Discover Your New Signature Scent With Perfume Terminology

Perfumes are personal – they tell stories, invoke emotions, and create unforgettable impressions. Finding the perfect fragrance that matches your personality and style can be a gratifying and revealing journey. However, the path to discovering your signature scent can be rather daunting when confronted with the complexities of perfume terminology.

Today, let’s spray a little around the place, in the hope of demystifying the world of perfumery, breaking down the jargon, enabling you to make educated choices when selecting your next fragrance.

Notes

When you delve into the world of perfumes, the term ‘notes’ will inevitably be one of the first you encounter. No, we’re not discussing music, but the intricate blend of scents that make up a perfume. They are often described as top/head notes, heart/middle notes, and base notes.

• Top/Head Notes: These are the first scents you experience when you spray a perfume. They are often fresh and light and are typically the most volatile, evaporating quickly, often within 15 minutes.

• Heart/Middle Notes: After the top notes have evaporated, the heart notes take centre stage. They provide the main body of the scent and are usually well-rounded and fuller than the head notes. Heart notes last longer, usually for a few hours.

• Base Notes: The base notes are the foundation of the perfume, providing depth and solidity. They interact with the heart notes to create the full body of the fragrance, lingering long after the perfume is sprayed – for several hours or even an entire day.

If you’re looking to sample the full spectrum of fragrances, try Parfumery or somewhere similar, where you can get samples sent to you without having to splash out on a whole bottle.

Sillage

Sillage (pronounced as see-yazh) is a French term used to describe a scent trail left by the fragrance wearer. It’s the aura or the attractive, scent-filled wake that lingers in the air when you walk past. If a perfume has powerful sillage, it has a significant presence, often noticed by others in the room.

Longevity & Concentration

Perfume longevity refers to how long a fragrance lasts once it is applied. Fragrances with high longevity can last 6-8 hours or more, though this depends not only on the perfume but also your behaviour when wearing it (don’t rub your wrists together, by the way!).

On the other hand (or, rather, in tandem with) perfume concentration refers to the proportion of aromatic compounds in a fragrance. There are five main concentrations:

• Parfum or Perfume: This has the highest fragrance concentration, typically ranging between 20% to 40%. They usually have high longevity and silage.

• Eau De Parfum (EDP): This has the next highest concentration, ranging from 15% to 20%. An EDP typically lasts for about 4 to 5 hours.

• Eau De Toilette (EDT): This has a fragrance concentration of between 5% to 15%. It is lighter and great for day wear.

• Eau De Cologne (EDC): This has a lower concentration of fragrance, between 2% to 4%, and lasts up to 2 hours.

• Body Spray/Mist: These have the lowest concentration, with only 1% to 3% of perfume oil, and usually last for up to 2 hours.

Understanding how these different elements contribute to a fragrance can indeed empower us in our quest for the perfect signature scent. When selecting a perfume, consider the type of scent you enjoy, the longevity desired, and the sillage you prefer.

Remember, it’s not just about the fragrance itself, but how it interacts with your own unique body chemistry to create a scent that’s distinctly you. But how do you choose a perfume that is the perfect reflection of you?

Identify Your Preferred Scent Family

Perfumes fall into one of several scent families – floral, fresh, oriental, and woody. Each category has a distinct character:

  • Floral: As the name suggests, these fragrances are dominated by notes from various flowers such as rose, jasmine, or lily of the valley. They are often sweet and romantic. The iconic Dior J’adore represents a classic white floral blend, whilst Jo Malone’s Peony & Blush Suede offers a more contemporary, soft floral approach. For those seeking something more dramatic, Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry combines florals with rich almond and cherry notes, whilst Frederic Malle’s Portrait of a Lady showcases how a rose fragrance can be transformed into something darkly sophisticated.
  • Fresh: These fragrances are refreshing and zesty, composed of citrus notes (like lemon, grapefruit), fruit notes (like apple, berry), or green notes (like fresh-cut grass). Penhaligon’s Quercus offers a quintessentially British take on a fresh, citrus scent, whilst Creed’s Silver Mountain Water presents an innovative fresh aquatic profile. For a more affordable yet equally refreshing option, Clean Reserve’s Rain combines watery notes with subtle florals. Acqua di Parma’s Fico di Amalfi captures the essence of Mediterranean summer with its blend of citrus and fig notes.
  • Oriental: An outdated term no doubt, but an official category of perfume nonetheless, these are rich, warm fragrances with dominant notes such as vanilla, musk, cinnamon, and other spices. Afnan 9pm falls squarely into this category with its sweet, spicy profile, as does the iconic YSL Opium. Lattafa Raghba, with its rich amber and oud composition, exemplifies the deeper end of this family, while Xerjoff Erba Pura demonstrates how a modern interpretation can incorporate bright fruity notes alongside the traditional warm base. For those seeking a more affordable option in this category, Al Haramain Amber Oud Gold Edition offers a similar luxurious profile.
  • Woody: These fragrances are characterised by warm, dry, and intimate aromas such as sandalwood, cedarwood, or patchouli. Le Labo’s Santal 33 has become a modern classic in this category, whilst Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s Grand Soir offers a sophisticated blend of benzoin and warm woods. For a more intense woody experience, Initio’s Oud for Greatness combines oud wood with spices and nutmeg, creating a powerful statement scent. More subtle but equally compelling is Byredo’s Mojave Ghost, which pairs woody notes with gentle florals for a softer interpretation.

Don’t Rush The Sniff Test

As the guys at PERFAME so sagely advise, when testing a new perfume it’s important to remember that perfumes are layered. Upon first spritz, you’ll smell the top notes, but these quickly evaporate to make way for middle and base notes. For this reason, it’s essential to take your time. Allow the perfume to settle on your skin for a few hours to let the full range of notes come through.

Consider The Occasion & Climate

The occasion and climate you’ll be wearing your perfume in can also guide your choice. For example, lighter, fresh fragrances are often suited to daytime wear or warmer climates, while heavier, oriental or woody scents can be great for autumn or winter months, capturing the scents of the season succinctly, or glamorous evening events too.

Take Your Body Chemistry Into Account

Body chemistry plays a pivotal role in how a perfume smells once applied. Factors like diet, skin type, and pH can alter the scent. What smells wonderful on a paper tester or your friend might not have the same allure when applied to your skin. Trying before buying is always the way forward.

The Bottom Line

Choosing the right perfume can be a beautiful journey of olfactory discovery. Perfumes tap into our emotions, memories, and personal style in a way that few other accessories can. By understanding your preferred scent profiles, considering the setting in which you’ll be wearing your fragrance, and testing on your skin, you’ll be well on your way to finding the scent that truly compliments you.

8 Perfect Christmas Gift Ideas For Golf Lovers

Yep, we’ve done it. We’ve dropped the C Bomb, and with just 97 sleeps until Christmas, perhaps you should start thinking about the festive season, too?

If you’ve got a golfer in your life, you may be wondering what to get them for Christmas. They just might have all the clubs and all the gear, have already been on all the golfing getaways, and are in possession of a lifetime membership to the local club. So, what can you put under the tree?

Fear not. We’ve teamed up with Santa’s very best caddies to bring you the perfect golfing gifts for the golfer that has everything.

The Majors: In Pursuit Of Golf’s Holy Grail by John Feinstein

Books can be thoughtful presents and are perfect for those cold winter nights. The Majors: In Pursuit of Golf’s Holy Grail by John Feinstein is a riveting read for any golf lover. Feinstein explores the intense pressure felt by golfers at major championships, making it an excellent choice for those who enjoy a deep dive into the world of professional golf.

Personalised Golf Balls

We love a personalised gift. It’s a little extra touch that really seals the deal. So, with this in mind, we highly recommend getting a set of personalised golf balls from the good folks gimmeballs. Their customisation process couldn’t be simpler, and their services are dead cheap. Using a UV printer, they can put anything you want (within reason – golf balls are only so big) on a golf ball. From wedding invitations to photos to declarations of undying love, it’s super easy to get a personalised golf ball for the golfer in your life.

But what makes personalised golf balls such a good gift?

  • They won’t go missing. The chances are your golf-mad friend or loved one will have golf balls already, but as you may well be aware, those balls can go missing at the swing of a club. Give them a personalised golf ball, and they just might want to keep an eye on it, so to speak. If they do use the balls during their game, they’ll be easy to identify on the green or if the shots do go wide.
  • Colourful designs. Golf balls don’t just come in standard white – there are some very colourful balls out there, including yellow, green, pink, and blue. You can even get balls that are divided into two colours.

Personalised Golf Clubs

For another swing at the perfect customised gift idea, why not try a personalised golf club? There are plenty of services that can engrave a message or design into a golf club. So, just as with those personalised golf balls from a few sentences above, you could give your friend or loved one a club with a little extra something to make their day.

Plus, a golf club is much less likely to go missing than a golf ball, so if you want a customised gift that lasts, a golf club is a great choice.

Golf Practice Net or An Indoor Putting Green

Though this gift might be taken the wrong way, for those golfers who aspire to perfect their swing, a golf practice net is an excellent choice. It’s the gift that will allow them to practise their skills at home, improving their performance for the next time they hit the green. Portable and easy to set up, this can be a valuable tool for any golfer.

Perhaps even more likely to be well received, an indoor putting green can be a fantastic gift for the golf enthusiast who doesn’t always have time to get out to the course. Compact and user-friendly, these can be set up in a living room, garden or even office, allowing your golf lover to hone their putting skills at any moment.

Golf-Themed Cufflinks

For the golf lover who is also a fashion enthusiast, golf-themed cufflinks can make an elegant and fun gift. These small but stylish accessories often come in a variety of designs including miniature golf clubs, balls, or tees, adding a touch of charm to any formal attire.

Golf Experience Days

The idea of an experience day is to enjoy a new experience, one you might not even have thought possible. There are an increasing number of experience day vendors, from the originators over at Red Letter Days through to Buyagift and more.

For your golfing friend or loved one, there are plenty of amazing experiences available:

  • a 60-minute lesson with a PGA professional – help them improve their game and technique with a professional golfer! If you wanted to, you could even join them in the lesson and learn more about their chosen sport by getting a lesson for two.
  • Romantic break with unlimited golf for two, including an overnight stay in a hotel.
  • Underground golf: play on the world’s first underground golf course in Gwynedd, North Wales.
  • Virtual golf experience – play on your choice of up to 190 courses, including famous courses like St Andrews, without having to travel there by using a virtual golfing simulator

There are plenty of golf experience days for you to choose from, all of which would be ideal gifts.

Novelty Golfing Gear

If all else fails, there’s always novelty. You don’t have to splash out to make a splash with golf-ball shaped ice cube trays, for example. You could make a personalised golf ball into a gag gift with a humorous picture or funny joke like “Just Tap It In!” or “19th Hole Expert.”

In costume shops, you can find novelty golf ball eye-glasses, or you can wear a hat designed like that elusive last hole.

If your golfing friend or loved one is a particularly snappy dresser, you could always go for cufflinks in the shape of golf balls, golf clubs, cups and flags, and so on.

There are so many humorous golfing items to choose from that we couldn’t possibly list them all here, but any one of them is sure to bring a smile to the recipient’s face.

Golf GPS Watch

If you’re looking to splurge a bit, a GPS golf watch is a high-tech gift that any golf lover would appreciate. Brands like Garmin and Bushnell offer watches that provide accurate distance readings to the front, back and middle of the green. These smart accessories also track a player’s shots, and some even offer maps of thousands of international golf courses.

The Bottom Line (Or Should That Be ‘The Final Hole’?)

So, if there’s a golf lover in your life, we think this guide is a pretty good map to finding them the perfect gift. Altogether now; fore!

5 Ways To Avoid Turning Into A Seasonal Sloth This Autumn

It’s official. The leaves are starting to fall and Summer is over. Gone are the hazy evenings sipping Aperol, beach holidays and going ‘out-out’ on weeknights. Autumn is just around the corner, the time of year when it’s harder than ever to motivate yourself to workout and far too tempting to watch Netflix with a tub of Ben and Jerry’s.

Little wonder that people have been proven to be consistently less active as the days get shorter and that in winter, we develop a lower level of happiness called ennui. This is basically low-level dissatisfaction, which we get when it’s cold, wet and dark, which in turn leaves us lethargic – and with no desire whatsoever to hit the gym.

Worry not though, as the experts at Neat Nutrition have shared their top tips on how to stay motivated to workout this season; leaving you feeling positive and energised, just in time for Christmas indulgences…

Biebs Is Out, Mozart Is In

The start of a new season means it’s time to bump Despactio off your workout playlist and fill it up with some new tunes. It’s long been accepted that there is a direct emotional link between music and the motivation to exercise and genres usually associated with this include fast-paced Pop, Dance and Hip Hop.

However, recent studies have shown that classical music is the answer, having been proven to lower stress, whilst driving feelings of relaxation, resulting in a positive state of mind and lifted mood.

Swap The Pj’s For Athleisure

Wouldn’t it be easier to get out of bed in the morning and get in a workout session if you were already dressed? In actual fact, you are far more likely to exercise in the morning if you sleep in your workout gear.

Yes, it might feel unhygienic, but no one needs to know, and it can mean the difference between you getting up and working out, versus hitting snooze and rolling over. You’ll be showering post-workout anyway, and think of all the time you’ll save wrestling with your Lycra at 6am.

Plan A Post Workout Meal

Planning your post-workout meal can lead to a more successful workout. As many of us are motivated by food, visualising a delicious meal, snack or shake could be the key to getting up and making it through a tough session.

Plan a nice dinner or after a weekend workout, meet friends for a healthy brunch, or if you are on-the-go heading to workout, re-fuel with a protein shake with peanut butter, chocolate and banana. This tastes like a ‘treat’ but is really a healthy and effective way to help repair and recover.

The Future Is Orange

Investing in some new gym kit can be the most effective incentive to workout. After all, who doesn’t want to show of a bright new pair of kicks or sculpting leggings?

However, make sure you pick colours wisely, as studies have shown that colours can greatly affect mood, with green being the most calming and yellow being the ‘happiest’ of colours.

It’s orange that you need to look out for though, proven to be the most motivational colour of them all, building energy, motivation and enthusiasm.

Create A Rewards Card

Treat rewards like a coffee club card, whereby each gym session or workout counts as one ‘stamp’. Once you have collected ‘ten stamps’ for example, reward yourself with something you really want. Whether that’s a new handbag you have had your eye on, or tickets to a gig.

Studies have shown that working towards an end goal with a desired reward can be the most effective form of motivation. Not only this, but you’ll feel a great sense of achievement.

Lose The Booze! Here’s How To Drink Less This Autumn

Winter nights spent in the pub, sitting by a roasting fire with a glass of red or a Guinness. Summer days whiled away with friends, family and ‘freshments, hoping the sun never sets and the cup never empties.

Then autumn rolls around with its mulled ciders and warming whiskeys, not to mention a run of holidays just crying out for a glass in hand; Halloween, Bonfire Night, and Thanksgiving, if you’re from the other side of the pond. Oh, and let’s not forget those autumn walks, leaves crunching under foot and inevitably ending up at a country pub. Mine’s a Hot Toddy, please.

Indeed, there are so many occasions on the horizon that may tempt you into enjoying a warming alcoholic drink or a generous pour of wine. And with much of the socialising in Britain revolving around the pub, it can be all too easy to allow one to turn into two, and two into ten.

Should you be keen to enjoy these seasonal, quintessentially British experiences without the quintessential British loss of control, then you’ve come to the right place; here’s how to lose the booze and drink less this autumn.

Adjusting Your Alcohol Attitude

If you’re reevaluating your relationship with alcohol, then rest assured; you’re not alone. Millions of people are opting for a low or no alcoholic lifestyle and have begun identifying as “sober-curious.”

Indeed, it’s been reported that around 30% of the country is choosing to abstain from alcohol in 2021, with younger people the most likely to be cutting down or out. Should you be looking to follow suit, then you’ve already completed the first step; acknowledging that you’re dissatisfied with the way yours and alcohol’s relationship has progressed.

Adjusting your attitude towards alcohol into something more sceptical and suspicious, rather than the chaotic, romantic approach us Brits so often have with the stuff, can really help you develop a more healthy relationship with booze.

Focus On What Happens To Your Body

According to experts, you only need one week off alcohol to notice positive changes beginning; you’ll feel more energetic, you’ll have a more healthy appetite, and you’ll appreciate more wholesome food choices.

And after a whole month off? Your sleep will be fully regulated, your skin will be clearer and the fat around your liver will be actively reducing.

Yep, it’s a good idea to focus on the benefits of cutting down or giving up; the extra time and money you’ll have, the improvements in sleep, skin and mood…the list goes on and provides something to fix your attention on during those days when you’re tempted to cut loose.

Discover Alcohol-Free Drinks

Let’s not beat around the bush here; tap water can be boring. And boredom can lead to drinking. Luckily, there are so many drinks that can replace your evening glass of wine which feel just as much of a treat.

Pubs and restaurants are becoming increasingly well stocked in alcohol-free versions of popular drinks and interestingly, Scientific Focus reports that “People are more likely to choose a non-alcoholic beverage if there is a greater selection on offer than drinks containing alcohol”

In fact, many non-alcoholic options are more tempting than that mulled cider or pint of Guinness we spoke about earlier. Come autumn, we’re particularly fond of Rochester Ginger Drink, a non-alcoholic ginger beer with one hell of a kick, offering a fiery smack on the lips and a lingering on the tongue that other non-alcoholic drinks so often lack.

Kombucha is equally as good if you need a drink with the complexity and funk of a biodynamic wine or cloudy cider. You could even consider making your own, using autumnal flavours; think apple, cinnamon and honey kombucha, a pumpkin spiced version and even a spiced pear tipple…delicious stuff.

Keep your fridge stocked with some low-or no alcoholic drinks. If a craving strikes, you have something tasty to keep that urge at bay.

Focus On A Winter Weekend Away…

Not spending money on alcohol for a month or two can reap big dividends for your bank balance, particularly if you factor in the hidden costs of drinking, too. You know, all those Uber rides, hungover takeaways, rehydration sachets, effervescent tablets that do nothing…

Why not put aside the money saved on drinking and save it for a winter weekend away, offering a tangible incentive to go home rather than going hard? You know it makes sense.

…And All The Other Things You Buy

Come autumn, you may be umming and ahhing about buying that new winter coat that will define your wardrobe for months, a new pair of boots or some long johns to keep you warm when temperatures drop. It’s a sad truth that most drinkers wouldn’t blink twice at forking out the same amount on a few glasses of something strong.

The same amount that would be frittered away down the pub of an evening could be spent on something constructive and long lasting. So, why not savour that investment rather than blowing it on another night that you probably won’t even remember? Cheers to that!

Living Your Most Fiscally Responsible Life: Financial Products You Should Know About

Financial wellness should be regarded as a vital component of a fulfilling and balanced lifestyle. Just as we invest time and effort in maintaining our physical and emotional health, nurturing our financial health can considerably enhance our quality of life.

And you know how else you can enhance the quality of your life? By sticking with us here at IDEAL as we explore various financial products that could aid in achieving your lifestyle goals. Let’s dive in.

The Role Of Savings In Lifestyle

Savings should not be viewed as just amassing a pile of cash but as a strategic means toward realising your lifestyle dreams. Whether you’re looking to take that dream holiday, purchase a home, or cultivate your hobbies, diligent savings can open avenues for actualising these desires. But, to take your savings strategy to the next level, understanding different financial products is key.

Types Of Financial Products

The path to so-called ‘financial security’ often seems labyrinthine. Financial products are the key waypoints on this journey. They are tools designed to either grow your wealth, insure against risk, or facilitate transactions. Here are a few of the most common ones at your disposal:

  • Banking Products: The foundational blocks of financial management, banking products include current accounts, savings accounts, and Certificates of Deposit (CDs). Current accounts are used for daily transactions, while savings accounts and CDs yield interest over time.
  • Investment Products: These are designed to grow your wealth over a longer period. They include stocks, bonds, and mutual funds; each carries differing degrees of risk and potential return. More complex investment products, like derivatives and options, are suited for more experienced investors.
  • Retirement Products: These financial vehicles help prepare for your life post-retirement. In the UK, retirement products aren’t just limited to the state pension. Personal pensions, self-invested personal pensions (SIPPs), and employer-sponsored schemes, like the defined contribution pension scheme, are all vital components of a comprehensive retirement strategy. A pension app can simplify managing these investments by allowing you to track contributions, growth, and withdrawals in real-time.
  • Insurance Products: Insurance products serve as a defensive strategy against life’s unpredictabilities. This category encompasses life insurance, health insurance, home insurance, and vehicle insurance, each providing coverage for specific life risks.
  • Loans and Credit Products: Loans, credit cards, and mortgages allow you to make big purchases or meet sudden financial needs. They need to be handled responsibly due to the interest and potential fees involved.
  • Foreign Exchange (Forex) Products: These involve trading one currency for another, providing businesses and investors with the ability to operate across borders or take advantage of changing exchange rates.
  • Tax Efficient Products: Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs), including Cash ISAs and Stocks and Shares ISAs, function under a tax-free or tax-reduced wrapper, making them an enticing option for many savers and investors in the UK.

ISAs vs. Savings Accounts

Balancing between ISAs and savings accounts can be a tough call. Each comes with its pros and cons. For instance, ISAs offer tax-free interest payments, but they have a yearly limit. Savings accounts, on the other hand, offer unrestricted access to your savings but could have taxable interest. To dig a little deeper, check out this detailed comparison by MoneyFarm on the difference between ISAs and saving accounts.

Investment Products For Long-Term Goals

While savings accounts and ISAs are great for short-term goals, for long-term lifestyle goals, you might consider investment products like stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. These instruments, while carrying more risk, have the potential for higher returns over time.

Risk & Reward

Understanding risk and reward dynamics in financial products is essential in financial planning. Higher potential rewards often come with higher risks. Your tolerance for risk should align with your lifestyle choices and long-term goals. Always remember, your investments should serve your lifestyle aspirations, not the other way round.

Retirement Saving Schemes

When planning for a fulfilling lifestyle, it’s crucial not to overlook your future. Retirement saving schemes are financial products specifically designed to secure your lifestyle in your golden years. Products like 401(k) in the U.S., or the pension schemes in the U.K., are essential long-term financial planning tools. These products not only provide you with a steady income during retirement but also come with tax benefits that can boost your overall savings.

Cryptocurrencies

In the realm of modern investment options, cryptocurrencies have emerged as a new, disruptive player. Bitcoin, Ethereum, and others, have shown a substantial growth potential, albeit with high volatility. While they shouldn’t constitute the bulk of your portfolio due to their risky nature, you might consider having a small percentage of your portfolio in cryptocurrency as a part of your diversified investment strategy.

Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs)

Real Estate Investment Trusts are companies that own or finance income-generating real estate. By investing in a REIT, you’re buying shares of the company and thus, a piece of their real estate portfolio. They can be a way to get involved in real estate without the hassle of owning physical properties.

Understanding Inflation

Inflation has a profound effect on your savings and investments. Over time, inflation can erode the purchasing power of your money. Therefore, the real return on your investments, after adjusting for inflation, is a crucial factor to consider when choosing between financial products.

Insurance Products

Finally, insurance products are another important piece of the financial puzzle. Health insurance, life insurance, and property insurance can protect you from unexpected financial shocks, giving you peace of mind and stability as you work towards your lifestyle goals.

The Bottom Line

We wish it wasn’t so, but (until the revolution, at least) achieving a fulfilling lifestyle requires sound financial strategies. From simple savings accounts to more complex investment products like mutual funds, stocks, and even cryptocurrencies, it’s essential to understand how each product fits into your financial landscape.

And with due diligence and sound advice, you’ll be well on your way to financial wellness and the lifestyle you aspire to live.

Easy DIY Projects To Get Your Home On Trend For Autumn 2023

As searches for ‘DIY projects’ are up 800%, home and garden experts share easy, cost-effective, and on-trend DIY to try this bank holiday

Despite this being the first summer many have been able to enjoy without lockdown restrictions, the home is still a top priority for Brits, as Gtech has noticed a staggering 825% increase in searches for ‘diy projects’ compared to this time last year.

However, with the cost of living crisis continuing, it is no surprise that Brits are also looking for affordable solutions to refreshing their home décor, with searches for ‘cheap diy projects’ also up by 100%.

With August bank holiday providing the perfect long weekend for using your tools, homes and garden enthusiast Lucy Rhead, at Gtech, has shared 5 easy DIY projects to help you incorporate this year’s autumn/winter trends into your décor.

Upgrade Your Feature Wall

Feature walls are by no means a new way interior trend, but rather than simply painting one wall a block colour, elevate your space by using shapes, such as an arch or circles. Adding colour and shape to one part of a wall is a cost-effective way to create a sense of purpose to your space, as it will frame furniture and show distinction between parts of your home.

Whether you want to opt for stencils or drawing your shape by hand, masking tape is a must for this DIY project, ensuring that you stay within the lines and have a clean edge to your design.

If you want to incorporate this autumn’s must have colours into your design, go for earthy tones such as terracotta or chocolate brown, and don’t be afraid to experiment with a few different shades at once.

Retile & Refresh

An impactful yet relatively straightforward DIY project, tiling a wall in your bathroom or kitchen is a fantastic way to refresh and modernise your interior. Plus, tiles are also an easy way to incorporate patterns into your home, which have seen quite the comeback this year.

If you are replacing existing tiles, start by using a chisel to create a hole in the centre of your tile. Then, after loosening and removing the grout around each tile, use a hammer as well as your chisel to chip out the tile from the centre. Remove any dried adhesive remaining on your wall by gently tapping it with both tools. Once you have a smooth, flat surface, you will be able to apply your new design.

Upcycle For Added Ambience

Likely a result of the new appreciation that many people experienced for their home during the pandemic, one popular interior trend for autumn is to create intimacy and cosiness within the home. A great way to do this is by upcycling any old furniture or household items that are being neglected or you are thinking of replacing, to give them a new purpose in your home.

For example, an old step ladder, if sanded and redecorated, could become the perfect addition to a reading nook, complete with soft lighting and beautiful book covers. Candles are a great way to add ambience to a home, so why not create a bespoke candle holder by upcycling an old teacup, or even reusing glass jars that are waiting to be recycled.

Get Creative With Storage

By thinking outside the box with storage, you can enhance your home’s style while also keeping your space organised and tidy.

One often overlooked storage solution, that is also a great way to inject colour into a room, is stacked wooden crates. Take at least three to four wooden crates and stack them together, experimenting with different arrangements and placements to see which design you like most. Securely attach the crates together, using screws and a drill.

These stacked crates can be painted and finished to suit your style, while also working as a portable storage solution that will suit different rooms, from kids’ bedrooms to bathrooms.

Alternatively, consider making a shelving unit out of old crates too.

Garden Gate TLC

Giving your garden fence a lick of paint is a simple way to freshen up its appearance and the look of your home all together. This is also a good way to incorporate some of this season’s trending colours, earth-toned neutrals, into your exterior. Why not choose two or three shades you like, that complement each other, and paint your panels alternating colours?

You want your fence or gate to be as clean as possible before you begin painting, so start by giving it a brush with a hard bristled brush and hose down to remove any dirt. You will also need to scrape any old, flaking paint from your fence.

Next, smooth its surface and any wood splints by sanding the wood down and then paint your gate with a good quality wood paint.

So there you have it, five easy and cost effective DIY projects to try your hand at this bank holiday.

Diy Fashion: 6 Ways To Cheer Up Old Clothes This Autumn & Winter

Ways to cheer up old clothes? We’ve got just the idea; tell them a joke!

Hmmm, extremely bad jokes aside, it seems as though the country has entered a new season – hell, a whole new era‘ with a new attitude; thrift. The nation’s grandpa David Attenborough said it with an impassioned plea, that ‘we’ve got to stop waste’. The continuing global pandemic shone a harsh light on the excess of the fashion industry. And, last month was declared ‘Second Hand September’, with celebrities encouraging the public not to buy anything new for a month.

But why end your commitment to ending fast fashion after just 30 days? (have September, April, June….yep, we were right). Moving forward, this rejection of excess and waste could well become a permanent fixture. All you need is a little imagination, a dexterous touch with the iron and sewing kit, and you could give your wardrobe a makeover for the next season. Here’s how; our 6 ways to cheer up old clothes this Autumn.

BRILLIANT BROOCHES

Perhaps the easiest way to jazz up clothes and pull your whole outfit together, this one. Because if you like it, then you better pin a brooch on it, as Beyonce nearly sang. No longer reserved for your Grandma or eccentric friend in thrall to fashion a little too ‘vintage’, brooches can really help you personalise an outfit and breathe life into old clothes.

What’s more, brooches can add a splash of colour and that decorative touch. Adorn your cardigans and sweaters with just one for a subtle effect, or dozens of dazzling, jewel-encrusted design brooches for something all the more spectacular.

Cheering up your old jumpers with brooches needn’t break the bank either; just head down to your local charity job and embrace your inner magpie. That said, the beauty of the brooch is that you can go all out and bling up your clothes with gorgeous gemstones, or keep things a subtle and restrained affair with just one or two, carefully deployed. The power is in your pinning hands!

COOL & CUTE PIN BADGES

Punk’s not dead and neither are pin badges. Yep, we’re all for bringing this original rebel accessory back this Autumn and using them to jazz up our denim jackets, teddy bear fleeces and winter coats. In our humble view, there’s no better way to cheer up your autumn/winter wardrobe, all for the price of a couple of quid.

While of course, you can embrace that rock and roll look, today there are a plethora of pins to choose from and you needn’t be confined to a Sid Vicous aesthetic, stylistically. He wouldn’t have approved of such conforming, after all. We like to think of a badge as a mini work of art, and just like art, there is something for everyone, open to interpretation and flexible in its delivery.

If you want to get serious, use one as a statement to pledge allegiance to a group or cause; BLM, Extinction Rebellion and red stars are all popular pieces right now. Or, keep things fun and frivolous with cute pin badges, depicting your favourite fruit, animal, pun or even houseplant!

That said, there’s no harm in channelling both energies, simultaneously. After all, it’s okay to be an avocado lover and a socialist, right?

EMBROIDERY

If you’re looking to take up an easy craft this Autumn, consider trying your hand at embroidery. A new hobby and a way to freshen up your wardrobe, all rolled into one…what’s not to love?

Not only will learning embroidery give your clothes a new lease of life, but it’s also a hugely relaxing and productive way to spend the coming months inside (must. not. utter. the. L word).

If your stitch work isn’t quite up to scratch, consider a simple on trend, in vogue pattern such as the abstract faces that we’ve seen dominating the interior design space this year. We’re also huge fans of Autumnal floral motifs – think perennial blooms over dark brooding backdrops; in other words, that old black knit at the bottom of your draw. We’ve all got one, right? Some stunning Autumn flowers include Chrysanthemums, Dahlias, Cornflowers and Nerines, to name but a few.

Looking ahead to Halloween, why not adorn your clothes with spooky spiders or some pumpkin patches? A little further on into the year (yep, we’re mentioning it in October), Christmas jumpers are a festive season must have, but they do all tend to look the same. Instead, why not create something truly unique, using tasteful alpine trees and a flicker of glitter?

PEARLS OF WISDOM

If you’ve strutted your stuff down the local high street of late, or simply browsed clothes online, then no doubt you’ve seen sweaters and jeans decorated with pearls. Indeed, pearl-adorned prices are everywhere right now. And if you can’t beat them (you can’t, we’ve tried), then join them…

It simply takes an old blouse, T-shirt, knit or long sleeve top and a few pearls or buttons to create a statement top this autumn. The secret to giving clothes a new lease of life lies in your own creativity, but if you’re stuck for inspiration, simply add to the collar of an old shirt or blouse for that funky effect. The good news is that pearl embellished sweaters are transeasonal, meaning you can wear them beyond this autumn/winter.

IRON ON LETTERS

A great way of giving benched items of clothing a new lease of life is through iron-on letters. Stuck for what to say? Firstly, what not to…be careful not to actually add letters which spell out ‘Bench’ to your top; not only will you get sued for plagiarism, but you might inadvertently revive an early 2000s trend we hope we’ve seen the back of.

Back to 2020 – slogan sweaters and T-shirts have been making a statement for a while now. Whether it’s a mood, a political message if you’ve got something to say and express, then wear it for the world to see.

TAKE TO THE CHARITY SHOP

#Secondhand September has been and gone, but the facts haven’t changed; fast fashion produces some of the highest percentages of waste of any industry on the planet, with the UK alone sending £140 million of clothes to landfill each year. So, if you have any pieces in your wardrobe which you simply can’t figure out how to cheer up, then instead, take them to the charity shop. Cyclical fashion – rather than linear – is the future. Please play your part.

THE BOTTOM LINE

All this time spent at home has had us looking for meaningful ways to pass the time, and we’re sure you’re the same. And what could be more meaningful than trying to improve your environmental credentials while giving your clothes a new lease of life? While we’re on the subject, we’ve written more about how to reduce your fashion footprint over here, so check it out!

Indeed, giving a new lease of life to a benched item of clothing will extend the longevity of your clothes limitlessly. And that’s what you’re here for, right?

5 Healthy Eating Tips For An Autumn Spent Indoors

Hunker down, it’s hibernation time. As the days get colder and the nights draw in, our eating habits change too, with dishes heartier and more comforting. That shouldn’t mean our autumn diets can’t be healthy.

The temptation for many (see: us) is to fire up the Netflix, invest in a Deliveroo subscription (they do exist, right?), and make sure we’ve got enough loungewear to last us through the season. An adjustable waistline is this season’s must-have, don’t you know?.

However tempting that sounds, we realise this isn’t the way to tackle such a turbulent, anything-but-normal time. If you’re to emerge the other side in something resembling good shape, both physically and mentally, your diet over the coming months is going to play a huge part. We’re here to help with that; here’s how to adjust to the new normal with 5 healthy eating tips for an Autumn spent indoors.

VITAMIN D

A lack of Vitamin D in the darker months is an issue for millions of Brits every year. According to The Conversation, ”humans need vitamin D to keep healthy and to fight infections…in the winter, people have a reduced ability to make vitamin D when they go outside, so amounts of at least 600 IU per day of vitamin D from food or supplements would help maintain vitamin D status at summer levels”.

Indeed the NHS suggests that due to coronavirus, ”It’s important to take vitamin D as you may have been indoors more than usual this year. You should take 10 micrograms (400 IU) of vitamin D a day between October and early March to keep your bones and muscles healthy”.

It makes sense, then, to ramp up the elements of your diet which can bring that elusive D in the requisite amounts. Here, oily fish is your friend, particularly salmon and trout, but also mackerel, anchovies and sardines, and is the best source of the good stuff. Getting your dose shouldn’t cost you a packet; check out our guide to the best tinned fish recipes for more.

Other excellent sources of vitamin D include liver, egg yolks and mushrooms, and according to this article on staying healthy for the ‘new normal’, ‘’whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, seaweed, mushrooms, and medicinal spices (like turmeric and ginger)’’ are also essential. Hmm, that sounds like a rather nice dinner right there.

AUTUMNAL FRUIT & VEGETABLES

With our connection to the outside world and nature suffering from protracted stints indoors, a poetic, healthy way to keep in tune with the natural world’s passing of time is to eat locally and with the seasons as much as possible.

Generally speaking, when food is picked in its prime and doesn’t have to travel far, it boasts its maximum potential, nutrient wise. Some have even suggested that produce which is in season boasts particular nutrients that the body needs for that time of year, such as summer fruits and their particularly high fluid and sugar content; ideal for replenishing you in the warmer months.

Bringing a little cheer to an otherwise gloomy season, then, is the fantastic autumnal produce which the UK is rightly proud of. October welcomes the start of wild mushroom season, with every chef’s favourite ceps and chanterelles both plentiful and oh so delicious. Some of the heartier vegetables are beginning to taste their best, too; do seek out for celeriac, beetroot, leeks, turnip and kale right now.

Some of Britain’s most beloved fruit also finds Autumn to be a purple patch; apples, pears, plums and figs are all begging to be picked and eaten. Phwoar.

And of course, with Halloween around the corner, pumpkin and squash of all shapes and sizes are abundant. Make the most of the glut; there are loads of ways to cook with squash and it’s wonderfully versatile.

GAME SEASON

Speaking of connecting with the food seasons, we’re right now in the midst of British game season. Aside from the wonderful flavour, game meat is seriously healthy; it’s lean, low in fat and cholesterol, and high in protein and iron. If you are going to eat meat, it’s a more ethical choice, too; you can be guaranteed that the animal has lived a life of freedom and frolicking. Proper free range, make no mistake. What’s more, it pairs beautifully with those autumnal fruits and vegetables we mentioned earlier; sometimes, this stuff just writes itself.

In terms of what’s good right now and despite its current negative associations, grouse is perhaps the pinnacle of Game Season, and the item chefs and diners tend to most savour. If we could be guaranteed our game bird hadn’t come into contact with a Boris acolyte, we’d savour it, too.

Wild fowl is also delicious and abundant in October, with wild ducks like mallard and teal particularly fine. Finally, you’ll start seeing venison in your local butchers with increasing regularity in the coming months, and it represents a healthy alternative to beef, boasting more protein and less fat per gram than any other red meat. It also tastes wonderful!

To get that sense of the outdoors and the wild from the comfort of home, why not put more game on your plate this Autumn?

FROZEN FOOD

Yep, we get it; we’ve spent a large chunk of this article extolling the virtues of a ‘fresh is best’ mentality. But to dismiss frozen food entirely is to be potentially wasteful, both with ingredients and your money.

Firstly, let’s think about batch cooking; doubling up recipes or making extra for another time, or bulking out your dinner with more vegetables or a sauce and freezing it…it all makes sense in the colder seasons when sometimes motivation runs low to cook healthy food each night. Having that delicious lasagna or chana masala waiting in the freezer can provide real comfort in these gloomier times, and is so much better than a takeaway, in so many ways.

What’s more, there’s no harm done by stocking up your freezer with vegetables and fruit. Sometimes, it’s actually more nutritious that way; frozen at the point of picking, with all their nutrients intact. Indeed, most professional kitchens swear by frozen peas for this reason, so don’t get snobby about the freezer section in your supermarket!

MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT

Colder days and insecure times…who can blame a person for turning to comfort food to nourish the soul? While there’s certainly no harm in the odd takeaway and Netflix binge from time to time, as Autumn and Winter roll around it would be wise to maintain a healthy, varied diet to keep any seasonal ailments at bay.

The temptation is strong to order in with increasing regularity when it’s too gloomy outside to go shopping, but when done excessively, this just isn’t a sustainable approach for your weight or bank balance. Instead, why not organise a weekly supermarket delivery slot to deliver the essentials and dry goods, and another with a local farm, greengrocers or via a vegetable box subscription service? Doing so can be a great motivation and source of inspiration to try out new recipes and generally cook with a healthy approach in mind.

Do remember, though, that this is a really challenging time for everyone, and don’t deny yourself the odd treat. You’re getting by in a global pandemic, and you deserve it! Instead, try to adopt a mindful, sustainable approach to your diet, and you can enjoy the food which gives you pleasure in the healthiest way possible.

Top Tips For Ensuring Your 2024 Holiday To Florida Doesn’t Break The Bank

Florida is an iconic, much-loved vacation spot on the East coast of the US, with each year seeing huge numbers of visitors flock here. In 2019 (let’s never speak of 2020 and 2021 again), Florida saw a whopping 133 million visitors, which was then a record for the state, before 2023 blew that out of the water with almost 138 million, again, a record. They must be doing something right…

Known as the Sunshine State due to its fantastic weather, Florida has incredible beaches, world-famous amusement parks, and amazing natural beauty spots.

For that reason, many travellers assume that a visit to the Sunshine State will be prohibitively expensive. And sure, certain elements can be costly. But if you follow the advice below, you can do things on a budget and still have a wonderful time, getting more bang for your buck in the process. With that in mind, here are some top tips for ensuring that your 2024 holiday to Florida doesn’t break the bank.

Avoid Peak Season

There are a number of ways to cut costs when it comes to the planning of your Florida vacation, and there are also ways to be frugal with your spending while on it, meaning you can make your getaway as cheap and as affordable as you want or need it to be.

One of the most efficient ways to cut costs is to avoid peak season. In Florida, hotel rates in peak season, which is from October through to April, are often more than double that of the low season.

In Florida’s low season, July and August, you can find bargain flights, cheaper hotels and generally see attractions without the huge queues of the busier months. Do be aware that these months are also extremely hot; if you love a balmy, humid atmosphere, then it could just the ticket! Be smart with your flight booking, too – you can subscribe to price alerts on numerous flight comparison websites which will keep you posted regarding sudden discount offers.

Some of the best times to visit Florida to avoid the crowds include Spring, though not during Spring Break (mid March), or Fall, when children have returned to school. Do be aware that Hurricane Season runs from June to November, with September the peak month. By November, frequency has lowered, making the eleventh month an ideal one to visit.

Theme Park Smarts

Planning a trip to a theme park like Disney World or Universal Studios Florida can be quite expensive, therefore planning and budgeting wisely can help to make it more affordable. Here are a number of tips:

  1. Book in Advance and Off-Peak: Tickets to the parks are generally cheaper if you purchase them in advance and during the off-peak season. Avoid school holidays and weekends if possible.
  2. Package Deals: Check for package deals that include park tickets, accommodation and perhaps even meals. Travel agents and online travel websites often offer these.
  3. Accommodation: Consider staying in a hotel off the property, as these could be more cost-effective than resorts and hotels owned by the parks. Using rental property platforms like Airbnb can also help reduce costs. We’re particularly keen on Kissimmee’s westgateresorts.com, the Marriott Grande Vista in Orlando proper, and the Reunion Resort, which is also in Kissimmee.
  4. Food and Drink: Theme park food can be pricey. Consider bringing your own snacks and refillable water bottles. Some hotels also offer free breakfast.
  5. Souvenirs: Establish a budget for souvenirs beforehand. It’s easy to overspend on mementos from your visit.
  6. Multi-Day Tickets: If you’re planning to spend several days at the parks, consider purchasing multi-day tickets. These are typically cheaper per day than single-day tickets.
  7. Free Activities: Both Disneyland and Universal Studios have free attractions and entertainment within the parks, make sure to take time to enjoy these.

Free (& Almost Free!) Things To Do In Florida

There are loads of free (or practically free) things to do in Florida. The official Visit Florida tourism board have published a detailed list on their website of activities to in the Sunshine which come in for free or under $5. Some of the best include:

A day at the beach – Florida has some of the most famous beaches in the world, and they are perfect for spending the day sunbathing or doing some watersports. For those on a budget, the beaches have another advantage in that they are completely free to visit.

With the sun shining all year round, it is always a good time to visit Florida’s beaches. Some of the very best in a crowded field include Daytona Beach, and its Marine Science Center at Lighthouse Point Park, which boasts sea turtles and a stingray pool. Also popular are St. Augustine Beach, Clearwater Beach and Amelia Island, but honestly, nearly every beach in the Sunshine State is as pretty-as-a-picture.

Catch your own meal at Cedar Key – Scalloping in the Summer is a popular activity and restaurants in the area will prepare your catch for you (if you’re lucky enough to actually land some scallops, that is!).

Go Iguana Hunting – For those seeking an added thrill beyond the underwater treasure hunt, consider exploring the shores for a different kind of adventure – hunting iguanas in Florida.

Tampa Botanical Gardens – For something a little different, a $5 entry fee will gain you acces to Tampa’s 17 acre grounds, full of exotic plans and wildlife.

Sunset at Keywest – Hard to look at that one and not see Kanye West, right? Anyway, if you and the family are keen to participate in the daily celebrations held at Mallory Square, where visitors gather to watch the sun set and enjoy the free entertainment on offer, including live music, comedy and magic shows, then this one is for you.

For more cheap things to do, check our Visit Florida’s roundup here.

Opt For The Orlando Explorer Pass

The Orlando Explorer Pass lets you choose 3, 4, or 5 attractions from over 15 options. This includes the Kennedy Space Center, Miami Seaquarium, water sports rental, and various tours. It’s an excellent way to save money if you’re interested in these experiences.

Use SunRail Or Other Transit Options:

When in Orlando, consider using the SunRail service. It connects a multitude of places including shopping locations and eateries, and it’s cheaper than taxis or car rentals. In cities like Miami, the Metromover is free to use and makes stops at popular city spots.

Consider Self-Catering

A huge part of the vacation budget in the United States gets spent on eating out, often on three meals a day. When you’re travelling as a family, that’s some serious dollar being spent in restaurants, cafes and diners.

According to Budget Your Trip, the average cost of eating out in Florida is at least $44 a day, per person. For a family of four, you could be looking at spending $200 a day in restaurants; and we think that might even be a modest estimation.

Instead, to save these huge expenses, it might be a prudent move to book self-catered accommodation. If you do end up eating out, be aware that American meals, particularly breakfasts, are huge relative to what we’re used to in the UK, and it’s common practice to ask for a doggy-bag to take home the rest. Don’t waste money by leaving half of your meal in the restaurant!

Rent A Car

Florida is a huge state, and the best mode of transport will, of course, depend on the itinerary of your trip. Even if you are just staying in Orlando only for the amusement parks, however, everything in the state (and the States, for that matter) is vast and spaced out. As such, renting a car is imperative. Public transport isn’t great in Florida, so renting a car is the most economical decision. Most car rental car companies allow one-way car hire, allowing you to drop off the car at a different location to where you began your journey, which is ideal for those on the move.

Budget car rental in Florida costs an average of $140, though the cheapest car rental providers in the state, either Wild Card or Thrifty, currently start their prices at just $17 a day, available for pickup from Orlando International Airport. Do remember not to buy gas (petrol) from the rental company – it will always be more expensive than at a station.

Consider A Campervan Or RV

While Florida has an abundance of manmade attractions and bustling big city scenes, nothing quite beats the breathtaking natural beauty on offer in the Sunshine State. Consider a road trip through Florida to truly appreciate its diverse scenery.

Why not consider combining your rental car and hotel budget and instead spend your money on a campervan? The savings when it comes to hotels vs campervans is significant, and the freedom of the open road experienced in an RV unbeatable.

If you’re not yet convinced, then check out these IDEAL ways to plan a road trip through Florida for more inspiration and logistical information!

Visit Less Touristy Cities

While Miami and Orlando are the top choices for many holidaymakers, Florida has more to offer. Explore lesser-known cities like Sarasota, Fort Myers, or Naples, which are beautiful and often less expensive. For those considering an extended stay, options like The Villages Florida rentals offer a unique way to experience local life.

Go Coupon Crazy

It’s no secret that the Americans love their coupons. With a little research and forward planning, you can make major savings on Orlando’s attractions by using voucher and coupon sites, which provide discounts on everything from tickets to refreshments.

Skip The Official Souvenir Shops

Finally, do be aware that in the amusement parks which Florida is so famous for, the price of souvenirs is massively inflated. While it’s all too easy to get caught up in the atmosphere of Disneyworld and end up splashing out on official Mickey Mouse t-shirts and other merchandise, the same souvenirs can be bought much cheaper at nearby local markets. Everyone wants to receive a souvenir when their loved one goes to Florida, but this can end up costing you more money than you budgeted for. The message here is simple; skip the ‘official’ souvenirs and shop locally for some real bargains.

The Bottom Line

Whether you are a thrill seeker who loves high octane roller coasters or you simply love laying low and soaking up some rays on the beach, Florida has everything you could ever want from a vacation destination. And if you follow the advice above, visiting the Sunshine State and getting the very most from it needn’t even break the bank!

From Thai Curries To Your Sunday Roast: The IDEAL Guide To Pairing Beer With Food

0

As any budding gastronomy enthusiast would acknowledge, the delicate art of pairing food with the right beverage can elevate a meal from merely satisfying to a truly memorable culinary adventure. The rule of thumb has traditionally been that wine is the go-to partner for dining, whether pairing pinot noir with your favourite Indian takeaway or chablis with a dozen oysters somewhere fancy.

All that said, an increasingly modern trend has emerged, that is diverting away from grape and veering towards grain. Yes, we’re talking about beer – the underdog of food pairing.

The Golden Rules Of Pairing

While pairing beer with food opens up an avenue for personal creativity and exploration, there are a few ‘golden rules’ to guide you through the process.

Match Strength With Strength

This is a crucial principle to bear in mind. The flavours of your beer and your dish should be in harmony. A robust beer can easily overpower a delicate dish, and conversely, a hearty meal can render a light beer tasteless.

Balance Bitterness & Spice

Beers with high bitterness can increase the heat in spicy foods. If you’re serving a spicy curry, consider a refreshingly light and slightly sweet beer which can balance the spice and refresh the palate.

Complement Or Contrast

The flavours of your beer can either mirror the flavours in the food, creating a harmonious experience, or they can provide a contrasting note, creating an intriguing balance. For instance, the malty sweetness of a Brown Ale can complement the caramelised crust of a perfectly grilled steak, while the tartness of a Sour Ale contrasts beautifully against rich, fatty foods.

Don’t Forget Carbonation

Beers with high carbonation can act as a palate cleanser, cutting through rich and creamy foods to refresh the palate. A crisp Pilsner could perfectly balance out a fish and chips dish.

Consider The Cooking Method

The way your food is cooked can guide your beer choice. Grilled foods often pair well with beers that have roasty notes, like Porters or Stouts, while lighter cooking methods like steaming or poaching might pair well with lighter beers like Pilsners or Pale Ales.

Factor In The Brewing Process

The brewing process can greatly influence the flavours and characteristics of beer, and thus its compatibility with certain foods. For example, beers that have been barrel-aged often have a robust, complex profile, with notes of wood, vanilla or even spirits, and these pair well with rich, hearty dishes or strong cheeses.

On the other hand, a lightly hopped lager, with its crisp and clean profile, may suit delicate dishes such as light seafood or salads, or salty snacks like crisps and pretzels.

Understanding the brewing process and how it affects the flavour profile of the beer can provide valuable insight when making food pairing decisions.

The Perfect Beer & Food Pairings

Anyway, if you’re wondering how to harmoniously marry your dinner with the perfect pint, then you’ve come to the right place; here’s our IDEAL guide to pairing beer with food.

Spicy Thai Curries with Wheat Beer

The intricate flavours and heat of Thai curries make them a gastronomic delight. Your chosen beer pairing can make or break this dining experience. Wheat beer, often served super chilled, is a marvellous choice for Thai cuisine

Its slight sweetness, refreshing carbonation, and the fruity and spicy tones beautifully counterbalance the heat of the curry, whilst not overshadowing the nuanced flavours of lemongrass, galangal, and makrut lime leaves. IPA and Saison beers also work really well.

Roast Chicken with Pale Ale

Roast chicken, a perennial favourite in British households, is known for its soothing, savoury flavours and the most delicious skin. A strong beer might overpower it. However, a balanced brew like a Pale Ale can be a winning combination. The hoppy character and subtle citrus tones of Pale Ale can amplify the succulence of the chicken and its sumptuous though light gravy, making it a cheerfully satisfactory match.

Fish & Chips with Classic Pilsner

There’s nothing more traditionally British than a serving of crisply battered fish and chunky chips. A classic Pilsner, renowned for its crisp and slightly bitter profile, works wonders with this dish. The effervescence and lightness of the Pilsner, combined with its citrus notes, cuts through the richness of the batter and helps to refresh the palate, enhancing each delightful fishy forkful.

Roast Beef with Stout

Roast beef, thick gravy, and Yorkshire pudding – the quintessential British Sunday roast. A hearty meal such as this requires a robust beer to match. Enter the Stout. The roasted barley and rich, strong flavours of a stout can stand up to the bold tastes and textures of the roast beef and trimmings without clashing. The darker malt flavours of stout even share certain flavour similarities with the sear on roast beef, creating a divine pairing that enhances the enjoyment of both.

A Cheeseboard with Belgian Ale

Nothing caps a fine dining experience quite like an array of aromatic cheeses. This is where the complex Belgian Ale steps into the spotlight. Their high carbonation cuts through the creaminess of cheese, while the fruit and spice notes interact interestingly with varieties from sharp cheddar to pungent blue.

Pizza with American IPA

Pizza, with its rich, tangy tomato sauce, can handle a beer with a bit of punch. An American IPA, with its strong hoppy bitterness and citrusy undertones, is an excellent choice that can balance the richness of the cheese while echoing the acidity of the tomato sauce. The slight floral notes also compliment a variety of toppings from meats to vegetables.

Full English Breakfast with Brown Ale

A traditional Full English Breakfast, in all its hearty glory, requires a beer with enough character to hold its own. A traditional British Brown Ale, with its toasty malt, subtle sweetness and low bitterness, can enhance the savoury flavours of the breakfast. The beer’s robust enough to complement the bacon and sausages, yet sufficiently mellow not to overpower the eggs, mushrooms, and tomatoes.

Lancashire Hotpot with Traditional Bitter

The Lancashire Hotpot, a lamb and vegetable stew topped with sliced potatoes, is a deeply comforting and traditional dish. An old but gold British Ale, known as a Traditional Bitter, pairs perfectly with this dish. Its moderate alcoholic strength and bitterness, balanced by a subtle fruity sweetness, work in tandem with the rich meat and vegetables without overshadowing the meal.

Spaghetti Bolognese with Munich Dunkel

For a rich, tomato-based Spaghetti Bolognese, a Munich Dunkel is a surprisingly excellent beer pairing. Dark lagers like Dunkel, with their mild bitterness, moderate sweetness and hints of chocolate, can counterbalance the acidity of the tomato sauce and provide a beautiful contrast to the savoury meat, thereby enhancing the overall dining experience.

Apple Crumble with Belgian Tripel

To end on a sweet note, the classic dessert- Apple Crumble pairs wonderfully with a Belgian Tripel. The beer’s high carbonation and spicy, fruity tones are a delightful complement to the crumble’s sweet-tart apple filling (even better with a little rhubarb thrown in!).

Moreover, the beer’s malty richness is perfect against the crumble’s buttery, oat-y topping. The melody of the apple crumble with the Belgian Tripel is a testament to the fact that beer isn’t just for savoury dishes.

The Bottom Line

Evidently, the arena of beer and food pairing is incredibly vast and diverse – a gastronomic playground if you will. The array of flavours, styles, and textures in both beer and food mean that the possibilities are virtually endless. Why not start with these classic pairings and then experiment with your own combinations? Happy tasting!

Eat With Your Eyes First: The 8 Key Tenets Of Fantastic Food Photography

In the world of culinary art, it’s often said that people “eat with their eyes first”. This adage underscores the significant role visual aesthetics play in our relationship with food. It’s no wonder then, that food photography has become an instrumental aspect of the culinary world, from cookbooks and restaurant menus to food blogs and social media posts.

Food photography is an art that goes beyond simply clicking pictures. It’s a blend of creativity, technique, and a true understanding of ingredients, dishes and food culture. Today, we’re in search of that perfect picture, you know; the one that makes your taste buds tingle with just a single image. With that in mind, here are the 8 key tenets of fantastic food photography.

Lighting Is Everything

Whether you are shooting a lavish Christmas dinner or a simple slice of watermelon, lighting can break or make your food photography.

Proper lighting can emphasise the shine of a drizzle, illuminate the steam from a freshly cooked dish, or accentuate the colours in a vibrant salad. Whether you’re working with natural sunlight streaming in through a window or a set of studio lights, understanding the direction and quality of the light source is essential.

Natural lighting often provides a soft, diffused look that is perfect for most food shots. However, the time of day can drastically affect the hue and intensity. For best results, aim for early morning or late afternoon when the sunlight isn’t too harsh.

On the other hand, artificial lights give you more control, allowing you to adjust brightness and direction, which can be especially beneficial when shooting in low-light conditions or during nighttime – which, of course, is often when the most intimate of dinners go down.

The Art Of Composition

Composition concerns itself with how the elements of a photo are arranged. Use the Rule of thirds, leading lines, or symmetry to make your food the star of the show. Avoid cluttering the frame; sometimes, less is more.

In food photography, the allure is often in the details. The composition revolves around the dance of the dish, its plating, the backdrop, and the subtle garnishes that enhance its story. Before clicking, set a clear theme: perhaps a rustic ambiance with worn boards and vintage silverware or a minimalist, modern touch with crisp lines. This theme will guide how you position and layer each element in the frame.

Styling further enriches this tableau. Thoughtfully chosen props, like contrasting napkins, a carefully positioned spoon, or a sprinkle of fresh herbs, add depth and guide the viewer’s gaze. Each detail, meticulously curated, should entice the viewer as much as the dish itself would.

Proximity & Angle

The distance and perspective from which you shoot can greatly affect the outcome. Closer, detailed shots create intimacy, making viewers feel like they could reach out and take a bite. Different angles can also emphasise different aspects of the food. For instance, a straight-down, or ‘bird’s eye’ view, can showcase the symmetry and design of a dish, making it perfect for flat-lays where components are spread out. On the contrary, a side angle can highlight the layers of a burger or the depth of a beverage, revealing texture and depth.

But continue beyond the familiar angles. Challenge yourself. Get close to capture the garnish details, or pull back to show the dish in its environment. An oblique angle would lend an edgy look to a traditional dish, making it pop unexpectedly. The key is to experiment and find that perfect perspective that does justice to the food you’re portraying.

Colour & Contrast

Colour and contrast in food photography aren’t simply elements of style or aesthetics – they are the very heart and soul of an enticing visual feast!

Imagine you’re scrolling through your social media feed. A post from your favourite food blog catches your eye – a decadent chocolate pudding, bathed in warm hues of caramel, against a stark white rustic table. Why did it hook your attention? Because it’s not just a picture, but an immersive, sensory experience – it’s the power of colour and contrast in food photography.

Colour and contrast help to bring dishes to life, adding depth and dimension, making them tantalisingly real and incredibly appetising. They aren’t just about making food look good; they’re about stirring emotions and evoking that “must-have” craving in your audience.

Consider colour. It’s an essential part of our visual perception and impacts our mood substantially. Bold, vibrant colours often stimulate the senses and create feelings of happiness, excitement, and appetite. Cool, soothing palettes can communicate freshness, comfort or sophistication.

In food photography, it’s crucial to use colour purposefully. It might be enhancing the natural hues and textures of a dish or strategically using props and backgrounds to play up or balance the hero – your food!

Contrast, on the other hand, is the difference in luminance or colour that makes an object distinguishable. In food photography, it’s about blending and offsetting the elements of your scene to create a riveting visual journey.

It can be the subtle play of light and shadow bringing texture and depth to a bowl of salad, highlighting every crinkled leaf and shiny tomato. Or, the dramatic starkness between a vibrant plate of strawberries and a dark background, making the reds pop irresistibly.

So, how can you harness the power of colour and contrast effectively in your food photography?

  • Understand Colour Theory: Identifying complementary, analogous, or monochromatic colours will help you create visually striking and harmonious images.
  • Use Natural Light: Natural light brings out the true colours of food, adds depth, and reduces unwanted shadows. Remember, the direction of your light source impacts the contrast and texture in your images.
  • Play with Backgrounds and Props: Use backgrounds that complement or contrast your food but don’t steal the spotlight. Props can help enhance the colours or introduce needed contrast.
  • Edit Mindfully: Post-processing software can enhance colours and adjust contrast, but avoid oversaturation or unnatural hues. The goal is to depict the food as delectable yet real.
  • Experiment: Artistic rules are meant to be broken creatively. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different colour combinations and levels of contrast to create your unique style.

Movement

Emphasising movement in food photography might sound like an oxymoron, but it’s actually a pivotal element, as it injects life and dynamism into the image. The always popular choice for food photographers, DSLR cameras, with their high-speed shutter capabilities, are perfect for capturing these fleeting moments with clarity.

We’ve all seen a shot of a fork piercing the yolk of a fried egg or someone dusting their bench with flour ready for kneading. In the frequently static field of food photography, portraying this kind of motion brings an enticing sense of reality, bridging the gap between the viewer and the culinary experience. It triggers a sensory response, evoking the taste, smell, and texture of the food, thereby stimulating a viewer’s appetite.

The technique of capturing this transitory moment demands a combination of keen observation, precise timing, and proficient light manipulation, thereby showcasing the photographer’s skill. Furthermore, it encourages narrative storytelling, inviting the viewer to engage with the process behind the dish, rather than merely its final presentation.

Texture & Details

Crispy, creamy, crunchy, or soft – the texture of food can be as mouthwatering as the taste itself. Focus on minute details; the sheen of a buttered roll or the steam rising off a hot chocolate can truly bring your photographs to life.

Styling & Props

Using props helps in storytelling and setting the mood. Be it a rustic wooden table for that homemade apple pie, a frying pan still holding that oozy egg from earlier, or a chic white marble base for a modern vegan salad, choose props that enhance rather than distract from the food. Remember, the food is the hero.

Post-Production Magic

Last but not least, a well-edited image can be the cherry on top of your food photography sundae. However, with editing, the motto should always be ‘enhance, not change’. Over-edited images can look artificial and unappetising.

Post-processing plays a crucial role in food photography in emphasising the dish’s best aspects. Here are specific editing tools and techniques tailored for food photography:

  • Crop and Composition: Reframe to focus on the dish’s most tantalising parts. Cropping can also help achieve the golden ratio or rule of thirds for a more balanced image.
  • Brightness/Contrast: Adjust to accentuate the juiciness of meats, the gloss of sauces, or the freshness of vegetables. A good balance ensures the food remains appetising and not washed out or overly dark.
  • Image Masking: Ideal for emphasising specific food details. For instance, if you want to brighten the syrup drizzling down pancakes without affecting the surrounding areas.
  • Colour Enhancements: Food is all about colours. Boosting saturation or vibrance can make dishes pop, but moderation is key. You want a fresh salad to look vibrant, not neon.
  • White Balance: Ensure the food’s colours are authentic. A creamy pasta should not appear with a blue tint, nor should a grilled steak look too yellow.
  • Sharpening: Highlight the textures, from a fried dish’s crispness to the softness of desserts. But avoid oversharpening, which can make food look gritty.
  • Spot Healing/Clone Tool: Remove minor imperfections, like crumbs or splatters, that might distract from the main dish.

The Bottom Line

The realm of food photography is a playground for your creativity. Remember, your aim is to make your audience’s eyes savour the food before they’ve even tasted it. Happy shooting (and even happier eating afterwards!).

7 Essential Tips On Diminishing Those Night-Time Loo Visits

The moon is up, the stars dot the midnight sky, it’s the perfect time for a restful slumber. But the tranquillity is short-lived, when the niggling call of nature summons you from your warm cocoon to the porcelain throne – the loo.

This nocturnal nuisance is a common plight experienced by many, whether you’re young or a bit further down life’s path. Luckily, there are ways to counter this inconvenience, to ensure a night of uninterrupted sleep. With that in mind, here are 7 essential tips to reduce those frequent night-time toilet trips.

Moderate Your Evening Drinks

It’s no secret that what goes in must come out. To lessen your loo visits, try limiting your fluid intake a few hours before bedtime. This doesn’t mean you should go thirsty. Just conscientiously control the amount and timing of your drinks. Remember, coffee, tea and other caffeinated beverages are known culprits for increasing urine production, so it’s worth swapping that bedtime brew for a soothing caffeine-free herbal tea.

Whilst many of us are aware that coffee, alcohol, and tea can set off an increased urgency to visit the loo, there are a few other drinks that may surprise you with their diuretic properties. Firstly, cranberry juice is one such beverage. Often touted for its effective role in fending off urinary tract infections, cranberry juice can increase urine production due to its diuretic nature. Soft, fizzy drinks, as well, can sometimes drive one to pee more frequently, potentially interrupting your peaceful slumber.

Herbal infusions, although popularly used for winding down before bed, can have varying effects depending on the herbs used. Infusions with ingredients like dandelion or nettle have a diuretic effect. Lastly, certain health or detox drinks, especially those containing cucumber, celery, and watermelon, can act as natural diuretics due to their high water content.

Reconsider The Timing Of Your Medication

Some medications, especially diuretics, can increase urine production. If you’re on such medications, discuss with your doctor if you can take them earlier in the day. This slight change can dramatically decrease the number of times you have to drag yourself out of bed. Always consult with your GP or other healthcare professional with questions about medication.

Embrace the ‘Double-Void’ Technique

This might sound odd, but it genuinely works. The double-void technique involves going to the loo, waiting a few minutes and then trying again. It’s a simple yet effective way to ensure your bladder is completely empty before hitting the sack, reducing the likelihood of further nocturnal disturbances.

Ditch The Late-night Tipples

Indeed, a nightcap might seem like a fine idea to induce sleep quickly. However, alcohol disrupts the normal sleep cycle and promotes the production of urine. This double whammy invariably leads to you navigating dark corridors in the wee hours. On top of that, alcohol leaves you dehydrated, meaning you’ll be chugging water in the night to try to compensate. And we all know where that leads us back to…

Keep Active

Research suggests that sedentary habits contribute to excessive night-time urination. Make it a point to stay active during the day. Regular exercise can strengthen your pelvic muscles, improving bladder control and reducing your night-time loo visits.

Monitor Your Diet

Certain foods can irritate the bladder, including citrus fruits, tomatoes, chocolate, spicy foods, and artificial sweeteners. Try keeping a food diary to identify any potential dietary triggers and discuss your findings with a healthcare professional.

Seek Medical Advice

Persistent and unusually frequent night-time loo visits can be a sign of an underlying condition like diabetes, sleep apnoea, a urinary tract infection, or, as the institution at the forefront of testicular and prostate cancer research Urocare tell us, something more serious. If you’ve made the necessary lifestyle adjustments and seen no improvement, it’s essential to seek medical advice.

The Bottom Line

There you have it, seven essential tips for reducing those pesky night-time loo trips. Remember, everyone’s body is different, so what works for one person may not necessarily work for you. It’s all about finding the right balance and creating a routine that suits your lifestyle. Here’s to a future of uninterrupted, slumber-filled nights! Well, one can only dream…

7 Reasons Why Tanzania Is Set To Be 2024’s Dream Honeymoon Destination

Your honeymoon is a once-in-a-lifetime (let’s hope it’s only once!) romantic getaway, a chance to make lifetime memories with your beloved, and an excuse for phoning in all those freebies from restaurants and hotels along the way.

If you’re looking for a place that offers adventure, relaxation, and a cultural and culinary extravaganza in the same breath, look no further than Tanzania. This East African gem is set to become 2024’s dream honeymoon destination, and here’s why.

Firstly, How Best To Get To Tanzania From London?

Given the significant distance of approximately 7303 km between London and Tanzania, you’re going to be flying here, make no mistake. However, it’s important to note that there are no direct flights from London to Tanzania.

The quickest flights from London Heathrow to the Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania’s busiest) takes around 12 and a half hours with a stopover in Istanbul, and cost in the region of £500 for a return ticket.

The Romantic Aura Of Tanzania’s Private Islands

Tanzania is home to many exquisite private islands that make for an idyllic honeymoon getaway. Rubondo Island, located on Lake Victoria, and Fanjove Island, part of the Songo Songo archipelago, are perfect hideouts for lovebirds. Offering private island accommodation that usually comes in the form of luxury lodges, as well as untouched beaches and an incredible array of wildlife, you will enjoy privacy, serenity and nature in its purest form.

The Culinary Adventure Of A Lifetime

Tanzania’s cuisine is as diverse as its landscapes. From the savannahs to the coastal areas, each region has its unique dishes that will satiate your taste buds. Traditional meals based around the staple cornmeal Ugali, and grilled meats known as Nyama Choma, and the coastal region’s Zanzibar Pizza (more akin to a Malaysian style murtabak than a pizza, in all honesty), will provide gastronomic delights you won’t soon forget.

Couple this with a glass of locally brewed hibiscus wine, and you have a unique and unforgettable culinary journey that will define and delight your first holiday as lovebirds.

The Magic Of Zanzibar

Known as ‘The Spice Island’, Zanzibar is a tropical paradise that promises mesmerising sunsets, crystal clear water, and a rich history, and is the perfect place to unwind after your wedding stress

Explore the old town, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Stone Town, enjoy snorkeling in the turquoise water, and lose yourself in spice plantations. The blend of African, Arab, and European influences creates a unique charm that is utterly captivating.

What better way to affect honeymoon affection than the smell of scents of tropical flowers and the warm tropical breeze passing over you as you canoodle in a hammock together strung between two palm trees? Nugawi Village is probably the best beach on the main island Unguja for that romantic walk, and Nakupenda offers the chance to frolic with snorkels and sealife when you’ve had enough of rolling around with your partner.

Breathtaking Safaris

Tanzania boasts some of the world’s best wildlife-viewing destinations including the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater. The Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest and zebras cross the plains, is a spectacle to behold. Imagine enjoying a romantic picnic amidst this backdrop, a perfect fusion of love and adventure

How To Choose The Right Mattress To Address Back Pain & Promote Spinal Health

Have you ever wondered why, after your eight-hour slumber, you still find yourself waking up with a sore back, feeling more like you’ve pulled an all-nighter than had a restful night’s sleep? If so, the culprit could be your mattress. Ensuring that your mattress provides sufficient back support and promotes spinal health is of paramount importance.

Spinal health is more than just avoiding back pain; it’s about enhancing the overall quality of life. Integral to this is the quality of sleep we receive, with our mattress serving as the foundation. As we lay down each night, our spine seeks relief and relaxation, free from the stresses of our upright day. And what cradles our spine during this restorative period? Our mattress.

It’s not just a bedroom accessory; it’s a foundation for spinal health. The interplay between the spine and our mattress choice is profound and influential. Together, then, let’s climb into bed and embark on night of passionate exploration of this relationship with essential sleeping tips, illuminating the importance of an informed choice in mattresses, not just for a good night’s sleep but for the holistic well-being of your backbone.

Understanding The Spine

The human spine isn’t just a stack of bones – it’s a sophisticated structure comprising vertebrae, intervertebral discs, and intricate ligaments and tendons. These elements collectively allow for movement, stability, and protection of the spinal cord.

The spine’s unique S-shaped curvature is ergonomically designed to evenly distribute mechanical stress during activities like walking, sitting, or lifting.

Sleep & Its Undeniable Connection To Spinal Health

Sleep isn’t merely ‘shutdown time’, it’s a critical period of repair, rejuvenation, and cognitive processing. Adequate, uninterrupted rest ensures muscle recovery, tissue growth, and hormone regulation.

Every sleeping position, whether on the side, back, or stomach, impacts the spine differently. These postures determine pressure points and areas of strain, which can either be mitigated or exacerbated by one’s mattress. Beyond comfort, a mattress influences sleeping posture. The right mattress can alleviate pressure, maintain alignment, and prevent morning stiffness or pain.

Choosing The Right Mattress: Firm Or Soft?

One of the most common misconceptions is the notion that a hard mattress is the best option for back issues. The fact is, it’s not about getting the hardest or the softest mattress – it’s about finding the right balance.

You need a mattress that supports your body in a neutral position, one where your buttocks, head, and shoulders are all aligned and your spine has a nice natural curvature. Too firm mattresses can put pressure on your joints, whilst those too soft can fail to provide the support needed, causing your body to sink. To have a mattress that supports your back, you need all of this in alignment.

The Anatomy Of Mattresses & Their Impact On Spinal Health

Materials matter – memory foam, popular for its body-contouring properties, can reduce pressure points. Innerspring, with its bouncy nature, offers edge support and cooling benefits. Latex, a naturally derived material, combines resilience with contouring.

Every individual has unique needs, and firmness preferences can vary based on weight, body shape, and sleep position. When choosing a mattress material perfect for you, consider what your needs are and how each specific material could contribute to a better night’s sleep.

A quality mattress upholds the spine’s natural curvature. The lumbar region, often a pain centre, demands specific attention. A mattress should cater to this area, offering optimal support to prevent misalignment. Overly soft mattresses can cause the spine to sag, while extremely firm ones might not follow the spine’s natural curve.

Like any product, mattresses have a lifespan. With prolonged use, even premium mattresses can sag, lose support, or become uneven. Recognising these signs and knowing when to upgrade is vital for spinal health.

The Art & Science Of Assessing Sleep Positions

Understanding your preferred sleep position is paramount. For side sleepers, this position demands contouring, especially around the shoulders and hips. The goal is spinal alignment from the neck to the base of the spine. For back sleepers, support for the lower back is essential here. The mattress should adapt to the spine’s curve, filling gaps for complete support. Stomach sleepers, on the other hand, can strain the neck and lower back. A firmer mattress can prevent excessive arching and promote neutral alignment.

A Matter Of Individual Preference

What works for one person might not work for another. It’s crucial to test several mattresses for personal comfort before making a purchase. Some stores offer a ‘sleep trial’ allowing you to test the mattress for a certain period. Take advantage of these trials to find the mattress that suits your sleep style and comfort needs.

Chronic Back Pain: Navigating The Mattress Maze

Those with chronic back issues often require specialised solutions. Mattresses that offer zoned support, targeting specific pressure points, can be beneficial. However, personal comfort should always be prioritised, often following consultation with healthcare professionals.

Enhancing Spinal Support: Beyond Just Mattresses

Pillows can complement mattresses in supporting spinal health. They maintain the cervical spine’s alignment, ensuring the neck is neither too elevated nor too depressed. For those not ready for a new mattress but seeking enhanced comfort, toppers can be a viable interim solution. They can add plushness, firmness, or targeted support based on needs.

For conditions like sleep apnea, acid reflux, or chronic back pain, adjustable beds can be transformative. By altering elevation, these beds can relieve pressure, improve breathing, or enhance comfort.

Beyond Boundaries: A Guide To Planning Permissions & Legalities For UK Property Extensions

0

If you’ve been daydreaming about a property extension, it’s crucial to understand the necessary planning permissions and legal requirements you’ll need to navigate. Extending your UK property isn’t as simple as picking up a hammer and nails; it involves a carefully orchestrated dance with building regulations and planning departments.

Before we embark on this thrilling, exploratory journey of property extensions, let’s first clarify what planning permission is. In its simplest form, planning permission is a formal approval from your local council that your proposed building project is acceptable, considering its effects on your neighbours and the wider environment.

Do I Need Planning Permission?

The primary question on everyone’s mind is usually – do I need planning permission for my property extension? The answer to that is a thorny ‘it depends’, but don’t worry, we’ll unpack this.

Under Permitted Development Rights, you may not need planning permission for your extension. These rights allow homeowners to carry out small-scale changes, such as small extensions, without seeking full planning permission. However, there are limits and conditions attached to these rights. For example, a single-storey extension at the rear of your property can only extend up to six metres for an attached house and eight metres for a detached house. If your proposed extension exceeds these limits, planning permission becomes necessary.

Planning permission may also be required if your property is located in a Conservation Area (more of that a little later) or listed building or if your property has already been extended in the past.

What About Building Regulations Approval?

Regardless of whether your extension requires planning permission, it will still need Building Regulations approval. Building Regulations are minimum standards for design, construction and alterations to virtually every building, as provided by the UK government. They’re designed to ensure the safety and health for people in or about buildings.

Building Regulations cover everything from the foundations to the roof, and include aspects such as fire safety, sound insulation, energy efficiency and access. An application to the Building Control department of your local council is required to prove your extension complies with these standards. This can be either a Full Plan Submission or a Building Notice, each with its own nuances.

Party Wall Act 1996

This is another piece of legislation you should be aware of before starting construction. If your extension involves work on an existing wall shared with another property, you must notify the neighbouring owners. They can then agree or disagree with what is proposed. This falls under the Party Wall Act 1996, which is designed to prevent and resolve disputes in relation to party walls, boundary walls and excavations near neighbouring buildings.

The Right To Light

Another legal aspect you need to consider when planning your property extension is the Right to Light. Under the Prescription Act 1832, if a window has had uninterrupted access to daylight for 20 years or more, it’s gained the Right to Light. Your extension should not unduly obstruct this light.

As a rule of thumb, the 45-degree angle rule is often used to assess if you’re impacting your neighbours’ Right to Light. If your extension does cross this line, your neighbour could potentially take legal action or demand that the work be altered or removed.

Restrictive Covenants

Restrictive covenants may exist on your property’s title deeds, limiting what you can do with your property. These legally binding conditions can prevent certain alterations, including extensions, to maintain a certain aesthetic cohesion in an area or prevent overcrowding.

If you breach a restrictive covenant, you might be required to undo the work at your expense and could face legal proceedings from the party who benefits from such a covenant. Therefore, it’s critical to check your property’s title deeds before planning any extension.

Wildlife & Conservation Acts

Other less common, but equally important laws to be aware of may include the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Protection of Badgers Act 1992. If your property has bats or badgers living on the grounds, these creatures are protected by law, and you may need to take specific steps to ensure any building work doesn’t harm them or their habitats.

It’s also important to mention tree surveys. If your extension plans could impact nearby trees, you may require a tree survey as part of your application. This is especially true if the trees are protected by Tree Preservation Orders (TPO), or they are within a Conservation Area.

Breaching such orders can result in hefty fines, hence the importance of conducting a tree survey before starting work. Tree surveys provide invaluable insights, evaluating the health and longevity of the trees, their impact on the proposed extension and any measures required to protect them.

The Bottom Line

Overall, extending a property does involve navigating through a web of planning permissions and legislation. While it might appear intimidating at times, these measures exist to safeguard individual rights, protect our shared environment and maintain the architectural integrity of our neighbourhoods

Instead, embrace these simply as vital steps towards attaining our dream extension. After all, what’s a few pieces of paperwork compared to the joy of seeing your dream space come to life?
