4 IDEAL TRAVEL TIPS FOR CONNEMARA & CONG, IRELAND

Frequent tourists to Ireland will be familiar with the usual itinerary; a good few days in Dublin before taking a road trip to the southern coast, culminating in Galway City. And while there’s nothing wrong with this schedule, it does neglect some of the very best of the Emerald Isle which are just begging to be explored.

Perhaps the most jaw-dropping and scenic of all is the Connemara Peninsula, Cong and its Kylemore Abbey. The region features dramatic peaks, white sandy beaches, and plenty of peat bogs that offer a lot of insights on expansive Ireland’s culture.  Make the most of it with these; our 4 IDEAL travel tips for Connemara and Cong, Ireland.

WHEN TO VISIT

Like other regions of Ireland, varying weather conditions exist in the region and temperatures can be chilly even at the height of summer. That said, there are certainly optimum times of year to visit.

Winter in Connemara, for instance, is ‘brrrr’ levels of cold, seeing short days with very low temperatures. The region experiences plenty of rain with snow and freezing temperatures are near the norm. Because of this, a lot of the hotel and accommodation options are limited, with many closed during the season.

Even in summer, don’t bank on your days being filled with sunshine, but the months of July and August are the warmest and driest. In short; expect the unexpected and be sure to always carry along a waterproof and windproof jacket regardless of the season.

GETTING AROUND

It’s the wild west out here! Things get pretty rural and the area isn’t well served by public transport. Renting a car or using a tour company car are the best ways to explore the region at your own pace. Indeed, the available public buses cannot be relied on fully, and timetables are notoriously temperamental, especially because they don’t reach remote areas and are infrequent. If you don’t fancy driving, some tour companies offer day guided trips from Galway.

WHERE TO STAY

Despite this region’s weather conditions and low tourist attraction volume, there are several b’n’bs, hotels and restaurants to choose from. Accommodation in the town of Clifden is a good choice, it’s Connemara’s capital and boasts the majority of decent, well appointed places to stay, as well as its own bay; very picturesque indeed and ideal for those with an interest in watersports (or eating fish for that matter!). The town is also the launchpad for the Sky Road Loop – a 20-kilometre scenic loop close to the Clifden town.

WHAT TO DO

Connemara and the entire region is full of lush, verdant landscape and tall peaks which present amazing hiking opportunities. The peninsula is home to the Twelve Bens, among the highest peaks in Ireland.

Also worth a visit is The Kylemore Castle. Ireland is home to many castles, and this region is no exception. The history behind the Kylemore Castle is an interesting yet saddening one. The castle was built as a romantic gift by a wealthy businessman but later changed to an abbey when his wife died.

The Dog’s Beach, located some few kilometres from Roundstone Village, is a largely untouched, totally gorgeous stretch of sand which confirms Irelands’ claim of having some of the most stunning rural landscapes in the world. To experience even more of this beauty, drive along the Sky Road; the perfect way to enjoy some of the best views the region has to offer.

4 IDEAL PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE GETTING MARRIED

Hey IDEAL magazine, way to kill the buzz, we hear you say. But for a relationship to work long term and lovingly, practicality and pragmatism need to be nurtured. It’s not all roses and romance ’till death do you in. And while you might be filled with hope and optimism for a future with your other half, marriage is a serious contract that mustn’t be signed half-heartedly, with your non-dominant hand. Since around 40% of marriages reportedly end in divorce, it’s important to lay the groundwork before tying the knot. With that in mind, here are 4 IDEAL practical considerations before getting married.

EXPECTATIONS VS. REALITY

Before you say “I do,” you might want to ask ‘where do you see us in ten years time?’. Whilst not wanting to sound like a job interview, this discussion kinda is one; you need to check your expectations for the future are symbiotic and synergised. After all, you’ll both need to make significant decisions, and find compromises, regarding your finances, family life and where you’ll live, and if they’re aligned from the get go, then all the better.

YOUR FINANCES

Money can be a tough subject for couples to discuss, as they might not like to talk about their salary, savings or debt. It is, however, important that both parties have a thorough understanding of each other’s finances, as their debt could soon become your debt and their salary could impact your lifestyle.

Alternatively, if you have a significant amount of money in the bank, you might need to broach the subject of a prenuptial agreement, which can protect both of your assets should you one day decide to separate. If you need help with a prenuptial agreement, contact experienced family lawyers for advice.

DIVISION OF LABOUR

If you and your partner already live together, it’s likely you already have a cleaning routine in place and feel fully prepared to enter married life with the chores aleady divided fairly. If, however, you have yet to take the plunge and trial your domestic arrangements, you must discuss how the household chores list will work in your house.

For example, if you don’t mind cooking each day but hate washing dishes, you should talk about whether your partner might be willing to tackle the task, so you don’t need to. While it might seem like a small issue, it’s the little problems that can lead to big arguments within the home. All of that leaving the lids off? Bad news. Keep finding tissues stuffed behind the sofa? It could spell trouble.

ATTITUDES TO SPENDING

Man, it sounds so bleak. But credit scores can be important in a marriage as they can ultimately determine whether you can secure a mortgage, large loan or finance. It is, therefore, important to ask if your other half has a poor, fair or good score, so you will know what the future will hold for you both during married life.

It might also be beneficial to help them to remove incorrect information or build up their credit history prior to marriage, so you can quickly move onto the next stage after you walk down the aisle, such as buying your first home together.

4 IDEAL PLACES TO SHOP FOR DESIGNER GEAR IN ITALY

Italy is home to the world’s most famous fashion designers and Milan is widely considered the planet’s fashion capital. Hell, the country’s even nicknamed ‘Bel Paese’; the beautiful country. You get the picture; looking glam and gorgeous seems to course through the collective blood of Italy. Should you be on holiday here, then, we’re going to assume you have a passing interest in the haute couture. Nonetheless, a little guidance can always go a long way. With that in mind, here are 4 IDEAL places to shop for designer gear in Italy.

MILAN, ITALY

No list of fashion destinations would be complete without Milan. Indeed, as we said, it’s internationally recognised as one of the fashion capitals of the world, where prestigious luxury brands, both Italian and foreign, have their headquarters. The city’s fashion district, known as The Quadrilatero Della Moda, is bound by four of the planet’s most fashionable streets (Via Montenapoleone, Via Manzoni, Via Della Spiga and Corso Venezia) forming a square. Inside is a maze of upscale fashion boutiques by the dozen.

For those after vintage apparel, the trendy and more hipster-leaning Corso di Porta Ticinese is a favourite for many. Milan is also home to The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, one of the world’s oldest shopping malls and a major landmark of the city.

ROME

While Rome is more famous for its colosseum, and doesn’t have the same reputation as Milan when it comes to fashion, if you’re looking to get your hands on a pair of those famous red soled shoes, then it’s the city to visit. Indeed, the eternal city is the place where the one and only  Valentino Garavani – best known as just Valentino – started his own line in the Vian Condotti in 1959.  In 2015 the infamous brand opened its new and largest flagship store, situated in Piazza di Spagna; right next to the creative headquarters of Valentino Maison. Amongst good company, right?

But it’s not just about Valentino in Rome. Nope, the tridente also has major appeal; three streets (Corso, Ripetta and Babuino) and their crisscrossing cousins (Frattina, Condotti and Borgognona) which lead you into Piazza del Popolo, and which define the city’s luxurious, exclusive shopping centre.

VENICE, ITALY

Famous for its picturesque waterways and scenic canals, Venice gives off vibes of luxury and class (if you can swerve the crowds and hawkers, of course) in bucketloads. Traditionally, local craftsmen specialised in glass blowing and creating delicate masks worn for the Carnival of Venice. But now, the Italian city is becoming an attraction for fashion lovers with its prestigious showrooms and ateliers of big designers.

If you’re looking for designer boutiques, head towards St Mark’s Square, look out for the streets Calle Delle Mercerie or Calle Larga XXII Marzo and shop to your heart’s content. Discover charming side streets where you can buy custom made Venetian slippers and other garments unique to the city. The vibe away from the tourist traps is bespoke and one of a kind; just lovely.

FLORENCE, ITALY

Who could leave out Florence when talking Italy and catwalk swagger? It’s one of the rising stars of fashion, and in the last decade has seen a growing focus on their efforts to break into the upper echelons of the fashion world. It’s working; the Italian city is home to big names such as Gucci and Salvatore Ferragamo as well as other big-name boutiques which can be found at Via Tornabuoni.

Go deep and discover local markets and tanneries in Florence, many of which are from a family of traders who have been creating leather goods for centuries. There’s also the unmissable Ponte Vecchio for jewellery lovers; discover pieces set with precious gemstones that you’d struggle to find anywhere else.

5 IDEAL WAYS TO CELEBRATE NYE 2019 – 2020

T-minus three months and the noughties are over. Personally, we can’t wait to see the back of them; a decade of bad politics, narcissism and danger which has left a sour taste in the mouth, make no mistake. But let’s look forward, with renewed vigour and optimism. If you’d like to bid farewell to the last ten as best you can, in style and sweetly, then read on; our 5 IDAL ways to celebrate NYE 2019 – 2020.

COCKTAIL PARTY PARADISE

Want to forget the last ten years? Us too, responsibly of course. So, you’ll find us drinking cocktails and pretending to be sophisticated this NYE. Check out these stylish cocktail recipes which will impress guests and get you merry in equal measure. Some of our favourites include:

  • Bellini cocktails
  • Champagne mimosas
  • Amaretto fizz
  • Espresso martini
  • Mulled wine

As your guests will more than likely spend most of their evening dancing, chatting, drinking and reminiscing, you can trust stomachs will soon rumble. To ensure they are still at your party or intimate gathering once midnight chimes, you should provide plenty of finger food they can enjoy in-between songs and conversations. No one fancies a sit down meal in this setting, right?

RENT OUT A LUXURY PRIVATE HOUSE

After a chaotic Christmas (don’t deny, it’s always chaotic), you and your loved ones might long for a break from the domestic setting, allowing you to relax, have fun and spend quality time together after what, for many, is a testing festive period. With the spirit of escaping the nest and looking forward, if you want to see 2020 in with style, consider organising a short break in a private, luxury house in the likes of Scotland, the Lake District or the Cotswolds. Representing a sense of freedom after the sometimes oppressive nature of the Christmas social calendar, somewhere like Big House Experience can cater to your every need.

HEAD TO EDINBURGH…

If you don’t fancy hosting anything, then a break away in a city of international partying repute could be your wisest move. Hogmanay (Scottish New Year’s celebrations) in Edinburgh has earned great fame through its boisterous knees up and emphasis on tradition. It’s a three day extravaganza, beginning on the 30th December with the Torchlight procession, running into the grand fireworks display on the night of the 31st and finally, culminating in the Loony Dook, a fancy-dress fuelled plunge into the city’s River Forth. Scotland in Winter is cold at the best of times, even before you consider a dip in freezing cold water, so be warned, this one is not for the faint hearted. Take in views of the evening’s fireworks from a high vantage point, which Edinburgh has plenty of, for maximum exposure to the illuminated Scottish skies.

….OR BERLIN

Or should you prefer to hit the continent to offer our European brothers and sisters solidarity, then Berlin’s NYE celebrations center around the iconic Brandenburg Gate, party-primed and pedestrianised for the night, it’s one of the best of its kind in the world.

Festival vibes fill the air, with DJs, live performances from major artists, and food trucks catering to your every hunger pang. I think we’ve talked about fireworks enough in Edinburgh, but it goes without saying that the ones here are spectacular, as you ought expect from a party which calls itself the biggest street party on the New Year’s Eve Calendar. Berlin is world-famous for a diverse, edgy and exciting nightlife and all those characteristics are turned up to 11 for the biggest night of the year. Europe’s finest, in our view.

KEEP IT LOCAL

Or, you could observe an increasingly popular New Year’s Eve tradition and stay home. In fact, last year saw two thirds of Brits intending to reject traditional parties in favour of their own familiar four walls. Who can blame them? Drinks prices (if you can get to the bar, that is) are extortionate, crowds huge and tickets needed for places you’d normally stroll into. So, how does a night of Netflix and nothing much else sound?

4 IDEAL TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE BEST BROADBAND OPTION

With the government’s recent announcement that they plan to install ultra-fast broadband in the UK’s remotest areas by 2025, you may have got thinking about your own options. Because while you stare at a rotating beach ball and wonder when your next frame of Friends will load, others will be downloading films in seconds. The future is here, if the home secretary is to be believed (hmm), and you need to keep up with the pace of things. With that in mind, here are 4 IDEAL tips for choosing the best broadband option.

COMPARE PROVIDERS

Even though your current deal and coverage may seem satisfactory, there is always improvement in this game, especially since the technology of connection is always evolving. Don’t be afraid to compare the different offerings on the market regularly, to make sure you’re getting the service you deserve. If you work at home, particularly, then you need to make sure you get right. Seek out broadband comparison sites and do your due diligence on providers so you know you’re getting the best deal.

PACKAGE PRIORITIES

Ask yourself; what kind of internet consumer am I? This will help you narrow down the vast options in front of you to find something truly suited to your needs. Should you need broadband for simple processes and super speed isn’t required, then an ADSL package would probably be best; it’s basic but it’s also affordable. Are you planning on your broadband package serving the whole family? Then parental controls are a must. If Netflix binges and iPlayer love-ins are your de rigueur, then you’ll need a much more extensive system; look for unlimited download options and the possibility of fibre broadband to get things moving super fast.

CAN I BUNDLE IN WITH OTHER SERVICES?

It wasn’t so long ago that you could create an all-encompassing bundle of device consumption; TV, Broadband, phone services and more could be gathered in an all-in-one service package. Today, it’s a little more complicated, as competition has increased, the myriad options available have blurred. If you do go for a complete bundle, there’s a lot of legwork required of you to cancel contracts and switch commitments which you already have in place. A headache too far, we think; it’s probably easier to focus just on your broadband provider as one, singular unit.

COVERAGE OPTIONS

If you’re living rurally, or even, sometimes, in the city, the length and breadth of coverage and its strength can vary hugely. It’s vital before switching up to get familiar with which provider offers the sturdiest, most reliable connection and at what cost. Uswitch’s Broadband Postcode Checker is a good place to start. Interestingly, Virgin Media comes out on top, more than double the next quickest (Vodafone).

5 IDEAL WAYS TO IMPROVE THE SAFETY OF YOUR HOME

An English person’s home is their castle, as the old saying goes. As such, feeling safe and secure in the domestic space is crucial to your welfare and wellbeing, equally. Ensuring your house is also a fortress can bring a peace of mind which will have you content to live there for the long run. And we’re all after that feeling of security in an increasingly unpredictable world, right? With that in mind, here are 5 IDEAL ways to improve the safety of your home

SECURE YOUR HOME

A classic – some might say antiquated – form of ensuring the safety of your property is through a good old fashioned alarm system. Statistics prove that homes with security systems installed are less likely to be targeted by criminals. This works two ways; deterrence and detection, effective both in burglary and trespassing signalling. There is, though, the obvious downside of it being bloody, incessantly loud on a quiet Sunday morning when you go out to pick up the papers but forget the code. Nope? Just us then.

Alternatively, many people opt for a visible alarm system which isn’t actually in operation. This has the deterrent element covered, but doesn’t do the other stuff. It’s your choice whether this is enough.

INSTALL SMART CCTV

Alongside a security system, if you’re someone who travels often, it may be worth installing Smart CCTV. But isn’t all CCTV pretty intelligent, we hear you ask? Sure, but this has an I.Q way above average. Indeed, these cameras can record both the inside and outside of your house and will save the footage to the device itself or somewhere like the cloud. You can connect your smartphone so you can live stream everything that’s going on at home and keep an eye on things at home from afar

SAFETY & STRENGTH IN SUPERIOR WINDOWS

With all this tech and spying software, it can sometimes be easy to overlook the more simple safety options at your disposal. And as anyone who’s watched a cartoon burglar go about their business knows, it’s ajar or weak windows which provide the ultimate come on and ‘come in?’.

So, burglar proof your windows by installing window sensors which are designed to detect whenever they’re opened. Go further, and look into installing tempered glass, which is four times stronger than annealed (the most common glass used in windows). However, if you’re willing to pay a little more, then consider plexiglas or polycarbonate windows, which are fantastic plastic derived alternatives to glass. Plexiglas is shatterproof, impact resistant and about ten times stronger than regular glass windows. Polycarbonate is even stronger.

MAKE FRIENDS WITH YOUR NEIGHBOURS

Everybody needs good ones, right? And the ultimate definition of a valuable one isn’t in their willingness to lend a little salt or keep you informed of their more raucous parties, but more in the vigilance levels they’re willing to commit to. Yep, curtain twitching is very much welcome here. So, make friends with those nextdoor, below and above, and a mutually beneficial relationship of keeping an eye on each other’s places can develop. Perfect.

INSTALL FLOOD LIGHTS

Another oldie but goodie, this. A simple floodlight which activates when someone approaches the house can often stop burglars in their tracks and deter them from breaking into your home. Because there’s nothing potential thieves fear more than a stark, bright light. The added bonus here is illumination when you get home from a night out and can’t find your keys. Or the keyhole.

And though this level of prevention is all well and good, cure also matters; check out our 5 IDEAL home insurance tips to help protect your home against burglars over here.

The safety of you’re home isn’t just about improving it’s security. Indeed, with global warming, flooding and other environmental problems and technological advancements, there are many other things to consider when it comes to improving the safety of your home. 5 IDEAL WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HAIR COLOUR LAST FOR LONGER

5 IDEAL WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HAIR COLOUR LAST FOR LONGER

Everything in life is temporary. Nothing lasts forever. We know this. But is it really asking too much to expect our newly dyed locks to stay looking vivid and vibrant for just a little longer? Well, no actually, it isn’t. The good news is that there are ways and means, and tips and tricks, to prolong that just coloured confidence. What’s more, it doesn’t cost a fortune to eek far more longevity out of your newest shade, with these; our 5 IDEAL ways to make your hair colour last for longer.

PREP YOUR HAIR

Long lasting colour starts before you wash it; you first have to lay the groundworks and deploy a little foresight to get the job done properly. So, the day before you get your hair dyed, wash it with a chelating shampoo, which removes build up of toxins and chemicals in your hair created by modern beauty products. It’s important to do this a day prior to the dying stage, as colour holds better to slightly dirty hair; just washed is just too slippery. It’s also important post-dye to lay further foundations for prolonging the colour. A decent toner is vital; for more advice on some of the best, get details on Allaboutthegloss.com

5 IDEAL WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HAIR COLOUR LAST FOR LONGER

WAIT TO WASH

If you can, wait at least 72 hours to wash your hair after dying. It takes up to three days for the cuticle layer of your hair to fully close after dying, and since this is what traps the colour molecule in, doing so will make sure your colour lasts for longer. When you do wash your hair, a gentle sulfate-free shampoo is best. Also, it’s worth splashing out on some products designed for colour treated hair such as a color treatment conditioner.

These types of product aren’t just a marketing ploy. Dyed hair is extra prone to becoming dry and brittle, so to help help prevent dryness, treat your hair with products specially formulated for coloured hair – they have ingredients in them that help create protective barriers, preventing the dye from washing out quickly.

Use a deep leave conditioner or hydrating oil treatment for an extra moisture boost, however don’t over-do the deep conditioning. This treatment is designed to penetrate the hair follicle and get deep inside to moisturise, but when the product is rinsed away, it takes the colour molecule with it which results in your hair colour fading.

INVEST IN A SHOWER FILTER & WASH LESS

Colour and water are not best friends. In fact, they don’t rub along at all harmoniously. While we’re not saying you should stop taking showers, you should think about making some tweaks to your routine. This starts with washing your hair less often and adopting a dry shampoo to soak up oil between washes.

If you dye your hair regularly then it might even be worth investing in a shower filter that’ll remove the chlorine minerals and chemicals from the water. It’s especially worth the expense if you live in an area with hard water, as this water is high in minerals and tends to strip our hair of its natural oils, dramatically affecting how much your hair colour fades over time.

5 IDEAL WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HAIR COLOUR LAST FOR LONGER

AVOID HOT SHOWERS

Speaking of showers, you should be taking cooler ones when you do wash your hair; the hotter the water, the quicker the colour loss, to put it simply. Indeed, hot water can decrease the lifetime of your hair colour so it’s best to avoid those long, languid showers in super hot water. To get technical; high temperatures open up your cuticles releasing the hair colour and moisture and this is one of the most common reasons colour fades. So, to prevent colour loss, shampoo and wash your hair with just room-temperature water. Then towel dry, condition and rinse with cold water to seal cuticles shut.

STEP BACK FROM THE HOT TOOLS

It’s no surprise that hairdryers, straighteners and curlers speed up the process of your hair colour fading. We get it, it’s hard not to use them and it can be tough to imagine life without them. But if you want your dye to last, it’s best to steer clear of them for the first week after colouring your hair and limit the amount you use them thereafter. Always use a thermal protectant spray, too, which will help protect against heat damage and subsequently help to reduce colour fade by maintaining the condition of your hair. A multi-pronged process, we know, but one which will leave your hair looking gorgeous for longer.

4 IDEAL WAYS TO UNIQUELY DOCUMENT YOUR TRAVELS

We need to talk about ‘Insta’. Because c’mon, we’re all thinking it. Life shouldn’t be viewed through that prism of perfection; manicured, edited, and photoshopped into oblivion. Hotfooting halfway across the world just to see it through a lens…well, the irony isn’t lost on us. Holidays are meant to be about getting away from it all, right? Putting the screens down, seeing a different way of life through the lens of reality, and learning to look up again.

Indeed, international travel is all about the new sights, people and experiences you encounter along the way. And while the temptation is strong to post every last detail of your trip, sometimes a more personal, individual documenting of your trip can be far more interesting. With that in mind, here are 4 IDEAL ways to uniquely document your travels.

KEEP A HANDWRITTEN DIARY

It may seem a bit old fashioned, but the act of writing with pen and paper somehow carries more gravitas than typing. What you write, doodle or note down is uneditable and therefore, precious. Don’t be self-conscious about what you’re writing or think that it has to be a work of literature; you are capturing a moment in time, so be candid about what you’re thinking and feeling. Buy yourself a small but high quality notebook and some pens that are easy to write with, and by the end of your travels, you’ll have a book of memories to treasure for life. Magical stuff.

START AN ONLINE BLOG

If you’re more digitally minded, travel blogging via your own website is a great way to not only document your experiences but also share them with friends, family and anyone else in the world who discovers it. Build a website with a professional hosting service like Krystal, and you can post words, video and photos on your blog for the public to enjoy. Some people even manage to earn an income from their blog or use it as a portfolio to help them start a career in digital marketing, giving you the perfect reason to travel more and spend less time in the office. If you like the sound of this, there are lots of different ways that you can start your own blog via platforms like WordPress and Wix. There are myriad hosting options, such as WP Engine (you can read the makeawebsitehub review if you’d like to learn more) or GoDaddy, to help get you started in creating your own personal travel blog.

DEVOTE ALL YOUR PHOTOS TO A THEME

It’s highly likely that you’ll be taking photos and videos during your trip, but have you thought about making a creative project of them than simply sticking everything on Instagram? It’s all about theming things with a rigorous devotion to consistency. For example, you could take a photo of your feet when you step off the plane in each new country or as you dip your toes in the ocean on every new beach.

Alternatively, take a toy or object with you and position it artistically in each landscape shot or even have it hidden in the background for followers and fans to find.

SEND UNIQUE POSTCARDS

To combine the ideas of a physical, paper document, amazing travel photography and sharing your own thoughts, views and experiences with family and friends, you could create your own postcards. Now that’s unique. There are apps that enable you to transform your travel photos into a printed postcard with a message and send it anywhere in the world with a few taps on your phone. Your family and friends will love receiving them, and you could even send some to yourself so you have a collection when you get home. And with that, bon voyage!

4 IDEAL DOMESTIC DATE NIGHT IDEAS THIS AUTUMN

The leaves are starting to fall and summer is all but over. Gone are the hazy evenings sipping Aperol on the terrace, farewell has been bid to romantic picnics, and park all dayers turning into pub all nighters now look more likely to become all duvet dayers. Hey, it was fun while it lasted, right? But don’t let this sense of melancholy and impermanence bring you down. There’s plenty to love about the new season, particularly its ability to frame the romantic in a whole new light; cosier and more homely than the heat of summer, but no less lovely, we think. With that in mind, here are 4 IDEAL domestic date night ideas this autumn.

AL FRESCO DINING

Sure, it might seem a little blustery and wet to make this work right now, but things will change, make our words. So, when you can, make the most of the clement weather, fire up the woodburner and enjoy a spot of alfresco dining in your garden this autumn.

Create a simple romantic meal or depending on your skillset, something more extravagant. Consider adding a sheltered area around your garden patio with a windshield to protect you and yours from cold winds, which will in turn create a cosy, intimate space in the garden and add plenty of ambient outdoor lighting to make things romantic. And why not take things a step further and set up a cosy tent in the garden to retreat to after your al fresco meal, which brings us neatly to our next date night idea for autumn…

CAMPING IN THE GARDEN

Camping may not be the first activity that springs to mind for an autumnal date night. Yes, it may be a bit chillier with a little more chance of rain (have we already mentioned the weather? Sorry, we’re British), but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying this gorgeous, romantic season. Indeed, with autumn comes breathtaking beauty, even in your own garden. While summer nights are typically hazy, autumn gives way to clearer skies which means opportunity for stargazing. The colder weather also presents the perfect opportunity to snuggle up together and if it gets too cold, you can always move things inside. Lovely stuff.

RENT A HOT TUB

Autumn is arguably one of the best times of year to enjoy a hot tub, too. When the air outside is cooler, climbing into a tub full of bubbling warm water is all the more enjoyable and satisfying. When you can see your warm breath meet the cold air, well, that’s just magic isn’t it? It’s also a great way to get outside and enjoy some fresh air whilst still keeping the heat in, and gives you the opportunity to enjoy the darker, starlit nights of Autumn.

String some whimsical fairy lights up for maximum effect, celebrating the drawing in of the night in style. Of course, not many of us are blessed with our own hot tub, but they are available for hire; current estimates put the cost for a weekend at around £170 for an inflatable one all the way up to £250 for a solid, wooden version.

MOVIE NIGHT

It may seem a bit cliched – a bit Friends, not lovers, if you will – but a movie night is the ideal domestic date idea for autumn. Indeed, seeing as the season can often bring unsettled weather, especially towards the latter part of the season when stormy conditions and strong gales are the norm, then it’s often better to hedge your bets inside, instead. And let’s be honest, there are few things more warming in autumn that cosying up at home with your loved one, preferably with a glass of red wine, and watching a good film.

There’s plenty of options to satisfy you both from the best Netflix comedy movies to horror movies. It’s worth narrowing down your selection before the date starts to avoid constant flicking and fussing (the ol’ paradox of choice, eh?) and to ensure that your significant other is not yawning through another romantic drama.

5 IDEAL SKILLS NEEDED TO BECOME A YOUTH COACH

Should you feel the calling of working with vulnerable young people in order to help them, firstly; thank you, the world needs more people like you. Secondly, you’re probably wondering how best to get into this challenging but rewarding field. You’re going to be encouraging personal development, life skills, respect and responsibility in those who need it most, and that’s great, but it requires planning and foresight before you begin. We’re here to help you get started, with these; our 5 IDEAL skills needed to become a youth coach.

POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT

We were all young once. As such, we think it’s fair to say that many of those adolescent years were defined by shyness, self-consciousness and a sense of not quite belonging. Ironically, we all felt that way.

Because of that, this is an age where positive reinforcement is absolutely essential to get the best out of people. As a youth worker, it’s a skill you’re going to need, and it’s one you’ll notice elicits the most engaged response from your mentees. Though positive reinforcement often takes the form of ‘rewards’, strong, direct and truthful praise can often represent the most effective tool in your armoury. Use it wisely.

OPENNESS

We’re certainly not imploring you to lay your life on the line and talk about your deepest fears in every session. But, an openness to honest conversation is a must for successful youth coaching, as teens may often at first appear reticent – monosyllabic, even – they are more often than not simply waiting for the right moment to open up. So, make sure your door is always open, metaphorically and physically, and ensure it’s well known that yours is an ear they can trust.

ROLE MODEL

If you’re to gain the respect and, most importantly, trust of your mentees, then you’re going to need to behave in a responsible, inspiring way at all times. This is achieved in many ways. Firstly, your strength of character should be something that adolescents aspire to; leadership, confidence and humility are all vital personality points to demonstrate and instill in others.

Possessing unique, applicable skills is also crucial. Having another qualification prior to entering the world of youth coaching can really help set the tone of your sessions. If your background is in singing, then the potential performers out there will naturally be drawn to you. Should you be skilled at shooting hoops and have previously qualified with a major in sports coaching, then for god’s sake, let it be known! Even if this involves pitching up with a portable hoop (check this post for some of the best on the market) and showing off your skills first hand.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION

It’s not all sunshine and good times here, make no mistake. Nope, youth coaching involves a lot of difficult conversations, tough decisions and tensions to untangle. As such, you’re going to need a clear, reasonable approach to disputes because a huge part of your role is helping to mediate and meditate over conflicts which may emerge in your mentee’s life. Providing balanced, impartial and ultimately useful advice is one of your key responsibilities; don’t shy away from it.

FLEXIBILITY

Nothing is black and white in this life, particularly when teenagers are mentioned. What might seem like the perfect guidance one day might not work in quite the same way the next. Everyone is unique, with their own set of goals and grievances, and as such, your flexibility is crucial to eek with best out of every one of your mentees along their journey.

5 IDEAL PLACES TO CELEBRATE OKTOBERFEST IN LONDON THIS YEAR

Oktoberfest; everyone’s heard of it right? Perhaps you’ve even been lucky enough to attend this two week extravaganza of beers, bratwurst and Bavaria. But if you haven’t, fear not; you don’t actually need to board a plane to Germany to experience the festival up close and personal – London now offers plenty of places to celebrate the annual Bavarian beer festival in style. These are those; our 5 IDEAL places to celebrate Oktoberfest in London this year.

OKTOBERFEST PUB

Perhaps channeling the most authentic Oktoberfest feeling in town, the Octoberfest Pub offers a slice of Bavaria all year round but things get especially rowdy at this time of year, as you’d hope for a pub with that name. Offering more than 60 imported German beers and proper Bavarian comfort food – our favourites include the white veal sausage ‘weisswurst’ and the famous ‘schweinshaxe’ pork knuckle – the celebrations get ramped up from September until December to take in both the festival and the run up to Christmas which this part of the world does so well.

OKTOBERFEST AT POP BRIXTON

Back by popular demand and taking place over two fun-filled weekends, Pop Brixton welcomes guests with a hefty dose of steins and nibbles from the world of wurst  – even offering vegan bratwursts and vegetarian schnitzels for those who balk at that much pork. Dancing on the tables isn’t obligatory, but you certainly won’t be turfed out for doing so.

KATZENJAMMERS

Located next to Borough market, Katzenjammers is perhaps our favourite Bavarian bar.  An all year round affair, its vaulted basement plays home to a bierhall with all the singing, dancing and games which that title entails. There are nine draught biers to choose from, served in the requisite steins of course, and plenty of bottled biers too if that all gets a little heavy for you. This place also showcases a selection of German Austiran wines, too.

CAMDEN’S OFFICIAL OKTOBERFEST

The official Camden Oktoberfest is one of the largest celebrations of its kind in London, welcoming thousands of lederhosen lovers each year for the mayhem. This year they’re partnering up with Herman Ze German as the exclusive food partner, and we’re certainly here for their awesome currywurst. Expect to see Camden’s Electric Ballroom transformed into a traditional Bavarian beer hall, complete with long wood tables and bunting. Music is by The Old Dirty Brasstards, a 10 piece drum and brass band playing oompah favorites.

OR WHY NOT HOST YOUR OWN?

If the autumn weather is putting you off travelling (and we don’t blame you; it’s getting pretty windy out there) then why not throw your own Bavarian bonanza? Traditionally held outside, consider creating your own beer tent in your back garden for this one. Ideally you’ll need a long, single unit wooden table, but fold away tables with blue and white (the Bavarian flag colours) checked table cloths will suffice.

Must have foods include pretzel and weisswurst with sweet mustard. When it comes to beer, try and get your hands on a German brew, and remember that stein glasses are pretty much compulsory. If you do run out of beer (you will run out of beer), no problem; Drinks House 247, who take orders for alcohol delivery late by phone or via their website, can bring reinforcements. They deliver across the main parts of London and offer a life-saving collection of beers, spirits, ciders, and even cigarettes. When you’re running dry and don’t want to go outside, they’re ideal

5 IDEAL WAYS TO UPDATE YOUR KITCHEN WITHOUT RENOVATING

5 IDEAL WAYS TO UPDATE YOUR KITCHEN WITHOUT RENOVATING

You know what they say, that home is where the heart is? Well, let’s get more specific; the beating atrium of any home, where nourishment is prepared, stories shared, and the lifeblood of the family lives, is of course the kitchen. But where once this was a largely functional space, with the emphasis on performance and purpose, now kitchens are seen as the hub of socialising, relaxing, working, and everything in between.

Because the demands on the space are so varied and heavy, the kitchen needs to be flexible and accommodating. If you’ve recently found yourself looking around that room thinking it needs a makeover, then fear not; it needn’t take heaps of time and money to bring a freshness and new sense of life. Instead, follow these; our 5 IDEAL ways to update your kitchen without renovating.

INTRODUCE OPEN PLAN SHELVING

Creating more space, or the illusion of it, is perhaps the greatest way to freshen up your kitchen, or any room in your house for that matter. So, if you want to make your kitchen appear larger than it is, whilst in the process adding a little visual intrigue, then you should introduce open plan shelving.

This works in two ways. Firstly, it provides you with an opportunity to show off any fancy plates, bowls or crockery you might have (as well as those beginner’s pickles and lacto ferments you’re experimenting with). Secondly, the functionality of your kitchen is improved, with items easier to reach. No more fumbling at the back of a cupboard or standing on tiptoes while you try to reach (and often drop) your favourite cup. The overall effect is of a room refurbished and updated.

H2OVERHAUL

Visualise the word ‘fresh’ and tell us what you see. Go on, it was something related to water, right? Indeed, the ol’ Adam’s Ale is synonymous with a sense of the new, clean and pristine, so channel this energy by giving your water supply an overhaul. We’re particularly fond of the addition of a water cooler dispenser, as this generates a sense of the modern, aesthetically. Read this page for a rundown of the best currently on the market.

Or, if your kitchen doesn’t quite have the room to accommodate such an addition, but you still want the filtered stuff, then an under the sink – out of the way but very much in control – filter is a good shout. Again, it’s prudent to do a little online comparison first; visit kitchenfaucets.reviews today for a look at 2019’s best options. Should this all be a tad too literal, then you could convey the energy of water via art instead.

ACCESSORISE IN COLOUR

A lick of paint will bring that ‘updated’ feel to any room, make no mistake, but if you aren’t confident about painting the walls and are fearful of the amount of overhaul it requires, then bringing colour via kitchen accessories is a simple way to add vibrancy. These hint at individualism and self expression without going the whole hog and ruining the kitchen’s colourscape.

What accessories, we hear you ask. Well, start with something inexpensive but always on show, such as colourful tea towels, oven gloves and a few pots to keep your utensils in. This can really brighten up your space without being too overbearing. You could even recover or replace the cushions on your dining room chairs to bring that feel of the fresh in permanently.

LET THERE BE LIGHT

See your kitchen in a new light – literally – by bidding adieu to stark, overhead lighting in favour of something more nuanced and varied. Recent interior design trends dictate that multiple fixtures scattered in strategic positions is in, replacing just one overbearing light. This helps you draw focus on different areas, such as by angling lights towards the cupboards and walls of the kitchen, reflecting light back into the room and giving the illusion of more space.

Equally effective is ensuring your bulbs have a colour rendition index of over 90, culminating in a warm and cosy light. Even consider dimmers, which can set a romantic ambiance off in the evening but help you wake up with a brighter shade at breakfast time.

GO GREEN

You could, and should, take this tip two ways. Firstly, adding plants and cut flowers to your kitchen is a great way to liven up the space and emphasise that fresh, natural feel synonymous with great food as well as ambience. The best bit? It won’t cost much. Go one step further and place them in bright pots and vases for extra style points (though don’t overdo it or you’ll be advising guests to bring sunglasses on their next visit). And remember that open plan shelving we mentioned all that time ago at the top? Placing plants amongst your other crockery here will banish any sense of staleness from proceedings.

More importantly, ‘going green’ in the sense of keeping your waste disposal down, adding recycling bins, banishing plastic in favour of beeswax and brown paper and growing your own herbs in the kitchen, is another way to bring a fresh frame of mind and mentality to your kitchen. The fact you’re helping the environment is more than just an added bonus.

5 IDEAL WAYS TO TAKE THE HASSLE OUT OF CLEANING

News just in; cleaning doesn’t have to be a chore. And how happy we are to hear it. Please elaborate, we hear you plead. Well, with the right attitude, tools and tips you can actually make it not only painless but, whisper it, a little fun too. Yep, unless tidying and cleaning is your passion (no judgment here) and you simply love to take your time over a good spit’n’polish, then we’re sure you’re looking for ways to take the hassle out of cleaning. We’re here to help, with these; our 5 IDEAL ways to take the hassle out of cleaning.

GET TASK SPECIFIC GADGETS

First things first, you need to view the purchase of some decent cleaning equipment as an investment. Cleaning is an inevitable part of life and you’re going to be spending a lot of time doing it. So, take the hassle out of it, increase efficiency and reduce unnecessary time wasted by investing in the right tools for the task.

When it comes to vacuum cleaners, as discussed on Squiffyclean.com, you need to get the right type to do the best shop. The best vacuums for rugs have a roller brush to agitate fibres and you need to take into account whether your rugs are low or high pile. And if you’re vacuuming bare floors, you should look into one that allows you to turn off the beater brush. If you own a pet and need to clean up pet hair, consider getting one with specifically designed boosted suction power – you can find more details on the best vacuum cleaners for pets via the previous link.

REFRAME HOW YOU THINK OF IT

A valuable tip for many of life’s responsibilities, this. If you view cleaning as a massive chore then inevitably it’s going to be viewed as an obstacle, too; something to resent, procrastinate and then abandon. However, if you reframe the way you look at cleaning, it can become a valuable part of the week. Use it as time to put on that podcast you’ve been meaning to listen to or that album you haven’t got round to enjoying yet. Or, think of it as exercise; when cleaning is done right, it’s said to burn 90 calories every quarter of an hour. Once you embrace the time spent with mop, bucket or brush as valuable, you’ll find it hangs over you far less.

HAVE A PLAN

Break things up into smaller tasks. Do the dusting one day, hoovering the next and polishing the mirrors another. By breaking things up, cleaning will become more manageable, and less burdensome physically and mentally. Indeed, by completing one chore throughout the entire house, otherwise known as ‘task cleaning’, before starting another the next day, things feel way faster and more efficient. This is because you’re focusing all of your attention on just one chore instead of getting distracted by lots of different areas that need cleaning and never quite completing a task to the best of your ability.

DEVELOP GOOD HABITS

How many times have you let the dishes pile up until flies stalk the sink? It’s all too easy for cleaning to go from a minor inconvenience to a major undertaking when this is a regular occurrence. Little and often should be your mantra, to maintain the cleanliness of your home in the most efficient way possible. Indeed, it’s easy to quickly turn the house upside down but by being proactive and getting into the habit of getting stuff done straight away, you’ll eliminate the need for any deep clean at all.

So, make your bed in the morning, clean the dishes straight away, put things back as soon as you use them or take a few extra minutes to wipe tabletops down properly after each use. In doing so, you’ll find your house is cleaner, tasks more manageable and a build-up until the cleaning is untackleable is a thing of the past.

DECLUTTER

Never underestimate the power of a good declutter. If you have stuff piled up everywhere that you have to move every time you clean, it’s going to get annoying, there’s no doubt about that. And, efficiency will inevitably suffer. Yep, clutter is a physical barrier to getting stuff done in terms of cleaning your home but it’s also a mental one; with stuff everywhere, you may deem the task too strenuous to even start. Having a good old fashioned clear out and deploying some clever storage solutions will help you make easy work out of cleaning.

4 IDEAL ECO-FRIENDLY WAYS TO CLEAN YOUR HOME INCLUDING A STEAM CLEANER

The rain is pounding, the wind is whistling and the sun, well…what was that again? We may as well look for reasons to be cheerful. Here’s one; with the arrival of cooler verging on cold weather and darker nights, we’ll all be spending more time indoors. That means an excuse for hot toddies, duvet days and long, languid Netflix nights. With the domestic space getting its dues, you’re going to need to get it war-ready, and that starts with a lean, green deep clean.

Sofia Martinez, cleaning expert and CEO of Sparkly Maid San Antonio, says this is the perfect time to give your home a proper reset using simple, eco-friendly methods. With that in mind, here are 4 IDEAL eco-friendly ways to clean your home. With that in mind, here are 4 IDEAL eco-friendly ways to clean your home.

TURN TO ECO-FRIENDLY BRANDS

Conventional cleaning products can have an impact on our health and on the environment, make no mistake. Fortunately, to compete for that coveted place under your kitchen sink, more brands are focusing on developing effective cleaning products which have a green edge.

Don’t be tricked by branding which deploys green leaves and the like; this is most likely a cynical attempt to lure in those with only a passing knowledge of their environmental impact. Instead, go deep into the labelling; you’re looking for ‘non toxic’, ‘organic’ or ‘plant based’ at the very least. If you care to cast your research net a little further, then investigate the Environmental Working Group’s ranking of cleaning products according to their impact.

MAKE YOUR OWN

If you’re looking to greenify your cleaning in a more DIY manner, then your larder may hold the answer. First, look to lemons – nature’s answer to cleaning products – as they have powerful antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Keep delving into the cupboards; vinegar and baking soda will clean just about anything. Simply mix them with warm water and voila; an all-purpose cleaner is made. Mind you, they don’t smell as good as lemons. Baking soda is also a great odour eliminator, so keep some in your fridge to remove pervasive aromas and sprinkle it on your carpet before you vacuum to soak up bad smells.

STEAM-CLEAN

Steam cleaners not only make cleaning easier, but they also help in disinfecting and sanitising your home without using harsh chemicals. Indeed, using steam vapour in cleaning has been happening for over 30 years, working by boiling water to produce steam for cleaning floors and other surfaces. The steam then lifts dirt and grease.

This way of cleaning represents an ecological solution (no chemicals, obvs) and is ideal for keeping your home in good shape without the use of toxic chemicals from commercial cleaning detergents. Using a steam cleaner is particularly appropriate for homes with hard floors, vinyl or wood but is also good for carpet, curtain and upholstery cleaning.

KEEP THINGS VENTILATED

Perhaps more importantly than any other tip, but also the most simple and easy to do, is to keep your home well ventilated. By simply popping the windows open regularly, you’ll be lessening the need for fans in the warmer months, as well as dehumidifiers, extractor fans for when you’re cooking, and chemical-laden air fresheners, too. Do a weekly ventilate of all the windows in your home for best results.

5 IDEAL WAYS TO TURN YOUR HOUSE INTO A SOCIAL HUB

We think it’s fair to surmise that there are two types of people in this world. In column A, there are those whose home is a castle with the drawbridge very much pulled up. In B, the door is open, the music loud and the refreshments never ending. We know which we’d rather be.

If you, too, would like to fall into the latter camp, and earn the title of ‘host(ess) with the mostest’, then there are a few simple additions and alterations you can make to the domestic space to bring people in, and keep them there and happy. These are those; our 5 IDEAL ways to turn your house into a social hub.

INSTALL A BAR

Let’s not beat around the bush; a certain amount of ‘turning your house into a social hub’ is referring to throwing a damn good party. And, to throw one, you need to throw down with the drinks. To make a statement of serious intent, and to offer a focal point to the socialising, then you should consider installing a bar.

At the very least, some drinks fridges for beers and wines, optics for spirits and a little bar seating is the only commitment really required to turn your space into something truly inviting for the barflies (or friends). Shelving and, of course, an actual ‘bar’ is also going to be essential, but it’s worth it; this investment is sure to make your pad the place to be.

HAVE A WELL STOCKED LARDER

If friends and family are going to drop by without warning (you don’t phone the local pub before arriving, after all) then it’s important to be stocked up with some snacks at all times. Hunger and happy punters simply don’t mix. At the very least, stock your fridge with hard cheeses and chutneys that last for months, and always have crisps, nuts and other bar snacks on hand in the house. A freezer full of frozen pizzas and other ready-to-heat goods will go even further in satisfying your guests’ hunger.

GAMIFY

If you’re aiming for elite-level hosting, then entertainment options should stretch beyond bevvies and beats. If you have the space, then turning part of your house into a game’s room is sure to cement your social hub offering. People love to gather round a table when mixing party and play; it feels casual and convivial, and encourages chat and fun rather than competitiveness. A pool table is the dream, but takes up serious real estate, so instead consider something more manageable, such as a ping pong table. All you need apart from the surface is net, bats and ball; check out more details on Gameroom.reviews for a useful comparison of the latter. Also perennially popular is foosball, which only requires the actual unit itself. Again, thorough complete details on Gameroom.reviews will point you in the direction of the best buys currently on the market.

A PROPER SOUND SYSTEM

What makes the party pop? Aside from bottles and balls, it’s got to be music; the more crisp and immersive, the better. So, consider an investment in a speaker system with Bluetooth capabilities. At the top end of the price range is a Naim Muso system. At £1299, it ain’t cheap, but you really do get what you pay for; a seriously clear, enigmatic sound which you simply can’t ignore. Aesthetically, they’re awfully pleasing too; a brutal, black slab which announces it’s a serious bit of kit before the first chords of your party playlist have even chimed.

For audiophiles who prioritise affordability, the Audio Pro Addon T series come in at around the £100 mark and offer great clarity in terms of sound quality. Invest a little more, in a couple of their C series speakers, (around £250 each) and you have multi room capabilities; perfect for a party intent on sprawling, we think.

PREPARE FOR OVERNIGHT GUESTS

A true testament to your house’s social hub capabilities is the fact people may never want to leave. The old ‘just one more’ chorus ringing out all night basically means you’ve made it. But this also means you need to have a contingency plan in place for those who decide they’re not ready to head home when the evening ends.

Let’s face it, ‘crashing’ on the sofa is for university students, and top to tailing in bed works for neither party. Instead, invest in a sofa bed which can be called upon when visitors need a good night of Zzzs. They’re also great for saving space in the home, not requiring a whole bedroom to be devoted to hosting guests, and also not taking up the same space a bed does.

It’s always a good idea to have a couple of reserve sets of sheets around for guests, as well as towels. There’s nothing better than a hot shower the morning after the night before, to wash away the ills of the previous evening’s play. Perhaps the most vital, though, is having a few Berocca and paracetamol in; sore heads mean it was a good night, right?
