HOW TO HAVE A TRULY RELAXING STAYCATION: 8 IDEAL TIPS

When we think of relaxing holiday breaks, our first thoughts turn to hot tropical islands getaways or long, languid days spent somewhere on the continent, a couple of bottles deep into something crisp and local.

Think again. In fact, it’s surprising just how many of us forget that the UK is home to some of the most serene spots in Europe and beyond. Indeed, there are some truly stunning destinations here, on terra firma, including peaceful retreats, national parks, and more coastal breaks than you could shake a sandy stick at.

One thing that has come out of the last year is our renewed appreciation for long weekends in the UK. However, unless planned carefully, a staycation can become stressful. Whether you’re heading to the Highlands, Wales, Cornwall or the Cotswolds, if you want to have a truly relaxing holiday when you next book some time off, there are a few ways you can make sure that you return feeling completely refreshed and zen. With that in mind, here are 8 IDEAL tips on how to have a truly relaxing staycation.

PACK IN ADVANCE

Knowing what to pack can be stressful when travelling, especially in the UK when you can never quite predict the weather. Dressing in layers will inevitably bring a heatwave, and confidently stepping out in shorts and a t-shirt is a direct affront to the rain gods, so take no chances and cover all bases, packing wise.

You want to make sure that you have everything you need, but you also don’t want to overpack as all that excess will just weigh you down. Integral, then, to plan ahead so you can determine which items you need for your trip and which ones you can cross off the list and forget about.

Some of the most common things people forget when travelling include toothpaste, phone chargers, umbrellas, sunscreen, sunglasses (yep, even in good ol’ Blighty sunglasses are essential) and reading glasses, the latter of which we have done numerous times. A spare pair of reading sunglasses, then, is essential. The experts at Just-glasses.co.uk suggest this is a smart move to ‘’protect your eyes from harmful screen reflection’’, in particular.

We understand the irony of writing that whilst you read the words on a screen, but anyway…

BRING A BOOK

Speaking of reading, it’s one of the most relaxing things you can do. According to a study by the University of Sussex, reading – an actual book, on a paper page – can reduce stress by up to 68%. Moreover, it can relax your body physically by lowering your heart rate and easing muscle tension.

Holiday reading, however, should generally be loose and gentle, so choose something uplifting and inspiring or read about an activity you love, like travel or cooking.

REDUCE THE USE OF TECH

Relaxing is difficult in our digital world, and sometimes a holiday loses a fair amount of its purpose if it’s simply spent staring at the same old device as you would be on your sofa, at home.

In the modern age, going anywhere without a phone is probably not the best idea; emergencies do happen, after all. However, if you do want to switch off and not be bothered by work emails while you are away, try to reduce the amount of tech you take with you on holiday. Instead of scrolling through social media, take a walk along the beach or pick up a good book and escape into some captivating literature. You’ll likely come home significantly more refreshed.

FORGET THE ITINERARY

While, of course, you will have to stick to your train timetables, ticket times and so on, once you arrive at your destination, take your holiday one day at a time, free from a schedule designed with military precision in mind. There might be things you would like to see and do while you are away, but rather than committing certain days to these things, just see how you feel when you wake up. Perhaps you would rather lounge by the pool all afternoon? We feel relaxed just writing that.

LOOK AFTER YOURSELF

A staycation is a good time to catch up on your sleep debt; as such, don’t feel guilty about having a lie in. Use this time to enjoy some holiday workouts, embrace some yoga or meditation – exercise is fantastic for treating stress and anxiety.

While holidays are also about indulging and enjoying, ask if you really need that extra bottle of wine with dinner – will the hangover be worth it? Doing nothing for an entire day, eating twice as much food as you would usually and consuming loads of booze is a guaranteed way to have you feeling wobbly by the time you go home. A holiday spent overindulging every single day will leave you feeling ragged rather than refreshed at the end of it.

GO WITH THE RIGHT PERSON

Don’t get us wrong, we love our fun friends who are loud, vivacious and usually the centre of attention. However, they are probably not the best people to go on a relaxing holiday with.

Though it should go without saying, if you are going on holiday with someone else make sure they are not going to get on your nerves. Being in close quarters with somebody can occasionally lead to tensions, so if you plan to go away with a friend or relative, make sure you know that you are both compatible enough to spend all of the time together and that you both want the same things out of your holiday.

CONSIDER THE TIME OF YEAR & TRANSPORT

According to a recent survey by icarhireinsurance.com, one of the most stressful parts of a holiday in the UK is the getting there. Travelling by coach or bus was identified as the most stressful mode of transport, with driving to your destinations the lowest.

That said, anyone trying to travel on a Bank Holiday will know the stress of the long weekends rush of traffic, when millions of drivers take to the roads. And what about the stress of breakdowns and getting lost? Luckily, with a little forward planning there are ways to minimise the pain of travelling by car, simply by planning your route, your time of travel, and avoiding the busiest roads where possible.

Generally speaking, travelling during the Summer and Easter holidays are also considered a stressful time to travel. Off-peak times, in Spring and Autumn, are less likely to cause tension.

SAVE MONEY WITH SOME USEFUL HACKS

Sometimes we can’t enjoy a holiday because we’re thinking too much about our budget and how much we’re spending, which causes an unwelcome distraction to what was meant to be a relaxing time. Not to worry; here are some UK staycation tips; our 5 ways to save money on UK travel.

We’ve also written an article on how to save money on a UK staycation which includes prioritising self-catering accommodation to save money on meals and joining the National Trust, as being a card-carrying member offers loads of benefits that will help you enjoy a cheaper break. Check it out here.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT LOCATION

‘Relaxing’ means different things to different people, and ‘one person’s stress is another’s bliss’, as no one says, but should.

Anyway, choose your location with relaxation in mind. If you love to cook, consider a self catering staycation. More of a country bumpkin? Then check out our article on luxury rural hotel rental holiday rentals in the UK or these 5 remote, rural UK staycations.  Or perhaps your idea of relaxing is renting a caravan and enjoying the freedom of the great open road, in which case our article on the UK’s most popular holiday destinations for motorhome owners is worth a read.

7 TIPS FOR MAINTAINING HEALTHY ORAL HYGIENE

Did you know that the inside of your mouth contains nearly as much bacteria as there are people on earth? Or, that smiling may well help you live longer? And have you ever thought about just how important your mouth is? Nearly everything good or bad for you enters your body here, so it’s vital to take maximum care of your teeth and gums to ensure a better approach to your health as a whole.

A recent report by the Metro that references a recent survey on our lockdown hygiene habits reveals “nearly a quarter of us are no longer brushing our teeth twice a day since the arrival of Covid-19.” Moreover, “11% of those surveyed said there are days when they don’t brush their teeth at all”.

It seems that lockdown has gotten in the way of our oral healthcare, be that through less social interaction with friends and family, working from home and not bothering to get ready for the day properly, and dental practices not offering business as usual. We also reckon social distancing and wearing facemasks have made us laxer in our dental hygiene habits. After all, we don’t get close enough for anyone to smell our breath and masks are like a shield so no-one can tell if you’ve brushed your teeth yet this morning – right?

If this sounds all too familiar and you’re keen to adopt the best dental practice possible and keep your teeth, gums and mouth health in check this lockdown, then read on; here are 7 tips for maintaining healthy oral hygiene.

CHANGE YOUR TOOTHBRUSH REGULARLY

Proper brushing, for a two minute minimum, following the consumption, in particular, of starchy and sugary food items is essential for good oral hygiene. We know this.

But did you know that experts recommend you should change your toothbrush every three months, or earlier should signs of wear and tear, such as the bristles being frayed, be evident. If you continue your dental hygiene routine with a worn-down brush, you won’t be brushing effectively or, worse, you could do damage to your gums.

If you’re looking to upgrade your oral hygiene routine, consider an electric toothbrush. Many dentists extol the virtues of an electrified toothbrush one over a humble, manual one, and that’s great, but it still requires regular, attentive use. As orthodontist Dr. Reynolds tells Good Housekeeping “An electric toothbrush isn’t a magic wand. It still requires morning and night use — with around 2 minutes of brushing time — to be effective.”

DIET SMARTS

There are some ingredients and beverages whose regular consumption leads to discolouration of teeth. Wine, tea, and coffee can be particularly staining, with smoking and chewing tobacco two bad habits that cause staining and yellowing of teeth, too.

Generally, this is purely aesthetic, however. If you’re looking to avoid certain foods which lead to actual tooth decay, then it’s important that you cut down your sugar intake, in particular. Be aware that the Government recommends that ‘free sugars’ should only take up a maximum of 5% of your daily calories – that’s the equivalent of 7 sugar cubes. To put things in perspective, a can of Coke contains 9.

CUT DOWN ON YOUR FIZZ INTAKE

Speaking of fizz, though the mind immediately thinks of champagne, it’s not the only fizz which can be damaging to your teeth. In fact, the majority of carbonated drinks are a big enemy of oral hygiene. Citric acid and phosphoric acid present in colas cause harm to your teeth through the degradation of the layer of enamel present over the surface of your teeth.

Make sure to cut down your consumption of sodas and colas, as well as alcohol with bubbles, to ensure the continued health of your teeth and gums.

PRIORITISE FOOD WHICH IS GOOD FOR YOUR ORAL HYGIENE

Hey, this thing isn’t only about self-denial and asceticism. The good news is that there are things you can consume which have a positive impact on your gnashers, too.

Milk and products derived from milk are considered good for your teeth as they are rich in calcium and phosphates. You can hope to preserve and even add to the layer of enamel over your teeth by consuming these food items. Green vegetables, rich in vitamins, minerals, and fibre can also help fighting gum diseases and cavities. Finally, increased consumption of seafood and cereals is recommended; the rich fluoride content of shellfish, in particular, can contribute to healthy teeth and gums.

PAY A VISIT TO YOUR DENTIST EVERY FEW MONTHS

Most people visit a dentist only when there is a problem with their teeth or they are suffering from gum disease. But prevention is better than cure, and if you’re looking to maintain that pearly white smile, then you need to visit your dentist every few months to get your teeth and oral hygiene closely examined by a professional. They can identify any issues, nip them in the bud, and also advise you on good future dental hygiene methods.

FLOSS DAILY

Flossing is a technique so often overlooked, but it’s immensely important for maintaining healthy teeth and gums, breaking up plaque built on the surface of teeth, as well as dislodging any build ups between them. Some of these areas aren’t reachable by brushing alone.

Ffood and plaque does build up in between your teeth every time you eat and over time this can develop into tartar. This would result in widening the gap between your teeth and the space between your teeth and gums, loosening your teeth themselves.

You should exercise good oral care by flossing with waxed or unwaxed floss and consult your dentist or dental hygienist for the appropriate use of a dental floss to get the most out of it. For extra freshness, consider two pack metal tongue scrapers for sale online – scoring a bargain and getting your bathroom cabinet stocked up… What’s not to love?

OIL PULLING

This is an old Ayurvedic practice of teeth cleaning where 1-2 teaspoonful of coconut oil is taken side the mouth and swished around like a mouthwash. The oil is, then, kept inside for 10-15 minutes and then spat out. This method is believed to get rid of bacteria and toxins from your mouth to make your teeth whiter and shinier. Wow!

7 IDEAL GIFTS TO GIVE A WORKAHOLIC

Picking the perfect gift is never easy. And right now, following Christmas’ orgy of consumerism and a morale-sapping second lockdown, inspiration is running low on choosing a present which will be genuinely, warmly received.

When you’re buying a present for a workaholic, whose interests revolve around deadline meeting and dollar chasing, things are even tougher. Fear not, even for those friends or family with a one-track, work-focused mind, there are a whole host of great present ideas out there. Read on to find them; our 7 IDEAL gifts to give a workaholic.

TECH TO TRANFORM A PHONE INTO A LAPTOP

Many of Britain’s workaholics have found themselves in a bit of a pickle with recent ‘work from home’ advice issued by the Government. Suddenly, those carefully calibrated central office spaces and fully appointed desks are out of reach, and maintaining productivity from home has been hard.

To improve flexibility and versatility in the home office setting and when on the move, cutting edge tech is available to transform your smartphone into a laptop, turning it into a portable pocket computer. Buy a folding Bluetooth keyboard designed to hold your phone (and be carried in your pocket), a Bluetooth mouse, and a Type C, Male-to-Female USB cable-convertor to connect the mouse to your phone, and you’re away! Hey, you could even do work in the bath…

A MASSAGE

You’ve probably heard your workaholic friend complain about their back aching. Whether this is from stooping to kiss the boots of their superiors or, more likely, from the bad posture associated with long stretches at a computer, rest assured that there are gifts you can give which will ease their discomfort.

According to the Mayo Clinic, massage is one of the most powerful weapons in the alleviation arsenal for promoting health and wellbeing. Why not present your workaholic friend with a massage voucher for their local spa or health club to help? That, or you could invest in an ergonomic chair for them…prevention or cure, you decide!

A SUBSCRIPTION TO A MINDFULNESS APP

With your workaholic friend constantly switched on, dialled in and never off, they probably haven’t ever considered making time for meditation to ease their stress. However, stepping back from the cutthroat world of work for a daily ten minutes of relaxation and reflection can help those feeling overworked immensely. In fact, research published in 2017 by the University of Derby suggested that ‘’meditation can help cure workaholics’’, concluding that the Buddhist practice could help ‘’people de-stress from work, giving them more quality time to do what they enjoy’’.

If you’re wondering how to give the gift of meditation, then why not invest in a monthly or yearly subscription to a guided meditation app? Check out these 5 of the best mindfulness and meditation apps for more tips on the best platforms currently available on the market.

A DECENT COFFEE MAKER

We hope that we’re not being too presumptuous here, but every workaholic runs on coffee, right? For the coffee-loving friend who is addicted to work, very few things can be as meaningful as a quality coffee machine. Because, after all, there’s nothing a workaholic values more than a sense of efficiency…

A cafetière or percolator is great if you’ve got the time to manually make coffee periodically throughout the day, but for a workaholic who has constantly got their hands full, then a filter coffee machine with a ‘keep warm’ function is best, enabling them to make several cups in the morning to fuel the day ahead.

What’s more, some filter coffee machines have programmable functions enabling you to have a coffee ready-and-waiting for you when you wake up in the morning. When it comes to the best 4 cup coffee maker, on the market right now include the Brentwood 4 Cup Coffee Maker, the Aigostar Buck and Cuisinart’s 4 Cup Coffee Maker. A freshly brewed Cup of Joe has never been easier!

A LAPTOP BAG OR BACKPACK

A workaholic without a laptop is just, well, an ‘’aholic’’. As such, losing a laptop is akin to losing a limb for those dedicated to spending their lives sending emails and getting told off. Gifting your workaholic friend a laptop bag – or better still, a laptop backpack – that they can be proud of (and one that can be secured to their person!) is a great way to ensure that they can bring their laptop everywhere with them, safely and securely.

Just be aware that buying then such a versatile, wearable bag might mean their laptop shows up at your next dinner party, in the gym when you’re supposed to be sparring, or even at your wedding! Don’t say we didn’t warn you…

DAILY PLANNER

Alternatively, you could encourage your workaholic friend to take their eyes away from the screen for a little while. A pen and paper might sound old school, but sometimes the collecting of thoughts and dates on the page can really help stressed out folk gain perspective and look at things from a different angle.

And the best part? With a daily planner, your friend will still know what appointments and deadlines are fast approaching, even after they lose that laptop of theirs once again!

NOISE CANCELLING HEADPHONES

Finally, your workaholic friend may well appreciate a pair of noise-cancelling headphones. A workaholic needs peace and space to concentrate, particularly when working from home with domestic life buzzing around them, and a pair of these headphones can help enhance productivity and refresh the mind to increase focus and efficiency. They’re also great for protecting your hearing health. What? You didn’t hear us? We said that they’re also great for protect…..oh, never mind.

4 IDEAL STEPS TO AN EXPERT-APPROVED WINTER HAND CARE ROUTINE

Winter can be a magical time of year, with crisp, cold air and even the odd blanket of snow bringing feelings of nostalgia and romance in equal, enticing measure. Your skin, however, may not agree.

The cold temperatures and lack of moisture in the air can cause dryness and irritation, particularly for areas prone to exposure such as your face and hands. Facial skincare is often a big focus of our daily pampering routines, but in focusing so firmly on your face, many tend to neglect their hands.

This, dear reader, is a rookie error in the world of beauty. It’s important to make sure you look after your hands, both for aesthetic and practical purposes. From using hand cream to taking care when you wash your hands, here are 4 IDEAL steps to an expert-approved Winter hand care routine.

STEP 1: PAY ATTENTION TO HOW YOU WASH YOUR HANDS

Washing your hands over Winter can become compulsive in an attempt to avoid any nasty coughs and colds (and the other C word we dare not mention) but this can cause dryness and irritation.

To help avoid that dreaded dryness, use a gentle antibacterial soap. Additionally, when washing your hands, it’s important to use warm, not hot water. Hot water draws out the moisture from the skin, increasing dryness.

The same goes for using sanitiser and anti-bacterial gels: if possible, find one with a moisturising agent to keep you healthy and your hands happy!

All of that said, do remember that right now it’s vital to wash your hands thoroughly and comprehensively, for at least 21 seconds. Check out the NHS guide for a useful breakdown of good hand washing technique for more.

STEP 2: WRAP UP

Cold weather is particularly harsh on those exposed extremities, including your hands and fingers. Whether you’re just out for a walk or you’re exercising outdoors, it’s important to don those gloves to protect your hands from the elements.

Lined gloves are normally best, as this will provide the most protection for your skin, plus, they’ll keep your hands nice and toasty in the process! Choose sweat-wicking gloves specifically designed for sport if you’re planning on exercising outdoors for an extended period of time, to help prevent a build-up of sweat.

STEP 3: USE HAND CREAM

Moisturising is likely already part of your skincare routine when it comes to your face and body, but it’s important to remember to moisturise your hands as well. No matter how much you look after your hands, it’s still vital to give them some extra attention during the colder months. Whether you suffer from intensely dry hands, or just need a gentle moisturiser to reduce dryness in Winter, using hand cream is an essential aspect of every Winter hand care routine.

For some extra TLC, use a thicker hand cream at night. Apply just before you go to bed and allow it to soak into your hands to provide overnight care and moisture.

STEP 4: EXFOLIATE

Exfoliating your hands isn’t necessarily something you’d think to do as part of your general skincare routine, but it’s incredibly useful for keeping your skin fresh, soft and supple when it comes to looking after your skin in Winter. Exfoliating your hands helps remove dead skin, allowing for your hand cream to better penetrate the skin and provide intense moisture. And that’s what it’s all about, right?

5 OF THE BEST RESTAURANT DELIVERY MEAL KITS IN BRIGHTON & HOVE FOR JANUARY 2021

0

Ideal for those wanting a special treat for dinner during lockdown 3.

Brighton is a place so defined by summer. Curiously subdued during the festive period, it’s during festival season that the famous Sussex seaside town really comes alive. Plastic pints on the pebbles, pickled cockles from polystyrene, pennies lost to teddy pickers, parties in the park and Pride….it’s all happening here provided the skies are blue and the sun is shining.

Ahem. With the nation currently confined to their homes in the deepest, darkest recesses of Winter, things are looking a little bleak in the rainbow-flagged city. Fortunately, some of the town’s best restaurants are here to pick up the pieces, lift the spirits, and make sure that this third lockdown is spent full and content.

With some of Brighton’s best restaurants doing home delivery of their most popular dishes during this difficult time, now is the time to get involved, support local businesses and have a damn good feed in the process! Here are 5 of the best restaurant delivery meal kits in Brighton in January 2021, IDEAL for those wanting a special treat for dinner during lockdown 3.

CURRY LEAF CAFE AT HOME

Having successfully served Brightonians their delicious homemade Indian food in the first lockdown, Brighton’s beloved curry connoisseurs are now offering an option to enjoy Curry Leaf Cafe at Home once again, and we’re well and truly here for it.

Allowing you to welcome a little corner of India into your home whilst trips far flung are off the menu, the restaurant has several meal deal options on offer, with a family meal costing £40.95 – for four curries, a selection of samosas, pakoras, breads, rice…the business – all the way down to a single items off the menu or a £12.95 Tiffin Box for those self-isolating solo. A huge selection of vegan options is also available.

That, or you could go off piste and get creative with your order from the vegetarian friendly, loyally delicious menu. Either way, we’d recommend adding an extra of Curry Leaf’s famous Gulab Jamoons to your order. These traditional sweet dumplings with delicate, aromatic spicing are the perfect way to treat yourself right now.

Free delivery is available all across Sussex, on select days and requiring an order before noon to receive your meal later that day, with the Curry Leaf Cafe now offering nationwide delivery, too, for an extra £4.95. That, or you can collect from their Kemptown daily, between 1 pm and 9 pm. Meals arrive chilled; all you have to do is heat them through in the oven, microwave or on the stovetop. So good!

PETIT POIS

During the last lockdown, fabulous French restaurant Petit Pois opened up their menu to delivery and we couldn’t have been happier; we never thought we’d be enjoying frogs leg goujons and ox cheek bourguignon from the comfort of our living room, and we bloody loved it.

This week, thank the lord, they’ve announced that they’re back, albeit in a slightly reduced format. Petit Pois are now offering their incredible Sunday roasts for home delivery, alongside a bespoke selection of French charcuterie and cheese, and it’s a steal. A choice of pork belly, leg of lamb or aged rump of beef, with all the trimmings, will set you back just £15, with vegetarian and kid’s options available, too. Macarons of the day and a Chocolate and Baileys truffle to finish? Well, it would be rude not to.

Collection is available anytime between midday and 10 pm, every Sunday, with delivery to BN1, BN2 and BN3 postcodes secured via email: [email protected] or via petitpoisbrighton.co.uk.

CIN CIN AT HOME

Though the trend for daily, freshly made pasta with refined but generous sauces has taken over London completely, it’s yet to permeate the UK’s other foodie cities in quite the same way. Brighton, though, is rightly proud of Cin Cin, the premier purveyors of the good stuff here, and a more than capable match for any of London’s top pasta slingers.

During the first lockdown back in April, the Hove branch of Cin Cin rolled out an ‘at home’ offer to include home delivery; a bespoke box (beautifully presented, by the way) containing enough for a hearty meal for two.

This January, the Cin Cin Dine at Home meal kits follow a similar format, but it’s been expanded to meet the hungry needs of the city. You can now order a 5-course (plus olives, cured meat and focaccia), restaurant-quality chef’s menu for £35 a head; a £25, 3-course box for two which includes arancini, handmade pasta and two portions of one of the restaurant’s incredible desserts; a large sharing lasagna for £24, available in meat or vegetarian, which could easily feed 6 people, or a smaller lasagna for £12. You can even order a house mixed negroni!

What’s more, they’ve opened up their perfectly appointed wine cellar and are selling bottles at retail price during this tough time. As anyone who’s been to Cin Cin will know, the food is consistently superb; prepare to be impressed if you haven’t.

Collection is available from Western Road, Hove, Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays, between 12 pm and 3 pm. Delivery days are allocated by postcode; click here to check when your day is.

DISHOOM

Back in November 2020, cult Indian comfort food restaurant Dishoom announced that they would be opening their first delivery kitchen outside of London, with the foodies of Brighton & Hove delighted to learn that it would be here, in Hove. Available to order via Deliveroo’s ‘Brighton Editions’ page, you can get your fix of their famous house black daal, jackfruit biryani and all sorts of other treats which have made the restaurant group so popular.

Delivery starts at midday every day, and ends at 10:30pm. If there was a better way to lift your lockdown, we haven’t written about it!

WILD FLOR TO YOUR DOOR

Wild Flor, on Hove’s Church Road, is one of the most acclaimed recent additions to Brighton and Hove’s exciting restaurant scene. Settling into an evening with their confident, classic French cookery and superb wine list was one of last year’s biggest treats; you’d always leave squiffy and extremely well fed, make no mistake.

Last lockdown, the restaurant started their Wild Flor To Your Door service, bringing the warmth of those cherished neighbourhood restaurant vibes into your home.

This January feels like the perfect time for their hearty, comforting French fare once again, and we’re so pleased that the restaurant are offering collection and delivery of a 3-course, finish-at-home meal every Saturday, costing £25 per person. This week’s menu sees pumpkin soup and Caerphilly cheese scones (what a pairing!), followed by braised pork shoulder with green peppercorns, sage and sides of January cabbage and pink fir potatoes. And to finish, it’s chocolate mousse with clementine caramel. The restaurant have a wicked way with desserts; this one’s not to be missed!

You can also order from their ‘Bread and Provisions’ menu on Deliveroo. Here you’ll find wonderful sounding puff pastry tarts such as ‘A Slice of Pissaladiere’ which is billed as a delicious anchovy, black olive and caramelised tart served with a Cornish salad – sounds like a slice of puff pastry heaven to us!

Delivery is only available locally; simply enter your postcode on the Wild Flor Shop’s page to check if you’re eligible. Alternatively, order and collect is offered. This one sells out fast, so get your order in early if you’re keen!

5 IDEAL LUXURY GIFTS FOR A BABY SHOWER

Babyshower? But we’re in a pandemic, we hear you cry. Thanks to Zoom, virtual baby showers are a very real thing and one can celebrate the impending arrival of a baby with friends and family from the comfort of your own sofa until we’re once again allowed to meet and embrace.

If you’re not quite sure of the details of this American tradition, the main idea behind a baby shower is that the mother is ‘showered’ with gifts – for her and the soon-to-be new arrival.

If you’ve been invited to such a joyous event recently, online or otherwise, then you might be wondering what kinda of gift is appropriate. Well, a practical present is a great place to start; something that is essential to a new parent like a breast pump, overnight diapers or baby blankets, though not exactly exciting, will all be warmly received.

Other newborn baby gifts like cute clothesm teeny, tiny shoes, plastic bottles, and bamboo weaning sets are, of course, also wonderful ways to spoil the mother-and-baby-to-be. However, if you want to go that extra, extravagant mile, then check out these; our 5 IDEAL luxury gifts for a baby shower.

A CONTEMPORARY ROCKING CHAIR

In the words of Coco Chanel, “Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury.”

Enter the rocking or nursing chair, which is all about comfort – a space where both parent and baby can be comfortable and spend time bonding. It’s no secret that rocking has a soothing effect on babies, helping to calm them down or get them to sleep. Moreover, research suggests that there are a number of heath benefits for us grownups, too.

There are lots of chic and stylish rocking chairs out there that would make the ideal gift; consider styles designed with longevity in mind – that will look good in the home after the baby has grown out of feeding. Until the next one is born, of course!

A BEAUTIFUL BASSINET

Some babies may be fussier than others and find it difficult to sleep. Many new parents lose sleep, too, or may not have the time to relax when the baby starts to fret. A rocking bassinet is a welcome present that is beneficial for both the baby and their parents. As we mentioned, typically, babies enjoy being rocked to sleep, which is why they like being carried when they get fussy. The gentle rocking motion of a bassinet can calm them down and give parents some respite too. Result!

SKINCARE PRODUCTS

Holly Harper, head of inspiration at Not On The High Street, recently told the Independent that “we are finding that lots more gifts are being bought for parents rather than their baby’’.

If you’re looking to spoil a new mum-to-be with a luxurious treat just for her, then what about some luxury skincare products designed specifically for expectant mothers?

In their roundup of the best baby shower gifts parents actually want, the Independent suggests the The Mama Mio Tummy Rub Routine. Here’s what they have to say about it: “Treat the bump to this luxurious routine that helps prevent stretch marks. It includes a scrub, butter and oil to keep growing skin soft and smooth”.

They also recommend “My Expert Midwife mum-to-be collection”, saying “New mums will thank you profusely for this gift. These oils, sprays and balms are developed by midwives to help mums in areas that they will really need it’’.

What could be more luxuriousness than a spot of pampering for the mother-to-be?

A LUXURY HAMPER OR GIFT SET

If you’re indecisive and can’t settle on just one idea, then consider a luxury hamper, full of all kinds of bespoke goodies aimed at making the mother-to-be and their baby’s life as easy as possible.

Though pre-made hampers and luxury baby gift sets are available, making your own bestows that personal touch on proceedings, and by doing so, you’re able to personalise the contents to suit the recipient.

If you are going to create your own hamper some ideas for things to include are:

  • Baby care items, like lotions and nappy rash creams
  • Baby books, for reading to the little one, as well as educational books for Mum about surviving those first few months!
  • Baby toys
  • Baby clothes
  • And of course, a few treats for mum, like a bottle of champagne, specific skincare products, and perhaps even a voucher for a massage!

A DESIGNER DIAPER BAG

A baby bag is a parent’s best friend when travelling with their little one. You can be sure that this gift will be well used for a long time, from birth all the way through to the toddler years and perhaps even into preschool days.

However, not all diaper bags are created equal. Moreover, you’ll want to consider if the style and colour of the bag will still be in fashion in years to come.

Enter the designer diaper bag. What might have once sounded preposterous is now hip and even, whisper it, mainstream. It seems all designers are doing the baby bag, with their logo splashed all over it, from Gucci’s Supreme Diaper bag priced at £885 to Fendi’s Changing Bag priced at £1,350.

For a more affordable designer tote, we’re fans of COACH’S range of designer baby bags, especially their ‘Baby Messenger Bag’. Priced at £395, it’s sleek and stylish with tons of different compartments and all the extras that a parent could ever need for all those baby essentials. It has a pullout changing pad, wipe clean interiors and other thoughtful touches, too. For more inspiration, checkout this roundup of designer baby bags by Parents.com.

For a bag with longevity, consider gifting an iconic Louis Vuitton Neverfull with a baby bag insert to transform it into a diaper bag. Then, when the baby is all grown up, the parent will have a designer bag for life.

5 OF THE BEST WAYS TO EXPLORE A NEW COUNTRY FROM THE SAFETY OF YOUR SOFA

Ideal for those stuck indoors craving escapism.

Hey, we wish we could be writing this article sans the ‘from your sofa’ part; just as much as you wish you were reading this piece on the way to the airport, rather than from that sofa, we’d venture.

But current travel restrictions, closed borders and ongoing inadequate government responses dictate things differently. We’re all having to get pretty creative with our escapism right now, with holidays far-flung being taken virtually, linguistically and imaginatively until real trips are once again permitted.

For now, this is the next best thing; our 5 of the best ways to explore a new country from the safety of your sofa, IDEAL for those stuck indoors craving escapism.

LEARN THE LANGUAGE

Have you ever felt like you’ve only scratched the surface of the country you’re visiting? Like you’ve just engaged with fellow travellers and ordered solely off menus with English translations? That you’ve felt a sense of separation and distance from the culture you were hoping to experience because you couldn’t speak the language?

Yep, we’ve all been there. If you’re looking to truly engage with a country, its culture and its people, then a grasp of their lexicon will enable you to do so. Understanding the language doesn’t only let you converse and make friends, it also gives you an extraordinary insight into how a place ticks.

So, while you’re once again locked down, why not make it your mission to get to grips with the nuances, slang and conversational quirks of a country you love?

Doing so is possible via several popular apps currently seeing an exponential rise in use; Duolingo leads the way, and its gamified interface is great for getting some beginner vocabulary under your belt. Should you be looking to improve your grammar, Rosetta Stone feels like a more serious platform, but in all honesty, conversational skills are most comprehensively improved by engaging with native speakers.

There are free language exchange websites which enable you to do just that, via Zoom, Skype or Google Hangouts. You might even make a new friend in the process.

Even if you don’t have the time to take a deep dive into a new language, memorising just a few useful phrases can help nurture convivial communications in the country you’re visiting. The travel experts at Egypt tours, who offer exclusive deals on accommodation and catering, recommend that above all else, you should ‘’learn a few Arabic words so you can speak to the locals when exploring the country’’.

Wise words, indeed; now how do we say them in Arabic?

AIR BNB ESCAPISM

Though it’s a cold, hard case of living vicariously, we’ve found a peculiar comfort in checking out AirBnB, AirBnb competitors and other such apps’ listings during lockdown, appraising properties in the destination we’re dreaming of, and imagining where we’d be having our dinner and putting out feet up, should we be staying there. Yep, it sounds sad, but escapism is hard to come by right now.

To get your mind racing regarding somewhere a little closer to home, check out these incredible Air Bnb rentals for a unique stay away in the UK. Give it go and then get back to us!

COOK THE CUISINE OF A COUNTRY AT HOME (OR ORDER IN!)

One of the most fun parts of any holiday is taking a cooking class or having a drinks mixing class booked to learn about the country’s food culture. Sadly, this isn’t possible right now, but online cooking classes in a whole variety of cuisines are available.

Alternatively, you could endeavour to teach yourself using a good old-fashioned cookbook. Though we’d be here all night if we recommended all of our favourites, here’s just a few we particularly love and which are especially exhaustive and educational about a single country’s cuisine:

  • For Italian food: ‘The Essentials of Italian Cooking’ by Marcella Hazan
  • For Thai: ‘Thai Food’ by David Thompson
  • For Sichuan: ‘The Food of Sichuan’ by Fuschia Dunlop
  • For Indian: ‘Madhur Jaffrey’s Indian Cookery’ by Madhur Jaffrey
  • For Spanish tapas: ‘Barrafina: A Spanish Cookbook’ by Nieves Barragan Mohacho, and Eddie and Sam Hart
  • For Portuguese (or more specifically, the food of Lisbon): ‘Lisboeta’ by Nuno Mendes
  • For Mexican: ‘Tu Casa Mi Casa’ by Enrique Olvera

TAKE VIRTUAL TOURS

Many of the world’s premier attractions have had to be nimble, dexterous and adaptable to fast moving times in order to keep afloat and relevant whilst not actually being visited in the flesh. This has led to many offering virtual tours online, keeping their doors open via the World Wide Web for inquisitive travellers to explore.

Here are a few we’ve been enjoy lately…

WATCH TRAVEL DOCUMENTARIES

Speaking of watching videos, BBC iPlayer, Netflix and a whole host of other streaming platforms all offer a treasure drove of travel documentaries which will satiate your thirst for travel, at least for a little while.

For now, sadly, much of the joy of discovering new cultures is going to be found via our TV screens. We particularly love both Parts Unknown and No Reservations by the late, great Anthony Bourdain, who shows a compassionate touch exploring the world through its food. He’s so sorely missed, but you can still watch Bourdain’s food travel shows on Amazon Prime and Netflix, and feel connected to cultures and people on the other side of the world.

David Attenborough’s exploration of the natural world is also much needed when the most nature we’re currently interacting with is our pot plants. Right now, A Perfect Planet is on every Sunday on BBC One, and is fascinating.

Alternatively, YouTube boasts thousands upon thousands of travel channels and vlogs. Some of our favourites include Sorelle Amore, the Budgeteers, and Shizuka’s Food Adventures in Japan. Let’ be honest, though; sometimes it’s more fun to stumble across the less-polished, down-to-earth travel videos which haven’t been given that particular sheen all the bigger-budget vlogs seem to boast. Often it’s more fun just to blast a random search into YouTube and dive in!

5 OF THE BEST RESTAURANT DELIVERY, MEAL KITS & COLLECTION IN HACKNEY, LONDON, FOR JANUARY 2021

Ideal for those wanting a special treat for dinner during the new lockdown.

Because there really is only so much tinned sardine on toast we can take. We miss restaurant food, not having to cook (and wash up) for ourselves several times a day, we miss good wine out of carefully considered glasses…but most of all, we miss that sense of occasion that a great restaurant meal brings.

If we’re to enjoy that feeling again, then it’s so important you support your local restaurants right now, who are doing all they can to keep going during these trying times. Fortunately, some of East London’s finest eateries are currently offering takeaway and delivery of some of their iconic dishes, perfect for welcoming that sense of occasion into the domestic setting. With that in mind, here are 5 of the best restaurant delivery, meal kits and collection in Hackney, London, for January 2021.

THE DUMPLINGS STORE BY THE LAUGHING HEART

We’re so glad we can still eat chef Tom Anglesea’s eclectic, playful cooking during lockdown. Currently, Hackney restaurant The Laughing Heart are offering delivery and pickup of ‘handmade dumplings and luxurious accompaniments’, including red prawn and Tamworth pork Xiao Long Bao, kombu vinegar, aged soy sauce and much more. Rest assured; it’s bloody delicious!

With pick up and delivery running Wednesday to Sunday from 5 pm until 9 pm, it’s best to keep an eye on their Instagram feed (@thelaughingheart_london) for announcements of when slots go live. The LH Cave is also available for all your fine wine needs, selling packs in bottles of three.

Order via the Big Night app, which is currently supporting some of London’s best restaurants and paying their delivery drivers properly, too.

MIEN TAY

We were saddened to hear that Song Que, our favourite of the Vietnamese restaurants in Hackney, had announced that from 7th January, they were shutting their doors to delivery until this thing blows over.

But we’re all in need of some comfort right now, and there’s nothing more nourishing than a bowl of noodle soup from Mien Tay, the superb Vietnamese stalwart on Kingsland Road just down the road from Song Que. Though you can’t go wrong with Pho, Hanoi Tai Lan style with raw slices of steak added to the broth at the last minute, we’re all over their Central style Bun Bo Hue here, which is funky with shrimp paste and assertively spicy. The perfect pick-me-up for the doom and gloom of January, no doubt about it.

Order during January via Deliveroo.

PIDGIN

This January, from Thursday to Sunday, you can order a three course meal from the gloriously inventive Pidgin for £25 pp. Each Sunday evening at 9pm, their ordering system goes live for the following week, and it really is a case of fastest fingers first here; harder than snagging a Glasto ticket or an Ocado slot, for sure.

Those who do get through are rewarded with thoughtful, fantastic cooking, and a constantly updated menu. This week sees a truffled Winter squash soup, a Bebere spiced lamb shoulder with smoked anchovy salsa verde, and a hay infused rice pudding. Wowzers. For a real treat, the restaurant are also offering wine pairings from their cellar. Oh, and the whole affair is called ‘Homing Pidgin’, which made us smile.

Be aware that, for now, this one is collection only, from the restaurant, which is just off Hackney Central station.

Check out their website to place an order.

OMBRA

South Hackney neighbourhood Venetian-Italian restaurant Ombra have expanded their Pastificio & Alimentari neighbourhood shop, and are now offering pick-up and delivery of essential items, including homemade pasta, pasta sauces, mortadella sarnies, huge sharing tiramisu and much more, via their website and a dedicated Whatsapp number. They’ve also opened up their cellar and are offering a huge selection of fine Italian liquor for delivery, too.

Pick up is available within an hour of ordering, between 1 pm and 6 pm, daily. Delivery within 2 miles happens between midday and 3 pm, and between 5 pm and 7 pm, daily. For those living further afield, a select few items are now available for nationwide delivery. Great news!

What’s more, on Sundays, Ombra are doing generous portions of lasagna, fit for three people, for £30 – the cut off for ordering this hugely popular dish is 6 pm on the Saturday prior. Secure your slot early, as these sell out fast.

Check out the page for their dedicated OMBRA Pastificio & Alimentari shop for more information and to order.

LEROY / ROYALE

Leroy, the superb Shoreditch wine bar which wants to feed you really, really well, is currently offering rotisserie chicken, sides, salads and sauces from their new delivery and collect service ‘Royale’, serving as much of East London as they can manage.

You can get your hands on the good stuff on Thursday and Friday evenings between 5 pm and 9 pm, Saturdays 1 pm to 9 pm, and Sundays 1 pm to 6 pm. Right now (as of Wednesday, January 13th) after huge demand, ordering options are on hold, but do keep an eye on their Instagram page for updates (@royale-london) and order via their website here once they’re up and running again.

5 WAYS TO ENSURE YOUR BABY IS HEALTHY, HAPPY & LOVED IN THEIR FIRST FEW MONTHS

We’re sure that we don’t have to tell you twice; your whole world changes when you have a baby. You’ve got this incredible (and often exhausting) new responsibility and you’ll want to do everything you can to protect and love your child.

Though of course a parents’ instinct and intuition are invaluable in the early months, a little advice from the experts is always useful, too, for reassurance and guidance. With that in mind, here are 5 more ways to ensure your baby is happy, healthy and loved in their first few months.

SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS

We all know how little sleep new parents get. So little, in fact, that we imagine that if this wasn’t such an invigorating read, you might have dropped off by now…

Hey, you! Back in the room….

Though a fragmented night’s sleep is part and parcel of being a new parent, experts suggest that it’s vital you try and sleep while the baby sleeps, enabling you to catch up on some lost zeds; you need to look after yourself so you can look after them, after all. is

To ensure your baby doesn’t wake up from throwing their covers off, throwing all your hard work at getting them down out of the window, too, an organic baby sleeping bag is a game changer, as they come in different thicknesses to suit the seasons. These bags can help reassure some of the temperature issues concerning your baby’s bedding, allowing you both to get the rest you need.

HEALTHY FOOD HABITS

Making sure you are feeding your baby everything it needs is, of course, a must for their wellbeing. For the first six months, you will be using breast milk or quality baby formula before introducing solid foods.

It’s important to remember that, initially, how much they eat is less important, and it’s more about simply getting them used to eating. Slowly introducing your baby to new foods and a variety of vitamins and fibre helps them learn healthy eating habits which they’ll use for life.

TOYS AND GAMES

The more you interact with your baby, the more you’ll be helping them learn in the future and develop into a well-rounded person later down the line. Toys and games are a great way to do this, and you can both enjoy them (hey, there’s no shame in admitting you love chewing on Sophie the Giraffe, too).

Games that involve hands are simple but effective, as you are engaging with your baby, keeping their attention, and encouraging them to physically interact with their surroundings. They’ll learn valuable lessons about touch, being tactile, dexterity and balance, even at their young age. It’s amazing when you think about it!

BONDING

There’s nothing quite like the sacred connection between a parent and their child. Most feel an implausibly strong bond with their baby even before they’ve given birth. That said, there’s no shame if you don’t feel that connection straight away; give yourself time and don’t put pressure on yourself. The more you care for your child, the more your bond will grow. Get skin-to-skin contact as soon as you can; cuddles, smiling, and eye contact are also important and hugely meaningful for both parent and the little one.

READING

Even before a baby can speak, they’ll enjoy hearing you read to them. From an early age, it gives them a feel for language, enabling them to understand and respond to different pitches and get a sense of the rhythm of language, too.

What’s more, and most importantly, it’s how they pick up language in the first place. As such, reading can help you both bond, will develop emotional wellbeing and get your baby moving on the road to speaking.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Your time with your newborn is so special and will go unbelievably fast; cherish every moment!

If you’re working from home while raising your newborn, then do consider these 6 tips for balancing your business and your baby for some useful insights into how to do both as effectively as possible.

HOW TO SLEEP THROUGH THE NIGHT WITHOUT WAKING: 5 LIFESTYLE TIPS

Can’t a guy/gal/gender-neutral-pronoun catch a break? The stresses and strains of 2020 have seamlessly carried over into the new year with not a moment of let up, and it’s safe to say that all this turbulence seems to carry over from the daytime into our night’s sleep, too.

If you’ve been waking regularly in the night, then firstly, you’re not alone. Back in August, it was reported cases of insomnia in the UK had sharply risen during the coronavirus pandemic, and with the situation even more distressing now, we can only imagine that Brits’ quality of sleep has worsened.

Secondly, it’s important to be aware that there could be a medical explanation for your sleeplessness; you may be suffering from an underlying medical reason which could explain why you’re regularly waking in the night, such as sleep apnea, acid reflux or bladder issues.

But if you’ve eliminated these as a reason, then it could well be your lifestyle choices keeping you up at night. Today, we’re here to examine those and offer some solutions. Here’s 5 lifestyle tips on how to sleep through the night without waking.

DEVICE DOWNTIME

If you’re wondering how your lifestyle is affecting your sleep and how to sleep through the night without waking, then first look at your devices. Not actually look at them; that’s the problem, here.

Working from (and spending all our time at) home has inevitably led to a huge rise in the nation’s screentime, both during our working day and as a way of filling our downtime. After the first lockdown, it was reported that our screentime had soared, with Brits spending half their day staring at their phones, laptops or the TV.

And though we realise the irony of cautioning against this whilst we’re so keen to keep you here with us on this page, all of that screentime is also wreaking havoc with your sleep. We’re sure you’ve already heard of blue light, which screens emit strongly, disrupting your brain and body’s ability to prepare for sleep by blocking the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin.

But that’s not all; regularly doom scrolling and reading about the current perilous state of the world just before bed is sure to disrupt any sense of calm you’d cultivated. It’s also likely to be on your mind when you wake in the night, making it harder to fall back to sleep.

As such, experts recommend imposing a ban on all devices for at least an hour (and ideally more) before bed, enabling you to instead focus on a healthy, hygienic bedtime routine.

SAY NO TO LONG NAPS

Let’s be honest here; we all love a nap. Until, of course, we’re once again awake in the middle of the night, searching for patterns in the ceiling and for answers to some of life’s burning questions. During those dark hours, that daytime nap suddenly feels like a very big mistake.

Though, according to the Sleep Foundation, a nap of between ten to twenty minutes shouldn’t pose any problems (is that all we’re allowed?!), they caution that any more than that could cause problems with your sleep cycle. This is particularly true for naps taken after 2 pm, which ‘’may affect your ability to fall asleep at a reasonable time later that night, potentially disrupting your nocturnal sleep cycle’’.

If you are going to nap, follow the expert’s advice; keep it short and do it early.

KEEP A REGULAR BED & WAKING UP TIME

The way you prepare for bed each evening and the manner in which you wake up both have a huge impact on how you sleep. Following a routine for each, involving consistent falling asleep and waking up times, even at weekends and when you’re on holiday, can dramatically improve your quality of sleep.

Should you be wondering how to sleep through the night without waking, then it’s important to defer to the experts. When Somnologists talk about ‘sleep hygiene’, they are particularly referring to the importance of this consistency. This is because we are creatures of habit, and our brains quickly get into a rhythm regarding our sleep-wake-cycle. As anyone who has woken up naturally at the exact same time a few days in a row will attest, humans have a remarkably precise body clock; treat it with respect by going to bed at the same time each night, and you’ll be rewarded with a quality night’s rest.

The way you wake up also matters; avoid that snooze button at all costs; it can be hugely disruptive to your internal body clock. And ideally, you should get out of bed shortly after you wake up, opening the curtains or better still, going for morning walk, to allow natural light to wake you up, fully and comprehensively.

If you’re keen for more tips on how to wake up well, check out this advice on how to feel more energised in the morning. You won’t regret it!

CUT BACK ON THE CAFFEINE & ALCOHOL

We love a cup of freshly brewed coffee to start the day and a glass of Beaujolais to finish it as much as the next person, but the science regarding both beloved tipples’ effect on our Zzzeds can’t be ignored. If you’re walking into 2021 determined to sleep better, then it’s a prudent move to cut back on both. Or at least, enjoy them responsibly and with particular attention to what time you’re imbibing.

Though you may think alcohol makes you sleepy and coffee wakes you up, they actually harm the quality of your rest when consumed close to bedtime. If you’re going to have a glass of wine, do so before or with dinner and not later in the evening. Alcohol works as a diuretic, dehydrating you and increasing your need to go to the loo; two things which are certainly not conducive to a good night’s sleep.

And though you may feel like you can’t get going without a coffee, nutritionists now recommend that you shouldn’t have your first cup of Joe until at least mid-morning. Drinking it too early messes with the regulation of your body’s cortisol production, and ultimately, your circadian rhythm. Hold off for a couple of hours after waking to mitigate this effect.

DON’T PANIC IF YOU DO WAKE

Of course, as we age, the idea of achieving a full, uninterrupted, undisturbed night’s sleep becomes more and more far-fetched. This is because over the years, our bodies produce less of the sleep hormone melatonin, leading to a more fragmented night’s sleep.

If you do happen to wake up in the middle of the night, the key here is not to panic. Remain calm and appreciate that even laying in bed, in the dark, is restful and restorative. And if you really can’t fall back asleep, get up, have a walk around and a change of scene, perhaps read a chapter of a relaxing book, and you’ll more likely fall back to sleep when you return to bed. Good luck!

HOW TO STOP SMOKING WHILE WORKING FROM HOME: 5 TIPS

Ideal for those turning to cigarettes to cope with stress during this difficult time.

Those old movies or episodes of Mad Men with ashtrays on the desks and plumes of smoke filling the office air; they made cigarettes at work look a little glamorous, don’t you think? The reality couldn’t be further from the truth; smoking kills 80’000 in England and over 100’000 a year in the UK, accounting for a fifth of total deaths here annually.

That said, since the rise in home working, it’s been all too easy to reach for a cigarette and light up from the comfort of our desks. With stress levels across the country higher than ever, smoking has also provided a false sense of relief from the pressures of this difficult time.

It’s not all doom and gloom. The good news is this; coronavirus has actually led to huge numbers of people endeavouring to quit, with more than a million giving up smoking since the pandemic hit. An incredible number, indeed, but if you’re still struggling to knock the cigs on the head, then perhaps this might help; here’s 5 tips on how to stop smoking while working from home, IDEAL for those turning to cigarettes to cope with stress during this difficult time.

LEAN INTO YOUR TRIGGERS

Within the Buddhist lexicon, and adopted by mindfulness teachers and meditation practitioners the world over, is the concept of ‘leaning into’ your fears and worries. The idea is that, rather than let stress stop you in your tracks and overwhelm you, you face up to your problems, stand a little while within them, and in the process gain a better understanding of what makes you – and your fears – tick.

Much of the same mindset can be applied to your smoking triggers – times of stress and upheaval which cause you to compulsively reach for a cigarette. Don’t avoid situations and triggers associated with smoking entirely; it’s simply not a sustainable approach right now, when we’re all confined to the fall walls of home. Rather, learn to identify the onset of a trigger and how to tame it.

If you normally have a cigarette after a meal, for example, replace this with a more beneficial habit, such as having a cup of tea, taking a brisk walk or even brushing your teeth. Should a heavy dose of pent up energy after a long day’s work have you needing a smoke to loosen up, instead find a new outlet for that energy; invest in a boxing bag or stationary exercise bike, or on the flip side, try meditation and yoga. Lean into those triggers and you may very well tame them.

KEEP YOURSELF OCCUPIED & DISTRACTED

Just as much as stress can trigger smoking, so can boredom, which so many have a surplus of right now.

With the chance to smoke at your desk or give yourself a cigarette break at any time of the day, the temptation to smoke has often felt stronger during this period of homeworking and increased downtime. To avoid this urge, it’s best to plan your day out with precision and discipline, setting targets for the day more stringently than usual, both in terms of your work deadlines and your personal life.

Keep yourself distracted with positive practice like exercise, cooking and spending more quality time with friends or family members you share a house with, rather than succumbing to the most common home working distractions, such as social media and online shopping, which tend to sap productivity and leave you in a somewhat complacent and suggestive frame of mind.

TRANSITION SLOWLY WITH NICOTINE REPLACEMENTS & ALTERNATIVES

The Government recently launched a new resource, All Our Health, aimed at helping healthcare professionals promote good health and wellbeing in the UK. Regarding smoking cessation, there has been a recent shift in opinion concerning the use of E-cigarettes to help those trying to overcome nicotine addiction.

Interestingly, All Our Health advises that; ‘’Leading health and public health organisations including the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), British Medical Association (BMA), Cancer Research UK and the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine agree that although not risk-free, e-cigarettes are far less harmful than smoking. Based on the currently available evidence, PHE and the Royal College of Physicians estimate the risk reduction to be at least 95%’’.

Combined with other help out there and available, such as local stop smoking services, the NHS Stop Smoking Hotline and nicotine replacement alternatives like gums and patches, E-cigarettes could be a useful tool at your disposal.

TRACK YOUR PROGRESS

Documenting the scale of your smoking can also help to put things in perspective. There are plenty of apps out there to help you monitor, moderate and minimise your smoking. Some take the form of daily motivational messages, hypnotherapy and mindfulness advice. Others help you track how much you’ve been consuming, and how much it’s cost you, both in pounds and in health.

Some of the best apps designed to help you quit smoking right now include Smoke Free by David Crane, QuitNow!, and Quit Tracker.

Alternatively, if you don’t fancy sharing your health and wellbeing with Big Data, then simply writing a journal dedicated to nicotine cessation and taking note of your daily progress can help hugely, too. Here you can list times and triggers to give you a proper overview of the problem and the most successful ways you’ve found to tackle it.

CHERISH THE POSITIVE CHANGE

We left this one ‘till last deliberately.

Say it out loud so you know how it feels…’I don’t smoke’. Sounds kinda nice, doesn’t it? Embracing and cherishing a little positivity around quitting can be the push you need to keep it going. Particularly when you’re working remotely and not seeing friends and family so much, it’s up to you to self-motivate as much as possible.

So, notice and take pride in the physical changes; a better complexion, brighter teeth, breathing lighter and exercising easier…the list goes on. Go further and acknowledge the money saved; conservative estimates put the cost at £250 each month, or £3000 a year. That’s money you could divert to more wholesome, happy pursuits like a holiday (or two, or three). Result!

THE BOTTOM LINE

Smoking is, quite simply put, a deadly vice. Despite the health warnings emphasising how smoking can aggravate your risk to COVID-19, many people find tobacco a useful coping mechanism for worry and stress. Take note of these tips discussed to steer clear of nicotine abuse while working remotely, and look forward to many smoke free years to come.

6 WAYS TO REMOTELY SUPPORT ELDERLY LOVED ONES WHO ARE FEELING LONELY

In recent years it’s been called a silent killer and an epidemic, with Science Daily reporting that ‘’social isolation and loneliness could be a greater public threat than obesity’’.

Here in the UK, it’s an issue which is particularly concerning for the elderly. The facts are, frankly, heartbreaking; the Campaign to End Loneliness estimate that over 500’000 older people go at least six days a week without speaking to anyone at all, with two fifths of all older people (nearly 4 million) saying that the TV is their main source of companionship.

As well as the obvious impact on wellbeing, this so-called loneliness epidemic can also lead to significant health issues, too, linked with an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure, as well as a greater danger of cognitive decline and dementia, and in severe cases, early mortality.

But how can you help elderly loved ones during what has been a uniquely trying time, particularly if they’re expecting to be shielding for the foreseeable future? Whilst there’s no doubt it’s a fine balancing act between keeping your distance and maintaining a level of intimacy, here are a few ideas which might help; our 6 ways to remotely support elderly loved ones who are feeling lonely.

ACKNOWLEDGE THE ISSUE OF LONELINESS OUT LOUD

It takes courage to admit that you’re lonely and missing companionship, and sometimes, an elderly loved one will be reticent to admit that they’re struggling, particularly if they once played a role of responsibility and seniority in your life. But acknowledging the presence of loneliness is the first step to remedying it, so be brave and raise the subject in a gentle, compassionate way.

Ask if your elderly loved one has been hearing from their friends as much recently, or if they receive calls from family as regularly as they’d like. Be alert to changes in behaviour and appearance which might indicate a worsening situation of isolation; if they’re shutting themselves off, taking less pride in their appearance or not eating properly, it could be signs of a low mood or depression developing.

According to a report published in 2017 by the NHS titled ‘Mental Health in Older People’, ‘’Nearly three-quarters of older people (72 per cent) think that having more opportunities to connect with other people (e.g. joining local activity groups) would be the best way to help people who are experiencing mental health problems’’.

Once the issue is acknowledged, you can help facilitate these connections, how best to do so we’ll get onto a little later.

PROFESSIONAL HELP IS OUT THERE

Loneliness and low mood in the elderly are often linked, so whilst it’s important to offer companionship to elderly loved ones, it’s also important to steer them in the direction of professional help if that’s required.

There’s a danger that low mood and depression can sometimes be misconceived as primarily a young person’s problem…and it’s certainly true that the stiff upper lip of a certain generation means discussing such feelings frankly and openly can be tough for all concerned. Depression and low mood were once seen as a weakness, and carried a level of stigma which could represent a barrier to getting help still to this day.

But according to the Mental Health Foundation, it’s a worryingly prevalent issue in older generations. They say that ‘’Depression affects around 22% of men and 28% of women aged 65 years and over, yet it is estimated that 85% of older people with depression receive no help at all from the NHS’’.

The NHS recommend that ‘’As well as having opportunities to connect with other people, more than a third (35 per cent) felt that talking therapy such as counselling would best help older people with anxiety and depression.’’

The experts particularly encourage counselling and other talking therapies, saying that ‘‘Research has found older people respond extremely well to talking therapies; the recovery rates for patients aged over 65 years of age who completed a course of talking therapy through the Increasing Access to Psychological Therapies programme (IAPT) were shown to be positive’’.

Talking therapies can be found through the NHS via IAPT, or if your elderly loved one is struggling with social anxiety, in particular, which is causing reticence and withdrawal, then group therapy might help once social distancing rules are loosened in the coming months. Such sessions are facilitated by a trained professional and are often specifically populated with like-minded (and like-aged!) people from the community. BE ALERT TO PARTICULAR OCCASIONS & TIMES OF YEAR

There will likely be particular times of year, holidays and occasions which might be especially tough for an elderly person who is suffering from loneliness. Some of these will be universal, such as Christmas or Easter, and some will be deeply personal, such as the anniversary of the death of a loved one.

These can represent distinctly trying occasions for an elderly relative who is isolated or alone, having to shield or be kept apart from the majority of their family, so be alert to these times and when they’re approaching on the calendar. Even if you can’t be with your loved one in person, make sure you make yourself available for compassionate, considerate communication remotely, on the phone or via video call. Which brings us to…

FACILITATE (OR GIVE) SOME BASIC COMPUTER LITERACY TRAINING

So much socialising has moved online lately, due to the ongoing restrictions demanded of us by the coronavirus pandemic. Unfortunately, this has tended to ostracise those who aren’t conversant in Zoom, FaceTime, texting and social media.

Helping an elderly loved one gain confidence in computers and the internet is one of the best ways you can help them combat loneliness from afar; sure, it might be particularly trying conducting a lesson over the phone, but once they have a grasp of social media and how to video call and message, a whole new channel of socialising will have been opened up.

The UK’s largest charity for older people, Age UK, also offer free training courses in computer literacy for the elderly. Once restrictions are lifted and a level of human contact is once again permitted, do check out their dedicated website and find out if your nearest Age UK offers training courses

HAVE A PREDICTABLE ROUTINE OF CONTACT

Having a scheduled routine of contact between the two of you can provide real comfort and reassurance for those suffering from loneliness. The wonders of modern technology have made channels of communication so versatile and convenient that calls and messages are often made at the last minute and impromptu.

But for those with less confidence in making video calls and sending texts, this random nature of contact can be frustrating and stressful. Endeavour to establish a routine for your communications with an elderly loved one – say at 6pm every evening – to ensure a comforting sense of predictability. Having something to look forward to each day like a phone call can be really meaningful for someone suffering from loneliness.

BEFRIENDERS

Various UK mental health charities, as well as those dedicated to the elderly, facilitate volunteer ‘befrienders’ services, which help connect a ‘buddy’ with an elderly person. The two then share regular phone calls, visits (when permitted under COVID-19 guidelines), and assistance with transport and chores.

If you’re living far from an elderly loved one and unable to provide first-hand support, then the aforementioned Age UK, the charity Independent Age and the Royal Voluntary Service, all offer such schemes.

THE BOTTOM LINE

If you live in another country or city, or the current coronavirus restrictions mean that you can’t provide as much personal, face-to-face support as you’d normally like, then rest easy that there are still ways to ensure that an elderly parent, relative, neighbour or friend has the companionship they need and deserve.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR GUEST BEDROOM AS INVITING AS POSSIBLE: 4 IDEAL STEPS

If you love to host family and friends, then you’ll know that feeling of pride when your guest declares how soundly they slept last night. Preferably, as they tuck into the elaborate, buffet style breakfast that you’ve laid on for them…

How reassuring is it to know that if your friends or family stay over, you’re able to accommodate them in a beautiful guest bedroom? But to truly be the hostess with the mostest, and to give the impression you’ve gone that extra mile (but in the most effortless way possible), there are a few things you can do to ensure your guest has a truly congenial stay.

It’s not just about providing a bed for the night. Security and comfort are as key as the ready assembled chest of drawers that you buy for the room, and clean, bright linen plays as much of a part in the guest experience as your choice of diffuser does. What we’re trying to say is that the finer details count. Leave nothing to chance with these 4 IDEAL steps to making your guest room as inviting as possible.

THE HOME & HOTEL EXPERIENCE

Making your guest feel ‘at home’ is part and parcel of being a good host. But to be a great host, you have to go that extra mile. By making your guest feel at home whilst simultaneously providing them with a hotel room experience, you’ll tick all the boxes.

Keep a stack of towels, spare pillows and blankets in the wardrobe so that they can pick and choose whether they want extra layers. Roll towels up hotel-style and add the towels to a basket by the door; you could even get a proper trunk for the room to store the linen, too.

Go further, with tongue firmly in cheek, and provide a stack of magazines and perhaps the day’s newspapers for your guest to enjoy. We might stop short at providing guests with a Nespresso machine, though; that would be a little too clinical.

In terms of the finer details of the bed itself, we’ll save ourselves both some time and point you in the direction of these tips for achieving that 5 star hotel bed at home. Because it was five stars you were after, right?

MAXIMISE SPACE & CUT DOWN ON CLUTTER

This is a guest room, not a dumping ground for the accrued clutter and chaos of the home. As such, the room itself should be streamlined and minimalist, making the room look bigger and offering a feeling of luxury to your guests.

That said, you shouldn’t cut back on storage altogether; your guest is still going to need somewhere to unpack. A simple, slimline wardrobe, elegant armchair and reading lamp should suffice, along with side tables on either side of the bed. A bedside notepad and direct line to the kitchen are, of course, optional.

Where possible, get rid of all the surplus items that needlessly take up floor space; we’re focusing on minimalism here, after all. Wall mounted shelves rather than a bookcase, and mounted, horizontal radiators further up the wall, too, both help you make the most of all available floor space

MATTRESS MATTERS

Of course, all this frippery is irrelevant if your guest doesn’t have a wonderful night’s rest. And all of this rests on the quality of your mattress. This is one area of the guest room where you shouldn’t cut corners or cost.

If room allows it, you should go for the biggest size possible; there’s nothing better than stretching out in a bed that’s not your own and really getting comfortable. Or is that just us? Do make sure you can accommodate a larger mattress without the room feeling cluttered, however. As a rule, a Super King Size clocks in at 180cm x 200cm, King Size at 150cm x 200cm and Double at 135cm x 190cm. Any smaller, and you might as well donate your bedroom to your guest for the night.

Every guest will have a different preference for how soft and sinkable the mattress is, but it’s wise to err on the cautious side here, as some may suffer from back issues. A semi-firm to firm mattress is best; memory foam is great for a single occupant but tends to not offer enough support at the core, and if your roll call of guests is regularly changing, it may not be ideal. Instead, hybrid mattresses are versatile and offer excellent, adaptive support.

PROVIDE BASIC TOILETRIES

Place next to the basket of rolled-up towels, it’s a cute, playful and ultimately, accomodating move to add a small basket of toiletry products to the room. At its most basic, this is a neat little gesture which will remind your guest that they are just that, a guest. And if your guest has forgotten any items (let’s face it; this always happens) it’s a generous and greatly appreciated thing to do, too. A baseline inventory of toiletries to provide should include shampoo, conditioner and soap along with a small toothbrush and toothpaste.

Now that you’ve got your guest room feeling properly inviting, care to invite us round to stay?

8 COURSE VEGAN MEAL BOX BY GAUTHIER

Now, for a change of pace. Gauthier, the previously Michelin-starred, highly regarded French fine dining restaurant from acclaimed chef Alex Gauthier, has always been well known for its excellent vegetarian and vegan cooking. Though it’s not an entirely vegan restaurant, vegetables, more often than not, take star billing here, and the chef treats plant-based ingredients with the same reverence as a fillet steak or lobster tail.

Vegan foodie pulses quickened, then, when Gauthier announced that the restaurant would be delivering a vegan finish-at-home 8-course meal nationwide, every Friday, in January 2021.

Each box sees dishes changing weekly. Sometimes, it’ll be a classic French vegan feast, other times Japanese or even a meal themed around the food of Marrakech. It costs £75, and is designed to be enjoyed by a family of four. This Friday (15th January) the feast focuses on Japanese cuisine, and includes Maki rolls of avocado and ginger, buckwheat noodles in a dashi broth with shiso, and yuzu curd with soft sable amongst other delights.

For a proper, restaurant meal and a massive treat to boot, Gauthier is your guy. What’s more, you can add wine-pairing into your at-home order for an extra £32, if you’re really intent on spoiling yourselves.
