THE HOSTESS WITH THE MOSTEST: 6 TIPS ON MAKING YOUR HOME MORE PARTY FRIENDLY

There’s nothing quite like socialising with friends and family, and the warm, convivial feeling it brings. For a few hours, it can feel like all is right with the world and that stuff raging beyond is just an illusion. Right now, we all need a little escapism, hey? Unfortunately, the new norm has limited the opportunities to socialise in public but if the Killers have taught us anything, it’s that a negative can be turned into a positive. Quite frankly, the changing landscape is the perfect reason to revamp your home to welcome in guests.

Yep, right now (and we think we’ve interpreted current government advice correctly), small socially distanced but sociable gatherings at home are the perfect way to spend time with loved ones without the risks of being around hundreds of people. With that in mind, here’s how to become the hostess with the mostest, with our 6 tips on making your home more party friendly.

INJECT THE FUN FACTOR

Just because we’re all adults here doesn’t mean fun should be replaced with functional. Nope, remove those extra seven letters and all the baggage that those extra years bring, and instead embrace your frivolous side.

If you plan to entertain guests on a frequent basis, it makes sense to kit out your house with fun items which encourage out the inner child in your guests. Whether that’s achieved by adding competitive games, prompts and props for social activities, or a home entertainment system is up to you. Either way, the right investments might even lift the monotony of daily life as well as bringing colour to your weekends. When well researched, they may even add value to the home, too.

Of course, with hostessing with aplomb the focus here, you’ll want to consider the people most likely to visit, and play to the crowd accordingly. This should help guide your decision-making throughout the upgrade and ‘funification’ (nope, not ‘unification’, spell check) process.

CONSIDER KITCHEN REDESIGN

When it comes to hosting parties at home, the kitchen is often the hub of activity. From preparing food to serving drinks, the lovely kitchen space ensures your guests are comfortable, relaxed and entertained.

However, an outdated or poorly designed kitchen can make hosting a party a stressful experience. That’s why a kitchen redesign can be an excellent investment for homeowners looking to make their homes more party-friendly.

One of the key elements of a successful kitchen renovation is having the right windows installed. Replacing old or damaged windows with newer, more energy-efficient models can help elevate the look and comfort of your kitchen.

Energy-efficient replacement windows can help regulate temperature, ensuring that the space is comfortable for cooking and entertaining. They also provide better insulation, keeping out unwanted noise from the outside.

When choosing the right windows for a kitchen redesign, there are several options to consider:

  • Double-hung windows are trendy as they allow for easy ventilation and cleaning
  • Bay windows can provide an attractive focal point for your space while visually enlarging it
  • Correctly installed skylights are best for natural light and a unique touch

Overall, a kitchen redesign focusing on new windows can be a game-changer for anyone looking to make their home more party-friendly. By improving the look and comfort of the kitchen, homeowners can create a space that is not only functional and energy-efficient but also welcoming and enjoyable for guests.

BUILD A LUXURY HOME BAR

Whether your social events will be parties or BBQs, refined dinner party nights or afternoons of watching sport, alcohol will likely be involved. For better or for worse, us Brits enjoy a drink, but it needn’t be warm cans of Foster’s and long opened bottles of red which are turning into vinegar. Indeed, one of the great things about being the hostess is that you’re in control of the drinks menu, and can be as refined as you like with what you serve.

Though we all craved a pint in our local during lockdown, a luxury home bar might actually serve up more enjoyment than a socially distanced pub setting now that the novelty of the latter has worn off. For the very best transformation, try incorporating a stylish wine cellar design. This shows you mean business, and will wow guests time and time again. It’s a statement of serious intent, make no mistake.

GO OPEN PLAN

Socialising is far easier when you have larger spaces to do it in. And right now, with the two metre rule required within the domestic setting, an open, sweeping space represents a safer way to do so. Though it’s a far more all encompassing renovation project than simply installing a ping pong table or investing in a wine rack, opening up your ground floor will add value to your home and make it a more genial place to spend time.

Yep, the open plan approach to interior design can turn the entire ground floor into one truly stunning living space. If you’re looking to go further, the introduction of sliding doors will connect the property to your garden with stunning results. Additionally, they’ll boost the opportunities for natural lighting to enter the home.

If you need to remove an internal wall, it’s best to speak to an expert. This is a job which you shouldn’t take into your own hands, unless you want those hands to be covered in rubble and quite possibly injured. If all this sounds a step too far into the unknown, you can also make rooms feel better suited to social activities by simply rearranging the furniture. Well, why didn’t you say so earlier?

REDESIGN THE GUEST ROOM

Spare bedrooms often go unloved, becoming a dumping ground for excess and clutter when they could be so much more than that. Don’t allow yours to become little more than a storage space that you’ll hurriedly clear out before having guests over. It’s stressful and, quite honestly, a poor use of both space and time. Thankfully, very simple changes can make all the difference.

For the perfect guest room setting, you should use a lighter colour scheme to make the space feel bigger and more welcoming. What’s more, a mattress with medium firmness delivers comfort for all. Fresh bedsheets and a small amount of storage will further enhance the sense that this is a room which is more than just an afterthought. If you’re being really thoughtful with the space, fitting a lock on the door is also beneficial for maximising guest’s privacy.

THINK ABOUT PARKING

When people come to visit, it certainly helps if they have a place to park. Otherwise, the safety of their vehicle is a constant niggling worry getting in way of those carefully curated games and drinks you’ve spent so long considering. Therefore, getting a driveway installed may be one of the smartest investments you’ll make in cultivating a welcoming domestic vibe. The added convenience and privacy is another step to improving your daily life while financial rewards can also follow as value is added.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Whether you’re planning to host frequent events or just the odd party to bring some colour to your life, the above can really help create a better home that makes the right impression on guests and allows them to loosen up and feel relaxed in this stressful, uncertain time. With all that’s going on outside the four walls and safety of home, there’s never been a better time to do make your place somewhere you and friends truly want to spend time.

HOW TO SAVE MONEY ON A UK STAYCATION: 8 IDEAL STEPS

The latter half of 2020 looks set to see the majority of Brits swapping holidays abroad for a staycation in the UK. What’s more, with finances and the future uncertain many will be looking to do so cheaply. Whether you’re earning less than you used to thanks to being furloughed, or just need a cheap break to escape the drudgery of working and living from home (#lfh…will that catch on?) then a UK staycation could be ideal.

Via some smart, simple hacks, you can have a fantastic holiday on terra firma without breaking the bank. With that in mind, here’s how to save money on a UK staycation.

CHECK WHAT’S INCLUDED

When you’re pricing up your accommodation for a staycation, make sure you double-check what’s included as extra costs on accommodation can quickly add up. Be diligent – scrupulous, even – about these hidden extras, and ask the right questions prior to entering those debit card details. Does the company ask you to pay extra for bedding? Could you save money by taking your own with you? Is the wifi included? Do you have a dongle you could bring along? Will you need to pay a security deposit?

Check for any extra costs, and take all these costs into account when you’re working out how much your holiday will cost you. The price advertised isn’t necessarily the price that you will pay.

STAY WITH FRIENDS OR FAMILY

If you’re lucky enough to have friends or family with a big enough house to host you, in an area that you’d like to visit, then ask them if you can stay. Whilst we’re not suggesting anything subversive, you could couch your words as a friendly visit and use the opportunity to explore a different part of the UK in the process. Just make sure you arrive with some flowers or a bottle of wine to say thank you!

What’s more, if you know someone who owns a holiday property or a caravan in the UK, perhaps see if you could use it, at a cheaper rate than they would usually let it out? If you don’t ask, you don’t get, as they say. Keep digging; should you know of friends in a similar position, who want a cheap holiday, why not suggest a house swap? Lay some clear ground rules for using each other’s houses, and then switch for a week. Both of you get a change of scene, and you get somewhere free to stay. Leave a guide to the local area for the people staying in your house and ask them to do the same for you to really make the trip feel like a proper, paid for escape.

LOOK FOR VOUCHER CODES

Before committing to booking any staycation, it’s first conscientious (not to mention purse friendly) to look around for some voucher codes on sites like NetVoucherCodes.co.uk to see if there are any discounts on and vouchers for accommodation, package holidays, or for day trips to take while you’re away. There are more often more vouchers around during off-peak times, so if you don’t need to travel during school holidays, you might be able to find some great deals. Google is your friend, here.

SAVE ON PETROL

If you’re going to drive a long way for your UK trip, then you should take the cost of your petrol into account as well. And in doing so, do endeavour to look for ways to save money on the petrol your holiday will need.

Use loyalty points, if you have them, and keep an eye out for cheap petrol prices on the road; the discrepancy between service stations is surprisingly erratic. As a general rule of thumb, should you need to stop for petrol on the way, then try to stop somewhere like a supermarket forecourt to fill up, as the prices tend to be lower here than they are in motorway service stations.

JOIN THE NATIONAL TRUST

A National Trust membership can work out very cheaply if you intend to staycation regularly in the future; you pay monthly and being a card-carrying member grants you loads of benefits that will help you enjoy a cheaper break.

Indeed, membership entitles you to free entry to over 300 houses and gardens around the UK. This means you can get a free day out almost anywhere in the country when you’re enjoying a staycation. Visiting these properties is a great way to learn more about the area that you’re staying in, and often have beautiful gardens to explore, play areas for the kids, and often have fun, free events for little ones.

Experienced staycationers recommend using their membership to access National Trust properties as much nicer alternatives to stopping at motorway services. No, honestly, hear us out; you can stop at a National Trust place, use your free entry to go in, stretch your legs with a walk in the gardens, use the (much cleaner) loos, and have a coffee that isn’t an overpriced service station version.

GO SELF-CATERING AND MAKE A PICNIC

While you’re away, the spending can soon run away with you. Spending money on day trips, coffees, and meals soon add up. Though a meal out in a restaurant is lovely, let’s be honest here; an alfresco picnic, barbeque or cooking up a delicious meal in your holiday accommodation can be loads of fun too.

So, when you’re looking for places to stay, prioritise self-catering accommodation so you can cook your own meals for much less money. If you’re heading out for the day, pack up a picnic so you don’t have to buy food while you’re out. If the weather isn’t good, you can always enjoy a car picnic. The savings from doing this can mount up a lot, making your time away much, much cheaper, and wonderful, meaningful memories are often created in such circumstances, too

HEAD TO THE BEACH

The money-saving staycation gods were smiling down on us when they created beaches. Because a day out at the beach, in the sun and on the sand, is also a free day out. If the sun is shining, take a picnic and pack up the buckets and spades. Swim in the sea, sunbathe, make sandcastles, or stretch out on your towel with a book, all for the princely sum of nothing.

The beach can also be a great day out even if the sun isn’t shining. Wrap up warm for a good walk to blow the cobwebs out, collect pretty shells and pebbles, and just enjoy being outside. That’s what it’s all about, right?

DON’T FORGET INSURANCE

If you’re trying to travel cheaply, it can be tempting to skip on buying insurance. But the pandemic is making it very difficult to plan in advance, so if you have to cancel or change plans due to travel disruptions, local lockdowns, or illness, without insurance, you could easily end up paying for a holiday that you can’t actually go on. So, to put it bluntly, and right now more than ever, you should always get insurance.

That said, it needn’t cost you a fortune; there are a few ways to save money on travel insurance if you do your homework. Shop around for a good deal, and read the fine print carefully so you know exactly what you’re covered for and what you’re not.

THE BOTTOM LINE

A UK holiday can be just as much fun as a trip abroad. What’s more, it can be a great way to get a break without having to spend a lot of money. Try these tips, and enjoy the best budget staycation of your life!

6 IDEAL THINGS TO DO IN TRINIDAD, CUBA

So, you’re penning your itinerary for that once-in-a-lifetime trip to Cuba? Old Havana is obviously your first port of call, with its jazz clubs, vintage cars and vibrant streets. Perhaps you’re also planning a stop off in Varadero, the island’s most famous beach resort? It’s brash, bold, sometimes beautiful, and certainly worth a visit.

But in our humble opinion, it’s in the town of Trinidad that you’ll find Cuba at its finest. A four-hour drive south-east from Havana, this is Cuba’s best-preserved colonial town, with a gorgeous, cobblestone centre, fascinating and well-documented history, and diverse surrounding landscape, including the Escambray Mountains and Casilda Bay. In short, this is everything you want from a holiday. To keep that schedule of yours tight and concise, here are 6 IDEAL things to do in Trinidad, Cuba.

PALACIO CANTERO & TRINIDAD’S OTHER MUSEUMS

To fully appreciate the majesty of the old colonial centre of Trinidad, with the backdrop of lush jungle and even a little ocean in the distance, you should first ascend the tower of Palacio Cantero, Trinidad’s best vantage point. Once you’ve taken in the town below, the palace itself has so much to offer; the neo-classical, brightly coloured facade mixes local and colonial styles elegantly, and within the mansion, you’ll also find the Museo Municipal de Historia, which displays Cuban antiques and trinkets.

Trinidad is often described as a ‘living museum’, but in the town there are several other genuine museums to check out, too. The Palacio Brunet – another gorgeous colonial mansion – houses the Museo Romantico and more Cuban antiques, and the Museo de Arquitectura Colonial documents and displays some of the history behind Cuba’s gorgeous, unique buildings

Finally, the Museo Nacional de la Lucha Contra Bandidos (National Museum of the Struggle Against Bandits) is worth your time for the name alone. Inside, you’ll find military artefacts relating to the country’s fight against counter-revolutionaries and a climb up their watchtower will grant gorgeous views of the mountains behind.

PLAZA MAYOR

As any visitor to a Latin American city will know, the central square is reliably and so often the beating heart of the place, and the focal point of activity, culinarily and culturally. Trinidad’s Plaza Mayor is no exception. Lined with colourful Cuban buildings and shaded with palm trees, it’s a gorgeous spot to hang out and sip coffee or, better still, rum.

Most accommodation options in Trinidad (most likely a welcoming, convivial homestay arrangement) are located close to the square, so it’s the ideal place to anchor your trip. Several buildings of note sit in the square, too, including the Museo de Arquitectura Colonial we mentioned earlier. Perhaps most importantly, though, is this one…

IGLESIA CATEDRAL DE LA SANTÍSIMA TRINIDAD

Just off Plaza Mayor and looming large over the main square and town as a whole is Cuba’s largest church, Iglesia Catedral De La Santisima Trinidad (the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity). Built in the 19th century, the grand structure houses El Señor de la Vera Cruz (The Lord of the True Cross), a wooden sculpture of Christ with great meaning to the Cuba people.

Interestingly, this sculpture was originally destined for shipping to Veracruz, in Mexico, but stormy weather prevented its ocean crossing three times. Church officials suspected divine intervention at play, and because of that and to this day, the sculpture remains in Trinidad. Because of the significance of this journey (or rather, lack of) the Lord of the True Cross is beloved of Cubans.

EXPERIENCE TRINIDAD’S LIVE MUSIC SCENE

Cuba’s, and in turn Trinidad’s, live music scene is frankly thrilling, and while you’re in town it’s obligatory to catch a show or two. Not that there’s any chance of missing one; next to the cathedral in Plaza Mayor, Casas de Musica is one of the country’s premier live music and dancing spots. Open-air and largely centred around the Catedral’s staircase, there’s a salsa performance at around 10pm each evening, which often descends into a raucous affair pretty quickly.

If your dancing shoes are still itching for more action afterwards, then Disco Ayala is the area’s main night club. Just a ten-minute walk from Casas de Musica and housed in a cave, it doesn’t get lively until late, but from around midnight onwards, expect large crowds and a sweaty dancefloor. That’s your evening written, then. What fun!

TOPES DE COLLANTES

Trinidad’s surrounding natural beauty is one of the reasons why a visit here is essential if you’re in Cuba, and just 10 miles from the city is Topes de Collantes, part of the Escambray Mountains, and a nature reserve.

Here you’ll find the cascading waterfalls Vegas Grande, El Rocio and more, which can be reached via an enjoyable hour’s hike to its peak through lush vegetation and jungle where you’ll see butterflies and birds native to Cuba fluttering across your path.

Perhaps the highlight, though, is El Nicho park, which has a waterfall and several pools perfect for swimming.

PLAYA ANCON

Speaking of swimming, a trip to the Caribbean wouldn’t feel complete without a jaunt to the beach. Playa Ancón is just a 15-minute drive (or ride in one of Cuba’s iconic taxis for just a couple of pounds) south of Trinidad, and boasts pristine white sand and clear, shallow waters ideal for a dip. After enjoying a morning or afternoon here, you’ll be well rested and refreshed for another evening’s dancing back in Trinidad!

AN ALTERNATIVE WEEKEND IN LONDON FOR SUMMER 2020

Ideal for those looking to dodge the crowds and cliches during their visit to the capital.

As a wiseperson once said, ‘when you’re tired of London, you’re tired of life’.

They had a point. Whether you’re looking for a sedate weekend where you can treat yourself to a spa day in a charming hotel, dance the night away in an uber-hip bar (or, just an Uber) or simply take in the quintessential sights with the family, there are certainly no shortage of ways to spend a weekend in London. Only the boring get bored here, make no mistake.

But like any capital city, London has a wide range of tourist attractions that have become so iconic, so popular and so proliferate on Rough Guides and “Must-See” lists that they stray into the realm of cliche. That, and they’re guaranteed to be heaving.

Those who are already fairly familiar with the city and Very British Things, in general, may want to steer clear; we’ve sipped enough tea, apologised for queuing improperly too often, photobombed a Beefeater and ridden an open-top bus by now, and we want something more from London.

Just as New Yorkers will tell you not to bother getting in line for the Empire State Building (The Rockefeller Tower will give you an equally breathtaking view with half the queueing), many native Londoners will advise you to steer clear of The British Museum, Leicester Square, The London Eye, Madame Tussauds and the rest, if you want to get a real feel for the capital.

Although many of London’s most beloved landmarks have begun to reopen recently, they are by no means the only places where you can enjoy a fantastic weekend in The Big Smoke. Quite the opposite, in fact; there are hidden gems and secret spots ready to give you a real insight into this most famous of cities. With that in mind, here is an alternative weekend in London for Summer 2020, IDEAL for those looking to dodge the crowds and cliches during their visit to the capital.

START YOUR TRIP WITH A DRINK IN A HIDDEN BAR

London has no shortage of super hip bars in which you can wet your whistle, appetite and generally indulge. Whether you’re travelling with your significant other, family or friends, after a lengthy drive or train journey, battling that Greater London traffic on the approach, you’re going to want to find somewhere to relax, enjoy a drink and begin your weekend.

But if you’re looking for a truly memorable place to start your alternative London weekend, don’t flock to the self-consciously trendy bars of Soho or the sometimes self-parody that Camden has become. Instead, why not take a look at one of London’s super cool hidden bars and speakeasies for a dash of theatre with your libation.

What better way to kick off your unconventional visit, for instance, than a trip to the Evans and Peel detective agency in Earl’s Court? Within striking distance of the Earl’s Court train station, this 1920s themed film-noir private detective’s office has a prohibition-era secret! You can’t just wander in and start sipping, however. You have to plan your trip in advance by approaching them with an intriguing case. If they decide to take your case on, you’ll be ushered in through the hidden door in the bookshelf. This slides back to reveal a secret rumpus room where you can enjoy some contraband cocktails. What fun!

CHOW DOWN ON PIE AND MASH

Of course, no getaway is complete without sampling the food of the city, and as such, the history of a place. And London has no shortage of fine dining experiences. In fact, across the city there are no fewer than 67 Michelin star restaurants, including the celebrated Restaurant Gordon Ramsey which has held no fewer than 3 Michelin stars since 2001. Should you be seeking such dining, but in a more affordable setting, check out our tips on London’s best dining secrets and how to experience Michelin level food on the cheap in the capital.

Still, many would argue that if you want to get a real taste for the capital, the best place to do so is from one of the city’s many Pie & Mash shops. This carb-loaded Cockney classic may not offer the most sophisticated dining experience in the capital, but it may just be the most satisfying.

While conventional wisdom dictates that the best pie and mash is to be found in the ol’ East End, there’s somewhere to get some delicious pie and liquor (and, if you’re feeling adventurous, some jellied eels) in nearly all the boroughs. Time Out has an excellent guide to the city’s many Pie & Mash spots including the famous G Kelly in Bethnal Green; check it out!

EXPLORE KEW GARDENS

If you want to see a beautiful example of British opulence, away from the crowds of Buckingham, Hampton Court et al, then look no further than the far less tourist-y Kew Palace on the banks of the Thames.

Dating back to the early 1600s, this charming palace is home to the stunning Royal Botanic Gardens, informally known as Kew Gardens. Only a half hour’s drive from central London, this is more than just a place to go and see stunning trees and plants; it’s also an important spot on the botanical map, housing rare flora and fauna, some of which are exclusive to the Gardens.

Indeed, Kew Gardens is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has over 50,000 living plant species that you can visit. A perfect spot for those who love nothing more than to stroll in the humble beauty of nature after exploring the man-made extravagance of the palace; the perfect juxtaposition, we think..

Want to see what you’ll be in for when you visit? You can even take a virtual tour of the stunning gardens by clicking here

STEP BACK IN TIME WITH A VISIT TO DENNIS SEVERS’ HOUSE

Like any capital city, London has a rich history that visitors love to engage with. Do you enjoy the theatricality of The Sherlock Holmes Museum in Baker Street? Don’t let the convincing mock-up fool you. That address on the iconic street didn’t actually exist when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle first penned the beloved adventures of The Great Detective.

Something for genuine, perhaps? If you want to feel as though you’re stepping back in time (without being sold quite so many books and DVDs), you may want to check out the unconventional time capsule that is Dennis Severs’ House in trendy Spitalfields.

This lovingly restored Huguenot house has ten rooms that are bedecked in period decorations and furnishings from different eras. This creates little snapshots of life in the area, from 1724 to 1914. These snapshots of still-life drama are made real with a tour given by silent guide.

Why is the guide silent, you might ask? Because the rooms don’t just contain period decor and curios; they actually come alive with the sounds, sights and even smells of period-accurate activities. This makes it an immersive and multisensory experience that feels much more authentic than your typical museum experience, and that silence serves to provoke your imagination to fill in the blanks!

VISIT SOME WHOLLY UNCONVENTIONAL MUSEUMS

We all know The British Museum, The National Gallery and the Natural History Museum. Yet while museums are a fantastic way to engage with the capital’s culture and history, we certainly don’t blame those who want to try something a little less conventional and delve into a history less documented.

And for those who want to expand their minds while experiencing something a little different, London has no shortage of unconventional, provocative and downright weird museums to enrich your visit.

Want to scare yourself rigid? You may find a visit to the infamous Clown’s Gallery museum far more terrifying than anything you’ll see at the London Dungeon. The fact that queues are far shorter, too, is certainly a bonus. Found in Cumberland Close in Wimbledon, this seemingly innocuous little gallery boasts a celebration of all things clownish within, displaying photos, props, costumes and wigs used by some of the country’s most famous clowns. You’ll have to plan your visit with precision, though; the gallery is only open on the first Friday of each month.

Particularly of interest are the museum’s collection of eggs. Yes, eggs! Practitioners of the art of clowning take their craft surprisingly seriously, and tradition dictates that no two performance can share the same makeup aesthetic. As such, to prevent plagiarism, performers would paint their unique look onto an egg (first real eggs and then ceramic ones) to establish individuality. This museum houses a collection of over 200 of these vintage eggs.

Alternatively, for lovers of the cheerfully gauche, see the capital’s largest collection of neon signs at God’s Own Junkyard. This salvage yard in Walthamstow has a truly prodigious collection of signage from throughout the ages including an extensive range of neon signs. The owner was the late, great veteran neon artist Chris Bracey, who designed neon signs for Soho sex dungeons and Hollywood blockbusters alike. His works can be seen in pictures as diverse as Byzantine, Eyes Wide Shut and the first Captain America movie, amongst other showcase platforms.

Or, do you want to see a museum that celebrates London’s very earliest history? Then check out the London Mithraeum Roman Temple to see antiquities that predate the birth of Christ. This temple, devoted to one of their gods, Mithras, was discovered in 1954 and offers a far more immersive and theatrical experience than your average museum.

The London Mithraeum is located beneath Bloomberg’s European headquarters, and the ancient temple has been restored to look just how it did when it was first excavated. A glitzy presentation using lighting design, audio recordings and dry ice makes this a theatrical and immersive experience that’s not to be missed. Entrance is free but it’s essential to book in advance.

THE BOTTOM LINE

The beauty of London is that it is so many things to many people, constantly evolving, shape shifting and reinventing itself. And while it certainly has its fair share of tourist traps, there is equally no shortage of places where adventurous tourists can go to avoid the crowds and experience the sights, sounds, tastes and smells of the capital that lie off the beaten track.

7 TIPS FOR CALMING RESTLESS THOUGHTS WHICH WON’T LET YOU SLEEP

We’re sure you’ve noticed that every person on the planet has a different energy. Some are peaceful at heart; measured, composed and chilled out to the core. Others, it has to be said, are a little more antsy. And sure, sometimes this latter energy can be a good thing, helping us maintain our attention to detail and ensuring that we’re always on the ball. Channel that restlessness right, and results can be rewarding.

However, if you feel too restless to sleep at night, it can have a whole host of negative impacts on your body and mind. We’ve all had racing thoughts once in a while which have prevented us dropping off to sleep quickly, but when it’s regularly affecting the quality of your zeds, action needs to be taken. With that in mind, here are 7 tips for calming restless thoughts which won’t let you sleep.

AIM FOR A ROUTINE

First of all, if you’re getting into bed late with regularity, straight from a stressful or stimulating activity, then settling down quickly and quietly is going to be tough.

Stop making things hard for yourself! One of the best ways to help the body and brain get in a state of restfulness efficiently is to make them associate certain times and places with the very act of getting restful.

Just like our body gets hungry when it knows its mealtime is just around the corner, so too can it naturally get tired when it knows it’s bedtime. That’s if we keep up some consistency, of course. One way to do that is to figure out what time you usually need to wake up at, then use a sleep clock to work backwards and help you find out what time you should be going to bed. Slowly but surely, your body clock will set itself accordingly.

WORK IT OUT

You don’t want to work out too close to bedtime (a racing heart can equal racing thoughts, after all) but it can be very helpful to do so a couple of hours before bed, to rid yourself of any pent up energy you’ve accumulated throughout the day. Indeed, a study by Harvard found that those who did regular evening exercise both fell asleep faster and slept more deeply. And that’s why you’re here right?

Yep, though it’s sometimes suggested that exercise at night hurts your ability to sleep, when timed correctly, the opposite is actually true. Working out at night has been shown to have a host of benefits such as improving your ability to burn fat, since your body isn’t trying to store as much energy to get through the day, what with the day almost being over.

TAKE TIME TO SLOW YOUR THOUGHTS

When you get in bed, does it feel like your mind starts listing off all of your worries, all of the things you need to do, and even some silly thing you blurted out years ago? Though slowing down your thoughts might sound impossible, with the help of meditation, it’s eminently plausible.

This all starts by nurturing the right environment in which to ‘take a moment’. Set up a meditation den which allows you dedicate time and space to your practice, and make a session part of your nightly ritual.

If you’re not sure how to meditate, then there are plenty of guided meditation and mindfulness apps out there which can help you get used to the process. Don’t worry if you don’t immediately get into it, or if at first sitting down and doing nothing feels a little frivolous or counterproductive; the art of practising mindfulness and focusing on one thought at a time only doesn’t come naturally to everyone. Persistence is key here; when you start noticing results, it’s a magical thing.

WRITE AWAY YOUR WORRIES

Another way to avoid having your worries bounce around your head all night long, with only the ceiling above a lent ear, is to put some distance and objectivity between you and those thoughts.

One of the best ways to do this is by keeping a journal. By writing down your thoughts, you’re in essence releasing them from the prison of your brain and freeing them onto the page. A little overly poetic, perhaps, but we’re writing and riffing here, aren’t we?

This externalizing of your issues can be really beneficial to calming those restless thoughts which won’t let you sleep. For one, you are less likely to keep fixating on them once they’re down on the paper.

What’s more, writing down your issues can actually give you some perspective, helping you look at your issues from a new angle, whether it’s as soon as those words are down on the page or when you’ve had some time away from them and can read them back the following morning. Suddenly yesterday’s obsession becomes today’s inconsequential. And that’s a refreshing feeling.

SET THE SCENE FOR BED-TIME

As a wiseperson should have definitely once said; ‘’a chaotic, crowded room doesn’t for a sound sleep make’’. Hmm, did that come out right?

Anyway, it’s essential for a distraction free sleep that you’re creating as relaxed an environment as possible before you head to bed. One of the most common ways that people do this is with aromatherapy, using scents such as lavender oil, chamomile oil, and ylang-ylang to evoke a peaceful space.

You should also be ritualistic about how you take the time to prepare yourself and the bedroom for sleep. The simple act of ‘getting ready’ for sleep can give your body the time and prompts it needs to switch gears, which means it’s more likely to start slowing down as soon as your head hits the pillow. Perhaps fold your clothes neatly for the following day, or switch the lights in your living room to ‘night time’ mode every evening at the same time. Your brain will respond to these cues favourably and most crucially, with a more restful mindset.

AVOID USING THE BEDROOM FOR OTHER THINGS

One tip that’s worth following; regardless of whether you’re having trouble sleeping or not, is to make sure that you’re only using the bedroom for its intended purposes: sleep and intimacy. Yep, you know what we mean by the latter – nudge nudge, wink wink – but it’s the former which we’re devoting this article to, so we’ll park that smutty talk for now.

Anyway, our mind creates associations between spaces and the activities we use those spaces for. As such, if you use your bedroom as your home office or as your main workout space, then you’re in danger of putting up mental barriers to it being your sleep space instead. Being mentally in-gear to get to work or to workout is not conducive to a good night’s sleep, to put it mildly.

DON’T BATHE YOUR EYES IN BLUE LIGHT

We’re sure you’ve heard this one before. We’re also sure it’s something you (and all of us) find surprisingly hard to follow. Yep, the need to avoid exposing your eyes to blue light before you go to bed is a well-documented one. This light, which is produced by the digital displays of monitors, smartphones, and similar devices, has been shown to make it harder to get to sleep in a variety of studies.

This particular kind of light is better than most at keeping your brain active and alert, to the point that it can add 20-30 minutes of waking time to your night before you fall asleep. As such, you should aim to avoid blue light for at least 30 minutes before you go to bed. Easier said than done, we know, but it’s a change well worth implementing.

THE BOTTOM LINE

By bearing the tips above in mind, firstly; we pray your mind isn’t racing with new ideas. That would rather defeat the point of the article. Secondly, and more seriously, we hope that the next time you lay your head down to rest, it’s a little more tranquil in there.

6 SIMPLE HACKS TO SAVE MONEY EACH MONTH

Ideal for those seeking solutions to overspending.

For better or for worse, saving money and running a manageable budget is one of the main markers of adulthood and an indicator of a stable, sensible outlook. Should you prioritise a life of reassuring rhythm and routine, then getting a handle on your finances is a must.

However, as additional challenges and pressures develop throughout this year, keeping a stable budget is perhaps more pressing than ever.

Though saving money on a large scale isn’t always easy, with a few small scale changes, it’s certainly possible. Every little helps, as they say, and with that in mind, here are 6 simple hacks to save money each month, IDEAL for those seeking solutions to overspending.

USE CASH

One of the best and simplest ways that you can curtail spending and save some money is to use cash only. Yep, we realise that in modern times, contactless is king, but going old school can actually be really beneficial to budgeting.

The little things we buy every day can be difficult to keep track of when you’re simply waving plastic at them, and these can add up over time. We’ve all been there; before you know it, your bank account is drained thanks to instinctive purchases of chewing gum, hair ties and latte, and you’re not even sure how it happened.

We exaggerate, of course;  no one ever bought a house by cutting back on the avocado on toast. But, the easiest way to keep track of your spending and keep it under control is to keep your credit card stashed and use cash only. That way, you physically see every pound you part with.

NEGOTIATE NEW RATES

All too often we pay our utility and other bills as they come in without a second thought, thinking that these rates are fixed and negotiable. However, there is often a degree of wiggle room when it comes to the rates your provider offers you; they want to keep you loyal, after all, and will often shave a few pounds off your bill if you keep on their case.

Indeed, you’d be surprised at the results you can get if you pick up the phone and ask your provider to review their rates as a gesture to reward you for your loyalty. If they won’t shift, shop around and see if any of their competitors are offering a better deal. A bit of short term energy expended can pay off handsomely in the long run.

REVIEW YOUR TRANSPORT COSTS

One of the biggest costs in a budget tends to be transport, whether that’s the daily commute or regular refills of the petrol in your car. By reviewing your expenditure in this area and making some cost-cutting changes, you may find some significant savings.

Petrol and other expenses associated with running a car, in particular, are costly and accumulative. Consider whether you can cut back on your car usage and replace this with public transport. If public transport isn’t feasible, investigate carpooling. You can even ask your employer if they will allow you to work remotely all or some of the time – not only will this cut commuting costs, but it will also reduce lunchtime expenses and more.

AUDIT YOUR SHOPPING BILL

Food is an essential expense, but are you spending more than you need to be at the supermarket?

Start by taking out your last supermarket receipt and doing a critical audit; look at the items that are costing you the most, then consider if these are really essential or if cheaper replacements could be made. This doesn’t need to mean you should cut back on fruit and vegetables, or things that bring you joy, but rather, whether you’re getting the best deal compared to other supermarkets and if the brand you’re loyal to really is giving you value for money.

When it comes grocery bills, our friends at Daily Prosper tell us that an easy way to save money on groceries is to plan your meals each week and to check what you already have in your fridge and cabinets before you go shopping. Indeed “Why would you want to buy more of something you already have?” the site dedicated to helping people prosper posits”.

Also critically assess your food wastage: this is not only a waste of food but also money. If you find yourself regularly tossing spoiled food, you are buying too much and could save greatly by only buying what you need.

FIND A GREAT PHONE CONTRACT

In general, contract phones are more expensive than buying a phone outright. However, if you search around and compare the options, you can find great deals on 12, 24 or 36 monthly contracts, as well as deals on your preferred models, such as Apple phone plans or a discount on the latest Samsung if you enter into a lengthier commitment.

Sometimes, phone manufacturers and retailers will offer a special deal on new phones that they are seeking to promote in order to gather reviews that will facilitate more sales. Do your research to identify the best deals as they emerge. Be sure to do your calculations and check how much you will end up paying for the phone over the life of the contract, including all fees and charges, compared to buying a phone outright, but if the sums add up, there are serious savings to be made here.

PAY DOWN YOUR DEBTS

If you’re trying to save up for something, paying off your credit card or personal loan may not feel like your top priority. In fact, it’s an aspect of your outgoings usually confined to the footer. However, paying down your debts is one of the best ways to save money and could substantially contribute to your bank balance in the long term. Paying interest on loans and credit cards is a simple waste of money, and the faster you pay off your debts, the less interest you pay. This will also help you to establish a great credit rating, all of which contributes to a more stable, sensible state of finances for many years to come.

7 TIPS FOR BUILDING YOUR OWN TINY WHEELED HOUSE

Your own what? Yep, the Tiny House Movement is perhaps the cutest thing you’ve never heard of. Promoting the double-pronged interests of architectural intrigue and the joys of minimalising, some urban dwellers have embraced so-called ‘tiny houses’ as a way of decluttering, living more slowly and simply, and saving a fair bit of money, too.

Sign us up! We could all do with a good personal declutter from time to time, and this takes things to the next level. To really enhance that sense of freedom and shedding of life’s baggage, we’re particularly excited about the wheeled version, allowing you to take to the open road and explore, in compact, cosy form. The best part? You can actually build one yourself! With that in mind, here 7 tips for building your own tiny wheeled house.

ENSURE THE TINY HOUSE MOVEMENT IS RIGHT FOR YOU

While we could extol all the benefits of a tiny house (less clutter, potential lower carbon footprint, more savings), before you decide to build one, make sure this type of living is right for you.

While the tiny house movement can be a way to avoid mortgage debt and landlord enrichment, bear in mind that tiny houses usually depreciate in value and are hard to sell on. Also, as they are not attached to any land; as such, many owners report a sense of groundlessness, and tiny houses can be constant reminder of a fragile housing state. Moreover, tiny houses shouldn’t be the governments answer to the housing crisis. Instead, they should be a lifestyle choice, so make sure it’s the right choice for you.

USE PREFAB HOUSES FOR EASE OF ASSEMBLY AND MAINTENANCE

When you start building your tiny house, it is vital that you use the right materials. If you are a newbie at carpentry, it is usually a good idea to purchase a prefabricated house, where are usually made of a used shipping container that is recycled into small size homes. Some DIY tiny home kits are even available to buy on Amazon.

Container house manufacturers mass-produce prefab houses for a very affordable price, with houses like this simple to assemble and maintain. Generally speaking, if you’re building a tiny house for the first time, it’s advisable to just buy a prefabricated one that saves you both time and effort in the long run.

INSULATE YOUR TINY HOUSE PROPERLY

Once you’re finished setting up your prefab tiny house it is important that you insulate it properly. You’re going to be on the move, and the further afield you find yourself, the more temperatures and conditions may fluctuate. If your tiny house isn’t  properly insulated, your travel experience might be uncomfortable.

When it comes to tiny houses, it is best to use spray foam insulation. Spray foam insulation provides greater resistance from mould or mildew because it helps prevent moisture from getting into the walls. It also has excellent cooling and heating benefits. This option also adds more density and sturdiness to your walls.

INSTALL PLUMBING

You’re going to need a working bathroom installed in your wheeled tiny house. Due to the portable nature and size of a tiny house, it can be a bit difficult to install a toilet in the bathroom. But it is doable, and also, essential.

Just make sure that you install a removable septic tank so you can easily dispose of your waste. You should also install an effective water tank system. Remember that there may be days where you will have to travel without a steady water source so your water tank system is key to your comfort and survival on the road.

CHOOSE A SUSTAINABLE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Electricity is a necessity if you own a tiny house and want to keep the lights on. Though we’d love to go seriously old school and do things by candlelight, it’s simply not safe or practical to do so full time. Instead, you should make sure your electrical system is installed properly; have a professional install your wiring and outlets to avoid electrical accidents.

When it comes to selecting a power source, it all really depends on your budget. If you are aiming for a more simplistic design, then a portable battery is a good option. That said, you’ll need to replace it on a regular basis, which can get a bit tedious.

Should you wish to have a more sustainable electrical source, you could invest in a small generator, or better yet solar panels. That way you can constantly replenish your energy source.

CHOOSE A SUITABLE WHEELED PLATFORM

Aside from your tiny house, it is also important that you pay attention to your wheeled platform. This platform is where you will place the tiny house and as such, it needs to be sturdy. Remember that this wheeled platform will support at least half a ton of wood and steel for miles on end. It is also meant to handle the weight without crumbling and prevent the wheels from breaking down.

The platform should also have suitable breaks and a reinforced frame.

MAKE SURE YOUR CAR IS CAPABLE OF TOWING YOUR TINY HOUSE

Aside from your wheeled platform, it is also important that your car is capable of towing your tiny house’s weight. What, you thought your tiny house was going to be rolling down a hill of its volition? Nope, it’s going to need some assistance to keep in motion. Your car should be equipped with a bumper pull that can handle the vast weight and the constant strain of being pulled. As an alternative, consider mini digger hire, which will have ample energy and pulling power for your tiny house.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Building your very own wheeled tiny house may be a very work-intensive project, but it is all worth it in the end. If you hire someone else to build your tiny house for you or buy a prefab house, ensure you do your research. Unfortunately, construction within the tiny house movement is unregulated, leaving owners at risk to bad work and companies going out of business.

Warnings aside, channel that free-wheelin’ energy of the open road, and the freedom which a minimalist living space brings, and get ready for an adventure!

5 OF THE BEST BEACHES IN ZAKYNTHOS, GREECE

The Greek island of Zakynthos, sitting off the country’s south west coast, is one of the jewels in the crown of the azure Ionian sea. Often referred to as Zante for short, here you’ll find holidays to suit everyone, from the hedonistic, carefree vibes of Laganas to the family friendly Tsilivi and beyond.

Though the verdant, lush landscapes inland are certainly attractive, and the Byzantine museum and Venetian Castle fascinating, Zante is most famous for its beaches. And with good reason; they’re as varied and gorgeous as you’ll find anywhere on the planet.

We’ve undertaken the inevitable task of reclining on golden sands the length and breadth of the island in order to narrow it down to just five, to suit all tastes and interests. Whether you’re sailing in Greece and approaching by sea, or simply strolling up in your sandals with the sand between your toes, here are 5 of best beaches in Zakynthos, Greece.

LAGANAS

We had to start here, though you may not wish to. Because Laganas is the most populated, lively beach resort on Zante, for better or worse, and is a major draw for visitors keen on drinking, dancing and debauchery.

Laganas Beach itself, in the south of Zante, looks out on the shallow and calm waters of Laganas Bay, but that’s where the tranquillity ends. It’s the longest beach on the island, stretching to 9km, and backing onto the majority of it are bars and tavernas selling raki and kebabs to the masses until late, and if that’s your thing, it’s a great focal point for your holiday.

If you’re in the area and seeking something more peaceful, nearby Kalamaki Beach is just a 5 minute drive away, and is a protected breeding ground for rare, threatened Loggerhead Caretta-Caretta sea turtles. This means that part of the beach is closed to allow for nesting and egg laying, but the rest is as serene as it comes; there’s no watersports or other activity allowed in the sea here to protect the turtles.

Just south of Laganas (around a half hour walk) is Agios Sostis village. Here, you’ll find a gorgeous, rickety wooden footbridge which takes you across to Cameo island, a pine covered paradise with a couple of bars and a beach. Bliss!

NAVAGIO (SHIPWRECK BEACH)

Navagio Beach (sometimes referred to as Shipwreck Beach or Smuggler’s Cove) is perhaps the biggest draw for tourists visiting Zante. Only reachable by boat, this tiny cove and pebble beach on the island’s north west attracts visitors in their droves each year, here to view the coaster MV Panagiotis, which ran aground in 1980, possibly carrying smuggled goods and contraband, hence the nickname. The wreck itself still sits on the beach, rusted but amazingly preserved, and fascinating to see up close and personal.

The backdrop of turquoise, clear waters and a cliff above certainly frame the shipwreck beautifully, and there are several tour companies running day trips here. It’s also worth viewing Navagio Beach and the wreck of MV Panagiotis from above; you can reach the vantage point at the top of that sheer set of cliffs by car, motorbike or quad bike. It’s around a 45 minute drive from Tsilivi.

VASILIKOS

Rather than being one beach (though we’ll come to our favourite in a minute) Vasilikos is a collection of five villages with adjacent beaches on Zante’s south eastern peninsula, around 10km from Zakynthos City. Here, you’ll find peace and tranquillity abundant, with mountains, forests and olive groves overlooking the beaches meaning there’s less raucous action behind than the likes of Laganas would have you accustomed to. That’s not to say it’s deserted; there’s plenty of quality accommodation options in Zakynthos, and Vasilikos is no exception.

The main beaches here are Porto Kaminia, Saint Nicholas and Gerakas, and all three are lovely, but our favourite here is the latter…

GERAKAS

18km south of the capital, Gerakas beach is one of Zante’s most attractive, with an undisturbed, unspoilt vibe made so because it’s part of the Zakynthos Marine Park, which protects the Caretta-Caretta turtle’s breeding and nesting. From a half hour prior to sunset to a half hour after sunrise, tourists are forbidden from entering the area. During the permitted hours, however, this is one serene spot, with golden sand, scattered rock formations and a large cove with crystal clear water and great swimming opportunities.

MAKRIS GIALOS

Also close to Zante’s main town is Makris Gialos Beach, which has a more traditional continental beach vibe, with chairs and umbrellas for rent, and food vendors selling fresh fruit juices and barbequed meats and fish, with water sports permitted and popular here. Sometimes, that’s all you need, right?

If you’re hungry for a proper sit down meal, several tavernas line the beach. Our pick of the bunch? It has to be Pinarinos, which has a gorgeous terrace overlooking the beach and sea. Specialities include swordfish and rabbit in lemon sauce, but the savvy order from the specials; whatever’s fresh and from the sea, grilled, sounds like heaven to us.

4 INTERIOR DESIGN IDEAS FOR A RETRO-INSPIRED SITTING ROOM

Ideal for the country’s vintage lovers looking to channel an old school aesthetic.

Retro interior design can mean different things to different people. Broadly speaking, it covers various styles from the 1950s onwards, but really, such a term is relative. As the saying goes ‘old school is in the eyes of the beholder’. Perhaps that’s not quite right, but you get what we mean, right?

It’s in the sitting room (a retro term in itself, perhaps) that we’re focusing our attention today, as this is the part of the house which most benefits from that cosy comfort of the past. On the IDEAL sofa, we may have binge-watched the whole series of Mad Men to bring you this article.

With that in mind, if you’re looking for retro-inspired design ideas, you’ve come to the right place. So, fix yourself an old-fashioned, perhaps light a cigar, and read these 4 interior design ideas for a retro-inspired living room, IDEAL for the country’s vintage lovers looking to channel an old school aesthetic.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE SEATING

Since you spend most of your time sitting in your sitting room (the clue’s in the title, hey?), you’ll need some carefully curated pieces here to really capture that retro vibe.

Let’s start with the classic British Chesterfield sofas and Chesterfield Armchairs which bless retro living rooms the world over; the scene of many deals done, trysts begun and chief execs sleeping off their hangovers, we’d wager. In all seriousness, they’re a fantastic focal point for any room channelling that vintage aesthetic. And the best thing? Since Chesterfield sofas are covered in leather, any spillages from that whisky on the rocks you’ve been sipping can be easily wiped away.

If you’re not a fan of Chesterfields, consider an American vintage club chair, perhaps in burgundy. That, or a mid Century daybed in a burnt orange tweed fabric; it wouldn’t be a retro living room without a healthy dose of burnt orange somewhere, now would it?

We’re also huge fans of telephone benches – ideal for adding some vintage flair to your sitting room.  Also known as gossip benches, these are small benches or chairs with a table attached to the side, where people used to place their phones in the days of cords. Though such a device is now redundant, its associated furniture is still very much in fashion.

SOMEWHERE TO PUT YOUR OLD FASHIONED

No retro-inspired living room would be complete without a mid-century sideboard or a modernist console for those louche, languid vibes they seem to evoke. Add some crystal glasses, a whisky decanter and the sound of clinking ice cubes and you have yourself that old school aesthetic so perfectly suited to retro, laid back living.

Of course, on the sideboard you need your retro record player or better still, a gramophone; how else are you going to sing along to “Zou Bisou Bisou’’ while you drink your old fashioned

Go a step further and create a proper at-home bar, complete with red bar stools and dark wood panelling. Add a soda stream – a retro item making a comeback – so you can make your own carbonated cocktails and look pretty cool doing so.

THE ACCESSORIES

A vintage, retro-inspired sitting room is only as good as its accessories, we think. Sure, you can evoke a certain sense of old school with sofas and music, but it’s the small touches and finer details which help create a cohesive whole.

First, let’s think about what’s under your feet. For your retro-inspired living room floor, it just has to be adorned with a shag carpet; groovy, baby. And don’t forget to add some foliage. We think a cheese plant has that sense of the old school aesthetic about it, evocative of a certain, unbridled yet stylish era we’re coveting here. For lighting, it has to be an Anglepoise or Brass Banker lamp, which would stand so succinctly on that console you’ve just introduced.

For more inspiration on the smaller flourishes, check out the collection of retro items from Vintage Furniture UK.

GROOVY COLOURS & PATTERNS

Going retro doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go overboard with the crazy colours and even crazier patterns. But, if you’re after a vintage theme then it wouldn’t be right not to channel the retro colour palette, which favours mustard, burnt orange and burgundy in particular.

A splash of Seventies patterned wallpaper, showing geometric prints or something funky and floral – the bolder the better – ideal. If you’re going all out and never want to return to the modern era, consider a faux wood wallpaper ceiling. Perhaps throw in some psychedelic patterned cushions and you’re done!

5 STEPS IN CHOOSING THE IDEAL KITCHEN SUPPLIER FOR YOUR NEXT RENOVATION

There’s an old French proverb which suggests that ‘’it is in an old kitchen that the best food is made’’. Whilst those chaps across the channel certainly know a thing or two about cooking, we’re going to have to politely disagree here. Because if the kitchen is the heart of the home, then one which hasn’t been updated in years is surely at risk of cardiac arrest?

Indeed, if you’re planning a kitchen renovation, we’re first here to reassure you; at the culmination of that lengthy process – of redesigning the entire room, visualising what you want in it, and finalising the new installations – is some seriously nourishing cooking and even more quality time spent with family and friends.

But firstly, before the first shepherd’s pie is baked, you have to herd some sheep. If you’re looking to renovate your kitchen, you’re going to need to find a trustworthy supplier for providing reliable material according to your preferences, within your budget. Remember that your ideas for renovation might be unique, and you might have to filter through a good number of reputed kitchen suppliers before finding one that suits your needs.

It’s a process, sure, but one which can be completed diligently and efficiently if you just follow these 5 steps in choosing the IDEAL kitchen supplier for your next renovation.

SHORTLIST KITCHEN SUPPLY COMPANIES

As anyone who has strolled a high street peering into showrooms longingly at the perfect kitchen will attest, there are just so many suppliers for kitchen renovations on the market. Initially, then you’ll have to undertake some cursory research about all the suppliers in your area to narrow things down to a shortlist.

Ask some searching questions; are they only about supply, or do they offer installation services as well? Do they assemble your cabinets, and will they provide benchtops? Can items be personalised, or does the entire kitchen come as it is? Once you’re sure of all of this information, you can shortlist a few companies and get in touch with them.

FIND OUT HOW THE SUPPLIER OPERATES

The mode of operation of a kitchen supplier can make a lot of difference to their output. While some have their manufacturing and selling facilities all under one roof, others might source their materials elsewhere. While some might have showrooms, others might just be supplying from warehouses and workstations.

If you prefer a visit to the showroom before you select a kitchen design and its contents, you might want suppliers who can showcase their products to you first hand. This will allow you get a measure of the kitchen’s space and feel, to touch the surfaces, smell the taps (what, you don’t smell the taps?) and generally picture yourself in your new kitchen, flipping pancakes wearing nothing but a chef’s hat (what, you don’t….? okay, we’ll stop now).

Similarly, if you want your supplies to arrive within a short time, you might want to go with local kitchen product supply companies that guarantee minimal delays.

DETERMINE IF THE SUPPLIERS OFFER ENOUGH OPTIONS

Since a kitchen renovation means a lot of investment and contentment is often tied to the kitchen implicitly, you should be sure about getting exactly what you want. Before you finalise your renovation supplier, you must scrutinise product catalogues with the same discerning eye as Gordon Ramsay appraising a trial chef’s omelette technique. Ideally, a renovation company should be offering multiple options for materials that are to be used in fixtures, countertops, and cabinets in every budget range. It would be best if you didn’t limit your choices between a couple of alternatives while remodelling your kitchen.

Similarly, the right kitchen supplier will offer you a variety of colour options. Colours have a lot of say in how the renovated kitchen looks and feels (and the stains it shows up!). Whether you want your kitchen to look contemporary or royal, luxurious or quirky, your choice of colours is the key.

GET A FEW QUOTES FOR COMPARISON

Once you know a few kitchen renovation suppliers that can provide exactly what you need, it’s time to start finding out who offers the best deal. So, next up, you might want to get a few quotes from them. And when we say ‘might’, we mean will. Certainly. Definitely. Without question, want to.

Use those quotes to draw comparisons and narrow down your list of suppliers. If a kitchen supplier is reluctant to provide those all important quotes, bin them in that funky, revolving trash can you’re coveting for your new space.

You might want to look into how many years of warranty the suppliers offer on their products, too. This is an area of the house where things go wrong and equipment inevitably breaks; a warranty is incredibly useful here.

CHECK FOR CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Testimonials from previous customers are the most reliable way to discover the real quality of products and services offered by a provider. Compare reviews for professionalism, customer satisfaction, transparency, timely delivery, and quality of installations on tradesperson validation and review websites, such as Trustpilot, Check A Trade, and dedicated site Kitchen Compare, which updates prices every day and is an independent body. Ultimately, select the kitchen installation suppliers who you think have done well with their earlier projects and provided exceptional customer services later on.

The Chinese love to warn; ‘if you want dinner, don’t insult the cook’. We think this maxim can be applied to your kitchen space. So, if you want the IDEAL kitchen, don’t neglect the research process.

7 OF OUR FAVOURITE AT HOME BEAUTY HACKS

Ideal for those looking for some nifty tips and tricks when self pampering.

You might have heard that these are unprecedented times. And with beauty salons and hairdressers only just opened, and dates and dalliances infrequent, we’re not afraid to admit that our beauty regime has suffered.

With few folks eager to immediately rush out onto the high street for a makeover or treatment, more and more people are looking for handy hacks that will let them tackle everyday beauty tasks from the comfort of their own home and for little money. We’ve teamed up with Sally Beauty reviews, who offer extensive reviews and ratings on cosmetics products, to bring you these; here are 7 of our favourite at home beauty hacks, IDEAL for those looking for some nifty tips and tricks when self pampering.

DYE ROOTS USING A TOOTHBRUSH

Root regrowth is the bane of many people’s lives, and with salon appointment slots hard to come by right now, not to mention expensive, people are looking for new ways to colour their own hair from home. Indeed, plenty of women are trying their hand at touching up their greys themselves and we have a tip that makes the whole process so much simpler – use a toothbrush.

Yep, you heard us right; a toothbrush. Not only will you avoid getting dye in unwanted places, but you can also brush it right into your hairline to achieve a natural-looking blend.

You simply need to mix your dye as prescribed on the box, section off your hair and apply with a toothbrush to all of your roots. If you then want to apply the rest of the dye through the length of your hair, you can. Simply do so roughly 10 minutes before washing everything out. This will help you to avoid ‘hot roots’ that look a different shade to the rest of your hair.

USE MASCARA AS A MAKESHIFT EYELINER

If you suddenly find that you’ve run out of eyeliner, don’t panic – simply use your mascara as a makeshift liner.

Start by applying your mascara high into your lash line, giving you definition instantly. For added drama, or if you are a winged liner aficionado, grab a liner brush and dip the tip into your mascara before using it like a liquid liner. Because it’s an eye product already, you can rest easy that you won’t cause yourself any damage with this mascara hack.

CONDITIONER IS A GREAT SHAVING CREAM

Don’t waste money on expensive shave creams and gels when something that’s already sitting in your shower can give you a superior finish.

Yep, standard hair conditioner is the perfect substitute for costly creams that never seem to last as long as you’d hope. It’s also incredibly simple to use. Just coat your legs and/or underarms with a thin layer of conditioner, leave for a few seconds to soften up the hair, and then shave as you would normally. The result is a new level of smoothness that seems to give you longer between shaves as well.

APPLY LIP BALM TO SHAVING CUTS

Few things are more annoying than cutting yourself while shaving your legs. The smallest cuts always seem to bleed the most (rather than the first, the deepest, we think) and if you nick your ankle? That’s seriously painful. Fortunately, we’ve discovered an easy, effective way to stop the blood flowing and to speed up healing, too.

So, next time you catch yourself while shaving, reach for your favourite lip balm. Rub it on your cut and the waxy texture will seal the wound. A word of warning; avoid anything mint flavoured as the menthol will sting.

LIPSTICK WORKS AS A CHEEK TINT

A money and space-saving hack all rolled into one here; try using your favourite lipstick as a cheek tint for a more tonally cohesive look that won’t ask you to carry 20+ different pieces of make-up in your bag at all times.

If you like a bold blush, dab straight from the tube using your fingertips, but for a sheer and summery vibe, mix it with a little lip balm or petroleum jelly on the back of your hand before dotting onto the apples of your cheeks. Hey, presto! Perfectly tinted cheeks.

TAME THOSE UNRULY EYEBROWS

Ever wondered how to tame unruly eyebrows and get that natural-but-neat look which is just so in fashion right now? Well, here’s the answer.

After applying your mascara, wipe your wand almost entirely clean with a make-up wipe, then gently comb it through your brows. Not only will you neaten them up, but a little trace of pigment will add depth and tone as well as staying power, too. It’s basically like getting HD brows, but with none of the pain or expense.

While we’re on the subject, check our article on the 7 beginner’s steps to the IDEAL eyebrows for an in depth look at shedding those caterpillars.

USE HAIR STRAIGHTENERS FOR CURLING

Perfecting easy waves might seem impossible, but if you have a set of hair straighteners, you’re halfway there already.

Straighteners, for curling, you say? It sounds odd – counter intuitive, even – but if you put your hair in a low ponytail, then twist it and run your straighteners along the full length, when you take out your hair tie you’ll have loose waves that look salon perfect.

4 LUXURY HOLIDAY IDEAS IN ALPES-MARITIMES, SOUTHERN FRANCE, FOR SUMMER

Ideal for those wanting to experience the French luxe-life without the crowds.

According to the most recent government advice on international travel, ‘’from 4 July, France is exempt from the FCO advice against all non-essential international travel. This is based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks’’. Yep, the lockdown drawbridge has been lifted and a travel corridor erected across the channel. As such, France is open for business for the Great British Summer holiday, and we couldn’t be happier.

Most of the country seems to agree, with trips to France being hastily arranged across the UK as we speak. And therein lies the problem; if you’re to get far from the madding crowd and off the beaten track this summer, you’re going to have to go a little further afield than Calais, Paris et al.

Today, then, we’re heading to Southern France, and more specifically, the Alpes-Maritimes region, to several places which are both exclusive and refreshingly free from the crowds. Here are 4 luxury holiday ideas in Alpes-Maritime, Southern France, for summer, IDEAL for those wanting the experience the French luxe-life without the crowds.

MENTON

Though we’re keen to start with a joke about giving an ‘honourable Menton’, this place deserves so much more than being an afterthought on our list. Because Menton, on the French Riviera in South-East France and bordering Italy within walking distance, has so much going for it.

Let’s start with the food scene. Inspired by the area’s unique microclimate (reportedly 3°C warmer than the rest of France) and the resultant, abundant fresh produce that brings, as well as its proximity to Italy and the Mediterranean, the cuisine here has a personality all of its own; largely seafood and vegetable led, light-as-you-like and worth the trip alone to sample.

The jewel in Menton’s crown is Mirazur, a 3 Michelin-starred restaurant run by Argentinian chef Mauro Colagreco, which was last year named as the world’s best in the World’s 50 Best Restaurant List. It’s delicious and shows off the region’s luxury product beautifully. It’s going to cost you though; the tasting menu is around £300 per head.

If that’s a little out of your price range or you simply fancy something more traditional, then a meal on the terrace of Le Bistrot de Jardins, which has been serving fresh, fantastic Mediterranean food for forty years and counting, is definitely worth your time.

Lemons are ubiquitous in Menton; head to one of the town’s markets or boutique shops to try Calissons, an almond biscuit often garnished with candied lemon, and finish with a limoncello, as popular on this side of the border as further up the road in Italy. At Au Pays De Citron, on Rue Saint-Michel, they sell some of the finest limoncellos in the world.

If your gastronomic side lays dormant, firstly, how have you got this far south without getting bored? Secondly, Menton’s Jean Cocteau Museum, housed in an ancient fort, will see you right. Housing an extensive collection of the French artist’s work, by way of American businessman Séverin Wunderman’s collection, the architecture alone is worth the visit.

ÈZE

20km south of Menton sits one of the most attractive places in the whole Alpes-Maritime region. Èze is a medieval, hilltop village with incredible sea views and lush, tropical gardens. Described as the ‘eagle’s nest’ due to its perch more than 400 metres above sea level, these panoramic views of the Med and French Riviera below need to be seen to be believed. Simply stunning; just watch that vertigo!

Even if you’re not staying the night here, it’s well worth the drive just to take in the world famous vistas. But really, this is a place which deserves to be lingered over; sunset and sunrise are two very different spectacles, after all. For fully blown luxury, rent a chateau in the area and really take your time over this most beautiful part of the world.

Within the village of Èze itself, there’s a laid back vibe with plenty to see and do. The Chapelle de la Sainte Croix, built in the 14th century, is the commune’s oldest building and boasts yet more spectacular views. Speaking of which (are you sensing a theme here?), to truly appreciate the splendour from on high, do include Le Jardin Exotique d’Eze in your itinerary. This garden, replete with cacti, arguably boasts the best views in the whole region.

If you’re seeking a meal worthy of its setting, then La Chèvre d’Or is a 2 Michelin starred restaurant with a terrace, those views, and light, incredibly delicious cuisine. It sits on Rue Du Barri, in the heart of Eze.

SAINT-JEAN CAP-FERRAT

Next, we’re heading to Saint-Jean Cap-Ferrat, a cute commune sitting on a gorgeous peninsula of the same name. Full of lush vegetation and pristine beaches, with a warm climate and views out to the Mediterranean, many consider Saint-Jean Cap-Ferrat as the pearl of Southern France. We’re not going to argue with them; that would disrupt the tranquillity of the place, and we’d be fighting a losing battle. It’s that lovely.

The beaches are the star attraction here, with Plage de Paloma considered the finest. Opening up onto the bay of Beaulieu-sur-Mer, it’s stunning. Since it faces east, this is the ideal spot for some morning sun. If you’re chasing rays, then head next to Plage de Passable, on the opposite side of the peninsula and facing west, for afternoon bathing and tanning.

Being such an illustrious setting, there are several restaurants on the peninsula with breathtaking vistas and luxurious food to match. The pick of the bunch is Le Cap, with a terrace offering panoramic views of the French Riveria and a light, modern seafood led menu. Heaven!

And since you’re here for luxury, there are some stunning luxury french villas, both modern and turn of the century properties to choose from for special stay right on the waterfront.

ANTIBES

An attractive hour’s drive south and past Nice from Saint-Jean Cap-Ferrat and you’ll arrive at Antibes. Visitors to this gorgeous coastal city should focus their attention on Antibes’ old town, which is an attractive tangle of cobbled streets, boutique shops and markets, and squares complete with continental coffee sipping and people watching. Heaven!

Before heading into the old town proper, though, first admire the ramparts which surround the town from the vantage point of one of the city’s urban beaches. Plage de Gravette is the closest, sitting just below the medieval centre. Or, a little further out is Plage du Plonteil, which boasts breathtaking views of both the old town’s walls and the Alps further afield. Yep, though you might be relaxing on a beach, skiing in the South of France is never far from reach!

A trip to Antibes is all about shopping, so after your recline on the beach, it’s time to hit the old town. To get a feel for the ebb and flow of this lovely town, make for Marché Provençal, open from sunrise until early afternoon each day in the high season, from June to September, with Mondays closed the rest of the year. Here you’ll find local charcuterie, cheese and fresh fruit and vegetables, all of which are reliably high quality, and plenty of souvenirs, trinkets and clothes to buy, too.

After a pit stop at the Antibes’ main square, Place de Gaulle, for a pastry, coffee or perhaps even a glass of rose (so popular in these parts), it’s time for a wander. Antibes old town is the perfect place to wander and get lost when shopping; you’ll chance upon some unique, one-of-a-kind finds, that we can guarantee!

4 INDUSTRY APPROVED CREATIVE KITCHEN LIGHTING IDEAS

Ideal for those looking to illuminate the most important room in the house.

In the wise words of director Alfred Hitchcock, ”happiness is a small house with a big kitchen’’. And if anyone knew a thing or two about shedding the right kind of light on a subject, it was him.

And with that neat little intro dispensed with, let’s get to it. The kitchen is, without doubt, the beating heart of the home and probably the most commonly used area once our eyes are open and spirits alert. It’s where you start your day with that reviving cup of Joe, and where you take (and simmer) stock at the end of it; a place to come together with family and friends and luxuriate in the very essence of life.

When it comes to lighting your kitchen, then, you should take things seriously. No one wants to spend these meaningful moments in poorly lit doom and gloom. Instead, proper lighting in your kitchen should be a priority, whether you’re taking on a big renovation project or simply looking to finesse a few details. With that in mind, here are 4 industry approved creative kitchen lighting ideas, IDEAL for those looking to illuminate the most important room in the house.

UNDER-CABINET LIGHTING

The recent trend for LED tape lighting is a very welcome one indeed. It just seems to evoke that cosy, romantic atmosphere so suited to lingering evening meals and glances over the dinner table.

Should you be planning a romantic anniversary meal, or simply want an intimate occasion with friends and good conversation, LED tape lighting is suggestive of the kind of secret outdoor spot which Londoners speak of in hushed, reverent tones. All except it’s indoors and safe from the elements. Aside from the main lighting in the kitchen, you can nurture a more intimate ambience all round, which can be created via non-intense, slightly dimmed lighting; led kitchen lighting under cabinet, in particular, could help with that.

PENDANT LIGHTS

It’s a real classic in the lamp section of the lighting market for good reason; pendant lighting is an excellent solution to unwanted shadow and gloomier corners, make no mistake. Aside from the fact that it’s a stylish choice, especially in industrial kitchens with high ceilings which create the perfect frame for such lamps to be presented in all their glory, it can also be deployed to illuminate certain tasks and areas in the heart of the home.

Indeed, if you have a kitchen island, consider placing three equal pendant lights above it. They should hang around 3 or 4 feet above the island. If you have a large kitchen, make such lighting is enough to illuminate the whole area.

Another advantage of pendant lights is this; when they’re used for general lighting in the room, these kitchen lighting fixtures are designed to throw a portion of the room’s light up to the ceiling. As the light spreads across the ceiling and reflects back down, it creates a gentle yet all encompassing effect.

MIX AND MATCH

Who said you need to have exactly the same lighting style throughout your kitchen, all synergised and matching? Certainly not us. Instead, we value a sense of organised chaos, with a mix’n’match affair bringing visual intrigue and an aptitude at that task lighting we were previously extolling.

There are endless different combinations on the market that you can mix and match the way you like. Do exercise a degree of caution; if you buy several totally different lamps, you’re going to make your kitchen look kitschy. Fine, if that’s the look you’re going for, but perhaps not always the cleanest route to effortless workflow and that sense of streamlining which kitchens so benefit from.

INDUSTRIAL BULB

If you are a fan of simplicity and that industrial style beloved of trendy restaurant openings across the country, you’re probably already in love with the idea of ‘naked’ lighting that contains just a bulb. When done right, this doesn’t look like a room unfinished. Quite the opposite, in fact; it possesses a unique aesthetic that can bring a modern, stripped back urban cool to your kitchen.

Industrial-style bulb pendant lighting is a top trend in the interior design world that can be easily suited to many different kitchen arrangements and styles. Just ensure that it’s not the only lighting in the room, or some serious shade will be cast. Rather, use industrial bulb lighting as one part of a bigger whole.

IMPORTANT LIGHTING RULES

Choosing the right creative kitchen lighting ideas is essential, but that’s not the end of the process. You should also make sure that you provide yourself with proper lighting that won’t cause any problems in the future. Here are some lighting rules to keep in mind before the purchase.

  • Spread the light around the whole room. Having light concentrated in one spot can actually give you a headache, amongst other things. It’s also impractical –  your kitchen isn’t a stage! There is no need to place spotlights here.
  • Use more than one source of light. Relying on one lighting source is adequate if you have a tiny room to illuminate. But in a kitchen whose space has been maximised, especially an open one, you’re going to need several sources.
  • Prioritise quality. Cheap lighting doesn’t last long and can be harmful to your eyes in its harshness. When picking the right lighting, you should focus on something called CRI – the Colour Rendering Index. It tells you how different colours can appear under the light source. It’s generally considered best by industry insiders to go for lighting with a CRI rating starting from 80.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Kitchen lighting is a crucial component of the room’s aesthetic and can make all the difference between the heart of your home beating enthusiastically or undergoing cardiac arrest. Make sure it’s the former, by following our handy tips.

5 WORK-FROM-HOME JOBS IDEAL FOR 2020

We are living in challenging times, and there’s no question about that. Some might even call them unprecedented, at a push. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, businesses all over the world have been urged to shut down their offices and allow employees to work remotely in what TIME magazine calls “the world’s largest work-from-home experiment”.

That said, many now find themselves #fh without the #w, and as such, are seeking employment which needs only a computer, willpower and a little knowhow on the current ins and outs of online work.

In the past, opportunities to actually make a profit while working from home were scarce, but now, in the era of technology and connectivity, a vast number of jobs can be done from the comfort of your own home. If you want to want to make a career remotely and safely during this tough, uncertain time, then read on; here are 5 work-from-home jobs IDEAL for 2020.

VIRTUAL ASSISTANT

In recent weeks, many businesses have moved the majority of their operations into the online sphere. As a result, small companies have been motivated to hire virtual assistants to help them stay organised and not fall behind on administrative tasks. A virtual assistant is not much different from a traditional office assistant, except for the fact that they do most of their job remotely, from a distance.

Tasks virtual assistants may have to complete include managing social media accounts, responding to emails, creating, organizing and sharing business-related documents and scheduling meetings or trips. They are simply not stationed in the same building as their company or manager. There is a multitude of platforms offering such roles, the most popular of which is perhaps Virtalent, where you can apply to work as a virtual assistant and find clients.

TRANSLATOR

If you are fluent in one or more foreign languages, then why not put those admirable skills to work in a translation and interpreting? Most translators are familiar with working remotely, needing only internet access, a computer, and that aforementioned handle on another language to complete their job.

The vast majority of translators all over the world work as freelancers, which means you might be looking at a lifelong career from the comfort of your own home if you know your infinitives from your gerunds and don’t get tongue tied when translating. What’s more, you can work on the go, able to travel the world as a ‘digital nomad’, if that’s your thing.

Some employers will ask for a bachelor’s degree, but the most important skills a translator needs to have is fluency in a foreign language and the ability to work to a deadline. The rest can usually be worked around.

WEB DEVELOPER

Websites are relatively easy to create now, especially with all the online learning tools available. That said, building a website which looks professional and runs smoothly is another story. The difference between functioning and fantastic here is huge.

You don’t need a degree to start working as a web developer, but you do need to have the practical skills required and some programming knowledge. You can look for an intensive course to help you improve your skills and become a fully-qualified web developer in just a few months. Should you have been furloughed or made unemployed, this is a great option to fill the time before you’re ready to work again.

FREELANCE WRITER

If you are creative and think yourself a bit of a wordsmith, then have you considered applying for a freelance writing job online to fill the hours and coffers in the months ahead? Though most big websites have in-house writers, many still hire extra help on a commission basis, plus there are plenty of newcomer websites that outsource their content and need freelance writers. You can even build a solid portfolio in just a few days, by creating a few articles on different subjects, to wow your potential suitors.

To be an online content writer, you need to have the following: internet access for your desktop or laptop computer, word-processing software, a decent grasp of grammar, and clients. As a tip, be sure you have a clear idea of how much you should charge clients for content writing. Be prepared to negotiate, depending on how marketable your services are.

ONLINE TUTORING

Schools out forever. With Alice Cooper’s prophetic words ringing in our ears, some teachers will be turning their skills to online tutoring to earn some extra cash during the months ahead. There are many Online Tutoring Platforms out there which you can sign up to, with Tutorhub, e4s and Tutorful three of the most popular in the UK.

You’ll need the requisite qualifications and a detailed knowledge of the subject in question, be it Maths, English or something more esoteric, but once you’re signed up, it’s as easy as firing up your webcam and educating. Since children will now be at home for the foreseeable future, expect demand to soar, and teaching is an incredibly rewarding job to fill those hours with.

Alternatively, you could find a job teaching English online, remotely, and to students based all around the world. Generally, you’ll need a Bachelor’s Degree and a teaching English qualification such as a CELTA or TESOL to earn a higher salary (£20 or more an hour). It’s worth shopping around as there are a plethora of platforms, but Teach Away and VIPKID are recognised as reputable.

Now, you’ve heart set on working from home, here are 5 IDEAL home-office hacks to boost your productivity.
