5 IDEAL TECH SURVIVAL TIPS FOR DIGITAL NOMADS

For those whose work life takes place entirely in the on-the-go office, the struggle will be familiar. Strung out on espresso for more wifi codes, cursing the Airbnb apartment’s internet at every buffer, caressing your laptop like a baby for fear of damage; it can feel like the digital nomad dream is forever hanging precariously in the balance.

Every precaution is necessary to protect this brittle situation. Because if one card is removed, the house comes tumbling down. With everything pinned on fully functioning technology, it’s better to be safe than sorry. With that in mind, here are 5 IDEAL tech survival tips for digital nomads.

BUY A CHEAP BACK UP LAPTOP

Sometimes you’ve got the speculate to accumulate. Though the initial outlay on a backup laptop may put your monthly budget off-kilter, the promise of protection it offers is definitely worth the investment. Because when (that’s when) your primary device goes down, you’re going to need an immediate substitute to keep your work in motion. Laptops can take an unpredictably long while to get fixed abroad, yet you have to keep your own money making machine running. There’s no regular income of a boring ol’ nine to five here.

Best to have a backup then, even if it’s just a cheap-as-chips model. Asus do a host of reliable-enough tablet/laptop hybrids at around the £200 mark, and honestly, that’s money well spent in the long run.

BACKUP YOUR WEBSITE & FILES

Best to have a backup, then. Such sage words they bear repeating. True for tangible devices, as above, and also very damn true for your precious, precarious digital world. If you run your own website or blog, you should back up the whole thing, as often as daily, or at least ask your host to do so. You should give any important files the same treatment. Digital safety nets are so important when living the transient life of the digital nomad.

There are several ways to keep things secure; you should always travel with an external hard drive, as well as making use of the cloud or dropbox to manually keep files existing in the ether.

OPTIMISE YOUR HARD DRIVE

Potentially as damaging as a broken laptop is an operating system running at a slow, stuttering pace. Time is money for the digital nomad, and time spent staring at a rotating, rainbow coloured beach ball is time spent not earning money. Simply grinning and bearing it will be costing you big time.

Best, then, to optimise your computer’s hard drive to make sure everything is running at full potential. The best software for this in our view is Macpaw’s Clean My Mac, which can now be used for Windows, too. It has facilities to streamline your hard drive, as well as serving as anti-virus software, which offers vital added protection. A must.

HAVE A MOUSE & KEYBOARD

Back to basics with this one, but a necessary mention while we’re talking about optimising your systems. You’d be surprised at just how much time is wasted (and therefore, money made) by fiddling about on an unresponsive touchpad mouse and less than ergonomic laptop keyboard.

You want to do everything in your power to make things run smoothly and efficiently. So, get yourself an external mouse which glides, highlights and clicks with precision; the wireless, Bluetooth ones are particularly good for working in a cafe, as space is often at a premium. An external keyboard with bigger keys to aim for, a more manageable layout and better angle for your wrists is another purchase which makes a real difference in the long run.

OVERSEAS PHONE CONTRACT

Being in thrall to a wifi connection overseas which is as unpredictable as it is unreliable is a stressful state to be in when access to the web determines your paycheck. Another prudent investment, then, is a short-term, traveller’s sim card and phone contract containing unlimited 4G. In several digital nomad hotspots like Chiang Mai, Bali, Beirut and Taipei, such a contract won’t cost you much more than a tenner a month. Well worth it, we think, as you can hotspot and, as such, always have backup internet access at hand.

4 IDEAL QUESTIONS TO ASK IF YOU’RE PLANNING TO RETIRE ABROAD

The possibilities are endless once you’ve retired. You’ve worked all your life to now enjoy your golden years doing, well, whatever you want to do. Allotments, grandchildren, ever more frequent breaks in the sun. Yep, retirement should be a time of happiness, peace and prosperity.

And for many, that simply doesn’t marry to the drizzle and dreariness of Britain. Nope, the sepia, sun soaked tones of the continent and beyond beckon. From your state pension to healthcare options overseas, with the help of stair lift supplier Acorn Stairlifts, here are 4 IDEAL questions to ask if you’re planning to retire abroad.

HOW WILL MOVING ABROAD AFFECT YOUR STATE PENSION?

If you are eligible for the new state pension, you’ll currently receive £168.60 every week. This amount increases each year to reflect the ‘triple lock’ of inflation, 2.5 per cent, or average earnings. If you choose to leave the UK to retire abroad, however, your state pension amount can be frozen. In this instance, the figure will not increase each year in line with the triple-lock policy — you’ll continue to receive the amount it was set out when you left. And that could mean you miss out on some serious coin.

ThisIsMoney highlights the impact this can have on your funds: in 2000, the state pension was £67.50 per week. For expats who retired in 2000, they are still receiving £67.50 per week instead of the current rate of £168.60 per week.

There are a few exceptions to this rule, however. Your state pension will usually increase each year if you retire to: the EEA, Gibraltar, Switzerland, USA, Turkey, Barbados, Bermuda, Serbia, the Philippines, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Mauritius, Jersey, Guernsey, Macedonia, Kosovo, the Isle of Man, Israel, or Jamaica. Food for thought, indeed.

WILL I HAVE TO SAME LEVELS OF PERSONAL COMFORT?

You need to think carefully about your reasons for wanting to retire and move abroad. Better weather is nice, sure, but it won’t be enough to help you stay and set roots properly in a new country and call it home. There needs to be more there to truly tempt you away. Indeed, you should think carefully about what you’ll be leaving behind — will it be easy to come back to visit family and friends in the UK? Will you get homesick? Will the change in pattern and routine put a smile on your face, or would you miss your usual everyday life?

Then of course, you need to consider the difference in climate (of course sunshine is nice, but if you burn easily, you might be sick of it after a few weeks!), the living costs associated with that country, and even something as basic as the cuisine! If you enjoy change and embrace a challenge, then fantastic, but if you find comfort in routine and familiarity, you might want to reappraise.

AND WHAT ABOUT MY HEALTH?

In the UK, we’re incredibly lucky to enjoy free healthcare from the NHS; so incredibly fortunate, indeed. But this isn’t a benefit you’ll get anywhere around the world. Retiring to a country like the USA or South Africa might end up being very pricey if you rely on the health service heavily. And as you’re retiring age, regrettably, health issues are likely to become more prevalent.

If you’re looking to retire somewhere with a similar healthcare system as the UK, take a look at Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, instead.

FINALLY, THE BIGGEST QUESTION: WHERE?

As a snapshot of three possible places, one European and warm, one European and cool, and one further flung, here’s an interesting breakdown to mull over:

Spain

State pension freeze? No
Universal healthcare? Yes
Travel back to the UK: 2–3-hour flight

A popular tourist destination for many Brits, Spain is a fantastic choice for retired expats. Beyond the obvious sun, sea, and sand, the local food is relatively inexpensive too, making food costs simple. If you prefer it a little cooler, the northern part of the country might be best for you.

With universal healthcare and your state pension not freezing, this is the closest you’ll get to the UK without being in the UK.

You’ll want to learn enough Spanish to get by — after all, if you’re going to live in another country, you should at least be able to speak the language well enough to be understood. Luckily, the language is considered one of the easiest for English speakers to pick up!

Malaysia

State pension freeze? Yes
Universal healthcare? Yes
Travel back to the UK: 12–14-hour flight

If you’re happy to live much further afield from your native homeland, Malaysia could be one to explore as your retirement dream. You’ll have all the beaches and rainforests you could possibly need to bathe yourself in nature, while also enjoying the benefit of Malaysian law being based on the British system — road signs are in English and Malay.

Switzerland

State pension freeze? No
Universal healthcare? Yes
Travel back to the UK: 2-hour flight

Switzerland is one of the countries you can retire to without your state pension freezing, meaning you’ll still see the increase of your pension each year. Of course, there’s the world-renowned Swiss healthcare system to further entice your choice to retire here! If you’re the outdoorsy type, you’ll love all Switzerland has to offer on its doorstep.

The UK is blessed with a wide network of tiny country lanes and off-road routes that provide perfect playgrounds for budding off-roaders.

So, whether you’re an experienced petrol head or it’s the start of a new hobby, we’ve teamed up with Grange vehicles, who stock used Mclarens, to give you 3 IDEAL off-roading uk holiday hotspots.

ULTRA ADVENTURE DRIVING

Ultra Adventure Driving is located in Wales, close to some very impressive mountains such as Snowdonia. These provide the perfect, dramatic backdrop to the site’s two purpose-built off-roading sites. The sites are catered to individual skill levels, so you’ll never feel out of your depth and with waterways, steep climbs and plenty of mud, you’ll be in for a real off-road adventure!

ATV rentals are also available, for those looking for an even more adventurous experience.

SILVERSTONE OFF-ROAD EXPERIENCE

Silverstone is already famous for its driving tracks (and of course, as being the host of an annual Formula One event) but it isn’t usually considered as an off-road hotspot. Luckily, there is a purpose-built area dedicated to the off-road experience, offering a variety of obstacles and unique driving challenges. The experience can also be tailored to suit your needs, so don’t worry if you’re not an expert. You can also opt to receive one on one guidance from an experienced instructor as you attempt to tackle five different challenges. The racing is here is a real pulse, make no mistake.

WILD TRACKS

If you like a bit of mud (who doesn’t?), then the Wild Tracks off-road circuit in Suffolk is the perfect choice for you. With three tracks available, the most famous of which is the sandy Chippenham track, there’s something to suit every need here.

Obstacles include deep sandy soil and a large watering hole (filed with mud, of course). There’s even an outdoor go-karting track for the kids. Due to its popularity it can get quite busy during the summer, so be sure to book well in advance if you plan on going. You’ll be happy as a pig in, erm, mud.

5 IDEAL WAYS TO INCORPORATE PETS INTO YOUR WEDDING DAY

We all know that marriage lives longest with compromise. Everyone has their own set of weird quirks, odd preferences and challenging habits needing to be tolerated if the holy union is to survive. But you know who’s not judging you for your strangest, most irritating behaviour? Whose love is truly unrequited? Yep, you guessed it (from the title perhaps), we’re talking about your pet. As such, we wouldn’t blame you for wanting to include that furry friend in your wedding day.

Whether you choose a llama to ride into the venue, or get your favourite pooch to confirm yours and your partner’s love by acting as a ring bearer, having animals at your wedding day can add a truly unique touch to the occasion. With the help of Lake District Country Hotels, who provide wedding venues in Cumbria, here are 5 IDEAL ways to incorporate animals into your wedding day.

I COME BEARING RINGS

All across the land, dogs and cats have become an essential element for animal-loving couples looking to say, ‘I do’. Often, this is expressed via their four-legged friends acting as wedding ring bearers. Some couples even choose to get their beloved felines and pooches dressed up, with replica bridesmaid dresses and suits becoming a popular novelty for couples who just can’t bear the thought of leaving their companions at home or in the kennels. Of course, always check with the advice of animal welfare experts before bestowing such responsibility on your pet.

WALKIES DOWN THE AISLE

If bearing the ring might be too much for your furry friend to (ahem) bear, then why not allow a more freeform expression of your commitment, by allowing your pet to roam down the aisle behind you. Should their temperament be on the shyer end of the spectrum, perhaps a best man, bridesmaid or the figure you’ve chosen to give you away could bring the animal along in their arms for the ride. Either way, we’re sure your pet will love being included (and relish all that extra attention!).

GIVE YOUR WEDDING GIFT TO AN ANIMAL CHARITY

Buying wedding gifts for a couple is so passé. These days, most newlyweds live together before they get married so they already have the traditional wedding list items like a kettle, toaster and lots of cutlery. Of course, you can use your gift list to upgrade to a better toaster or to donate to your honeymoon – but bear in mind your wedding could already be costing your guests a small fortune if they have to pay for travel, accommodation and a new outfit.

There are, however, some gifts people are more than happy to give. An increasing number of couples are including a charity of their choice as the focal point of their wedding themes. Their idea is to arrange for charity registries that let the guests make a donation to a noble cause instead of giving gifts to the couple. This, again, is a unique idea that makes the wedding memorable not only for the couple but also for the cause they support. If the happy couple are animal lovers, then the choice of charity writes itself.

HOST YOUR WEDDING AT A FARM

Some couples may even choose to make their venue an animal haven, by choosing animal sanctuaries or petting farms as the venue for their big day. By doing so, you can enjoy having a whole host of fluffy friends, from micro pigs to lambs and more, as wedding guests. The big day’s photos will be suitably cute as a result! Just make sure to check if the animals are tolerant of the noise, hustle and bustle which the later hours of a wedding usually involve.

LET YOUR GUESTS BRING THEIR DOGS

Instead of your guests putting their pups in a kennel for the duration of a wedding or having the hassle of finding an expensive dogsitter, make your wedding a dog-friendly one. Hire a professional to look after your fluffy friends on the day and take them for walks. You could even create a dog-friendly menu full of canine favourites and doggy treats for a real tail-wagging celebration.

5 IDEAL WAYS TO ACHIEVE A FASHIONABLE YET UNIQUE WARDROBE

What makes a wardrobe fashionable? Which key components are required before a person is deemed trendy? It can be a surprisingly tricky thing to tie down. We’ll try. Start with something timeless, cast a curt nod to the classical, throw in your own individual style, give it a little quirky, notch it up something modern, and you might be getting close. And then, to truly stand out, that ever elusive ‘je ne sais quoi’ is needed. You might find it with these; our 5 IDEAL ways to achieve a fashionable yet unique wardrobe.

NAIL YOUR PERSONAL BRAND

Whether you’re influenced by vintage looks, classic silhouettes or haute couture, it’s your own personal take on things which matters most. Indeed, staying true to yourself and what inspires you is the most fashionable statement you could possibly make.

This is perhaps most keenly realised by keeping your unique style as a foundation and adapting and shapeshifting to the trends of the season to keep things fresh. Adding pops of colour to your more muted base style is another great way to stay looking on point. A simple scarf or pair of socks in the colour of the season can be a subtle statement without looking like you’re simply towing the trendy line in sycophantic style.

FOLLOW FASHION WEEK AND DESIGNER COLLABORATIONS

For aficionados of all things haute-couture, keeping your eye on Paris, Milan and London Fashion week allows you to keep well ahead of the curve. This is where the most on-trend styles first emerge, so follow them religiously. The subsequent collaborations between designer and high street are a fabulous way to indulge your inner fashionista at a fraction of the cost of the more expensive brand’s latest collection. Recently, Rick Owens has done a particularly eye-catching collaboration with Adidas. You can check the collection out here for your latest dose of sneakers, boots, glasses, sweaters and more. Can you feel your fashion senses tingling?

READ FASHION MAGAZINES AND FOLLOW INFLUENCERS

If you’re in the dark about the latest fashions, then fortunately, it’s fairly easy to get in the know. By reading industry magazines and analysing websites that shine a light on what the trendiest people are wearing, right now, you’ll get the picture pretty quickly. Vouge, otherwise known as the Bible to fashionistas, is a good place to start.  Even if the styles seem a little far fetched and the flourishes expensive, it’s good to have a baseline to work from. You’ll be able to incorporate your own, unique style with what’s hot right now and reach a compromise with your wardrobe in the process.

And while the ‘influencer’ has become somewhat of a dirty word – omnipresent, otiose and insistent – they can actually provide plenty of inspiration about what’s hot right now, and what’s not. Indeed, the beauty of Instagram is that you can choose whose style you genuinely admire and only follow them. Be discerning but inquisitive; like and engage with stylish sorts who seem on the bleeding edge of cool, if that’s where you want to be. Treat celebrities who are lucky enough to earn your follow in the same way; don’t saturate your feed with the banal and inane.

REDUCE YOUR FASHION FOOTPRINT

It’s not fashionable to ruin the environment, that’s for sure. Sweaty, burnt and with little time left; that doesn’t sound too trendy, now does it? With the fashion industry being the world’s second largest polluter, only behind oil, with harmful production practices at the top and unsustainable shopping habits on the high street, it’s vital to reevaluate your relationship with shopping. Right. Now.

Textile production requires huge amounts of water and energy to meet demand, producing 1.2 billion tonnes of  CO2 equivalent per year; more than international flights and maritime shipping. Troubling enough, but what’s worse is that it’s predicted that the manufacture of clothes will account for a quarter of the world’s carbon budget by 2050. fast fashion, where clothing has become a single-use purchase, destined for landfill after just one wear. So, shop sustainably and considerately at all times, or there won’t be a world left to admire your unique style.

INVEST IN CLASSIC ITEMS

You don’t have to throw out your entire wardrobe every season to stay up to date with the latest fashion trends. Keeping your staple basics and updating them with a few fashion-forward items is the ideal way to stay on trend without rewriting the rulebook with every passing month.

As a firm foundation, keep the following ten items in your wardrobe all year round and replace them when they have worn out;

  • Different denim jeans. The perfect fit for all occasions and never out of style.
  • Basic plain t-shirts. T-shirts will always stay in style, the perfect basic item to accessorise.
  • Floppy hats. Sun damage is never fashionable.
  • Little black dress. Perfect for any occasion to dress up or down.
  • Proper undergarments. Undergarments should be good quality and comfortable.
  • Trench coat. No matter the weather, you are covered.
  • Plain button up blouse. Not too tight and not too baggy.
  • A bag for every occasion. A clutch bag, tote bag and handbag.
  • Classic sunglasses. Black and oversized suit everyone.
  • Leather jacket. Classic staple.

5 HOLIDAYS IDEAL FOR RISK TAKERS

Reclining on the sand, restoring that tan, re-reading your favourite book…sounds like bliss, huh? Well, it might surprise you, that such a holiday isn’t, in fact, music to everyone’s ears. Nope, such a louche, low and lazy trip can be pretty discordant for some. Because for an ever increasing number, it’s thrills, spills and near kills we want from our time off.

It’s no surprise really, is it? We spend so long tied to our desks, the hoover or our bed (nope, not in that way), that when we have the chance, it’s best to make the most of it. How? Well, by raising the adrenaline and the hair, of course. Here’s how, our 5 holidays IDEAL for risk takers.

BIKING THROUGH MOROCCO

When many people think of a cycling holiday, the default route is a section of the Tour de France. As a famous cycling route that takes in so many exceptional vistas and passes landmark locations (and fresh in the memory from its recent residency on ITV), it is the mecca for cyclists, make no mistake.

But for those wanting something a little bit (well, a whole lotta) different, cycling through the Atlas Mountains certainly serves up a dose of the thrilling stuff. The path encompasses both desert and mountain terrain, with the opportunity for rock climbing in the gorges – and the high-altitude cycling will really get your adrenaline flowing. If the scenery doesn’t get you, then the erratically driven taxis certainly will.

In all seriousness, Morocco provides the perfect escape for anyone wanting to travel outside of the summer months. The unique climate around Marrakech means that you’ll be able to see both snow-covered mountains and dry, dusty deserts all in one day. Though the trip on two wheels is the reason you came, be sure not to leave without enjoying a couple of days in this iconic city; a veritable, vibrant feast of culture, cuisine and chaos. Ride the Kasbah, indeed.

RAFTING ON THE RIVER LIFFEY

What better way to experience Ireland’s famous river Liffey than at first hand, with paddle and raft? Negotiating the seemingly tranquil river isn’t at first glance the most fast paced adventure activity available in the country, but it’s an eye opening look at Dublin at close quarters.

It actually provides some pretty hairy, hair raising moments along the way, too, particularly along the four artificial weirs which make up most routes, where the drops are sharp and the risk of a headfirst plunge into cold water pretty high if you don’t have your wits (and oar skills) about you. There’s also the chance for a bit of wildlife spotting, although the likelihood of seeing another dolphin, such as happened at the tail end of last year, is slim.

FOR MODERN COWBOYS

The Wild West of America has been much romanticised over the years, with film and TV shows depicting the struggle of the settlers trying to make new lives in inhospitable climes. In reality, life for the cowboys was hard and lonely, with much of the day spent on horseback protecting livestock or riding the trails between traders.

But if you want to relive the stereotypical life, rather than the daily drudgery, of a cowboy, with all the glam it entailed – Old Town Road, we’re looking at you – then there are tonnes of ways to reimagine it for the modern age. Retiring the horses in favour of modern transportation, risk-taking holidaymakers can now travel the old trails on off-road motorbikes or Ford Broncos, taking in the scenery without the discomfort of saddle sores.

Most do so in Yellowstone National Park, which straddles the three states of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Though it’s the wild life you’re here for, if it’s wildlife you’re also after, then you’ll find a diverse range of American icons here; grizzly bears, elks, bison, and most emblematic of all, bald eagles.

ADRENALINE JUNKIES IN THE JUNGLE

Fancy seeing the temples and artefacts of Mayan culture in Meixco? Though the majority head to spectacular (and spectacularly busy) Chichen Itza, in the Yucatan state, how about instead zip-lining into them from jungle treetops, at night, by firelight?

That hair raising enough for ya? Or maybe you’d prefer driving miniature 4×4 vehicles around the jungle floor, abseiling into underground cenotes and snorkelling with turtles? Well, all of these activities and more are available at the Xplor park (in the same state), one of a handful of eco-parks aimed at giving tourists unforgettable experiences of the local landscape, history and culture, with a little thrill-seeking thrown in for good measure.

When you’ve had enough of the jungle, head to the Yucatan’s incredible coast, just a ten minute drive. Here, you’ll find snorkelling and diving opportunities aplenty. The finest water sports are a short ferry ride away, on the island of Cozumel. We’ve written more about that and other great Caribbean island destinations over here; check it out!

HIGH ALTITUDE HOLIDAYING

Mountain climbing is one of the most physically demanding sporting activities out there, and one not for the faint-hearted, that’s for certain. But the reward of dominating a peak and reaching the top feels like nothing else on earth. And that’s before you consider the views. Once you’ve caught your breath, prepare for it to be taken again; nothing short of spectacular.

Once you climb your first mountain, you’ll be hooked for life. So it’s a good thing there are so many different destinations seemingly designed for a holiday getting hooked. From the lush peaks of Wales or Scotland to the harsh, rocky crags in Eastern Europe, or the vibrant desert climbs in Arizona, mountaineering is a hobby with enormous scope for discovery and enjoyment.

4 IDEAL TIPS FOR MOVING OUT OF STATE

0

Whether it’s work, love or simply curiosity that has brought you to the States, now you’re here it’s safe to assume that you’re probably a little daunted by the sheer scope of places to visit. No doubt you’ll want to jump from state to state and try a few out for size before settling down. However, America is of course a huge country, with states having wildly varying climates, traditions, laws and taxes. A little preparation is vital, then, for the transition. With that in mind, here are 4 IDEAL tips for moving out of state.

RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH

America has 50 unique states, all of which contain their own distinct people, places, and habits. The differences are akin to changing country, and the move should be approached as such. Financially, some serious planning is required. Therefore, it’s crucial that you check out government economic data to figure out how the cost of things like housing, medical services, and insurance, as these vary from state to state. This will help you budget and adjust to the new environment quickly, avoiding any surprises torpedoing your settling in process.

GET SOMEWHERE TEMPORARY FIRST

Before you make the big move, it’s extremely prudent to first get somewhere temporary – even if that’s simply a week in an airbnb or a few days on a friend’s sofa – to properly scope out a place and get a feel for it. Though you may have developed a favourable perspective of place, through the lens of social media or even on the big screen, you may find your expectations aren’t met. Best, then, to see things first hand and experience how everyday life is led, thus avoiding any nasty surprises which may occur from jumping in at the deep end.

PICK A RELIABLE MOVING COMPANY

The prospect of moving is filled with pitfalls and potholes. A moving company is well equipped to circumnavigate those hazards, as they have local, specialist knowledge only years of experience can accrue. In short, they know what they do; the best being organized, competent and blessed with foresight. As we all know, disasters can strike in the moving house process, but a reliable company, such as Miami movers if your chosen state is Florida, will keep an inventory of your items, and have them arranged and labelled them correctly. Not only does his greatly minimize the chances of your things being damaged or lost, but it also makes the daunting task of unpacking at the other end much more manageable.

GET ON TOP OF YOUR ADMIN

In the excitement (or trepidation) of a move, some of the more boring bits of bureaucracy can be forgotten. You’re busy checking out the ‘best local restaurants’ lists, perhaps checking out new dating options on various apps, and wondering which sofa you’ll be parking your bottom on to watch Netflix. But there’s admin to get on top of, so do so accordingly. That means registering your car in your new state and applying for a new driving licence (compulsory), redirecting mail and forwarding mail, to name but a few.

5 IDEAL MUST-VISIT VINEYARDS IN ENGLAND & WALES

Much to the chagrin of the continent, English wine is starting to get a bonafide, stellar, sparkling reputation. And not a moment too soon; this country has been creating the good stuff for some time. Fortunately,  recognition is catching on. From Kent’s wine gardens, through Sussex and Essex all the way down to Devon, there’s some serious drinking to be done within these shores.

Yep, our little island now boasts over 400 commercial vineyards and our English sparkling wine is said to be better that France’s champagne, of which the former is partly due to the world’s increasing warmth. While the climate crisis is nothing to feel positive about, we may as well go into the apocalypse with a glass of the good stuff in our hand and the fear of impending doom numbed. With that in mind, here are 5 IDEAL must-visit vineyards in England and Wales.

NEW HALL VINEYARDS, CHELMSFORD FOR SPARKLING WINE

As we said above, English sparkling wine has had a great few years, that’s for sure. Once confined to the dustbin deals and house sections of the menu, its surge in popularity has seen it preferred to French champagne in blind taste tests of late. According to expert opinion, Essex has Britain’s best terroir, boasting almost perfect conditions for growing the grapes used in champagne-style sparkling wine.

To enjoy some fine fizz direct from grape to glass, head to New Hall Vineyards – one of the oldest and largest English vineyards. It was first established all the way back in 1969 by the Greenwood family and still belongs to the family, with the second and third generations of the clan now at the barrel. Throughout the Spring and Summer, group tours and tutored wine tastings are available  – there’s even a cheese platter to soak it all up. Bliss.

SEDLESCOMBE, EAST SUSSEX FOR ORGANIC WINE

If you’re a budding oenophile in the field of organic wine, them Sedlescombe is the vineyard for you. With increasing attention on sustainability, organic wine has caught the attention of many recently, including the guys behind Sedlescombe Organic Vineyard. This winery is all about producing wine made with the minimum of intervention, offering an extensive award winning portfolio comprising of whites, rose, red and sparkling wines – all certified either organic or biodynamic by the Biodynamic Association UK and suitable for both vegetarians and vegans.

A standard guided tour through the vineyards and woodland and a choice of either a ploughman’s lunch or afternoon cream tea, then a tasting of 4 organic and biodynamic wines is the offer here. Bump yourself up to a deluxe tour and you’ll get a bottle of red, white or rose wine to take home and a glass of sparkling wine with your meal, too. You can even opt for a luxury tour and stay over in the Sedlescombe Golf Hotel, with the hotel offering guided tours at £15 per person (£100 minimum).

HENCOTE, SHREWSBURY FOR A WINE WEEKEND

Wake up and smell the wine at Hencote vineyard; what a way to wake, and what a way to spend the weekend! Vineyard tours here run from May to October; plenty of time to soak up the sun kissed days and balmy, light evenings in the Shrewsbury and the Shropshire countryside, we think. If the idea of rural seclusion strikes fear into you, don’t worry, there’s plenty to do (and drink) here. Visit the winery operation to taste the locally produced award-winning wines, dine in a new restaurant sourcing the best local and national produce or stay over in a beautifully restored Georgian hay barn or in any of 10 thoughtfully appointed luxury glamping lodges. That enough for ya? We thought so. Bliss.

CAMEL VALLEY, CORNWALL FOR INTERNATIONAL AWARD WINNING WINES

Largest doesn’t always mean best, but when it comes to wine, Cornwall’s largest vineyard are trying their best to disprove this assumption. Every Wednesday evening at 5.00pm between April and October, with an additional tour at 5.00pm on Thursdays throughout August, Camel Valley opens its vineyards for a grand tour and tasting. Afterwards, there’s be a fun wine tasting session, beginning with their most famous wine, Cornwall Brut, followed by the chance to taste a minimum of 5 more wines. You can, of course, buy a few cases at a discounted price following the tasting. Nice timing guys.

CWM DERI, PEMBROKESHIRE FOR FRUIT WINES

The majority of us have only one question when it comes to the wine we drink – “Red or white?”. If you’re one of these folk then you’re seriously missing out on the depth and complexity of the grapes, types and colours on offer in Britain currently. Indeed, it’s time to broaden your wine horizons with fruit wine – and no we don’t mean wine made out of just grapes. In Britain there’s always been a strong tradition of making fruit and flower flavoured wines and the guys at Cwm Deri Vineyard are staying true to this age-old practice. Surrounded by the Pembrokeshire National Park, Cwm Deri Vineyard produces fruit and flower wines and liquors to the highest standard possible. From Apple to Black Cherry, we think they are delicious.

The best time to visit the vineyards here is between summer and late autumn where the fruit can be seen maturing into tightly-packed bunches of wine-making grapes ready for harvesting before the first winter frosts. The estate itself boasts stunning views across the vineyard and beyond, all the way to the national park from its patio and terrace; the perfect place to enjoy the liquid bounty of local fruits. Chin chin!

4 IDEAL EXERCISES TO HELP REDUCE BLOOD PRESSURE

4 IDEAL EXERCISES TO HELP REDUCE BLOOD PRESSURE

We’re probably all well aware of it by now. An increasingly sedentary lifestyle is one of Britain’s silent killers. Days spent chained to the desk, stooped over a computer or peering into a phone certainly do no favours at all for our eyes, our waistline, our backs or our blood pressure. Fortunately, there are things you can do to minimise the impact of a sedentary lifestyle, all by simply setting aside a few minutes each day for some physical activity.

Indeed, a sedentary lifestyle is one of the biggest contributors to high blood pressure. It goes without saying, then, that exercise can not only reduce but control it. The good news is that you don’t have to be running marathons every day or benching big numbers to reduce your blood pressure. All that’s required is moderate activity and a concerted effort to shift those sedentary tendencies. In fact, even half an hour of physical activity daily does wonders in improving your overall health. It may seem difficult at first, but once exercise becomes a part of your lifestyle, there’s no turning back; you’ll now develop that healthy lifestyle that you wish you could’ve started earlier before.

With this in mind, here are 4 IDEAL exercises to help reduce blood pressure.

AEROBIC EXERCISES

Different kinds of exercise and activity have different effects on your body. If you have high blood pressure and are looking to lower it, focus on activities that will help your heart and blood vessels. When this positive result is achieved, diseases related to your blood pressure level, such as pulmonary hypertension, are kept at bay. Learn more about this disease here.

Aerobic activity is one of the best types of exercises to help your heart, and you should aim to do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week for best results. That means walking, swimming, dancing, and jogging. If you’re new to pounding the tarmac, make sure you stretch well beforehand and have running shoes with the correct ankle and knee support. Should you be particularly prone to injury or sore limbs, then an insole, such as Magneto 500 Plus, will save you from those debilitating aches and pains the next day.

Yep, the reasons to devote more time to aerobic exercise are myriad:

  • Since it’s relatively easy to perform and you don’t need to invest in specialist equipment, it’s easy to get started.
  • Your respiration efficiency improves.
  • Your overall cardiovascular health is going to be positively affected.
  • Your blood sugar levels are well regulated.
  • Your feelings of stress and anxiety are reduced, keeping your overall well-being in good hands, too.

STRETCHING

Who doesn’t find at least a little tension released when stretching your hands skyward? You know, that over-exaggerated yawn we’ve all seen a million times on cartoons? Well, studies suggest that carrying out regular stretching exercises may help reduce your risk of high blood pressure. Stiff arteries (blood vessels) increase your risk of developing higher blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease. So start stretching those muscles and touch your toes if you want to keep your heart healthy.

YOGA

Speaking of stretching, according to the NHS, evidence suggests that regular yoga practice is beneficial for people with high blood pressure. And you don’t have to be able to twist into pretzel shapes and contort your body something holy to enjoy the physical benefits of a good yoga session. There are, however, certain yoga poses to avoid if you have high blood pressure, namely inversions, as when the head is below the heart, there’s an increased risk of stroke.  While aerobic activities – like walking, dancing, jogging, riding your bike, and swimming are best for your heart, a holistic combination of yoga and exercise that gets your heart pumping is perhaps best practice. Of course, you should always consult your doctor before taking up a new exercise regime should you have high blood pressure.

HOUSEHOLD CHORES

Yep, we know what you’re thinking – household chores aren’t usually considered as exercise. However, chores do in fact count towards calorie busting (90 calories every quarter of an hour, to be exact) and can lower your blood pressure reading when done regularly and with the right enthusiasm.

Of course, a tidy home also equates to a tidy mind, and a lessening of stress is associated with better heart and blood health. A tenuous link perhaps, but one which merits further investigation. The worst that could happen is a cleaner house….there really is no reason not to.

THE BOTTOM LINE

So, now you know; living a healthier lifestyle is easily achieved in four simple steps. Should you have been diagnosed with blood pressure problems, you needn’t be dismayed – it’s not the end of the world nor is it a death sentence. You may be given maintenance medications for you to lower these levels, but there’s so much that you can do by yourself, in simple, manageable ways.

Get started with these four exercises today and start to see the positive changes that it can bring for your body and your overall health.

4 IDEAL BUILDINGS TO VISIT ON A HISTORY BUFF’S TRIP TO SCOTLAND

Scottish streets are lined with iconic, historic buildings which have held their presence for many decades, even as their surroundings became have shapeshifted and modernised to an almost unrecognisable state. Yep, heritage stalks every corner of the country in one form or another., and while it’s the majestic countryside which often gets the most attention, Scotland’s cities also contain a wealth of antiquity and intrigue.

With all that in mind, here are 5 IDEAL buildings to visit on a history’s buff’s trip to Scotland.

ST. ANDREWS IN THE SQUARE, GLASGOW

Originally used as a place of worship, the category-A listed building is a famous Glasgow landmark. Built in the 18th century as a church, St. Andrews in the Square has been inhabited since as early 1754, and remained a church until 1990. It was then sold to the Glasgow Building Preservation Trust in 1993 due to hefty maintenance costs, for the princely price of £1. Bargain!

In order to preserve the building for years to come, a refresh was essential, but maintaining its classic features was a priority. The building reopened as a centre for Scottish culture in 2000 to mark St. Andrew’s Day, and as a leading performance venue, it currently boasts a range of facilities including a café, toilets and dressing rooms. As such, it can now cater to upwards of 250 guests, who can enjoy the antique architectural features of the building at weddings, award dinners and parties.

CAIRN HOTEL, EDINBURGH

Designed in 1822 by William H. Playfair, this building now hosts a plush hotel walking distance from Edinburgh Waverley station. Playfair was a prolific designer, with other immense sites in the capital including the National Monument and National Gallery.

The original intention for the building was to be one of many in a string of stunning private townhouses which line Windsor Street. The street was designed in accordance with Playfair’s 19th century Eastern New Town Scheme, and the Cairn Hotel Edinburgh is among a few of the stunning domestic commissions done by Scottish architects during this project.

An array of exquisite period features decorates the hotel building, with a wrought iron balcony embellished in a trellis pattern and Greek key border, and distinctive railings being just some of the features in Playfair’s portfolio of townhouses. Playfair brought exquisite Grecian elements to buildings in the streets of Edinburgh, and his efforts earned the capital the status of ‘Athens in the North’.

TIMBERYARD, EDINBURGH

Long-standing Edinburgh residents may recall a time before the Timberyard was used as a restaurant; indeed, once upon a time it was a Lawson’s Timber site. Even further back, the first known purpose of the building was as a props and costume store in the 19th century.

Known as ‘The Shed’, a rustic interior of chopped logs seems to pay homage to the site’s timber history. The cosy wood burner is the main attraction for many, and up to 10 guests can enjoy the warmth. As for the food, this one is certainly as intricate and unique as the building’s history, with fresh, foraged ingredients on offer.

ÒRAN MÓR, GLASGOW

Its name translates into Gaelic as ‘big song’, which suits the building at the top of Byres Road in Glasgow, as it is extremely difficult to ignore. Vibrant windows and a church spire adorned in a neon hoop make the bar and events venue a unique setting to enjoy a whisky (or two) in.

Its historic purpose was as a local place of worship, built in 1862, it soon become a place for residents to congregate. The church features 11 carved heads which pinpoint the arches of the main hall, now the auditorium of the Òran Mór. The heads all symbolise individuals who were celebrated in the history of the church.

Nowadays, the heads overlook revellers enjoying an evening on the town, with the building hosting club nights and weddings, as well as food and drink connoisseurs’ in the whisky bar and restaurant. In fact, there are over 280 variations of malts to sample here, making it a hugely popular haunt for a tipple.

4 IDEAL REASONS TO HOST YOUR WEDDING AT A PUB

Let’s say it straight; a wedding in a pub might not adhere to traditions of the past. But, it is certainly becoming a more popular option amongst couples selecting a venue for a reception for their big day. Pub weddings are on the rise, and by making a free house the setting of your wedding, you can achieve that much-coveted rustic, intimate feel when you tie the knot. An added bonus, of course, is the chance to celebrate with the finest cask ale. Cheers!

In all seriousness, it’s the break from convention and the looser, less formal sense of occasion which is increasingly appealing to so many. With that in mind here are 4 IDEAL reasons to host your wedding at a pub.

A UNIQUE TAKE ON BRIDAL SUITES

When we think of pubs and inns, we imagine warm, traditional décor that feels welcoming, respectful of tradition yet informal. Sounds like the blurb for your ideal wedding? Yep, us too.

Pubs are versatile spaces, as such, they can provide a perfect alternative wedding setting, plus they tend to feel cosier than country houses with high ceilings and drafty rooms.

Where this might be most keenly felt is the bridal suite. Equipped with original beams, classic furnishings, and a hearty breakfast delivered to the door when you wake up as newlyweds for the first time, this kind of comfort is a key selling point for those looking to have their wedding in a pub or inn. Bridal suites in pubs offer a unique charm, perfect for laid back couples. Many pubs have also added rooms to their facilities, meaning that they can accommodate wedding guests to remove any stress of finding somewhere to stay nearby. Convenience and cosiness? Count us in.

LOCAL SPECIALITIES

Like us, we’re sure you will have frequented a fair few pubs in the past, and maybe you’ve even got a favourite spot where you’re a regular customer. Us Brits love a good boozer for a variety of reasons, but the delicious, hearty food served in these institutions is certainly being one of key factors which keeps us propping up the bar.

Yep, if you’re looking for something a bit different in terms of wedding catering, far removed from the carvery and cake served so many times before, try focusing your pub venue search on places famed for their food. In Britain, some of the island’s most highly regarded cuisine is prepared in pub kitchens, just ask star chefs Tom Kerridge, Stephen Harris, Josh Eggleton et al. Perhaps consider venturing further afield, as regional twists are what make British cuisine truly intriguing. Periwinkles and spotted dick anyone? Perhaps not on your wedding night, mind.

EVERYONE WELCOME…

One of the main ways in which the pub industry caters so kindly to the wedding industry is that typically, there are no guest exemptions. While some couples choose not to allow children to attend an elaborate evening reception (‘we want to get pissed away from the kids!’…fair enough) the intimacy of pub weddings mean that kids can be kept entertained without the sense that they’re spoiling the mood or getting lost in sprawling grounds. Pubs tend to be more family orientated settings, devoid of the stuffy nature of more traditional reception venues, and this encourages a more inclusive atmosphere. And that’s an atmosphere we’re personally always down with.

…INCLUDING ANIMALS

What’s more, pubs are traditionally extremely welcoming of dogs. If you’ve got separation anxiety just thinking about booking your furry friend into the kennels for an overnight stay, then fear not. Many inns and pubs allow dogs into their venues, but if canine accomodating is a deciding factor in your decision making, consider heading to the Northumberland Coast where you’ll find plenty of dog friendly pubs in Alnwick. Here, you could wake up the morning after your wedding and go for a fresh, coastal walk with your beloved pooch. They are part of the family after all. Now that’s inclusivity.

5 IDEAL BENEFITS OF SKIPPING

While we’ve all got our own fond memories of skipping ropes in the playground, did you know that people have actually been jumping rope since as early as 1600AD? According to historical records, the Ancient Egyptians and the Australian Aborigines were some of the first to pick up a rope and jump over it for fun — and while the material might have progressed from flexible bamboo and vines to a combination of nylon and plastic, the hobby is still a firm favourite amongst adults too.

Yep, come rain or shine, skipping is a pastime that has lasted the ages, but these days the focus is more on the positive impact it has to our health rather than the giggles it yields. With this in mind, and with the help of Muddy Puddles, waterproof coat retailers, here are 5 IDEAL benefits of skipping.

AFFORDABLE AND FUN

Never has exercise been so easy and affordable. All you need to get started is a rope and some sensible shoes, so what are you waiting for? As simple a way to get some valuable physical activity into your daily routine as you could imagine— just make sure that they have enough space, of course. Often, exercising can feel like a chore but skipping provides a solution to this; you can skip virtually anywhere — and you could even be watching your favourite TV soap at the same time —  a win-win situation, we think.

BOOSTS COORDINATION

Coordination relates to the way in which we move our arms and legs and the control we have over our movements and motion. In order to stay properly mobile, all adults should be challenging their sense of coordination every day to promote a better sense of balance and improved motor skills. Skipping uses many of the body’s muscles at the same time, and requires focus on various parts of the body in tandem. Hand-eye coordination is the benefactor in this multi-muscle discipline.

REDUCES FAT AND BURNS CALORIES

We should all be aiming to raise our heart rate daily through cardio-based exercise. Skipping does this while also increasing stamina levels, with the effects more keenly felt if you’re using a weighted skipping rope. With every jump, calories are burnt, and fat reduced — making skipping one of the simplest ways to get some aerobic exercise into your daily routine.

IMPROVES CREATIVITY

Here’s something from leftfield. While some people might find the constant, consistent nature of skipping boring, others claim it boosts their creativity. This is through the desire to innovate the workout that such a monotonous routine brings. Instead of the most simple and popular two feet basic jump, try to mix things up with a bit of criss-cross (both in feet and arms) and single foot hops. In fact, any way you can think of to bring a little colour to your skipping will help fuel the imagination.

KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON SKIPPING

While skipping, the body and the brain work in harmony to maintain motion, creating a therapeutic space of reflection and mindfulness. At the end of the session, calmness and composure replace pre-skip feelings of stress and mind clutter. So, why not include a five minute skip in your day, from today? There really is no reason not to.

5 IDEAL KITCHEN INTERIOR DESIGN ADDITIONS

Home is where the heart is, as they say. And the beating atrium of any home, where nourishment is prepared and stories shared, is of course the kitchen. Where once this was a largely functional space, with the emphasis on performance and purpose, now kitchens are increasingly being seen as a vehicle in which to utilise modern designer materials and show off innovative gadgets which Heston would be proud of. If you’d like to make a statement with your exquisite taste in aesthetics, rather than via your food, then read on; our 5 IDEAL kitchen interior design additions.

TILES WITH A DIFFERENCE

Tiles are a favoured kitchen material – easily wipeable, heat resistant and the rest – but if in the past, they were valued for their ease and practicality, today, it’s all about style and aesthetic effect.

Let’s drill down into the detail with haste. Mirrored tiles, for instance, can be used to lend the illusion of greater space. Wood effect tiles, meanwhile, harness the soothing effects of nature without succumbing to the porous, delicate nature of actual wooden flooring. And we’re not just talking about splashbacks here. For flooring, it’s all about large, natural stone or wood effect tiles in gentle neutral tones like light grey, cream, or beige. Tiles are also used artistically, with a green natural slate floor married to nine-tile square accents in grey stone to great effect.

ILLUMINATION THAT CONNECTS

Large homes with an open plan kitchen will often have the dining table adjacent to the central island. Designer lighting can play an important role in marrying these two spaces harmoniously. As such, a central island lends itself to the symmetry of three pendant lights hanging from the ceiling.

By replacing garish, one tone overhead lighting, you’ll be able to see your kitchen in a completely different light – literally. Recent interior design trends dictate that you would be best electing for multiple fixtures scattered in strategic positions in place of just one overbearing light. By angling lights towards the cupboards and walls of the kitchen, the light is reflected back into the room, giving the illusion of space. Equally effective is ensuring your bulbs have a colour rendition index of over 90, culminating in a warm and cosy light.

OPT FOR BRIGHT, BOLD NEW APPLIANCES

If you’re completely sold on the idea of re-styling your kitchen, then you might want to go big by investing in some bright, bold new appliances. Not only will they improve your cooking (or at least, make it easier) but they’ll also add visual stimulation and intrigue in droves. Should an investment in a new bread maker, Kitchen Aid or fancy combi oven be a stretch of the budget too far, then a simple addition of hanging utensils, a heavy duty, tree trunk chopping board or vintage kettle and toaster will offer the requisite visual appeal. Go get it.

BESPOKE ISLAND STOOLS

One way to add elegance to a central island – particularly if it’s also the kitchen table, is to opt for designer stools. From bespoke leather Chesterfield numbers to delicately netted glass backed stools or linen effect backrests, there are so many styles and hues to choose from. Stylish chairs are now very much part of the modern penchant for ‘art islands’. That is, kitchen islands which sport features like two-toned designs (think wood and natural stone), metallic accents, and in-built tech features such as extractors that arise from the island when you are cooking. A statement piece, focal point and functional space, all rolled into one.

KEEP IT CLEAN

What good is the investment in modern materials and funky, Fat Duck worthy gizmos if your food prep space is a mess. Indeed, you’re only as good a cook as your kitchen is clean, and keeping things neat and tidy, with clean lines and everything in its right place, is one of the cornerstones of culinary wisdom. It’s an ethos, a mentality, to do everything correctly and with care, that the very best chefs cherish. In short, your mise en place can make or break you. If everything is where it should be, and mess isn’t causing distractions and impeding movement, then getting things done to the best of the cook’s ability is as easy as an expertly cooked pie.

So, make sure your tools are so clean you could do your hair in them (don’t do that though – not hygienic) and surfaces are spotless. Organise and equip your space wholely and holistically. Plastic chopping boards, of correct colour, are easier to clean than wood. Granite wipes down more totally than a textured concrete. It’s all in the detail.

5 IDEAL TIPS FOR PICKING THE PERFECT BIKE

Britain’s relationship with two wheels is a curious one. While professionally and competitively, it’s a marriage made in heaven, when it comes to our attitude to cyclists on the road and the inclusiveness of our cities to this greener way to get around, the bond is far less harmonious. If you’re looking to travel a little lighter, get a little fitter and get out there in the fresh air (or in the cycle lanes) more often, then a new set of wheels might just be the push you need. There are a couple of considerations vital to choosing a decent pair, and these are those; our 5 IDEAL tips for picking the perfect bike.

NOT ALL BIKES WERE BUILT EQUAL

Bikes are essentially divided into four broad categories, and which you choose will of course be determined by your needs and what you want to get out of your bike. In short:

Road bikes are designed to be ridden on the pavement or, you guessed it, the road. They feature smoother tires and are not well suited for off-road riding but are perfect for zipping about in urban environments.  The design helps the rider to reach faster speeds to fly through city streets and get away (relatively) quickly from a red light. Ideal, then, for the commute and the Sunday morning trip to the local Sainsbury’s for a paper.

Mountain bikes, familiar to most, are built to be ridden on more diverse, unpredictable terrain. A mountain bike – usually equipped with Schwalbe Billy Bonkers tyres or something similar – is great for off-road biking, gravel or dirt paths, and even work well for especially rocky paths.

If you like to follow your own path (off the beaten one, that is) and have a daredevil streak which burns brightly, this one’s for you. As our friends at evo, an acclaimed Seattle mountain bike shop, so eloquently put it; ”Step on the pedals of a mountain bike, and you’ll immediately feel like a kid again”.

Cruisers are the type of bike that you might just recognize from the movies. You know, the ones that bare-chested young things ride on a boardwalk or near the beach in sepia-tinged shades. These types of bikes are not built for rugged ground and are harder to manoeuvre in tight spots. A cruiser is a great option for leisure riding, however.

Finally, a hybrid bike is basically a combination of a mountain and road. These bikes take the best of both and provide a great all-around bike, especially suited to commuters that may have to cover some more difficult ground along the way.

YOU NEEDN’T BREAK THE BANK

The truth is that you can spend almost as little or as much as you want on a bike, and the options are almost endless. Most of us, however, will find that the most common bikes run between £150 and £300. For an idea of what types of bikes you can find in this price range, check out this piece on affordable road bike under 300 dollars, which guides you towards some affordable options with all the style of a more expensive set of wheels.

SIZE MATTERS

Bikes are available in a huge range of sizes and are generally listed by frame size. These measurements will vary depending on the type of bike. The frame size right for you needs to accommodate not only your height but more specifically your inseam, that is the length of your inner leg from your upper thigh to the ground. And the only way to truly recognise if this is the right fit is by mounting one and testing it out for size.

Should you be ordering online and not have the chance to physically test run your potential new wheels, a good rule of thumb is to multiply your inseam by .65 (and round down) to identify a best fit. That means that a full-grown man with an inseam of 32 inches will want to look for bikes with a frame size of 20 inches.

SPEED & SUSPENSION

The next thing to consider is the mechanics you want in your bike. This means the speeds available, the suspension, and even the brakes. Long gone are the days when the only options were a 10-speed, 3-speed, or single speed. Today you can find bikes with as many as 21 different speeds, and the necessity for such variety is established by what you’re going to be using the bike for.

Perhaps most importantly, the suspension is going to determine how much you feel each bump on the road as you travel. Since road bikes are designed for use on pavement, road and smoother terrain, they may not have any suspension, while most mountain bikes and even hybrids have full suspension for a smoother ride. So, pick your suspensions according to your needs. Simples.

BRAKE BETTER

Finally, you should consider the type of braking system your bike needs. There are four general types of brakes found on bikes:

Coaster brakes are what you have probably seen on most children’s bikes.  These are the type which engages when the pedals are moved backwards and are the weakest type of braking system; of very little help if you need to brake while heading downhill.

Disc brakes are mostly found in adult bikes and consists of a hub that is attached to the wheel.  When engaged the grip is forced against the hub, slowing and eventually stopping the bike. Discs are ideal for individuals who have to ride in multiple weather conditions.

Drum brakes are, for most, the best type of braking system. Since the entire braking mechanism is contained within the brake drum, they are protected from the elements. They also require little regular maintenance, but once they need to be replaced you must replace the entire wheel. For bike enthusiasts, it’s worth the investment.

The last type of brakes, rim brakes, is probably what most people are familiar. A rim brake engages a pad and forces it against the exterior of the wheel rim slowing the bike. They are easy to inspect and replace if necessary. Unfortunately, rim brakes do not provide much in terms of safety for more advanced riders, especially on rougher terrain.
