6 IDEAS FOR HAVING FUN WITH FRIENDS AT HOME DURING THE ‘NEW NORMAL’

The dawn of the ‘new normal’ has confused our collective sense of unbridled fun and freedom. Sure, some are enjoying going out, hitting the high street, restaurants and pubs once again, and personally, we’re all for supporting local businesses reopening right now.

That said, it’s understandable that some are more tentative in stepping out and spending. As such, the second half of 2020 looks certain to see an uptick in folk socialising – at a safe distance, of course – from the comfort of home. If that sounds like your kind of thing, but you’re a little stuck for inspiration on how to host a party from home, fear not; we have a host of activities here that could be a whole load of fun when done domestically.

Whether you’re into fancy cocktails, trying new cuisines or playing games at home, there’s guaranteed to be something for you here. Here are 6 ideas for having fun with friends at home during the ‘new normal’.

PIZZA & CRAFT BEERS IN THE GARDEN

We all love pizza, right? Who doesn’t find comfort in a blistered crust, fresh tomato sauce and melting mozzarella? But our homemade versions never quite do this pizza passion justice; always a little too soggy, a few centimetres too thick and lacking in that non so che cosa.

If you’re going to throw a good ol’ fashioned ‘pizza party’ but aren’t looking to order in from your local Neapolitan specialists, then the purchase of a mini pizza oven (which you can conveniently place over your BBQ ) might just the answer. These guys are available on Amazon and other outlets, starting at around £60, and reach temperatures of 400°C, ideal for that smoky, charred crust you’re after, and a whole lot of fun as a focal point, too. That, or you could even build your own pizza oven, though it takes a fair amount of work.

Throw some craft beers into the mix, and you’ve replicated the kind of scene not out of place in the hipper corners of East London. Perfect! Or should we say, ideal.

CELEBRATE ‘INSERT COUNTRY’ CUISINE

Sure, an Italian night full of pizzas sounds great, but why stop there? Instead, why not think outside the box and the continent with a deep dive into a cuisine from further afield? Indeed, a fun and delicious way to learn about a country’s culture is through its cuisine, and serving up some authentic, traditional dishes with an interesting history behind them provides the perfect talking point for even the most languid of evenings.

The more hands on and involved the guests can get in the cooking process, the better. So, a Mexican fiesta where everyone assembles their own tacos, or a Sushi night with guests rolling in and rolling their own, is just the ticket for nurturing a convivial, involved atmosphere.

‘INSERT DAY OF THE YEAR’  CELEBRATION

Every day is a ‘national day of something celebration’, whether that’s National Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day celebrated every January 27th, to June 13th’s National Axe Throwing Day and beyond. There’s bound to be something out there to suit anyone’s tastes, and there’s a lot of fun to be had in going totally overboard in theming every element of your party to suit something completely esoteric and obscure!

Indeed, the world is full of wonderful, whacky and weird holidays, but the trick here is to settle on something which everyone loves. ‘National Prosecco Day’, then, coming up on August 13th, sounds like just the ticket.

HOST A POKER NIGHT

One fun way to enjoy a night in with all the razzle and dazzle associated with going out on the tiles is by hosting a poker night with your friends or family. First things first, no one wants to play poker (or sip that whiskey on the rocks) on an empty stomach; snacks need to be provided and replenished with fair regularity. No one’s expecting a banquet, but some crunchy, salty chips with dips is ideal. And of course, cold beers are a must. To further define the right ambience, some soft, meandering jazz seems to encapsulate the right spirit for an evening of poker.

If you do choose to be in control of the game itself, it might be a good idea to have a quick go at online poker to familiarise yourself with the rules before hosting. No one wants a host in charge of proceedings who isn’t familiar with the intricacies of this most popular of card games.

SET UP A COCKTAIL BAR

You don’t need to leave the house to have an exciting night involving carefully considered drinks and a classy, sophisticated vibe. Ever more esoteric cocktails are all the rage at the moment, and we’re all here for it; wow your guests with the latest biodynamic wines, or how about an Espresso Martini, a guaranteed crowdpleaser, or even something more weird and wacky like the Coquetier, which is made from chocolate, cinnamon, rum and egg, all served in its shell. Mind your grip!

Do check out our tips on how to create the IDEAL wine bar experience at home for some insider advice on doing just that.

CHEESE & WINE NIGHT

You can’t go wrong with a cheese and wine night. Us Brits love one, and nope, we’re not having those stereotypes about the people of this country eating criminally mild cheddar, babybel and er, that’s it.

Quite the opposite is true, in fact. Britain is currently revered on the world stage for the fantastic cheese it produces, and us Brits are some of the most enthusiastic cheese connoisseurs and consumers about. All the host has to do is curate an interesting, varied cheeseboard, guests can bring the wine, and voila; a sophisticated with little effort (and hardly any tidying up!) required.

THE IDEAL CHECKLIST: THINGS TO RESEARCH BEFORE MOVING TO A NEW AREA

New decade, new beginnings. That was the plan, at least, before a global crisis got in the way of any semblance of fresh starts. But now we’re into the second half of the year, and the housing market has once again opened up for business, we’re hoping to get our plans – and moving vans – back on track. Moving location, perhaps in the pursuit of pastures new career wise, or simply for the sake of changing things up, is the ultimate way to start afresh.

That said, it’s not a decision to be taken lightly; your exact geography determines so much in life, from your health and wellbeing to job prospects and beyond. To ensure a smooth transition from your old place to new, thorough research is required before you settle on a region, area or neighbourhood. Some key factors to consider include the safety of the neighbourhood and crime rate, and the accessibility of important amenities. Job opportunities and the cost of living should also impact your decision.

The moving process should be exciting, but it can quickly become complex and challenging without proper planning. To achieve a convenient and trouble-free transition, here’s our IDEAL checklist; things to research before moving to a new area.

RECONNAISSANCE

It’s vital to visit any potential new neighbourhoods prior to signing any contracts, as this will give you essential insights into the area, and help you make an informed decision before committing to the move. It’s a good idea to bring a guide book or map, along with other visitor notes depending on the size of the area—whether it’s a small town or big city – so you can get properly well informed from a trustworthy source about the ins and outs of an area.

Spending time in the area will give you a better perception of its environment. Ideally, you’ll stay for a few days, enabling you to find out what it’s like in the day and during the night. For instance, if there are local pubs in the region, there’s a strong possibility of noise but also a sense of community that a great local brings. Wander the local residential streets and watch for signs of neglect, like uncollected rubbish or houses in a state of decay, which are often indicators of the neighbourhood.

A more modern concern worthy of consideration is the pollution levels in a neighbourhood. Some can be deceptively high, even in an area which is largely residential. Fortunately, it’s fairly simple to get the data, updated daily, on the Real Time Air Quality Index (AQI) or for more local, precise measurements, the government’s official DEFRA website, where you can enter your postcode to see today’s data.

It’s also wise to be aware of other factors which may contribute to a potentially hazardous environment, such as being housed near landfill and industrial sites, or within high levels of electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation, the latter of which, in particular, can pose a potential health risk to your family. This radiation isn’t visible, but the right equipment will detect the degree of radiation within the area, and ensure EMF Protection. If you detect high EMF levels or have other safety concerns, consider a different area.

RESEARCH CRIME RATES

We’ll preempt this by saying that crime rates are often erratic and aren’t exactly indicative of the quality and liveability of a neighbourhood. What’s more, they can be fuelled by prejudice and bad policing practice. That said, it’s important to look beyond the benefits of a place and examine its safety, too, to get the full picture. Therefore, it might be wise to research the overall crime rates of the city – not just the usual concerns of anti-social behaviour, say, but also corruption – before committing to move, and talk to locals to get a personal perspective on their experiences and any problems they’ve encountered. Some other things to take note of are:

  • Crime Statistics: Official crime statistics and figures will tell you about the prevalence of crime in the area, and the types of crimes most commonly reported. Some cities will even have crime maps, which show you where crimes tend to occur and the crimes reported.
  • City Reviews: The evaluation of other visitors and residents may provide you with more specific information. Often, you can sense a place’s vibe by reading comments and observations by others.

Do remember, though, that all cities have their less than savoury elements, and that shouldn’t rule them out as somewhere to live. Go into things with an undiscriminating, open mind and embrace the unknown.

FAMILIARISE YOURSELF WITH THE NEIGHBOURHOOD’S AMENITIES

One ideal tip when moving is to familiarise yourself with a neighbourhood’s amenities, since these are a surefire indicator of the comfort you can expect to enjoy once you’re living there. You should take at least one trip to the region and explore the local amenities and attractions before committing to the new location. Find out about the presence, price and convenience of necessities, including:

  • Markets and supermarkets
  • Medical clinics, GP’s surgeries, doctors and pharmacies
  • Dental clinics
  • Post office
  • Schools
  • Council-run facilities like parks and libraries

Of course, you can add more to the list depending on your family’s needs. If some facilities aren’t available nearby, you should consult with locals to find out what they do to accommodate for this. Neighbourhood specific Facebook groups and their related gossip have become increasingly prolific, and are worth checking out for a more ‘unofficial’ insight into the local area. Even if nothing valuable is gained knowledge wise, these groups are always good for a giggle! For a stuffier, more serious view of things, check out Gov.uk’s Local Councils and Services page, which gives an exhaustive rundown of facilities and resources in any given area.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT & PARKING

Some cities don’t have a strong public transport infrastructure, and in the UK, smaller country towns often lack reliable bus or train services. Try to determine the effective and efficient modes of transit in your new area, and decide whether the options suit your lifestyle. Certainly, if you’re not a driver, you’ll require public transport and must pick an area with train or bus links for easy access.

Again, the local council can provide you with information on public transport routes in the town or city.

A STRATEGIC PACKING PLAN

While you’re still weighing up your move, you might want to get ahead with a packing plan, particularly if you’re heading far away. By determining what essential items you’ll need in your neighbourhood, which can be bought once you’ve arrived, and which you might not be able to locate, you can take a precise, premeditated approach, saving you money and time later down the line.

THE BOTTOM LINE

To achieve a smooth transition to a new area, it’s vital you do your research prior to settling on a new place to settle. Ensure you explore the neighbourhood, learn about the crime rates and familiarise yourself with the neighbourhood prior to moving. If proper planning is done in advance, the move will be simple. Only then can you look forward to your new life!

6 QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN FINDING THE IDEAL CATERER FOR YOUR CORPORATE EVENT

Catering is a challenging and demanding job, and is only set to get more complex as the post-COVID rules are readjusted and refined going forward. Sure, catering at its most basic simply involves the cooking of food, but a truly skilled catering company will incorporate drinks, impeccable service, and atmosphere into their offering. We know which we’d prefer.

When discussing corporate catering services, and particularly in the current climate where safety and hygiene are paramount, there are several boxes which a company must tick to meet the high standards required of them. A corporate gathering has different needs to a regular party, and it is necessary for a caterer to be familiar with the corporate culture and the divergent needs of the clientele and their guests to truly make the event sing. With that in mind, here are 6 questions to ask when finding the IDEAL caterer for your corporate event.

WHAT NEW HEALTH & SAFETY MEASURES ARE YOU IMPLEMENTING?

We’re all feeling our way into the new normal, and this is particularly true for the hospitality sector, which is having to learn on its feet about what works and what doesn’t in real time. Though patience is required here, the safety of you and your corporate clients should be the ultimate priority in these turbulent times. So, above all else, you should be asking any potential companies about their new health and safety measures in light of the COVID crisis.

The corporate catering experts Select Catering Services suggest that now, more than ever, it’s vital to ”uphold high standards of personal hygiene, with employees trained and encouraged to wash or sanitise their hands effectively, hand sanitising stations (being) available at multiple premises, and mandatory wearing of masks, gloves and hair caps for all food packers and kitchen personnel’’, as well as ”compulsory screening of all visitors and employees’’. Ask your potential catering company whether they’re implementing similarly stringent measures as a matter of priority.

DO YOU GIVE TASTERS?

The food that is served at any corporate gathering or meeting is typically light, flavoursome and should have that little magic touch which gets clients talking. That is because the goal is to refresh and titillate, rather than induce a food coma not at all conducive to networking.

It is necessary for caterers to ensure special attention is given when providing food or refreshments for a corporate event, as clumsy, heavy fare will likely leave your guests unimpressed, potentially even damaging future working relationships by giving a poor impression of your attention to detail. So, when scouting corporate catering companies, do insist on a trial run of tasters to ensure the quality of food meets your exacting standards.

ARE DRINKS OFFERED?

Whilst the goal at a corporate event is certainly not to get blottoed and embarrass yourself (just us then?), a few liquid refreshments will likely be expected. That said, in recent years an increased focus has fallen on non-alcoholic drinks, and personally, we think a serving of thoughtful, fresh drinks which don’t contain booze is a statement of seriousness and intent which will likely impress clients. So, consider asking your potential corporate catering company if they’re able to accommodate a menu of mocktails and fruit juices. If they’re flexible and adaptable in their approach to the finer details, it speaks volumes about their offering as a whole.

DOES THE COMPANY PRIORITISE SERVICE?

Service by a caterer for a corporate event needs to be professional and sophisticated, and must strike a fine balance between being unintrusive but also highly receptive to your guest’s needs. Ideally, the company should conduct themselves elegantly, and provide you with a manual of sorts on their service ethos. Tightness and professionalism should be a given, but it’s fair to expect your chosen company to go above and beyond the basics. By asking if service is prioritised, you’ll find the very best corporate catering company around.

DO THEY HAVE PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN CORPORATE EVENTS?

When catering for a corporate event, the setup should be professional. Presentation matters to clients, who will be judging the event as a reflection of your company culture. This means tables with the proper uniform décor, thoughtfully selected crockery, and an overall, carefully curated atmosphere with an eye for fine detail, should be obligatory. And this sense of the correct ‘pitch’ of an event only comes with experience. Ask any corporate catering company you’re considering for a resume of their previous work to gauge how accomplished they are in the field.

ARE REVIEWS AVAILABLE ONLINE?

When it comes to catering a corporate event or party, finding the right caterer is essential. And of course, comparisons are required before you make your decision. Don’t be hasty here; any self respecting corporate catering company will have reviews of their work available on a variety of online platforms, so be scrupulous in seeking reviews from trusted sources to best inform your decision.

A CAREER CHANGE IN 2020? HERE’S 4 REASONS WHY NOW IS THE IDEAL TIME

Switching jobs when you have financial responsibilities and perhaps even people dependent on you is not a decision that should be taken lightly. But, with an unprecedented period of upheaval and change to come globally, if you’ve found yourself in a career rut, feeling undervalued and unfulfilled, then now could be the time to consider pastures new.

Many have used lockdown and its associated period of self reflection to question our relationship with work. With a new era ahead of prioritising a healthy work/life balance and ensuring our emotional health receives just as much attention as our physical one, now could be an opportune moment to reflect on your personal strengths, career path and where you want to take it in 2020 and beyond. With that in mind, here’s 4 reasons why now is the IDEAL time for a career change.

NEW DECADE, NEW CAREER

Because we’ve all been doing a little self analysis of late, right? There’s never been a more seismic shift in the collective consciousness and our perspectives of what ‘work’ should mean. As such, many are rightly using recent events – whether that’s being furloughed, working from home more often or, regrettably, being made redundant – to reassess their relationship with their job.

Turn recent negatives into a larger positive. 2020 represents the perfect excuse to break the mould, build a new one, and enjoy professional and personal growth equally.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE

The beauty of modern life and our increasingly liberal attitudes is that anything goes, and we don’t have to follow a defined career path from cradle to grave. Indeed, with increased health and strength in our older years meaning retirement often comes later in life, it’s never too late to try something new or explore a new hustle. Use this sense of possibility to break through that fear barrier that could be preventing you from moving onwards and upwards.

Many who are successful in their career finish up in a very different place from where they started, and in this uncertain economic climate, a job is no longer guaranteed “for life”. Misplaced loyalty or being stuck in a rut due to insecurity will only hinder your personal growth, so don’t let procrastination be a barrier to career change – you just need to have the courage to take the first step.

Those who can find it especially hard are existing managers or would-be managers, as it can be difficult to give up the security of an existing role or make a play for a new one. Remember that it’s never too late.

EMBRACE THE GREAT UNKNOWN

Many of us cling to jobs like we do unsatisfying relationships because of fear of the unknown; forgetting that you don’t have to have your future figured out now. To do so would be to deny possibility and spontaneity, equally. Sure, new horizons can be daunting, but they’re alos hugely exciting and oftentimes, inspiring. We can lessen our nerves by considering route options we may not have even realised were available to us. One way of resetting our compass to point us in the right direction is to train or re-train while in our current employment.

GAINING BY RETRAINING

Retraining isn’t an admission that you’re lacking in skills or experience; it’s an embracing of opportunity. There’s always a chance to be better and look at things differently, and gaining by retraining will expand your horizons further. You may, for instance, want to undergo renovation training if you work in the construction industry but want to do more restoration work, or you may want to train in an entirely different field altogether. There’s nothing stopping you from taking a totally new path from the one you’re on!

Indeed, as the professional development experts at Souters training recommend taking a course which can ‘’combine technical skills in administration with job ready management and soft skills training’’ and we couldn’t agree more; spread your net wide, with a particular focus on adaptable skills, and you’ll give yourself the best chance to appeal to potential employers. In the current job market, flexibility matters.

Retraining will provide you with the ability and confidence to step out of your existing world and into a new one, so don’t be afraid to view your working life as an adventure and be open to wherever it may take you. And, with more and more virtual training sessions being available throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, there’s certainly never been a better time to train for a new career from the comfort of your own home.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST ART FOR YOUR HOME: 5 SIMPLE STEPS

Ideal for injecting some personality into your house

We’re not all blessed with a discerning, appreciative eye for great art. In fact, some of us are even comfortable with admitting that, more often than not, we don’t get the latest sculpture made from coat hangers, or the painting which is simply several dots on an otherwise blank canvas. But though we might find ourselves feeling a little out of depth at the Tate Modern or New York’s MoMA, we’d still love to have some funky, interesting pieces hanging up at home.

Where to start in choosing the best art for your home when you’re not a connoisseur of culture? You can still curate an artistic feel about the home, making your space aesthetically pleasing and just a little intriguing too, with these 5 simple steps on how to choose the best art for your home.

CONSIDER YOUR STYLE

When you’re choosing a piece of art for your home, you’ve first got to define your style. A daunting task, we realise, but a decision necessary if you’re going to have that all important sense of synergy about the home.

First off, consider the style of the rest of your gaff. Have you got an art-deco aesthetic going on, with pops of colour and shapes, or is your place channelling something more minimal? Are there strict tonal schemes in each room or have you mismatched your colourscape? You won’t want to choose art that doesn’t fit in with the rest of your decor, so it’s important to closely consider these details. Unless, of course, you’re going for that chaotic look. In which case, click on that ol’ back button and check out a different article on IDEAL.

You should also decide which type of art you are looking for. Would you prefer a painting, a photography piece or perhaps a pottery sculpture? Answer these questions before you get shopping to ensure you’re making an informed choice and not wasting your time eternally browsing.

Of course, you should also consider what you already have in your home to make sure that it fits in. For example, cycling photography prints make great gifts, and if you’ve recently received one then you may want to display it as your centrepiece. In that case, you may want to purchase further photographs in order to maintain the aesthetics of your home.

CHOOSE THE SIZING

Next up, you need to decide which size is appropriate for your space. If the room dwarfs the piece, it’ll get lose and become a footnote rather than focal point. On the flip side, if your carefully chosen artwork is too dominant in a smaller space, it looks deliberate and clumsy, rather than seamless.

These things matter. So, choose the room which you intend your chosen art piece to go in, measure the wall and go from there. Large scale paintings are perfect to create a luxurious and dramatic effect; however, these are best suited to larger rooms. For a smaller room, choose several small frames and create a feature wall.

SET A BUDGET

The price of an artwork can be erratic, surprising and sometimes, quite frankly, rather more than you bargained for. There’s a danger here that you fall in love with a piece, allow your heart to set like glue on it, then unearth a price tag you hadn’t expected. Disappointment or a dented bank balance follows, and no one wants either of those things, right?

Therefore, before you start shopping, it’s essential to set yourself a budget. Perhaps you’ve got some savings and are looking to splash out on an expensive art piece? Expensive art can be a wise investment; you might even end up selling it for a profit later down the line. Maybe, instead, you’re looking for a budget piece created by a local artist which is unique and one of a kind? In this case, hit the galleries in your area and see if you can get yourself a deal. They who dares wins, and all that.

ONLINE SHOPPING OPTIONS

If you’re looking to buy an art piece online, your options are as endless as the thousands of Google pages a simple search yields. It’s best to start with some of the bigger art purveyors online, or you’re simply going to get lost in the paradox of choice. To get you started, try checking out the Saatchi app and Etsy marketplace.

Saatchi Art App: This app connects artists and buyers, with a beautiful range of illustrations, paintings, and sculptures. One of the best things about the app is that you can use the VR feature to check out what an art piece will look like in your home.

Etsy: Etsy marketplace is a fantastic place to find up and coming artists. There’s a huge range of artwork available here, and much of it is affordably priced. Shopping on Etsy is a fantastic way to support small businesses.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FRAME

You won’t want to buy a beautiful art piece and put in an ugly frame; that would be heresy and simply undo all your good work in being so scrupulous with your search. Whether you’re looking for A4 frames for a bespoke, small piece, or larger A2 frames for something more expansive, spend enough time shopping around to get the right look and material. Oak frames offer a wonderfully classic look while plain black frames are ideal for minimal interior design, particularly against a white wall.

THE BOTTOM LINE

A carefully selected artwork can do wonders for the aesthetics of your house, whether it’s to improve your home office or add personality to your living room. Just make sure you’re diligent and discerning in your search to ensure you get great value for money.

HOW TO ADJUST TO NEW SLEEP PATTERNS SEAMLESSLY WHEN TRAVELLING: 8 IDEAL STEPS

We’ve all felt the weight of jet lag and the havoc it wreaks on those first few days of holiday, particularly when travelling somewhere far-flung. But what if there was a way to avoid those groggy, tentative first steps on foreign soil?

Flying long haul can be particularly disruptive to your sleep patterns as your body may find itself unable to adjust quickly to the new time zones and a restless (or too restful!) flight. Though a little post-flight sluggishness is inevitable, a disrupted sleep-wake cycle or a bad case of jet lag can prevent you from making the most of the day ahead. It also risks starting off your holiday on the wrong foot.

Though jet lag is only a temporary sleep disorder, it can still lead to daytime fatigue, loss of appetite, headache and may even cause insomnia later down the line. With that in mind, it’s best to take preventative measures to stop it ruining the first days of your holiday. So, here’s how to adjust to new sleep patterns seamlessly when travelling in 8 IDEAL steps.

ALTER YOUR SLEEP SCHEDULE BEFOREHAND

Prevention is better than cure, as the experts so often advise, and as such, it’s generally a wise move, in the days leading up to your trip, to gradually adjust your sleeping pattern to the time zone of your destination in mind.

As a general rule, our body is capable of adjusting to a new time zone at the rate of only one or two time zones per day. Therefore, an incremental approach works well; simply set your alarm an hour earlier (or later) each night to slowly readjust to a different time zone.

SLEEP SAVVY

Be sure to give your body its required amount of sleep on the night before you start your journey, regardless of that Christmas Eve like excitement so many of us feel the night before a holiday.

This is a must because it’s highly advisable that you refrain from sleeping during a daytime flight; there’s no quicker path to a confused, malaligned sleep pattern during your trip. If you’re looking for proper precision in this department, consider scheduling your flight in a way that you reach your destination around the time that you would normally wake up.

SAY NO TO NAPPING

It is equally important that you ward off the urge to take a nap soon after landing. Yep, so many of us have nodded off in the taxi from the airport, but it’s a good idea to fight those drooping eyelids if you can, because doing so will help your body to generate enough sleep drive throughout the day for you to fall asleep easily in the night.

You may find it difficult to fix your sleep pattern if you succumb to napping. What’s more, that sense of sleep inertia after a nap isn’t exactly the perfect launchpad to an afternoon of exploring a new location.

PERFORM LIGHT ACTIVITY

Though there’s a temptation to prescribe aerobic activity as the solution to just about anything, it’s for good reason. And, surprise surprise, exercise is a crucial step in adjusting your body to the new sleep patterns and demands of a different time zone.

So, if you’re looking to sleep soundly in a foreign bed, engage in a cardio activity like jogging or brisk walking soon after waking up and a couple of hours prior to bed. The increased activity and heat generated by the body helps reset the circadian rhythm.

MIND THE FLUIDS

Dehydration can intensify the effects of a jet lag but the solution is simple; drink enough water so as to make sure that your body is properly hydrated throughout the journey. On the flipside, avoid beverages that can alter your sleep pattern, such as caffeinated drinks and alcohol. Though many may consider alcohol a good way to help you fall asleep on a flight, studies show that it generally affects the later part of your sleep, thus interrupting your valuable REM sleep stage.

EXPOSURE TO LIGHT IS KEY

Our biological clock needs the appropriate exposure to light so that our circadian rhythm stays intact. The sleep hygiene experts recommended that you expose yourself to daylight once you reach your destination, if that’s possible.

Taking a quick walk outside is also a good way to resist the urge to take a nap and doing this every day on your holiday will provide your body with the natural light it needs to adapt to a new time zone. For the same reason, avoid blue light-emitting devices and other bright sources of light close to bedtime so that your body can prepare itself for the sleep ahead.

CARRY THE ESSENTIALS

One needs to be mindful of the external noise and light generated on the plane and in a new location to get a better night’s sleep while travelling. Therefore, be sure to carry an eye-mask and a comfortable pair of earplugs while travelling so that you don’t find difficulty in sleeping on-board or in your new hotel, where noise levels can sometimes be high.

CONSUME MELATONIN

Melatonin is the sleep-inducing hormone produced naturally by the body’s pineal gland. Small doses of the sleep-aid can also be purchased in the form of supplements without a prescription and can be really useful in fighting jet lag.

It should prove sufficient in helping you fall asleep at the preferred time according to your new sleep pattern, by helping your body produce the hormone. Alternatively, a diet including foods rich in melatonin such as nuts, eggs, fish, cottage cheese, raspberries and bananas, can help you sleep more soundly.

THE BOTTOM LINE

To adjust to the new time zones, rhythms and demands of an unfamiliar country (and bed) you should take active measures to best equip both body and brain with the tools it needs to sleep more soundly. By adopting the above tips, you can enjoy your holiday refreshed and alert. Bon voyage and bonne nuit.

THE HOSTESS WITH THE MOSTEST: 6 TIPS ON MAKING YOUR HOME MORE PARTY FRIENDLY

There’s nothing quite like socialising with friends and family, and the warm, convivial feeling it brings. For a few hours, it can feel like all is right with the world and that stuff raging beyond is just an illusion. Right now, we all need a little escapism, hey? Unfortunately, the new norm has limited the opportunities to socialise in public but if the Killers have taught us anything, it’s that a negative can be turned into a positive. Quite frankly, the changing landscape is the perfect reason to revamp your home to welcome in guests.

Yep, right now (and we think we’ve interpreted current government advice correctly), small socially distanced but sociable gatherings at home are the perfect way to spend time with loved ones without the risks of being around hundreds of people. With that in mind, here’s how to become the hostess with the mostest, with our 6 tips on making your home more party friendly.

INJECT THE FUN FACTOR

Just because we’re all adults here doesn’t mean fun should be replaced with functional. Nope, remove those extra seven letters and all the baggage that those extra years bring, and instead embrace your frivolous side.

If you plan to entertain guests on a frequent basis, it makes sense to kit out your house with fun items which encourage out the inner child in your guests. Whether that’s achieved by adding competitive games, prompts and props for social activities, or a home entertainment system is up to you. Either way, the right investments might even lift the monotony of daily life as well as bringing colour to your weekends. When well researched, they may even add value to the home, too.

Of course, with hostessing with aplomb the focus here, you’ll want to consider the people most likely to visit, and play to the crowd accordingly. This should help guide your decision-making throughout the upgrade and ‘funification’ (nope, not ‘unification’, spell check) process.

CONSIDER KITCHEN REDESIGN

When it comes to hosting parties at home, the kitchen is often the hub of activity. From preparing food to serving drinks, the lovely kitchen space ensures your guests are comfortable, relaxed and entertained.

However, an outdated or poorly designed kitchen can make hosting a party a stressful experience. That’s why a kitchen redesign can be an excellent investment for homeowners looking to make their homes more party-friendly.

One of the key elements of a successful kitchen renovation is having the right windows installed. Replacing old or damaged windows with newer, more energy-efficient models can help elevate the look and comfort of your kitchen.

Energy-efficient replacement windows can help regulate temperature, ensuring that the space is comfortable for cooking and entertaining. They also provide better insulation, keeping out unwanted noise from the outside.

When choosing the right windows for a kitchen redesign, there are several options to consider:

  • Double-hung windows are trendy as they allow for easy ventilation and cleaning
  • Bay windows can provide an attractive focal point for your space while visually enlarging it
  • Correctly installed skylights are best for natural light and a unique touch

Overall, a kitchen redesign focusing on new windows can be a game-changer for anyone looking to make their home more party-friendly. By improving the look and comfort of the kitchen, homeowners can create a space that is not only functional and energy-efficient but also welcoming and enjoyable for guests.

BUILD A LUXURY HOME BAR

Whether your social events will be parties or BBQs, refined dinner party nights or afternoons of watching sport, alcohol will likely be involved. For better or for worse, us Brits enjoy a drink, but it needn’t be warm cans of Foster’s and long opened bottles of red which are turning into vinegar. Indeed, one of the great things about being the hostess is that you’re in control of the drinks menu, and can be as refined as you like with what you serve.

Though we all craved a pint in our local during lockdown, a luxury home bar might actually serve up more enjoyment than a socially distanced pub setting now that the novelty of the latter has worn off. For the very best transformation, try incorporating a stylish wine cellar design. This shows you mean business, and will wow guests time and time again. It’s a statement of serious intent, make no mistake.

GO OPEN PLAN

Socialising is far easier when you have larger spaces to do it in. And right now, with the two metre rule required within the domestic setting, an open, sweeping space represents a safer way to do so. Though it’s a far more all encompassing renovation project than simply installing a ping pong table or investing in a wine rack, opening up your ground floor will add value to your home and make it a more genial place to spend time.

Yep, the open plan approach to interior design can turn the entire ground floor into one truly stunning living space. If you’re looking to go further, the introduction of sliding doors will connect the property to your garden with stunning results. Additionally, they’ll boost the opportunities for natural lighting to enter the home.

If you need to remove an internal wall, it’s best to speak to an expert. This is a job which you shouldn’t take into your own hands, unless you want those hands to be covered in rubble and quite possibly injured. If all this sounds a step too far into the unknown, you can also make rooms feel better suited to social activities by simply rearranging the furniture. Well, why didn’t you say so earlier?

REDESIGN THE GUEST ROOM

Spare bedrooms often go unloved, becoming a dumping ground for excess and clutter when they could be so much more than that. Don’t allow yours to become little more than a storage space that you’ll hurriedly clear out before having guests over. It’s stressful and, quite honestly, a poor use of both space and time. Thankfully, very simple changes can make all the difference.

For the perfect guest room setting, you should use a lighter colour scheme to make the space feel bigger and more welcoming. What’s more, a mattress with medium firmness delivers comfort for all. Fresh bedsheets and a small amount of storage will further enhance the sense that this is a room which is more than just an afterthought. If you’re being really thoughtful with the space, fitting a lock on the door is also beneficial for maximising guest’s privacy.

THINK ABOUT PARKING

When people come to visit, it certainly helps if they have a place to park. Otherwise, the safety of their vehicle is a constant niggling worry getting in way of those carefully curated games and drinks you’ve spent so long considering. Therefore, getting a driveway installed may be one of the smartest investments you’ll make in cultivating a welcoming domestic vibe. The added convenience and privacy is another step to improving your daily life while financial rewards can also follow as value is added.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Whether you’re planning to host frequent events or just the odd party to bring some colour to your life, the above can really help create a better home that makes the right impression on guests and allows them to loosen up and feel relaxed in this stressful, uncertain time. With all that’s going on outside the four walls and safety of home, there’s never been a better time to do make your place somewhere you and friends truly want to spend time.

HOW TO SAVE MONEY ON A UK STAYCATION: 8 IDEAL STEPS

The latter half of 2020 looks set to see the majority of Brits swapping holidays abroad for a staycation in the UK. What’s more, with finances and the future uncertain many will be looking to do so cheaply. Whether you’re earning less than you used to thanks to being furloughed, or just need a cheap break to escape the drudgery of working and living from home (#lfh…will that catch on?) then a UK staycation could be ideal.

Via some smart, simple hacks, you can have a fantastic holiday on terra firma without breaking the bank. With that in mind, here’s how to save money on a UK staycation.

CHECK WHAT’S INCLUDED

When you’re pricing up your accommodation for a staycation, make sure you double-check what’s included as extra costs on accommodation can quickly add up. Be diligent – scrupulous, even – about these hidden extras, and ask the right questions prior to entering those debit card details. Does the company ask you to pay extra for bedding? Could you save money by taking your own with you? Is the wifi included? Do you have a dongle you could bring along? Will you need to pay a security deposit?

Check for any extra costs, and take all these costs into account when you’re working out how much your holiday will cost you. The price advertised isn’t necessarily the price that you will pay.

STAY WITH FRIENDS OR FAMILY

If you’re lucky enough to have friends or family with a big enough house to host you, in an area that you’d like to visit, then ask them if you can stay. Whilst we’re not suggesting anything subversive, you could couch your words as a friendly visit and use the opportunity to explore a different part of the UK in the process. Just make sure you arrive with some flowers or a bottle of wine to say thank you!

What’s more, if you know someone who owns a holiday property or a caravan in the UK, perhaps see if you could use it, at a cheaper rate than they would usually let it out? If you don’t ask, you don’t get, as they say. Keep digging; should you know of friends in a similar position, who want a cheap holiday, why not suggest a house swap? Lay some clear ground rules for using each other’s houses, and then switch for a week. Both of you get a change of scene, and you get somewhere free to stay. Leave a guide to the local area for the people staying in your house and ask them to do the same for you to really make the trip feel like a proper, paid for escape.

LOOK FOR VOUCHER CODES

Before committing to booking any staycation, it’s first conscientious (not to mention purse friendly) to look around for some voucher codes on sites like NetVoucherCodes.co.uk to see if there are any discounts on and vouchers for accommodation, package holidays, or for day trips to take while you’re away. There are more often more vouchers around during off-peak times, so if you don’t need to travel during school holidays, you might be able to find some great deals. Google is your friend, here.

SAVE ON PETROL

If you’re going to drive a long way for your UK trip, then you should take the cost of your petrol into account as well. And in doing so, do endeavour to look for ways to save money on the petrol your holiday will need.

Use loyalty points, if you have them, and keep an eye out for cheap petrol prices on the road; the discrepancy between service stations is surprisingly erratic. As a general rule of thumb, should you need to stop for petrol on the way, then try to stop somewhere like a supermarket forecourt to fill up, as the prices tend to be lower here than they are in motorway service stations.

JOIN THE NATIONAL TRUST

A National Trust membership can work out very cheaply if you intend to staycation regularly in the future; you pay monthly and being a card-carrying member grants you loads of benefits that will help you enjoy a cheaper break.

Indeed, membership entitles you to free entry to over 300 houses and gardens around the UK. This means you can get a free day out almost anywhere in the country when you’re enjoying a staycation. Visiting these properties is a great way to learn more about the area that you’re staying in, and often have beautiful gardens to explore, play areas for the kids, and often have fun, free events for little ones.

Experienced staycationers recommend using their membership to access National Trust properties as much nicer alternatives to stopping at motorway services. No, honestly, hear us out; you can stop at a National Trust place, use your free entry to go in, stretch your legs with a walk in the gardens, use the (much cleaner) loos, and have a coffee that isn’t an overpriced service station version.

GO SELF-CATERING AND MAKE A PICNIC

While you’re away, the spending can soon run away with you. Spending money on day trips, coffees, and meals soon add up. Though a meal out in a restaurant is lovely, let’s be honest here; an alfresco picnic, barbeque or cooking up a delicious meal in your holiday accommodation can be loads of fun too.

So, when you’re looking for places to stay, prioritise self-catering accommodation so you can cook your own meals for much less money. If you’re heading out for the day, pack up a picnic so you don’t have to buy food while you’re out. If the weather isn’t good, you can always enjoy a car picnic. The savings from doing this can mount up a lot, making your time away much, much cheaper, and wonderful, meaningful memories are often created in such circumstances, too

HEAD TO THE BEACH

The money-saving staycation gods were smiling down on us when they created beaches. Because a day out at the beach, in the sun and on the sand, is also a free day out. If the sun is shining, take a picnic and pack up the buckets and spades. Swim in the sea, sunbathe, make sandcastles, or stretch out on your towel with a book, all for the princely sum of nothing.

The beach can also be a great day out even if the sun isn’t shining. Wrap up warm for a good walk to blow the cobwebs out, collect pretty shells and pebbles, and just enjoy being outside. That’s what it’s all about, right?

DON’T FORGET INSURANCE

If you’re trying to travel cheaply, it can be tempting to skip on buying insurance. But the pandemic is making it very difficult to plan in advance, so if you have to cancel or change plans due to travel disruptions, local lockdowns, or illness, without insurance, you could easily end up paying for a holiday that you can’t actually go on. So, to put it bluntly, and right now more than ever, you should always get insurance.

That said, it needn’t cost you a fortune; there are a few ways to save money on travel insurance if you do your homework. Shop around for a good deal, and read the fine print carefully so you know exactly what you’re covered for and what you’re not.

THE BOTTOM LINE

A UK holiday can be just as much fun as a trip abroad. What’s more, it can be a great way to get a break without having to spend a lot of money. Try these tips, and enjoy the best budget staycation of your life!

6 IDEAL THINGS TO DO IN TRINIDAD, CUBA

So, you’re penning your itinerary for that once-in-a-lifetime trip to Cuba? Old Havana is obviously your first port of call, with its jazz clubs, vintage cars and vibrant streets. Perhaps you’re also planning a stop off in Varadero, the island’s most famous beach resort? It’s brash, bold, sometimes beautiful, and certainly worth a visit.

But in our humble opinion, it’s in the town of Trinidad that you’ll find Cuba at its finest. A four-hour drive south-east from Havana, this is Cuba’s best-preserved colonial town, with a gorgeous, cobblestone centre, fascinating and well-documented history, and diverse surrounding landscape, including the Escambray Mountains and Casilda Bay. In short, this is everything you want from a holiday. To keep that schedule of yours tight and concise, here are 6 IDEAL things to do in Trinidad, Cuba.

PALACIO CANTERO & TRINIDAD’S OTHER MUSEUMS

To fully appreciate the majesty of the old colonial centre of Trinidad, with the backdrop of lush jungle and even a little ocean in the distance, you should first ascend the tower of Palacio Cantero, Trinidad’s best vantage point. Once you’ve taken in the town below, the palace itself has so much to offer; the neo-classical, brightly coloured facade mixes local and colonial styles elegantly, and within the mansion, you’ll also find the Museo Municipal de Historia, which displays Cuban antiques and trinkets.

Trinidad is often described as a ‘living museum’, but in the town there are several other genuine museums to check out, too. The Palacio Brunet – another gorgeous colonial mansion – houses the Museo Romantico and more Cuban antiques, and the Museo de Arquitectura Colonial documents and displays some of the history behind Cuba’s gorgeous, unique buildings

Finally, the Museo Nacional de la Lucha Contra Bandidos (National Museum of the Struggle Against Bandits) is worth your time for the name alone. Inside, you’ll find military artefacts relating to the country’s fight against counter-revolutionaries and a climb up their watchtower will grant gorgeous views of the mountains behind.

PLAZA MAYOR

As any visitor to a Latin American city will know, the central square is reliably and so often the beating heart of the place, and the focal point of activity, culinarily and culturally. Trinidad’s Plaza Mayor is no exception. Lined with colourful Cuban buildings and shaded with palm trees, it’s a gorgeous spot to hang out and sip coffee or, better still, rum.

Most accommodation options in Trinidad (most likely a welcoming, convivial homestay arrangement) are located close to the square, so it’s the ideal place to anchor your trip. Several buildings of note sit in the square, too, including the Museo de Arquitectura Colonial we mentioned earlier. Perhaps most importantly, though, is this one…

IGLESIA CATEDRAL DE LA SANTÍSIMA TRINIDAD

Just off Plaza Mayor and looming large over the main square and town as a whole is Cuba’s largest church, Iglesia Catedral De La Santisima Trinidad (the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity). Built in the 19th century, the grand structure houses El Señor de la Vera Cruz (The Lord of the True Cross), a wooden sculpture of Christ with great meaning to the Cuba people.

Interestingly, this sculpture was originally destined for shipping to Veracruz, in Mexico, but stormy weather prevented its ocean crossing three times. Church officials suspected divine intervention at play, and because of that and to this day, the sculpture remains in Trinidad. Because of the significance of this journey (or rather, lack of) the Lord of the True Cross is beloved of Cubans.

EXPERIENCE TRINIDAD’S LIVE MUSIC SCENE

Cuba’s, and in turn Trinidad’s, live music scene is frankly thrilling, and while you’re in town it’s obligatory to catch a show or two. Not that there’s any chance of missing one; next to the cathedral in Plaza Mayor, Casas de Musica is one of the country’s premier live music and dancing spots. Open-air and largely centred around the Catedral’s staircase, there’s a salsa performance at around 10pm each evening, which often descends into a raucous affair pretty quickly.

If your dancing shoes are still itching for more action afterwards, then Disco Ayala is the area’s main night club. Just a ten-minute walk from Casas de Musica and housed in a cave, it doesn’t get lively until late, but from around midnight onwards, expect large crowds and a sweaty dancefloor. That’s your evening written, then. What fun!

TOPES DE COLLANTES

Trinidad’s surrounding natural beauty is one of the reasons why a visit here is essential if you’re in Cuba, and just 10 miles from the city is Topes de Collantes, part of the Escambray Mountains, and a nature reserve.

Here you’ll find the cascading waterfalls Vegas Grande, El Rocio and more, which can be reached via an enjoyable hour’s hike to its peak through lush vegetation and jungle where you’ll see butterflies and birds native to Cuba fluttering across your path.

Perhaps the highlight, though, is El Nicho park, which has a waterfall and several pools perfect for swimming.

PLAYA ANCON

Speaking of swimming, a trip to the Caribbean wouldn’t feel complete without a jaunt to the beach. Playa Ancón is just a 15-minute drive (or ride in one of Cuba’s iconic taxis for just a couple of pounds) south of Trinidad, and boasts pristine white sand and clear, shallow waters ideal for a dip. After enjoying a morning or afternoon here, you’ll be well rested and refreshed for another evening’s dancing back in Trinidad!

AN ALTERNATIVE WEEKEND IN LONDON FOR SUMMER 2020

Ideal for those looking to dodge the crowds and cliches during their visit to the capital.

As a wiseperson once said, ‘when you’re tired of London, you’re tired of life’.

They had a point. Whether you’re looking for a sedate weekend where you can treat yourself to a spa day in a charming hotel, dance the night away in an uber-hip bar (or, just an Uber) or simply take in the quintessential sights with the family, there are certainly no shortage of ways to spend a weekend in London. Only the boring get bored here, make no mistake.

But like any capital city, London has a wide range of tourist attractions that have become so iconic, so popular and so proliferate on Rough Guides and “Must-See” lists that they stray into the realm of cliche. That, and they’re guaranteed to be heaving.

Those who are already fairly familiar with the city and Very British Things, in general, may want to steer clear; we’ve sipped enough tea, apologised for queuing improperly too often, photobombed a Beefeater and ridden an open-top bus by now, and we want something more from London.

Just as New Yorkers will tell you not to bother getting in line for the Empire State Building (The Rockefeller Tower will give you an equally breathtaking view with half the queueing), many native Londoners will advise you to steer clear of The British Museum, Leicester Square, The London Eye, Madame Tussauds and the rest, if you want to get a real feel for the capital.

Although many of London’s most beloved landmarks have begun to reopen recently, they are by no means the only places where you can enjoy a fantastic weekend in The Big Smoke. Quite the opposite, in fact; there are hidden gems and secret spots ready to give you a real insight into this most famous of cities. With that in mind, here is an alternative weekend in London for Summer 2020, IDEAL for those looking to dodge the crowds and cliches during their visit to the capital.

START YOUR TRIP WITH A DRINK IN A HIDDEN BAR

London has no shortage of super hip bars in which you can wet your whistle, appetite and generally indulge. Whether you’re travelling with your significant other, family or friends, after a lengthy drive or train journey, battling that Greater London traffic on the approach, you’re going to want to find somewhere to relax, enjoy a drink and begin your weekend.

But if you’re looking for a truly memorable place to start your alternative London weekend, don’t flock to the self-consciously trendy bars of Soho or the sometimes self-parody that Camden has become. Instead, why not take a look at one of London’s super cool hidden bars and speakeasies for a dash of theatre with your libation.

What better way to kick off your unconventional visit, for instance, than a trip to the Evans and Peel detective agency in Earl’s Court? Within striking distance of the Earl’s Court train station, this 1920s themed film-noir private detective’s office has a prohibition-era secret! You can’t just wander in and start sipping, however. You have to plan your trip in advance by approaching them with an intriguing case. If they decide to take your case on, you’ll be ushered in through the hidden door in the bookshelf. This slides back to reveal a secret rumpus room where you can enjoy some contraband cocktails. What fun!

CHOW DOWN ON PIE AND MASH

Of course, no getaway is complete without sampling the food of the city, and as such, the history of a place. And London has no shortage of fine dining experiences. In fact, across the city there are no fewer than 67 Michelin star restaurants, including the celebrated Restaurant Gordon Ramsey which has held no fewer than 3 Michelin stars since 2001. Should you be seeking such dining, but in a more affordable setting, check out our tips on London’s best dining secrets and how to experience Michelin level food on the cheap in the capital.

Still, many would argue that if you want to get a real taste for the capital, the best place to do so is from one of the city’s many Pie & Mash shops. This carb-loaded Cockney classic may not offer the most sophisticated dining experience in the capital, but it may just be the most satisfying.

While conventional wisdom dictates that the best pie and mash is to be found in the ol’ East End, there’s somewhere to get some delicious pie and liquor (and, if you’re feeling adventurous, some jellied eels) in nearly all the boroughs. Time Out has an excellent guide to the city’s many Pie & Mash spots including the famous G Kelly in Bethnal Green; check it out!

EXPLORE KEW GARDENS

If you want to see a beautiful example of British opulence, away from the crowds of Buckingham, Hampton Court et al, then look no further than the far less tourist-y Kew Palace on the banks of the Thames.

Dating back to the early 1600s, this charming palace is home to the stunning Royal Botanic Gardens, informally known as Kew Gardens. Only a half hour’s drive from central London, this is more than just a place to go and see stunning trees and plants; it’s also an important spot on the botanical map, housing rare flora and fauna, some of which are exclusive to the Gardens.

Indeed, Kew Gardens is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has over 50,000 living plant species that you can visit. A perfect spot for those who love nothing more than to stroll in the humble beauty of nature after exploring the man-made extravagance of the palace; the perfect juxtaposition, we think..

Want to see what you’ll be in for when you visit? You can even take a virtual tour of the stunning gardens by clicking here

STEP BACK IN TIME WITH A VISIT TO DENNIS SEVERS’ HOUSE

Like any capital city, London has a rich history that visitors love to engage with. Do you enjoy the theatricality of The Sherlock Holmes Museum in Baker Street? Don’t let the convincing mock-up fool you. That address on the iconic street didn’t actually exist when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle first penned the beloved adventures of The Great Detective.

Something for genuine, perhaps? If you want to feel as though you’re stepping back in time (without being sold quite so many books and DVDs), you may want to check out the unconventional time capsule that is Dennis Severs’ House in trendy Spitalfields.

This lovingly restored Huguenot house has ten rooms that are bedecked in period decorations and furnishings from different eras. This creates little snapshots of life in the area, from 1724 to 1914. These snapshots of still-life drama are made real with a tour given by silent guide.

Why is the guide silent, you might ask? Because the rooms don’t just contain period decor and curios; they actually come alive with the sounds, sights and even smells of period-accurate activities. This makes it an immersive and multisensory experience that feels much more authentic than your typical museum experience, and that silence serves to provoke your imagination to fill in the blanks!

VISIT SOME WHOLLY UNCONVENTIONAL MUSEUMS

We all know The British Museum, The National Gallery and the Natural History Museum. Yet while museums are a fantastic way to engage with the capital’s culture and history, we certainly don’t blame those who want to try something a little less conventional and delve into a history less documented.

And for those who want to expand their minds while experiencing something a little different, London has no shortage of unconventional, provocative and downright weird museums to enrich your visit.

Want to scare yourself rigid? You may find a visit to the infamous Clown’s Gallery museum far more terrifying than anything you’ll see at the London Dungeon. The fact that queues are far shorter, too, is certainly a bonus. Found in Cumberland Close in Wimbledon, this seemingly innocuous little gallery boasts a celebration of all things clownish within, displaying photos, props, costumes and wigs used by some of the country’s most famous clowns. You’ll have to plan your visit with precision, though; the gallery is only open on the first Friday of each month.

Particularly of interest are the museum’s collection of eggs. Yes, eggs! Practitioners of the art of clowning take their craft surprisingly seriously, and tradition dictates that no two performance can share the same makeup aesthetic. As such, to prevent plagiarism, performers would paint their unique look onto an egg (first real eggs and then ceramic ones) to establish individuality. This museum houses a collection of over 200 of these vintage eggs.

Alternatively, for lovers of the cheerfully gauche, see the capital’s largest collection of neon signs at God’s Own Junkyard. This salvage yard in Walthamstow has a truly prodigious collection of signage from throughout the ages including an extensive range of neon signs. The owner was the late, great veteran neon artist Chris Bracey, who designed neon signs for Soho sex dungeons and Hollywood blockbusters alike. His works can be seen in pictures as diverse as Byzantine, Eyes Wide Shut and the first Captain America movie, amongst other showcase platforms.

Or, do you want to see a museum that celebrates London’s very earliest history? Then check out the London Mithraeum Roman Temple to see antiquities that predate the birth of Christ. This temple, devoted to one of their gods, Mithras, was discovered in 1954 and offers a far more immersive and theatrical experience than your average museum.

The London Mithraeum is located beneath Bloomberg’s European headquarters, and the ancient temple has been restored to look just how it did when it was first excavated. A glitzy presentation using lighting design, audio recordings and dry ice makes this a theatrical and immersive experience that’s not to be missed. Entrance is free but it’s essential to book in advance.

THE BOTTOM LINE

The beauty of London is that it is so many things to many people, constantly evolving, shape shifting and reinventing itself. And while it certainly has its fair share of tourist traps, there is equally no shortage of places where adventurous tourists can go to avoid the crowds and experience the sights, sounds, tastes and smells of the capital that lie off the beaten track.

7 TIPS FOR CALMING RESTLESS THOUGHTS WHICH WON’T LET YOU SLEEP

We’re sure you’ve noticed that every person on the planet has a different energy. Some are peaceful at heart; measured, composed and chilled out to the core. Others, it has to be said, are a little more antsy. And sure, sometimes this latter energy can be a good thing, helping us maintain our attention to detail and ensuring that we’re always on the ball. Channel that restlessness right, and results can be rewarding.

However, if you feel too restless to sleep at night, it can have a whole host of negative impacts on your body and mind. We’ve all had racing thoughts once in a while which have prevented us dropping off to sleep quickly, but when it’s regularly affecting the quality of your zeds, action needs to be taken. With that in mind, here are 7 tips for calming restless thoughts which won’t let you sleep.

AIM FOR A ROUTINE

First of all, if you’re getting into bed late with regularity, straight from a stressful or stimulating activity, then settling down quickly and quietly is going to be tough.

Stop making things hard for yourself! One of the best ways to help the body and brain get in a state of restfulness efficiently is to make them associate certain times and places with the very act of getting restful.

Just like our body gets hungry when it knows its mealtime is just around the corner, so too can it naturally get tired when it knows it’s bedtime. That’s if we keep up some consistency, of course. One way to do that is to figure out what time you usually need to wake up at, then use a sleep clock to work backwards and help you find out what time you should be going to bed. Slowly but surely, your body clock will set itself accordingly.

WORK IT OUT

You don’t want to work out too close to bedtime (a racing heart can equal racing thoughts, after all) but it can be very helpful to do so a couple of hours before bed, to rid yourself of any pent up energy you’ve accumulated throughout the day. Indeed, a study by Harvard found that those who did regular evening exercise both fell asleep faster and slept more deeply. And that’s why you’re here right?

Yep, though it’s sometimes suggested that exercise at night hurts your ability to sleep, when timed correctly, the opposite is actually true. Working out at night has been shown to have a host of benefits such as improving your ability to burn fat, since your body isn’t trying to store as much energy to get through the day, what with the day almost being over.

TAKE TIME TO SLOW YOUR THOUGHTS

When you get in bed, does it feel like your mind starts listing off all of your worries, all of the things you need to do, and even some silly thing you blurted out years ago? Though slowing down your thoughts might sound impossible, with the help of meditation, it’s eminently plausible.

This all starts by nurturing the right environment in which to ‘take a moment’. Set up a meditation den which allows you dedicate time and space to your practice, and make a session part of your nightly ritual.

If you’re not sure how to meditate, then there are plenty of guided meditation and mindfulness apps out there which can help you get used to the process. Don’t worry if you don’t immediately get into it, or if at first sitting down and doing nothing feels a little frivolous or counterproductive; the art of practising mindfulness and focusing on one thought at a time only doesn’t come naturally to everyone. Persistence is key here; when you start noticing results, it’s a magical thing.

WRITE AWAY YOUR WORRIES

Another way to avoid having your worries bounce around your head all night long, with only the ceiling above a lent ear, is to put some distance and objectivity between you and those thoughts.

One of the best ways to do this is by keeping a journal. By writing down your thoughts, you’re in essence releasing them from the prison of your brain and freeing them onto the page. A little overly poetic, perhaps, but we’re writing and riffing here, aren’t we?

This externalizing of your issues can be really beneficial to calming those restless thoughts which won’t let you sleep. For one, you are less likely to keep fixating on them once they’re down on the paper.

What’s more, writing down your issues can actually give you some perspective, helping you look at your issues from a new angle, whether it’s as soon as those words are down on the page or when you’ve had some time away from them and can read them back the following morning. Suddenly yesterday’s obsession becomes today’s inconsequential. And that’s a refreshing feeling.

SET THE SCENE FOR BED-TIME

As a wiseperson should have definitely once said; ‘’a chaotic, crowded room doesn’t for a sound sleep make’’. Hmm, did that come out right?

Anyway, it’s essential for a distraction free sleep that you’re creating as relaxed an environment as possible before you head to bed. One of the most common ways that people do this is with aromatherapy, using scents such as lavender oil, chamomile oil, and ylang-ylang to evoke a peaceful space.

You should also be ritualistic about how you take the time to prepare yourself and the bedroom for sleep. The simple act of ‘getting ready’ for sleep can give your body the time and prompts it needs to switch gears, which means it’s more likely to start slowing down as soon as your head hits the pillow. Perhaps fold your clothes neatly for the following day, or switch the lights in your living room to ‘night time’ mode every evening at the same time. Your brain will respond to these cues favourably and most crucially, with a more restful mindset.

AVOID USING THE BEDROOM FOR OTHER THINGS

One tip that’s worth following; regardless of whether you’re having trouble sleeping or not, is to make sure that you’re only using the bedroom for its intended purposes: sleep and intimacy. Yep, you know what we mean by the latter – nudge nudge, wink wink – but it’s the former which we’re devoting this article to, so we’ll park that smutty talk for now.

Anyway, our mind creates associations between spaces and the activities we use those spaces for. As such, if you use your bedroom as your home office or as your main workout space, then you’re in danger of putting up mental barriers to it being your sleep space instead. Being mentally in-gear to get to work or to workout is not conducive to a good night’s sleep, to put it mildly.

DON’T BATHE YOUR EYES IN BLUE LIGHT

We’re sure you’ve heard this one before. We’re also sure it’s something you (and all of us) find surprisingly hard to follow. Yep, the need to avoid exposing your eyes to blue light before you go to bed is a well-documented one. This light, which is produced by the digital displays of monitors, smartphones, and similar devices, has been shown to make it harder to get to sleep in a variety of studies.

This particular kind of light is better than most at keeping your brain active and alert, to the point that it can add 20-30 minutes of waking time to your night before you fall asleep. As such, you should aim to avoid blue light for at least 30 minutes before you go to bed. Easier said than done, we know, but it’s a change well worth implementing.

THE BOTTOM LINE

By bearing the tips above in mind, firstly; we pray your mind isn’t racing with new ideas. That would rather defeat the point of the article. Secondly, and more seriously, we hope that the next time you lay your head down to rest, it’s a little more tranquil in there.

6 SIMPLE HACKS TO SAVE MONEY EACH MONTH

Ideal for those seeking solutions to overspending.

For better or for worse, saving money and running a manageable budget is one of the main markers of adulthood and an indicator of a stable, sensible outlook. Should you prioritise a life of reassuring rhythm and routine, then getting a handle on your finances is a must.

However, as additional challenges and pressures develop throughout this year, keeping a stable budget is perhaps more pressing than ever.

Though saving money on a large scale isn’t always easy, with a few small scale changes, it’s certainly possible. Every little helps, as they say, and with that in mind, here are 6 simple hacks to save money each month, IDEAL for those seeking solutions to overspending.

USE CASH

One of the best and simplest ways that you can curtail spending and save some money is to use cash only. Yep, we realise that in modern times, contactless is king, but going old school can actually be really beneficial to budgeting.

The little things we buy every day can be difficult to keep track of when you’re simply waving plastic at them, and these can add up over time. We’ve all been there; before you know it, your bank account is drained thanks to instinctive purchases of chewing gum, hair ties and latte, and you’re not even sure how it happened.

We exaggerate, of course;  no one ever bought a house by cutting back on the avocado on toast. But, the easiest way to keep track of your spending and keep it under control is to keep your credit card stashed and use cash only. That way, you physically see every pound you part with.

NEGOTIATE NEW RATES

All too often we pay our utility and other bills as they come in without a second thought, thinking that these rates are fixed and negotiable. However, there is often a degree of wiggle room when it comes to the rates your provider offers you; they want to keep you loyal, after all, and will often shave a few pounds off your bill if you keep on their case.

Indeed, you’d be surprised at the results you can get if you pick up the phone and ask your provider to review their rates as a gesture to reward you for your loyalty. If they won’t shift, shop around and see if any of their competitors are offering a better deal. A bit of short term energy expended can pay off handsomely in the long run.

REVIEW YOUR TRANSPORT COSTS

One of the biggest costs in a budget tends to be transport, whether that’s the daily commute or regular refills of the petrol in your car. By reviewing your expenditure in this area and making some cost-cutting changes, you may find some significant savings.

Petrol and other expenses associated with running a car, in particular, are costly and accumulative. Consider whether you can cut back on your car usage and replace this with public transport. If public transport isn’t feasible, investigate carpooling. You can even ask your employer if they will allow you to work remotely all or some of the time – not only will this cut commuting costs, but it will also reduce lunchtime expenses and more.

AUDIT YOUR SHOPPING BILL

Food is an essential expense, but are you spending more than you need to be at the supermarket?

Start by taking out your last supermarket receipt and doing a critical audit; look at the items that are costing you the most, then consider if these are really essential or if cheaper replacements could be made. This doesn’t need to mean you should cut back on fruit and vegetables, or things that bring you joy, but rather, whether you’re getting the best deal compared to other supermarkets and if the brand you’re loyal to really is giving you value for money.

When it comes grocery bills, our friends at Daily Prosper tell us that an easy way to save money on groceries is to plan your meals each week and to check what you already have in your fridge and cabinets before you go shopping. Indeed “Why would you want to buy more of something you already have?” the site dedicated to helping people prosper posits”.

Also critically assess your food wastage: this is not only a waste of food but also money. If you find yourself regularly tossing spoiled food, you are buying too much and could save greatly by only buying what you need.

FIND A GREAT PHONE CONTRACT

In general, contract phones are more expensive than buying a phone outright. However, if you search around and compare the options, you can find great deals on 12, 24 or 36 monthly contracts, as well as deals on your preferred models, such as Apple phone plans or a discount on the latest Samsung if you enter into a lengthier commitment.

Sometimes, phone manufacturers and retailers will offer a special deal on new phones that they are seeking to promote in order to gather reviews that will facilitate more sales. Do your research to identify the best deals as they emerge. Be sure to do your calculations and check how much you will end up paying for the phone over the life of the contract, including all fees and charges, compared to buying a phone outright, but if the sums add up, there are serious savings to be made here.

PAY DOWN YOUR DEBTS

If you’re trying to save up for something, paying off your credit card or personal loan may not feel like your top priority. In fact, it’s an aspect of your outgoings usually confined to the footer. However, paying down your debts is one of the best ways to save money and could substantially contribute to your bank balance in the long term. Paying interest on loans and credit cards is a simple waste of money, and the faster you pay off your debts, the less interest you pay. This will also help you to establish a great credit rating, all of which contributes to a more stable, sensible state of finances for many years to come.

7 TIPS FOR BUILDING YOUR OWN TINY WHEELED HOUSE

Your own what? Yep, the Tiny House Movement is perhaps the cutest thing you’ve never heard of. Promoting the double-pronged interests of architectural intrigue and the joys of minimalising, some urban dwellers have embraced so-called ‘tiny houses’ as a way of decluttering, living more slowly and simply, and saving a fair bit of money, too.

Sign us up! We could all do with a good personal declutter from time to time, and this takes things to the next level. To really enhance that sense of freedom and shedding of life’s baggage, we’re particularly excited about the wheeled version, allowing you to take to the open road and explore, in compact, cosy form. The best part? You can actually build one yourself! With that in mind, here 7 tips for building your own tiny wheeled house.

ENSURE THE TINY HOUSE MOVEMENT IS RIGHT FOR YOU

While we could extol all the benefits of a tiny house (less clutter, potential lower carbon footprint, more savings), before you decide to build one, make sure this type of living is right for you.

While the tiny house movement can be a way to avoid mortgage debt and landlord enrichment, bear in mind that tiny houses usually depreciate in value and are hard to sell on. Also, as they are not attached to any land; as such, many owners report a sense of groundlessness, and tiny houses can be constant reminder of a fragile housing state. Moreover, tiny houses shouldn’t be the governments answer to the housing crisis. Instead, they should be a lifestyle choice, so make sure it’s the right choice for you.

USE PREFAB HOUSES FOR EASE OF ASSEMBLY AND MAINTENANCE

When you start building your tiny house, it is vital that you use the right materials. If you are a newbie at carpentry, it is usually a good idea to purchase a prefabricated house, where are usually made of a used shipping container that is recycled into small size homes. Some DIY tiny home kits are even available to buy on Amazon.

Container house manufacturers mass-produce prefab houses for a very affordable price, with houses like this simple to assemble and maintain. Generally speaking, if you’re building a tiny house for the first time, it’s advisable to just buy a prefabricated one that saves you both time and effort in the long run.

INSULATE YOUR TINY HOUSE PROPERLY

Once you’re finished setting up your prefab tiny house it is important that you insulate it properly. You’re going to be on the move, and the further afield you find yourself, the more temperatures and conditions may fluctuate. If your tiny house isn’t  properly insulated, your travel experience might be uncomfortable.

When it comes to tiny houses, it is best to use spray foam insulation. Spray foam insulation provides greater resistance from mould or mildew because it helps prevent moisture from getting into the walls. It also has excellent cooling and heating benefits. This option also adds more density and sturdiness to your walls.

INSTALL PLUMBING

You’re going to need a working bathroom installed in your wheeled tiny house. Due to the portable nature and size of a tiny house, it can be a bit difficult to install a toilet in the bathroom. But it is doable, and also, essential.

Just make sure that you install a removable septic tank so you can easily dispose of your waste. You should also install an effective water tank system. Remember that there may be days where you will have to travel without a steady water source so your water tank system is key to your comfort and survival on the road.

CHOOSE A SUSTAINABLE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Electricity is a necessity if you own a tiny house and want to keep the lights on. Though we’d love to go seriously old school and do things by candlelight, it’s simply not safe or practical to do so full time. Instead, you should make sure your electrical system is installed properly; have a professional install your wiring and outlets to avoid electrical accidents.

When it comes to selecting a power source, it all really depends on your budget. If you are aiming for a more simplistic design, then a portable battery is a good option. That said, you’ll need to replace it on a regular basis, which can get a bit tedious.

Should you wish to have a more sustainable electrical source, you could invest in a small generator, or better yet solar panels. That way you can constantly replenish your energy source.

CHOOSE A SUITABLE WHEELED PLATFORM

Aside from your tiny house, it is also important that you pay attention to your wheeled platform. This platform is where you will place the tiny house and as such, it needs to be sturdy. Remember that this wheeled platform will support at least half a ton of wood and steel for miles on end. It is also meant to handle the weight without crumbling and prevent the wheels from breaking down.

The platform should also have suitable breaks and a reinforced frame.

MAKE SURE YOUR CAR IS CAPABLE OF TOWING YOUR TINY HOUSE

Aside from your wheeled platform, it is also important that your car is capable of towing your tiny house’s weight. What, you thought your tiny house was going to be rolling down a hill of its volition? Nope, it’s going to need some assistance to keep in motion. Your car should be equipped with a bumper pull that can handle the vast weight and the constant strain of being pulled. As an alternative, consider mini digger hire, which will have ample energy and pulling power for your tiny house.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Building your very own wheeled tiny house may be a very work-intensive project, but it is all worth it in the end. If you hire someone else to build your tiny house for you or buy a prefab house, ensure you do your research. Unfortunately, construction within the tiny house movement is unregulated, leaving owners at risk to bad work and companies going out of business.

Warnings aside, channel that free-wheelin’ energy of the open road, and the freedom which a minimalist living space brings, and get ready for an adventure!

5 OF THE BEST BEACHES IN ZAKYNTHOS, GREECE

The Greek island of Zakynthos, sitting off the country’s south west coast, is one of the jewels in the crown of the azure Ionian sea. Often referred to as Zante for short, here you’ll find holidays to suit everyone, from the hedonistic, carefree vibes of Laganas to the family friendly Tsilivi and beyond.

Though the verdant, lush landscapes inland are certainly attractive, and the Byzantine museum and Venetian Castle fascinating, Zante is most famous for its beaches. And with good reason; they’re as varied and gorgeous as you’ll find anywhere on the planet.

We’ve undertaken the inevitable task of reclining on golden sands the length and breadth of the island in order to narrow it down to just five, to suit all tastes and interests. Whether you’re sailing in Greece and approaching by sea, or simply strolling up in your sandals with the sand between your toes, here are 5 of best beaches in Zakynthos, Greece.

LAGANAS

We had to start here, though you may not wish to. Because Laganas is the most populated, lively beach resort on Zante, for better or worse, and is a major draw for visitors keen on drinking, dancing and debauchery.

Laganas Beach itself, in the south of Zante, looks out on the shallow and calm waters of Laganas Bay, but that’s where the tranquillity ends. It’s the longest beach on the island, stretching to 9km, and backing onto the majority of it are bars and tavernas selling raki and kebabs to the masses until late, and if that’s your thing, it’s a great focal point for your holiday.

If you’re in the area and seeking something more peaceful, nearby Kalamaki Beach is just a 5 minute drive away, and is a protected breeding ground for rare, threatened Loggerhead Caretta-Caretta sea turtles. This means that part of the beach is closed to allow for nesting and egg laying, but the rest is as serene as it comes; there’s no watersports or other activity allowed in the sea here to protect the turtles.

Just south of Laganas (around a half hour walk) is Agios Sostis village. Here, you’ll find a gorgeous, rickety wooden footbridge which takes you across to Cameo island, a pine covered paradise with a couple of bars and a beach. Bliss!

NAVAGIO (SHIPWRECK BEACH)

Navagio Beach (sometimes referred to as Shipwreck Beach or Smuggler’s Cove) is perhaps the biggest draw for tourists visiting Zante. Only reachable by boat, this tiny cove and pebble beach on the island’s north west attracts visitors in their droves each year, here to view the coaster MV Panagiotis, which ran aground in 1980, possibly carrying smuggled goods and contraband, hence the nickname. The wreck itself still sits on the beach, rusted but amazingly preserved, and fascinating to see up close and personal.

The backdrop of turquoise, clear waters and a cliff above certainly frame the shipwreck beautifully, and there are several tour companies running day trips here. It’s also worth viewing Navagio Beach and the wreck of MV Panagiotis from above; you can reach the vantage point at the top of that sheer set of cliffs by car, motorbike or quad bike. It’s around a 45 minute drive from Tsilivi.

VASILIKOS

Rather than being one beach (though we’ll come to our favourite in a minute) Vasilikos is a collection of five villages with adjacent beaches on Zante’s south eastern peninsula, around 10km from Zakynthos City. Here, you’ll find peace and tranquillity abundant, with mountains, forests and olive groves overlooking the beaches meaning there’s less raucous action behind than the likes of Laganas would have you accustomed to. That’s not to say it’s deserted; there’s plenty of quality accommodation options in Zakynthos, and Vasilikos is no exception.

The main beaches here are Porto Kaminia, Saint Nicholas and Gerakas, and all three are lovely, but our favourite here is the latter…

GERAKAS

18km south of the capital, Gerakas beach is one of Zante’s most attractive, with an undisturbed, unspoilt vibe made so because it’s part of the Zakynthos Marine Park, which protects the Caretta-Caretta turtle’s breeding and nesting. From a half hour prior to sunset to a half hour after sunrise, tourists are forbidden from entering the area. During the permitted hours, however, this is one serene spot, with golden sand, scattered rock formations and a large cove with crystal clear water and great swimming opportunities.

MAKRIS GIALOS

Also close to Zante’s main town is Makris Gialos Beach, which has a more traditional continental beach vibe, with chairs and umbrellas for rent, and food vendors selling fresh fruit juices and barbequed meats and fish, with water sports permitted and popular here. Sometimes, that’s all you need, right?

If you’re hungry for a proper sit down meal, several tavernas line the beach. Our pick of the bunch? It has to be Pinarinos, which has a gorgeous terrace overlooking the beach and sea. Specialities include swordfish and rabbit in lemon sauce, but the savvy order from the specials; whatever’s fresh and from the sea, grilled, sounds like heaven to us.
