks to make in the run-up to Christmas.

CHECK YOUR FIREPLACE

It’s been a mild late Autumn and early Winter, but Christmas calls for an open fire, for a festive focal point and sense of flickering, crackling wonder. Before you light it up, it’s important to check your fireplace is primed and ready to spark into life.

Firstly, it’s time to make some checks externally. Remove tree limbs from near or above your chimney. Check the condition of the chimney cap and remove debris or bird nest, if present. Check whether or not the roof flashing is compact against the chimney, the mortar and bricks in the chimney are fine, the chimney crown is bevelled, and you can see the flue liner above the crown.

Inside, make sure that the flue damper is fine. There should be no cracked bricks or mortar in the firebox or hearth and no combustible material in the flue. If you have a gas fireplace, check the gas logs, igniter, burner holes, and glass door for latch problems or cracks.

CHECK THE HEATING SYSTEM

In the bleak mid-winter, heat brings reassurance and comfort. So, get your central heating system checked and the boiler checked or changed, too, if so required should be high up on your list of mid-winter maintenance jobs.

The experts at Moatside, who provide plumbing and heating in Northampton, recommend that you ensure your boiler technician is ‘’listed of the Gas Safety Registered, and an OFTEC approved installation, meaning (the) quality work…is safe, to industry standard, and designed to last.’’

If you’re looking to get those comfort levels dialled up significantly, consider getting underfloor heating to walk on a warm floor throughout the winter season.

GET THE ROOF CHECKED

A leaky roof is the last thing you want when you’re settling in for a period of domestic hibernation. Call a roof inspection service to check for potential issues before they occur; this is one occasion when prevention is certainly preferable to cure. These experts will be well versed in recognising the signs of incoming damage, which include rust spots and cracked caulk on the flashing, broken or missing shingles, and worn or cracked rubber boots around the vent pipes.

CLEAN THE GUTTERS AND DOWNSPOUTS

Clogged gutters and downspouts can hamper the foundation of your home and cause a build up of ice dams on the roof, which, trust us, is not what you want for Christmas. If ignored for a long time, repairing these small issues can suddenly get really costly. So, make sure you regularly clean your gutters of leaves, twigs and other fallen debris to prevent such a build up. Tighten the gutter hangers as well as downspout brackets if you’re keen to go that extra mile.

BRING OUT THE WINTER DÉCOR

Winter is the ultimate time to bring texture and warmth to the home. Not only because of that inevitable drop in temperature, but also as indoor aesthetics, and the comfort they bring, start to take on greater importance during the shorter days and longer nights. Introduce velvet cushion covers, thick, fluffy throws and flickering candles to create a warm Winter ambience.

Cover your concrete, tile, or hardwood floor with thick carpets or rugs if you don’t have an underfloor heating system, too.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Though Winter and Christmas provide cheer and a certain sense of magic in spades, the dropping temperature, chilly breezes, and frost and snowfall do tend to invite their fair share of trouble into the home, too. Fortunately, with a little foresight, planning and nous, you can avoid any seasonal household issues and enjoy a lovely festive season!

HOW TO WORK FROM HOME MORE EFFICIENTLY IN 2021 IN 5 SIMPLE STEPS

Ideal for getting closer to that elusive work/life balance.

Are you ready for the obvious to be stated? This year has not exactly been your typical working year, has it? The global pandemic has changed almost every facet of our lives, but it’s perhaps the shift from central office to hastily arranged laptop-on-an-ironing board situation which has been most keenly felt.

We’re all learning on the job here, and figuring out how to adapt to new working arrangements as seamlessly as possible. With 2021 looking like we’ll still be tap-tap-tapping away in our home offices, today we’re looking at how to optimise your output next year. With that in mind, here’s how to work from home more efficiently in 2021 in 5 simple steps.

MASTER THE ART OF SAYING NO

Work smarter, not harder, as the old saying goes. But you know what they don’t say? Yes, constantly.

Indeed, when the nation started to work from home earlier in the year, we might have been forgiven for thinking that ‘office’ life might be a little different; less pressure to complete deadlines outside of work hours, a reduction in pointless meetings, more independence and freedom…

How wrong they/we were. It seems like working remotely hasn’t served to free us from the unnecessary constraints of the physical office; the old issues still exist. Namely, your manager’s expectations that you should be working late, answering emails in your sleep, and taking conference calls about conference calls during your downtime.

In 2021, work on mastering the art of saying no. Give permission to yourself to put your foot down, with refusal delivered in a firm but friendly manner, and you’ll soon notice people in the office are treating you with more respect, not less. If not, then a little reasoning goes a long way. Remember, it’s better to do a few things well rather than burning the candle at both ends trying to get too much done.

STRENGTHEN THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN WORK & HOME

Domestic deadliner meeters (our new catchy title for those who work from home) might find their professional and personal lives blur into one, regularly.

It can feel pretty overwhelming to be working at your kitchen table, only to expect yourself to then spend the evening relaxing in the very same place as soon as you slam shut your laptop. What? You don’t slam?

If you can afford to, create a space in your home that is specifically devoted to work. Even if you can’t dedicate an entire room to being an office space, at least ensure you have a table or desk space which is for work and work alone.

Should your budget stretch further, look into renting a coworking or dedicated office space (check out this office space in Bristol for an idea of what you can get for your money), where you have the freedom to run your business in a bright and fresh setting, chat to other like-minded people (if you want to!) and go back to your home as an actual home.

Doing so enables you to steer clear of all those distractions which lurk at home, ready to lure you from your work at a moment’s notice.

THE POWER OF A COMMUTE

That transition straight from duvet to desk when you’re working from home seems to start the working day off on the wrong, slippered foot.

Rewrite that wrong and take those feet out for a stroll before you settle into your home office space for the day. Many freelancers and those experienced in the art of working from home productively swear by a ‘commute’ each morning, even if that’s just a walk around the block to catalyse a change of scene and mindset before a single screen is stared at. If your work affords you this level of flexibility, do give it a try!

MANAGE STRESS BETTER

You cannot control everyone else around you (looking at you, ‘boss’) or your environment, but you can control how you react. Stress can be incredibly detrimental to our health, causing problems with blood pressure, affecting the heart, causing headaches, and more. What’s more, constantly feeling under pressure can affect your concentration and focus at the best of times. And these are most certainly not the best of times.

For a happy, healthy 2021 and a productive year for your career, it’s vital you keep on top of stress levels and remain calm and focused. Check out these strategies for keeping calm in stressful times and work on applying them to your everyday moving forward.

KEEP NURTURING YOUR BOND WITH COLLEAGUES

Teamwork makes the dream work, as the not-so-old saying goes. Should you be keen to work from home more efficiently and effectively in 2021 (we know you are, that’s why you’re here) then it’s crucial that you don’t isolate yourself from colleagues. We all know that harmony in the office, even if it’s a virtual one, leads to a better functioning team, so endeavour to nurture those relationships with your coworkers to ensure you can rely on each other in the future.

Here’s how to do just that; our 5 ways to stay connected with colleagues when working from home.

FESTIVE FEELS: THE IDEAL JEWELLERY TO ACCESSORISE WITH THIS CHRISTMAS

THE IDEAL JEWELLERY TO ACCESSORISE WITH THIS CHRISTMAS

It’s not beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

The festive season this year has, without doubt, taken on a different complexion, but even after the year everyone’s had, it doesn’t feel right to settle for a shrug of the shoulders and a Christmas Day spent in your PJs.

In fact, 2020’s trials, tribulations and time spent indoors gives us more of an excuse than ever to dress up and make merry! We’d go as far as saying; you owe it to yourself. Here at IDEAL, we’re wearing our sequins and velvet black dresses to work every day already – and yes, we are working from home like most of the nation!

To accessorise our sparkly and festive Christmas outfits (and to match the glitter of the tree’s fairy lights) we’re having a lot of fun with festive jewellery this year – because the more pizzaz and glamour this year, the better.

Whether you want to add some extra sparkles to your already sparkly outfit, ramp up the glamour on your Christmas day ensemble, or simply bring the festive cheer to your every day in the lead up to the 25th, here’s the IDEAL jewellery to accessorise with this Christmas.

COSTUME COMMOTION

It wouldn’t be Christmas without some festive costume jewellery. And let’s be honest, it’s the one time of year when we’re truly comfortable embracing camp, kitsch and cheese, with tacky flourishes of the season a real joy. Make things more Crimbo than Christmastide this year and unleash your inner silliness – after all, festive costume jewellery can never go out of fashion if it was never in fashion.

The world of Christmas novelty can be a fun one, spreading cheer to all. Think Jingle bell earrings and bauble necklaces that you can always find at Claire’s Accessories or even in Flying Tiger.

The brasher and bolder, the better we say! Yep, we’re particularly fond of brooches that play music and the earrings that light up! That said, it can be easy to end up looking like a Christmas tree when it comes to costume jewellery. Remember that less is sometimes more.

SIMPLE, SUBTLE STUDS THAT SPARKLES

Though we realise we’ve just extolled the virtues of letting loose at Christmas, if you’re more demure than diva, then something small and delicate is the ideal accessory. Some simple yet refined diamond stud earrings can elevate and add some sparkle to any outfit, and bring an elegant touch to match the tasteful white lights of the tree.

The wonderful thing about diamond earrings is that, depending on their size, they can add a delicate sparkle or be a subtle statement piece. For something understated, a simple solitaire style is perfect. However, if you’d like to make more of a statement, then consider stud earrings in a halo design. A matching dainty necklace would tie the look together perfectly.

While the traditional round diamond studs show classic elegance, consider some star, snowflake or wreath shaped studs – it is Christmas, after all.

FESTIVE & FASHIONABLE

As the guys over at Elle Magazine point out, a happy medium can be found when it comes to Christmas jewellery – somewhere between those crazy costume pieces and simple subtle sparkles we’ve already spoken about.

Indeed, while the season invites us to dial up the glitz several notches higher than usual, you needn’t throw your usual fashion sensibilities out of the frosted winter window. There are a number of gorgeous, on trend pieces out there that are fashionably festive. We love Elle’s roundup of Christmas earrings that you’ll definitely wear again which exist “somewhere on a scale of subtle-to-extra-AF – without reaching novelty territory”. The ideal Christmas compromise, right there.

THE IDEAL JEWELLERY TO ACCESSORISE WITH THIS CHRISTMAS

BRILLIANT BROOCHES

The Christmas brooch – it’s something of a sparkly annual tradition. We’ve watched the Queen wear one during her Christmas Day broadcast for years – with some last year interpreting her jewellery choice as a way of showing support for remaining in the European Union

Whatever the message, there’s no doubt that brooches can add a festive touch to any outfit. From festive foliage inspired brooches to rhinestone jingle bells and other iconic Christmas symbols, adorn your cardigans and sweaters with just one for a subtle effect, or dozens of dazzling, jewel-encrusted design brooches for something all the more spectacular.

BLING ON CHRISTMAS

Ice, Ice Baby! Indeed, ice shouldn’t just be on the ground and in your cocktails this Christmas.

Consider the opposite of those demure diamond earrings we mentioned earlier. We’re talking about crystal drop earrings, rhinestone necklaces and Swarovski inspired pieces; big, brash and bling…we love it! Whether it’s cubic zirconia or real stones, if ever there was time for some extra be gaudily glamorous, it’s now. And remember, it’s Christmas, so you’d be forgiven for throwing all the usual rules of fashion, jewellery and etiquette right out of the window.

Now you’ve got your jewellery sorted, it’s essential you take care of it. Check out these 7 top tips for looking after your jewellery.

4 REASONS WHY YOUR COMPANY SHOULD BE EMBRACING eLEARNING

Ideal for businesses looking to encourage staff to develop personally and professionally from home.

We all know that learning is vital for growth – whether that’s academic progress or professional development – but for lots of people, the very word brings up memories of stuffy classrooms, boring textbooks, and uninspiring lessons.

Nowadays, however, things have most definitely changed. E-Learning (or electronic learning) has grown exponentially in prevalence, offering us new and exciting ways to use technology to educate ourselves and broaden our horizons. What’s more, it has become something of a necessity in recent months, allowing those forced to study or work from home access to knowledge and materials usually reserved for face-to-face use.

There are a whole wealth of advantages to digital learning, from improved opportunities for personalisation of the education experience to gamification and convenience. Should you be considering new ways to help educate your staff remotely and safely, then read on; here are 4 reasons why your company should be embracing eLearning, IDEAL for businesses looking to encourage staff to develop personally and professionally from home.

eLEARNING IS FLEXIBLE

Digital learning has brought an unprecedented level of flexibility to education and remote training. One of the most obvious ways in which it has done this is by enabling people to access learning materials and resources from anywhere with an internet connection. This means that wherever you are in the world, you can enrol on courses with the educational institutions that you are most interested in, on the courses that excite you the most, as well as receive training from your workplace and engage with your colleagues from a distance.

It also allows people to study at a time of day that best suits them, from the place that they prefer, and to work at a pace that is most effective for them. This means that even if you have work commitments or family obligations, you can still take part in eLearning.

In itself, this has opened doors for so many people who would otherwise be unable to continue their education due to their life circumstances. And that level of inclusivity and broadened opportunity is definitely something to be embraced.

eLEARNING IS CUTTING EDGE

eLearning is in many ways at the forefront of a certain field of technology, where personalisation of the digital experience can enhance the goals of the user limitlessly. It utilises a huge range of methods, software, and devices to help people get the most out of their education. This can be seen by browsing some of the recent and predicted eLearning trends through the eyes of industry insiders. The increase in Augmented Reality training, in particular, is hugely exciting for optimising learning opportunities using cutting edge technology.

Digital learning also uses a huge range of methods to deliver its product. From podcasts and video lectures to apps and games, the possibilities are only limited by the imagination of the creators. The industry is also attempting to make full use of technology such as the aforementioned augmented reality as well as virtual reality – both of which are likely to see huge developments in the near future and could spell a very exciting future for eLearning.

Learners can, for instance, now explore complex subjects such as performing precision surgery or take a human biology course through interactive simulations or virtual labs, making education more immersive than ever.

eLEARNING IS VERSATILE

Digital learning is not only flexible in terms of when and where you can study and using what sort of technology, but also the way in which you learn. We all have different learning styles, and through digital learning, we can tailor our education and workplace training to best suit our personalities and specific skill aquisition methods. For example, if you’re a visual learner, you can opt for video courses, or if you prefer audio content, you could use podcasts. And the beauty of doing so electronically is that the app you are using can learn from you, regarding training methods you respond best to, and adapt to be more efficient with each and every click.

eLearning is also versatile in the sheer number of subjects that can now be studied digitally. For example, you can learn a language through an app on your phone, you can take a video course on how to be a better writer, or you can listen to a podcast about how to get better at marketing your business, as well as access more job-specific content as recommended by your managers and mentors.

eLEARNING IS FUN

Last but by no means least, eLearning is fun! Gone are the days of learning dry facts by rote – the introduction of technology and gamification into education has brought excitement and enjoyment back into learning. This is integral to eLearning’s success, because research shows that we learn most effectively when we’re having fun. By turning learning into a game, which many apps have become experts at, we can increase our knowledge without even realising it. Hey, your employees might even choose to train because of the gamified nature of some eLearning platforms. Result!

Sometimes, this is done in a very overt way through video game elements such as character avatars and levelling up, but it can be more subtle. Even the use of humour can be extremely effective or introducing an element of storytelling to an otherwise dry subject. Technology itself is also a great way to make learning more fun through interactivity and visible rewards when achievements are reached.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Recent events have forced businesses, companies, managers and staff to re-evaluate the way in which they engage with their staff. Rather than letting remote working nullify the chance for personal and professional growth, eLearning has opened new doors and provided new opportunities to those who may otherwise have been excluded. Long may it continue!

DIY HAIRCUTS: THE IDEAL SCISSORS TO USE WHEN CUTTING YOUR HAIR AT HOME

Which scissors should you use when cutting your own hair at home? It’s a question on the lips of every DIY hairdresser who has scrutinised their out of control mane in the mirror and decided enough is enough. With new lockdowns, confusing guidance and ever-changing tiers systems making trips to the salon or barbers feel like a thing of the past, many Brits have decided to take matters – and scissors – into their own hands.

Finding a perfect pair of hair shears is half the obstacle to delivering a great haircut, so you need to choose wisely. Using dull kitchen scissors for cutting your split ends or nail scissors to finesse your carefully cultivated quiff is simply not a good idea; you will damage your hair and find the necessary precision wanting, too.

With all of these considerations in mind and with DIY haircuts the goal, here’s the IDEAL scissors to use when cutting your hair at home.

HANDLE TYPES

One of the most crucial factors when choosing scissors for home hair cutting is the comfort and convenience of holding the tool in your hand. The design and shape of the handle will determine the usability of the scissors and ultimately, how well your haircut turns out.

In terms of safety, the scissors should fit perfectly in your hand and not slip; that’s how somebody loses an ear. The most popular handle types include:

  • Swivel thumb shears have an asymmetric handle with a straight upper part that allows a low positioning of the elbow of the active hand. This leads to greater control of the blades;
  • Offset grip shears provide an open position of the hand that helps the hairdresser perform complicated and long haircuts without hand fatigue;
  • Opposing grip shears are suitable for cutting with middle finger and thumb, are universal and commonly used for a variety of haircut styles;
  • A left-handed grip is made for southpaw barbers to mitigate the inconvenience of using regular scissors originally made for right-handers.

It is worth paying attention to the availability of support for your little finger, as this will allow you to get the job done with reduced effort. Ideally, you would try out several models in person and first hand, in order to choose the most comfortable pair.

MATERIAL

Professional scissors are almost always made of steel, with other substances often added to increase their strength and sharpness. Buy hair scissors that are made with the utmost attention to quality and durability, and you can avoid having to regularly replace pairs gone faulty too fast.

Scissors made of steel and reinforced with cobalt tend to remain sharp for longer and are characterised by high durability; do keep an eye out for the latter metal but be aware that its mining practices have recently come under scrutiny and the ethics of its use are now in question.

Japanese and German steel is the most highly revered origin among professionals, but you should be prepared to pay for it. If you are looking for affordable scissors to cut hair at home, stainless steel will work for you just fine.

PURPOSE AND SIZE

Each type of scissors has a specific purpose in professional hands, and if you’re to take your home haircutting seriously, then you should consider the target function to get the best results.

Straight shears can be used as all-purpose scissors, but their functions will depend on their size. Longer straight shears are perfect for cutting hair when combined with the comb, while a shorter blade allows you to safely cut hair in problematic areas such as around the ears or neck. If you are looking for a pair to have at home, straight shears are the universal choice to cut split ends, trim bangs and more.

Thinning shears also come in different sizes depending on the number of teeth in the blade. They are perfect for men’s haircuts, trimming, blending, texturing, and working with thick hair, providing a more voluminous haircut. Professional stylists usually have both types of scissors in different sizes in their toolkit as it allows them to work on different hair types and cut both wet and dry hair.

For maximum precision, and particularly – though not exclusively – for men, you could also invest in hair clippers, which shave hair at specific, by-the-millimetre gradients.

BLADES

The most common types of blades are convex and bevelled razor edges. The latter is made of lightweight materials, making the tool convenient and nimble, with your hand less likely to get fatigued during the haircutting process. These scissors are optimal for cutting dry hair and are ideal for beginners who are cutting their own hair at home or in training to become a hairdresser. Often, bevelled scissors are often used in tandem with serrated scissors.

Convex blades, on the other hand, are much sharper, with a smooth cutting action. They are generally heavier and a bit more pricey, and require regular, professional sharpening for a more prolonged longevity. Though they favoured by pro stylists, amateur DIY hairdressers might find them a little tricky to manipulate.

High-quality hair cutting scissors should work very smoothly. At the same time, they should be easily closed and fixed in any position. The friction of the blades against each other should be minimal – the tool must be regularly lubricated and polished to do so. Finally, it is best to use hair cutting shears with an adjusting screw to configure their smoothness to suit the precise style you’re seeking.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Cutting your own hair isn’t easy, but sometimes (and with increasing prevalence recently) necessity dictates it. Whether your reasons are based on financial considerations, your favourite hairdresser being closed, safety concerns or you simply love that DIY mentality, giving yourself a haircut can actually be a richly rewarding experience. If you need more advice on the subject, then check out these top tips for a successful DIY home haircut.

With all that said, we would implore you to keep visiting your local hairdresser, barber or salon in the future; they need your support during this difficult time! And let’s face it, they are highly skilled with those scissors we’ve been discussing.

5 TIPS FOR THROWING THE IDEAL VIRTUAL OFFICE PARTY

You’ve gotta fight. For your right. To have a virtual Christmas parrrttaaaayy.

No really, you do. Because this year, with colleagues remote, recuperating or redundant, even the very suggestion of a festive office celebration has been met with groans so audible you could hear them without the help of a microphone. If you’re having to host this party, then you’re going to have to do everything in your power to make it a success, rather than a source of great resentment among co-workers.

Personally, we think that this year’s Christmas party, even if it is occurring remotely, is more important than ever; a chance to let your hair down after a difficult year, rekindle your bond with distant colleagues and bid farewell to 2020 in style. With all that in mind, here are 5 tips for throwing the IDEAL virtual office party.

CONSIDER SOMEONE ELSE ORGANISING YOUR FUN

Yep, we know there’s an assumption that this thing will be conducted via Zoom, but do you really want to spend more time on a platform so associated with a year of buffering conference calls?

Instead of having to organise the whole event yourself, why not to defer to the experts? Events companies have adapted to deal with the demand for virtual parties, and just a few of our favourites for the festive season include:

  • Hire Space, which curates bespoke virtual events for companies and their teams, and has a range of themes within their Christmas Party Packages toolkit. These range from online cooking webinars to their Big Top package, which includes private performances from comedians and musicians.
  • The Together Works, who are specialists in organising virtual teambuilding exercises and challenges, all with a 90 minute time limit, ideal for giving your Christmas party focus. These include scavenger hunts and even virtual escape rooms.
  • The Events Company, and more specifically their Gameshow Mania event, which is a state-of-the-art, multi-media event several tiers above those hastily arranged quizzes you’ve been hosting on Zoom.

KEEP UP WITH TRADITION WHERE POSSIBLE

Although the structure provided by outsourcing the organised fun provides a useful timetable for the evening, doing so can be expensive. And let’s face it, doesn’t everyone just want to get together and have a drink and a gossip at the office Christmas party, virtual or otherwise?

You never thought you’d miss Gavin from IT’s dad jokes, but the sense of normality which hearing his quips brings might feel strangely comforting this year. To keep up with some kind of theme or structure, do try to keep tradition alive where possible. If the annual office Christmas party always involves the opening of Secret Santa gifts, then make sure that occurs virtually. If it’s obligatory that the whole team hits the dancefloor with abandon each year, then prepare a playlist of all your favourite Christmas songs, share it with colleagues, and prepare an apology to your neighbours, too!

This is all about nurturing that connection with your colleagues from afar, so do make sure you keep office tradition alive where possible.

SCHEDULE UP

Whilst we’d love the event to be a complete free-for-all, a remote event can go south fast if it lacks a schedule and that aforementioned structure. It might be wise to set up a timetable for the event, and even send out minutes for the event, to ensure you don’t have people wandering off halfway through the evening to watch TV or worse, logging off entirely.

COORDINATE THE REFRESHMENTS

The food and, perhaps even more so, the drink, are what make the office Christmas party go off with a bang. As such, it’s what you should focus the budget and event on this year; well, there’s not much else to spend the company money on, hey?

Consider ordering a top restaurant’s ‘make at home’ meal kits for the team; the preparation of the dishes over Zoom and then the sitting down to eat could form the basis of the evening. There are some cracking Christmas at home delivery boxes available this year, should you be feeling particularly festive.

Alternatively, you could organise a wine tasting event. Though there are companies who can host this for you, it’s significantly cheaper (and more fun!) if a member of your team hosts this type of event. All you need to do is order wine for you and your colleagues – simply search Alcohol Delivery Near Me and find a suitable service – and print off some tasting notes for each bottle. You can also check out some online shops for drinks, like Long Shot, where you can order and send them to your colleagues. You could even turn the tasting event into a quiz.

Now, who is getting hints of cardamom and melon on the palate?

DRESS UP NOT DOWN

We’ve spent such a long time in our loungewear that we’ve almost forgotten what it feels like to dress up. The office Christmas party, even if being done virtually, represents the perfect chance to get your glad rags on and make an effort. Though you won’t be sneaking in a snog under the mistletoe with your office crush this year, it’ll still be a refreshing change to get dressed up.

As the host, consider framing the event to encourage colleagues to go the extra mile with their outfits. It needn’t be as formal as black tie, but billing the event as ‘glitz and glamour’ or ‘cocktail party’ will at least set the overarching tone. And if you’re looking to go that extra mile, check out these tips on how to do glamorous Zoom party makeup properly.

LOCAL LINGO: 8 TIPS FOR BRITS MOVING TO NEW YORK

Ideal for those looking to make the move from the Big Smoke to the Bigger Apple.

Though we may share a language and a certain similar soul, being a Brit in the Big Apple isn’t as simple as it sounds. Nope, just because you have an accent doesn’t mean your regards will be warmly received on Broadway or you’ll receive a free Manhattan at the hotel bar, for that matter.

Instead, adapting to New York life can be tough. But by reading on, you might just find the process goes a little more smoothly. Here are 8 tips for Brits moving to New York, IDEAL for those looking to make the move from the Big Smoke to the Bigger Apple.

BRUNCH, UNTIL 4PM?

Hey, it feels natural to start with the most important meal of the day. No, not breakfast, silly…

Brunch is a big deal in The Big Apple – a quintessential part of the New York dining experience and one of the most amiable times of an otherwise impossibly fast paced city. For us Brits, brunch means that time between breakfast and lunch, hence the amalgamation of the two words. However, for Newyorkers, brunch means a ‘brilliantly long much’ (only joking) and doesn’t usually start until midday and goes on as late as 4pm.

Should you be invited to Brunch (yep, it’s used as a verb) by your new friends in the city, make serious space in your diary. And remember, over easy doesn’t mean what you think it does.

LEARN SOME LOCAL SLANG

Back to that accent…

Guy Winch, a British psychotherapist (not biased, then), told The Washington Post that Americans associate a British accent with someone being “more intelligent, more sophisticated and more competent — and those are all qualities that a lot of people find attractive”.

And while it’s certainly okay to deploy your British accent with pride, don’t expect to be totally understood when you do so! What’s more, there are certain New York slang words that you should familiarise yourself with to make life a little easier. Here’s just a few:

  • Brick (n) – There’s cold, and then there’s brick, which basically means it’s freezing.
  • Schmear (n) –  “One bagel with schmear, please” essentially means a lot of cream cheese, and comes from the Yiddish term for the proper portion.
  • Stoop (n) – the stairs in front of an apartment – as in we sat on the stoop all night, quite possibly drinking from a brown paper bag.
  • Hun (n) As Time Out magazine points out, New Yorkers are busy bees and don’t have time for entire words. Hun means hundred – as in, “I’m listening to Bobby Womack, up on hun’tenth street’’.
  • Bodega (n) – A small owner-operated convenience store. A bit like our corner shop.
  • Pie (n) – Nope this doesn’t mean a delicious apple or cherry pie, it means pizza. If you want an actual sweet pie, best to say what type of pie before, as in pecan pie, or pumpkin pie. Although, knowing those crazy, innovative New Yorkers, you might end up with a pecan pizza. Perhaps.

HOW TO ORDER A PIZZA

This is still confusing to us. But Tom from Crust Kingdom, who writes on his site devoted entirely to pizza, explains;

“Pie is often used in New York where pizza is a noun which has an unknown commodity, in the same way as something like water. You wouldn’t order water, but a bottle of water. And so with pizza, you would order a pie, or slice. This basically translates to a “pie of pizza” or “slice of pizza”.

If you just said “a pizza” or a “piece of pizza” it doesn’t make sense there.

Since the by-the-slice culture is huge in New York, if you’re looking for a proper feed, it’s best to specify ‘pie’. For slices, check out Joe’s Pizza in Greenwich Village and Williamsburg Pizza in Williamsburg, for our favourites in town.

TIP SAVVY

If you enjoyed that pie and the service you received, then you’re probably wondering how to tip smoothly and generously. Unlike London, there’s not a one-size-fits-all figure for tipping various service staff.

In New York, gratuity is usually factored into pay for those in the service and hospitality industry, and as such, not tipping is a mean thing to do. Generally speaking, you should be tipping wait staff and bartenders upwards of 20%, and the same figure applies to hairdressers and taxi drivers. Should you be in that taxi because a hotel doorman hailed it, we hope you tipped them a dollar or two (hindsight, hey?). What’s more, housekeeping in that hotel you’re staying in when you arrive deserve $2 a day, at the least. It’s nice to be nice, isn’t it?

LEARN LOCATION LINGO

Though it might make your head explode when first confronted with central New York’s layout, it’s actually kinda simple when you get used to it. A few pointers; avenues run north and south whereas for streets, it’s east and west. Odd numbered streets go west while even heads east, and odd-numbered buildings are on the north side of a street, even-numbered on the south (anyone got a compass handy?). Wait, there’s more; in Manhattan, uptown refers to, generally speaking, anywhere north of Central Park, midtown is between 59th and 30th, and downtown starts south of 30th. Confused? Perhaps one of these might help….

DRINKING OUTDOORS

In London, we’re so used to savouring our picnics in the park, with a beer or two or a bottle of Prosecco obligatory. However, drinking outdoors in New York (unless eating in a restaurant or drinking in a bar with outdoor seating) is illegal. While you can’t get arrested for drinking in public, you can get a ticket and a court summons.

That said, according to Thrillist, “if a cop can’t see the brand name of your booze, they can’t write you a ticket. Put those two laws together and it’s clear that with a modicum of planning, it’s actually difficult to get in trouble for drinking outdoors in New York”.

Kinda makes sense, don’t you think?

CONSIDER A ROOMMATE

The pandemic has changed many things, and it seems that for those living in New York, it’s had a huge impact on their cohabiting arrangements. The NY Times recently reported that in New York, roommates are making a comeback. Studio apartments are no longer the prize they once seemed, with people keen for company and shared costs rather than the privacy and independence they previously craved.

Choosing the right apartment is one of the most important decisions to make when moving to the Big Apple, especially in Manhattan, because there is very little space. SharedEasy for room in Manhattan for rent offers opportunities in this respect, allowing you to choose from several different apartments and shared rooms, and gaining access to the company you’re craving.

Thanks to the possibility of using various similar Coliving companies, you will be provided with an opportunity to live in the best parts of New York at the most affordable price possible.

MAKING FRIENDS

Speaking of making friends, should you not be jumping on the bandwagon and settling down with a roomy, then fear not; the rumours about New Yorkers being an antisocial bunch aren’t true.

If you’re here for the long run and wanting to settle in smoothly, then making some friends with insider knowledge is essential. As we said, that ‘New York attitude’ shouldn’t deter you from getting out there and meeting people, but if you prefer to do that in a more structured setting, then that’s available here, too.

The City Socializer App is a great place to start, like a platonic Tinder for lonely souls, and facilitating meet ups and gatherings neatly based on your location, interests and expectations. Meetup.com provides a similar service. Or, you could try the couch surfing platform beloved of newcomers to the city, which can help you establish yourself within a social circle. Alternatively, you could go about things the old fashioned way, and go solo to bars, comedy shows and classes, and just be open. Either way, good luck!

Why Is Portugal Such A Popular Place For Brits To Move? Here Are 8 Reasons

Over 34,000 registered UK citizens live in Portugal, here’s why

According to the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) via Portugal Resident, more than 40’000 UK citizens were living in Portugal in 2022. With a country seemingly in crisis and rules set to change shortly in line with Brexit, Brits might be considering their options regarding a potential move abroad.

We’ve seen the Portuguese tourism campaign: “Brelcome”, which calls Britain “part of our history” and promises that the country will “continue to welcome British travellers no matter what happens.”

So, should you be keen to explore the appeal of the country more deeply, and consider why over 40’000 registered UK citizens live in Portugal, then here are 8 reasons why.

Fewer People, More Sunshine

Portugal’s weather is a major attraction for UK citizens who spend the majority of the year suffering through weather which would generously be described as ‘dreary’.

Compared to the UK, Portugal offers a temperate, pleasant climate with residents getting hundreds of days of sunshine annually. In fact, Lisbon is one of the sunniest capital cities in Europe, getting an average of 2799 hours of sun a year. Wow! In comparison, London sees under 1500 hours. What’s the opposite of ‘wow!’?

What’s more, though Portugal is around a third of the size of the UK (92’000 km² compared to 240’000 km², if you’re asking), the populations of the two nations are far more disparate; 10.3 million and 66.5 million, respectively. More room to spread out on the beach, then.

Tax Reductions

A study published last year by Accountancy Daily suggested that UK high earners pay significantly more tax than their European counterparts.

Interestingly, the UK has signed Double Taxation Agreements (DTA) with more than 130 countries, including Portugal. This means that as a British citizen, you’ll be exempt from taxation on your UK-sourced income in Portugal.

Furthermore, Portugal has introduced a recent law regarding foreign pensioners. According to this law, foreign pensioners in Portugal must pay only a 10% tax on their foreign-source pension. This will be available for non-habitual residents…

NHR & Golden Visas

There is a Non-Habitual Residency (NHR) program in Portugal, too. Citizens of the EU, EEA, or Switzerland can all avail themselves of this and obtain the right to be resident in Portugal, as long as they reside in Portugal for at least 183 days of the year or have a permanent home in the country. This tax system allows for breaks or even total exemption on income tax of expats new to the country.

This is particularly pertinent for UK citizens; after Brexit comes into effect, application for residency in Portugal is going to be significantly more complicated. This scheme, however, is a way to circumnavigate a loss of EU citizenship.

Another way to do this is through one of the most popular residency programs in the country to expats; the Golden Visa program in Portugal.

This type of visa can be achieved via a €350,000 property purchase or passport through investment in the country, which will lead to potential permanent citizenship after five years of complying with residency requirements.

The Algarve

Portugal’s southernmost region, the Algarve, needs little in the way of introduction. Blessed with idyllic scenery, and intoxicating and alluring in equal measure, the Algarve has put itself firmly on the map as Portugal’s flagship tourist destination. Stunning beaches, azure blue waters and picturesque fishing towns combine to make it the ideal holiday (or second home) destination. Which begs the question, why be a tourist when you could live there?

It should be noted that tackling the Algarve via public transport alone is costly and time-consuming, and you will, in all likelihood, need your own wheels to make the most of the region’s illustrious landscapes. Fortunately, there are plenty of options for cheap car hire in Portugal, both on a short term and more long term basis.

Healthcare Benefits

In recent years, Portugal’s healthcare system has consistently ranked as similarly efficient as in the UK, with life expectancy in the country now higher, too. The similarities don’t end there; there are many British speaking doctors and dentists in Portugal, especially in Lisbon, and the national health service in the country works in a broadly similar manner to the UK’s NHS.

Named the Serviço Nacional de Saúde (SNS), accidents and emergencies, consultations and standard treatments are generally free, or at least, heavily subsidised.

For those under 18 and over 65, the service is completely free of charge, but a small fee is required for GP appointments and prescriptions. Dental work is generally free, too. You’ll have to register at your local medical centre in Lisbon once you’ve confirmed residency. For temporary stays, a European Health Insurance Card, which you can apply for via the NHS for free, can be used to gain access to healthcare.

It should be noted that Brexit will likely affect UK citizen’s access to The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Via the aforementioned NHR or Golden Visa, however, you will still be able to carry that card.

Lisbon

Oh to be sitting on the banks of the Tagus somewhere in Baixa, with cerveja in hand and sun on face. And if you moved here, you could do this nearly every day. For us, Lisbon is perhaps Europe’s most alluring city. The socialist identity of the country and the openness of its citizens lends itself to a convivial way of life which welcomes in remote workers with enthusiasm.

Lisbon as a place to settle down has it all; a laid back yet exciting disposition, superb, proudly local cuisine (see more below), cobbled streets and attractive architecture, as well as pulsing confidence and an energetic, 24/7 nightlife. Moreover, it’s got a variety of beautiful apartments and villas to rent across the city… all the ideal ingredients which make Lisbon one of the finest European cities to live in.

A Safe, Peaceful Country

Speaking of socialism…

The 2023 Global Peace Index shows that Portugal is the seventh safest country to live in the world and the fifth safest in Europe. The UK ranks 37th.

Portugal has recently introduced a raft of progressive policies which will likely improve the serenity of the country further, with the left wing alliance leading the country and working on reversing painful austerity measures, reforming drug policy (decriminalization has seen a huge reduction in drug deaths) and levelling up the country. Long may it continue.

The Cuisine

Portugal’s cuisine is diverse, affordable and downright delicious, with a rich culinary heritage, fascinating regional dishes and some of the finest seafood on the planet. Rather than carp on (we’re making ourselves hungry here), we’ll point you in the direction of these tips on what to eat in Lisbon, Portugal for a flavour of some of the country’s most iconic dishes.
