6 Obvious Signs That Your Home Needs New Windows

It’s a sad truth of home ownership; that, unfortunately, those home improvement projects that are most often costly and time-consuming are also those you shouldn’t neglect.

However, window replacement is such a big endeavour that sometimes it gets pushed back or, at times, completely forgotten until a serious issue arises. But it shouldn’t be this way. While upgrading your windows takes a lot of effort, it can improve the overall appearance of your home and help you save on energy costs, too.

But how can you tell that such a renovation project is needed? After all, every house is different, meaning that the causes of problems might vary from one household to another. For this reason, we pulled together a list of indications and implications that will help you figure out whether the time to invest in new windows has come. With that in mind and without further ado, here are 6 obvious signs that your home needs new windows.

Your Windows Aren’t Energy Efficient

If you want to reduce your energy costs, especially if you have noticed an increase in your monthly bills, then it’s best to take care of this issue right away. If you observe that your windows are letting in too much heat during summer or aren’t insulating well during winter, it’s time to start looking for new ones. Investing in energy-efficient windows can help you save on energy costs and protect the environment at the same time.

It’s even more important if you heat your house with electricity. You might notice a significant difference in energy use, especially during a power outage.

Your Windows Are Noisy

If you hear strange noises, such as rattling or whistling, coming from your windows and there is no strong wind outside, this could be a warning sign that something is wrong. Try moving different parts of the window and see if those noises disappear or change their tone. Chances are, those noises come from worn-out parts, which means that you should consider investing in new windows as soon as possible.

You might need to inspect the frames and caulk for damage. If there are no apparent signs of cracks or splits, then you should move on to checking the weather stripping that seals the frame to the molding. If it’s worn and cut in places, chances are you won’t be able to seal the window properly.

Equally problematic but falling with broadly the same camp are windows that, rather than making concerning noises, are allowing too much noise in. Sometimes, all you need to do in such instances is change the glass or use uPVC window sprayers, but in more dramatic cases, the whole window, frame and all, may need replacing.

There Is Significant Condensation Between The Panes

Condensation between panes is a sign of poor quality or faulty installation, and it means that your windows need to be replaced as soon as possible. When water gets trapped between panes, it can cause damage and even mold growth if left unchecked for too long, which is why you should make sure to take care of this issue in a timely manner.

Metal Parts Are Rusting

If you notice that some of the window parts are rusting, it’s best to get in touch with a professional at once. This might be a sign that your windows are of poor quality, used, or that they were installed incorrectly in the first place. If your windows have been in use for years on end, then it’s best to have them replaced for safety purposes. This should be done by a qualified window installation professional to ensure that your new windows provide maximum energy efficiency and durability.

There Are Cracks In The Windows

The cracks can appear for several reasons, such as the house settling, the wood becoming too dry, or even significant temperature changes. While replacing the frames only requires a simple fix in most cases, the same thing cannot be said for older windows that have been in use for several years. If you notice cracks in the frame, it’s best to check whether they extend to the sashes. If they do, you are likely dealing with rot, so you should replace the windows fast.

Leaks Appear Around The Window

If you notice that there are water spots on your walls, floors, or elsewhere that are not coming from inside of your home, then you should consider checking your windows for leaks. This is one of the most common issues when it comes to windows, and, more often than not, it means that you need to get new ones installed. This is because leaks are hard to deal with and because they can lead to serious damage.

So, How Much Might A New Window Replacement Cost?

The cost of replacing a window is certainly higher than repairing it, and will depend on the frame material, size, and window glazing choice. The region of the UK you’re in will also play a part in the price; replacement windows in Glasgow, for instance, cost between £600 and £1500, whilst in London you could be looking at double that, at least.

The Bottom Line

If you notice that your windows are starting to show some of these signs, it might be time to replace them. It’s best to address these issues as soon as possible before the situation gets worse, which will make the renovation costlier and more time-consuming.

With the help of the tips and tricks provided above, you should be able to notice the warning signs and act on them accordingly to avoid substantial damage. Window issues are not to be neglected!

5 Outdoor Garden Buildings To Install For Summer

Ideal for creating a quick fix ‘home away from home’, at home, this summer.

Summer? Summer?! SUMMER!

It feels almost perverse to utter those words as temperatures plummet faster than UK PLC’s stock price post-Kwarteng budget, but there’s a kind of comfort in imagining warmer, brighter times as the snow threatens to fall.

For the sake our of happiness and sanity, then, it’s important to hone in on enjoying what we have, getting the most out of our garden space any which way we can. With the shortest day of the year behind us and a cost of living crisis making holidaying at home the new normal, if you’re to create a place of peace and serenity in your garden, and add a touch of structural intrigue and integrity, then perhaps you’ve considered a new addition to your outdoor space?

Without having the time or investment for a huge extension project, outdoor buildings offer the next best opportunity to create new space for relaxation, work and even entertaining, without requiring planning permission or too much in the way of construction work.

How you intend to use your garden throughout the summer months may well dictate the kind of garden building that you choose, but here are 5 outdoor buildings to install, IDEAL for creating a quick fix ‘home away from home’, at home, this summer.

A Garden Shed

Sheds are one of the most popular outdoor buildings within a typical garden, and they provide multiple benefits, the main one being the extra storage you can gain and wiggle room achieved in the rest of the house through it. In summer, freeing up that extra space indoors is invaluable, allowing for air to circulate and residents to breathe a little more freely.

Gone are the days of only standard edition sheds, the market now offers everything from against wall sheds to corner sheds and even multi-functional spaces.

Having a shed will allow you to keep your garden tidy and organised as well as providing an option for storing gardening tools, the kid’s outdoor toys and even the BBQ, so you know they’re safe and sheltered from extreme weather conditions, but more importantly, you’re primed to use your garden as a socialising space to the best of its ability.

OUTDOOR OFFICE

A Garden Office

Defined by its primary purpose, this is something of an undertakin, sure, but one which will reap benefits for many years if done right.

Installing a new build in the garden dedicated to being an office space can give #wfh a very different meaning this summer. In doing so, you’ll create a devoted area which will enable you to focus on your work and deadlines with renewed vigour. We all know that maintaining productivity levels during this topsy turvy time has been near on impossible, but erecting a space of privacy and function in the garden will enable you to get your professional life back on track, even if you’re still working from home for the time being.

In terms of aesthetics, offices which boast glass-to-ground double glazed windows are a fantastic option for those with attractive outdoor views, offering the opportunity to watch the surrounding nature and feel the warmth of the summer sun shining in while you work. On the flipside, a garden office essentially erected in a windowless shed has a creepy vibe which you well want to avoid.

OUTDOOR OFFICE

A Summer House Or Garden Room

A summer house or garden is a fantastic addition to any garden with the space to take it; these buildings are extremely versatile and can be set up to suit any need. Whilst the primary use of most summer houses is to promote relaxation and outdoor entertainment (hey, what better reason could there be?), these days they are used as everything from yoga spots to reading corners.

Summer houses and garden rooms come in all different shapes and sizes and can be particularly pleasing on the eye depending on the style chosen, meaning they work well within the aesthetic of a stylish garden which has sections dedicated to defined purposes.

As 365, a highly regarded garden room builder in Essex, tells us, if you’re investing in one, it makes sense to add some comfortable furniture so you can unwind and read a book out front, or install a table and some chairs so your family can gather around for an evening of playing games and spending quality time with one another.

Some also choose to add rollaway garage doors to their garden room, creating a more open, expansive space without actually taking up more invaluable outdoor real estate.

A Greenhouse

Whether you are an avid gardener or wanting to take on a challenge or a new hobby, investing in a greenhouse is a great way to enjoy summer in the garden, getting in tune with nature and the seasons, and beginning your grow-your-own journey in the process.

Greenhouses are available in small, medium, and large sizes so if you’re simply dipping your toe into the world of grow your own, it won’t need to take up too much of your outdoor space. or be an imposition, both when building it and visually later down the line. Greenhouses aren’t just for summer either, you’ll be surprised at just how many different types of plants can be grown in the winter months too; think broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage and kale, to name but a few. Never has there been a better excuse to eat your greens!

A Log Cabin

Log cabins are equivalent to a summerhouse in aesthetics, but bigger and bolder, acting almost as an additional room to the home. Though synonymous with winter breaks in snowy, desolate settings – perhaps as a place to write a forlorn, falsetto driven folk album – log cabins are actually a seriously cool investment if you have the space, as they can be used for so many different purposes and are as at home in summer settings.

Indeed, whether you’ve always dreamed of your own cinema room or to have a fully functional space for a home gym, a log cabin could well be the answer.

The Bottom Line

This summer, designing and investing in a garden that you will be able to enjoy is no doubt more important than ever, with holidays abroad prohibitively expensive making vibes at home more appealing. By making some small tweaks, you’ll be able to enjoy many a sunny day for the months to come.

Make Sure They Say ‘Yes’ With These 5 Steps To The Perfect Proposal

The COVID-19 pandemic affected the wedding sector in myriad ways, from a spike in divorces caused by the stresses and strains of lockdown to a drop in demand for diamond engagement rings during the crisis.

That said, it’s not all doom and gloom, particularly now things here in the UK are opening up and weddings are resuming. Interestingly, the Knot reports that in 2020, there was a rise in spontaneous, often impromptu proposals, with 50% being made within a month of being planned. As 2023 kicks into gear and life returns to something resembling normal, might you be planning to follow suit?

Should you have decided to propose recently and you want the event to be as meaningful and memorable as possible, then you’ve come to the right place; make sure they say ‘yes’ with these 5 steps to the perfect proposal.

Choose A Meaningful Location

If you’re going to avoid taking an L when you pop the big question, then there’s another L word you should be focusing your attention on. Not ‘love’, silly, but location.

The location you choose for your proposal is important. Like, really important. Much like a scene in a romantic movie, the set and scene is everything, and will define the memories of this most special of life milestones.

Ideally, you want to choose a meaningful location where you can perfectly capture both worlds: your relationship with your partner and the significance of the proposal itself.

Try to avoid the obvious cliches of a rooftop bar at sunset or a bent knee on an Eiffel Tower viewing platform, surrounded by tourists. If you’re a true romantic, you might prefer to pop the question in a place with significant meaning to you and your partner, so go for something special and unique to yours and your partner’s history; perhaps where you had your first kiss, your first date, or where you first locked eyes on each other?

Alternatively, a rural hotel retreat or one of the best spa breaks in the UK never fails! Actually, we assume it might sometimes fail, but anyway…

Pick Your Ring

This just in; if you’re thinking about proposing, you’ll need a ring!

Wherever you’re going, just remember to pick out the perfect engagement ring for your partner to make the moment last a lifetime.

Yep, we realise we’re stating the obvious here, but that sentence had a certain flow to it that we couldn’t resist. You might even say that sentence had a ring to it.

If you haven’t discussed the ring yet and want to keep it a surprise for your partner, a trusted friend or parent can help in getting the size and style just right. A little reconnaissance work might be also required in advance of your purchase. Show your partner styles of engagement ring that friends or celebs are flaunting on Instagram and take stock of their reaction. This will inform you of the kind of styles they like.

Ask For The Blessing Of Their Parents

This should be the first step for many when asking for somebody’s hand in marriage, particularly if you and your partner’s family value tradition, ritual and ceremony.

Traditionally, fathers of the bride give their blessing to go ahead with the proposal before it can be officially put in place, though if you think your partner may view this as a misogynistic gesture, it might be worth considering carefully how you phrase things. Perhaps asking both parents is a better shout.

Capture The Moment To Treasure Forever

To truly immortalise the moment you get down on one knee and your partner (hopefully) says yes, consider hiring a photographer to capture it. Hey, even if they say ‘no’, you might go viral.

Doing so ensures that this once-in-a-lifetime moment isn’t fleeting or over too fast, but rather, you have a keepsake of the proposal that you can keep forever.

If you’re concerned about having a photographer present during a private, intimate moment, you can tell them to be invisible — not literally, but by remaining far away or hidden, and photographing covertly.

Many companies also have proposal specialists who can help with the planning of various aspects of the big moment, making sure everything goes smoothly. Although, they can’t guarantee a favourable outcome, of course!

Keep Those Nerves Under Control

You want to enjoy this special moment as much as your partner, but so many proposals, however well planned or coordinated, are ruined by the nerves of the proposer. Make sure you keep those nerves under control so the whole occasion goes as effortlessly as possible.

Though the virtues of Dutch courage are extolled by some, you don’t want to risk being sloppy or losing your balance on one knee; you want to remember this, after all! Instead, stay smooth and suave and save the champers for after you’ve popped the question, and learn a few simple breathing exercises to keep you cool under pressure.

Good luck, and we hope to receive our wedding invitation soon!

An All-In-One Guide To Setting Up A Business From Scratch

Starting a business is no easy feat. There are a million and one things to think about, from coming up with a clever business idea to choosing the proper business structure to register your company. And that’s before you even start thinking about marketing and selling your product or service.

Luckily, this article has put together an all-in-one guide to starting a business from scratch. This post will walk you through everything you need to do to get your business up and running, from choosing an idea to launching your website. Read on to get started.

Research Necessary Licenses & Permits

It is vital to ensure that your venture is compliant with all appropriate local and state regulations. Before starting any new business, check with your local government to find out what licenses and permits are necessary for you to be able to operate legally. For instance, if you are planning to open a restaurant in Hong Kong, you will need to apply for an eatery license. You will also need to prepare your company’s Association Articles to comply with the regulations of the Companies Ordinance.

Often, many of these documents require specific applications and fees. It can be time-consuming to gather all the necessary paperwork and submit them according to local standards. However, failing to do so could mean harsh penalties or financial consequences, so it is always better to invest your time in completing the process properly at the outset.

Choose A Business Structure

Choosing the appropriate business structure for your venture is an important decision that requires extensive research and consideration. There are a variety of formats to choose from when you do opt to set up a new company, such as sole proprietorship, partnership, and LLC. Each has its pros and cons that should be weighed carefully based on the goals and scope of your business.

One factor to consider is each structure’s level of personal liability protection. Sole proprietorship, for example, has no legal distinction between you and your business, meaning that any liability associated with the business will be your responsibility. On the other hand, LLCs provide limited personal liability protection while allowing owners to enjoy tax advantages. It’s also wise to consider seeking professional advice from an attorney or accountant to ensure that you select the best structure for your business needs.

Choosing the proper business structure can make a big difference in your success – now and far into the future.

Find Your Niche

Starting a business from scratch is often daunting, but when done correctly, it can be gratifying. Successful entrepreneurs know that the key to success is finding your niche: pinpointing your skills and zeroing in on your passion. Aspiring business owners can use this knowledge to tailor their ideas to their strengths and interests. Doing so will help bring forth enthusiasm and momentum while starting a business by using the power of one’s passion as a driving force.

Achieving success when starting from nothing requires firm conviction. If you have identified the perfect blend of skills and interests, then you’ll be able to seize opportunities with genuine zeal and commitment toward success.

Research The Competition

Understanding who your potential customers are and what they need is essential to developing a successful business. Researching the competition can help you discover which strategies are working best for them so that you can choose the ones that will work best for your company. It is essential to understand who your target audience is, so you can tailor your products or services to fit their needs. This will allow you to create valued offerings that differentiate you from the competition and give you an advantage in the marketplace.

Researching the competition helps you gain insight into your customers, making it easier to build an effective plan that effectively targets your desired demographic.

Write A Business Plan

A business plan is an essential document for any organization, large or small. Starting a new business without a blueprint can often leave the rightful owners and investors confused and unsure of how to proceed. Creating a comprehensive business plan can help clarify by establishing a clear outline of your goals, strategies, and financial needs. It gives an overview of how much money will be involved, what resources you need, how these resources will be used when the required activities occur, and the measures for success.

This means that potential investors or partners can quickly understand your overall vision and objectives and assess their possible investment risks more accurately before deciding to commit funds.

To begin writing your business plan, determine the type of company you want to create and its purpose. For instance, is your business a service-based organization, an e-commerce store, or a product manufacturer? Then establish what you want to achieve and who your customers are. Once you have identified the proper structure for your business and know who you are targeting with your products or services, you can start writing out the steps that need to be taken.

Finally, include a financial forecast with estimates of potential profits and losses. Once complete, review it carefully to ensure that it accurately reflects your vision for the future of your business. Writing out a detailed business plan is critical to creating a successful venture.

Get Insured

When it comes to running a successful business, having the right insurance policies in place is an essential element. Protecting yourself and your business with the right coverage can make all the difference if something goes wrong. There is a range of insurance types available tailored to suit any kind of business, so it’s essential to research and understand precisely what protection each policy offers.

Shopping around carefully will help you find a plan that works for you at an affordable price, ensuring that your investments are safe from any unexpected pitfalls and ultimately giving you peace of mind. Get insured today -your business depends on it.

The Bottom Line

Starting your own business is a lot of work, but it can be advantageous. By taking the time to find your niche, research your competition, and write a business plan, you will increase your chances of success. Choose the business structure that makes the most sense for you and obtain any licenses and permits that may be required.

Finally, don’t forget to get insured so that you and your business are protected. Rest assured that with some hard work and dedication, you can make your dream of owning a business a reality. Good luck!

How To Keep Your Summer Beach Wedding Cool

Congratulations, you’re having a beach wedding! Somewhere sunny on a sandy stretch of beach with the waves gently lapping the shore while you say your vows sounds dreamy.

Less dreamy, however, is the sunburn, heat rash, hives and sweat that inevitably comes with a day spent in the sun. The last thing you want is for your beach wedding to be remembered as a sweat fest, after all.

With UK temperatures currently below freezing and summer feeling like such a long way off, it can be hard to conceptualise what your beach wedding might look and feel like. Not to worry, we’ve done all that conceptualising for you; here’s our top tips on how to keep your summer beach wedding cool.

Dress For The Weather

When choosing the perfect beach wedding dress, it’s imperative to choose a gown that is summer weather appropriate. Think light, loose and flowy fabrics that will keep you comfortable and cool. Silk slip dresses and lightweight strapless gowns are also a good choice for a beach wedding. Since, silk is a breathable fabric, it will keep you cooler if the weather gets too sticky.

As the guys at Sandy Cove Wedding Venue in Devon tell us, you should steer clear of heavy fabrics such as satin or brocade. And while it’s best to avoid restrictive gowns that are heavy and tight, don’t let the hot weather stop you from buying your dream wedding dress. Instead, flowy, destination-friendly gowns with all the romantic details and delicate embellishments represent a great start.

When it comes to the guests and dress code, do everyone a favour and encourage light linen clothes. It’s better to wear white linen on the beach during summer since white reflects heat from the surroundings and loose linen clothes provide comfort. Encourage your guests to bring hats with them too; we’re particular fans of scalloped hats with a wide brim, or a natural weave Panama hat for a beach wedding.

Consider The Time Of Your Ceremony

The sun is at its most potent for a few hours around noon and less strong during the early morning and the late afternoon/evening. As such, consider having your ceremony in the late afternoon when things are starting to cool down.

You’ll also be able to take wedding photos during the golden hour – that coveted timeslot just before sunset when the sky is redder and softer than other times of the day. Your wedding photos will be bathed in a warm glow and you’ll escape the harshness of the midday sun, which can highlight imperfections.

Alternatively, get the proceedings going early with a morning ceremony followed by a wedding brunch wedding lunch. As half of the day’s total ultraviolet exposure occurs around noon, use the hours to eat and seek some shade.

Beach Care Essentials

A wedding in sunnier climes means one thing, your guests are going to get sticky and maybe even sunburnt.

Preventing sunburn should be given top priority when holding a beach wedding. Consider investing in a sunscreen dispenser so you and your guests can top up when necessary. Handheld pretty parasols are great for creating shade and staying cool, too. Why not offer them to guests as a wedding favour?

Consider providing a sun care package for each of your guests. Here are some things to include:

  • Sunscreen lotion – Opt for good quality SPF protection of at least 30.
  • Sunglasses –  Look for lenses that are certified to block out 100% of harmful UVA and UVB rays, which is essential for proper protection but not always found in a cheap pair of high street sunnies.
  • A mini portable fan – A battery powered and super lightweight fan that your guests can use as necessary will be greatly appreciated.
  • Mosquito repellent – Need we say more?
  • Electrolytes – Consider adding a small bottle of coconut water or a sports drink.

If your budget doesn’t allow you to give each of your guests a sunny day care package, remember to send a note around to all your guests just before the big day reminding them to bring sunscreen, sunglasses and anything else they need to make their beach wedding comfortable.

Having Heat-Proof Make-Up

One of the best ways to keep your makeup from sliding right off your face on a hot, humid day is to hire a professional makeup artist.

If your budget doesn’t allow that then remember to choose light foundation and water-proof cosmetics. The first, and most important, step in your beach wedding makeup routine should be applying SPF. A lot of moisturisers already have SPF in them, but you should still apply additional sunscreen under your makeup. You can never have too much!

Don’t forget to use an oil-absorbing foundation primer – this is going to keep your makeup from melting off of your face in the middle of the ceremony. Again, many primers already have SPF in them, so that’s always a good addition.

Don’t forget to use mist on a makeup setting spray – they’re the easiest way to ensure your flawlessly applied wedding makeup stays on all day. Ask your Maid of Honour and bridesmaids to carry some makeup blotting papers in your clutch so you can absorb any excess oil without removing your makeup.

Summer Food

Let’s be honest here; the food at a wedding is the thing people actually remember, and for many, it’s the defining part of the day.  When it comes to a beach wedding, a barbecue is often your best bet. However, keep the theme of the barbeque in line with the country you’re celebrating your wedding.

If you’re in Jamaica, some jerk chicken, saltfish fritters and maybe even a shoulder of jerked goat. If you’re in Thailand, then you can’t go wrong with grilled fish, crab currys and sticks of chicken satay accompanied with a spicy som tam salad.

If a barbeque isn’t your thing, just try to let the country of your destination shine through via the food. When in Rome and all of that. We recently went to a wedding in Turkey and feasted on meze sharing platters… It was sublime.

Keep Your Guests Hydrated

Don’t let your guests get dehydrated. Be sure to choose summery drinks for your reception and ensure you offer a variety of non-alcoholic options in the heat such as virgin cocktails, old fashioned lemonade, cordials and of course water. Mojitos, a classic Pimms or the current trend for iced-tea cocktails will all help to keep your guests cool.

Finally, consider serving up drinks with electrolytes like coconut water. Electrolytes play an important role in preventing dehydration and keeping normal body function ticking along.

And with that, can we expect our invite in the post?

6 Reasons Why You Aren’t Seeing Results From Your Workout

For some people, sticking to carefully constructed fitness goals can be overwhelming, from understanding the correct form for exercises to learning which ones fit your goals in the first place. It can be quite stressful to feel like you’ve nailed your workout routine but you aren’t seeing any results after quite some time.

Becoming consistent with your workout routine can be a challenge, but when you’re seeing no significant results it can be even more frustrating. Whether you’re experienced with working out or you’re new to exercise as part of a new year’s resolution, it’s helpful to know what will hinder your results to keep you on the right path.

Fortunately, the common reasons which hinder workout results aren’t anything too complicated, and it might be something as simple as having a day off from exercising – but it’s important that gym-goers are aware to keep them on the right track.

Thankfully, the exercise experts at Fitness Volt have highlighted six reasons why you might not be seeing results, plus tips to fix them. Let’s dive in…

Neglecting Sleep

Never underestimate the importance of sleep. If you’re not getting enough shut eye at night, you’ll lack energy for your workouts and therefore won’t reach your full potential when it comes to your performance. On top of this, muscles release amino acids that build protein into the bloodstream during sleep which allows them to grow and recover, meaning you can get back to exercising sooner; aim for around 7-9 hours of sleep each night, even if it means going to bed earlier than usual.

Not Warming Up

Warm-ups are often overlooked, despite them being a crucial element of a workout. Without warming up, you won’t have your maximum capabilities and you won’t be fully prepared for exercises as your muscles won’t be activated.

Warm-ups will vary depending on your specific workout, but in general, you need to get your blood flowing into your body by some simple steps like jogging.

As well as this, perform a mobility routine to help with your joints that will be most used in your workout, such as arm and shoulder circles if you are training upper body. If you’re specifically focusing on weightlifting, you can warm up by practising the exercise with no weight – doing so will help with your form, too.

Skipping Food Before A Workout

Skipping a meal before your workout may sound practical if you’re heading for an early morning session as soon as you wake up, but it’s vital that you eat beforehand to give your body energy.

Carbohydrates in particular will give your body the fuel it needs, so opt for foods such as whole-grain cereals or whole-wheat toast with some fruit. However, stick to a small portion size so that you don’t feel sluggish for your workout.

Not Consuming Enough Protein

Protein is an essential nutrient in your diet, whether you wish to build muscle or lose weight. If weight loss is your goal, protein supports a healthy metabolism and reduces your appetite, while it helps to build muscle by helping to repair and maintain muscle tissue.

It’s recommended to consume around 1 gram of protein per pound of your body weight for optimal results, so consider adding foods like chicken, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, and walnuts to your diet which are all high in protein. If you struggle to reach your suggested intake, consider protein shakes which you can even have on the go if you have a hectic schedule.

Not Pushing Yourself Hard Enough

It may be easy to get comfortable with the same workout routine, but this habit can only lead to losing your determination by getting bored. As your body gets used to the workout, you’ll build strength and resilience and will eventually have the ability to push yourself to the next level.

For example, you will find that you will soon be able to run for a longer amount of time on the treadmill or will be able to lift heavier weights if you stay consistent with your workout. Pushing yourself to the next level avoids a plateau and keeps your muscles challenged to continue building strength.

Not Letting Your Body Rest

You may assume that the more days you spend in the gym the better your results will be, but if you’re not leaving any time to rest, this can slow the process down.

Over-exercising leads your body to exhaustion, thus affecting your performance when working out and preventing you from building strength. Not to mention, letting your body recover avoids injuries which would only cause lack of exercise in the long run.

Two rest days a week is generally the recommended amount, although if you are partaking in particularly intense exercise or new to working out you may need to take more depending on how your body responds.

And with that, we’re off to the gym!

Exploring The History Of Blinds With Yewdale

Homes, offices, restaurants, hospitals and a wide range of other buildings utilise blinds as their chosen shading solution to keep out the sun and provide privacy to occupants. But how many years have blinds been an essential shading solution? Pinpointing when blinds were invented, or by whom, is difficult, but the earliest versions of blinds were seen over 2,000 years ago. Here, with the help of Yewdale, we explore the history of blinds.

Roman Blinds

Ancient Romans are known for creating illustrious innovations and changing the world for around 1,000 years during their reign. The earliest form of window dressing could be linked to Romans, although this is up for debate.

The creation of roads was a ground-breaking invention, but dust and debris that was an unwanted biproduct created by horse and carriages using the roads. Today’s roads are constructed from tarmac and have curbs which trap any debris and stop it from flying around. Back in Roman times, roads were created using sand, different sized stones, crushed rocks and Roman concrete, which made a stable surface.

Roman roads were used by armies, civilians and traders transporting goods, kicking up dust as they travelled. Nearby residents would suffer from dust being picked up by the wind and blown into homes. To combat this, Romans hung dampened cloth over windows to prevent the dust from getting in.

It quickly became apparent that this solution helped to cool buildings and provided privacy to homeowners and other establishments. Over the years, this solution became common practice amongst the Romans.

What Happened Next?

Roman artefacts indicate that damp cloth was eventually replaced by more luxurious materials, particularly among the affluent members of society. The fabric was dyed to create various colours and patterns, helping to decorate buildings.

As centuries passed, the Roman blind became more sophisticated and began to resemble what we are familiar with today. Roman blinds are a type of blind that feature a single piece of fabric wrapped around the blind’s barrel. When the blind is raised using a drawstring control mechanism, the fabric folds around the barrel. The Roman blind is very simple compared to vertical blinds and other modern alternatives.

Other Early Forms Of Blinds

Due to their environment, the Egyptians suffered from the sun’s heat and sand being blown in the wind, leading them to create their own window screening solution. They walked down to the Nile and gathered papyrus reeds, which were much more readily available in Egypt than cloth. Reeds were placed next to each other and tied before hanging above a window.

On the other side of the world, in Ancient China, bamboo was tied together and hung in front of windows. These blinds could be rolled up and tied above the window whenever the light was needed. This early innovation indeed held its own since bamboo roller blinds are still available to this day.

The Evolution Of Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds are highly popular today, consisting of numerous horizontal slats which can be tilted to control the level of light entering a room. Contrary to assumptions, this type of blind wasn’t invented in Venice. Historians argue that the early versions of the blind originated in Persia between 1100 and 1500 A.D.

Europe got its first taste of the Venetian blind via the merchant city of Venice, which explains why they’re not known as Persian blinds. France was the first European country that adopted the stylish blind which was viewed as a luxurious product and proudly displayed by affluent people in homes. Early Venetian blinds utilised strips of cloth connected by string. A separate cord was used to raise and lower the blind.

It wasn’t until 1769 that Englishman Edward Bevan patented the first Venetian blind. He experimented with the original idea and replaced strips of cloth with wooden slats, which he positioned inside a frame. His new Venetian blind was much more durable than previous ones made from fabric.

John Hampson of New Orleans provided the final touch when he developed a way to control the tilt of the blind’s slats and ensure they stay in the desired position. Since then, the concept of the Venetian blind has not changed much. Slats are mainly made from wood and aluminium and new control mechanisms have been introduced such as wands, mono control chains and electric motors.

5 Ideal Tips For Eating In Vegas

When in Vegas, it’s easy to make bad decisions. Indeed, with the bright lights twinkling, music blaring and the iconic sound of coins crashing, it’s pretty difficult not to get carried away, be it by spending all your money in one night or reenacting a scene from The Hangover.

These bad decisions can also extend to your stomach. With around 4.2 million tourists visiting Sin City every year, there are hundreds of restaurants catering for the onslaught, some of them brilliant and some of them only with making a quick buck in mind; just terrible. You don’t want to be gambling with your dinner, that’s for sure, so with this in mind, here are 5 IDEAL tips for eating out in Vegas.

Off-Menu Specials

As the pledge of a thousand regretful hangovers goes…‘what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas’. Indeed, secrets are what legendary Las Vegas trips are made of, and for those in the know, one of the biggest culinary secrets is that some of the best dishes in the best Vegas restaurants aren’t actually on the menu. But with a sly wink and a whisper to the waiter and a nod of affirmation in return, you can impress your fellow dining companions with decadent dishes, shrouded in secrecy.

Avoid The Buffets

We all know that Vegas is about gluttony and overindulgence, and nothing says excess like an all-you-can-eat buffet. Since the 1940s, when resorts found they could keep gamblers inside by plying them with cheap food and drink, these extravaganzas have been synonymous with Sin City and are still an iconic part of the Vegas dining scene. Today the city has over 70 buffets and it’s a common sight to see people waiting for over an hour for that never ending spread. You can even get a buffet pass that gives you access to around 5 buffets in 24 hours, for one, set price. Gout is also included.

However, while the buffets in Vegas are undeniably good value for money, we say steer clear. Indeed, there are some sinister things lurking in those giant pans full of food kept at questionable temperatures. You don’t want to be hotel bed (and bog) bound, only able to stare at the walls and watch CNN.

Eat Chinese

Las Vegas is an increasingly popular tourist destination for the Chinese and the restaurant industry in Vegas has caught on, catering for Eastern tastes with ever growing enthusiasm. While of course you’ll find the usual Chinese restaurants serving American/Chinese classics like egg rolls and General Tso’s, Las Vegas is also the place to get real deal delicious Chinese food. From hand-pulled noodles at Beijing Noodle No. 9 to delectable dim sum and dumplings at Chang’s Hong Kong, Sin City is one of the best places in the U.S for Chinese cuisine.

Venture Beyond The Strip

While The Strip is of course home to an array of all-encompassing eateries, there’s more to the food in Vegas than this three-mile stretch. What’s more, if you venture beyond the main drag, you’re less likely to be paying sky high prices. The Fremont East District of Downtown Vegas is home to the city’s up and coming, on-trend food scene. This culinary hotspot has had an explosion of new restaurants opening in recent years with many innovative chefs trying out new concepts here and serving up some of the best food in the city, in the process.

Like any place, anywhere in the world, the best food is where the locals are at. Las Vegas is a huge city and a place over 2 million people call home. Check out the residential areas and see what they have to offer, specifically Summerlin in the west of the city which is renowned for its solid restaurant scene.

Chinatown, which covers more than a dozen blocks, is another area for foodies to explore – it’s home to just about every Asian cuisine under the rising sun. The Viet Noodle Bar is a particular local favourite and a delicious bowl of pho will cure any ills from the night before.

Try Some Of The Classics

You haven’t eaten in Vegas until you’ve had a shrimp cocktail. Indeed, the city is famous for this 60s classic and gets through 60,000lbs of shrimp each day. While the days of the 99 cents Vegas shrimp cocktail are gone, it’s still a cheap and cheerful option found on every corner. Prime rib is another staple of Vegas and the legendary Lawry’s (in the beef game since 1938) is the place to try it.

And with that, we’re in need of a well-earned lie down! We think we feel a food coma coming on…

6 Things To Pack For A Winter Weekend Away By The British Coast

We’re know what you’re thinking. A beach getaway? During this bout of sub-zero temperatures and travel chaos? In this economy? In these conditions? You must mad!

Yes, we are indeed mad, but there’s something rather romantic about a holiday by the seaside in the colder months of the year. It’s a still, serene kinda trip for a start, with the relentless crowds of summer all but a distant memory. Then there’s the frost covered sand; a magical sight to behold, make no mistake. But perhaps most pertinently in the current cost-of-living climate, a staycation on these shores represents an affordable and environmentally conscious way of doing things.

And it’s close to these shores that the best of British is to found. With that in mind, here are 6 IDEAL things to pack for a weekend away by the British coast.

Waterproof & Sunscreen

For anyone who has stepped foot in Britain, for even a moment, it’s well known that you can’t predict the weather. Dressing in layers will inevitably bring a heatwave, confidently stepping out in shorts and a t-shirt is a direct affront to the rain gods, and not slathering on the sunscreen will bring on a bright day, even in winter.

So, take no chances and cover all bases, packing wise. If you’re at the coast, exposure to the elements is enhanced tenfold; a waterproof and sunscreen are the least you can do to protect against the ever-changing conditions. And yes, you can still get sunburnt in January!

Coastal & Country Clothing

Should you be planning fishing trips, coastal walks or even a spot of sailing, some nautically-minded clothes will really get you in the maritime mood (and protect you against winter’s inclement nature, of course).

Fisherman’s smocks have been making waves in the fashion world for several years now now, as are lowe trousers (jeans with upturned hems) and even the classic, bright yellow angler’s jacket has been seen on the catwalk of late. With fish finger sandwiches currently being served in trendy gastropubs across the land, who would’ve thought Captain Birdseye would be a fashion and foodie icon?

Aran jumpers, otherwise known as the Fisherman’s sweater, are a good way to dial down the sea style without compromising on its basics. Navy, richer than black and a colour steeped in coastal heritage, is always a good look, especially beachside.

Of course, all of this nautically-inclined dressing may feel a little trite to some, in which case, pack a few British country clothing staples instead. Gillets, Barbour jackets, Tweed… It was all conceived with braving the elements of the UK in mind, and will have you feeling comfortable and looking effortlessly stylish. And that’s what it’s all about, right?

An Umbrella

With the random winter weather still on our minds (Christmas felt like Spring time, today feels colder than ever…), the answer may lie in a multifaceted solution. An umbrella will have all your bases covered, both metaphorically and physically. So whether it’s shade or shelter you’re seeking, there’s no better way to achieve refuge. There is one exception of course; the wind. Mary Poppins impressions at the ready, we think.

Sturdy Shoes

Coastal walks, whatever the weather, in bluster or blissful sunshine, are an essential part of any British break by the beach. Whether you’re treading a familiar path, or one off the beaten track, or perhaps simply strolling along the shore, some sturdy shoes are a must. You don’t have to go full walking boot, as these can look clumsy (their recent foray onto the catwalks….well, we’re not convinced). Just go for something with a good foundation, strong heel and a comfort conducive to a few miles on fickle terrain.

Maps

Unpredictability seems to be a bit of a theme here, hey? And a steady internet connection in rural Britain could certainly be labelled as such. When you’re off the beaten track, it would be folly to rely on your 4G to get you home. Go back to basics with a traditional, paper map and perhaps even a compass to guide you. Channel your inner Bear Grylls and embrace a simpler way of doing things.

On a similar note, you might find much to enjoy (and get lost in) in our guide to 6 remote, rural staycations for 2023.

A Fish-Filleting Knife

There is no greater pleasure when coastal-close than cooking some fresh fish, preferably caught with your own bare hands (or rod). If you’d rather resort to the local fishmongers, than that’s cool, too, but what can be really rewarding is preparing the catch yourself. Bring a flexible filleting knife and get stuck in. Even if you leave a little flesh on the bone, the feeling of accomplishment can’t be beaten. Cook simply with good salt and a squeeze of lemon while inhaling the nostalgic sea air for the best results… There really is no better seasoning than that!

And whilst we’re on the topic, do check out our guide on how to grill a whole fish on the barbecue. Now, who’s up for a spot of January cold-water swimming? Anyone? Anyone….

7 Simple Hacks To Make Your Home More Energy Efficient

Ideal for reducing your carbon footprint and impact on the environment.

Whether you’re looking to save the environment, money, or ideally a little of both, making your home more energy efficient has never been easier. Innovation and technology have led to profound changes in the way homeowners are able to track, tinker and optimise their energy usage via smart technology and ultra-modern, eco-friendly appliances, and many have embraced these advances wholeheartedly.

If you’re keen to live your life a little greener, and give your bank balance a boost in the process, then you’ve come to the right place. Here are 7 simple hacks to make your home more energy efficient.

Find Out Your Home’s EPC & Review Your Bills

We’re going to do this thing properly, right? So let’s start with an appraisal of your home. In terms of your energy usage, knowledge is power. And knowledge about your power? That’s where it’s at.

Did you know that you can get access to your home’s Energy Performance Certificate (its EPC), which provides invaluable insights into just how much it costs you to heat and light the property, as well as the level of CO2 your place emits? Scrutinising this EPC will illuminate any areas where you’re paying over the odds, and as such, wasting energy.

As a useful comparison, you can find yours and also check out the energy input of other properties in the neighbourhood on the government’s dedicated Find an Energy Certificate page.

While you’re examining your energy costs, it’s worth understanding how your energy bill is structured. Many people don’t realise that a significant portion of their bill comes from standing charges – daily fees you pay regardless of how much energy you use. These can add up to over £300 per year across gas and electricity.

If you’re serious about cutting costs, especially if you’re a low energy user or have a second home, investigating suppliers with zero standing charge could lead to substantial savings. These suppliers charge purely for what you use, which pairs perfectly with all the efficiency improvements you’re about to make.

Educate Your Thermostat

A debate which has played out on Peep Show, in the tabloid press and on the pages of this very magazine for years now…just what is the ideal thermostat setting?

Truth be told, it’s probably a few degrees lower than you might currently be enjoying. In fact, the Energy Saving Trust recommend that you should set yours somewhere between 18°C and 21°C. Interestingly, the concept of ‘room temperature’ actually has a numerical value – between 20 °C and 22 °C according to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language.

Rather than all these calculations and fiddling, one of the best energy saving tips for winter is to simply consider putting your trust in a smart thermostat, which learns the temperatures you like to keep in the house at certain times and automatically adjusts accordingly, meaning you don’t have to worry about faffing around constantly to find your optimum warmth.

The added upside of this convenience is that you waste very little energy heating or cooling your home when you’re not there. Automated thermostats have been estimated to save hundreds in energy costs alone, so they are an investment well worth it, even before you consider the environmentally positive implications. If you’re interested to learn more, check out our guide on why you should switch to a smart thermostat.

Take Stock Of Your Energy Sucking Appliances

If you’re consistently left wondering why your energy bill is so high, then rather than as well as pointing the finger at those thieving energy companies for fiddling your bills, it might be worth looking closer to home, too.

Actually, it might be worth looking inside your home. Give your appliances a good audit, ensuring that each is running to its half-full potential. Nope, that’s not a peculiar turn of phrase; one of the biggest culprits of excessive energy usage is overfilled appliances having to work extra hard. These include your fridge, your freezer, your dishwasher and washing machine.

And if you’re buying any new white goods, they will now come with an energy efficiency rating attached, ranging from A+++ all the way to G. Just like your school report, the closer to the start of the alphabet, the better.

It might even pay to replace old, energy guzzling appliances with newer, greener models. This Is Money reported in 2019 that ‘’Households could save, for example, £113 a year – simply by switching to a more efficient fridge freezer.’’ Frozen food for thought, indeed.

Invest In Some Solar Panels

Speaking of speculating to accumulate, if you want to lower your energy bills further whilst investing in the future of your property and the planet, then have you considered solar panels?

Though we realise this advice isn’t exactly faithful to the ‘simple’ hack promised in the title, solar panels do represent a smart financial decision, with households likely able to recoup the money spent on panels within approximately fifteen years through reduced energy bills. Take the time to learn more about how you can save money from free home energy grants to ensure you’re getting the best possible deal available.

Anyway, the Money Saving Expert agrees, suggesting that you save up to £360 a year on your bills. And that’s not all; installing solar panels could well raise the value of your property substantially, too. When considering your EPC (Energy Performance Certificate), your certificate will likely be promoted from a D to a band B through the installation of panels, which would likely amount to around £16,000 for your place’s value.

Install Low-Flow

Installing a low-flow showerhead is a straightforward way for you to reduce the general water efficiency of your home. When you install a low-flow showerhead, you can reduce your flow rate to less than 2.5gpm. Most conventional showerheads see 5gpm at a minimum, meaning your shower’s water output is halved with a simple device that you can find on Amazon for as little as £15.

Sure, your shower head will feel a little less amazing, but you’ll be doing your bit for the environment and your energy bills. What’s not to love?

More Mindful Water Use

The average homeowner can save hundreds every year by simply being more mindful of the amount of water they use around the home. The Eden Project suggest ten useful tips on saving water at home which we’re going to relay verbatim here, since this is all about being efficient with our energy, right? Here they are:

Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth – this can save 6 litres of water per minute.

Place a cistern displacement device in your toilet cistern to reduce the volume of water used in each flush. You can get one of these from your water provider.

Take a shorter shower. Showers can use anything between 6 and 45 litres per minute. Consider getting an aerated shower head, which combines water and air, or inserting a regulator in your shower, which puts an upper limit on flow rates.

Always use full loads in your washing machine and dishwasher – this cuts out unnecessary washes in between.

Fix a dripping tap. A dripping tap can waste 15 litres of water a day, or 5,500 litres of water a year.

Install a water butt to your drainpipe and use it to water your plants, clean your car and wash your windows. A water butt can collect around 5,000 litres a year.

Water your garden with a watering can rather than a hosepipe. A hosepipe can use as much as 1,000 litres of water an hour. Mulching your plants (with bark chippings, heavy compost or straw) and watering in the early morning and late afternoon will reduce evaporation and also save water.

Fill a jug with tap water and place this in your fridge. This will mean you do not have to leave the cold tap running for the water to run cold before you fill your glass.

Install a water meter. When you’re paying your utility provider for exactly how much water you use, laid out in an itemised bill, there’s an incentive to waste less of the stuff.

Invest in water-efficient goods when you need to replace household products. You can now get water-efficient showerheads, taps, toilets, washing machines, dishwashers and many other water-saving products. You might want to take a look at electric water heaters, too, which can provide you the energy saving of low power consumption.

Replace Your Incandescent Bulbs

Being energy efficient takes so many forms, and at its most micro-level, even the light bulbs you buy matter in energy efficiency.

Energy efficient lightbulbs are now fully developed, government approved and affordable, meaning there can be no real excuse as to why you’re not operating on a different wattage when lighting your home. Soon enough you’ll come to appreciate the golden glow of a more energy efficient bulb and enjoy not cowering in the stark, harsh light of the more powerful ones.

We hope we’ve helped you realise just easy it is to enact some simple changes within the household to reduce your energy output. Now, make sure you unplug your laptop after closing this article!

7 Jobs That Will Help You Stay Fit While You Earn Money

Hands up who succumbed to Ditch New Year’s Resolutions Day this year? Observed across the world every 17th of January, Ditch New Year’s Resolutions day encourages those who have been finding their willpower wanting to abandon their new year’s pledges in a guilt-free fashion.

And after the stresses and strains of the last three years, we don’t think there’s anything wrong with indulging a little in this bleakest of months.

We’re not alone; studies show that 80% of new year’s resolutions fail, but if you’re keen to keep to your pledges, then perhaps a more wholesale set of changes will help you stay on track.

The majority of resolutions concern our health, our fitness, and our careers, which can be hard to work on simultaneously in a sustainable way. But what if we were to tell you that you could combine those pledges to get fitter with pursuing a new career, and ultimately nurturing fresh motivation for both?

With that in mind, here are 7 jobs that help you stay fit while you earn money.

A Personal Trainer

Because health equals wealth, in 2023 personal training can be a lucrative business, make no mistake, with people taking their health and well-being more seriously and this is creating a huge demand for personal trainers.

If you are enthusiastic about fitness, you can turn your passion into profit by becoming a personal trainer. With the right amount of drive, ambition, the ability to motivate and encourage others, and a recognised qualification, you can become a personal trainer and help people achieve their fitness goals. This is incredibly rewarding, and not just financially.

That said, we don’t think it’s exactly an industry secret to say that a major part of a PT’s job is to look fit and project that obsession with fitness onto others.

You’ll be spending a huge amount of time in the gym each day, demonstrating workouts and participating alongside clients to give them extra motivation. All of this adds up to a job that keeps you in prime physical condition.

Read: 5 IDEAL ways a personal trainer can help you get fit faster

What’s more, the career of a personal trainer can be a fulfilling and lucrative one. Personal trainers are trained and certified professionals who have various skills and experience, not just on the bench press, but in sports science, sports medicine, nutrition, physiology and health.

If this sounds like the perfect occupation for you, and you have a passion for health and fitness, it’s a good idea to first consider a personal training course and, once that’s completed, do a PT Internship or two, so you can get to grips with the ins and outs of what is expected from you.

It’s a good idea to look into gaining professional qualifications as you progress in this role, as doing so will help you stand out and endear you to potential clients. In recent years, personal training has evolved into having a more holistic approach to health and fitness. Today, it is considered as part of overall wellness as opposed to just exercising and losing weight. To that end, you will have to develop a well-rounded understanding of what it means to be healthy and incorporate it into your own life…which is why you’re here, right?

A Lifeguard

People who work as lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of others when in or near bodies of water, such as swimming pools, lakes, or the ocean.

Not only are lifeguards responsible for watching over the swimmers and ensuring they are safe, but they also help other lifeguards in their jobs by performing CPR and other first-aid procedures when necessary.

Lifeguard duties can vary depending on the location of the pool or beach they work at. Some lifeguards may be assigned to patrol a specific area, while others may be asked to provide security around the pool during certain hours of the day.

Nevertheless, no matter where you perform your duties, you will need to be a proficient swimmer with sufficient physical strength to be able to lift people out of the water. Lifeguards follow the 10/20 rule in their work; once a potential problem in the water is noticed, they must respond in 10 seconds and reach the person in 20. This requires dedication and a lot of practice to achieve consistently.

You’ll also need to be trained in CPR and first aid, and be proficient in using safety equipment such as flotation devices, rescue buoys, and even resuscitation equipment such as defibrillators. Because of this, the skills learnt being a lifeguard could eventually be transferred to becoming a first responder (with some additional training, of course).

A Landscape Gardener

It’s the dream of so many to work outdoors, amongst nature, and with our hands. Not only can working in nature be great for our mental health, but many outdoor roles also help us boost our strength. Result!

People who design and maintain gardens, parks and other public green spaces are known as landscapers. The act of landscaping can also be associated with the construction of landforms such as embankments or hillsides. As you might imagine from the job description, it is a highly physical career, but unlike the first two jobs we’ve mentioned, you will be able to improve your health due to your work, rather than being compelled by it.

A landscaper’s daily responsibilities involve the provision of ongoing maintenance as well as the planting and building of new projects, both of which will improve your strength and endurance. And if you’re working in the countryside, or in an area with decent air quality, then you can enjoy the benefits of regular fresh air and sunshine, too!

A Takeaway Delivery Driver

Being a takeaway delivery driver on a bicycle requires a lot of physical activity which helps to keep you physically fit. Cycling is a great way to burn calories, build muscles and maintain cardiovascular health. As a delivery driver, you have to ride your bicycle for long distances and navigate through traffic, which demands a lot of energy and stamina. This constant movement also helps to improve your posture, strengthen your core muscles and increase your stamina. Additionally, riding a bike for work means you will be exposed to fresh air and sunlight, which are essential for maintaining good health.

Usefully to those in this field, apps like ShiftRacer.com can help you schedule your work more easily. On the other hand, apps like Find My Shift notify managers when employees check in and out. Automating your actions whilst also keeping fit… What’s not to love?

A Firefighter

No list of careers that require you to be fit and healthy would be complete without mentioning firefighters. Firefighters are some of the most physically fit people in the world, with the role involving a wide range of strength and endurance demands, from lifting heavy equipment to the inner strength required to run into a burning building.

Furthermore, it may be necessary to rescue bodies from a danger zone, and anyone who has ever tried to lift a grown adult can attest to the fact that it is no mean feat. A high level of fitness is also required to combat the fatigue associated with working long nights in mentally taxing situations. And the reward? Aside from being to help people each and every day, you’ll be working in what many consider to be one of the sexiest professions on the planet.

A Construction Worker

While different trades will require differing levels of strength (think bricklayer vs. electrician), being a tradesperson or construction worker both demand some level of personal fitness.

Construction workers have to stand for long hours and carry heavy loads. They also need to be able to climb ladders and stairs safely but with confidence, lift and carry heavy objects, and walk on uneven surfaces.

However, this physical fitness can come at a cost if not combined with a more holistic, healthy lifestyle, as it can lead to repetitive strain injury and enduring problems with the upper limbs. And that’s before we consider all of those sugary builder’s teas and biscuits that are impossible to resist!

A National Park Ranger

Whilst a park ranger is a job you’d perhaps traditionally more associate with the United States, National Park Rangers have a vital role to play in the UK too, working across all habitats from the mountains of the wild rugged uplands to the waterways of the sublime southern wetlands, and helping link both local communities and visitors to the National Parks.

Protecting natural spaces isn’t the only responsibility of park rangers, though it’s an incredibly valued one. A park ranger is also a first responder who protects visitors from the many dangers found in parks.

A park ranger’s job is not easy, as they need to work within a diverse set of demands and have a wide variety of skills. A park ranger has to be physically fit, have a good knowledge of nature, and have a keen interest in protecting wildlife. They may also be involved in research projects that help protect endangered species.

The job can also be physically demanding if you are on foot, patrolling areas with no roads or trails to follow. All of which adds up to a challenging but rewarding job, and one which will keep you in good nick physically.

The Bottom Line

It’s becoming ever more clear that the increasingly sedentary nature of modern work brings with it a unique set of risks. For work that keeps you on your toes in more ways than one, we hope you’ve found some inspiration today about jobs that will keep you fit and healthy.

5 Benefits Of An Air Fryer Oven Over Deep Fat Frying & Traditional Ovens

In Collaboration with

Put the KFC down and your hands in the air if deep fried food is one of your guiltiest pleasures? Woah, woah, woah, that’s a lot of rather greasy looking paws…

Obviously, we’re not alone in our love for the alchemy that occurs when hot oil and raw ingredients collide. Oh, the sizzle. The crackle. The aroma. The shatter…

But this deep dive into a bubbling vat of fat doesn’t come without risk. Firstly, the physical; deep fat frying consistently ranks as one of the most likely cooking methods to cause injury.

But perhaps more well publicised and pertinent are the health implications of succumbing to a life spent swimming in vegetable oil. Whilst we’re not here to scare you, a 2019 report published by the British Medical Journal via WebMD suggested that ‘’too much fried food may shorten your life’’.

Everything in moderation, of course, but if you’re looking to enjoy the pleasure of fried food without some of those associated feelings of guilt and the health implications we mentioned, then have you considered an air fryer oven?

Yep, this kitchen accessory, which only launched in September 2010, has risen hugely in popularity in the following decade, gaining acclaim for its ability to cook food quickly and crisply, and in a healthier way than traditional frying.

If you’re keen to learn more, here are 5 benefits of an air fryer oven over deep fat frying and ovens.

Firstly, Is There Any Difference Between An Air Fryer & An Air Fryer Oven?

We’re confident you’ve all heard of air fryers by now. In fact, in September of last year, the BBC reported that ”everyone” was buying them. But after reading the title of this piece, we’re sure you’ve only got one thing on your mind. No, not fried chicken, silly, but rather, an existential question; is there any difference between an air fryer and an air fryer oven?

Firstly, a little linguistic distinction. Often, the distinguishing term regards an air fryer ‘basket’ versus an air fryer oven. That should tell you everything you need to know about the difference; chiefly, that whilst both air fryers and air fryer ovens are countertop versions of convection ovens that work by circulating hot air around food until it’s cooked, the vessel in which they hold that food is different.

Air fryers use a mesh basket whilst air fryer ovens use a tray. The latter is usually a little larger, making it ideal for cooking full meals in its unique, (relatively) healthy, oil-free way. Because of that tray, air fryer ovens are also better for cooking cakes, biscuits, bread, and any other food product that is fairly wet when in its raw state. For keen bakers, an air fryer oven is a without doubt the smarter option.

Finally, due to an air fryer oven’s size, they usually come with more presets than an air fryer, allowing for a little more flexibility and scope in your cooking. Result!

A Vast Reduction In Harmful Fats

The most publicised benefit of using an air fryer (sometimes referred to as an ‘air fryer baskest’ as we previously mentioned) or an air fryer oven is that you can cook your favourite fried food to a crisp finish without the necessity for that excessive amount of oil which both deep fat and even shallow frying demand.

It is important to note here that air frying isn’t usually completely oil free, and air frying is still classed as ‘fried’ food. To cook in one without any fats would result in a dry, unpalatable meal, particularly if you’re cooking relatively lean meats such as chicken breast or a fillet of fish.

That said, air frying is nothing like the bath in oil that deep fat frying requires; misting your ingredients and the cooking basket with a little oil prior to cooking is generally sufficient. According to the BBC, ‘’Air fryers do use a lot less oil than deep fat fryers, and a 2015 study demonstrated that food cooked using an air fryer were substantially lower in fat. Less fat also means fewer calories’’.

The same principles, of course, apply to air fryer ovens.

On average, an air fryer oven reduces the amount of oil in food by almost 80%, instead relying on convection and advanced hot air circulation to make food crisp, quickly.

Fast, Efficient Cooking

So what’s the difference between an air fryer oven and a conventional oven, we hear you ask? And why shouldn’t I just use my oven?

Well, an air fryer oven cooks your food as quickly as possible by circulating extremely hot air around it, with the air mimicking the immersive, high temperature-led cooking of the hot oil in deep fat frying. Only, it’s air (to the tune of Gorillaz’ ‘Dare’).

It is this ultra-rapid cooking that gives the texture of fried food in the final product. An oven, on the other hand, disperses heat more gradually, using an element for heating rather than the rapid air technology of an air fryer oven.

This, in turn, makes the air fryer oven the perfect device to cook food in when you are in a hurry. You can cook chicken wings, for instance, in as little as 10 minutes using one, and get crisp-skinned results which an oven could only dream of.

In fact, as the air fryer connoisseurs over at HYSapientia tell us, most of your favourite dishes can be prepared in just as little time as it would take to deep fry them.

No Need For Supervision

If you’re lucky (crazy) enough to have a counter-top, deep fat fryer at home, then you’ll know that using one in the domestic space feels incredibly cavalier. Courageous, even. But of a more practical concern, deep fat frying requires constant supervision, lest something go wrong and you end up burning your house down.

On the flip side (incidentally, no flipping required here), cooking with an air fryer oven requires little to no supervision. All that you need to do is put the food you wish to cook in the fryer basket and set the settings, which include the temperature and cooking duration.

Once you start the air fryer oven, it works almost autonomously, leaving you free to focus on other tasks that require your attention. You may have to shake the frying basket once every 5-6 minutes, but that’s about it. Since it uses a timer, once the food is prepared, it shuts off on its own, so you don’t need to worry about your dinner getting burnt. To paraphrase John Torode, ‘’Cooking doesn’t get simpler than this’’.

Versatility

Some air fryers (both basket and oven versions) also come with preset options for your favourite dishes. In fact, air fryers are so versatile that they can be used to prepare not just your daily meals but also your desserts! Yep, you heard us right; you can satisfy your churros cravings without having to head to the food truck stationed outside your city’s main shopping centre.

In fact, it’s not only traditional fried desserts which can be cooked in an air fryer or air fryer oven. Baker Chris Tucker, via Insider, suggests that apple crumbles can be made on turbo charge in your new favourite appliance. You can even bake a cake in there, and even more interestingly, the convection nature of the heating system means an air fryer oven produces absurdly crisp meringues.

Effortless Cleaning

The relatively low levels of oil needed makes cleaning your air fryer oven a breeze, too, with the ‘frying’ baskets in an air fryer oven removable and dishwasher friendly. All you have to do is unplug the appliance and allow it to cool, then clean the basket and drawer in warm soapy water or simply pop it in the dishwasher.

Safe To Use

Since an air fryer oven turns itself off once your food is cooked, you needn’t worry about any gas leakages or overcooking and burning of food, as well as those times when you’ve forgotten to turn off the stove for the day’s entirety (don’t deny it, we’ve all been there). What’s more, you don’t have to worry about burning yourself or spilling oil during frying, as the cooking process is contained within the appliance, lid shut safely.

Is there anything this thing can’t do?!

The Bottom Line

Of course, air fryer baskets and air fryer ovens aren’t the total, all encompassing solution to your nutritional needs; they should be used in combination with other methods of cooking which use no oil – boiled, steamed, poached…you know the drill – and prioritise fruit and vegetables, both fresh and cooked. But when compared to deep fat frying and even, at times, oven roasting, air fryer ovens provide many benefits to the keen home cook. Bon appetite!

8 Of London’s Top Chefs Reveal Their 2023 Food Trends

Take a look at the previous decade’s food trends, and it’s clear that some were more successful than others. Whilst the cronut, kimchi and matcha have all most certainly entered the popular lexicon, other predicted food fashions ended up fads. Who remembers powdered alcohol or the all-purple movement? Nope, us neither…

That said, when made with the bigger picture in mind, food trends can be a window into where the world was at a certain moment. 2023’s predictions are no exception.

From a tinned fish revival and an even more obsessive dedication to nose-to-tail eating, all the way to the arrival of aquavit and the increasing popularity of sea moss, here 8 of London’s top chefs predict 2023’s major food trends.

Sardine Revival

Jonas Karlsson, Head Chef at Aquavit London

With people turning to cheaper ingredient alternatives, I expect sardines to rise in popularity with chefs and home cooks alike. Sardines are a great source of omega 3, delicious and versatile. They are easy to find in tins in supermarkets and are quite affordable, so they make for a great store cupboard ingredient. They’re perfect for adding to salads, pasta and even enjoying on toast; if you’re feeling more adventurous, create a sardine dip by blending with cream cheese, lemon, parsley and shallots, and enjoy with crackers, pickles and vegetables.

Sea Moss

Christian Onia, Head Chef at SUMI

At the end of 2022, everyone was talking about sea moss and its popularity soared. I expect this to continue into 2023. Part of the seaweed family, the best sea moss comes from Scotland and has so  far been mainly used as a garnish to add a final flourish of flavour to a dish. I think it is going to feature much more as an ingredient in the new year, with people incorporating it into dishes and creating recipes centred around it due to its incredible health properties.

A Revival Of The Spice Rack

Sameer Taneja, Executive Chef at Benares Mayfair

With rising costs and the after-effects of the pandemic, I think people view their food differently and are turning to local suppliers more. People want to support small businesses, and it’s part of a wider move towards being more sustainable. I also think we’ll continue to see an increase in the use of spices, which have cemented their place in the kitchen as part of everyday cooking. I expect more people to experiment with spices as they look for cost-effective ways to add bold, enriching flavours.

No & Low Waste

Vivek Singh, Executive Chef at Cinnamon Club

As restaurants become increasingly more conscious of sustainability, no and low waste is going to be even bigger in 2023, particularly by using unusual parts of vegetables and meat. I expect ingredients such as preserved stems of kimchi and rinds to be used within dishes, as well as fruit and vegetable peels to be dried as snacks and crisps. I also think that chefs will start to use all parts of an animal, including the organs, to create new dishes on menus.

Homemade Fresh Pasta

Oliver Marlowe, Owner Chef Director at Ganymede

For a comforting and cost-effective meal, pasta is the ultimate go-to and I think homemade fresh pasta is going to increase in popularity in 2023. It’s easy to make, uses relatively cheap ingredients, and can be made into a fun activity for the whole family to get involved with. It also offers heaps of versatility, not only in the sauce you make to accompany it, but also the pasta itself in terms of the shapes and flavours.

My go-to super simple fresh pasta recipe is: 630g ’00’ pasta flour, 4 eggs, 7 egg yolks, splash of olive oil – can be used fresh or rolled and air dried for a different style!

Kitchen Gardens

Sofian Msetfi, Executive Chef at Ormer Mayfair by Sofian

With restaurants increasingly aware of the importance of sustainability and adopting an eco-friendlier approach, I think there will be a continued trend to use as many ethical and organic ingredients as possible. Kitchen gardens are a brilliant way to do this – we are proud to source our fruits and vegetables from our own one-acre kitchen garden, located just outside of London in Essex.

Posh Pub Snacks

David Waller, Head Chef at The Spread Eagle

There is a growing appetite for posh pub snacks and one menu item hitting menus across the country is the nugget. At the Spread Eagle, the pub introduced its irresistibly cheesy Pitchfork cheddar nugget just a few months back which is a variation to the traditional chicken iteration. As the menu is based on nostalgic foods – taking childhood favourites and making them seasonal and British – it made perfect sense to tap into this and it has become a bestseller!

More Korean & South East Asian

Aman Lakhiani, Chef Patron and Founder at Junsei

People are looking for real value and heart-warming meals, and with this a more authentic home cooking style from different regions could be more represented in restaurants across London. Compared to other countries there is still a lack of diversity in Korean restaurants here, I think group dining will grow, and there will be a growth in South East Asian cuisine as well.

And on that note, why not check out our guide to the best Thai restaurants in London.

Here Are 3 Major Drinks Trends To Watch Out For In 2023, For Good Measure…

Aquavit

Mariella Franciosi, Assistant General Manager and Beverage Manager at Aquavit London

I believe 2023 is going to be the year of aquavit, and I’m not just saying that! In the same way Mezcal captivated customers in 2022, I think aquavit is set to do so next. Aquavit is a Scandinavian produced spirit distilled from grain or potatoes that is flavoured with a variety of herbs and botanicals; it’s very similar to gin and works beautifully when paired with tonics. Given the boom gin has experienced in recent years, I expect aquavit to be as well received in the coming months.

English Wine

Robert MacCulloch MW, Head Winemaker at Hattingley Valley

In terms of English wine production and products, the industry is developing so quickly and what’s becoming apparent is a real focus on environmental sustainability. People’s general attitudes towards consumption are shifting, and many are keen to minimise their impact on the planet with the food and drink they enjoy, even down to a glass of wine.

At Hattingley Valley, sustainability is a real focus and we’ve made great strides in vineyard sustainability this year and hope to continue this into 2023 to match consumer demand.

Low & No Alcohol

Rizwan Khan, General Manager at Junsei

We’re expecting to see a big focus on low and no alcoholic beverages with a lot of new product development in this area – from beers to sparkling wines – to meet the demand from consumers not drinking, particularly in the first few months of the year.

For those who are drinking, 2023 should see Shochu (a Japanese distilled beverage made from barley, brown sugar and sweet potato mainly) getting the attention it deserves.

Alongside being a beautiful beverage, a two-ounce serving of shochu contains only 35 calories and with the recent law changes surrounding calories on menus, it’s a great choice for those looking for alcohol with a lower calorie intake.

Whilst food trends come and go, there’s no beating a traditional English Breakfast, in our humble opinion. Check out our guide to London’s best fry-ups here. You won’t regret it!

2023’s Best Women’s Cruiser Bikes & The Features To Look Out For

Move over Lance Armstrong, Bradley Wiggins, Fausto Coppi and co. There’s a new breed of cyclist in town and they’re looking for something fun, easy to ride, and comfortable.

No really, move over; your bicycle is blocking traffic…

Anyway, about that comfortable ride; we’re talking about the women’s cruiser bike. These bikes are built with the female frame in mind, meaning they’ve got a lower centre of gravity than other road bikes to make them a little more appealing to new riders.

That increased appeal, it should be noted, has been reflected in record numbers of female bikers, spurred on by urban bike share schemes, the knock-on effects of a pandemic-related decrease in road traffic, and growing concern about the environmental impact of cars.

With so many brands now manufacturing women’s cruisers in response, it can be tempting to go out and buy the first bike you see – but this is not always the best idea. In fact, it’s never the best idea.

Instead, here’s a little guidance on the subject; our thoughts on 2023’s best women’s cruiser bikes and the features to look out for.

What Is A Women’s Cruiser Bike?

In case you couldn’t guess by the title and/or introduction, women’s cruisers are designed for, erm, women and cruising. These bikes are specifically aimed at improving comfort, control, and agility for female riders. This is done by reducing the bike’s stopping distance, improving the bike’s steering control, and increasing comfort due to a lower seat height.

This, along with an increased proportion of lighter-weight components, makes women’s cruisers a great choice for female commuters looking to sashay in and out of traffic effortlessly.

That’s not to say that it’s obligatory to live in urban confines if you’re to get the most out of your cruiser bike. In fact, there are a whole range of different designs aimed at different lifestyles, whether that’s a women’s beach cruiser bike for those who live by the sea, or a hybrid version for those anticipating meeting some particularly steep hills.

Accordingly, we’ve selected four of our favourite models that respond to the various unique needs of the rider most capably. Let’s dive in…

How To See The Northern Lights At Their Very Best

This just in; according to research conducted by How To Adult, seeing the Northern Lights ranks as the number one adventure on the world’s collective bucket list.

Indeed, this entrancing, enchanting phenomenon needs to be seen to be believed, and is truly deserving of its reputation as one of the world’s great natural wonders. If you do get the chance to see it for yourself, this guide should help you make the most of the experience. Here’s how to see the Northern Lights at their very best.

Go On A Cruise

A dedicated cruise to take in the Northern Lights is arguably the finest way to see this natural spectacle as it takes you to remote areas of Norway with unobstructed views of the sky. Silversea Cruises are particularly good if you want the very best way to see the Northern Lights – or Aurora Borealis – and because there are limited numbers, you won’t feel overwhelmed or overcrowded.

Be Flexible

You will need to be flexible and adaptable if you want to increase your chances of seeing the Northern Lights in all their full and splendid glory, which could involve staying in the area for more than a day. Though there are a whole host of vantage points to catch the spectacle, the best is perhaps Tromso in Norway.

The city is a great place to spend time in, regardless of the strength of the Aurora going on above it, with Tromso boasting more pubs per capita than any other city in Norway. Flights from London are direct, and take around 3 and a half hours.

Other places which take in the Northern Lights include the Icelandic capital Reykjavik, Fairbanks in Alaska, Finnish Lapland, and Yukon in Canada.

Choose The Right Time

Even though the best time to watch the aurora is generally between November and March, you can catch a glimpse of it over the Northern Hemisphere as soon as darkness comes in August and keep doing so until April. Be aware that flight prices usually increase over the holiday season due to increased demand (another reason to take a cruise, perhaps).

The shoulder seasons, on the other hand, are the most pleasant and, surprisingly, the least busy. It’s much more comfortable in the autumn, and March is widely considered to have some of the best displays of vivid colour.

Alternately, schedule your trip around one of the many upcoming festivals, such as the jazz, classical, and electronic Northern Lights Festival, which will be held in Tromso from late January to early February, or the Kiruna Snow Festival, which will be held in January and feature the snow blower world championships.

Pack The Right Clothes

Layering is essential in the autumn and winter, when Aurora displays are more frequent. While a bulky coat or puffy jacket might be beneficial, the key to keeping warm is to dress in layers. Keep your toes warm by wearing thick wool socks instead of more breathable materials like cotton or linen.

If you’re unsure how many layers you need, wear two. Keep in mind that if you overdress, you can always shed a layer, but if you underdress, you may find yourself shivering. Accessories like beanies, gloves, scarves, and hand warmers are also recommended.

You don’t want the spectacle ruined by shivering limbs and chattering teeth, now do you?

Know The Myths

Being the modern-day phenomena that they are, the lights were naturally the focus of many stories and legends in the past. The Sámi, the indigenous inhabitants of Lapland, see the lights as a negative omen – if you have insulted them, you could get ill! – but other cultures see them as a symbol of good.

In Finland, the lights were assumed to be sparks from an arctic fox’s tail as it sped over the snow, while Swedish fishermen believed the lights were reflections from vast schools of herring. The Northern Lights were even said to be a reflection off the Valkyrie’s armour as they guided Viking soldiers to Valhalla.

Wow!
