5 IDEAL WAYS TO FORGO FAST FASHION

Nearly all of us are guilty of over-consuming and it’s having a direct, damaging impact on our planet, to say the least. Annually, we buy 80 billion pieces of clothing – a 400% upsurge over the last 20 years and indicative of a wide and growing problem. Producing these clothes depends on significant amounts of work and resources. The amount of water required to produce the 80 billion pieces mentioned above, for example, would fill 32 million Olympic-sized swimming pools. Our shopping habits have become out of hand, and it’s an issue that needs addressed immediately.

That said, fashion at its core is an art form, and no one should be limited with the way they want to express themselves. But when it equals devastating impacts on the environment, then it’s time to question whether it’s actually worth it. After all, when the world’s burning up and unlivable, those clothes are going to feel pretty uncomfortable, are we right? Though it sometimes feels impossible to resist or avoid a cheap t-shirt or pair of socks, it really is time to take a step back before it’s too late; our 5 IDEAL ways to forgo fast fashion.

KNOW THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF THE MATERIALS YOU USE

Experiments have suggested that it can take 1800 gallons of water to grow the cotton to make just one pair of jeans. Moreover,  cotton accounts for almost 50% of the total fibre used to make our clothes and is responsible for 18% of worldwide pesticide use and 25% of total insecticide use. Think about that next time you’re pondering a £9 pair from Primark.

Leather production has been known to have dangerous implications against the environment and human health, too. So much so, in fact, that studies have shown that leather tannery workers are at a greater risk of cancer by between 20-50%, as well as the harmful chemicals involved are polluting natural water sources and having a devastating impact on nearby communities. The list could go on. It’s therefore vital to educate yourself on the true effect of such seemingly innocuous shopping choices.

SECOND HAND

Of course, the single most efficient way to reduce your fashion footprint is to simply stop buying new clothes altogether. For some, that may sound like a proposition too radical to bear, but hear us out. There are myriad ways to never have to hit the high street again. Give charity shops your custom with vigour and regularity. There are some amazing finds lurking on the rails of your local British Heart Foundation or Mind, and you’ll be helping a valuable cause in the process of purchase, too. There really is no reason not to.

UPCYCLE & REPURPOSE OLD CLOTHES

Upcycling old clothes that are still in good condition but not necessarily in fashion is a smart, savvy way to readdress your wardrobe and redress yourself. If you’re handy with the old thread and needle, you could repurpose old items and turn them into something new and groovy in no time. Giving a new lease of life to a benched bit of clothing can bring added sentimental value, encourage creativity and most of all, it’ll without doubt be a unique, one-of-a-kind piece. Thrift has never sounded so fashionable.

SWAP AND RENT

In the spirit of reusing, suggest to friends a swapping session. We’ve all got those outfits we’ve fallen out of love with, which don’t have anything implicitly wrong with them, they’re just out of favour. Well, snap! So why not gather up the items gathering dust in the back of your wardrobe and see if any friends fancy trying them out for size. Should you have something which still can’t find a body for, donate them to that aforementioned local charity shop. And if you really do need to buy a new piece, prioritise fair trade purchases.

EMBRACE A LOOK LESS IDENTIKIT

If we’re all shopping at H&M, Topshop and Zara (disclaimer: other high street stores do exist), then it’s safe to say we’re all going to look a little similar, right? There’s probably another person reading this article right now wearing the exact same pair of underwear as you (not the actual same, but you get our gist) and though that might excite the odd person, generally it’s not a particularly enthralling thought. But in forgoing fast fashion, you’ll be embracing the chance to have a look all your own, leaving the identikit styles of the high street to the sheep who shop there. We’ve written more about creating your own unique wardrobe here; check it out!

5 IDEAL WAYS TO BE A MORE EFFICIENT FREELANCER

It’s the dream of so many; to be your own boss, working from home and in pyjamas, with a freshly brewed coffee in one hand, a margarita in the other, leftover curry for lunch and a few emails sent each day enough to earn its keep.

But rarely does dream versus reality so starkly disagree. Self-discipline, motivation, unreliable incomes and unpredictable hours are just some of the obstacles that can cause you to trip, stumble and fall if you’re not constantly vigilant, alert and on your A-game. Without a ruthless streak, the boundaries of home and office converge in such a way that you never clock out, even answering emails in your sleep. The weekends are still work days, and the money rarely arrives when it’s supposed to. It’s vital then, to be as productive and disciplined as possible. Here’s how; our 5 IDEAL ways to be a more efficient freelancer.

OUTSOURCE WHERE POSSIBLE

Though no wo/man is an island, being a freelancer can often feel like one. As such, you might find yourself trying to do everything yourself, both to save money and retain creative control of every process of your precious work. We don’t blame you. But we can’t stress this enough; collaboration is king and sharing the load (even at a cost) is extremely worthwhile, for your creative output and your stress levels.

So, outsource jobs wherever possible; there are experts in every esoteric field you could think of, so make the most of them. Let’s be honest, they’re probably better equipped than you to complete the job to your requirements. Some major tasks which definitely merit outsourcing include: any printing you may have in bulk (www.helloprint.co.uk are particular favourites of ours), proofreading and editing (upwork.com lead the field) and website and logo design (for this, we’d turn to fiverr.com).

HARNESS THE POWER OF PROPER HOME OFFICE WORKFLOW

Nine times out of ten, working freelance means from home. That, or a clustered coffee shop unconducive to getting anything done. Nope, it’s a far more efficient move in the long run to get the former tidy, well appointed and war ready for work. Above all, this encourages a more disciplined and regimented approach to the working day, rather than an aimless back’n’forth between Pret and Costa and the inevitable battle with their wifi.

You needn’t invest in fancy gadgets to harness the power of proper home office workflow. Instead, prioritise the finer details. Declutter religiously and ruthlessly, set up pot plants (ideal for boosting productivity), perhaps even embrace the power of a standing desk and decent, supportive chair. Most pertinently, create a distinction between your working space and domestic areas of recreation, thus eliminating distraction and temptation. Efficiency will naturally follow. Check out some more of our tips for home office heaven here.

TAKE A CHANCE ON TECHNOLOGY

Freelancing can be a lonely gig; no watercooler discussion of the latest Love Island episode, no gossip with colleagues about superiors and no help with deadlines. While technology can’t help with the first two (‘Alexa doesn’t understand your request to speculate about Graham from accounts’), it certainly can assist with certain aspects of your work, particularly those reliant on repetition. So, schedule tasks and automate wherever possible, standardise process, set reminders and instructions on your preferred home office app and, in doing so, leave yourself room for the creative, skilled elements of your work which you, and you alone, are best at.

SET BOUNDARIES DIGITALLY

Work smarter, not harder, as the old saying goes. Never has this been truer than when discussing freelancers. The fact that there is seemingly no sense of when the working day has finished and the downtime begun seriously affects productivity. Indeed, as a freelancer, you’ll likely find that your eyes are fixed on a laptop or phone from the moment you first sit down to work in the morning to the point you turn in for the night. With no true downtime, efficiency actually suffers greatly.

It’s fair to say that sometimes willpower alone just isn’t enough, especially when your income depends on your constant clicking, typing and scrolling, to drag yourself away. You can, however, set various digital reminders, automatic messages and timed lock outs to help you wrestle back control of your work/life balance. Consider an out of office reply from 6pm until the next morning, to mimic closing the office door behind you. With proper rest and respite, you’ll find your work inevitably improves. It’s so true it bears repeating; work smarter, not harder.

TARGETS

Self employment can sometimes feel like an undirected meander through the day, rather than a purposeful and focused foray. Setting targets, both long and short term, is the key to success when you are your own boss. These don’t necessarily have to be purely focused on income, revenue and money making; personal growth and training should also play a part. This holistic approach to improvement will be more beneficial to your company’s flourishing in the long run, make no mistake.

5 IDEAL STEPS TO BETTER MINDFUL MEDITATION

The hustle and bustle of modern life has left the country’s collective inner calm in tatters. We’re stressed, with strained and our focus is scattergun. The distraction of deadlines and devices and the pull of social media only exacerbates things. It’s no surprise, then, that more and more of us are turning to the ancient art of mindful meditation to bring clarity and precision to our lives. With this in mind, and with the help of co-founders of Inhere (London’s innovative meditation concept), Adiba Osmani and Ghazal Abrishamchi, here are 5 IDEAL steps to better mindful meditation.

START SMALL

Mindful meditation is just like exercise; it takes time, practice and dedication before results emerge. It would be folly to expect immediate weight loss when you’ve only hit the treadmill once and the same goes for the benefits of meditation.

At first, practice taking just a few minutes each day to gather the attention on your breath, breathing deeply from the belly and then observing whatever thoughts or emotions there are, being completely accepting of them when they arrive.

POSTURE MATTERS

Proper posture when meditating is important. You should sit on the floor or on a chair in a comfortable position with your back straight (you’ll find you’re liable to nod off if you lay down). Such a position helps you attain the optimum, deep breaths so crucial to meditation.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE BREATH

An element intrinsic to mindful meditation is the idea of ‘following your breath’, from the moment it leaves your lungs to its natural conclusion, and then back again on the inhale. Feel your breath as it moves in and out, follow its rhythm and notice how it feels as it flows through the body. Doing this every day even for just a few minutes keeps us grounded and in the moment, helping to rein in the incessant pull of thoughts and emotions that may seem too much to handle sometimes.

OBSERVE & BRING IT BACK

It’s completely natural and expected during meditation for your mind to wander, to create narratives, to ruminate, to dwell on past events and plan future ones. The trick is to simply observe the thoughts that pass through your mind, as well as the sensations that arise in your body, rather than trying to dictate or deal with them. Become the ‘silent witness’, as it were, and embrace this reflective state. All of our thoughts, feelings and sensations are valid when meditating; we watch, we don’t judge or analyse.

DON’T DEFINE YOUR MEDITATION IN TERMS OF SUCCESS OR FAILURE

If you had a session where your mind was particularly active, leading to frustration with the practice, don’t conclude it to be a failed meditation. It’s all part of the process, and your mind will learn from the experience. Observe and acknowledge, and then move on. You’ll soon find your approach to the real world becomes more patient and compassionate, more content and balanced. And we all want that, right?

7 IDEAL WAYS TO SPEND A RAINY DAY ON HOLIDAY

For a nation so obsessed with the weather and so used to the rain, it’s amazing that we go abroad so unprepared for a day indoors. With a suitcase full of shorts, t shirts and sunnies, and an optimism unbridled, us Brits tend to bank on wall to wall, back to back sun and no excuses. But let’s face it; we’ve never been very good at predicting the weather. So, should you be be traveling on a bad weather day, anticipating a rainy day from the weather forecast or stuck indoors on your trip, all is not lost; there’s still plenty of fun to be had. Here’s some ideas; our 7 IDEAL ways to spend a rainy day on holiday.

EXPLORE THE LOCAL CUISINE

A bad weather day is a perfect opportunity to try out the local cuisine. Under roof, in the warmth, and distracted for ages by delicious food. You can visit the local food markets, sign up for a cooking class, or join a street food tour (using a taxi, of course).

Depending on your destination, you can learn how to make local specialties, spend a day in a hawking food center, or have a leisurely lunch in a local restaurant. Tasting the delicacies of a place is an essential part of immersing yourself in the local culture. And no amount of bad weather can mess with that.

HIT THE SPA

If bad weather is preventing you from getting outside, there’s still the chance for some serious r’n’r at the spa. Relaxing in a robe reading local magazines, getting a massage, meditating in the steam room, and soaking in the hot tub can add oodles of fun to a lousy weather day. Because holidays are all about getting refreshed and recharged; don’t let the rain prevent this. It’s what the spa was designed for, right?

INSTALL YOURSELF AT THE BAR

If you’re able to ditch the car, then spending your day sampling the local drinking delicacies of your destination might be a fun way to pass a bad weather day. Whether it’s a piano bar on Bourbon Street, a Malbec winery in Argentina, a Mezcal tasting in Mexico, or an Irish pub in Dublin, enjoying a few drinks will undoubtedly make a dreary weather day pass more quickly. Perhaps more importantly, bedding in at a bar is a great way to shoot the breeze with locals and make new friends. Just remember to drink responsibly.

GET IN A GOOD WORKOUT

If the weather shows no signs of improvement, you can use the opportunity to break a sweat by going for workouts at the hotel gym. Keep it cultural by doing a workout specific to your travel destination, for example, Bachata in Mexico, traditional yoga in India, capoeira in Brazil, or Thai boxing in Phuket. Sure, it might be beyond your comfort zone but that’s what travel is all about, right? And all that eating and drinking we mentioned will be guilt-free after a strong showing in the gym.

VISIT A LOCAL MUSEUM

Embrace the chance to get educated. Visiting a local museum is among the best rainy day activities as dryness is guaranteed and you have an excuse to get seriously stuck into the culture of your destination. To avoid the shelter seeking crowds, go niche; find a museum or gallery catering to the esoteric tastes of the area and leave with a brain full of useful facts and intriguing tidbits.

DUVET DAY

A holiday is all about relaxing, and even though you might not allow yourself the comfort of lazing all day in bed when at home, cuddling up for a nap on a rainy day is a much-underrated activity. Don’t succumb to the pressure of being on holiday and needing to constantly be active and in demand. You could instead download a few films or tackle that novel you’ve haven’t made time for back home. Indulge; that’s what holidays were designed for.

BRAVE IT

Or you could ignore all these previous suggestions, take the bull by the horns, and get brave and out there. Sure, if the weather’s on the dangerous side, it’s best to stay in, but don’t let a little drizzle prevent you from sticking to your travel schedule. Just ensure you have the right gear for the elements; perhaps a poncho, umbrella or jacket will suffice.

4 IDEAL WAYS TO UPDATE YOUR BEDROOM FOR AUTUMN

So you slept with the windows shut for the first time in a while last night? Yep, we see ya. Finger hovering over the thermostat, wondering if it’s okay to fire it up? Us too! Thick socks and jogging trousers dusted off and now designated as your comfy clothes? Oh yeah.

Nope, we haven’t been spying on you. But we are in the same boat. We all are. Autumn is definitely in the air; we feel it in the cooling temperatures, we see it in the darker evenings, we smell it in the pumpkin spiced lattes. It’s here. And as such, your bedroom needs an update to be synergetic with the season. Here’s how; our 4 IDEAL ways to update your bedroom for autumn.

CHANGE UP THE LIGHTING

Chances are you didn’t need much mood lighting during the summer months; you were out and about, enjoying the balmy, hazy evenings, not cozied up in bed with a good book. But autumn signals a change in our habits. Yep, that’s more early nights under the duvet, enjoying the comfort and cosiness of the domestic space as the nights gradually close in. So, you’re going to need to change up the lighting; get some dimmers installed, get some bulbs which emit a warm glow or lampshades which promote one.

It’s all about layering here and combining different lights to create a particular mood or feel. From side lamps illuminating a dark corner to flickering candles creating a warm glow, this layered approach is ideal for switching up the shade according to the activity you want to shine some light on. For inspiration, check out the lighting range from At Home Comforts by Jack Stonehouse, which offers plenty of scope for switching up the lighting possibilities.

ENRICH THE ROOM

Summer was rightly all about light blues, yellows and oranges, channeling the sea, sky, sun and our tans. But that palate, and the glorious memories of bright, heady days, feel somewhat out of place in the relative gloom of autumn, like an ex whose scent on your pillowcase simply won’t dissipate.

It’s time to refresh, reboot and refocus forwards. As such, you should channel the energy of autumn with dark oranges, deep, rich reds, and earthy tones of racing green and brown. You don’t need to repaint your room; simply change up the bedsheets to a darker tone, invest in some throws in the new season’s shades and introduce some cushions with a more autumnal themed design. The bed is the focal point of the room, so give it some love.

LAYER UP

Practically and aesthetically, the emergence of autumn should coincide with you warming your room. It’s time to get cosy, and this all starts with layering up the windows, the bed and more. If you’ve deployed simple blackout blinds all summer in an attempt to keep out that 4am sunrise, now is the time to reintroduce curtains. This serves to add warmth to the room physically, and visually it feels more comforting, too. If these curtains can harness the hues of the season, all the better. It’s also time to dust off that thicker duvet and perhaps add an extra throw to the end of your bed. Don’t fight it; the cold nights are coming.

SCENT IT SOMETHING SEASONAL

Channeling the energy of autumn shouldn’t extend only to the visual appeal of your bedroom; you can exploit all the senses here, and smell plays a huge role in bringing that warm, comforting hug of the season into your domestic space.

Candles are the obvious go-to here, but you can bring aroma into your bedroom in other ways; diffusers, popery and incense can all play a part. Perhaps steer clear of the obvious pumpkin smell and harness instead the power of early ‘Christmassy’ spices like clove and cinnamon (we like to wrap our candles in cinnamon sticks for an extra injection of the good stuff), cedarwood, and apple. Hey, maybe autumn isn’t so bad after all.

8 IDEAL BREWERIES TO EXPLORE IN BEND, OREGON

the best craft beer breweries in Bend, Oregon

What was once the preserve of the esoteric and the hipster is now a fully blown, nationwide phenomenon here in the UK. Yep, craft beer has gone from bathtub brewed to on the lips of the average household in just a few boozy years. With tart ‘sours’, ‘coffee porters’ and just about everything else in between, craft beer is now estimated to make up 6.5% of all beer sales in the UK. But who do we have to thank for this revolution? Why the USA, of course, who have been leading the way in microbrewing and craft beer for some time now. And arguably, it’s Oregon where it all began.

If you want to gain even more focus, like a satellite zooming in on Google Earth with ever greater precision, then it’s in the city of Bend, with more breweries per capita than any other (one for every 4500 people), that you should be heading; cheap flights can be found at Faremart.com or check the United Airlines official site to book a flight. Once there, the Bend Ale Trail will give you have you going as long as you can stand, with souvenirs and tasters all along the way. Sound good? It does to us, too. To get you inspired, here are 8 IDEAL breweries to explore in Bend, Oregon.

DESCHUTES BREWERY

It’s probably the most recognizable brand in town, one which began as a small brewpub way back in 1988, making them one of the oldest around too. Deschutes provides you with an insight into brewing facilities, live tasting rooms, plus a couple of brewhouses if you fancy furthering your hangover the following day.

Particularly popular is Mirror Pond, which references a famous body of water in Bend. Traditional Beaver State pub grub is available here, too. Look out for poutine and Central Oregon beef burgers; bliss with a beer.

SUNRIVER BREWERY

Sunriver Brewing is in Sunriver itself and is one of the main reasons visitors flock here. The brand has a handful of award-winning beers with their seasonal offerings especially intriguing. If you’re visiting in September or October (arguably the finest time to visit the state) then their Amarillo Fresh Hop IPA (d’Bomb – their words, not ours) is a winner. Equally enjoyable is the Rippin, a Northwest pale ale, that goes well with a beer pretzel with cheese. Double beer and cheese? Sign us up.

CRUX BREWERY

Crux Brewery, also known as the Crux Fermentation project, uses some innovative brewing methods and techniques to produce its ever unique and one of its kind beers.

The process here involves open fermentation, decoction mashing and barrel aging which produces a uniquely flavoured beer which you won’t find anywhere else in Bend. The venue itself is a modern pub house and great place to spend an afternoon. Should you be settling in for the evening, be warned; the tasty beers here are deceptively strong. Line your stomach with their El Sancho tacos if they’re on the special’s.

WORTHY BREWERY

Worthy Brewing is certainly worth a visit. Located on the east side of Bend, the place has already become an institution though only established in 2012. The brewery is focused around a beautiful garden and greenhouse, where they grow hops, experiment and test them to make arguably the best beer in town. Here they also grow herbs used in their food. Interestingly, and inspired by the owner’s keen interest in astronomy, there’s an observatory on site.

BEND BREWING COMPANY

The BBC (not to be confused with Auntie) made its advent in the brewing industry in 1995, occupying a prime location on the river Mirror Pond (not to be confused with the beer of the same name…aaaah), and has a distinct system to process their brews, using fire kettles to create assertive, unique flavours for their brews. The sours on offer are particularly good.

SILVER MOON

The Silver Moon Brewing has been trading since 1952 and has seen many renovations and changes of owners during that time. The one consistent? Their commitment to quality. Silver Moon can be found all over town, but to get a true feel for the soul behind the beer, it’s worth heading to the brewery where it all began. With the view of Bend’s downtown, and weekly live music, this is a sublime spot for suppin’. It’s a social hotspot, with regular events like Bingo for the Cure (supporting American Cancer Society), board game and trivia nights and much more.

BONEYARD

An interesting story behind the name of this one….

The owner of Boneyard first started out in an old auto shop, where he began collecting old, hand-me-down brewery equipment from other breweries, and ultimately, created his own little Boneyard. Time’s changed, and so has the fortune of the brewery, which today stands proudly as its very own operation. Old fermenters got replaced, new brewing methods brought in, but a nod to their heritage remains; they didn’t replace their old 20 barrel system and it’s still in use to this day.

GOODLIFE BREWERY

The company was the first in Bend to can their beer; now the most popular storage method for craft beers. The inside area is quite small and waits are long. They do, however, have a huge lawn out back with a bar and lawn games. The GoodLife Brewing Company has a huge brewing system, where it uses a 30 barrel, 4 vessel system that has been customised to creative their complex, hoppy offerings. A final stop on a boozy tour of Bend. We know you’ll be back.

Here at IDEAL we realise that there’s more to this crazy dance than the accumulation of ‘stuff’. A life of accruing possessions will only accrue dust. Oiling the Capitalist wheels with your wallet won’t bring clarity, of that there’s no doubt….

But who can deny the positivity that a bit of pampering brings? There’s nothing wrong with taking a look inwards from time to time, letting go and just spoiling yourself. But let’s face it; a ‘buy, buy, buy’ mentality is a little wasteful, to say the least, for both our wallet and more pertinently, the planet. With that in mind, this week we’re taking a look at better caring for the stuff we already own. Here are 5 IDEAL things we’re into this week.

5 IDEAL REASONS TO CHOOSE BALI FOR YOUR NEXT FITNESS RETREAT

The obstacles to the gym are never ending. There’s that sofa to sit on, that dinner to inhale, a date to go on and Netflix to chill with. Sometimes it seems more sensible to find a fitness commitment you can neither ignore nor postpone; one which might take you to a far flung corner of the globe as a little added bonus.

Once you’ve decided on this drastic but compelling move, then it’s time to narrow down the options. Golden sand should play a part. A healthy, vibrant cuisine needs to be in the conversation. A diverse landscape ought to complete the list. Are you thinking what we’re thinking? Yep, here are 5 IDEAL reasons to choose Bali for your next fitness retreat.

NATURE’S BOUNTY

Sure, a fitness retreat should focus on sweating it out and pumping some iron first and foremost. But equally as important for a holistic, wholesome approach to getting healthy is diet. When the air is this fresh, the soil this natural and the vegetation this abundant, well, let’s just say you’re in for a treat. Tropical fruit is everywhere; you have to get stuck into the King of Fruits, durian, whilst on the island; a creamy, pungent joy. Most roadside fruit vendors will also stock mangosteen, the bulbous, curious looking fruit which yields the sweetest nuggets of flesh. In terms of health, the fruit has for centuries been believed to alleviate skin conditions.

Perhaps the most healthy, delicious thing you can try in Bali is tempeh, which is cooked, fermented soybeans similar to tofu, but higher in protein and fibre. Should you be enrolling in a boot camp or fitness retreat on the island, most provide meal plans and diet advice. For instance, with Active Escapes Fitness Retreats in Bali, an on site nutritionist is at hand to guide you through this exotic, thrilling cuisine. In the healthiest way possible, of course.

SCENERY SPECTACULAR

The confines of the gym don’t exactly work for motivation, now do they? Running between towering mountains, push ups on golden sands, ‘lengths’ in crystal clear waters…now that ticks the boxes right? Bali’s spectacular scenery will have you seriously inspired to push on that extra mile, lift another kg or simply get up a little bit earlier to get out there and amongst it. Most of the reputable fitness retreats host a good variety of their sessions in the great outdoors, from  hiking up Mount. Batur to obstacle courses housed in rice paddies. It’s all here, and it’s all beautiful. It’s nicknamed the Island of the Gods for a reason.

WATER WORKOUT

Speaking of nature’s gym, Bali’s location means its water sports options are some of the finest in the world. There’s snorkelling and scuba diving around Sanur, Menjangan Island, Blue Lagoon, Tulamben & Amed, and Nusa Lembongan, because who said that you shouldn’t combine some recreation with your exercise? Surfing is also huge here, with the workout next level and waves challenging; head to Ulawatu or Padang Padang for the best spots. Most fitness retreats will provide, or organise, lessons and equipment for you.

EXERCISE YOUR CONFIDENCE

Bali has a massive expat and digital nomad scene, as well as throngs of travellers here for fitness. A trip here with the intention of getting healthy, then, is also one which will give your social skills a good workout. Should your motive for getting away be a spell of low confidence, a trip to Bali could be just the ticket. Most looking to meet like minded people head to Ubud, though it’s reached saturation point in terms of transient expat life. Better to make for Canggu for a fresher vibe.

…AND MIND

Healthy body, healthy mind, right? And vice versa, that’s for sure. The lines between fitness and wellness retreats get blurred here, but that’s a flexibility we’re very much here for. 5 IDEAL THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SHIPPING WHEN SETTING UP YOUR BUSINESS

Deciding to become self-employed and running your own thing is a huge step to take in your career. It’s also a hugely rewarding one. With more people becoming their own boss than ever before, it’s safe to say that taking the plunge into work-based autonomy is the new normal.

Whether you’re setting up a service or selling a product, owning your own business can be fulfilling and stressful in equal measure. Perhaps the least glamorous elements of all of this (apart from working from home in your pyjamas) is the admin. From bookkeeping to forecasts, the list of bureaucracy can feel endless.

If your new business dream involves selling a product, you’ll have to consider the realm of shipping. While acquiring your product might be easy, getting it out to your customers can sometimes prove difficult. To avoid this, it’s important to have a sound shipping plan in place, so here are 5 IDEAL things you should know about shipping when setting up your business.

SHIPPING SOFTWARE

Before you even begin to organise sending out products, it’s imperative that you have the right software in place, to make life more simple and streamlined from the get go. Shipping software not only enables you to print labels from the comfort of your home or new office, but it also means you can track packages, too.

Because of this, you will have an accurate log of shipment dates as well as delivery completion dates. This is great for your records, tax returns, and profit and loss analysis, as it means a package should never get lost in the shipment process and there will be automated evidence of every step of the journey.

RESPONSIBLE PACKAGING

If you’re sending things overseas, it’s even more important to make sure your packages are as lightweight as possible. The lighter the packages, the less they’ll cost to ship. Similarly, the more tightly you pack something, the less likely it is to break or be damaged in transit.

When packing delicate items, in particular, use things like bubble wrap and air pillows to cushion the product. It’s also important to consider the environmental impact of your package, so try to avoid using an excess of plastic or cardboard where you can.

UNDERSTAND THE HIDDEN COSTS

You’ve got your first few orders – congratulations! Now is the time to shine, to put everything you’ve worked for into practice. But with one package heading to Australia and another to America, have you thought about how much extra that will cost?

Every country has its own regulations on shipping costs including things like tax and duties. A helpful term to know when forecasting for these things is ‘landing cost’. This refers to the entire cost of the order to your business. For example, a customer might unknowingly have to cover the cost of some of their delivery if you haven’t first considered all the extra charges in your billing. This is hardly good for business and with the ease of internet reviewing, customer service has never been so crucial to a business model. Don’t leave a nasty surprise for the customer and a subsequent bad taste in their mouth. They’ll likely spit it out online, to the detriment of your company’s reputation. Instead, factor in these hidden costs to your forecasting and prices.

COUNTRY SPECIFIC REGULATION

Speaking of those country-specific hidden costs, do you know if you can send your product to every country in the world? You might be surprised. Indeed, it’s one thing to advertise international shipping for your business, but it’s no good if a customer in Japan orders something and it turns out you can’t get your product through customs.

Often, you can find all this kind of information on government or other official websites, so thoroughly research these particulars before promising something to your consumers that ultimately, you may not be able to deliver.

PARTNER WITH A COURIER SERVICE

As the owner of a business, you’re likely to be a visionary (or see yourself as one). You like to imagine the bigger picture and plans for the future rather than the nitty-gritty details. Perhaps you’re leaning back in your ergonomic chair, feet on the desk, sweeping your hand across your kingdom. As such, we doubt you’re hopping on youpushbikeke and delivering every item by hand. Nope, this is beneath you. And if you’re shipping internationally, it’s time to consider partnering with courier services

Collaborating with a courier service takes away the stress from a lot of the shipping process. If you’re working with a reputable company, you know that your parcels should safely end up in their end destination. This leaves you with the bigger decisions of the day, like when to eat lunch and whether you can claim back tax on your new coffee machine.

4 IDEAL WAYS TO ADD A TOUCH OF NATURE TO YOUR HOME

Bringing the outside in. Nope we’re not inviting the rain clouds in for a cuppa and a chat. Rather, we’re channeling nature’s energy, which coincidentally is one of the biggest design and lifestyle trends of 2019. We’re certainly not complaining. Anything that invites the optimism and calm of nature into the domestic space is just fine by us. Positive vibes are certain to follow. But how do you harness the power of the great outdoors whilst avoiding an overdose of the elements? Subtly and restraint are the watchwords here, and if those also form part of your mantra, then read on; our 4 IDEAL ways to add a touch of nature to your home.

A WOODEN FINISH

It is easy to create an ambience that calls to mind elements of the natural world by eradicating – or at least, lessening – human-made materials from your home. Start by replacing obvious use of plastic and metal with objects which are made of wood or have a wooden finish. Updating the design of your home to embrace nature needn’t be expensive – you can repurpose and recycle items to create features and visual flourishes. You needn’t go for a full refit; instead simply replacing cabinet doors or desk tops with a new wooden finish can bring that natural look. The guys over at cabinetdoorsnmore.com have a great selection for inspiration. Check it out.

GO GREEN

We all want to connect more with the great outdoors, to lay in a field, frolic amongst the long grass or climb a tree and stay up there for a little longer than is normal. We’re all also too busy to act on these desires; there are too many notifications to check, emails to reply to and selfies to pose for. Bringing the outside in, then, with pot plants, is that little nod to nature in times of urban suffocation. The benefits of using plants in your own home are myriad. Not only do they purify the air and balance out a house’s humidity, but they also smell great and have a soothing effect. That’s even before we consider the aesthetics.

VERTICAL GARDEN GLORY

Speaking of getting greener; vertical gardens are a growing (in every sense of the word) trend for people who live in urban areas with small outdoor spaces. A wide variety of plants can grow in vertical structures and flower baskets, from decorative plants to delicious vegetables. And they’re economic with your valuable floor-based real estate. Versatile they are, too, with sunny porches, window boxes and wall structures all being prime for the vertical wall treatment. If you have no outdoor space to spare, living walls do the same trick just as aptly. Crafted from moss and foliage, a living wall will oxygenate a room and is extremely simple to maintain.

PET POSITIVE

Caring for a pet can help to bring some of the relaxation of nature into your home. What’s more, they can help you keep fit, create a fun and engaging ambience at home, and even decrease stress levels when you spend time with them. Bear in mind that if you have a very busy schedule or travel a lot, a cat or dog may be too much of a commitment; for life, not just for Christmas, and all that. A low-maintenance alternative is to introduce a fish tank to your domestic space. If you’d like to create a spectacular visual display, it‘s worth considering a saltwater tank, allowing for an impressive and diverse collection of underwater sea creatures far removed from the usual goldfish set up.

5 IDEAL THINGS TO BRING YOUR HOME COOKING TO PROFESSIONAL LEVEL

So, you can tell your brunoise from your batonnet. Your cakes never sink and your bottom’s never soggy. When someone asks for medium rare, they get it, and guests are always asking for seconds. You’ve grown used to hearing the baying crowd’s demands that you open your own place. Because you’re here, we think it’s safe to assume that you’re looking to turn things up a dial or two more, and get your kitchen properly kitted out. If so, read on; our 5 IDEAL things to bring your home cooking to professional level.

A HIGH QUALITY KNIFE SET

You know what they say; a poor workperson always blames their tools. And ask any chef what their top tip would be for better cooking, and the answer will be resolutely, resoundingly choral; a good set of knives.

Ideally, and at least, you should have a set of three including a chef’s knife, a serrated bread knife and a paring knife. With these to hand, there will be nothing you can’t handle when it comes to chopping. Once you’ve got a handle on basic slicing and dicing technique you might also want to start considering more specialised blades, like Japanese cooking knives, which can make food prep actively enjoyable in its efficiency.

Other useful additions to your block or roll would be a filleting knife for precision fish work and a boning knife for making light work of butchery. Almost as essential is a proper implement for sharpening; chefs tend to favour a wet stone, but a steel also works well.

A DIGITAL THERMOMETER

If you’re often inviting people round for dinner and cooking meat, for example, it can be a worry to know whether you’ve properly cooked things through. Precision and consistency is key here, and as such, it’s time to invest in a digital thermostat, stat. These usually come with a probe that you can put into a piece of meat to tell you what the temperature is in the middle. Get to grips with the appropriate, safe temperatures for various cuts of meat and you really can’t go wrong.

MULTI-FUNCTIONAL FOOD PROCESSOR

No kitchen is complete without a sturdy, multi functional food processor. There are plenty out there that come with multiple attachments, blades and settings which make blending, slicing and emulsifying practically anything a breeze. Homemade mayo? A doddle. Cheat’s pastry? No one will know. Those brightly coloured purees you see smeared across professional plates? They’ll now be adorning yours, too.

OLD-SCHOOL POTATO OVEN

Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, nothing beats a potato cooked properly. Instead of an imprecise, gung ho approach to spuds, consider investing in a potato oven, such as these from Nisbets, for the exacting standards you should be striving for. Don’t be fooled by the name; these dedicated ovens are also brilliant for bread and perfect for pastry dishes, too. An investment, but one which will satisfy all your carb and starch needs.

TRUSTY SLOW-COOKER

How many times have you had to rush home from work and prepare something for impending guests in a slapdash fashion? The mess and chaos would surely get you fired from a professional kitchen, faster than you can shout ‘service’! Well, to avoid the last-minute dash around the kitchen, look instead at buying a slow cooker. Not only are they great for things like stews, casseroles and clear stocks, but they’re also quite energy-efficient too. And that’s what we’re all looking for right now, hey?

5 IDEAL STEPS TO CONSCIOUS UNCOUPLING

The term ‘conscious uncoupling’ has well and truly entered the mainstream vernacular in recent years. And while many use it in jest, scoff at the silly semantics, or simply long for a good ol’ fashioned divorce of strain and stress, what the idea actually symbolises may elude us.

But push all the assumptions aside of a marriage gently unravelling over bongos and green tea, and you’ll find a notion rooted in a lot of sense; that a divorce or break up needn’t be a fraught and messy affair, rather one of respect and dignity. A noble aim, we think. With this in mind, here are 5 IDEAL steps to conscious uncoupling.

SHED STIGMA

One of the reasons a divorce can turn nasty, fast, is that both parties feel a sense of shame. This comes from society’s judgment that a ‘break up’ equates to a failure. If you look at the terminology involved, of ‘failed’ marriage and ‘broken’ home, it’s no wonder that warring factions will try to attribute the blame of the break up to their partner in an attempt to alleviate this sense of stigma. But things not working out doesn’t mean you’ve made a mess of your life.

Channel elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy which concern avoiding the self-fulfilling prophecy of emotionally loaded language and negative thought patterns, and shed the stigma of describing your divorce as a loss, a break or a failure.

CHANNEL NEGATIVE ENERGY

A divorce can sometimes lead to a lot of negative energy and emotion, that’s undeniable. Rather than repress it, it’s important for you to confront this energy and channel it into something productive and beneficial.

Of course, if kids are involved, it’s imperative that your efforts to make a dignified exit from marriage places their happiness first and foremost. While you may not be feeling great about all of the upcoming change and disruption of routine, you can focus your drive for a peaceful uncoupling on your kids’ wellbeing. If you don’t have children, bring that focus on to your career or exercise regime. Try and reconnect with who you are as an individual and refocus. Simply put, don’t let negative feelings fester. Reframe them.

FIND POSITIVES IN THE PROCESS

If you’re handling much of your uncoupling – your diy divorce if you will – by yourself, the fine print can be daunting. There are so many aspects to untangle, boundaries to be redrawn, tangible elements to reassign, that things can get overwhelming. But try to find positives in each part of the process.

Perhaps you have a pet who needs to spend time with both of you; so use your shared affection for the animal to find common ground. Maybe you own a car together? Embrace the opportunity to use a bicycle more often, and when it’s your turn to use the vehicle, take a road trip somewhere meaningful. Each step of uncoupling can be loaded with sentimentality and sadness or be the opportunity to enact positive change in your life. It’s up to you which you choose.

TAKE CONTROL OF THE NARRATIVE

The early stages of a divorce can feel like your world is falling apart around you. There’s a temptation to attribute blame and throw shade at every possible opportunity. But a consciously peaceful, managed divorce shouldn’t succumb to this. Instead, take control of your uncoupling’s narrative. Describe it to friends as civil and gracious, and the likelihood for gossip to the contrary is reduced. Manage the way others perceive the divorce. Don’t invite criticism of your former partner; speak well of them, highlight their positive attributes, and others will echo this dignified sentiment.

DON’T BREAK THE BOND

After many years spent together, of herculean effort put into your shared story, a break up shouldn’t mean the breaking of a bond. There are just too many meaningful memories to savour, not sour. Keep things cordial during the process, and the likelihood of a lifelong friendship, is greatly enhanced.

5 IDEAL DISHES TO TRY WHEN TRAVELLING TO THE UAE

The United Arab Emirates, particularly its capital Abu Dhabi and the glitzy, glamorous Dubai, has seen a huge shift in recent years, from desert outpost to destination du-jour. The high-rises are record breaking, the shopping malls world renowned, the beaches pristine and the culture rich and fascinating. We’ve all heard of the Burj Khalifa. We’ve probably marvelled at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. We’ve been baffled by the 300 island, artificial archipelago. But what of the food? Though perhaps less well enunciated and explored, the country’s cuisine is no less enchanting. Don’t know where to start? Here; our 6 IDEAL dishes to try when travelling to the UAE.

AL HAREES

Though it may not look like much, al harees is a vital dish in the Emirates, and a delicious one too. A key bowl on the Eid celebration table, the preparation involves a low and slow cook of ground wheat and meat (usually lamb or chicken) in a clay pot, which eventually homogenises into one glorious unit. A ceremonial stirring with a midrib (a large piece of wood) and topping of ghee completes this rich, sumptuous dish. You may find some cooks like to sprinkle some fried onions on top, but we prefer the dish relatively unadorned, and resplendent in its humble beauty.

SHAWARMA

Though its origins most likely lie in Turkey, Shawarma (in Arabic, ‘turning’; makes sense) is often called the UAE’s favourite snack. And let’s be honest here; what’s not to love? Spit roast, slow cooked, hand carved delicious meat; warm, freshly made pitta; perhaps some pickles; a little chilli; a garlicky mayo. Phwoar.

You’ll see a spit on every street corner, and if you miss it with your eyes, the aroma permeates the air with such confidence you could locate one with your nose alone. The key lies in the spices used for the meat’s marinade (cinnamon, oregano, thyme, tahini, to name but a few) and the contrasting textures offered by the veg. Trust your instincts on this one and dive in. Bliss.

TABBOULEH

Meat. Smoke. Fat. Bread. You’d be forgiven for worrying about your waistline prior to touching down in the UAE. But the Emirates also provides lighter options in abundance. And rest assured, these aren’t apologetic side dishes designed simply to keep the veggies quiet. Nope, there’s as much effort, love and respect going into the vegetarian dishes here, and it’s tabbouleh which is perhaps the most popular.

In fact, there are strict rules regarding ingredients and portion size which dictate a ‘true’ tabbouleh. Parsley must feature, and generously – it makes up the body of the dish – with mint the only other acceptable herbal addition. Bulgar wheat is there to bring texture and colour rather than define the salad, and diced tomatoes (with perhaps cucumber and spring onion) complete the lineup. The dressing should be reserved rather than raucous, with the simple alchemy of good olive oil, lemon and salt favoured by connoisseurs. You’ll find dry spices in some versions, pomegranate even, but the finest tend towards the ‘simplicity is best’ mantra.

MACHBOOS SAMAK

A special occasion dish, this one, and well worthy of its celebratory billing. This is essentially grilled or fried fish (meat versions are available, but for us, the pesci rendition is the best) over white rice which has been rendered an inviting golden hue from an intoxicating dried spice mix and curry like sauce of onion, garlic and tomato. Should you be in town for Eid or a wedding and are lucky enough to be invited for a machboos samak, then accept the invitation with gusto. This dish is not to be missed!

A DISH OF DATES

Those native to the UAE certainly have a sweet tooth and no trip to the UAE would be complete without indulging in a bowl of sticky sweet dates. Not only are they delicious, but they’ve also been a part of the cultural lexicon of the region and an important crop in the Middle East for thousands of years. Tale tells it that Bedouins, nomads of the Arab desert, were known to survive on dates and camel milk alone because of their easily digestible, high nutritional content. Today, Muslims in the UAE and throughout the world break their fast with dates during Ramadan.

There are more than 40 million date palms in the UAE; enough, then, to take some home as a souvenir. If you’re looking for some premium dates (and you should be) you can’t beat a box from Bateel – the swiss chocolates of the date world.

LUQAIMAT

We had to finish our feast here. Traditionally served with Arabic coffee, luqaimat is a popular, significant dessert most commonly enjoyed in the month of Ramadan (though you’ll find it all year round). These are essentially crunchy, sweet dumplings (not so far removed from mini doughnuts) bathing in syrup and sprinkled with sesame seeds.

The key to their success lies in the batter; saffron and cardamom create an alluring scent decidedly appropriate to the region. For the syrup, some family recipes call for more saffron, some for honey, and some dates. We love the latter version; if you’re making your own, then dates will add that extra layer of luxury. Alternatively, take a trip to the UAE during Holy Month and you’ll find every family home whipping up a luqaimat batter. These come with a warning; irresistible doesn’t come close.

5 IDEAL TIPS FOR SCRAPPING YOUR CAR

Sometimes, you just have to let go. Have some perspective. Reframe things. Ask yourself some searching questions; should that old banger sitting in your drive be a source of eternal embarrassment or a ticket to quick cash? Indeed, once you’ve decided your long and often arduous relationship with your car has run its course, then there’s no shame in accepting it’s destined for the scrap heap.

When you’re planning to scrap your car there a few things to bear in mind to get the best possible deal from the process. These are those; our 5 IDEAL tips for scrapping your car.

KNOW THE LAW AROUND CAR SELLING & SCRAPPING

In the UK, somewhere between 6 million and 7 million cars are sold every year. A further two million are scrapped. Under the (commendably) strict environmental policies of the EU, cars must be disposed of in a particular way. Laws and regulations which were brought in to reduce the rate of theft of metals such as copper mean that it is illegal for car owners to be paid cash on the spot for their vehicles. Note that this doesn’t mean that you can’t get any money for scrapping your car, just that paper money ought not change hands. All this means is that it’s important to keep on top and in the know about changes to laws surrounding the subject.

Be aware of services who give you a quote and then offer to collect your car and pay you cash almost instantly. This is illegal, and you should avoid such arrangements. Reputable car scrapping services will recycle any parts they can on your vehicle, as well as provide you with a certificate of destruction. It’s not illegal to get paid for scrapping your car as long as all the guidelines are followed, culminating in a payment by cheque or by bank transfer once your vehicle has been processed.

PREPARE FOR SCRAPPING

If your vehicle is more or less past it, and making money on it as a whole unit looks optimistic, then you could sell its various parts separately for scrap. It may seem bleak, but it’s better than nothing, right? Before you take the leap, make sure your old car is ready to be taken apart and sold. Cars, much like that drawer next to your bed, accumulate a lot of stuff over time; some useful, some not so. Do a thorough clear-out and check every nook and cranny before you bid farewell to your wheels. Remember, too, to cancel license plates and insurance to avoid any extra costs slipping your mind later down the line. What’s more, you should use up all of the petrol in the car; that’s extra money right there which you don’t want to be donating.

BE AWARE OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER…

One of the parts of the car that many people claim is the most valuable is the catalytic convertor. But what is it and is it worth removing before your car is scrapped?

Your car relies on its fuel system and one of the additions to this system is a catalytic converter, an item which controls the harmful emissions that come from the engine. It does this using catalyst substances which in turn cause a chemical reaction mitigating those emissions and ensuring that they do not make their way out of the exhaust pipe. Without a catalyst convertor, your car is going to be pumping out hydrocarbons, nitrous oxide and carbon monoxide, all into the environment.

They might not look like much, similar to an exhaust silencer, but the catalyst convertor is a valuable part of the car. The main reason for this is that they contain precious metals including platinum, rhodium and palladium, all of which can be worth a fair amount of money if the part is opened and these materials removed.

…BUT BEWARE REMOVING IT YOURSELF

You might want to make the most money possible from your car, but for the majority of us, it’s not advised that a catalytic converter is removed from your car. The main reason for this is because the materials that are within the part, the ones that ensure that the chemical reaction occurs when the part is heated up next to the engine, are incredibly harmful.

If you are not aware of the process or the best way to remove the convertor then you’re going to put yourself at a risk of injury, which can be serious, and also of damaging that part of your car too.

If you damage the convertor when you remove it, then you are going to reduce the value that it can be sold for, which is the exact opposite of what you are going to want to do. Therefore, it’s a much better idea to trust the removal of all the parts in your car to an expert. Not only can they make sure that all the parts are removed in a safe way, but also that they are removed in a way that is going to make sure that you get the most money for your car when it is scrapped.

CONSIDER CHARITY

Several charitable organisations exist who will gladly take your car, arrange the scrapping of it and use the money for charity. If philanthropy is your thing (and it should be), then this channel should appeal. Charitycar.co.uk, giveacar.co.uk, cartakeback.com and Oxfam’s dedicated donation service are just a few of the major players here. They’ll even collect your car and give you a choice in which charity receives the donation.

5 IDEAL IDEAS FOR REPURPOSING YOUR BASEMENT

If there’s a more underrated, undervalued space in the house, we haven’t found it. Indeed, the basement is an area which could be used for so much more than storing ‘stuff’ and hiding dead bodies. We accept that some require a lot of work to bring that up to standard. Others, though, need little more than a bit of plasterboard, perhaps some new flooring and a deep clean to bring them from dark and dingy to the eminently usable in no time. With that in mind, we’ve teamed up with Updweller, a great renovation and remodeling resource, to bring you these; our 5 IDEAL ideas for repurposing your basement.

YOUR OWN BAR

If you love to have company, or to go out for drinks but don’t love the prices, then it might just be time for you to turn your basement into a bar. Installing some drinks fridges for beers and wines, optics for spirits and a little bar seating is the only commitment really required to turn your space into something truly inviting for the barflies. Shelving and, of course, an actual ‘bar’ is also going to be essential, but you can find reclaimed bars online on the cheap. Quirky additions that you would typically find in a bar like bright wall art, signed photos and other collectables add a personal touch too.

HOME CINEMA

Great for people who love watching films or binge-watching Netflix on rainy weekends, this. You’ll need to have a sturdy wall to fit a large flatscreen, but picking up a second hand one is possible. Beanbags will emphasise that low and lazy feel, and you won’t have to add too much in terms of lighting because the focus will always be on the screen.

Bear in mind that a home entertainment system is nothing without crisp, immersive sound. Though the emphasis is so often placed on visual clarity, it’s amazing what a clear sonic environment can do to your viewing experience. When it comes to sound, there are generally two main options: 5.1 surround sound and 2.1 surround sound. The former means you’ll need five additional speakers spread out around the room while the second calls for just two. To go layman on you, in a smaller space, two speakers do the trick perfectly but in a large room designed specifically as an entertainment space or dedicated completely to film watching, a 5:1 will do that dedication justice.

STUDIO SPACE

If you play an instrument, then chances are high that you’ve always wanted your own studio. The basement is the ideal place as it’s below ground and therefore less likely to impact on neighbours noise wise. That said, soundproofing is a must to optimize the quality of both vocal and instrument recordings; thick carpets will help to dampen any sound bouncing around the room, and remember to do the ceiling too.

GYM

If you already enjoy going to the gym or practising yoga then having something in your own home is going to save loads on those gym fees, not to mention a freedom from having to share the showers after each session. Result, unless that’s your thing, of course. The good news is that you needn’t splash the cash too enthusiastically on lots of fancy gym equipment. In fact, we’ve written more about affordable, space saving home workouts here; check it out!

HOME OFFICE

If you work from home, or take your work home with you, then no doubt you’re craving a home office space. Basements do tend to be on the darker side, but there are ways to brighten the space up, so don’t let that darken your productivity. Once you’ve got things looking light and airy, and assuming you’ve already got a computer and desk set up, then it’s time to focus on the finer details.

Seeing as procrastination is the antithesis of home office productivity, then it’s wise to equip yourself with the necessities to avoid constant trips upstairs. Indeed, in and amongst all those delaying tactics, one stands head and shoulders above all others; making a cup of something hot and refreshing. According to research, British workers rack up over 100 hours per year making tea, coffee and other drinks. A separate piece of research suggests we lose up to half an hour each day making hot drinks. A hot water tap will greatly reduce the amount of time we spend standing around, waiting for the kettle to boil. If productivity is the aim, it’s a no brainer.

A trustworthy, sturdy printer is another must have in the home office, saving the hassle (and incremental financial burden) of having to go and print fax or make copies of documents outside. You can usually find deals on office printers if you check online and in local stores, so there’s likely no need to splash out full whack on a brand spanking new one. When buying a printer, be sure to check that it’s Bluetooth compatible so that you can print from different devices with ease; super handy for those home offices without a fully fledged tech support team behind them.
