HOW TO PLAN A SUCCESSFUL PARTY FOR ANY OCCASION

0

How do you define a great party? Is it the hangover the next day? The friends you made during it? Or, if you’re the host, is it the fact that things went off without a hitch? For us, it’s definitely the latter.

If you are planning on hosting a party or event in the not-so-distant future, then you’ve probably already wondered how to define the occasion. From themed nights to providing the right entertainment, all the way to arriving at the most appropriate venue and more, these are just some of the ingredients which go into planning an exciting party for an event.

Birthdays, engagements, anniversaries and other milestones…you name it, there really is an event to suit every occasion. Regardless of the cause of celebration, your party can stick in the minds of guests longer than the resulting hangovers, ringing in the ears and food coma. With that in mind, here’s how to plan a successful party for any occasion.

BALLOON DECORATIONS

Let’s cut to the chase; every party needs balloons, and lots of them. Why? Because balloons are fun and seem to signal a certain sense of frivolity is to follow, of course!

Balloons are also an inexpensive decoration and are ideal for a number of occasions; think weddings, anniversaries, baby showers, and, of course, birthdays. Moreover, you can easily decorate the room with these inflatables in no time at all – that is if you have a pump or helium canister (we’ve all been red-faced and out of breath trying to blow up balloons at someone’s birthday party, after all).

Whether you decide to create a stunning arch, weave a bright long garland, or make grotesque columns, here are some of our favourite balloon ideas:

Neon Balloons: Are you going for a rave theme? Then neon balloons are ideal. You can get balloons in neon colours or balloons that react to the light, which create a visually arresting spectacle perfect for this theme.

Having bright neon coloured balloons that glow under UV black light creates just the right aesthetic for raving; use a range of bright neon colours to make the fluorescence really impactful. Bear in mind that while neon balloons are quite inexpensive, a blacklight may set you back a few pennies.

Create a Balloon Chandelier: If you’re looking to add some glamour and the wow factor to your party, creating a balloon chandelier will certainly impress your guests. We love this DIY balloon chandelier from The House That Lars Built, which you can find here.

A mixture of round and long balloons in various colours, simply hang your chandelier from the ceiling above your dining table so they float above your head while you enjoy your party with your friends.

Balloon Garland: Perhaps the easiest and most widely used balloon birthday decor idea; the balloon garland. Choose the shades according to the colour scheme of the party, then tie your balloon garland to the walls, hang it in front of the house entrance, or decorate stair railings to make a lasting impression on your guests.

Balloons With Gifts: Did you know that you can put almost anything in the balloon, that is as long as it fits inside and doesn’t actually pop the balloon? You’ll of course need a high-quality, clear latex balloon for the task, but after that, it’s time to get creative!

PICK A PARTY TYPE

If you want to make your party memorable, before you start to plan and make arrangements, the first thing that you will need to consider is what kind of event you want to throw. A few key decisions and fine tuning will define the feel, ambience and mood of the event, and so much of the success of your party occurs in the planning process.

Once you’ve determined the overarching theme, you can narrow down other options like the food you’ll be serving, the music you’ll be dancing to (if there’ll be dancing, that is) and other specific elements.

Firstly, though, the big questions. Some of the most common types of party include, but are not limited too:

Of course, the party should be appropriate to the cause for celebration. For instance, for a centenarian celebrating their triple digits, it’s not going to be a raucous event hosted in a nightclub, probably. Yep, this is a lot to take in and determine, and sometimes delegating some of the more administerial elements can be a relief.

The experts at House of Party Planning concur, suggesting that ”a party is meant to be about creativity, celebration and a bit of carousing, not stressing about schedules and suppliers”. Don’t be afraid to enlist the help of planners to help you realise your vision.

LOOK FOR THE RIGHT ENTERTAINMENT

For your big event, you will need to have the right entertainment to match the occasion and cause for celebration, otherwise, you risk the event being forgettable. Every party needs an aspect which defines it, from live music acts to firework displays to photo booths and more; that magic element which people get nostalgic over. You want your guests to be asking ’’remember when….?’’ about your event with a smile on their faces.

Yes, these elements can be expensive, and may feel frivolous even, but they represent the magic dust you’ll be sprinkling over the party, so pull no punches here.

CONSIDER A THEMED EVENT

Some people love to be guided, steered and pointed in the direction of fun with a stern hand. Sure, organised fun isn’t for everyone, but more often than not, a themed event brings out the best in people.

Having a pre-arranged theme can pull an event together and allows you to create a backdrop against which you can choreograph the finer details. In many ways, rather than being restrictive, a themed party focuses the mind of both organiser and attendee, eliminating that dreaded ‘paradox of choice’ from the costume and culinary choices, equally.

It could be something as simple as a colour theme, a seasonal salute or one that celebrates a certain cuisine or country; just make it clear and concise and allow your guests to get creative in their interpretation.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT VENUE

The frame is sometimes as important as the picture, as they say, and when you have the right venue for your event, it can ensure the whole affair runs as smoothly as possible. Before embarking on that all important venue search, decide how much input and assistance you want from your venue.

Some locations offer just that, a location, and little else, whilst some are more than happy to provide all kinds of other resources, such as catering services, decoration, music, staging hire….you name it. For some, this level of help is welcome, for others, it leads to the party becoming impersonal. Determining whether you fall in the former or latter camp will help you choose your venue.

KEEP IT A SURPRISE

A magical, exciting element of party hosting which seems to have fallen in popularity in recent years is the ‘surprise party’. For some, that moment when friends and family leap out yelling the magic word evokes a certain amount of dread, but for others, there’s no more romantic notion.

But let’s be honest here, what better way to celebrate a big birthday or an anniversary party than by making it a total surprise? As long as you have the dedication of all guests in keeping their counsel in the days leading up to the event and their punctuality when showing up for the big reveal, this is one of the best ways to host an unforgettable, exciting event.

THE BOTTOM LINE

There are so many considerations, both big and small, which go into organising a successful event. Regardless of the occasion, the magic elements which determine whether a party lives long in the memory or fizzles out before the night is even over are largely the same. We hope yours goes down in history as a success!

How To Get A Good Deal On A Used Car In 2022

Let’s face it, the automotive industry has taken a bit of a battering in the last few years. The economic impact of COVID-19 led to massive production delays, with the current cost of living crisis meaning consumers are now less willing to make major purchases, preferring to wait until the coffers are replenished before taking the plunge.

Accordingly, used car prices skyrocketed in 2021, rising by almost 70%. They are predicted to remain high in 2022, with Auto Express Magazine predicted earlier this year that ‘’used car prices are here to stay’’.

All of which leaves the consumer in something of a pickle; do they spend big now on a brand new vehicle, or do they wait until used car prices fall? For savvy shoppers, there is a third option; finding a good deal on a used car now. Here’s how to do just that…

Budget First

Before you make any large purchase, it’s vital to take both a bird’s eye view and a deep dive of your monthly incomings and outgoings to check if you can make room for it within your budget.

As we all know, times are set to be tough in the coming months, and if you’re going to afford a purchase as important as a new or used car, it’s worth acknowledging that you’re going to belts tightening belts in the coming months.

Your savings goal and budget should be realistic and affordable, whether you’re putting aside a specified sum each month from your incomings to save for your next car, or you’re making room in your budget for the kind of monthly instalments typically associated with used car finance. Speaking of which…

Find The Right Finance Option

If you are choosing to buy a used car on finance, you have a few different options to consider. In short, these are:

  • Personal Contract Hire (PCH), which essentially involves leasing a car for a set period. This suits those who like to change the car they drive fairly regularly.
  • Hire Purchase (HP). This requires a deposit, usually of 10% of the purchase price, and the rest of that price paid in instalments.
  • Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) also involves a deposit, but the instalments you pay are towards the depreciation of the vehicle’s value. When the payment turn ends, you can either return the vehicle to the supplier, take full ownership via a final ‘balloon’ payment, or trade in the vehicle for something different, using any guaranteed future value (GFV) as equity.
  • Personal Loan, which perhaps doesn’t need explaining.

If you’re keen to explore these options in more detail, do check out our tips on finding the best finance option when buying a used car.

Factors Affecting Finance

The finance deal that you’re actually offered, in terms of the annual percentage rate (APR), the monthly payment amount, the deposit required, and various other elements that could affect your perception of whether or not you’ve got a ‘good’ deal, depends on various factors.

These include your proposed deposit contribution, your desired length of loan agreement, and, of course, your credit score. Check out these factors which affect the cost of your car finance to learn more about that.

Shop Around

Now that you’ve considered your budget, explored various finance options, and the factors which influence them, it’s time to shop around. Indeed, it’s worth visiting different car dealerships to get a good overview of car prices. You should also consider private sellers, who may be more open to negotiation and bartering.

If you’re looking to finance a used car, many consumers also don’t know that you could sort your finance first with a finance broker and then get the car you want from any dealership in the UK that is verified by the FCA. With so many different buying options to explore, it’s worth taking your time and not just rushing into the first car that you set eyes on.

Get Ready To Negotiate

For many buyers, negotiation is a scary word. But it shouldn’t be; just remember that the power is in your hands! Negotiations don’t mean you have to try and haggle thousands of pounds off the cost of a vehicle, but you could save a little money if you’re bold enough to just ask.

You could compare the price of the car you like with another local dealership who may be able to get you a better offer. If this is the case, dealers may lower the purchase price or offer you more money for your part exchange to help offset the cost, and keep you from turning your attentions elsewhere.

Part Exchange Your Current Car

Having a car to part exchange can help to get you a better deal on a used car. When you part exchange your car, dealers will evaluate your vehicle and use the cost to offset the price of your next vehicle.

This can also remove the hassle of having to sell your current car and instead you can drop it at the dealer when you pick up your new one. In some cases, though, you may be offered a better deal on your current car if it’s not currently on finance or if you choose to sell to a private buyer.

Do be aware that some dealers factor in the cost of things such as cleaning your vehicle or putting it through an MOT before they resell it, but generally speaking, this shouldn’t affect the money you’re due too much.

Hands-Off Or Hands-On: What’s The Best Way To Manage Employees?

The world of work is as diverse as it is drudgerous, and, accordingly, it comes as no surprise that our workplace leaders adopt a whole host of conflicting management styles, from nightmarish David Brent esque figures all the way to understanding, encouraging mentors who you actually enjoy working for.

Generally speaking, however, and without wishing to be reductive, managers can broadly be categorised as being ‘hands-on’ or ‘hands-off’.

A hands-on manager tends to be directly involved in their team’s projects and works in close proximity to their staff, monitoring progress. A manager who takes a hands-off approach will not be quite as involved in the day-to-day tasks, instead granting their employees a sense of independence and autonomy. Both styles have their advantages and disadvantages, and it’s worth considering these carefully to decide the best approach for your workplace.

Daily Involvement

Managers who work closely with their teams keep their knowledge of their company up-to-date and may gain a greater rapport with their team as they work so closely together. This can help them in planning future projects or decisions in the direction the company should be taking.

It is easy for the hands-off manager to become out of touch, remaining ignorant of what is happening in the workplace and perhaps giving them unrealistic expectations of where the company is headed. As the Harvard Business Review point out, a hands-off boss may have a poor command of the details.

That said, many employees will view a hands-on manager’s nature as overbearing and suffocating, which can sometimes lead to discord and stifle creativity.

Regardless of whether the manager takes a hands-on or hands-off approach, idea management plays a crucial role in fostering creativity and innovation within a team.

Micromanaging

There is a fine line between managerial involvement in a project and micromanaging it, causing resentment among your capable employees. Employees who can manage their own work will gain a range of skills that might otherwise go undeveloped. In fact, many employees will feel more fulfilled and have greater pride in their success if they have a manager with a more hands-off approach.

Whether the hands-off approach will boost performance depends very much on your employees. For motivated employees, it probably will, but for employees who require encouragement and guidance to produce their best work, a hand-off approach may mean that work is of poorer quality.

In some cases, it should be noted that micromanaging may even be considered a form of bullying, by law.

That said, knowing when to micromanage and not can be essential in the overall management of the employees. Generally, there are certain instances wherein micromanaging proves to be beneficial. For example, when there’s a problem employee, a hands-on manager must ensure the concerned employee will not continue with their offensive behaviour.

Also, micromanagement can be an excellent approach when the company starts new ventures or processes, deals with some financial and legal issues, does high-risk activities, and makes significant changes.

By knowing all these things, a manager can figure out the best way to manage the employees and bring out the best in them. Whether it should be hands-on or hands-off depends on certain circumstances.

Identifying Problems

In the majority of workplaces, an involved manager can nip problems in the bud, not allowing them to develop into a serious matter – an opportunity that the hands-off manager may miss. A hands-on manager may be able to quickly spot if a particular employee is not delivering their accustomed standard, allowing you to offer support with training or mentoring. For some genuinely interesting insights into handling workplace challenges, check out these counselling articles, by the way.

Personal problems can spill into the workplace, and a hands-on manager may be able to help. However, it may also lead to an employee feeling picked on if a manager is too persistent.

In cases of particular sensitivity, such as substance abuse, for instance, a hands-off manager may be more approachable, as they won’t have developed quite the same intimacy with their staff. Such distance is often required to deal with personal, private issues with the appropriate level of compassion.

Dealing with issues surrounding substance abuse discreetly is imperative, and may be more aptly handled by a more hands-off manager. Though in some professions, such as those involving transport and energy generation, the use of drug testing is more common, it is generally considered unethical and intrusive in most workplaces. Instead, a softer touch is almost always preferable.

Instead, as the Trades Union Congress advise, managers of all types should seek to negotiate a transparent and comprehensive drugs and alcohol policy that addresses issues in a fair, open way. They go on to say that ‘’In some workplaces, some form of drug testing can have a part to play in that, but they should never be the first line of protection.’’

Other forms of particularly invasive monitoring of employees, such as secretly recording staff meetings, may fall foul of the law, and in recent years, have been accepted by the Employment Appeals Tribunal as a form of bullying.

Rewards & Discipline

Managers who work closely with their teams may build close working relationships or even friendships, for better or for worse. That may make it hard to be impartial when, for example, considering which of your team is deserving of promotion. It may also make managers reluctant to take disciplinary action if this is required. A hands-off manager will find it far easier to maintain a professional distance, allowing them to make these decisions impartially.

Since they presume they’ve hired the right people for the company, they let them work independently with minimal supervision. In that case, rewarding hardworking employees – whether that’s with a simple praise, s bonus or something more immediately tangible like gift cards for Uber Eats, Apple Music or Amazon – and imposing disciplinary actions on the erring ones won’t be an issue for them and the organisation.

Consequently, a hands-off manager can ensure equality and diversity in the workforce. However, the organisation deals with equality and diversity issues.

In that case, a diversity and inclusion training course for the employees can be a great way to create an inclusive workplace and collaborate in a diverse environment. This training course can help managers identify biases that have a negative impact on the employees and the organisation as a whole.

The Bottom Line

Accordingly, it could be argued that there is no one-size-fits-all managerial style, and ultimately, it’s up to managers to decide whether closely supervising their team will be a help or a hindrance.

From True Crime to Kanye: Our Favourite Documentaries On Netflix Right Now

If you’re of a nervous or startled disposition, perhaps it’s best you manoeuvre that cursor to the back button now. But if you’re looking to take a vicarious look into crime investigations, the careers of the 21st century’s great musical icons, or even luxuriate in the natural world for a little while, then you’ve come to the right place.

Although drama still dominates Netflix’s most watched shows, with Squid Game topping the charts and Bridgerton and Money Heist second and third respectively, documentaries on Netflix have come a long way since the streaming platform’s launch in 1997.

Now, in 2022, these deep dives are extensive, meticulous, terrifying and entertaining in equal measure, but with the list of Netflix documentaries ever expanding and the paradox of choice often paralysing, it can sometimes be hard to hone in on a single show to spend your evening with.

Here’s the good news, we’ve done the hard work for you, and sat through hundreds of hours of TV (it’s a tough life) to arrive here; our favourite documentaries on Netflix right now.

Jeen-Yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy

Kanye West needs little introduction, being, that he is, one of the most famous people on the planet. You’re probably wondering, then, why we really need a three-part, four and a half hour documentary on the legendary, though often divisive, rapper and producer?

Jeen-Yuhs seems to answer that rhetorical question with an affirmative, life-affirming exploration of Kanye’s (yep, he’s that famous; we use his first name) childhood, formative years, ascent, and some of the controversies that have surrounded him since.

Even those entering the documentary as non-fans, or even critics, of Kanye will find his charisma in those early years impossible to resist, and with behind-the-scenes footage of his dogged come-up, as well as studio recordings of the making of some of his best known tracks, Jeen-Yuhs really is an immersive, incredible watch.

NetFlix

Memories Of A Murderer: The Nilsen Tapes

Though the ethics of true crime documentaries are questionable, there’s no denying how popular they continue to be. In fact, the genre is by far and away the most ‘’in-demand documentary subgenre’’ in the US, according to The Ringer

True Crime’s popularity in the UK shows no signs of abating either, and one of the more striking documentaries of the genre currently on the Netflix is actually based on a notorious murderer who committed his crimes in Soho, London; Dennis Nilsen.

One of the most terrifying cases of murder committed by one of the worst criminals Britain has ever encountered, Memories Of A Murderer follows the actual accounts given by Nilsen, exploring the harrowing details of how he captured, killed, and disposed of his victims.

Not for the faint-hearted, we realise, and even if true crime is your thing, you may find this one visceral and, ultimately, shocking.

NetFlix

Life In Colour With David Attenborough

What self-respecting writer in the UK could discuss documentaries without a nod to national treasure David Attenborough?

The beloved biologist and broadcaster’s Life In Colour is only three episodes long, but it’s that brevity which is so effective here, with each episode drilling down into the extraordinary ways in which animals use colour in their battles with enemies, to win a mate, to keep hidden but to make a massive show of themselves, too.

Of course, this is one to watch on a wide screen in glorious 4K UHD, with the footage so striking and vibrant you’ll wonder what your partner has put in your tea. Both Netflix and iPlayer (which the series is also available on) possess this ultra high definition capability, but rest assured, even if you don’t have access to this streaming service, Life In Colour is regularly shown on terrestrial TV, too. All you need for that is a TV aerial; click here to learn more about your options for installation.

Netflix

Miss Americana

One of the best documentaries on Netflix (or, we might argue, anywhere), is Miss Americana, which follows the singer and songwriter Taylor Swift, a worldwide sensation since her debut album some 16 years ago.

The documentary reveals the intimate and candid moments of Taylor’s story so far, which are fascinating, but perhaps more importantly, it explores the notion of being a ‘good girl’ that is so heavily imposed on some female artists in the States and how it can impact their life.

As such, the documentary serves as a useful critique of the music industry and its adjacent media. A particularly telling aspect of the documentary sees Taylor discussing her criticism in the media for writing songs about bad dating experiences, rather than the media criticising the men who caused these experiences.

Miss Americana, therefore, explores a lot more than what it’s like being a pop star- it explores what it’s like being a woman, in a surprisingly candid way.

Netflix

Bo Burnham: Inside

Is it a musical? Is it a comedy special? Is it a documentary about the process of creating ‘content’? Is it a documentary about the making of a documentary?

Does it matter? Because whatever genre Bo Burnham: Inside falls under, it’s one of the most compelling, hilarious and thought-provoking pieces of ‘art’ produced in recent years, and certainly one of the most effective at capturing the curious, crazy state of limbo and liminality that we all experienced during the pandemic.

As such, although the ‘documentary’ only focuses on one man, it has an apt sense of communion about it, and of all the shows on our list, it is the one we’d most implore you to watch.

The Vanishing At Cecil Hotel

We wouldn’t be surprised if you’d heard about the Los Angeles hotel in this documentary before – it’s been a part of previous documentaries and is the stuff of mystery and conspiracy in various corners of the internet.

One such mystery is the disappearance at the hotel of Canadian student Elisa Lam, who was tragically found dead 19 days after she was first reported missing. This documentary provides answers to some of the questions surrounding the case, in parts attempting to clarify and debunk the more scurrilous, erroneous theories presented by other docs about the disappearance.

Accordingly, whilst it is certainly a true crime documentary, The Vanishing At Cecil Hotel also takes an interesting look at the spread of conspiracy theories online, setting it apart from some of the more gratuitous documentaries in the genre.

5 Natural Sleep Tips You Need To Know About

Sleep is fundamental to our health and wellness, no doubt about it. But a lack of sleep runs much, much deeper than simply feeling tired the next day; it can impact every aspect of ourhealth and wellbeing, from impacting the immune system to a greater chance of developing depression and anxiety, pain problems, and an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers.

Puressentiel tell us that, in their research on sleep, 83% of us have suffered from sleep issues at some point in our lives, with most of us knowing exactly how it feels not to be firing on all cylinders. How we envy that remaining 17%!

The immediate effects are felt by most, with three-quarters saying sleepless nights make it difficult to deal with daily life and half saying they are grumpy following missing those all important 7 to 9 hours of Zzzeds.

It’s important to remember that it’s not only about the length of sleep. The quality of sleep is crucial, too. This is because during the deepest part of the sleep cycle, known as Rapid Eye Movement (or REM) sleep, the body works to repair and nourish itself.

We also have to remember the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated ‘coronasomnia’, together with other worries like the rise in the cost of living and geopolitical crises, has led to major changes in sleep patterns for all of us.

But what can we do to maximize our chances of getting a good night’s sleep? Dr Nisa Aslam from Puressentiel shares her top tips with us.

Don’t Force It

This is a strange period we are living through, and you may experience a slight (and that’s putting things mildly) alteration to your sleep as a consequence. And we all know that the more we tell ourselves to sleep, the more it doesn’t seem to happen.

If you have been lying in bed for a while, staring up at the ceiling and looking for answers to existential questions, don’t force sleep. Get up, get some water and distract yourself by doing something relaxing like reading, then try again.

Nature’s Answers

We might all need a little help getting to sleep as we live with the Covid pandemic as well as other worries, either in terms of our sleeping patterns or our ability to easily switch off and fall asleep.

Lavender has been used as a sleep aid for centuries, and it is acknowledged as a soporific and relaxant by both the European Medicines Agency and the World Health Organisation. Consider a sleep spray of lavender essential oil, spritzed on your pillow before bed, or even a herbal tea in the lead up to hitting the hay, featuring lavender and chamomile, which is also said to have relaxing, sleep-positive properties.

Others may choose to use melatonin sleeping gummies, though it should be noted that the science behind them is still being investigated, and conclusions are yet to be fully reached.

Exercise

There’s no better way to help with relaxation and stress than some exercise. When we exercise, we release so-called ‘happy’ hormones like endorphins, dopamine and serotonin, which boosts our mood, puts more pep in our step, and reduces stress, too.

We also expend energy which will help us feel naturally tired and ready for sleep. Exercising also gives our mind some time to work through things, get some fresh air, and gain some new perspective, which will help temper any worries we might be feeling and promote better sleep. Result!

Make Time To Relax

The day can be full-on, and even if it is manageable, your mind might still be working overtime, over night. Make sure you put aside some time for yourself each day, even if it’s a couple of hours in the evening, as you owe your sleep quality the preceding downtime to prepare yourself properly for a night of quality Zzzeds.

Having a well thought out bedtime routine in place can be crucial in promoting better quality sleep, too. Check out our top tips on that here.

Clear Your Mind

When your mind is full of thought, worry, and stress, you will find it impossible to get back to sleep. Try doing some calming meditation before you go to sleep – there are some great mindfulness apps out there that will help guide you in your journey to a clear mind. Many boast features specifically tailored to helping you get in the right frame of mind for sleep.

7 WAYS TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR COMPOSITE DECKING THIS SUMMER

This just in; with summer just around the corner, people are discovering the delights of decking in their droves, with CNBC reporting that “demand for composite decking is rising thanks to a DIY boon”.

It seems that this increased interest in composite decking, in particular, could be linked to its durability – it tends to last much longer than standard wood decking and therefore, doesn’t cause the same strain on the environment. What’s more, the materials used in composite decking tend to be primarily sourced from recycled materials, furthering its green credentials.

Yep, high-performance composite plastic decking could represent a sustainable, eco-friendly alternative to wood decking, and if you’ve recently installed some and are wondering how to get it summer ready, then you’ve come to the right place. Here are 7 ways to make the most of your composite decking this summer.

ADD A HERB CONTAINER GARDEN

While we adore a designated decking area, often you have to sacrifice part of your lawn and flower beds to make room for one. The danger here is that, in doing so, you sacrifice some of the natural, organic feel of your garden in the process.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Adding planters or herb container gardens to your deck can bring an extra dimension to the architecture of your garden, dressing it up by adding height and colour and restoring that sense of a wild, growing space.

We love the idea of creating a herb container on your decking. Cooking with fresh herbs grown in your garden will transform your summer barbecues no end as they have an amazing ability to enhance dishes, transforming a cheap cut of BBQ meat into something special and adding a new dimension to summer salads. Being able to walk over to your decking to pluck some fresh for dinner? That sounds pretty luxurious to us.

ZONE WITH AN ALL WEATHER RUG

Rugs and composite decking go together like that tea and cake so often served to guests at a garden party. Not only do they add some personality to the decking, but they also introduce texture and create an inviting space which feels ‘zoned’ off from the rest of the garden.

Go further and consider using a rug to zone your decking into separate spaces, and while you’re at it, consider framing your garden furniture with an outdoor rug, highlighting areas you want to become a focal point.

That said, some caution does need to be exercised here. As the guys at G&B Quality Cedar Products point out, you’ll want to make sure you move around both your garden furniture and your outdoor rug. This is because doing so ”can prevent color patches that occur naturally from harsh UV rays.”

They go on to warn that ”Color patches can also occur from water sitting underneath furniture, planters, or mats.” A regular, steadfast and studious moving of decking features is the best way to prevent this.

HEAT IT UP

While the most eco-friendly way to stay warm is to put on another jumper and layer up, if you want to make the most of your garden as a pleasant summer afternoon turns into a chillier evening, then turning to another source of heat is a viable, comfortable alternative.

It’s possible to build a fire pit on your composite decking, but check with the guidelines set by your decking manufacturer; you wouldn’t want to scorch the surface of your decking or, worse, cause a fire. Better to prolong those summer garden soirees with an electric heater instead.

DON’T FORGET AWNING

You’re on your deck. It’s a beautiful summer’s day. The only problem is, you can’t make full use of your deck space because it’s just too hot out there. Or, it’s chucking it down with rain…hey, we know how unpredictable our summers can be, right?

An awning would certainly make a difference. Having one could lower the temperature by several degrees, allowing you to enjoy the afternoon outdoors in the shade. Or, it could provide shelter from a sudden storm.

OR, BUILD A PERGOLA

Pergolas can turn an exposed deck into an intimate space while still feeling open and inclusive, and are especially ideal if you have nosy neighbours! The slats shield the sun during the hottest part of the day, but still allow enough rays through to give your decking that sunkissed, sociable vibe.

ADD A WINDSHIELD

Yep, as we already mentioned, with an English summer, you never quite know what the weather’s going to be like. That’s okay, we just love talking about it!

Britain can even experience pretty strong winds during the summer months. As such, creating a sheltered area with a glass balustrade around your decking is a wise move. In doing so, you’ll protect you and yours from blustery winds, turning an otherwise unusable space into a cosy one.

Glass balustrades also allow you to maintain something of a view from your garden, rather than an unsightly wall or fence which may make your patio feel ‘hemmed in’. As the guys at NE & C, suppliers of glass balconies and glass balustrades in the North East, tell us, these simple structures ”provide a safety barrier and wind-shield without interrupting your view”. We’re sold!

ADD A BEVERAGE STATION

You don’t need to build a full on outdoor bar on your decking to make the most of the space in summer, but we think every outdoor deck should have a beverage station – they add some fun and implore those nearby to let the sociable, good times begin!

This could be as simple as a drinks trolley or basic wooden structure supporting a few choice pitchers, allowing everyone to help themselves. Simply load your beverage station with bottles, mixers and glasses and you’re all set for an exuberant time filled with lively conversation.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Treat your composite decking just like you would your living room, ramping up the comfort levels and designating separate spaces for different activities. In doing so, you’ll enjoy a magnificently sociable summer without even having to leave your garden!

Why Everyone Should Learn A Second Language

Aside from our worship of a cuppa and our dedication to the art of queuing, a shameful monolingualism is perhaps the most prevailing stereotype associated with being British.

Indeed, language learning has always represented something of a hurdle for us Brits, comprende? Perhaps it’s complacency, as we work on the assumption that everyone, everywhere will have a grasp of English. Or, maybe it’s that language learning isn’t imbued with the utmost importance at school. Or, is it just our love of gesturing and pointing that holds us back?

Joking aside (the famed British humour in full force, there), it seems that us Brits are condemning ourselves to leading rather inward lives, with the rich tapestry of experience just an evening class of Italian away.

The facts don’t lie; as the Conversation reports, “a recent survey co-ordinated by the European Commission found that 80% of European 15-30 year olds can read and write in at least one foreign language. This number drops to only 32% amongst British 15-30 year olds”.

Perhaps you know where we’re going with this one…

Did you know that learning a new language has many benefits? In addition to gaining fluency in another tongue, you can also expect to see improvements in your cognitive abilities, job prospects, and cultural awareness. And who wouldn’t want that?

So, if you’re looking for a way to improve your life in myriad, unexpected ways, here’s why everyone should learn a second language.

Job Prospects

“To acquire another language is to open yourself up to the world and to increase vastly your employability”, pitched the Guardian back in 2012, and not much has changed since then (even though so much around us has).

We couldn’t agree more. Indeed, in today’s global economy, being bilingual or multilingual is a valuable skill that can give you a competitive edge in the job market. Increasingly, employers are looking for candidates who can communicate effectively with customers and clients from different cultures, so if you’re looking to improve your job prospects, learning a new language is a great way to do it.

No matter what industry you’re in, being able to speak another language can be a valuable asset. For instance, if you’re in the medical field and work in America, being able to communicate with Spanish-speaking patients can be extremely helpful. Or, if you’re in the customer service industry, being able to serve customers in their native language can lead to better satisfaction rates.

For those in specialised fields, such as accounting, mastering the terminology can be particularly beneficial. Specialised language can help you navigate international financial regulations, communicate effectively with global clients, and enhance your professional credibility. You can learn English for accounting on this page or on similarly subject-specific platforms. There are also plenty of free language learning platforms available.

Additionally, being able to speak another language can also open up opportunities to work abroad. If you’re interested in working in a foreign country, learning the local language will make it much easier to find a job and adjust to life in your new home. Immersion is the most effective language learning technique, helping learners develop their speaking and comprehension skills, in particular, much quicker than when you learn a second language remotely or via an app.

Improved Cognitive Abilities

Studies have shown that learning a new language can improve your cognitive abilities, too, with bilingualism linked with improved executive function skills, such as multitasking, problem-solving, creativity, and decision-making, in particular.

In addition, many experts believe that being bilingual can help delay the onset of dementia and other age-related cognitive declines. So, if you’re looking for a way to boost your brainpower, learning a second language is a great option.

But that’s not all; being bilingual has also been associated with a greater sense of empathy and a broader global mindset. Which brings us to…

Greater Cultural Awareness

Learning a new language can also help you become more culturally aware. By understanding another culture’s language, you can gain a better understanding of their customs and values, which are often inextricably linked. This can help you become more tolerant and open-minded, and appreciate the beauty of diversity.

A particularly interesting school of thought on the subject is the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, which suggests that the very structure of different languages can influence their speaker’s thoughts and actions. By learning a second language intricately, it could be said that you gain an extra insight into the culture who speaks it.

Fascinating stuff, indeed.

Improved Communication Skills

Learning a new language can also help you improve your communication skills, both in the language you’re learning and in your mother tongue. This is because you’ll need to learn how to express yourself in a different way, using different words and grammatical rules. As a result, you’ll become more articulate and better able to communicate your thoughts and ideas, considering more carefully both the structure and the meaning in everything you say.

As the Oxford University Press reports, when we’re learning a second language, ‘’we start to focus on the mechanics of a second language: grammar, conjugations and sentence structure, our awareness of our L1 improves. These transferable skills give bilingual students a greater insight into their mother tongue, thus making them more effective communicators as well as better writers.’’

Improved Mental Health

Finally, learning a new language can also lead to improved mental health, with bilingualism linked to reduced stress levels in children and increased psychological well-being in later life, too.

Additionally, as we mentioned earlier, many experts believe that being bilingual can help delay the onset of dementia and other age-related cognitive declines. Incredibly, it was reported by CNN in 2020 that ‘’bilinguals are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease four to five years later than their monolingual counterparts’’, and these positive effects on the brain and mental health are only more emphasised the longer you’ve been bilingual. Best get learning that second language today!

The Bottom Line

There are so many benefits to learning an additional language. Doing so can enhance your travel experience and broaden your mind – not to mention, it’s an impressive skill to have and one that is valued by employers.

Countless studies have suggested that learning a new language can improve cognition, memory and multitasking ability, as well as improving your career prospects and social skills.

It’s never too late to start, so why not head over to our article on tips for learning a new language fast online and begin on your journey to bilingual fluency today!

The Key Impacts Of The Pandemic On Interior Design

And ideal ways to ‘reset’ your home in 2022.

Let’s put things mildly, here; the pandemic has most certainly changed the way we interact with our domestic spaces.

Before ‘COVID’, ‘lockdown’ and ‘social distancing’ entered the popular vernacular forever, our homes were spaces primarily reserved for domesticity, whether that took the form of Saturdays spent watching Strictly as a family, roast dinners shared on a Sunday, or fleeting moments during the week where housemates crossed paths in the hallway.

The pandemic, as we’re sure you don’t need reminding, changed all that. In the time it took ‘Boris’ to fumble his way through a press conference, our homes had been transformed into places of work, play, school, exercise, and everything in between.

And whilst the pandemic certainly isn’t over, with the UK now returning to some semblance of normality, homeowners and renters alike are looking to ‘reset’ the way in which they approach their domestic living arrangements.

Should you be keen to do the same, then today we’re exploring the the key impacts of the pandemic on interior design, and how to ‘reset’ your home in 2022.

Home Offices

One of the biggest changes in interior design that has come with the pandemic is the increase in home offices, and the subsequent space-shuffling and room-juggling to make room for them.

Working from home became mandatory during the pandemic and home offices a necessity, however hastily arranged or fully-formed they appeared. And however much much of the UK’s press is desperate to encourage us back to our central office spaces, it does look like home offices are here to stay; it was recently reported that commuter numbers are still almost a quarter down on figures in February 2022, before the COVID-19 crisis took hold of the country.

Now that it’s been established that you’re in this thing for the long haul, it might be best to fold away that makeshift desk made from an ironing board, and dedicate a proper space to your #WFH endeavours.

Even if you can’t devote a whole room to a home office, it’s possible to ‘zone’ a corner of the house to ensure you have proper peace and quiet during the day, free from distraction (that’ll teach those tedious columnists casting aspersions on the productivity of remote workers).

Since you’re looking to make things more permanent, you’ll also want to make sure your home-office setup is ergonomically sound, and not causing you posture problems, tech-neck or any other physical issues associated with the temporary working arrangements brought on by the pandemic.

At the very least, you’ll want to invest in a chair with lumbar support and a headrest, a screen with an adjustable monitor, and a mouse with wrist support.

Some choose to go further, devoting a second screen to work that’s positioned higher than eye level, to ensure they’re able to deploy the 20-20-20 rule to prevent digital eye strain. This is, quite honestly, a job best carried out by professionals; click here to learn more about getting your TV or computer screen wall mounted.

Biophilic Design

It’s no surprise that establishing a connection to nature became so important during the pandemic, with lockdowns leading to extended periods at home, peering out the window at nature doing its thing.

Indeed, the pandemic saw many Brits develop green fingers, with spending on gardening rising significantly as the crisis wore on. Many more (particularly those without gardens) adopted a ‘bring the outside in’ approach to their interior design styles.

This has led to more people introducing biophilic design to their domestic spaces in 2022, making plants a part of their everyday life (and the furniture!).

By focusing on our relationship with nature, it’s been posited that biophilic design could even improve our wellbeing and expedite healing, enhance creativity and improve clarity of thought…and who doesn’t want that?

This trend towards biophilic design also promotes sustainability, seasonality and the protection of the environment, rather than simply encouraging you to buy as many houseplants as you can carry home with you.

Instead, try buying furniture and décor second hand, or upcycle and reuse old furniture to continue the ideals of biophilia, as well as enhancing natural light and ventilation at home, another key cornerstone of biophilic design.

Living walls, repainting colours and patterns, and, of course, houseplants all help increase the harmony with your home and the natural world, and this is a wonderful way to continue this very welcome interior design trend into 2022 and beyond.

Windows And Skylights

Speaking of allowing more natural light into your home….

With people spending most of their days indoors during the pandemic, the importance of larger windows and increased sunlight was felt keenly, but sometimes difficult to realise, as major renovation projects were largely put on hold.

Now that we’re able to welcome construction workers into our home safely again, it’s predicted that interest in skylight installation and the introduction of larger windows are both set to increase in the UK.

Consider a floor to ceiling window if you can get them south or west facing. However, if your windows are north or east facing, it is better to get skylights and make the most of the overhead sunlight and heat.

If you can’t easily increase the size of your windows or add skylights, there are other more affordable ways to encourage the flow of more natural light in your home. Read some useful tips on doing just that here.

Broken Floor Plans

Before the pandemic, open floor plans were the big thing in interior design, and we couldn’t get enough of them. However, people’s priorities changed seemingly irrevocably during the pandemic, and it no longer feels feasible to have the office and the kitchen sharing space (and sounds, and smells…) when you are spending a full workday, 5 days a week here.

Privacy and dedicated spaces for different activities have led to the rise in the popularity of broken floor plans, with the intimacy and privacy offered by compartmentalising spaces becoming something of a necessity.

Indeed, according to 2020’s John Lewis Flexible Home Living Report, open plan rooms and their associated communal living spaces fell out of fashion during the pandemic, with families keen to create separate zones for home working, study and exercise.

As we look forward to a post-pandemic world of domestic living, it’s likely that more temporary solutions to the push/pull of open-plan living and shared spaces are going to be needed.

One such solution is privacy screens. Foldable and temporary, and placed strategically throughout your open plan living space, these screens can help separate different areas of the same room, with their impermanence an asset when you’re keen to return to that sociable expansive space everyone used to covet so keenly.

These screens usually fold up to be just under the width and height of an average doorway, making them easy to store when you need to use the whole space together. You can even use them outside to give you privacy from your neighbours. Job done.

If you’re keen to ensure your domestic space is one that promotes wellbeing, then check out these interior design tips to help reduce stress. You won’t regret it!

How To Start Afresh In 2022 Without Abandoning Everything

Do you ever wish you could press the pause button on life and move on to the next chapter without fallout or follow-up?

With each and every life full of responsibility, both everyday and esoteric, such an about-turn can be hard to conceptualise, and even harder to pull off. But the good news is that you don’t have to make a complete 180 and reinvent yourself every time you want to make a change.

Doing so would be exhausting, and, let’s face it, both financially and emotionally unviable. Instead, you can embrace that ‘clean slate’, starting-afresh feeling this year without having to abandon everything you hold dear. Here’s how…

Learn A Skill Fit For A Career Shift

If you feel stuck in a rut career-wise or are hoping to find a job that’s more fulfilling or, let’s face it, lucrative, then pursuing additional education is one way to make yourself more competitive in various career fields.

The UK government seems to have second-guessed this growing sense of dissatisfaction in the country, and announced their Skills Bootcamps, which offer free, flexible courses in a variety of modern fields to adults aged 19 and over.

Of course, this is just one form of accessible education currently available to those considering a career change. Whether you want to become a chef or a coder, recruitment platform Reed offers an extensive list of free courses to help those keen on professional development learn new skills, and the Open University has a huge catalogue of free courses, too.

Cultivate A Meaningful Social Circle

Most of us have heard the adage that “you are only as good as the company you keep,” and broadening your horizons to include interesting and inspiring people may be the fresh motivation and sense of progression in your life that you’ve been looking for.

Do not be afraid to cut off people in your life who are clearly holding you back or pulling you down, and having an adverse effect on your mental health.

If you find it hard to make new friends, then firstly, rest assured that there are so many in the same boat. Going to a class or trying out a new hobby (hey, you might even meet someone on your Skills Bootcamp) is a great way to meet new people, whether you want to try your hand at yoga, go on a cooking course or express yourself at an art or craft club. And even if you don’t click with anyone, you’ll have learned a new skill or discovered a new favourite pastime!

Alternatively, there are apps out there which use similar algorithms and interfaces as dating apps, but which are pitched at facilitating purely platonic connections.

Bumble BFF is a way of expanding your social circle via swiping; there’s a photo, a brief bio, and the chance to match with likeminded people, have a chat, and establish a connection. Other similar apps which help match lonely folk seeking platonic fun include Huggle, Whistle and Patook.

Similarly, but in a less commodified way, Befriending Networks exist across the country, connecting those who are feeling isolated and alone with kind-hearted folk who are always up for a chat. You can find a Befriender here

Declutter

If you need an all-consuming fresh start but the idea of packing up and moving house is too daunting, then a simple declutter can give that similar sense of a new home, without the stress and costs of moving!

We exaggerate, of course, but a good clearout can feel truly liberating. Research even suggests that decluttering may relieve stress, and help you feel calmer and more in control.

In fact, in one study reported by WebMd, ‘’women who described their homes with positive language had a lower level of the stress hormone cortisol than women who described their homes as cluttered or unfinished.‘’

Of course, for larger pieces around the home that you’ve grown tired of, you may need professional assistance in your wholesale decluttering campaign. As Darvills, who offer removals in Leeds tell us, storage units can help. They say that such a solution is ‘’suitable for a huge range of items, from furniture and antiques to clothes, toys, and even confidential documents’’.  Phew, we were wondering where our comedy-sized teddy bear that we won at the fair was going to go…

Cultivate A Fresh Outlook

The biggest and most impactful upheaval we can make isn’t arguably physical, domestic or career-based. But rather, it occurs in the mind.

One of the best ways to start afresh without abandoning everything, then, is to develop an attitude of gratitude in 2022. Though last year had us feeling pretty bleak and world-weary, taking a step back and realising what we were grateful for helped put things in perspective. Next year and to embrace those fresh starts, why not make practising gratitude part of your everyday routine?

Many happy, content people swear by the keeping of a gratitude diary, in which they list 3 things they’re grateful for each day. Doing so has been said to rewire your brain to be more optimistic; and we could all do with a bit of that next year, right?

10 Ideal Tips For Triumphant Barbeques At Home This Bank Holiday

Us Brits love a bank holiday barbie and with this glorious weather we’re having, it’s time to dust the cobwebs off your grill, crack open some beers and get cooking. Though we can’t prepare your marinades and coal for you, we have prepared these tips on how to elevate the humble barbeque into something exciting and delicious. Here’s 10 IDEAL tips for triumphant barbeques at home this Bank Holiday.

INGREDIENTS ARE KING

If you buy a cheap sausage and a dusty bun, don’t expect fireworks of flavour. Take the time to go to a local butchers, buy a really nice cut which is suited well to grilling (your butcher will be happy to point you in the right direction) and less really is more. The ingredients will sing and you’ll waste less time and money on elaborate dips, salsas, salads and anything else needed to cover up the taste of lousy meat.

Read: 5 IDEAL tips for storing meat properly

MARINATE

If you wish to permeate the middle of a thick joint of meat, or tenderise a tougher cut, marinating is essential. Kick this off a day early for best results, but be careful with more delicate meats – acidic marinades will start to cook them, salty ones will cure them. It’s advisable to boil off the alcohol if using wine to marinate  – the flavor of raw alcohol brings nothing positive.

GAS DOESN’T CUT IT

Choosing the right vehicle for cooking is vital. Gas, whilst being easier to moderate, doesn’t impart the essence of the barbeque into your flavours. The whole purpose is to taste smoke and char – it’s primitive and unpredictable and that’s the fun!

Natural fire lighters are preferable as chemical varieties impart an unwelcome aroma to the food. If you’re feeling adventurous, flavoured wood chips – such as hickory – add real sparkle and intrigue to the final product.  That said, if you’re choosing a portable one for camping, natural gas and propane grills are a lot easier to transport.

TEMPER

Once you’ve opted for coal it’s important to understand the basics of temperature control. The first thing is to let the coals get really hot – white hot – before commencing. From there, a number of small tricks help you raise and lower the heat according to necessity.

If using a lid, open vents will promote greater heat and closed will lead to cooling. Even more basic, toying with the height of your grill will moderate temperature. Tactical positioning of coals, for instance all forced to one side, will also give greater scope for heat variance.

A light spray of water from a bottle will dampen excitable flames.

SEASON PROGRESSIVELY

Seasoning at the start of the cooking process and the end have very different effects, so pay really close attention to this aspect. Never, ever use a spoon for salt, simply use your fingers – you’ll have far more control and awareness of how much you’re using. To give depth of flavour, season early. When the meat comes off the barbie, a few flakes of rock salt will give a different, delicious finish.

GLAZE

Glazing during the cooking process – usually a sweet mixture applied with a brush – encourages caramelisation of meat. Chefs are always looking for the elusive Maillard reaction, which gives browned food its distinctive flavour, and glazing is a good way to achieve this.

Honey based glazes with touches of sourness and zest from citrus work brilliantly with pork and poultry.

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE MEAT

Charred, smoky notes suit vegetables really, really well. There’s nothing better than seeing a few black lines scorched across a courgette. Equally, some firmer cheeses, like halloumi, hold up very well to flames and are ever popular if you’re having vegetarians round. Lightly blanching veg, shocking it in ice water and then finishing it on the grill works every time.

A few ideas for amazing veg on the barbeque….

  • Lightly blanche some asparagus spears then shock in iced water. Brush them with olive oil then grill until lightly charred. Serve with a poached egg. Delicious simplicity.
  • Make a few incisions into an aubergine and insert small slivers of garlic. Wrap in foil and place in amongst the coals. After roughly an hour, take the out the now smoked aubergine and cut in half. Scoop out the middle and mix with a little greek yoghurt, some dill and a touch of toasted cumin. Crush with a fork to make a wonderful puree.
  • Heat up a pan with olive oil a few centimetres deep. Quarter a bulb of fennel, and cut a small triangle out of the core where it appears pithy and and tough. Confit the fennel in the oil on a low heat for around 45 minutes, making sure it maintains its structure. Finish over the barbeque until lightly caramelised. So good.

PAIR THOUGHTFULLY

Once you’ve got your good-quality meat, don’t just chuck it with the same old stuff. Different meats are elevated by different vegetables, herbs and so on.

For example, the aubergine puree above, as well as rosemary, pairs wonderfully with lamb. The fennel works with grilled fish, tomatoes and rocket.

Try to be seasonal and use ingredients when they’re at their peak. This handy guide should help.

INVEST IN A THERMOMETER

You won’t know if a big rib of beef, for instance, is done by looking at, smelling or prodding it. Meat thermometers are cheap and allow for precision cooking.

REST

When heat touches meat, all the delicious juices that give amazing flavour and texture hurry to the middle of the cut to hide. After cooking, meat needs an ample amount of time to rest so the juices can re-disperse outward. It’s heartbreaking when you cut into your carefully cooked cut and blood runs everywhere – you know it’ll be dry and tasteless. Rest well for perfection.

What Are The Biggest Fashion Faux Pas At UK Weddings?

Weddings are, arguably, the defining event of each and every calendar year. As expected of occasions of such momentousness and gravity, there are rules, spoken and unspoken, to follow. Failure to do that could make you appear as the odd one out and probably become a one-day social outcast. At least before someone disgraces themselves in a more conventional way, that is…

Although the pandemic caused a drop in weddings, this year they are well and truly back, with 2.5 million predicted for 2022 in the US, and big numbers expected in the UK for the second half of the year, too.

Whilst some weddings show reverence to a particular heritage and culture, others follow a more expansive, all-encompassing tradition. Either way, if you’re wondering what the biggest fashion faux pas for UK weddings are, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s find out…

Never Match The Bridal Party

These days, it is fairly standard procedure for wedding invitations to specify dress codes and even colour themes. However, if the invitation doesn’t include such information, it’s not a bad idea to find out more about the shades and styles the bridal party will be in. This will allow you to avoid the same colours that they’ll be wearing, as a matter of caution.

If you don’t want to pry too much, you can use other clues. For example, in many situations, the invitation card gives away a lot of information. It’s not a rule cast in stone that the invitation card should match the wedding colours of the bridal party, but it often does. The last thing you want to do is look like the bridal party when you’re just a humble wedding guest, as this is considered, if not a fashion faux pas per se, a little bit awkward, at the least.

Of course, rather than looking for clues in the invitation or trying to interpret a rather vague invitation instruction, it might just be worth asking the bride or groom!

Ignoring The Specified Dress Code

Before you plan your outfit, you’ll need to check the formality of the event and see if there’s a specified, strict dress code. Is there a mention of cocktail attire or black tie on the wedding invitation? Have they specified a colour scheme? Is the dress code unwritten but obvious?

Weddings are usually formal affairs, but if they aren’t, the invitation will specify what sort of attire is expected (business casual, hippy chic, or everyone-in-shorts, for example). Always follow the instructions on the invitation and don’t bend the rules too much with your outfit.

If your invitation indicates specific instructions regarding attire, it is disrespectful to show up well beyond the dress code. Moreover, you may stick out like a sore thumb when you stand or sit with guests who ‘obeyed’ the dress code, which might lead to you feeling pretty uncomfortable all day.

For example, if the dress code is specified as ‘cocktail’, it would be a style faux-pas to appear in a ballroom gown as a female guest. And if it is a white tie event, the expectation is for male guests to appear in tuxedo jackets, white ties and matching pants. Female guests can show up in ballroom gowns.

White and black-tie dress codes are considered strictly formal. However, if you’re not sure how to dress, you can always call the RSVP indicated on the invitation card for clarification. Do so well in advance of the big day, giving you time to shop for appropriate wedding accessories in keeping with the dress code.

Avoid An All-Black (Or White) Ensemble

While an all-black ensemble may look great at formal events, it may not exactly fit the bill for a wedding. Weddings are celebrations of love and happily-ever-afters, and unless it is actively specified as the dress code, an all-black ensemble may evoke something different from the celebratory mood.

If you really do prefer to dress darkly, then according to stylists, black can be combined with a brighter colour to create warmth, which may be a safer option. However, gambling with all-black apparel represents a big risk.

Even more importantly, however; do not, we repeat, not, wear a white dress when attending someone else’s wedding, unless it’s been explicitly stated as fair game. This is a time for the bride to take the limelight, after all. Same goes for cream, ecru, beige and any other hue with close ties to the fair, frosted shade.

Exercise Caution With Anything Too Show-Stopping Or Casual

Speaking of avoiding stealing the bride’s limelight, it’s generally considered something of a fashion faux pas to wear anything too sparkly or show-stopping.

Subtlety and sophistication are the watchwords here, so steer clear of, for example, a dress made entirely of sequins, an outfit that bears loads of skin, anything primarily made from sheer, animal patterns and, of course, a tiara.

On the flip side, avoid anything that’s considered ‘casual’ unless it’s truly, explicitly stated as acceptable. So, generally speaking, you shouldn’t wear denim, flip-flops (even if it’s a beach wedding), trainers, sloganned items, or shorts to a wedding.

The Bottom Line

It can be uncomfortable showing up at a wedding only to realise you look oddly different from the rest of the attendees. Because of this, it’s best to pay close attention to the dress code and, if in doubt, just ask!

The Perfect Birthday Weekend In Prague: 6 Things To Do

So, you’ve decided to celebrate your birthday weekend in Prague? Allow us to congratulate you, not only on it being your birthday, but also on your taste in cities.

As one of Europe’s most atmospheric, energetic cities, both sophisticated and insalubrious, there really is something here for everyone, where you can still get a taste of medieval Europe, enjoy high-art and culture, or scratch the surface on something altogether more spirited.

Indeed, in recent decades, the Czech capital has become one of the most visited cities in the world, with millions descending the steeples of the City of a Hundred Spires each year to enjoy the famous Gothic architecture and to pay homage to the birthplace of pilsner beer.

With so much to see and do, the city feels like the perfect place to spend a birthday weekend. To help you narrow down your itinerary, here are 6 things to do on your birthday weekend in Prague.

Go Sightseeing

Though Prague is famous for its beer, bars and live bands, if you’d rather not spend your entire birthday weekend in something of a stupor, then rest assured that the city has plenty of daytime activities to enjoy, too.

Prague is a city of truly stunning views and vistas, and if you’re keen to get the measure of the city early into your birthday weekend, then a sightseeing stroll complete with some magical views across the city is a great way to start your trip.

Your first stop should, without doubt, be one of Prague’s key icons, Charles Bridge, which guarantees a breathtaking perspective of the city. And if you don’t wish to cast your eyes that far, the structure has plenty to look at in the short distance too, with statues, pillars and carvings all of historical intrigue and significance.

That said, our favourite point of Prague appreciation can be taken in from the top of Prague castle. Especially in winter when the rooftops are covered in snow, it looks like a city straight out of a fairy tale book.

If you’re truly committed to taking in some fabulous views of the city, then consider taking the Funicular Railway to the top of Petrin Hill (tickets cost just CZK 24, which is less than a pound) and its lookout tower, which costs around CZK 50. From here, panoramic views of Prague await.

A Memorable Activity

It’s your birthday so some sort of focused activity to make your birthday memorable is a must. If it’s a rainy day, then why not visit a Prague Escape room? There are plenty in the city to choose from, but perhaps the most popular, and based around a story featuring The KGB, The Soviet Union and communism in Czechoslovakia, is The Nuclear Bunker Escape Room.

Prague is well known for it’s tourist-friendly shooting ranges, too, attracting stags, groups of friends and those curious to know what it’s like to pull a trigger. It boasts several world-leading shooting ranges, should you be keen on pitching your skills against your pals in a safe space. Though you’ll find plenty of smaller ranges in the centre of Prague, the best are arguably found a short train ride out of downtown.

At Prague Ranger, 40 minutes from the centre, you can shoot at a range of between 15 metres all the way to a whopping 500 metres, in its large open-air range. These larger arenas allow for big groups (up to 60 in the case of Prague Ranger), and it’s recommended that you should put aside an entire afternoon – or four hours – for the activity.

Should you choose to visit a range closer to Prague’s centre, then you can expect indoor facilities and generally shorter ranges.

If you’re after something less mentally and physically challenging, then what about a vintage car tour? Here, you can sit back and relax while a chauffeur takes you to some of the most popular places in the city, all completed in an old-school, open-topped European car.

Alternatively, consider bathing in beer. Beer bathing is an ancient tradition in parts of Eastern Europe – particularly the Czech Republic. You don’t actually bathe in beer; you soak in a hot tub filled with the natural extracts used to brew, but you do get beer on tap to drink while you soak. Speaking of which…

Enjoy A True Czech Beer Hall Experience

Be honest, one of the main reasons you’re in Prague for your birthday weekend is to try its revered beer, right?

Many beer-aficionados consider the ale and lager from the Czech Republic to be some of the best in the world, with the country’s raucous beer halls the focal point for consuming the good stuff as freshly poured as you’ll find.

Serving beer by the barrel alongside plates of old Bohemian specialities, a must visit is Pivovarský Klub, which has had over 900 different kinds of beer passed through their tubes during its history, as well as a current 250 different kinds of bottled beer.

Alternatively (or additionally, let’s face it), you’ll want to head to the brewery and restaurant U Fleků which has been brewing beer in the same spot since 1499. Yes, 1499! It undoubtedly attracts the tourists – and is one of the most visited places in Prague –  but this convivial beer hall, with long wooden communal tables and wildly jovial atmosphere, is worth facing down the throngs of thirsty visitors.

Facing down your hangover, however, might take more work!

Dine In Style

You’re in Prague to celebrate your birthday in style, and you’ll be pleased to hear that the city’s dining scene is well and truly thriving in 2022, with fine dining establishments rubbing shoulders with more traditional joints, the best of which are focused in the Old Town, where you’ll likely be staying.

Our favourite special occasion restaurant in the city has to be La Dégustation Bohême Bourgeoise, whose recipes are based on a 19th century cookbook but whose dishes look (and taste) anything but old-fashioned. It’s well-deserving of its Michelin star, and with its tasting menu clocking in at around £84, it’s pretty good value, too, for the quality of the cooking here.

Another starred restaurant in the city that we keep returning to is Field, which does deceptively simple modern takes on traditional Czech dishes, and packs bags of flavour and plenty of refinement.

If you’d like a traditional traditional experience, rather than a modern approach to the classics, then you should try Lokál, which offers hearty traditional dishes like beef tartare, schnitzel with potato salad, pig’s headcheese and beef goulash, all perfect for soaking up that Pilsner!

If you’re craving a shift from Czech cuisine on your trip to Prague, Italian food is well-represented in the city, too, with Divinis and Dejvická 34 both perennially popular and reliably delicious. Dobrou chuť!

Czech Out Prague’s Classical & Jazz Music Scenes

Almost as famous as Prague’s beer is its classical music scene, which you should definitely check out if you’re looking for a more laid back pace to proceedings on your trip. The three main venues are The National Theatre, housed in a gorgeous neoclassical building right next to the Vltava River, The Estates Theatre and The Prague State Opera.

The Prague State Opera is famous for its stunning theatrical performances, with opera and drama represented almost every night of the year. Best of all? You can buy tickets for the bargain price of 450 CZK, which is just £15!

Should you be seeking something more uptempo, then Palác Akropolis is one of Prague’s best venues for live music. For jazz, which is huge in the city, Jazz Dock is probably Prague’s hottest jazz club.

Dance The Night Away

You’ve wined (or rather ‘beered’), dined and done the opera. To finish up your birthday trip to Prague, it’s pretty much obligatory to get your dancing shoes on.

Because what better excuse to dance the night away than seeing in – or seeing off – your birthday! Settle into your evening at Roxy, which fuses art and music to visually arresting effect, before heading to U bukanýra, an electro-music-houseboat-bar which is open until the morning hours and is the place to go after all the bars close.

Cross Club and Chapeau Rouge are our other favourite places to party, as they play a great mix of drum’n’bass, trance, techno and jungle. Or, Déjàvu, in the centre of town, remains one of the most popular places in Prague to drink and get down.

And with that, we wish you Happy Birthday!

6 Of The Best Takeaway & Delivery Neapolitan Pizzas In South London

It’s funny how lockdown and that enforced, prolonged period of domesticity has warped our sense of time. Doesn’t it seem so long ago that everyone was watching Tiger King? Hasn’t the novelty of daily football long since worn off? And remember when there was none? And don’t all those homebaked banana breads seem a distant memory? Yep, this has been a confusing time, and ‘time’ has been, well, confusing.

However, here’s one misconception from the distant memories of lockdown which has been surprisingly disproved; that we were all scrolling takeaway apps and scoffing down deliveries every night of the week.

While data from Google Keyword Planner reveals that worldwide searches for ‘delivery’, ‘food delivery’, ‘takeaway’ and ‘takeout’ rose by almost 300 per cent between March and May, it seems that the British people haven’t had as much food delivered to our doors as one might assume.

It seems that in the UK, spending more time at home seems to be a recipe for cooking, rather than ordering food in. However, there are certain meals that, when cooked at home, without the right equipment, just don’t taste the same.

Indeed, the UK’s second most popular takeaway food (after Chinese) is one we think is best left in the hands of the experts; no matter how many pizza stones and artisan balls of mozzarella you invest in, there’s nothing quite like an authentic, Naples style wood fired pizza made by the professionals with love and respect for tradition.

Today we’re focusing our attention south of the river, where some of the capital’s finest pizza is being slung. With many of London’s best pizza restaurants family run affairs, they are being understandably cautious about reopening, but are thankfully offering takeaway and delivery to keep things ticking along.

We don’t want to lose these amazing places forever, so if you’re looking to support local restaurant businesses in the coming months, do so here, at our favourite pizza places. Here are 6 of the best takeaway and delivery Neapolitan pizzas in South London.

BRAVI RAGAZZI, STREATHAM

Bravi Ragazzi, the tiny Neapolitan pizzeria, prides itself on tradition and authenticity, and that’s exactly what you’re here for too, right? In our humble opinion, this right here is the best takeaway Neapolitan pizza in South London.

Several boxes have to be ticked for a pizza to qualify as a traditional Neapolitan in the eyes of the connoisseurs. 00 flour, water and salt form the dough, and it must be hand kneaded and given ample time to rise before being shaped by hand rather than rolling pin. After that, it’s topped with San Marzano or Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio tomatoes and Mozzarella di Bufala Campana, and cooked quickly at incredibly high heat in a wood fired pizza oven. The result should be pillowy, soft and elastic, with toppings light rather than overwhelming.

Anyway, the good guys at Bravi Ragazzi know all that, and their respect for tradition has made their pizzas the toast of Streatham and beyond. They also do a superb tiramisu, and are currently on Deliveroo and Just Eat.

Address: 2A Sunnyhill Rd, Streatham, London SW16 2UH

PIZZERIA PELLONE, BATTERSEA

Pizzeria Pellone on Lavender Hill (just a short bus ride up from Clapham Junction) is something of a game of two halves. The first side of the menu is Franco Baresi style; austere, traditional and masterful in its mistake-free delivery. The latter is more inspired by Roberto Baggio; creative, joyful and exciting.

Enough of the football analogies; this is superb pizza, make no mistake, with authentic Neapolitan recipes here using Caputo flour, Gustarosso tomato sauce and Buffalo Mozarella straight from Campania. That comes as no surprise; the family owns five Pizzeria Pellones in Naples, and their restaurants in the Motherland regularly receive plaudits.

That said, it’s in the Pizze Le Pizze Gourmet section of the menu where the real excitement lies; the white pizzas here are superb and the Calzone Fritto, heavy on the black pepper and punchy with housemade salami, is a cult classic.

This could very well be the best takeaway Neapolitan pizza in South London. Pizza Pellone is currently available on Deliveroo and Uber Eats.

Address: 42 Lavender Hill, Battersea, London SW11 5RL

BIANCO 43, GREENWICH

We’re heading further east now and to Bianco 43, because the good people of Greenwich deserve great pizza too, right? The Italian duo Massimo and Fabrizo hail from Rome and Naples respectively, with the latter a highly regarded mozzarella supplier. This passion for produce translates onto the plate; the ingredients are top notch and the pizzas refined.

Currently, Biano 43 can be ordered for delivery on Deliveroo.

Address: 43 Greenwich Church St, Greenwich, London SE10 9BL

FRANCESCO’S, CAMBERWELL

San Marzano tomatoes? Check. Slowly proved dough? Of course. Blistered crust and barely kissed Buffalo Mozzarella on top? You know the drill by now.

Francesco’s, on Camberwell’s Church Street, does all the simple things right, which is what proud Neapolitan pizza is all about.

We’re particularly in love with the pizzeria’s Marinara; those aforementioned San Marzano tomatoes, garlic and oregano, which is so reassuring in its simplicity. And for just a fiver, it’s a steal.

You can order pizzas from Francesco’s on Deliveroo, Just Eat, Uber Eats or via their website.

Address: 53 Camberwell Church St, Camberwell, London SE5 8TR

SORSI E MORSI, TOOTING

Tooting’s Broadway Market has become one of South London’s foodie focal points and pizza slingers Sorsi e Morsi have certainly contributed to the market’s stellar reputation. The vibe here is as uncomplicated as it comes; just a handful of simple, elegant pizzas using Fior di Latte cheese and Salerno tomato sauce, wood fired and fresh as you like.

Open Monday to Saturday, 5-10pm, and available to order on Deliveroo and Uber Eats.

Address: Unit 60-62 Broadway Market, 29 Tooting High St, London SW17 0RJ

Website: sorsiemorsi.co.uk

PIZZA BRIXTON, BRIXTON

Though Brixton is blessed with fantastic wood fired pizza options (the original Franca Manca is in Brixton Village covered market, and Mamma Dough is also superb), we’re particular fans of Pizza Brixton on Brixton Hill.

Now with three outposts in South West London, the original is still our favourite, with a light and airy room and even lighter pizzas. It’s also light on your wallet; no pizza here will set you back more than a tenner, and for the duration of summer Pizza Brixton is offering two Magheritas for just £8! A lovely surprise to end our exploration of South London’s best takeaway Neapolitan pizzas.

Available on Deliveroo.

Address: 105 Brixton Hill, Brixton, London SW2 1AA

5 Things To Consider Before Investing in A Watch

The basic, functional need for watches has undeniably waned in recent years. Who needs a watch when a smartphone is always close to hand, after all?

However, here at IDEAL we’re still huge fans of timepieces worn in the traditional sense; faces, wrists, the works. While, of course, you can check your mobile phone for the time, doing so becomes a distraction, because let’s face it, our phones are a distraction.

Indeed, what was meant to be a quick glance at the time can easily become a Facebook conversation with your mum for an hour and an additional twenty minutes spent scrolling through social media.

Why not invest in a watch to save yourself time – literally, metaphorically, metaphysically, whatever – and you’ll notice that your day starts running more efficiently, too.

It seems that we’re not the only ones enamoured with the glory of proper timepieces. The lifestyle website Refinery29 reveals that, “since the pandemic took hold, consumers have begun investing in long-lasting, quality items”.

Moreover, they divulge that, “in 2021, the global fashion search engine Lyst has reported a 42% increase in searches for couple, engagement, and wedding watches”. It seems that watches are growing in popularity for all manners of reasons and occasions.

Whatever your reason for buying a watch, once you’ve decided to purchase a timepiece, there are a few things you need to consider. Luckily we’re here to help, with the help of The Watch Exchange London, here are 5 things to consider before investing in a watch.

Your Budget

The first thing you’ll want to do is nail down your price point. Firstly, there are high-end designer brands that everyone knows; think Cartier, Hermes and Rolex, which cost a pretty penny but are known for their craftsmanship and couture. These make for fine investment pieces, but are out of reach of most people’s budgets.

Luckily, there are lots of new, independent designers selling impressive timepieces in the region of £100, though you don’t necessarily even have to spend that much. If you’re after a digital watch, for instance, then the ever-cool Casio’s vintage design clocks in at around the £50 mark.

Another question is if you’d prefer a brand spanking new watch or a pre-owned yet still prestigious piece, or a more simple but fashionable watch found on the high street.

Currently, the pre-owned Swiss watch market is booming. Forbes points out that they are as environmentally friendly as they are stylish, smart and investment-savvy.

If you’re buying an investment timepiece like this, it’s important to do your homework and buy from a reputable auction house. There are fakes out there which are increasingly hard to spot, make no mistake.

Should the type of luxury watch you’re coveting feel completely out of reach, you could consider entering a watch competition. These are great opportunities to snag a luxury watch at a fraction of the retail price. There are both in-person and online watch competitions that offer a chance to win high-end watches from luxury brands. Just make sure to thoroughly research and verify the legitimacy of the competition before entering.

A Question Of Lifestyle

We’ve already said we’re fans of analogue watches but modern smart watches have a place, too. We love our smart watch at the gym and have found taking one out on a long walk, leaving our credit card at home and being able to buy a coffee with the tap of a watch immensely pleasurable.

If such small pleasures don’t resonate, then remember that buying a watch really depends on your lifestyle. Do you want something smart or something that looks more casual? If you’re looking for a mix of both, we adore Casio’s A700WMG-9AVT watch – part of the digital-vintage collection and straddling the link between dressy and casual perfectly; for a reasonable price, too.

Strap Or Bracelet

Do you prefer a watch with a strap or a bracelet?

The great thing about straps is that you can change them. Indeed, so many watch brands offer interchangeable watch straps that you can change at home, helping you switch up your outfit in tune (or should thay be ‘time’?) with your watch.  T

he ease of being able to change the strap by yourself means that you can mix and match the straps with your outfits and your mood. You can also switch up the material of your strap depending on your mood, with the most common strap materials being leather, rubber and canvas.

Bracelets, on the other hand, are commonly made of metallic materials such as gold and stainless steel. They tend to look a little smarter than their strap counterparts.

The Shape Of You

News just in; watch cases aren’t only round or square. Yep, watches can come in all shapes and sizes, and represent a strong fashion statement when worn right.

There’s also rectangle watch faces and oval tonneau, which look like a barrel (and means barrel in French, too), as well as avant-garde shapes, which don’t really have a shape at all.

There’s even carré, which is a beautiful square, recognisable by its gently rounded corners. Or, how about a cushion shape, which some refer to as a ‘’squircle” shape, which are similar to carré faces, similar to oval shaped watches, but are horizontally oval on the wrist rather than vertical.

Yep, there’s a lot.

With all these shapes, it can be tricky picking one that suits your needs, lifestyle and wrist. Whilst it’s vital to buy a watch that you love the look of, first and foremost, if you’re indecisive, then let the shape of your wrist dictate your tastes.

For example, if you have small, dainty wrists, an oversized watch case may look like you’re a child playing dress up. However, a dainty watch on a large wrist may make your wrist look larger than it is, which you don’t want. Your best bet is to pop into a watch store and try on lots of different shapes to see which looks best.

Understand the Jargon

At watch-face value, the technical aspects of timepieces couldn’t be more simple. In fact, it’s designed to be just that; with even the most cursory of glances, you should be able to get all the information you need from your watch.

But when you dig a little deeper, the world of watches and watchmaking is a complex, often confusing affair, with a wide range of words that can feel like jargon to the uninitiated, particularly when time is of the essence and you don’t have time to whip out a dedicated dictionary when shopping for a watch. Moreover, if you aren’t familiar with the jargon, you may well be upsold a watch you simply don’t need.

There are so many technical, terminological aspects to consider, like do you want a watch with a dual timer or is it easier if it winds automatically. Do you want a rotating bezel or like the aesthetic of a day and night indicator? Do you want a deployment clasp? Is having an altimeter important to you? Do you want a watch with anadigi display features?  Do you have any idea what we’re talking about?

Before you invest in a watch, it’s a good idea to understand all the terminology. Let us direct you to this very helpful article on the terminology of watches here.
